"INTRODUCTION Molybdenite is typically produced as a co-product in the copper ore flotation process. At the Rio Tinto Kennecott Concentrator (RTKC) in Copperton, Utah, the molybdenite is initially floated with copper sulfides and other value minerals producing a Cu-Mo concentrate. This is then separated in the molybdenum plant by depressing copper sulfides and pyrite and floating only molybdenite. The molybdenum plant in RTKC comprises the rougher circuit and several stages of cleaning to achieve a certain grade requirement of Mo. The rougher circuit is where the first stage of separation occurs. Cu sulfides and pyrite are depressed in the rougher circuit by adding NaSH under nitrogen and in the cleaner circuit by adding NaSH under air. The depression of Cu sulfides (and pyrite) by NaSH is related to the redox activity1. It is important therefore to maintain a reducing potential in the circuit in order to achieve effective Cu-Mo separation. If the rougher circuit is under air, like RTKC’s molybdenum cleaner circuits, it is harder to maintain the target redox potential because NaSH oxidizes rapidly in the presence of air thereby increasing NaSH consumption significantly. CU-MO SEPARATION AND ROLE OF PULP POTENTIAL The collector adsorption on copper sulfide minerals is through an electrochemical mechanism2. The collector changes the surface chemistry of the Cu mineral allowing it to float. Molybdenite, or MoS2, on the other hand, floats readily in the presence of a frother as it is naturally hydrophobic. Usually, hydrocarbon oil extenders such as diesel or burner oil are added to enhance Mo recovery. In order to effectively separate Cu from Mo, the collector complex on the copper surface needs to be destabilized or desorbed using a reducing agent such as NaSH or Nokes. As long as the circuit is under highly reducing conditions, the collector remains detached from the sulfide mineral surface allowing Cu sulfide depression. Therefore, it is important to measure the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) continually and maintain the reducing condition with addition of NaSH. For a given collector each mineral will have a characteristic potential or electrochemical window for flotation to occur3, therefore, it is necessary to reduce the potential outside of this window in order to effectively separate Cu and Fe sulfides from MoS2 minerals2. In RTKC plant, the target reducing condition is between -450 to -550 mV to effectively destabilize the collector and depress Cu and Fe minerals. Typically the dosage of NaSH used in the molybdenum plant could range from 6 to 30 gallons/min (gpm). The high dosage of NaSH could pose risk of H2S exposure. RTKC wanted to evaluate alternatives to NaSH in order to reduce its consumption and minimize risk of H2S gas generation."

Combustion synthesis or self propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) reaction systems are discussed with respect to thermodynamics and kinetics. In particular, tile effect of the process parameters, ego particle size, AHf, ignition and combustion temperatures on these self sustaining reactions is discussed. Combustion theory is used to investigate the effect of the overall activation energy of the SHS reaction on the combustion front propagation rate and in obtaining a clearer understanding of the transition from stable to unstable propagation. Finally, examples of the application of combustion synthesis to advanced materials processes are made, in particular the synthesis of Ni-Ti -X intermetallic shape memory alloys, TiC-Al2O3 and ZrB2 ?Al2O3 ceramic composite materials.

A packed column jig has been developed for sharp separation of fine particles--150 down to 1 micron--having different densities. The packed jig is a column filled with corrugated packing. A slurry of mixed particles is fed into the middle of the column. Water enters near the bottom of the column as both a steady state and a pulsating flow. The pulsating water sets up a jigging action that interacts with the packing causing the dense particles to sink and exit the bottom of the jig and the lighter particles to rise and exit the top of the packed jig. The result is a sharp, environmentally friendly, gravity separation machine with low operating costs. Grades and recoveries of iron ore exceed that of known devices. Grades as high as 95 percent purity with concomitantly high recoveries are common for iron ore concentration. Low silica, sulfur and phosphate are common. This paper is the first to unveil the packed column jig technology in detail and presents its physical model with performance data. The purification of iron ores and coal is the paper's focus.

The Henderson Mill has operated over a wide range of production rates, feed grades, manpower levels and recovery targets since start-up in 1976. Henderson Mill personnel, both management and hourly, have successfully responded to these changes by not only maintaining unit costs, but by actually decreasing unit costs. Methods of cost reduction have included conventional austerity programs, innovative technological improvements and creative work schedules. This paper addresses both maintenance and operating cost reductions and efficiency improvements.

Predicting equipment failure behavior plays a critical role in providing a safe operation. Although various reliability evaluation methods are available for estimating failure behavior profiles, these approaches are based on mathematical formulation, leading to actual operation simplification and improper estimation of failure trends. This study proposes a discrete-event simulation (DES) approach to model fleet failure behavior. This approach can model the maintenance strategies in multi-component systems with minimum simplifications. In this regard, the first step was to collect a historical failure time dataset (e.g., the time between failures). Then, the DES model is established to predict the severity of failure events and design maintenance strategy considering actual operation circumstances. Afterward, the maintainability analysis was performed to estimate equipment downtime and availability. The achieved results showed that the system availability was about 85%. Also, the findings demonstrated that the DES could efficiently predict the equipment failure behavior using various stochastic events.

The production of portland cement requires that four basic elements -- calcium, silica, alumina and iron -- be ground to a fine powder, homogenized, and fed to the pyroprocessing unit, where it is burned to a cement clinker. The raw material must either be ground wet in a slurry form or dried and ground to a dry powder, with a fineness of approximately 85% passing the 200 M screen. According to the Portland Association's Plant Information Summary, approximately 38% of the U.S. capacity is ground wet and 62% ground dry. In this paper, the precise definitions for a number of commonly used subsidence parameters are given. The subsidence parameters have been determined using an integrated approach for 110 subsidence cases collected in the major US coal fields. Attempts have been made to establish empirical formulae for the parameters. The results of this study indicate that some traditionally-held concepts should be changed.

Thunder Basin Coal Company has two mines located in the southern portion of the Powder River Basin. 60-90 km southeast of Gillette, Wyoming. The mines are principally located on federal coal leases acquired in the late-1960's. Development plans for the Black Thunder Mine focused on dragline stripping, but environmental considerations during the mid-1970's made truck-shovel stripping the method of choice when the mine opened in 1976. In 1981, the Coal Creek Mine opened as the first dragline mine in the Gillette area of the Powder River Basin. The regional terrain is flat-lying with occasional clinker-capped hills. The mines are located on the Wasatch and Fort Union Formation contact. The coals are Paleocene in age and the deposits are structurally simple, dipping gently to the west. The seams are thick and are classified as sub-bituminous-C. The Black Thunder Mine, with its 21 m thick seam, is strategically located in the center of the highest heat value mining area of the southern Powder River Basin.

Biological leaching using native heterotrophic bacteria was studied by the U.S. Bureau of Mines as a means of extracting manganese from a domestic low-grade wad ore. Column heap leaching simulation techniques were employed using molasses as the nutrient source for the bacteria. These column studies were designed to investigate the effects of molasses medium flow rate, concentration, and replacement interval on the extent and rate of manganese extraction. .Results showed that flow rates between 0.41 and 8.1 L/min/m2 had little impact on manganese extraction. The total amount of molasses used did have a direct effect on the extent and rate of manganese extraction. Manganese extractions over 90-pct were obtained in 12 weeks of bioleaching with 2-week medium replacement cycles.

With complex component, higher salt content, low biodegradability, DSD acid oxidation wastewater could not be efficiently dealt with traditional methods. It is pointed that the coal water slurry could be made with DSD acid oxidation wastewater of different concentration and the density of coal water slurry could be up to 70%, while its viscosity is only 850~930 mPa?s. The coal water slurry could be perfectly jetted and burnt under different conditions. The higher density the DSD acid oxidation wastewater has, the better properties the coal water slurry have. The pollution components and characteristic group of DSD acid oxidation wastewater are similar to the additives of coal water slurry, so it could be used as a kind of usable additive of water coal slurry. It is so reasonable and feasible to make coal water slurry with DSD acid oxidation wastewater that the pollution of DSD acid oxidation wastewater can be solved completely.

Safety of mine ramps begins with an analysis of stress that almost certainly must be done numerically to take into account ramp geometry, route geology, rock properties, and pre-ramp stresses. The popular finite element method serves analysis purposes quite well. As a practical matter several obstacles to implementation need to be addressed including collection of rock and joint properties along the proposed ramp route, selection of ramp type, and specification of cross-section shape, size, and route grade. Additionally, stresses along the proposed route must be specified, preferably from in situ measurements. One need not be an expert in numerical methods to proceed to ramp design, although a background in mechanics of materials and rock mechanics is essential, and a first course in numerical methods is quite helpful. The necessary software is easily brought to the design task, more accurately, to the task of design evaluation. This software also addresses other important mine design problems including design of safe (1) main entries in stratified ground, (2) barrier pillars, (3) bleeder entries, (4) inter-panel barrier pillars, (5) room and pillar mines, (6) shafts, and (7) “tunnels” (Pariseau 2022).

This paper reviews the procedure used to quantify the conveyor frictional resistance on a 3.9 km (2.4 mile) long overland conveyor belt. Field torque measurements of the three drives were used to help fine tune a computer simulation of the conveyor. This enabled the prediction of the effect on various conveyor components that cold temperatures will have on increasing the throughput tonnage.

Arch Mineral Corporation and Rocky Mountain Energy's Medicine Bow Mine in Wyoming presented an interesting challenge to the concept of mining a multiple-seam, dipping coal in the Hanna Basin. The 3362 and 2962 pits at MBCC were designed in a multiple seam coal consisting of 4 (and in some areas 5) bands of coal; these coal beds are all in the Ferris formation. The area was subject to some localized faulting and a major fault caused a physical restraint that we mined up against in our final cut. Using a 1570 dragline as the principal stripping machine, the concept of developing a bench for stripping the lower seams from the low-wall side of the pit was initiated. The results of this method of stripping were very satisfying for this pit through the completion of pit life and prompted us to use it in other areas at MBCC and at our other operations. Mining a dipping coal presents a small twist to conventional "flat" coal stripping. The spoil has a tendency to continually try to slide into the pit and the increased overburden on each cut as you mine down the dip creates spoil problems unless adequate design provisions are made prior to stripping.

INTRODUCTION In the past, the cost and time required for the construction of shafts has played an important part in the planning of underground mines. For reasons that are discussed later, the economics and technology of shaft construction in the future can be expected to play an even greater role in the planning of new mines and the operation of existing mines. Indeed, the very feasibility of a proposed mining venture may depend on the cost and timing of the shaft requirements. The most commonly used shaft sinking methods used today for excavating vertical shafts are discussed and the need for new technology and methods emphasized. In one study by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, it was reported that the coal industry in the United States alone could require 170 to 190 new shafts per year on the basis of doubling current production by the mid 1980's or 70 to 90 shafts on a more moderate coal production expansion program. This study concluded that the attainment of the required number of shafts would be unlikely with the present shaft sinking resources and costs. In order to meet the requirements for shafts in the United States coal and metal mining industries, more efficient and speedier shaft construction methods will be necessary. Current shaft sinking methods are, in the main, labor intensive, and it is noteworthy that it is becoming increasingly difficult to attract the work force required to sink shafts conventionally. The economic importance of salt domes has been recognized throughout the world primarily because of oil and gas accumulations on their flanks and, to a lesser degree, for the value of their salt and potash. Recently they have become of value as hosts for cavities used to store hydrocarbons. In the near future we believe that their main value will be as a source of geothermal energy. Although tremendous effort has been expended on the understanding of the geology and physical characteristics of the strata intruded by salt domes, relatively little energy has been exerted in the comprehension of the salt dome itself. Salt domes have long been recognized as a geological heat anomaly. With respect to other sedimentary rocks, salt is a good conductor of heat. Expressing values in 10-3 cgs units, sedimentary rocks vary from 1.0 to 8.0; metamorphic rocks from 5.2 to 8.4 and igneous rocks from 3.1 to 9.8. Rock salt in its pure form has a thermal conductivity of 17. (Gussow, 1970). Thus a salt dome (Fig. Ml) can be expected to act as a conduit bringing heat vertically from deep within the Earth's crust. This was, in part, substantiated when in 1958 a horizontal core hole was drilled from within the Avery Island Mine at the 500 foot level. The horizontal hole was started where the ambient temperature of the salt was 74° F. and drilled toward the center of the dome. At the end of this 2,000 foot hole the temperature was 90° F. thus depicting a horizontal temperature gradient of 7° F./1,000 feet. Because this core hole penetrated a shear zone connate water that appeared as a "cold spot" on the temperature gradient, the foregoing data can only be regarded as indicative.

Although there has been an increased interest in the electrokinetic properties of coal (1) research on the subject is still in an early stage of development (2,3,4,5,6,7) To the author's knowledge, no electrokinetic studies have been made on coal lithotypes - particularly anthracite lithotypes. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the double layer properties displayed at the anthracite/water interface (whole coal and lithotypes) as determined by streaming potential methods, It is hoped that this investigation and related future investigations will provide correlations from which the surface properties of any coal can be predicted and then related to surface dependent processes such as froth flotation and flocculation. Another aspect of this research, undertaken to determine the physical and chemical parameters necessary for anthracite lithotype differentiation, was previously published (8). The number of parameters involved, lithologic, organic and inorganic, and the wide divergence of these parameters within an individual coal limits the practical utilization of the results, however, the results are of value and of interest in guiding theoretical developments. Keeping the limitations in mind, the results are analyzed in terms of their application to froth flotation processes and are used to indicate the feasibility of making a lithotype separation by flotation.

The Brunswick No. 12 Deposit is a large polymetallic massive sulphide deposit, occurring in Ordovician age rocks of the Tetagouche Group. Silver is contained within the sulphide zones and economically it is the second most important commodity produced. Brunswick is one of the largest silver producers in Canada. The distribution of silver within the mine is presented, with examples from various levels. The concentration of silver can be shown to be related to both stratigraphy and structure. The mineralogy of silver in mill products is also presented.

Since 1882, world zinc production has increased. In contrast, United States zinc production rose until about 1915, but since then has remained nearly constant, with a slight tendency to decrease. Production from the Tri-State district, the largest early source of zinc in the United States, has gone down steadily; this decline has been balanced by a growth in the rate of other districts. These changes in United States production are due to economic, not geological, factors. Recent exploration has located large mineable ore bodies; additional deposits will undoubtedly be found in the strata-bound carbonate rock and volcanogenic environments. A statistical analysis of the exploration effort in the Middle Tennessee district indicates that new discoveries can be expected there. Thus, the United States is in an early stage of the production cycle for zinc. Of major mining districts in the United States, only the Tri-State is exhausted under current economic conditions; large zinc resources of low-grade material, which would repay mining at higher prices or improved technology, are known to exist in that district.
