Sand bed filters are used to remove large and small particles from liquid streams. The large particles are removed by the straining action of the filter bed and the small particles are removed by particle deposition on the surface of the bed particles. Particle deposition, while being essential for the filtering action of colloidal particles, is not the only process that occurs in the filter bed. Other processes that occur are (1) the substrate becomes filled with particles limiting further deposition, and (2) some deposited particles are resuspended. The sum total of all these processes determine the performance of a filter bed.

This paper discusses briefly the evaluation of chrysotile asbestos deposits in ultramafic rocks. Such deposits are limited to serpentinized peridotite and/or dunites. The purpose of any evaluation is to determine whether a deposit contains sufficient ore mineral to justify profitable exploitation. Dimensions of a mineral zone are established by conventional methods, such as mapping, ground magnetic surveys, diamond drilling or underground exploration. The value of the contained asbestos fibre Is dependent on numerous physical properties such as fibre length, strength, flexibility, as well as the actual amount of fibre present. The determination of grade is difficult. The Quebec Standard Test (Q.S.T.) is used to grade fibre according to the proportionate lengths of fibre present. A method of visual vein counting allows calculation of an approximate percent fibre together with a simulated Q.S.T. Various drilling methods are discussed, diamond drilling is favored. Bulk sampling is required to determine fibre quality. Correlation of visual techniques and laboratory methods are often difficult. Reasons for any variance are discussed. Underground bulk sampling of most potential ore zones is strongly recommended to confirm the viability of the property. Evaluation of slip fibre deposits requires greater reliance on laboratory testing as visual methods are difficult to apply. Cross fibre has greater inherent strength.

Laboratory settling and filtration testing was conducted on wet processed fly ash in order to determine the applicability of conventional dewatering techniques to reduce the moisture content prior to drying. Settling tests showed that acceptable clarity (<1.5 g/l suspended solids) could be achieved after as little as 6 minutes of settling. After settling to a consistency of 40 weight % solids, continuous laboratory vacuum filtration testing produced a cake containing below 20% moisture with throughput exceeding 150 lb/ft2/hr.

A detailed assessment of acid rock drainage (ARD) potential was conducted at the Quintette Coal Mine site in northeastern British Columbia The site is unusual in that the coal seams contain low sulphur levels as compared to eastern coals (typically less than 0.5%), and the non-coal wastes generally do not to have the potential to generate acid on the basis of static ABA tests. The presence of small iron-stained seeps on the pit walls indicate localized sulphide oxidation, while the overall mine site drainage has remained of excellent quality with extremely low levels of metals after approximately 15 years of mining. Thus the site provides an excellent comparison to more problematic coal mine sites. For the Quintette assessment, static acid-base accounting (ABA) analyses of individual samples were compared to criteria for potentially acid generating materials developed for the U.S. Appalachian coal, as well as criteria developed in British Columbia for hard rock mines. Geologic units were characterized by the percentage of samples, or weighted thickness, that was deemed potentially acid generating (PAG). Links were then made to actual seepage and water quality emanating from geologic units around the site. Seeps at the site demonstrate a large range in pH (2.32 to 8.18). The few acidic seeps (pH < 4.0) were found to contain elevated levels of sulphates, dissolved iron, manganese and aluminum, consistent with the metals typically of concern in Appalachian coal mines. Other heavy metals that were detected in acidic seeps at Quintette included copper, zinc, nickel and cadmium. The use of simple ABA tests, and comparison of individual sample results with the Appalachian and British Columbia criteria, was found to be useful in predicting the probable sources of the small localized acidic seeps.

Electronic detonator systems are an advance in technology beyond conventional electric detonators for initiating explosives and blasting agents. Their use is widening into the mining operations of the U.S.A. Each electronic detonator system differs in design, construction, operation, and testing features and each system is different than “conventional” electric detonators. There are benefits of electronic detonator systems which serve to improve blasting safety. With the introduction of electronic detonator systems for mine blasting, issues were raised about the application of MSHA regulations for shunting and circuit testing. The MSHA regulations for surface and underground mine blasting operations address the use of “electric” detonators. Although electronic detonators are initiated by an electric pulse or current, their design is unlike “electric” detonators. To resolve the issues of shunting and circuit testing with respect to MSHA regulations, a technical and field evaluation of electronic detonators was made and the results are presented.

The conventional troughed belt conveyor system is the most widely used form of equipment for transporting bulk materials in the world today. The reason is not only because it is possible to transport a great deal over a long distance when compare to other types of equipment but also due to its greater economic efficiency and low initial and running costs. When dry, powdery materials and liquid materials are being conveyed, there are enclosed transport methods such as flow, case, air-slider and pipe line. In addition to features of the belt conveyor, a system employing a pipe line to transport dry powdery and liquid materials has always been considered an ideal method. This has been brought into reality through the Pipe Conveyor Sys tem.

Once an ore body has been probed and outlined, and sufficient information has been collected to warrant further analysis, the important process of selecting the most appropriate method or methods for mining can begin. At this stage, the selection is preliminary only, serving as the basis for a project layout and feasibility study. Later, it may be found necessary to revise the details, but the basic principles for the ore extraction should remain a part of the final layout. With respect to the basic principles employed, relatively few mining methods are used today. For the purposes of this presentation, the principles are classified as follows: 1) For naturally supported stopes, the available methods are room-and-pillar mining and sublevel stoping. 2) For artificially supported stopes, the available methods are shrinkage stoping, cut-and-fill mining, square-set mining, and longwall mining. 3) For caving methods, the available techniques are sublevel caving and block caving. Due to the uniqueness of each ore deposit, the variations on each of these methods are nearly limitless. It is impossible to include even the major variations in this chapter; the goal of this chapter is to present the principles as a guide to the mining engineer in adapting the general methods to specific needs. The selection process described herein is intended to supply the techniques by which the candidate methods available for a given ore body can be reduced to one or two feasible approaches. The feasible approaches then can be evaluated in detail, and the particular modifications can be investigated. In describing costs and economic factors, all values herein are expressed in terms of 1978 US dollars.

Catalyzed diesel particulate filters (CDPFs) are used for reducing diesel particulate matter (DPM) concentrations in underground mines. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on how catalyzed diesel particulate filters perform. Two CDPFs, with two different catalysts, are used on vehicles in two mines. The CDPFs are periodically removed from service and evaluated in the laboratory to determine their DPM collection efficiency, regeneration temperature, and effects on gaseous hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. This report summarizes the results of the laboratory evaluation, and the mines&apos; experience with the CDPFs. Both CDPFs have operated over 2,000 h. One was evaluated after 1,646 h; its collection efficiency at one operating condition was 87.3 pct. After 2,135 h of operation it was removed from service because it was damaged. The second CDPF continues to be used after 2,328 h of service. The laboratory evaluation indicated its collection efficiency decreased after 1,584 h of use and its regeneration temperature increased from 405&apos; C to 420&apos; C. The mines&apos; experiences with the two CDPFs varied. While being used on mine vehicles, both CDPFs became plugged with DPM on a number of occasions because of insufficient regeneration. CDPFs are capable of lowering DPM concentrations in diesel exhaust. They can also lower emissions of CO and HC, depending on the type of catalyst used. In this study, the performance of the CDPFs changed with use. Recommendations are given in this report for proper use of CDPFs in mines.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Henderson mine utilizes a highly mechanized, continuous panel-caving system to extract ore from a deep, massive, molybdenum deposit. The mine site, lo¬cated 80.5 km (50 miles) west of Denver, is situated at 3170 m (10,400 ft) above sea level in a steep valley on the eastern side of the Continental Divide. The mill site, located on the western side of the divide, is linked to the mine via a 15.5-km (9.6-mile) railroad tunnel. Mine production is scheduled to reach 27 215 t/ d (30,000 stpd) from the uppermost production level. This pro¬duction rate will have been reached within the four years following an intensive ten-year preproduction development program. A second production level, due to come on stream in later years, will expand production capabilities to 31 751 t/d (35,000 stpd). The mine, which employs approximately 2000, has blocked-out ore reserves of 220 Mt (242 million st) at an average grade of 0.42% MoS2. Geology The Henderson deposit is composed of two partially overlapping ore bodies that lie 1080 m (3600 ft) beneath the peak of Red Mountain. The ore bodies are entirely within a Tertiary rhyolite porphyry intrusive complex that has intruded Precambrian granite. The de¬posit is elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 670 x 910 m (2200 x 3000 ft). In section it is arcuate with an average thickness of 185 m (600 ft). The top of the deposit is at an elevation of 2610 m (8700 ft) while the lower limits range from 2340 m (7800 ft) on the west to below 2100 m (7000 ft) on the east. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore bodies and consists of molybdenite and quartz in random to subrandom, intersecting, closely spaced veinlets. Cavability RQD (rock quality designation) * values measured from Henderson drill core and compared with the RQD values from the Climax and Urad block-cave mines in¬dicated that the Henderson ore would cave but with difficulty and that a high percentage of the cave ma¬terial would be blocky. Initial caving experience shows the Henderson ore caves easier and with greater frag¬mentation than was indicated by the RQD values. Pos¬sible reasons for this are: 1) The greater lithostatic load at the Henderson has a greater effect on caving and fragmentation than anticipated. 2) The relief of confining pressure due to caving action and brittleness of the rock is enhancing breakage. Mine Layout The Henderson mine layout was designed from its inception for a large-scale, rubber-tired, continuous panel-caving mining system. The ore body is vertically divided into three major mine levels (Fig. 1). The top¬most level (8100 level), which is 2469 m (8100 ft) above sea level, is the current mine production level. Kelsey Lake kimberlites are a cluster of eight diamondiferous pipes that occur in the northern State Line kimber lite district of the Colorado-Wyo¬ming diamond province (Coopersmith 1991, 1993) (Fig. 1). This is located at the southern margin of the Wyoming Archean province. Two relatively large pipes and a few smaller bodies define the cluster (Fig. 2). The Kelsey Lake kimberlite cluster has been developed as the first diamond mine in the United States. The cluster was discovered in 1987. Full-scale production began in the spring of 1996. Mining has produced gem-quality diamonds up to 28.3 carats in size. The 30 State Line kimberlites, intruded about 390 million years ago into Proterozoic crystalline rocks, were presumed to be underlain by Archean basement of the Wyoming Province. Nearly all the kimberlite pipes contain diamond but only the Kelsey Lake pipes are economic. The Kelsey Lake kimberlites contain predominately diatreme facies kimberlite, with minor hypabyssal and crater facies rocks locally occurring. Alteration and weathering of the kimberlites is extensive. Petrologic studies indicated an underlying lithosphere that has a largely Proterozoic signature and shows evidence of deep melt and metasomatic events. Current development has concentrated on the two largest pipes. These have been bulk-sampled after geological study (1987) identified the presence of small diamonds and mineral chemistry indicating favorable diamond conditions. A 10-t/hr (11-stph) rotary pan plant was established in 1992 to process thousands of tons of bulk-sample material. Grades and gem-quality diamonds to 14.2 carats in size were recovered. Early in 1995, it was decided to move from evaluation to commercial mining. Production began in early 1996. A 195-t/hr (215-stph) rotary pan plant was built. A water supply system and tailings disposal have also been incorporated. The project straddles the Colorado/Wyoming border. Existing mining permits were amended to incorporate the increased scale and new plant facility. The permits for this project included the following: Colorado mining permit, Wyoming dozing permit, Corps of Engineers Section 404, Colorado NPDES, Wyoming NPDES, Storm water Management Plan, Air Pollution Emission Notice, various Colorado and Wyoming State Engineer and well permits, Substitute Water Sup¬ply Plan, Larimer County Special Use Review, and US Forest Service road use permits. The temporary destruction of a wetlands area was a sensitive issue. It has been addressed through the Clean Water Act Section 404 permit administered by the US Corps of Engineers. This use will be mitigated by creating new, self-sustaining wetlands in the immediate drainage system. A comprehensive and bonded reclamation plan is incorporated in the permits. Diamond mining and ore processing is environmentally benign. No chemicals are used in processing the diamonds. The plant is a water wash facility. The kimberlite ore is inert, as is the granite wall rock. The exposure of the ore body and the subsequent ore processing and waste rock and tailings containments pose no threat of release, leaching or dispersion of any detrimental elements. There is no acid-forming waste. Even a prolonged acid rain environment will not produce a harmful leachate. Slimes containment and clarification ponds will prevent unacceptable levels of suspended solids in water discharge. Technical Support, one of several major organizational units in the Mine Safety and Health Administration, provides technical assistance to the mining community in all areas of health and safety. One of its many areas of expertise is noise control. Depending upon the needs of the operator or inspector, the services provided can range from locating major noise sources to actually building noise controls. Over the years a vast amount of knowledge has been obtained as to what will work and what will not. DESIGN GOALS While many noise controls have been developed for mining equipment and operations, the most acceptable (ergo successful) have achieved the following design goals: - a noise level reduction of at least 5 decibels; - minimum interference with production; - inexpensive to install; and - effective in reducing low frequency noise.

Ground water, one of Florida&apos;s most valuable resources, is also one of its most abundant. The State is fortunate to have several prolific ground- water reservoirs that yield tremendous quantities of water to wells and to some of the world&apos;s largest springs. These ground-water reservoirs, or aquifers are of two types artesian and nonarteaian. Ad artesian aquifer is one that contains water under sufficient pressure to rise above the top of the oontaining formation. A nonartesian aquifer is one that contains water which is not confined, and the upper water surface (water table) is free to rise and fall. The principal source of ground water in Florida is the artesian Floridan aquifer which supplies most of the water users in the State. Nonartesian sources include the Biscayne aquifer of southeastern Florida, the sand-and-gravel aquifer of extreme western Florida, and a shallow aquifer which lies at depths of less than 100 feet over much of the State. The accompanying map shows the approximate areas where these aquifers are the main source of supply; however, the boundaries do not represent the areal extents of the aquifers. For example, the Floridan aquifer extends beyond the southern boundary shown on the map, but it is not of great economic significance there because the water is highly mineralized. Aquifers other than the four described occur in the State, but they are, for the most part, of minor significance. One of these is an artesian aquifer which is formed by permeable zones that occur locally within the confining beds above the Floridan aquifer.

INTRODUCTION The City of Oslo together with the neighbor municipalities, Baerum and Asker, are presently building a jointly owned sewage treatment plant located on the west side of the inner Oslofjord. The project is scheduled for completion late 1981. Because the location of the treatment plant is at a distance of about 20 miles (30 km) from the city center, a discharge of more than 13 yds 3/sec (10 m3/sec.) of sewage and storm water will have to be transported over considerable distances. The topography of the area and the geological conditions early indicated that the only realistic transport method had to be through tunnels. As planning proceeded, full face tunnel boring emerged more and more as a favorable alternative to conventional drill and blast medhods. Today the scheme comprises nearly 25 miles (40 km) of tunnels being excavated by full face tunnel borers. In addition a number of access tunnels and cross cuts are to be excavated by conventional methods.

6.1 PRINCIPLES OF PLANNING GROUTING OPERATIONS FOR SHAFTS, DRIFTS AND TUNNELS The planning of integrated grouting of vertical, inclined or horizontal underground workings in saturated, fractured rock includes the following phases: 1. Planning for the collection and analysis of geological information concerning the characteristics of the struc¬tural deformation(s) that produced the details of the frac¬ture system being studied. 2. Planning for the acquisition of initial hydrogeological information produced by the flowmetric and hydrody¬namic investigations (described in Chapters 2 and 3). 3. Computing the initial engineering calculations of the ex¬pected or planned dimensions of the isolation curtains for each water-producing stratum (fracture zone) and the expected areal spreading pattern of the grout in each of these water-producing horizons. The selection of the lo¬cations, the initial optimal number of holes and the vol¬ume of grout needed to create each isolation curtain also are included in this phase. 4. The selection or development of a grout formula for the specific hydrogeological conditions that exist at the site. 5. Identification of a resource (deposit) required to produce the grouting clay. The planning of grouting operations must be supported by the acquisition of all necessary initial data, which in¬cludes: 1. The geographic location and administrative responsibil¬ity (ownership and regulatory constraints) of the mineral deposit and any peculiar features of the area where ex¬cavation of the underground workings is planned. The surface relief, the hydrographic network of the region, and the local climatic conditions must be evaluated prior to planning for buildings and waste discharges if any. 2. The economic status of the region, the available trans¬portation, the nature of the energy base, the water and heat supply sources, the location of construction mate¬rials suitable for making the grout all must be deter¬mined. 3. The geological and hydrogeological characterization of the work site must be accomplished. 4. The technical features of the shaft(s) and underground works must be characterized. 5. The organization&apos;s principal initial design plan features and the construction sequence of all buildings and struc¬tures must be developed. These must be correlated with the organization and schedule for excavating the under¬ground works. The technical characterization of a shaft or of other un¬derground workings must contain information about the purpose of the workings, the design depth, the planned excavation procedures along with cross-sections, and the parameters of the lining, if a lining is required. The geology of the section to be penetrated must include geological data obtained from existing exploration activities at the mineral deposit and conclusions about the shaft ex¬cavation conditions obtained from drilling technical moni¬toring holes and exploration drillholes. The interpreted stratigraphic regime, including the thickness, strike and dip of each stratum, must be shown in cross-section. The tec¬tonics, including all geologic structures, must be presented by cross-sections. The bedding orientations must be used to identify anticlines, synclines, monoclines and faults. The lithologic composition and the drillability of the rock com¬prising the section must be examined. The character of the rock&apos;s fracture pattern must be presented. Finally the per¬meability, porosity and storage characteristics of each aqui¬fer must be determined by in situ hydraulic property testing (injection tests or pumping tests, as described in Chapter 3). The fracture pattern of the indurated rock is presented in reports derived from geo-exploration borehole studies and from studies of outcrops on the surface and in all nearby underground workings. The extent of each fracture zone is mapped in three dimensions. The distribution of fracture apertures, the nature of the fractures according to each litho¬logic stratum, and the relationship of bedding planes to each fracture system are all determined. Acoustic logs, downhole cameras, caliper logs, oriented core, and any other appro¬priate geophysical tools available are used to construct the data base for this purpose. The hydrogeological characterization of the geologic section to be penetrated by the workings is based on the analysis of hydrogeological data collected during the drill¬ing and testing of technical monitoring holes and from in¬formation on ground water inflow collected during the ex¬cavation of nearby underground workings, if such workings exist. The hydrogeologic characterization must contain the following information: 1. The identification of all aquifers, their thicknesses and their locations in the section, 2. The distribution of hydrostatic head in the ground water in three dimensions, 3. The coefficient of saturated hydraulic conductivity (per¬ meability) of each aquifer, 4. The porosity and storativity of each aquifer, and 5. The projected rate of water inflow into the shaft, drift or tunnel for each aquifer prior to grouting. This step is used to identify the zones to be grouted.

Concern about environmental pollution goes back many centuries, but until recently most efforts to control it have been perfunctory and spasmodic, aimed largely at coal smoke and other visible pollutants. Air pollution is to a large degree a byproduct of our economic development, and scientific knowledge of the causes and character of such pollution is more extensive than the technology to handle the waste byproducts of our industrial civilization. The removal of all constituents foreign to the air from the effluents produced by an industrialized society is obviously impractical at this time. There is widespread difference of opinion regarding acceptable ambient air concentration levels for the Various pollutants produced by combustion processes, but there is basic agreement that the pollution of the atmosphere must be controlled and eventually reduced. The magnitude of the air pollution problem has been increasing rapidly because our expanding economy calls for an ever-increasing consumption of energy, and fossil fuels are a principal source of energy. For example, the consumption of electricity has been increasing at an average annual rate of approximately 8 percent over the last 10 or 1.5 years. Table 1 shows the estimated emission of the principal pollutants into the atmosphere in 1966. The approximately 90 million automobiles, trucks, and buses on American highways contribute the largest proportion of pollutants to the atmosphere, but that fact does not alter the growing problems of the coal industry. You will note that sulfur oxides, particulates, and nitrogen oxides are all products of the combustion of coal. Of these air contaminants, sulfur oxides are now receiving major emphasis in terms of research to develop effective means for control, Table 2 shows that the combustion of coal produces approximately 60 percent of the sulfur oxides discharged to the atmosphere. While the utilization of coal is the principal source of particulate matter, this is not considered as serious a problem as it was in the early part of the century because of technological developments that have produced sound methods for the removal of particulates from waste gas streams.

INTRODUCTION Phase I of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project, known as MOS-1 (Minimum Operable Segment-1), is the first phase of the 27 km± (17 mi) subway starter line. MOS-1 is currently under construction and involves approximately 6.4 km (4.4 mi) of subway, five stations, yards and shops routed through the downtown area of Los Angeles. The project will form the initial heavy rail backbone of a more extensive light and heavy rail transit system planned for the greater Los Angeles area in the future. Construction Contract A-171 is one of 4 tunnel contracts within MOS-1 and involves construction of twin tunnels running from the downtown metropolitan area west to MacArthur Park. The heavily populated and developed downtown area, potentially gassy ground conditions, and the possibility of undocumented abandoned oil wells in seismically active southern California made the design and construction of Contract A-171 a uniquely interesting project. This paper summarizes the construction history to date (December, 1988) including design geotechnical considerations, tunnel support design, as-built geologic conditions, shield tunneling performance through soft ground, and ground response. An accurate knowledge of the interactions among mineral particles and between such particles and dissolved and precipitated species is important in developing efficient separation processes. In this investigation, interactions relevant to dispersion and selective reagent adsorption (the two main prerequisites for selective flocculation) within Florida phosphatic clay Waste were studied. Initial studies with artificial slimes, consisting of pure clay and phosphate minerals, showed dispersion of artificial slimes to be relatively easy. The problems that were encountered during selective flocculation of the artificial slimes were due to unselective polyacrylic acid adsorption on clay, which was caused by the presence of multivalent calcium ions on the exchangeable cation positions on the clay surfaces. This problem could be solved by exchanging calcium for sodium, which reduces the interaction between the polymer and the clay surface. This procedure, however, was not successful for mineral mixtures. Natural slimes were found to be much more difficult to disperse. This was attributed to the presence of cementing materials such as humic substances and Al and Fe (hydr)oxide precipitates. Selective removal of these cementing materials resulted in good dispersion and partial separation. A further increase in the separation of natural slimes is most likely determined by the presence of calcium on the clay surfaces, as was found for the artificial mixtures.

One of the main duties of the environmental manager is to seek ways to reduce these types of problems by eliminating contamination or by knowing what problems exist and designing corrective measures to prevent the situation from worsening.
