INTRODUCTION Mineral commodities are normally separated into three generic classes-metals, nonmetals, and energy minerals including oil and gas as well as the solid fuels. Metals, the focus of this chapter, encompass a large number of different substances. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, for in- stance, has commodity specialists following trends in over 40 metal products of importance to the country's economy and well being. Ranging from aluminum to zirconium, the metals display an incredible degree of diversity. Some such as lead are heavy, others such as magnesium are light. Some such as copper are good conductors of electricity. Others such as silicon are semiconductors. Mercury is found in liquid form, while some metals melt only when heated to extremely high temperatures. Iron and steel, aluminum, and copper are consumed in particularly large tonnages in a multitude of end uses, while many minor metals are needed in only small amounts in a few highly specialized applications. The use of some metals can be traced back into history for millennia, indeed back to the bronze and iron ages, while the commercial consumption of aluminum and other newer metals is less than a hundred years old. Some metals are extracted from large open pits, others are dug out of deep underground mines, and still others are processed from the sea. Mining and processing can be relatively uncomplicated and inexpensive, though in most instances highly sophisticated technology is necessary and the costs are high. Some metals are produced mainly as byproducts of other metals. Some are recovered in large quantities from the scrap of obsolete equipment and demolished buildings. Some are mined in only a few locations and traded worldwide, others are produced in many different countries. Some are sold by numerous firms at fluctuating prices determined on competitive commodity exchanges, others are produced by only a handful of firms and sold at stable producer-prices. This diversity makes the metals interesting, indeed fascinating, to study. Yet, it also poses problems, for each metal in its own way is unique. There is no general model or economic analysis applicable to all metals. Rather each must be considered individually, so that the analysis or model takes explicit account of its particular features. This means that a single chapter cannot begin to cover comprehensively the economics of all metals, and no attempt to do so is made here. Instead, we will concentrate on illustrating the usefulness of relatively simple economic principles, particularly those associated with supply and demand analysis, in understanding the behavior of metal markets. The next section begins by exploring the nature of metal demand. It is followed by an investigation of metal supply- from individual product production, from by- product and coproduct production, and from secondary production. The final section then illustrates the usefulness of the concepts introduced in earlier sections by using them to analyze

US mine operators frequently fail to investigate more cost effective and productive bulk material handling systems because surface mines seem to lend themselves to truck ore haulage. In this country, as a result, use of conveyors to move heavy loads from mine to process facilities has been minimized, if not actually neglected. In contrast, there are more than 50 conveyorized surface mines in successful operation around the world. These mine operators have learned that properly applied conveyorized systems can offer major savings in capital and operating costs, which contribute to improved profits when combined with other proven mining technologies. Growing acceptance and application of conveyorized bulk material handling in surface mines also points up how unique each mine is and how careful planning contributes to maximum mine effectiveness. Because of these differences, mining executives and technical and operating staffs need to develop an understanding of three factors in applying conveyorized bulk material handling in surface mines: • Why each mine will benefit from the type of automation permitted by conveyorized operation, •What kind of equipment is available, and • What applications most effectively demonstrate the first two factors in action - hauling either ore or waste. The conveyorized systems considered in this presentation have production rates from 0.5-2.7 kt/h (500-3,000 stph). Worldwide, these systems have been operating since the early 1960s. Advantages of Conveyors Why do you want conveyorized bulk material handling? First, it almost always provides lower operating and maintenance costs. Second, it frequently requires lower initial capital costs and almost always requires lower capital costs over the life of the surface mine. Third, it provides comparable operating availability, and finally, it frequently gives comparable operating flexibility - depending on the mine plan. Cost avoidance can be accomplished with modern production methods. These, in turn, permit increased productivity and reduced operating costs such as those for energy, maintenance, and manpower. It has been demonstrated in European surface mines and elsewhere, that conveyor systems frequently require lower initial costs than does truck haulage. Almost always such operations require lower capital costs over the mine life. Those costs include the continual addition of haulage trucks to both accommodate the increasingly difficult haulage routes and fulfill replacement requirements when trucks wear out. Conveyor systems handling ore in numerous large crushing and port facilities, which have operated since the early 1950s, have clearly demonstrated a useful conveyor life of more than 25 years. In contrast, off-highway trucks have life spans of six to eight years. The following examples illustrate comparative capital costs to purchase conveyor systems and comparable truck haulage units. Example 1 The ore haulage route from point A to point B is level and 610m (2,000 ft) long. The material weighs 1.8 t/m3 (110 lbs per cu ft) and must be transported at a rate of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph). The installed capital costs to provide a properly designed conveyor that will transport the described material from point A to B is about $450,000. The capital cost to purchase three 77-t (85-st) off-highway trucks and one spare truck - which would provide equivalent capacity - would be about $1.2 million. The truck cost estimate is based on a 6 min. or 771 kt/h (850 stph) truck cycle time. Truck efficiency is estimated at 0.8. Each 77-t (85-st) truck would have an actual haulage rate of 617 kt/h (680 stph). Therefore, three trucks would be necessary to transport the designated tonnage of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph). A movable crushing plant would be located at point A for the conveyors and a permanent crushing plant at point B for the truck haulage system. Capital costs for these primary crushing plants were not included in the calculations for either system because the capital costs are frequently comparable. Example 2 The transport route from point A to point B is 610 m (2,000 ft) horizontally and 122 m (400 ft) vertically - on a 20% grade (Fig. 1). The material weighs 1.8 t/m3 (110 lbs per cu ft) and must be moved at a rate of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph).

NIOSH is conducting research to reduce the silica dust exposure of workers at surface coal mines. One goal of this research is to evaluate the relationship between drilling parameters, rock strata and silica dust generation. This study involved measuring blast hole emission dust from a rotary drill rig which required sampling high concentration dust (>400 mg/m3) for silica content in a high velocity airstream. To measure dust initially, traditional sampling methods using personal sampling instruments were attempted in and around the shroud area of the drill with no success. Variations in the dust cloud concentrations under the shroud, the condition of the shroud and its orientation over the hole, and ambient air conditions prevented consistent and accurate dust measurements from being obtained. Amore consistent dust cloud is necessary for accurate measurements. An area of the drill’s dust collector system that consistently draws the emitted airborne dust from the hole is the collector tube. This tube connects the drill collector’s vacuum and dust filtration system to the shroud area. Assuming the collector system is working as designed, sampling from the collector tube would enable more consistent and accurate samples to be taken. However, current personal samplers are unable to sample in the concentrations and velocities experienced in the collector tube, so another method had to be devised. To achieve the desired results, an in-stack cascade cyclone was used. Preliminary field testing shows positive results.

Numerous articles have been written about the coal mine ; he has been compared with brave men who have gone out to conquer some unknown hazard throughout the ages. Now, however, modern mining is no longer something to be avoided, but a vocation that anyone can be proud of, with remuneration equal to or above that of almost any industry. A concerted effort is being made each day by both the operators of most mines as well as the state and federal inspectors to see that coal mines are as safe or safer than work places in any other industry. How- ever, it is true that mine fires and explosions have occurred in the mining industry since its inception. One of the earliest accurate references to such an occurrence is found in the transactions of the Royal Society of London. In the Colliery Managers' Handbook, 1898, Caleb Pamely writes of an explosion that occurred at Fatfield, England in August 1708, resulting in the deaths of 69 persons. He states: "Three of them, viz, two men and a woman, were blown quite up from the bottom of the shaft, fifty-seven fathoms deep, into the air, to a considerable distance from the mouth of the pit." It is interesting to note that women were employed as miners in England during that period. In the United States, the first record of coal mined was in 1702 by the Jamestown colonists. In 1786, about 20 years after Pittsburgh, PA was first settled, a charter was granted by William Penn to mine coal on the banks of the Monongahela River. Then in 1803, the first important coal company, the Lehigh Coal Co., was established. From this beginning, the mining industry continued to grow in importance and the first state mining law was formulated in 1870. The Pennsylvania state mining law was followed in 1873 by Ohio's, and in 1876 by Maryland's. A mine explosion at Avondale, PA in 1869 stimulated state legislatures to formulate these early laws. In 1907 near the town of Fairmont, WV, there were, within three days, two explosions resulting in a total of 597 deaths. Because of this, the federal government took action and by 1910, the US Bureau of Mines had been established. This was perhaps the most significant change in health and safety for miners during the first half of the 20th century as the USBM concentrated its entire efforts in the study, research, and testing of methods totally directed towards improvement of the health and safety of the miner. After a mine disaster in Illinois, a federal law was passed in 1940 calling for federal coal mine inspectors. Then in 1969, Congress enacted the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act following a mine explosion near Farmington, WV. In 1977, the law was revised and included noncoal mining operations.

COAL CHARACARISTICS AND PREPREPARATION REQUIREMENTS Preparation and Market Specifications The national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) established by the Environmental Protection Agency in 1977 require that when coal is burned, the environmental degradation should be a minimum. For this reason, even coal containing low ash and sulfur must be used in compliance with the NAAQS. The most important pollutants resulting from the combustion of coal are ash, SO2, and NOx gases, and the particulate matter escaping with the combustion gases. The ash is the residue left after complete combustion of coal. It results from the inorganic mineral matter existing in the coal before it is burned. The SO2 results from the combustion of inorganic and organic sulfur associated with the coal. The inorganic sulfur may occur as pyrite, marcasite, or as sulfate sulfur of mostly iron and calcium. The authorities disagree in the definition of organic sulfur in the coal. However, according to ASTM Standard D2492-77,1 the organic sulfur is that sulfur occurring in the coal after subtracting the sum of pyrite and sulfatic sulfurs from the total sulfur in the coal. The NOx gases are produced from high temperature oxidation of nitrogen in the coal that is released into the atmosphere. The particulate matter may consist of fly ash and unburned coal. Selective Mining The cleaning of coal from included ash and sulfur-bearing materials should start at the working faces of surface or underground mines. This can be done by (1) mining only those seams which meet certain quality standards, (2) not mining sections of the seams which may cause deterioration in overall quality of the mined coal, and (3) using a mining method that allows selective mining of coal areas or horizons either underground or on the surface. Since these steps improve the coal quality before the coal reaches the preparation plant, they can be considered to constitute precleaning of coal. During the exploration and development stage of a mine, core and channel samples taken from the coal seam are used to determine (1) petrographic analysis and physical properties,2 (2) character of roof and floor of the seam, 3,4 (3) character and quality of impurities,5 (4) proximate and ultimate analysis, and (5) washability characteristics. However, all of these parameters are subject to considerable variation even within the same seam during the advance of the coal face. This creates a problem in meeting the market demand for coal quality if the coal is to be shipped directly from the mine. If the mining operation is large enough, special blending silos or mechanical blending systems may have to be used to provide uniform quality to the market. To assess the value of various subsidence mitigation techniques, twelve linear foundations were constructed above a longwall mine. The structures were monitored during and after undermining, and footing curvatures at the time of cracking were compared with predicted values. An unreinforced concrete footing sustained substantial damage. Other footings received varying degrees of damage, with inclusion of a sand layer significantly affecting performance. A post-tensioned concrete foundation suffered minimal cracking. Also, a technique developed by the Bureau of Mines is presented for determining the subsidence, slope, curvature and strain of the ground surface.

This paper describes the formulation of mine ventilation network optimization as a standard nonlinear programming problem and the solution of the problem using the generalized reduced gradient (GRG) method. In general, the GRG method is regarded as one of the most effective and efficient methods for solving large-scale nonlinear programming problems. The variables considered in the network optimization include air quantity, regulator pressure loss, and fan pressure for each branch. Each of the variables is constrained by lower and upper bounds. This facilitates proper assignments of ventilation requirements and provides a great flexibility to include various situations encountered in mine ventilation. The objective of the network optimization is to minimize the overall air power consumed by or supplied to the network; whereas the constraints are, in addition to the variable bounds, the two fundamental network laws: Kirchhoffs voltage law and Kirchhoffs current law. A computer program has been developed based on the GRG method for the network optimization. An example of network with 18 branches, 8 regulators and 3 fans is included for illustration.

Innovative geotechnical construction techniques were used to construct three pedestrian tunnels under a building slab-on-grade to allow utilization of basement space for manufacturing. Tunnels were constructed using mining techniques through granular fill soils less than three feet below on-going sensitive manufacturing operations. Project design consisted of jet grout underpinning of exterior foundation walls and an arch of drilled-in grouted horizontal dowels for soil pre-support to limit ground movements during excavation. Permanent tunnel lining consisted of arched steel rib sets and invert struts supported on precast footings encased in cast-in-place concrete slab and side walls and a gunite arch.

The historic Getchell property, near Golconda, NV, is being mined from the Getchell Main Under- ground workings, a footwall extension of the Getchell open-pit deposits along the Getchell fault. Drift-and-fill techniques are used to extract the ore through a ramp access. The adjacent Turquoise Ridge deposit is under development by two vertical shafts. These two mines will continue to provide feed to the Getchell's 2.9 ktld (3,200 stpd) mill/autoclave circuit. This will take Getchell Gold from its current production rate of 6.2 t/a (200,000 oz/year) to more than 12.4 t/a (400,000 oz/year) by 1999.

The currently known and used plastics and rubber recycling or sorting processes cannot be applied efficiently and economically due to large amounts and different numbers of plastics types as well as of fine bulky materials (<4mm). These wastes are mostly given to land-fill sites. Thermal adhesion seems to be a great means to efficiently separate plastics mixes. Tests carried out at a special lab-scale testing unit (TaA1) confirm the effectiveness and feasibility of the separating mechanism. The thermal properties of the individual types of plastics differ from each other to a sufficient degree so that special products or product mixes of high material purity can be obtained according to the respective requirements. For this reason, plastics mixes such as PE and PP can be sorted with very good results. The separation efficiency is influenced only by different contact surfaces. The contact period can be adjusted to a short period of time so that sorting large amounts of fine dispersed plastics seems feasible. Sorting processes in feed streams were shown to be technologically effective when applying appropriate technologies. For the time being, the technological application of a thermal adhesion drum separator (TaTr1) is suitable. First tests on such a pilot-scale unit provided good separation results.

The Copper Canyon Cu-Au-Ag deposits include two geologically distinct hypogene ore bodies developed primarily in late Paleozoic rocks adjacent to a 38-m.y.-old potassic-altered granodiorite, whose emplacement seems to have been controlled largely by the Virgin fault, a north-striking normal fault. Widespread but subeconomic concentrations of sulfides as fracture and cavity fillings in skarn apparently preceded the final intrusion of the granodiorite. In the west ore body, metals reached ore-grade concentrations through the massive replacement of andradite by chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and pyrite mineral assemblages. The east ore body probably formed after the granodiorite reached its present level. Calculated 6dD values of water in equilibrium with primary and secondary biotites range from -76 to -99 per mil at temperatures indicated by d180 values from coexisting quartz and biotite. The lightest values are in secondary biotite from the east ore body. These data suggest that fluids associated with potassic alteration here were most likely composed of magmatic water mixed with some meteoric water.

Rehabilitation of sites contaminated by oil products and chlorinated organic compounds is a costly task which affects the planning of urban and infrastructure development. An integrated approach based on the non-invasive geophysical technology is utilized for subsurface characterization of contaminated land. In this approach the localized information, provided by chemical analysis of soil samples collected from bore-holes, is used for the calibration of the geophysical data. This information is subsequently extrapolated to the area under investigation by combining it with the geophysical results, providing thus information about pollution accumulation, contaminants? flow and pollution sources. Two case studies are presented from sites contaminated by heavy metals (Venice, Italy) and oil products (Athens, Greece). Resistivity, electromagnetic and seismic methods were used in this approach. Namely, electrical tomography, electromagnetic mapping, ground penetrating radar (GPR), multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) and seismic refraction experiments were conducted. In Italy, the sections from the multichannel analysis of surface waves imaged successfully a buried channel where the pollution is concentrated. Preliminary results are also discussed from the geophysical survey in Greece where the thickness of the oil phase located on top of the water layer is 60 cm.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) from both abandoned surface and underground mines is a serious problem. The flow of water and changes in quality over time from abandoned mines is important in determining remediation strategies. Acid mine drainage from surface mines is estimated to last for 10-20 years, while estimates of acid drainage from underground mines vary from 10- 100s of years. Fifteen underground mine discharges in West Virginia were studied to compare water quality changes between 1968 and 1999 to see if our data are consistent with other studies. Each of the discharges were categorized into one of three groups: undisturbed since 1968, affected by surface mining since 1968, and reclaimed. Comparing water quality between 1968 and 1999, the discharges in the undisturbed category showed a 35 to 95% improvement in acid concentration and a 40 to 99% reduction in iron concentration. The discharges affected by surface mining showed the most dramatic improvement. For acidity, iron, and aluminum, the percent improvements were all above 44%, and in most cases in the 70 to 99% range. In the reclaimed category, one of the four discharges declined in water quality. Discharge 82 showed a 76% increase in acidity, and iron and aluminum concentrations worsened by 58 and 96%. However, discharges 15 and 74 improved in water quality with a 94% acid load improvement and a 95% iron load improvement at both sites.

The Yakobi nickel-copper deposit is located essentially at tidewater in the east-central part of Yakobi Island, about 16 1 airline km (100 airline miles) west of Juneau, and can be reached by float plane and boat from Juneau and Sitka. The fishing village of Pelican, population 400, is situated 14.5 km (9 miles) to the east. An unimproved road, approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) long, connects a dock site at Lisianski Strait with the main part of the deposit known as the Basin Area (Fig. I). Other mineral occurrences are known as the Takanis, Flapjack, and Beach Areas. Another smaller nickel-copper deposit is located about 32 km (20 miles) to the south on Western Chichagof Island and is known as the Mirror Harbor nickel-copper deposit. The original discovery of the Yakobi deposit was made by S.H.P. Vevelstad about 1920 and a 47.5-m (156-ft) long adit was driven on the southwest side of the deposit in the Basin Area. The deposit was examined by J.R. Van Fleet of Union Carbide in 1930 and by J.G. Fairchild in September 1931. Stanley and Yates of the International Nickel Co. of Canada (Inco) visited the property in August or September 1937. In 1942, the controlling interest in the deposit, covered by 124 unpatented claims, was said to be held by Vevelstad and associates

TRANSPORTATION TUNNELING The use of tunnels for transportation, namely rapid rail transit systems and highways is on the increase. How much that increase might be through the 1980&apos;s is the question that is discussed in this paper. In 1975, there were 218 route miles of subway tunnels for rapid rail transit and 154 lane-miles of highway tunnel. From the viewpoint of many transportation planners and designers, the tunnel is one of the tools which may be used to by-pass many types of obstacles: a mountain, a body of water, or a Central Business District (CBD). Therefore, the transportation tunnel is a rural as well as an urban solution with major emphasis on the latter because of the current transportation needs of our cities. In the case of rural locations, tunnels are usually constructed through mountains in order to eliminate miles of steep grades and dangerous curves, such as the Eisenhower Tunnel which cuts through the Continental Divide in Colorado along 1-70 and saves 10 miles and 40 minutes of driving time. Tunnels also provide an excellent transportation link across bodies of water in order not to interfere with shipping lanes. The Chesapeake Bay Tunnel and Bay Tubes of the BART system are excellent examples of this type of tunnel.

NIOSH researchers and an industry partner conducted an investigation to study the effectiveness of ergonomic interventions in mining. The study required a significant commitment of time and resources from the cooperating site, Bridger Coal Company. This paper focuses on some of the challenges faced by the researchers and their cooperator. Challenges included the need to redesign methods of identifying and prioritizing injuries, and the need to train the workforce in ergonomics while still maintaining progress and interest in the process. The authors discuss some practical interventions implemented by Bridger Coal to date, and discuss future research implications brought about by PacifiCorp’s Generation Business Unit, who monitored the project to determine whether an employee-owned ergonomic process could be implemented throughout their operations.

Introduction Researchers have long speculated regarding the adsorption state of collectors on mineral surfaces. Only recently have analytical techniques become available that allow direct in situ analysis of adsorbed layers. With reactive internal reflection elements (IREs), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy coupled with internal reflection spectroscopy (FT-IR/IRS) allows for unobtrusive investigation of the adsorbed layer (Harrick, 1979). This technique has been used both for the in situ identification of adsorbed species and for the direct calculation of collector adsorption density in real time from infrared spectral data (Miller and Kellar. 1988). The reactive mineral IRE serves both to internally reflect the infrared light and to act as a substrate at which collector adsorption can be monitored. Shown in Fig. I is a schematic of light being internally reflected in an IRE. As the light is totally reflected at the interface, an evanescent wave propagates a short distance (typically a few microns) away from the IRE, and sampling of the interfacial region occurs. Because of multiple internal reflections, great sensitivity can be obtained. Flotation systems for which this method has been demonstrated include CaF2/oleate, Al2O3/dodecylsulfate, CaCO3/oleate, ZnS/xanthate and KCI/octylamine (Miller and Kellar, 1988; Kellar et al., 1989, 1990; Miller et al., 1990). Of particular interest to flotation chemists is the conformational behavior of the alkyl chain of adsorbed collector molecules. In the simplest sense, conformation can bethought of as the relative flexibility of the hydrocarbon chain caused by rotations about carbon-carbon single bonds. The flexibility is described by the amount of gauche/trans conformations in the alkyl chain. Figure 2 shows examples of gauche and trans conformations (rotational isomers or rotamers) in a hydrocarbon chain. These two conformations are observed when the terminal methylene groups in any four-carbon subchain are on the same side (gauche) or opposites sides (trans) of the plane of the middle carbon-carbon bond. A gauche conformer (rotamer) is thus a state of maximum potential energy, whereas a trans conformer is a state with minimum potential energy. The difference between these states has been found to be approximately 0.5 to 0.8 kcal/mole (Mead et al., 1986). The relative number of butane molecules present as gauche conformers with respect to trans conformers can be calculated from the Boltzmann equation (Mead et al., 1986). At 25° C approximately 66% of the butane molecules are trans rotamers. [ ] However at 100° C, only 33% of butane molecules are trans rotamers. Exposing the hydrocarbon chain to a polar, rather than an a polar, medium should also cause an increase in the number of gauche butylene groups in a hydrocarbon chain, although this effect has been difficult to observe experimentally (Mead et al., 1986). Forming a crystalline hydrocarbon is equivalent to decreasing the temperature, which greatly increases the amount of trans butylene groups present in the chain. From the preceding discussion, a picture of the solution species of concern can be developed. The collector monomer should exhibit the greatest number of gauche rotamers and most likely will look crumpled or balled-up to reduce the surface area in contact with water. The micellar form is expected to be aggregated, with the hydrocarbon chain existing in a less polar environment. Attempts were made to improve the recovery of coarse phosphate particles by adding selected frothers or precoated fine particles. A number of frothers for floating, specifically coarse coal and metallic minerals, were examined. Two of the frothers increased the flotation recovery of coarse phosphate by 3% on bench scale. Plant evaluation yielded improvements in overall phosphate recovery in the presence of these frothers. Addition of fine particles was also found to enhance coarse flotation under given conditions. Size, amount, and hydrophobicity of the fines added was determined to have a major influence on the coarse flotation efficiency. The grade of the product with and without frothers and particulate additives remained the same. Change in froth stability and viscosity are believed to be the primary reasons for enhanced recovery of coarse phosphate particles.
