Most of the mineral deposits found in North-East India remain unexploited due to inadequate knowledge on their status, economic viability, and requisite mining technologies. The aimof this study is to characterize the multimetallic magnetite mineral deposit from the Nagaland area in India. The quality of iron ore was evaluated to establish its suitability as a raw material for iron production. Detailed studies were conducted to establish the composition and properties of the samples. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA), and petrographic microscopy techniques were employed in the investigation. Shatter and tumbler test was performed for analyzing the mechanical properties of the ore. XRD studies indicated that magnetite is the major mineral with low amounts of martite, maghemite, and quartz. XRF/EPMA results indicated that magnetite contains 35–65 wt.% of iron and 1–5 wt.% of chromium. It also confirms the presence of Ni and Al up to 1 wt.% and Si up to 6 wt.%. Chromite-rich ore contains up to 30 wt.% Cr and 15–20 wt.% of Fe.

This paper describes conditions which have caused specific bursts, present capabilities of detecting stress buildup and bursts, control methods, and a suggested approach to analyzing any individual mine-burst problem.

"Lead ions (lead nitrate) were introduced to modify the surface properties of scheelite, effectively and selectively improving the flotability of scheelite, with benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) serving as the collector. A series of experiments about the mode of addition and the ratio of lead ion to BHA were conducted and indicated Pb-BHA complexes were the active species responsible for the flotation. And two adsorption models of BHA on the surface of scheelite were established. For both the two adding methods, some kind of complexes formed by lead ions and BHA played a key role in the flotation process. Zeta potential, FTIR, and XPS studies indicated that the adsorption amount and intensity of BHA on the surface of scheetlie were larger by adding the reagents as a mixture. The mixed addition is conducive to form Pb-BHA complexes and improve the adsorption efficiency of BHA on the surface of scheelite, as well as the recovery of scheelite. INTRODUCTION Scheelite, as an important tungsten-bearing mineral, is nowadays utilized mainly by flotation (YIN and WANG, 2014; Sun et al., 2011; Gao et al., 2015; Gao et al., 2015). Flotation separation of scheelite from calcium minerals creates difficulties because of the existence of the same cation in the minerals and similar physico-chemical characteristics such as solubility, hardness, specific gravity, point of zero charge (PZC), etc. (Arnold and Warren, 1974; Deng et al., 2016; Deng et al., 2015; Ozcan and Bulutcu, 1993a; Yongxin and Changgen, 1983). The conventional collectors used in the flotation of scheelite ores are generally fatty acids or fatty acid derivatives (Bo et al., 2015; Oliveira and Sampaio, 1988; Shi et al., 2014; Sivamohan, 1988; Yongxin and Changgen, 1983). It is difficult to separate scheelite, especially from calcite, with these reagents because the adsorption mechanism of these collectors occurs through chemisorption of the oleate ion onto the mineral surface (Atademir et al., 1979; Changgen and Yongxin, 1983; Hiçyìlmaz et al., 1993; Hu et al., 2011). Therefore, it is almost impossible to separate them by fatty acid flotation without using any selective depressant. Although oleoyl sarcosine was used as a selective collector in the flotation of fluorite and siliceous scheelite ores (Ozcan and Bulutcu, 1993b; Ozcan et al., 1994), this selectivity is inadequate for a low-grade calcitic scheelite ore. Unfortunately, reagents such as organic colloids (dextrine, starch), quebracho, sodium phosphates, sodium silicate solutions containing polyvalent cations (hydrosols), etc. (Bo et al., 2015; Schubert et al., 1990; Shi et al., 2014; Yongxin and Changgen, 1983), used for calcite depression also depress scheelite to a large extent. Cationic collectors, such as amine and quarternary ammonium (Yang et al., 2015) and collector mixture (Gao et al., 2015) have been used to improve the scheelite flotation. However they have not been applied in industry due to the poor separation from silicate minerals."

The authors have previously described a method of enhancing the magnetic susceptibility of pyrite by a mild alkaline oxidative pressure leach (Hall et al, 1985). This finding was successfully applied to enhance the magnetic desulfurization of an Eastern Canadian coal (Hall and Finch, 1984). This paper reports on enhancement of the magnetic susceptibilities of iron-containing sulfides (arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite and marcasite) upon similar treatment. It also explores the application of this pretreatment in the magnetic separation of fine sulfides from oxides and other sulfide minerals. In the latter case galvanic interference effects have a serious impact on the potential use of this method.

Bulkspray cooling has been economically applied in cooling the hot environment of South African gold mines for the past two decades. Its success in that country led to its introduction at Gulf Mineral Resources Co.'s Mt. Taylor Mine in 1981 when increased drifting imposed additional cooling requirements. The bulkspray cooler developed and used at Mt. Taylor has a heat transfer capability of about 500 to 1500 kW. It is compact and portable, designed to be moved as required to maintain working temperatures in the advancing drift faces.

The IOC Mining and Operations Departments expressed an interest in reducing the amount of oversize material (>1.0 m x 1.0 m x 1.0 m; 39 inches x 39 inches x 39 inches) being produced and its subsequent downstream effects including in-pit sorting and reduction, damage to mobile equipment, and significant delays in the loading pockets and the primary crushers. To achieve this goal an oversize reduction project was undertaken by the mine and to date has significantly improved upon baseline measures. One key approach used to reduce the amount of oversize was the implementation of thicker emulsion. The introduction of a thicker emulsion provided more resistance to the forces created by dynamic water and reduces the infiltration of the emulsion into the cracks and fissures of the rockmass. Reduced amounts of oversize and more consistent fragmentation throughout the muckpiles has been a result. Additionally, a significant reduction in nitrates leached into the mine water discharge has been realized. To determine the effectiveness of the oversize reduction project, IOC used a of first-of-kind technology to assess fragmentation presented to the shovel at the digging face. A Digital Vision System (DVS) was installed on one of the shovels to capture images that were stamped with GPS locations. A large population of digital images were analysed to produce a robust fragmentation distribution baseline that was used as one of the mine key performance indicators (KPI). Changes to blasting practice were subsequently measured against the baseline KPI to assess effectiveness.

"Bastnaesite is one of the important mineral resources for the production of rare earth materials, and it is typically associated with calcite and quartz as gangue minerals. Fatty acid or hydroxamic acid are recommended collectors for bastnaesite flotation. In this research, potassium lauryl phosphate was expected to provide a stronger flotation response for bastnaesite than for the calcite and quartz gangue minerals. Using potassium lauryl phosphate as collector, the results of captive bubble contact angle measurements, zeta potential determinations and microflotation experiments for bastnaesite, calcite and quartz are reported. Greater selectivity for bastnaesite was achieved using potassium lauryl phosphate than using octyl hydroxamate as collector. These results indicate that potassium lauryl phosphate might be a promising collector in the flotation of bastnaesite ores. The computation results of universal force field (UFF) interaction energies for the mineral-reagent interactions are also reported and were found to correlate well with the experimental microflotation results.IntroductionBastnaesite ((Ce,La)FCO3) belongs to the mineral class of semisoluble salt minerals, whose characteristics include ionic bonding and limited solubility in water. Bastnaesite, for the most part, contains the cerium subgroup or the lighter rare earth elements (Zhou et al., 2014). The Mountain Pass deposit in California in the United States and the Bayan Obo deposit in Mongolia in China are the two major deposits of bastnaesite (Azizi et al., 2016; Satur et al., 2016). Calcite and/ or quartz are common gangue minerals in these and many other rare earth deposits (Jordens et al., 2014)"

The treatment of concentrates for the recovery of the precious metals imposes many processing and environmental challenges. Hydrometallurgical technology for recovery of values from refractory precious metal materials has been developed at Sunshine Mining and Refining Company. Historically, conventional pyrometallurgical methods have been used for to recover values from refractory precious metal materials. However, enhanced environmental awareness has worked to constrain typical refractory material processing methods. This hinders and limits the ability of established smelting or roasting technologies to fill the needs of new sources of refractory materials. An alternative is to treat refractory precious metal bearing materials by hydro metallurgical techniques. These methods are considered more environmentally appropriate since they do not produce gaseous pollutants like sulfur dioxide. Industrially, Sunshine Mining and Refining Company employs hydrometallurgical technology to process refractory precious metal materials. The Sunshine antimony leach uses a mixture of sulfur and caustic under ambient pressure and boiling conditions. The Sunshine oxidation leach uses a mixture of sulfuric acid and a minimal amount of sodium nitrite under relatively mild oxygen pressure and temperature conditions. These conditions result in a nitrogen species catalyzed sulfuric acid pressure leach. Since hydrometallurgical technologies provide industrially proven processing options for many types of refractory precious metal containing materials, their usage should be considered. Ample work has been conducted to prove the effectiveness of Sunshine refractory processing technologies on various materials. This has included platinum group metal materials, refractory gold concentrates, silver materials and indium materials. In some cases, complete process flowsheets have been designed to recover both base and precious metals from these materials and to treat the generated waste streams in environmentally sound manners.

Introduction With the increasing need to mine lower grade ores, high energy-related costs in comminution are of major concern. Very fine grinding is needed to liberate the fine mineral particles in these ores. Not only is this expensive, but it leads to greater losses in slimes. Gravity concentration techniques become unacceptably inefficient for particle treatment below 25 to 50 µm, and even flotation fails in the ultra-fine range. Ore from the South Crofty mine near Redruth, Cornwall, was subjected to thermal pretreatment in the hope that differential thermal expansion of the minerals would lead to intergranular cracking, and thus enhanced liberation. South Crofty ore contains about 1% tin as cassiterite associated with a complex assemblage of quartz, chlorite, tourmaline, and hema¬tite in granite and slate. Recovery of cassiterite can be as low as 70%, as overgrinding occurs during stage reduction of the material to 1 mm (primary grinding) and 180 µm (regrinding). Cassiterite is present in grain sizes ranging from submicroscopic to + 10 mm, the bulk being predominantly in the range of 50 µm to 3 mm. Experimental Flat polished sections of the ore were photographed in reflected light using a Vickers M17 microscope. The sections were then heated in a Carbolite LMF4 muffle furnace. The heating rate and temperature were monitored by a thermocouple immersed in the bed of particles. Previous work by Sherring (1981) on the same material showed that a 55% reduction in grinding resistance occurred when the material was rapidly heated and cooled through the quartz inversion tem¬perature (573°C), where a volumetric expansion of 0.86% occurs. The samples were therefore heated to 650°C at 26°/min, and were then water-quenched to room temperature. The effect of heat treatment on the mineralogy and fracture network was assessed by examining the same area after treatment. Results Most of the sections examined showed that extensive transgranular cracking occurred as a result of heat treatment. Such cracking, although weakening the rock and hence reducing the work index, would in no way enhance the liberation of the cassiterite from the host minerals. Intergranular cracking, which would lead to enhanced liberation, was difficult to discern under reflected light, but there was evidence of such cracking in some of the sections examined. Figures 1 and 2 are examples of typical sections before and after heat treatment. Figures la and lb - show cassiterite in hematite, Fig. lb, in normal incident illumination, illustrating clearly that after heat treatment, transgranular fracture is evident in the cassiterite. If any intergranular cracking has occurred, it is not evident in this photograph. Figures 2a and 2b show cassiterite in quartz before and after treatment. Fracturing in both minerals after treatment can clearly be seen, and there is evidence of intergranular fracturing. However, protruding "arms" of cassiterite are severed by transgranular fracture. Subgrains of quartz have also been isolated by trans¬granular fracture. There is major transgranular cracking across the wider sections of cassiterite. Discussion The effect of rapidly heating South Crofty tin ore to 650°C, followed by water-quenching to room temperature, has been studied by observing the fracture networks in mineral grains. The choice of 650°C as the heating temperature was influenced by the work of Sherring (1981), who found considerable reduction in grinding resistance after thermal pretreatment of the same ore. Scheding et al. (1981), however, have shown, by means of a crude calculation, that heat treatment cannot be justified solely on the basis of reduced grinding costs. The cost of heat treatment far out-weighs that of grinding, resulting in the combined costs for heat treatment being over six times that for grinding unheated material. The most economically attractive aspect of heat treatment is the possibility of enhanced liberation of the valuable mineral due to increased intergranular rather than transgranular fracture. Grinding costs would be greatly reduced by improved liberation at coarser sizes, and the costs of ancillary processes, such as dewatering and tailings disposal, would be reduced. The most significant economic effect, however, would be in improved metallurgical efficiency. Improved liberation would increase concentrate grades, and recoveries would be higher, particularly in the case of ores where high slime losses are produced due to the excessively fine grinding required to produce adequate liberation. Manser (1983) has shown that only a 1% increase in tin recovery, at the same concentrate grade, would be sufficient to offset heat treatment costs on South Crofty ore. Heavy liquid analysis and shaking table separation have been used to evaluate the effect of thermal treatment on processing (Binns, 1984; Scheding, 1981; Sherring, 1981). However, treatment of unheated and heated samples of South Crofty ore, ground to the same product size, by such methods have shown little evidence of improved metallurgical efficiency after thermal pretreatment. The large amount of transgranular fracturing revealed by reflected light studies helps to explain this lack of improvement. When an open pit mine is deepened, more and more waste rock must normally be removed. Techniques for optimization of open pit design are well-established within the mining industry. The recommended method is to choose the open pit alternative with the highest net present capital value of open pit and future underground mining. When the open pit is mined out, the operation must be closed, or, if it is profitable, mining must start underground. When planning an underground operation we experience the same type of optimization problem that occurs when determining the optimal depth for open pit mining. When mining underground the ore body is often divided into a number of areas, blocks or slices, each containing a transportation system with trains, trucks, conveyors, etc. When all the ore within such a part of the deposit is extracted, the operation must be closed, or, if it is profitable, a new transportation must be developed. The question that now arises is: how large a pan of a deposit shall be included in the first development and how much shall be left for future consideration?

Personnel at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are studying the technology and applications of salt-gradient solar ponds (see below) for both electrical and thermal energy generation. The brine extraction and processing site operated by the Kerr-McGee Corporation at Searles Lake, California, offers ideal conditions for economic construction of solar ponds. Furthermore, since rising conventional energy costs adversely affect the economic recovery of brine by the present process, this site was selected for a study on the feasibility of integrating the solution mining of trona (Na2CO3?NaHCO3?2H20) in the lower salt with solar ponds for heating. The major emphasis of this study was to determine whether inexpensive thermal energy available at the brine extraction site would be useful in extracting increased mineral value from the resource. The present operation, which involves the simple extraction of the complex brine and its processing at the adjacent plant, is sometimes referred to as solution mining. Since the concept discussed in this paper involves injecting a heated sodium sulfate brine to dissolve carbonate underground, the proposed scheme is referred to as "enhanced" solution mining. Utilization of belt air in underground coal mines has been discussed extensively during the last decade. The Final Report of the Technical Study Panel on the Utilization of Belt Air and the Composition and Fire Retardant Properties of Belt Materials in Underground Coal Mining formed by the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act of 2006 recommends research on leakage, use of booster fans, and escapeway safety. This paper discusses the role of ventilation modeling in evaluating primary escapeway pressurization in a three-entry development system to improve emergency escape in a coal mine using belt air. The intake entry of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Bruceton Experimental Mine was pressurized using a 1.1-m (42-in.) diameter, 37 kW (50 hp) fan. The work details air movement in the simulated three-entry system and the resulting leakage patterns. Three mine ventilation software packages were compared to analyze their performance in predicting the airflows and leakage conditions with different fan settings. NIOSH researchers found that the measurement results correlated well with the results of modeling.

Pyrite is one of the most common sulfide minerals on earth, which is usually grown with chalcopyrite and other sulfide minerals. In flotation practice, pyrite from different mines or different sections in a same mine may have different flotation behaviors. This is because the pyrite crystal contains lattice defect, including ionic vacancy and lattice impurity. The present work investigates the effects of three typical 3d transition metal (Co, Ni, and Fe) on the adsorption of CH3OCS2 −, OH−, and CN− on pyrite surface by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Calculated results show that Co impurity reduces the adsorption energies of CH3OCS2 − and CN− on the surface of pyrite, while Ni and Cu impurities significantly increase the adsorption energies of CH3OCS2 − and CN− on the surface of pyrite. Co impurity has small influence on the adsorption of OH−, but Ni and Cu impurities significantly increase the adsorption energies. Calculations on Mulliken charge population of Co2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ indicate that the Mulliken charges of Co2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ after OH− adsorption are more than those after CN− adsorption. This suggests that the ionic property of the M-OH- coordination bond is greater than that of M-CN- coordination bond, while covalent bonding of M-CN- coordination bond is greater than that of M-OH- coordination bond. The adsorption results are discussed based on coordination field theory (CFT).

Low levels of thallium were detected in the mine water drainages, and process water discharges of western mining and smelting operations. This required remediation under state regulatory standards, which allow discharges of no more than .0017 ppm thallium in mine water discharges. Influent streams containing thallium can be mitigated to state discharge standards after a single pass through the series of fluidized upflow columns. Test work to determine the optimal flow rates used pilot scale systems at two separate locations treating 5 - 25 gpm of effluent. The test system at the gold mine mimics the full-scale system, which will be based on the existing upflow carbon tanks that have been converted to zeolite columns. The system installed at ASARCO's East Helena smelter has a far more complex influent stream with a high loading of competing cations. Nevertheless the columns filled with CABSORB® are successfully mitigating the thallium contamination. CABSORB® ZS500RW is a product based on the sodium analog of the zeolite mineral chabazite named herschelite.

The decision to accelerate development of Stillwater Mining’s East Boulder Mine was made in March of 1998. It required the completion of conceptual designs by July of 1998. This was accomplished through teamwork and close cooperation of mine personnel, engineering firms and vendors, all working toward the common goal of developing an efficient and workable design. Early in the project, representatives of Stillwater Mining, Kilborn International, Parsons Brinckerhoff Transit and RailSystems, Continental Conveyor, and H.A. Simons met to develop methods to bring the mine into production at a highly accelerated rate and to solve potential bottlenecks, including the movement of personnel, materials, and muck through a 5.6 km(3-1/2 mile) adit. This interaction, including companies not normally associated with the mining industry, led to innovative approaches and designs produced by Kilborn Engineering and Stillwater Mining.

In 1992, 48 million tons of fly ash (not including bottom ash, boiler slag and FGD material) was produced in the United States, according to the American Coal Ash Association. Of this amount, 27.2% was utilized; although the percentage of fly ash utilized increased from 20% in 1980, there is significant potential to increase utilization. One of the primary driving forces behind increased utilization is increased disposal costs due to more stringent environmental controls and regulation. Fly ash is classified as a natural pozzolan and finds significant use as a cement additive. It has been found to increase the plasticity of the cement mixture while lowering the amount of mix water needed. In addition to improving leveling and finishing properties, fly ash improves pumpability as well as decreases the heat of hydration of the concrete mix which is particularly important in massive concrete structures such as dams where the concrete needs to cool as quickly as possible. The Loss on Ignition (LOI) of fly ash is an important quality when considering utilization. The LOI is primarily due to the presence of unburned carbon and the standard specifications for the use of fly ash as a mineral admixture in Portland cement concrete are given in ASTM C618-89a. which sets an LOI limit of 6%. However, many states have set a more stringent limit of 3%. The primary reason for the lower LOI specification is that carbon adsorbs air entraining agents which limits freeze-thaw resistance. This is particularly important in climates such as the midwestern US where multiple cycles of freezing and thawing are typical in winter.

Borates have been mined in the desert areas of California and Nevada for more than 100 years. To about 1890, playa surface mining provided the chief sources of boron minerals. Underground mining of colemanite and later of borax and kernite was predominate until about twenty years ago. Open pit mining of the large deposits of borax and kernite near Boron, California has been most significant for the past twenty years. Mining of colemanite in the Ryan, California area, near Death Valley, began in 1907. Following the discovery of the large deposits in the Boron area (about 1957), mining in the Death Valley area became nearly nonexistent. Only small tonnages were mined for special uses. Little mining was done in the Boraxo area near Ryan. The first claim was made in about 1915 In 1960 the area became the property of the Kern County Land Company, which was acquired by Tenneco Oil Company in 1967. In 1976 the various borate properties and claims in this region were acquired by American Borate Corporation. The open pit mine is now approximately 400 feet (121.9 m) deep, 3000 feet (914.4 m) long and 1000 feet (304.8 m) wide. The borates in the Boraxo pit consist primarily of three minerals. These are about 50% coiemanite (C2B6O11' 5H2O), about 40% probertite (NaCaB5O9.5H2O), and 10% ulexite (NaCaBcO9.8H2O). The colemanite, along with boric acid and high-grade coiemanite ore from Turkey provide the only sodium-free borates for production of textile grade fiberglas. When heated to its decomposition temperature, colemanite decrepitates to a fine powder. This provides the basis for the concentration process. The gangue minerals in this deposit are primarily calcite and clays, including bentonite. The ore body has a very low arsenic content.which is a desirable feature. Test work had been done with samples prior to the results discussed herein. This paper will discuss results of test work which were the basis for erection of a plant, and the subsequent plant operations.

Linear cutting tests of a porous sandstone with a radial drag pick show that saturation of rock with water can increase the specific energy of fragmentation. This appears to be due, in this case, to a saturation-induced increase in the forces acting on the cutting tool without a concomitant increase of the fragmented volume. The mechanisms of this reaction are explored by examining various responses of the parameters controlled and induced during the linear cutting tests, such as cut spacing, cutter penetration, three-dimensional forces and muck production. A program of load-indentation testing is underway to evaluate the permeability threshold of this behavior. These findings are opposite from those made when the same rock is cut with a constant cross-section disc cutter reported elsewhere (Abu Bakar and Gertsch, 2011). Such results highlight the effects of different cutting tool designs, and indicate the need for a well-coordinated program of research to support effective excavator design and selection.

C., The Department of Health, Education, and Welfare today announced proposed new regulations to reduce occupational health risks to workers in the U. S. mining industries by requiring the removal of all diesel powered equipment from American mines by December 31st "While we do not have complete and conclusive information to quantify these health risks we feel it is prudent to undertake this restriction on the use of diesel powered equipment without waiting for the completion of studies that are currently underway to identify and quantify these health risks," said a Department spokesman. HEW has been concerned about the health risks of diesel emissions in the underground coal mines for some time and have investigations underway designed to conclusively demonstrate the nature and magnitude of any health risks. However, HEW has decided to proceed with these regulations without waiting for the final results of these investigations. Further, HEW feels there is sufficient probability that diesel health risks do exist in all mining applications and consequently, the proposed regulations will apply to all surface and underground mining operations. It goes on a little further and indicates that due to the necessity of finalizing these regulations without delay, a period of fifteen days has been provided to receive comments regarding these proposed regulations.
