Since the record year of 1981 through 1985 the tonnage of weighting materials (barite and other heavy minerals) used in drilling fluids has decreased an estimated 49%. As in the past, barite still makes up over 90% of the minerals used for weighting materials in drilling fluid. Domestic production of barite has decreased 69% since 1981 and imported barite has made up over 50% of the total barite consumed since 1982. See Figure 1 for usage of barite. The number of operating grinding plants has decreased from 69 in 1982 to 39 at the end of 1985. With the decrease in demand of weighting materials for drilling fluids and an over capacity of grinding existing, prices for weighting materials have decreased dramatically. Although the American Petroleum Institute has not changed any of the specifications for barite, some users have initiated their own new specifications and have proposed to have them included in the API specifications. The exploration for and development of oil and gas dictates the level of weighting material used in the drilling fluids industry. Most forecasters do not foresee (or predict) increases in the level of drilling until the 90's. The primary or unground barite produced in the U.S. mines has a difficult time competing with imported barite due to the location of the mines. These mines are located in North Central Nevada, with small tonnages being produced in California, Missouri, Illinois, Montana and Washington. The major reason, is the difference in transportation costs from the mines versus ocean freight rates from the foreign ports to the major area of use, the U.S. Gulf. Since 1981, the production of primary barite has decreased from 2,849,000/ST (2,584,596/MT) in 1981 to an estimated 890,000/ ST (807,403/MT) in 1985(1). If it were not for the use of unit trains by some producers the production of primary barite in the U.S. would have probably declined another 20% in 1985. During the same period, of the total amount of barite consumed in the U.S., imported barite ore increased from 417, in 1981 to 65% in 1985. The major exporting countries to the U.S. during this period were China 46.27, Morocco 15.27., Chile 10%, Peru 8.4%, India 7.9%, Mexico 5.4%, Thailand 3.9% and Ireland 2.3%.

This paper describes an experimental setup for multiple-fan ventilation systems at the ventilation laboratory of the WVU Department of Mining Engineering. Housed in a 30 ft by 70 ft room, the experimental setup consists of three 18 in. variable-speed axial-flow fans, the 18 in. diameter fiberglass tubing and fittings for arranging networks, and the pitot tube measuring and data acquisition system. The fiberglass tubing and fans can be organized into the non-planner network of two fans or three-fans. It is mainly designed for studying the characteristic curves, operating points, and fan stall for the multiple-fan ventilation system.

Innovation is enhanced by specifically designed policies regarding organizational structure and staffing, daily management practices and compensation and incentives.

For centuries Thailand has been a significant, though primarily unofficial, producer of gold. Panning has been the traditional way of making a living for innumerable villagers during the December to May dry season following the harvest. During this period groups can be seen working the streams, rivers, fields and dry valleys at as many as 90 localities in 28 provinces. Attesting to their efforts are the five and a half ton solid gold Buddha at Wat Trimit and much of the gold jewelry sold in Bangkok. This traditional panning will continue, and probably become more extensive, in harmony with commercial endeavors using modern technology suitable for extraction of gold from types of deposits for which gravity separation would give very low recoveries. Several such deposits have been discovered in the course of geochemical and geological surveys conducted by the Royal Thai Department of Mineral Resources with the object of contributing to early interpretation of the results of a country-wide airborne survey.

Manufacture and mixing of flotation reagents at the mill site provides an economic and convenient method of maintaining a continuous and fresh supply of reagents for concentrator operations. Kennecott Copper Corporation has designed and built a Reagent Mixing Facility which incorporates new ideas in construction and fail-safe operation at its Nevada Mines Division concentrator. Highly sophisticated automation and instrumentation techniques are combined with safety procedures and equipment that meet and exceed all Federal and State safety requirements. Installation of the facility has minimized hazardous working conditions for the operator, isolated reagent preparation from production personnel and equipment, and reduced the time required for reagent preparation from three shifts to one shift per day.

Successful longwall gate entry design requires control of both vertical and horizontal stresses. Vertical, or overburden, stresses are most severe in the tailgate where they are concentrated by longwall panel extraction. Horizontal stresses, which are generally tectonic in origin, can be highly destructive during the development and headgate phases of longwall mining. The goal of this paper is to present the current state-of-the-art in detecting and controlling horizontal stresses. The information presented was collected through site investigations at 45 U.S. longwalls and an international literature review. The paper begins with a discussion of the present knowledge of regional in situ stress fields in the U.S. A review of available underground stress measurements from coal mines is presented, along with data collected by structural and petroleum geologists. The combined evidence indicates that a persistent ENE-EW trending stressfield is present throughout the eastern coalfields. Experience with horizontal stress in longwall mines is addressed next. The paper focuses on the northern Appalachian region, where the effects of horizontal stress have been most evident. Three case histories are discussed in detail, and the solutions each developed are highlighted. Observations made in the Southern Appalachian, Alabama, and Illinois coalfields are also described.

"INTRODUCTION Tunnel is a closed space structure and it is necessary to ensure the sufficient time and route for safe evacuation for the tunnel users in case of a tunnel fire. In order to do so, damages and collapse of the tunnel linings and the secondary disasters can be avoided. Furthermore, the road tunnel is one of important infrastructural facilities and stopping its function for a long time for a tunnel fire could cause a great economic loss. Therefore, the tunnel structure shall be the one which can be repaired as soon as possible, and the fire protection methods need to be selected among those which enable the service to start as early as possible. The necessity of the fire protection works is evaluated for the tunnel structure with the consideration of the expensive tunnel construction cost and the economic effects of the tunnel service. Naturally, the fire protection works, which can protect the tunnel linings from the tunnel fire with small repairs, are inevitable. Design engineers of the fire protection works estimate the scale of fire from the degree of damages on the linings and its repair cost, the effect of fire extinguishers placed inside of the tunnel, the secondary disasters in accordance with the tunnel lining damages if any, and the ratio of fire protection cost calculated from tunnel operation cost. Based on this information, the engineers design the fire protection works according to the permissible limits Among the design cases of the tunnel fire protection in Japan, as shown in Table 1, there is no cases that used the fire temperature-time curve to design the fire protection works for large fire caused by vehicles catching fire. However, the most of cases used 30-60 minutes for fire duration based on the entry prohibition of dangerous goods carrying vehicles or the effect of early fire fighting. This paper will study the variation between different methods used for fire protection in road tunnel in Japan to evaluate them and try to found some recommendations. Especial l care will be attention to Polypropylenes (PP) which is starting to be applied lately."

In recent years the widespread problems of air and water pollution generated by both population and industrial expansion have become a major public concern. Therefore, many municipalities are striving to achieve more efficient wastewater treatment processes so these wastewater's can be reintroduced into the waterways of our nation with little or no detrimental effects on the future beneficial use of that water. With this, improved treatment comes an ever increasing volume of wastewater sludge which must be disposed of in a manner of minimal impact on the environment. Furthermore, with demand for energy continually accelerating in this nation, our concern over high oil prices and our increasing dependency on foreign oil sources, there has been an ever growing interest in the largest energy source that are nation has, coal. However, surface mining of coal can cause many environmental problems when adequate precautions are not faithfully adhered to. These problems include water pollution from silt and/or clay erosion and acid runoff, produced by oxidation and hydrolysis of pyrite; i.e., FeS2 + 3/02 + H20 + FeSO4 + H2SO4. One method of wastewater sludge disposal which can utilize large volumes of sludge for a beneficial project that may not compound our environmental problems is spray irrigation, to either depleted farmland or to abandoned strip-mined soils. Sludge is characteristically high in organics, as well as having near neutral to alkaline pH properties. With these two qualities it possesses a potential for neutralizing acid strip mine spoils, which would enhance the establishment of a vegetative ground cover. "Fluctuation in market price of mineral products has enforced mining companies to cut down their operating costs. One useful way of reducing operating costs in mining operations is to make optimal operational decisions, incorporating efficient mining fleet management systems (FMS). Over the last 50 years, several types of FMS have been developed and introduced in the mining systems around the world. However, there are two major shortcomings in existing systems. Firstly, none of the existing systems consider effects of the short-term plan on dynamic truck assignment. Secondly, most of the existing FMSs make decisions in a way that optimize a specific objective while ignoring others. Herein, we propose a multi stage and multi objective FMS that deals with aforementioned shortcomings of the currently available systems. The developed FMS, in its upper stage, links semi-dynamic operational decision making process to the short-term production plan by simultaneously assigning shovels to mining faces and allocating trucks to the shovels by implementing its first multi objective decision making model. Then in its second stage, in a real time dynamic decision making process, it assigns trucks to shovels and corresponding destinations by optimizing its second multi objective decision making model. The developed fleet management system has been verified using an Iron ore case study and the results are presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION Open pit mining method is the most common method to mine mineral from the earth. Based on Wetherelt and van der Wielen (2011) there exist 2500 open pit metal mines that are categorized as industrial scale mines. Over all of those, the amount of material handled using truck and shovel material handling system is more than the amount handled by all other systems together (Humphrey & Wagner, 2011).It has been proven by several studies that more than 50 percent of operating cost in a truck and shovel based open pit mining operation is accounted for material handling (Moradi Afrapoli & Askari-Nasab, 2017, Alarie & Gamache, 2002, Ahangaran et al., 2012). Thus, introducing even 1 to 2 percent cut in its material handling cost saves huge amount of money for the stakeholders. Over the last 50 years, two major areas have been identified to cut this cost. On one hand mining industries have been implementing equipment with higher production capacities, and on the other hand, researchers have been developing operations research techniques to make dynamic decisions as close to optimal as possible to deduct operational costs in truck and shovel based mining operations."

Aragonite "sand," an oolitic lime-stone, is distributed throughout the Bahamas on the Grand Bahama Bank, adjacent to Southeast Florida. Bahamian deposits hold 75-100 billion tons of recoverable Aragonite. Aragonite's precipitation from seawater over 700 years ago assures low contaminates, making it a pure material for such industries as cement, glass, etc. A 90-acre, man-made production island was built south of Bimini, adjacent to ocean shipping channels mining is by cutterhead, suction dredge, dewatering, and stockpiling for further drainage and shipping. Aragonite is transferred to the U. S. East and Gulf Coasts via bulk carriers to points of sale.

Refractory ores and concentrates containing silver tend to form Ag-jarosite during autoclave oxidation. Silver extraction from the oxidation products is therefore low, unless a hot lime treatment step to decompose Ag-jarosite precedes cyanidation. Since silver iodide is very stable but soluble in cyanide solutions, the formation and decomposition of Ag-jarosite in the presence of iodine species was studied. Results indicate that Ag-jarosite formation could be prevented in favour of H3O-jarosite and AgI while oxidizing Ag2S under industrial autoclaving conditions, when the total iodine species to Ag mole ratio exceeded 5. Lower ratios gave proportionally more Ag-jarosite and less AgI. Under these conditions existing Ag-jarosite was also found to decompose in H30-jarosite and AgI.

A modelling study has been carried out on the flotation of the Moinho (Portugal) polymetallic sulphide ore, based on pilot plant data. It shows that successfully modelling the flotation of such an ore needs to take into account not only the influence of particle size, but also that of the mineral liberation of the ore. The benefits deriving from the research have been twofold in that the study has: 1. Improved the understanding of (a) the response of the ore to froth flotation and (b) the influence of regrinding the zinc middlings; and 2. Provided models for the optimization of the industrial flotation circuits when the plant starts up in 1991.

The bulk scavenger tailing from Aberfoyle's Hellyer Concentrator, which represents about one-third of the total tailing, runs about 2.5-3 g/t gold and 140-200 g/f silver. Both values are very finely disseminated, particularly the gold. Aberfoyle wished to establish whether ultra-fine grinding followed directly by cyanide leaching could be applied to the tailing for recovery of gold and silver. The work comprised the determination of gold and silver recoveries as a function of grind size and leaching time, the specific energy consumption required for continuous wet grinding of the tailing to the specified product size in a small horizontal continuous stirred mill, and an estimate of the rate of media consumption. The maximum extraction of gold, 23.3% was obtained from the finest product, with the highest cyanide concentration and longest leach time, confirming earlier work. A similar result was obtained for silver. The specific energy requirement for milling rose from 27.7 kWh/t for a P80 of 8.1 um to 219 kWh/t for a Pea of 2.3 um. The consumption of ceramic media was about 1.6 g/kg of final product. An extensive QEM'SEM Trace Mineral Search on the unground tailing failed to identify any gold-bearing particles but did identify silver-bearing particles which displayed a variety of textural associations and liberation characteristics.

The Gosowong epithermal quartz-adularia vein, in the Halmahera magmatic arc, is a new discovery in an area of primary tropical rain forest with no history of gold mining or mineralization. The newly recognized mineral district also contains a number of other epithermal vein systems, two centres of porphyry Cu-Au mineralization, and a number of argillic and advanced argillic alteration zones that may be related to underlying mineralization. Gosowong was discovered and tested through the application of basic exploration techniques including drainage sampling, soil sampling, trenching, magnetics, IP, and diamond drilling. Lapse time from the initial reconnaissance discovery of a stream sediment anomaly to the release of inferred resource estimates of approximately 1.0m ounces was just over 3 years.

California's Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) was passed in 1975 to identify and protect mineral resources in areas of high land use conflict and ensure reclamation of mined lands. Under SMARA, aggregate resource availability is quantified and compared to forecasted demand in specific market regions. Fifteen regions studied thus far cover 51,800 km2 (20,000 sq miles) and contain 45 Gt (50 billion st) of high-quality aggregate resources that have been legally designated as "regionally significant," providing a measure of protection previously unavailable. SMARA reports and state testimony at local hearings have supplied objective information and helped reduce conflict in mine permitting decisions.

A comprehensive study of the environmental conditions of the area affected by the Colfax and Cheswick Power Stations is of extreme importance to Duquesne Light Company. The residents in the valley where the two plants are located have complained for many years about the emissions from the Colfax Plant which is of the 1920 to 1930 vintage and which has a capability of generating approxi¬mately 200 Mw. They were extremely happy to hear that the Company had plans for shutting it down, however, they were extremely unhappy to hear that we were planning to build another even larger one to take its place in the same vicinity, namely the Cheswick Plant with a capability of 570 Mw. They had visions of a plant twice the size of the Colfax Plant and belching out twice as much smoke. A few of the citizens from that area were most vehement at the public hearings that were held by the Allegheny County Air Pollution Bureau for obtaining an installation permit. With two power plants already existing in that area (Duquesne Light Company's Colfax Plant and West Penn Power's Springdale Plant), the primary concern of the Allegheny County Air Pollution Control Bureau was that the Cheswick Station might increase air pollution levels beyond what they considered to be dangerous limits. It became very evident that the Allegheny County Air Pollution Control Bureau would be extremely reluctant to grant installation and operating permits unless they were satisfied that the new plant would not increase local pollution levels and that we were taking sufficient steps to monitor the emissions from our plants and also the ambient air in the general area. We concluded that an extensive air pollution monitoring program must be conducted in the area to determine the effects of the operation of our plants. Minerals, together with agricultural and forestry products, are the primary source of wealth produced in the United States. Although the production of minerals requires only a small fraction of the state's total land surface, as compared with either agriculture or forestry (Table 1), mining activities generally are much more disruptive to the land surface, and rehabilitation is more complex and costly. The past 10 to 15 years have witnessed a sharp increase in mineral exploration and mining, particularly coal mining, which has brought with it an increase in conflict over land use and an increase in negotiations for purposes of mineral prospecting and mining. The general increase in the production and consumption of coal and the particular increase in the percentage of coal extracted by surface mining methods coupled with a growing nationwide environmental consciousness have created increased public concern and in some cases outrage over mining activities. Although there is ample evidence to indicate that it is possible to plan for and design mining activities in such a way that they are compatible with other activities and can thus be made a part of a sequential land-use plan, there is a general lack of knowledge regarding the importance of mining as the provider of basic and essential raw materials to supply society's constantly expanding and increasing mineral needs. This lack of knowledge extends to such matters as land and mineral rights negotiations, the character of mineral deposits and minerals, mineral economics, and land-use planning.

The Port Radium mine of Eldorado Mining and Refining Limited, located on Great Bear Lake only a few miles from the Arctic Circle in north-western Canada, is the oldest uranium producer in Canada, The first concentrates were produced in 1933 and except for a period between 1940 and 1942 the mill has operated continuously. Although it is located in a remote area, and compared to more recent mines in other areas is a small tonnage operation, nonetheless the relatively high grade of the Port Radium ore has permitted operation to date on an economical basis. The mill process at Port Radium includes the original gravity concentration mill, and since 1952 an acid leaching plant which treats tailings from the gravity mill and tailings recovered by dredging of residues from underwater dumps in Great Bear Lake. The pregnant solution from the leach plant has to date been processed through aluminum reduction to yield an intermediate grade uranous phosphate-arsenate precipitate, Because of the rising costs of the aluminum reduction process, and its sensitivity to ore composition, Eldorado became interested in possible application to Port Radium of the solvent extraction processes of which we were obtaining increasing information in the latter part of 1954 and during 1955.
