The quantity of coal recovered by diamond coring techniques is not sufficient in many instances to make meaningful coking and/or ash fouling tests. Quantities in excess of that obtained by conventional coring techniques, usually in amounts exceeding 500 pounds, has been designated bulk sampling. During the past three years, AMAX Coal Company has utilized five methods of bulk sampling. It was our desire to obtain a bulk sample that was diagnostic of the seam by the most expedient and economical method. From the beginning all of our efforts have been directed to methods which would extract the required coal from slim boreholes which provide quick and inexpensive access to the coal seam, regardless of depth, terrain and accessability. In our efforts and investigation several large diameter cores have been taken from thick coal seams at relatively shallow depths in easily drilled rocks. On the other hand, for deeper thin seams multiple large diameter coring is more expensive and time consuming. It is somewhat less expensive when multiple cores are taken from a single slim borehole utilizing deflection coring, although considerable skill is necessary.

When discussing stock market investments, a company's performance is important. But so is the financial community's perception of that performance. To be sure, a good product or service, coupled with sound manage¬ment, remains important but is no longer enough. How stock analysts view a company's performance has become equally important. A major task of a mining company's investor relations officer, then, is to build and maintain a positive perception of the company to mining analysts throughout the world. That's a tough assignment in any market. The subject here, though, is gold. And, with its weakened price, gold companies must work harder to convince analysts their company is still a good investment. The analyst, on the other hand, must see through the corporate hype and decide whether it's worth recommending to clients as an investment. No simple task, either. Annual reports, 10-K forms, and quarterly reports only tell part of the mining company's story. Site visits, complete with discussions (sometimes interrogations) with a mine's principals, oftentimes tell an analyst more about a company's investment potential than the annual or quarterly report. So it was that three of the nation's major gold companies arranged a three-day tour of their gold operations in Nevada for a group of 22 analysts and a pair of mining industry scribes. The analysts represented investment houses the US, Canada, and England. The host companies and mines visited included FMC Gold's Paradise Peak mine, Amax Gold's Sleeper and Wind Mountain mines, and Battle Mountain Gold's Surprise and Fortitude mines.

Introduction The vibration energy that travels beyond the zone of rock breakage is wasted - all it does is cause damage and annoyance. Under favorable geologic conditions, this energy may travel many kilometers before it finally drops bellow the background noise level. This has forced the introduction of more restrictive limits to the allowable vibration levels. To maintain the profitability of a mine or quarry and to comply with environmental protection legislation, blasting needs to be performed in a more predictable way that will ensure that the final results are optimal in both mining and environmental terms. Minimization of ground and induced structural vibration is, therefore, a matter of good blasting practice -not just an attempt to avoid complaints from neighbors. A new approach to blast vibration minimization is presented. The method utilizes the existence of the local minimums in the frequency spectrum of single-hole blast vibration. The results are presented as a delay map showing maximum ground or structural vibration velocity for many combinations of interhole and interrow delays. A blast engineer can use this map to select an optimal combination of delays that will produce a low vibration velocity at a selected location and, at the same time, will be acceptable from the point of view fragmentation or muck pile shape. Response of structures A typical single-story building has two distinctive forms of vibration. The first form is a translatory vibration of the building superstructure (frame), and the second form is a flexural-bending vibration of the structural elements such as walls and floors (Siskind et al., 1980). Walls and floors will have several modes of oscillation. The most important is the fundamental mode of the vibration, as this mode will have the lowest frequency, the largest amplitude and will cause the largest deformations. The vibration of walls and floors is also a source of secondary vibration within a building, due to the movement of loose objects, e.g., furniture and wall fittings (Dowding, 1985). The subjective estimate of the amplitude of a vibration by the occupants of a house will be unrealistically high due to the effect of the secondary vibrations. It is now well recognized that human perception of ground vibration begins at levels that are far below those that will produce minor damage to the most fragile structures. In mining and quarrying operations, complaints regarding vibration levels tend to be determined more by human perception or annoyance rather than by observations of damage. Ground vibrations on the order of 0.08 mm/s (0.0032 ips) (Walter and Walter, 1979; Murray, 1987) can be felt, and they are often subjectively estimated to be about 100 times greater. Amplification of ground vibration in the structure depends on the amount of energy in the ground vibration spectrum that is in the vicinity of the structure's resonant frequencies together with the damping ratio of the structure at these particular frequencies. One way to avoid significant vibration amplification in a structure is to shift the dominant part of the ground vibration away from the resonant frequency range of the structure. The presented method allows for the selection of the optimum blast timing (interhole and interrow delay times) to minimize the resultant ground vibration amplitudes in a given frequency range. It also allows the selection of suboptimal, but still acceptable, blast delay times, which may be preferable from the point of view of overall blast performance. Determining frequency ranges of importance in structures In attempting to avoid amplification of vibrations in the structure, ground vibration amplitude of frequencies close to the resonant frequencies of the building needs to be minimized. The width of the frequency-minimization region is determined by the value of damping in the building. If the damping ratio is low, then the frequency-minimization region around the resonant frequency will be relatively broad. By shifting the dominant part of the ground-vibration energy into the frequency region much higher than the resonant frequency of the building (1.5 to 2 times), it is possible to achieve efficient vibration isolation of the building. In such cases, the structural dynamic amplification of ground vibration will be less than unity. The first step in this minimization process is the determination of the structural resonant frequency. Prior to April, 1961, the coal charge to Clairtonts coke oven batteries was 3" x 0" mine waslied coal having approximately 6.0% to 7.0% moisture. Even at this size and moisture content, the arching, rat-holing and hang-up was excessive and the effective live storage of coal was only 60% to 70% of the rated capacity of the coal bunkers, depending upon the moisture of the coal. In addition, many production delays were encountered in the time and methods required to fill the larry cars. The need for an improved metallurgical coke led to the introduction of pulverized coal to a portion of the plant in 196 1. When the full potential of the pulverizing equipment was realized, we were able to serve seven batteries in our second unit of batteries with pulverized coal through two coal bunkers. The discharge hoppers of these bunkers were equipped with air vibrators to assist the flow of pulverized coal into the larry cars. The vibrators were helpful in this respect but required considerable maintenance and caused damage to the bin plates.

"INTRODUCTION Of all the natural resources being taxed by the needs of the modern world, perhaps the most important is the continually expanding demand for water resources. As water becomes scarcer, and increasingly important, new technologies are needed to find innovative ways to preserve this precious resource. In Chile, for example, the mining industry is investing billions of dollars to build desalination plants and pipelines; bringing ocean water as far as 200 kilometers inland to meet their demand and maintain operations. It is a full-blown crisis for that nation and a top priority for their government and economy. It has been reported that world water consumption will increase by 40 percent in the next 10 years, representing nearly exponential growth. In the U.S., as more and more communities continue to be built, more drain on the current water infrastructure is created. For 25 percent of people and operations that rely on water from aquifers, this source is being consumed at a rate that will create significant problems meeting the demand in as few as two generations.1 A PROACTIVE APPROACH When it comes to controlling dust at your operation, whether a landfill, a transfer station, a haul road or another ancillary area, what are the options? We know watering is not the answer, but at the same time, we need to prevent dust from flying to ensure a safe environment and keep our skies clear of pollution, for both regulatory requirements and neighbors. Creating a Dust Mitigation Program instead of looking to buy the first dust control product off the shelf is a first step to conserve water and, at the same time, maintain the operational demands and environmental standards for a given site. The program concept is straightforward enough. However, the process of effectively constructing and executing a program is quite involved. When undertaking a program, each manager needs to work with their team and their partners/vendors in analyzing the following elements: 1. Site Expectations—It is important to understand how to balance your internal standards with your regulatory requirements, as well as how to keep your neighbors satisfied. 2. Site Aggregate—Variations in native soil, such as clay content or gravel levels, greatly affect the approach that will yield the highest results. 3. Climate—Relative humidity and seasonal variations are critical to achieving predictable results through product choice, application frequency and timing. 4. Daily Traffic—The type and frequency of traffic is an essential variable for site management. 5. Environmental Responsibilities—If you have additional, specifically defined responsibilities, the approach to your site may vary. 6. Budget—While efficiency is the goal of any program, some sites will have more stringent restrictions than others. 7. Current Usage Rates—Document and understand where you’re starting from, both with water, supporting products, and maintenance so that effective measurement of results is possible."

This paper presents a rock mechanics investigation of the time-dependent behavior of the rock immediately surrounding the excavation in a hypothetical one-entry coal mine based on the geology of the Illinois coalfields Research in the area of time-dependency is almost nonexistent and, therefore, this research was performed to make inroads into this neglected research area. Numerical analysis of a typical one-entry coal mine in an Illinois basin was performed using the commercial finite difference program FLAC3D. The immediate roof of the coal entry was assumed to be a shale formation. Shale in other formations has shown a tendency to creep with time. Therefore, in this study the authors modeled the shale in the roof using time-dependent characteristics. The input properties were taken from laboratory creep tests performed on shale. Model runs were performed at different stages, mimicking the progressive excavation of the entry. The model results showed that stresses in the roof attained the limit of yielding. Using Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria, potential zones of failure were also predicted. The results showed that the current computational capacities are sufficient to explore this previously uncharted territory of ground control.

China, a globally recognized major mining country, holds one of the largest quantities of tailings pond country in the world. The total number of mines in China has been ranked first in the world. It is a major concern for Chinese safety management to give great importance for tailings pond safety, stability and sustainable development. For the past few years, China has increased efforts to investigate and govern discrete issues of tailings and to carry out a series of special renovation and comprehensive treatment actions to improve safety management levels and to decrease the likelihood of tailings pond accidents. In the end of 2015, China successfully eliminated hazardous tailings ponds and dangerous tailings ponds. Moreover, the total number of tailings decreased from 12,273 to 8,869. However, there are still 1,425 "head-top" tailings that threaten the lower masses’ safety. This greatly signifies the Chinese tailings pond safety, stability as well as sustainable development. In turn, this may improve the Chinese tailings life cycle safety management system and help reach the goal of attaining closed-loop management in the tailings pond life cycle. Based on the summary of the tailings pond accidents in both China and other countries from 1961 to 2015, and by analyzing the types and causes of accident, this paper investigated the successful experiences and effective measurements of British Columbia (Canada) and Australia in the tailings pond life cycle safety management. This paper summed up each country’s tailings life cycle safety management requirements and analysed the characteristics and differences of tailings safety management by comparing 5 aspects: tailings life cycle safety management process, main design parameter, construction requirements, monitoring, and the tailings pond closing management. Based on these observations, this paper suggests some measurements to improve the tailings pond life cycle safety management in China, such as strengthening tailings pond safety management, improving tailings classification, increasing design parameter values, establishing mine reclamation fund, and so on.

From some of the largest tunnel projects in the some of the most vibrant cities, to smaller projects in remote corners of the globe, the Robbins Co. announced two tunneling projects in which its tunnel boring machines will be used. Robbins earth pressure balance (EPB) machines undercut Downtown Zhengzhou. Zhengzhou, a city of 7 million people, is set to become a crossroads for rail commerce in China. The country?s future main routes, traveling between Beijing and Guangzhou (North-South), and between Xuzhou and Lanzhou (East-West), will intersect in the city. The plan includes up to four rail lines in Zhengzhou itself, which will eventually link up to the national lines. Excavation of Zhengzhou Metro?s new Line 1 tunnels began on Sept. 28, 2010, when the first of two 6.3-m (20.7-ft) diameter Robbins earth pressure balance (EPB) machines was launched from a 16-m- (52-ft-) deep shaft.

Mine development has evolved in the past 15 years from a human-paced system using hand-held drills and track-bound equipment to a mechanized system using specialized equipment for each component of the development cycle. In most Canadian hard-rock mines, face advance is achieved by the following sequential activities: drilling, explosive loading, mucking and ground support. The state-of-the-art for each work element is reviewed and methods for performance estimates proposed. The entire development system and its production capabilities are considered based on equipment reliabilities, spare units, haulage distances, and muck bay spacing. The effect of the number of working faces on the system's performance will also be analyzed. Manuscript not received in time for publication.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) performed a feasibility analysis for the purpose of either modifying, supplementing, or replacing its two main mine fans. The WIPP, located near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) fa¬cility designed to demonstrate the permanent, safe disposal of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste in a deep bedded salt deposit. Since the centrifugal fans were installed in 1988, multiple op¬erational and performance concerns have been identified. A com¬prehensive engineering study was conducted in 1995 to: 1) Qualify and quantify operational concerns, 2) Evaluate possible alternatives, and 3) Recommend an optimum solution. Multiple system modification and/or replacement scenarios were evaluated with associated cost estimates developed. The study considered replacement with either centrifugal or axial fans. Multiple fan duties are required at the WIPP. Therefore, Variable Frequency Drives and Inlet Vane Controls (IVC) were investigated for centrifugal fans. In-flight adjustable blades were investigated for axial fans. The study indicated that replacing the existing system with two double-width, double-inlet centrifugal fans equipped with IVCs was the best choice. This alternative provided the most desirable combination of: 1) ensuring the required operational readiness, and 2) improving system performance. The WIPP is currently planning to replace the first fan in 1997.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multi-element ground support system there is a need to know when the material has developed a threshold early compressive strength of approximately 1 MPa (145 psi) for safe re-entry of miner and machine into shotcreted mine workings. This equates to the material having developed enough strength to be self-supporting and allow for emplacement of the remaining support elements that require drilling of the shotcrete layer without degradation. NIOSH researchers have developed methods and portable test equipment to measure shotcrete strength on-site in the first six hours after application using the ASTM C 116-90 (1990) standard. These advances were demonstrated in tests on five commercially available shotcrete mixes, sprayed as dry shotcrete using the field expedient methods and equipment. The strength values from these tests allowed for real-time identification of the early strength threshold and were consistent with strengths reported using laboratory-type equipment. The findings of this NIOSH research for determining shotcrete early strength can improve mine safety by providing a method for determining initial site specific material property values to be used for design and as a means to conduct on-site quality control and monitoring during production.

The Bureau of Mines has been investigating several techniques, including the use of horizontal and vertical boreholes, to remove gas from coal in advance of mining. Horizontal boreholes drilled from underground workings as part of the mining cycle have been shown (Finfinger, 1980; Hagwood, 1983; Perry, 1978; Prosser, 1981; Thakur, 1980; VonSchonfeldt, 1982) to be very effective in providing short-term, immediate relief from high methane emissions. This technique has been widely accepted in the coal mining industry, but it does require close coordination to integrate the drilling and subsequent gas drainage and disposal into the projected mine development plan. Vertical boreholes can be placed several years in advance of mining to predrain gas from coalbeds over relatively large areas (Dunn, 1984; Elder, 1975; Lambert, 1980; Steidl, 1978; Stubbs, 1979). The vertical borehole technique has the additional advantage over horizontal boreholes of allowing work to be performed on the surface instead of in the more restrictive underground environment. However, except for the relatively large scale vertical borehole programs for both mine safety and commercial production in the Black Warrior Basin of Alabama (Dunn, 1984; Lambert, 1980; Stubbs, 1979), the technique has been underutilized. The primary reason for this seems to be a combination of the current economic climate in the coal industry, legal questions as to the ownership of coalbed gas, and potential roof damage from the stimulation treatments required to increase the characteristically low permeability of coalbeds to enhance gas production. The question of potential roof damage is the subject of this paper.

It is said that there is nothing new under the sun and this is certainly true about refractory gold Ores. Ores which have been refractory to treatment have been the bane of the Metallurgist's life ever since gold has been recognized as a metal valued for its indestructability, malleability and beauty. Webster's Dictionary defines "Refractory" as; "Resisting control or authority, stubborn, resistant to treatment or cure, unresponsive to stimuli, difficult to corrode or draw out," And gives as a synonym the word "unruly." I don't think any metallurgist would disagree with these definitions as they quite accurately describe refractory gold ores as we know them and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if many of you in this room today had applied far stonger language to your own refractory ores in the course of your metallurgical test programs. Pliny the elder put it very well when he wrote in 79 A.D., Gold is the first of man's follies, Silver the second." Perhaps Pliny was speaking of "unassayable gold" or "incipient gold." These are truly refrac tory ores which probably existed before Pliny's time and although many people have claimed to have solved their metallurgy the untold wealth that lies within them has never been bankable. On the other hand, Virgil is his Aenead, could very well have been speaking of refractory ores when he wrote; "Quid non mortalia pectora cogis, auri sacra fames!" which translates as, Accursed thirst for gold! What doest thou not compel mortals to do. Certainly, gold was extremely rare at that time because it had to be recovered by much labor from the then refractory ores and their refractoriness caused the early metallurgists (or alchemists if you will) to seek an easier way to produce it; thus the long and fruitless search for the "philosopher 's stone" which would aid in turn-

The mineral processing industry supplies raw materials to a wide variety of manufacturing sectors. Large companies such as Ford, Microsoft, and Johnson&Johnson have pledged carbon neutral supply chains in the coming decades, leaving suppliers to reevaluate their energy sources [1–3]. National Renewable Energy Lab [4] has partnered with over 700 organizations with similar goals in mind. The energy needs are broad in scope in the mineral processing industry. Generation IV of nuclear reactors, which is currently under development in both the private and public sector includes a class called microreactors like the small modular reactor XEnergy plans to install at Dow Chemical’s Gulf Coast facility by 2023 [5]. As the name implies, these are smaller than the utility scale nuclear power plants in operation today, and are intended to be more versatile. A specific reactor core design, along with modules could be selected to fit a certain application without needing to design a greenfield power plant. Basic water cooled designs could easily supply shaft work, electricity, and low grade process heat to a facility. More advanced designs, such as molten-salt-reactors and high-temperaturegas-reactors can achieve higher temperatures needed for ore roasting. Similarly, these reactors could produce hydrogen by high temperature electrolysis to use as combustion fuel and reducing atmosphere in blast furnaces.

Geotechnical, geological, and hydrogeological fieldwork and data collection for the mining industry is often conducted by younger, less-experienced staff members. In many cases, fieldwork personnel are recent college graduates or are otherwise relatively new to the mining industry. Due to busy schedules, staffing shortages, project budgets, and in some cases, poor management, new fieldwork hires often do not receive thorough training. In the past and the present, many workers in the mining industry learn(ed) by “doing.” While this is still considered to be the most practical approach and the easiest way for a company to determine the skill set of an employee, there is always some risk involved in the “feet to the fire” method. The reality is that field personnel are often collecting data on which major operational decisions will be made or on which regulators will base enforcement decisions. Inadequately trained or inexperienced field personnel may collect inaccurate data or fail to recognize key conditions that may influence decisions made by regulators, design engineers, mine managers, and corporate leaders. Even the best engineers may come to incorrect conclusions if they are starting with poor input data. Decisions based on inaccurate data often result in delays, budget issues, unsafe conditions, or even worse consequences. This paper provides numerous mining industry examples of incidences where inaccurately collected field information did, or could have, resulted in major adverse consequences. The paper also offers some simple approaches to minimizing the potential for such problems.

Since the 1940s, decanter centrifuges have become more important for increasingly complex solid-liquid or solid-liquid-liquid separation processes. Sometimes processed industrial or metalliferous minerals are abrasive or are treated with corrosive chemical agents. Traditional mining applications include the processing of coal, gravel and other products, where low-speed decanters, as well as screen bowl decanters and filters, dominate. These have been increasingly replaced by high-speed decanters during the last decade. Decanter centrifuges also started to play a key role in applications such as drilling muds, processing carbonates and separating SX crud in copper platinum ore concentrations of nickel and gold. Communication between machine producers and mineral processing engineers is vital for the right choice of materials and the design of the right decanter centrifuge for the individual process.

INTRODUCTION In order to understand the transport and deposition of radon daughters in mine atmospheres, it is necessary to know the variation in the attachment of the daughter atoms to particles as a function of particle size, composition, number density, relative humidity, temperature, and radon concentration, the free gaseous diffusion coefficients of the daughters, and the variation in the mass transfer of the activity, both free and attached to particles, to mine surfaces as a function of particle size distribution, surface roughness of the mine walls, and the flow conditions. If all of these parameters are known in a model system, it should be possible to understand the transport and fate of the airborne radioactivity in real mines under certain well-defined flow conditions. There have been a number of recent investigations of the attachment of radon decay products to particles 1-4, but there are still a number of unanswered questions regarding the process. However, it is clear that for most real mine atmospheres, the vast majority of the activity is attached to particles. The size distributions for the activity-bearing airborne particles have been studied 5,6, and it has been found that most of the activity resides on particles with diameters in the range of 0.05 µm to 0.3 µm with an average mass median diameter between 0.1 and 0.2 µm. The behavior of the unattached radon daughter species has also been recently studied[ 7], and many of the previous problems regarding the value of the diffusion coefficient for Po-218 have been resolved. A major problem in the understanding of the airborne transport of radioactivity in mines is the lack of detailed knowledge of mass tranfer to and fluid flow over rough walls under fully developed turbulent flow conditions. This paper will report the progress on a project that is designed to obtained that information. MATHEMATICAL MODEL DEVELOPMENT Deposition of particles on smooth surfaces in turbulent flow has been extensively studied. A comprehensive review of these results has been prepared by Sehmel 8. There has not been such a comprehensive study of particle deposition on rough walls under such flow conditions. In recent years, only a single model has been proposed to explain such deposition 9,10 and in both of these papers the flow structure in the rough walled pipe was not taken fully into account. As part of the work being conducted on this project, a more complete model was outlined in a previous report [11]. The basic theory will be reviewed to provide a context for the flow measurements to be reported. The flux of particle deposited on the walls of a pipe in a turbulent flow is derived from the one dimensional form of Fick's law as given by [N = Dpdpp/dr (1) where N is the flux of particles deposited per unit area per unit time, D is the total eddy diffusivity of the particles, p is the airborne concentration of particles, and pr is the distance measured from the center of the pipe. The rate of deposition is best expressed by a deposition velocity Vp = NIP pb (2) where P b is the mean particle concentration in the sulk flow. The shear radius, V/ut and the shear velocity, u , are used to calculate a nondimensional distance, and velocity, respectively, where v is the kinematic viscosity of the fluid. In order to make this calculation, it is necessary to have accurate descriptions for the particle eddy diffusivity, stopping distance, and shear velocity in order to insure that the influence of the flow structure has been properly accounted for. "Overburden strata deformation monitoring is one of the key problems in ground control. Using geophysical method through surface drilling to detect strata deformation is commonly used in the industry. In this paper, a geophysical method based on the distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) system were conducted in the laboratory, where a DOFS-based strata deformation monitoring experiment was performed with three physical models. The results show that the DOFS method precisely detects the rock mass deformation and strata structure forming with the Brillouin frequency shifts (BFS) representation. The BFS curves are divided into three phases, which reflects the horizontal three zones developed in the overburden. The BFS distribution presents a multiple stages form, the 1st stage corresponds to the caving zone and the 2nd stage corresponds to the fracture zone. Based on the multiple stages form, the evolution of the water flowing through fractured zone have been determined and the controlling effect of key strata over the water flowing fracture has been pointed out. In the end, the comparison validation proves the accuracy and reliability of this method, and it could be a new approach for the ground control research. INTRODUCTION Overburden rock strata above the work face space will propagate from slight deformation, part destruction to violent movement because of the underground coal mining. It is fundamental and an intrinsic requirement of ground control to monitor the mining-induced rock mass deformation.[1] Overburden strata have their significant mechanical behaviors and movement under damage deformation and fracture. Overburden strata deformation affect the mining ground pressure control directly, and performance in the relationship of supporting equipment and the surrounding rock, the mining-induced fracture distribution and the loss of underground water resource, the ground surface structure stability and the ecological environment.[2] From the perspective of the concept of safe and efficient scientific coal mining: the overburden strata deformation is an important part of mining method selection and reasonable supporting solutions decision which can solve the issues like the roof supporting force calculation, overburden fracture distribution and gas drainage, ground subsidence, separation of coal and rock control and top-coal recovery rate and so on. From the perspective of green and ecological mining: the overburden strata deformation is the key basis of studying the mining-induced ground subsidence and mining area ecological damage, and such engineering problem like environmental protection in mining area, ecological restoration in mining subsided land and the water conservation in fragile ecology area of mining could be solved based on it.[3-6] Therefore, the mining-induced overburden strata deformation is the key of ground control and needs to be controlled artificially."

The planning of experiments and the importance of statistical interpretation of the results have been recognized for years by scientists and engineers. The Factorial Design of experiments is among the various methods used for this purpose and is being widely applied in all branches of research and production. The basic principles of this tool have been described in detail (1, 2, 3, 4) and several examples of its application in various fields have been published (5). In recent years the mineral industry has also used Factorial Design to improve the efficiency of research, testwork and plant operation (6, 7, 8, 9). This method permits for a qualitative determination of the influence of the variables studied in a process and also a qualitative measure of the interaction of the variables. By graphic means or derivative methods, one may also establish the optimum conditions of the process (ibid 7, 8, 9). It is desirable, however, to develop mathematical methods to evaluate quantitatively these effects and restrict the optimization to the practical limitations of the variables. It is also convenient to adopt a notation system to generalize the Factorial Design.

The important role that mineral aggregates assume today in the construction and chemical industries is best attested to by the astronomical tonnage figures for the annual production of aggregates in the United States as reported by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in their "Minerals Yearbook." For 1965, latest publication available, the tabulation shows a total of 1,716,000,000 tons made up of 30,000,000 slag, 908,000,000 sand and gravel, and 778,000,000 crushed stone. A much more favorable statistical position for slag can be established by listing the world-wide tonnage. According to Dr. A, W. Lee, Director, British Slag Federation, in a paper presented before the 8th Annual conference of the British Institute of Works and Highway Superintendents, he estimates that the probable world consumption of slag is in the order of 100,000,000 tons showing--Great Britain with 10,000,000 tons, Germany, 15,000,000 tons, France, 1$000,000 tons and the United States with 30,000,000 tons. Thus it is seen that the United States accounts for almost one-third of the world's consumption of slag and the 3 west European powers another third.
