At the Sierrita mine, 40 km (25 miles) south of Tucson, Arizona, Duval Corporation is rapidly gaining operating experience with its new Portable Crushing and Conveying System, (PCCS). As of November 23, 1983, over 4.5 million tons (5.0 million st) of ore have passed through the system. Mining cost per ton for the months of July, August and September was 83% below the average for the first five months of 1983. Although all the cost reductions experienced cannot be attributed to the Portable Crusher, it was a major contributing factor. The Sierrita ore deposit has several natural topographic and geologic conditions which are not favorable to mining. It is not a sidehill deposit and therefore no low-level exit points exist to facilitate truck haulage. The ore is very hard. Quartz diorite, hardest of the three major rock types, averages 172-207 MPa (25-30 000 psi) unconfined compressive strength and may run as high as 345 MPa (50 000 psi). Blasting in this rock produces oversize material which runs approximately 20% 51 centimeters (20 inches). The ore is low grade, averaging slightly better than .30% contained copper and .035% contained molybdenum, with small amounts of silver. These conditions, plus high design production tonnages, make the Portable Crushing and Conveying System (PCCS) practical for Sierrita. Without crushing and conveying, truck haulage would be prohibitively expensive. A typical, October, 1983, ore haul from the bottom of the pit would involve a vertical lift of 260 meters (850 ft) and a horizontal distance of 3 860 meters (12 200 ft) were not in-pit crushing and conveying available. The corresponding cycle time would be nearly 32 minutes.

On-line analyzers have made possible the use of Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) for local control applications in coal preparation plants. This includes FLC control of complete circuits such as heavy media vessels, cyclones and froth flotation. These circuits can be controlled in real time in a feedback control loop with an on-line analyzer. Control strategies can be readily developed using Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques which are first applied off-line in manual mode through the use of control charts and then this process is brought on-line using FLC in conjunction with an on-line analyzer to fully automate the circuit. This paper outlines the types of control strategies employed and presents examples of automatic verses manual control.

Two recent antitrust cases, coming from widely separated areas, different industries and involving wholly different facts were decided by the Supreme Court on June 7, 1965. The decisions in these two cases may well prove to be the most important and far-reaching decisions in the field of labor law that have been handed down in the last 24 years. These cases, although quite dissimilar factually, had one common element. In both, the gravamen of the antitrust violation was bottomed on the terms of labor agreements negotiated by a multiemployer group. These cases are usually referred to as Pennington1 and Jewel Teat. Since a number.-of references will be made to the antitrust laws, it may be well to state briefly the applicable portions. Section I of the Sherman Antitrust Act makes "every contract, combination in the form of trust or otherwise, or conspiracy, in restraint of trade or commerce among the several states, or with foreign nations, is declared to be illegal...". Section 2 imposes criminal sanctions against "Every person who shall monopolize, or attempt to monopolize, or combine or conspire with any other person or persons, to monopolize any part of the trade or commerce among the several states...". Under Section 4 of the Clayton Act a person who sustains damages as a result of a violation of the antitrust laws is entitled to recover treble damages plus costs.

The mined coal bed and surrounding strata are both sources of methane which must be control led during mining. During developmental mining, the mined coalbed is the primary methane source; during retreat longwall mining, the primary methane source is the overlying strata. Underground technology is being developed to control both sources. This technology involves drilling long horizontal drainage holes into the mined coal bed and relatively short holes (less than 152 m or 500 feet) into the overlying strata. Because of the large volumes of methane that flow from such drainage holes and the limited ventilation available for in-mine dilution, underground pipelines are used to transport the drained gas to the surface. Large- scale in-mine degasification demonstrations showed reductions in methane flow of up to 70% during developmental mining.

I. CONCEPT MARTA's Peachtree Center Station is being mined out of hard rock, directly beneath Atlanta's central business district, with minimal surface disruption during construction. Its cost is competitive with that of a conventional cut-and-cover alternative owing to its design concept, which utilizes the rock as a primary structural and architectural material. II. PLANNING The station was originally planned for cut-and-cover construction. However, Peachtree Street is unusually narrow for a main business street (generally 78 feet (24 m) between building lines) and cut-and-cover construction would therefore be very disruptive to surface traffic and severely restrict access to adjacent buildings, including Peachtree Center, Atlanta's showcase business/commercial complex. In a previous report 1/the author showed that the essential information from particle size analyses of grinding mill products can be represented by three or four parameters derived from the first four moments of the particle size data. These parameters may be used in gamma or beta distribution functions to estimate the weight fraction in any given size range. Moment analysis was used to study the progressive changes that take place in particle size distribution when a homogeneous isotropic mineral such as quartz is reduced in size by impact crushing. 2/ This report briefly reviews the essential features of moment analysis and describes extension of this method to size reduction by ball mill grinding.

A series of iron-leaching experiments were conducted to test the ability of metal-reducing anaerobic organisms to reduce iron from Fe3+ to Fe2+ to dissolve it from iron ore tailings. This bioleaching process involves the fermentation of biomass from Typha latifolia (a common wetland plant) to generate organic compounds, which, along with metal-reducing organisms, reduce and dissolve iron. The concentration of dissolved iron over time was studied for one year. Iron concentration above 1150 mg/L was achieved at a pH range of 3.95–5.36. Tailings from multiple locations were examined.

Flocculation, the process of coagulation or coalescence of finely divided particles, is commonly used in separating fine solids from fluids. Forces disposing of the particles to flocculate include: ionic forces of attraction, secondary entropic forces, and magnetism. Magnetic flocculation is due to a physical magnetizing process which affects suspended ferromagnetic particles. Such particles, after exposure to magnetic fields strong enough to cause reorientation of the particles and alignment of the induced magnetic poles, tend strongly to retain this induced magnetism, as the magnetic retentivity of ferromagnetic particles is a linear function of its specific surface.1 Thus, because they become small magnets with high residual magnetism, the particles become and remain attracted to one another, forming large agglomerates. Fine magnetic particles close to domain size can exhibit energies of the magnetization of the order of 105 ergs/cm3,2 which is many times greater than the energy affected by chemical flocculents. Therefore magnetic flocculation can be used to agglomerate particles having surfaces ionized with like charges and only a minute quantity of ferromagnetic material will be necessary to develop sufficient force to overcome the repulsive ionic forces and hold together relatively large masses of fine solid agglomerates suspended in fluids. Since flocculation occurs after the fine suspension passes through a magnetic field generated by magnets surrounding a pipe section, the simplicity of the process and economic advantage makes magnetic flocculation very attractive.

Throughout the world, sedimentary basins are exploited for many different minerals. Frequently, the extractive methods conflict with one another. A case in point is the proximity of oil and gas operations and the mining of coal. Generally, the interference between the two industries lies in the fact that the reserves over- lie or underlie one another. Mining of coal generally is developed on a rectangular pattern in a horizontal mode while oil and gas drilling is developed on a radial pattern in a vertical mode. Coal mining has exhausted vast acreages in various basins with many of those basins being drilled for oil and gas. Those existing wells create problems by requiring the unrecoverable coal pillars to support the well bore, or to make special provisions in order to mine through an existing well. The system works ... more or less; but there are little or no provisions made for additional drilling unless the vast majority of those new wells are drilled through mined-out sections (gob) of those mines. Many states have rules and regulations governing the drilling of oil and gas wells through gob; but, some companies and some regulatory agencies or personnel have deemed such drilling as a hazard to the mining operations. This paper explores the history, technical standards, and safety aspects of drilling oil and gas wells though the gob of worked-out and active mines. It is the opinion of the author that such drilling can be conducted safely while eliminating the re- quired changes in mine projections and the loss of recoverable coal in the form of well pillars.

The Environment Weipa is located at 12° south latitude on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, North Queensland, Australia. The climate is tropical with most of the 1 600 mm. average annual rainfall falling between November and March. During the short winter months (May/ August) the weather is clear and pleasant, with temperatures seldom exceeding 27°C.Throughout the remainder of the year, conditions are frequently oppressive due to consistent high ambient temperatures accompanied by high humidity. The terrain is of low relief, and generally not more than 6 to 10m. above mean sea level adjacent to the coast. The coastline features numerous short estuaries which discharge run-off from the heavy rains collected by creeks and rivers. The whole area is covered by an open forest, the predominant species of which is Eucalyptus tetradonta. These eucalypts have only limited commercial value and are heavily infested with termites. Despite the fact that Weipa is close to the location of the first reported sighting of the Australian coastline by a European (William Janz - 1606), it remains very isolated. There is no developed road or rail connection to centres of population, so that transport of practically all products, personnel and materials to and from Weipa is by sea and air. Lithium-ion battery pack fires pose great hazards to the safety and health of miners. A detailed experimental study has been conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) to investigate the effectiveness of different fire suppression systems on Li-ion battery pack fire extinguishment. Tests were conducted in a well-ventilated container. Two sizes of battery packs (12V, 24V) were heated by heater strips to trigger thermal runaway and fire. Water mist with different flow rates, ABC powder, type D dry chemical, and water mist with F500 additives were used as the fire suppression agents. Multiple thermocouples were installed on the battery packs to measure the temperature evolution during the tests. The results indicated that the water mist with F500 additives is the most effective suppressant among the agents tested. Dry chemicals, however, do quench the fire for a moment, but cannot prevent re-ignition of the battery since they do not provide enough cooling. The findings of this paper can be used to develop safer battery fire suppression techniques in mining environments.

The Duval Corporation Sierrita copper and molybdenum mining complex is located approximately twenty-three miles south of Tucson, Arizona. The original open pit mine, Esperanza, was put into operation in 1958 and utilized one tailings dam until the Sierrita operation began in 1970, and a second pond was started. Both tailings operations continued to be operated separate and independently of each other until 1977, when the Esperanza Mill was temporarily shut down, and the Esperanza Tailings Dam was retired from service. Except for short periods of use, no new tailings were put on the surface. With the reactivation of the Esperanza Mill in 1979, the Esperanza tailings were combined with the Sierrita Mill tailings and put on the Sierrita Dam, leaving the Esperanza Dam in a retired state.

Coal is a major source of energy in the world today and will, undoubtedly, continue to be so for the next few centuries. Naturally, a great number of studies has been made of its physical and chemical properties. Unfortunately, the work on technical properties which influence the mining of coal and the consequent yield of inflammable gases and respirable dust particles has not progressed at a comparable pace. Coal is a brittle material. Irrespective of the mechanism of breaking coal, some dust is always produced. In mining parlance dust is defined as solid particle, smaller than 100 microns (micron = 10-6 meter), in size Coal dust, when raised into a cloud, creates two well known hazards in mines, namely, the coal dust explosion and Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CMP). The latter is, perhaps, the greatest environmental hazard in U.S. coal mines today. In this context it is not only natural but also necessary to investigate the proneness of a coal seam to respirable dust production. It has been established that the amount of dust produced is a function of two groups of variables (1), (2), viz. (1) Material dependent variables, e.g., moisture content, compressive strength, hardness, etc. (ii) Breaking mechanism dependent variables, e.g., type of machine, depth of cut, etc.

World demand for metallized iron continues to increase, keeping pace with steelmaking requirements for lower-cost hot metal. Virgin iron ore and in-plant oxide fines can be reduced to direct reduced iron (DRI) and hot-briquetted iron (HBI). Maumee Research & Engineering Inc. (MR&E) developed an improved coal-based process for the cost-effective production of either DRI or HBI. Starting with dry compaction, the process combines the latest technology for material preparation, rotary hearth furnace construction and environmental control. Coarse iron ore fines are blended with pulverized nonmetallurgical coal to produce a highly metallized (>90%) product. This paper presents production and installation cost data based on operating and under-construction iron oxide reduction facilities.

Adsorption experiments were conducted at two different solids loadings, to investigate the mechanism of oleate adsorption on apatite. Adsorption density at pH 10 was found to be dependent on solids loading in an oleate concentration region where surface precipitation could occur. Analysis of adsorption isotherms indicated three distinct regions of adsorption. In the region I (below the region of calcium oleate precipitation), molecular adsorption was observed. Simultaneous molecular adsorption and surface precipitation occurred in region II, while surface precipitation was predominant in region III along with some bulk precipitation. Correlation between flotation of apatite with sodium oleate and the mode of oleate interaction with the surface is established.

Subsidence profiles above two adjacent panels in Illinois are compared with pro- files predicting subsidence behavior obtained using the (i) National Coal Board (NCB, 1975) method, (ii) the profile function method and (iii) the influence function method. The NCB method predicts the maximum subsidence values at the center of the troughs accurately, but, the overall shapes of these predicted profiles do not match the profiles from the measured data well. Consistent values for the angles of draw were measured but these angles were different in the transverse (average value 43 degrees) and in the longitudinal (average value 17.5 degrees) directions. Time dependent subsidence effects are shown to be small but measurable. These displacements continue at a linear rate for at least a 12 month period. A comparison of measured horizontal distances, interpreted as horizontal strain, and the NCB predictions for strain shows that the peak measured strains are greater by a factor f about four than the predicted strains. The relationship between surface curvature and strain is investigated. Problems associated with calculation of surface curvatures from vertical displacement data are highlighted and a recommendation is made for future studies to consider direct measurement of this parameter. Surface curvatures above a moving face are found to be about three times less than the curvatures at the stationary end of the panel. On the other hand, a hyperbolic tangent profile function is shown to serve as an accurate predictive tool for subsidence behavior in two adjacent longwall panels at Old Ben Number 24 mine in Illinois. This function predicts not only the vertical displacements but also the surface curvatures above both panels. Influence functions are shown to be more problematic, although potentially more flexible, in their application than the profile functions.

Sometimes a project is born easy, sometimes a project has a hard time being born. Probably every project can say we had tremendous problems to overcome and they would all be right. This project had all things happen to it. Born easy, a hard time after being born, there were tremendous problems to overcome but here it is, a major copper project, a major operation, and a new source of copper for Mexico and the world market. La caridad is an ore body located in the state of Sonora in northwestern Mexico. It is at an elevation of 1,200 meters above sea level and the nearest major city is Hermosillo, the capital city of Sonora. Hermosillo is located approximately 270 kms (about 168 miles) to the southwest of la caridad. North of la caridad, 130 kms (about 81 miles), is the U.S. border town of Douglas, Arizona, which has a sister city on the Mexican side of the border -Agua Prieta.

The Emerald Mine No. 1, located in southwestern Pennsylvania is presently owned and operated by Cyprus Minerals of Englewood, Colorado. High volatile bituminous coal is produced from the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam by both longwall and continuous mining methods. The coal is then mechanically cleaned on site utilizing a combination of heavy media separation and froth flotation methods prior to shipment to both the metallurgical and steam coal markets. The Emerald Mine is presently producing 2.8 million raw tons per year, while liberating approximately 6.5 million ft per day of methane. In light of the methane liberation rate, ventilation requirements have been significant and have always received utmost priority and consideration. Figure 1 shows the locations of the current and proposed shafts. Emerald utilizes two Joy (Model M120-58-880) axial vane fans on shafts No. 1, No. 2R, No. 3R. (one operational, one stand-by) The use of computer simulation of various ventilation networks was initially employed during the design stages (1975-1977) and has been utilized through the present. Obviously, the initial planning, under the ownership of Lykes Resources, was strictly theoretical. All the quantities were proposed and the resistances were based on prior simulations of other mines and mathematical formulas. However, once the mine was moderately developed, actual values were recorded and utilized. Calculation of consistent steady-state mass balances in operating metallurgical plants and pilot plants is of interest for many reasons. In general, enough data can - and should - be collected to overdefine the system, i.e., permit calculation of nonmeasured quantities via more than one path. In such cases, resulting steady-state metallurgical mass balances rarely close due to sampling, analysis and/ or instrument error. Indeed, determination of a valid calculational sequence for complicated process flowsheets with multiple recycle streams can prove quite difficult. Here we present and discuss a method that has proven useful in analysis of numerous grinding circuit flowsheets of varying-degrees of complexity our technique requires only a consistent process flowsheet with appropriate associated data and arbitrary numbering of streams and equipments. Process topology and user data are decoded to yield a set of "search" or base variables and a set of "calculated" variables in solids, water, particle size and splitter parameter space. This procedure greatly speeds subsequent actual mass balance adjustment calculations since perturing certain variables (e.g., a solids value) does not require recalculation of other variables (e.g., the water balance). Finally, internal search and calculated variables are back converted to User units and used in a Sum-of-Squares criterion. Global minimization of this performance functional then yields a consistent mass balance in a least, squares sense. Weighting factors of choice can be used. Examples illustrate application of these methods.

A significant technological development is discussed for the processing of certain problem power plant flyashes which contain a high water soluble mineral content and which are known to yield inferior flyash based brick. This development is based on the addition of hydrochloric acid to the flyash-bottom ash-sodium silicate blends used for the production of flyash based structures. Favorable changes are evident in (1) sodium silicate consumption, where often approximately one-half of the amount used for making brick from normal flyash is required; (2) processing costs; and (3) strength and appearance of the resulting freshly formed green and fired structural products. In some high cost instances-(above the cost of 30 dollars or less per thousand brick estimated for normal flyashes) hydrochloric acid additions can replace or reduce other costly additives required with problem flyashes to result in a savings of as much as nine dollars per thousand brick. These developments offer promising possibilities for utilizing problem flyashes as well as flyashes which may come into contact with water soluble, sulfur as a result of the eventual application of certain experimental air pollution control processes.
