A series of performance studies were conducted using countercurrent column flotation to recover a marketable clean coal product from existing preparation plant fine waste streams. The test work was conducted at several preparation plant sites in Kentucky and Virginia using a 150-mm (6-in.) inside diameter column that was 5.8 m (19 ft) high. Both thickener feed and classifying cyclone overflow with a typical size distribution of 150 µm (100 mesh) X 0 were tested. The percent solids of the column flotation feed varied from 1.5% to 15% while the ash content ranged from about 30% to 60%. The concentrates produced contained 2% to 10% ash with Btu recoveries of nearly 90% using 0.12 to 1.25 kg/t (0.25 to 2.5 lbs per st) fuel oil and 0.12 kg/t (0.25 lbs per st) MIBC. These results were consistent with or better than results obtained in preliminary laboratory scale column flotation evaluation. Test results from seven different seams are discussed as well as scale-up relationships used to design a full-scale installation presently in operation.

The Little Rocky Mountains host epithermal gold-silver bearing vein and stockwork deposits in a syenite intrusive complex. Pegasus Gold Ltd. is currently mining the oxidized deposits by open-pit methods and recovering gold and silver by heap-leach processes. A geologic program has been designed to effectively determine the basic ore characteristics; 1)mineralization; 2)oxidation; 3)structural setting; 4)lithology; 5)alteration; and ultimately, 6)the leachability of the ore. Geologic mapping, sampling, drilling, assaying, and testing are routinely used in exploration, development, production control, mine planning, and ore reserve estimations. Timely and accurate assay results are essential for the program's success.

Coconut shells are the most widely used raw material for the production of activated carbon used in the gold production by cynanide leaching. There have been efforts to find alternatives to coconut shells. Shells and stones of certain fruits, have been tested. Although promising results to some extent were obtained, coconut shells remain the main source of activated carbon. Türkiye has become a country of interest in terms of gold deposits of epithermal origin. Four deposits have already been discovered and, mining and milling operations are expected to start in the near future. Explorations are underway in many other areas of high expectations. Türkiye is also rich in fruits which can be a valuable source of raw material for activated carbon production. In this study, hazelnut shells, peach and apricot stones, abundantly available locally, have been tested to determine whether they are suitable for the gold metalurgy. Parameters of carbonization and activation have been optimized. Gold loading capacity and adsorption kinetics have been studied.

A review of the the more common evaluation tests made on coal and how the test results are applied in commercial practice. Parameters used to select coal blends for wet and preheated charges should also be of interest.

Soda ash is the common name for sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), an alkali compound that is the 11th largest inorganic chemical in terms of production of all domestic inorganic and organic chemicals, excluding petrochemical feedstocks. Despite that most people have never heard of soda ash, it is an important industrial compound used to manufacture glass, chemicals, soaps and detergents, pulp and paper, and many other familiar consumer products. Natural alkalis have been used by mankind for thousands of years; however, their industrial manufacture dates back to only the latter half of the 18th century. Natural deposits of sodium carbonate have been known as early as about 3500 BC, when the Egyptians used natural soda ash in making glass. They also mixed lime and soda ash to make sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) that was combined with silicate minerals found in the Sinai desert. This made a soluble silica, which when added to aluminum-rich silt from the Nile River, produced a silica- aluminate cement mortar with excellent bonding properties for construction. The Romans in the first century AD also used natural soda ash in glass manufacture but expanded its use medically for the treatment of colic pains and skin eruptions, and in the making of bread. Elsewhere, people used the ashes of wood to obtain their source of alkali. People learned over time that different types of wood yielded various ashes with different properties; therefore, various plants were burned specifically for their ashes. Ash from plants grown in salt-bearing soils (such as saltwort) and from kelp and other seaweeds, especially Spanish barilla, were so different from ashes obtained from other vegetation that it became known as soda ash (due to its sodium content) versus pot ash, a potassium-based alkali ash. About 13 t of barilla ashes produced 1 t of sodium carbonate and 14 kg of iodine as a byproduct. The difference between these two ashes was relatively obscure until Duhamel Dumonceau made the distinction clear in 1736. The word soda ash developed from common usage and is perhaps more well known today than its synonym sodium carbonate. One of the primary ores of soda ash is trona, a sodium carbonate-bearing mineral that's name is traced back to Arabic origin. Trona also is known internationally by other names such as urao (Venezuela), kaum (Nigeria), natron (from Greek nitron and Latin natrium), and szekso (Hungary). The beginning of the Industrial Revolution in Western Europe in the late 18th century soon put a strain on the availability of raw materials to meet consumer demands. One of these scarce materials was soda ash. Because of the Seven Years War with England and the Napoleonic wars with other parts of Europe, France could not obtain sufficient quantities of Spanish barilla or other supplies of vegetable alkali to meet the growing demand. Efforts were needed to synthesize soda ash. In 1775, the French Academy of Sciences offered a large prize of 2,400 livres to someone who could find an inexpensive method to make soda ash. In September 1791 at St. Denis, Nicolas Leblanc (1742- 1806), a French chemist, developed such a technique using salt, sulfuric acid, coal, and limestone. The French Revolution interfered with its development, and his patent and factory were confiscated with Leblanc receiving only token compensation. Napoleon returned his factory to him; however, Leblanc was not able to raise enough capital to reopen it, and he committed suicide in 1806. A small, but not particularly successful, Leblanc plant was established in England in 1814. It was not until 1823 when the process first became commercially successful in Liverpool, England. The process was introduced in Germany in 1843 and in Austria in 1851 (Harness and Coons, 1942). Soda ash production by the Leblanc process reached its peak of about 599 500 t in 1880, after which it began to decline as the Solvay process became more popular. The Leblanc process was used to a limited extent in Europe during World War I but had disappeared by World War II. The Solvay process, also known as the ammonia-soda process, was developed by Alfred and Ernest (1 838-1922) Solvay in 1861 based on a concept by Fresnel that had been known since 1811. For the next 50 years, the implementation of the idea evaded industrial chemists because no large-scale and economic means could be found to commercialize the concept. Although Ernest Solvay was unaware of the existance of an ammonia-soda concept, he solved the problems by utilizing carbonating towers. The Solvay process produced soda ash from salt, limestone, and coke, with ammonia as a catalyst. With a capital of 136,000 francs, the first plant was built by the Solvay brothers at Couillet, Belgium, in 1863 with production commencing in 1865. Synthetic soda ash production amounted to 1.5 tpd in 1866, but reached 10 tpd by 1872. They patented their use of carbonating towers in 1872 that had made ammonia-soda manufacturing a successful continuous process. Their second plant was built in 1872 at Dombasle, France. In 1874, the first Solvay plant in England was built at Northwich by Ludwig Mond, the namesake of Brunner Mond and Co. (formerly Imperial Chemical Industries), the company that currently operates the two English Solvay plants. In the United States, William B. Cogswell in February 1879 heard a presentation on the Solvay process and sailed to Europe to meet with the Solvay brothers to seek their support for using their process in New York. At first, the brothers were not interested; however, Mr. Cogswell was persistent and ultimately gained their support. The Solvay Rocess Co. was formed Sep. 2 1, 1881, and construction began immediately on the first Solvay plant at Geddes, near Syracuse, NY. The plant came onstream Jan. 10, 1884, and produced 11 180 t in its first year of operation. In 1910, rotary calciners were installed that increased capacity to 1 000 tpd. By 1930, plant capacity was up to 2 400 tpd. The facility remained in continuous operation for more than 100 years. By 1939. 10 Solvay soda ash plants were in operation in 6 States throughout the nation. The Syracuse plant was officially closed Jan. 6, 1986, with total shutdown completed by Feb. 1986. Ironically, this facility was the first Solvay plant as well as the last. The consumption of grinding media forms a significant part of the operating cost of a mineral processing plant. An estimated half billion pounds of steel in the USA and over one billion pounds in the world are consumed each year in wet grinding alone. However, there is some conjecture as to the interacting roles of abrasion and corrosion. In order to provide a more complete picture of the conjoint action of abrasion and corrosion, marked ball tests were conducted on different grinding ball compositions in a laboratory ball mill and the metal losses were measured on varying the conditions, i.e., pH, PO2, in wet grinding a Cu-Ni gabbroic rock and compared with taconite grinding. Ball wear rates ere discussed with respect to ball composition and microstructure and the varying conditions used in the grinding tests.

The US Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu codeposited. Decreasing Cu codeposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.7 A h/150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 msecs. Graphite, lead and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave electrowinning at 70°C (158° F) gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10% to 30%, and a period of 100 msecs to 1000 msecs gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 µg/mL to 0.1 µg/mL. Au concentrations decreased from 54 µg/mL to 0.2 µg/mL and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µg/mL.

Mini-projects studying the flotation chemistry of paper de-inking were incorporated to an educational program at Michigan Technological University with support from the paper recycling industry. Interfacial activity of frothing agents, surfactants and polymers in de-inking flotation systems has been studied through flotation, atomic force microscopy, zeta potential, contact angle, surface tension, and froth stability measurements. These fundamental studies were developed to understand microscopic and molecular effects occurring in flotation of ink particles that may lead to improved designs in de-¬inking flotation processes. Fundamental studies indicate that ethoxylated alcohols are efficient frothing agents in flotation and can be used to clean the recovered paper from hydrophobic ink particles. Next, it was further supported in this research that the fatty acids activated by calcium ions act as collectors in flotation of ink particles. Finally, improvements in de-inking flotation are reported in laboratory tests involving aqueous solutions of polymeric flocculants.

Centrifugal modeling was used to evaluate reclamation schemes of; (a) flocculants, (b) sand/clay mixes, (c) flocculants/sand addition and (d) capping with sand or sand/clay mix. Results suggest the hierarchy of effectiveness is: (d) capping, (b) s/c mixes, (c) flocculants/sand addition and (a) flocculants. Comparisions between currently used large strain consolidation computer programs reveal no difference between piecewise linear or finite strain calculations. Correlations between numerical and centrifugal model predictions reveal excellent agreement on magnitudes; however, rate predictions require improvement in laboratory input data and centrifugal scaling relationships.

Southwest Salt Company is solution mining the Luke Salt Body of probable late Miocene age. The discovery hole, from which the first core was recovered, was drilled in 1968. The deposit was encountered at a depth of 880 feet, and the bit was still in salt at the bottom-hole depth of 4,500 feet. The solar ponds, developed on land formerly dedicated to agriculture, have an annual capacity of about 90,000 tons. Because land values are very high, mining rates and procedures are governed by the need for near-saturated brine to minimize land requirements. Because of the frequency of dust storms, the salt operation uses a unique wet-harvesting method. Most inventory is kept in the ponds under brine and harvested only a few days before shipment. Studies of the nature of crystal growth and the distribution of windblown and brine impurities led to the development of procedures for processing salt of high chemical purity and low insolubles content. Chemical purity exceeds that of most salt produced in fuel-fired evaporators. Salt is shipped from Phoenix as tar east as west Texas and as far west as central California. Occasional shipments have been made to Hawaii and Alaska.

A jet slurry apparatus has been constructed to test corrosive/erosive wear properties of grinding ball metal. Plain high carbon steel heat treated to a hardness of about 60 RC was used. Slurries of quartz and chalcopyrite ore concentrate were used as the jetting media. Weight loss due to pure corrosion was determined by the linear polarization technique and weight loss due to pure erosion was determined by jetting while cathodically protecting the sample. By comparing the total weight loss with the sum of the weight losses from pure corrosion and pure errosion it was found that there was a synergistic effect between corrosion and erosive wear. Erosive wear rates are given as a function of pH and mineral type.

At the request of the U.S. Department of Labor, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the suitability of using tri-sets for protecting mine personnel in roof-fall prone areas. A steel-set arch provided by MSHA served as a basis for evaluating the performance of the tri- set. All tests and analyses were conducted according to the arch canopy test and design procedures developed by the Bureau. Theoretical resistance functions were established for the steel-set arch and tri-set and were representative of their experimental behavior. The resistance functions were used to determine the energy absorption capacity of the structures and to predict their dynamic response to impact loading. The dynamic tests demonstrated that the arch canopy design procedure is appropriate for tri -sets and yields conservative designs for both steel-set arches and tri-sets. As a result of this work, it is recommended that tri-sets may be considered for protection against roof falls, provided that the arch canopy design procedure is utilized for each application and that the principles underlying the design procedure are understood.

Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel, called Straight Creek Tunnel during construction is located 60 miles west of Denver, Colorado at 11, 160 ft. elevation. It is 8, 510 feet long, and carries two lanes of 1-70 traffic under the Continental Divide. This paper describes improvements and changes made in construction methods for utilities, concrete lining, ceiling, wall covering and paving to allow maximum offsite fabrication and activity overlap resulting in a one-year faster completion for traffic. The substantial changes proposed on a design-and-construct basis by the contractor and put into effect after State approval were: 1. Substitution of ductile iron and thick-wall P.V. C. pipes for clay pipes allowing placement and operation before hole-thru. 2. Outside pre-assembly of large rebar mats, using a novel tension-splice with cable clamps. 3. Arch concrete placement method modified to make 4, 322 ft. of lining in 10 weeks possible. 4. Safety barriers precast and epoxy coated offsite instead of cast-in-place and tile faced. 5. Prestressed hollow ceiling slabs with porcelainenamel coated steel sheets assembled offsite, instead of in-place glazed tile and in-place cast concrete ceiling. 6. Glazed tile wall panels 8 ft. long by 11 ft. high assembled off site and erected using vacuum pad mounted on special lift. 7. Asphalt paving while other work proceeded, instead of reinforced concrete slab and asphalt overlay. Work started in January 1968, but advance came to a one-year standstill for major structural redesign and negotiations of a new agreement during 1970. Using multiple drift construction followed by top-heading and bench excavation, it then progressed to hole-thru in July 1972. As a result of art 18-month overlap of activities the tunnel was opened for traffic only eight months later in March 1973. Gibbons and Reed Company of Salt Lake City, Utah sponsored the joint Venture of Al Johnson-Gibbons and Reed-Western Paving-Kemper during 1971, 1972, and 1973. The tunnel was the subject of a previous paper delivered at the RETC '72 in Chicago by R. C. Hopper, T. A. Lang, and A. A. Mathews, describing geology, unusually severe structural loading and multiple-drift tunnel excavation.

The announcement of a minable reserve of 13.6 Mt (16 million tons) averaging 0.9 g/t (0.027 oz per ton) Au and 2.4 g/t (0.71 oz per ton) Ag for the open pit-heap leach reserve at Red Mountain No. 3 in Ouray County, Colorado, by Cornucopia Resources in November 1985 brings another open pit-heap leach precious metal ore body to the production stage. With about 8.2 Mt (9 million tons) of waste and metallurgical studies showing acceptable recovery rates, low reagent consumption, and good final percentage recovery, Red Mountain is a discovery that will add to the precious metal inventory of the US. Frank Baumgaruler of Denver, CO, recognized the precious metal potential in Red Mountain No. 3 and acquired all of the old claims. James Matlock conducted a field reconnaissance over Red Mountain No. 3 independently of the Baumgartner activities and recognized epithermal alteration and mineralization in the Tertiary volcanics. He recommended acquisition of the ground and was able to obtain rights and drill six core holes for Amoco in 1982. Amoco drilled a further nine core holes in 1983, but then dropped the property. Cyrano Resources examined the data and through its consulting geologist, V.F. Hollister, acquired the rights dropped by Amoco. In 1984 Cyrano began further drilling of the ore zone demonstrated by Amoco but they were then acquired by Cornucopia Resources. Cornucopia completed development of the property and commenced the permitting process in 1986. The property was recognized as a disseminated gold deposit by both Baumgartner and Matlock, and both deserve credit for properly evaluating mineralized outcrop in the Tertiary volcanics. However, Cornucopia recognized the profit potential in the heap leach exploitation of the ores and de- serves credit for completion of premine feasibility studies. The discovery is clearly a geological one, but the premine engineering studies were essential to the conversion of the prospect to a commercial mining enterprise. The deposit lies on the circular bounding fault of the Silverton caldera. Two reprints follow that help understand the geologic setting of the ore controls.

Three case studies were undertaken to investigate the role of land use potential evaluation in reclamation planning and to determine the impact of regional differences on final land use plans. The three surface mines studied were representative of operations in the Appalachian, Interior, and Northern Great Plains provinces. The scope of the investigations included a survey of regional characteristics, a detailed investigation of the mining operations and site conditions, and an assessment of local land use planning activities in the area of the mines. Special attention was given to key factors that presently determine the use of reclaimed land. Also, for each case study, the postmining land use potential was evaluated using site planning principles. Specifically, the environmental, economic, and social impacts of several potential postmining land use plans were considered.

"As mine operators continuously look for ways to improve functionality and increase capacity of their facilities, existing process equipment is often pushed to and past its designed limitations. As a result, equipment manufacturers are asked for economical solutions to meet redefined processing needs. Newmont USA (Newmont) in Nevada was faced with such a need in their Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) train. In a collaborative effort between Newmont and Derrick Corporation, tests were conceived to assess the viability of drop in replacement screen using a three dimensional screen panel. The urethane pyramid screen panel was designed to increase flux while maintaining the existing equipment footprint. The test is the end result of an ongoing research and development project that Derrick undertook in an effort to refine and upgrade their urethane screening media. The application of this new screening media is presented for this CIL application along with future plans to implement the technology in trash, safety, carbon dewatering, carbon sizing, and other scalping applications.INTRODUCTION In Spring of 2014, Process Machinery Associates (PMA), Derrick Corporation’s (Derrick) local area representative, met with Newmont USA (Newmont) to discuss the operation of the in tank screens in the carbon in leach (CIL) train at Twin Creeks, near Golconda, Nevada. The process was originally designed for 13,000 +tons per day (tpd) but has been steadily rising since the plant was commissioned and now Newmont requires 16,000 tpd to be processed. The original screens were running at their maximum capacity and Newmont required additional screening capacity to continue the upward trend in production. Physical separation by use of screening is one of mineral processing oldest methods. Screening media can be prone to blinding and pegging and the necessary support structures required for finer apertures result in smaller open areas. Therefore, more screening area generally requires larger panels and therefore larger machines, screening media that doesn’t blind, or a combination of both. In an effort to avoid larger machines, Derrick Corporation had been working on a revolutionary three dimensional panel which would add non blinding screen area in the same footprint of an existing machine. Alpha testing of the new screen panels began at Newmont Mill 2/5 (Carlin, Nevada) in July of 2013 and was still occurring when PMA approached Twin Creeks about beta testing a refined machine and pyramid panel. After presenting the initial results, Twin Creeks determined that an upgraded machine and pyramid panels would be a possible solution to meet production needs. The testing of a machine eliminated the risk of capital costs to Newmont and provided Derrick the opportunity to obtain additional data."
