"The two track road sector between Cisneros-Loboguerrero (having a length of 14 km and 11 short unidirectional tunnels) is a new highway still on construction located along the existing Highway Buga – Buenaventura (Colombia). Due to the steep topography, difficult geological/geotechnical conditions, the traditional portal construction approach was impossible to be implemented in eleven (11) of the twenty two (22) portals. In this specific project, the skewed portal approach was developed as the optimal and more effective solution. The construction time and costs of portals were reduced in 21 months and 75%, respectively. At the same time, the natural equilibrium of the slopes was maintained, thus, facilitating adequate safety factors along the useful life of the project. This document pretends to show a detailed design experience (and the construction of the entry portal of tunnel 11 (left)). INTRODUCTION The Cisneros-Loboguerrero project is a 14 km length dual lane highway, connecting productive zones with the Pacific Ocean along the current Bogota-Buenaventura highway as shown in Figure 1. The project is located at the northern side of the Dagua River Valley. The preliminary design suggested constructing portals under challenging topographical conditions, i.e., slope cuts having heights between 50 to 100 m (some having slopes > 100%) requiring complex developments and having very high risks.The entry portal of tunnel 11 (left) was the first portal successfully built by implementing the skewed portal approach. Later, this approach was used as a model for the construction of the other ten (10) portal having similar topographic and geotechnical conditions. The development of this new alternative provided a considerable reduction on the construction time of portals, thus relieving a critical path in this project."

The present study investigates the influence of ferrous iron (as FeSO4) and ferric iron (as Fe2 (SO4)3), and pyrite (FeS2) on the ability of bacterial leaching of a high-grade sulfide Zn–Pb ore. In this regard, shake flask experiments were carried out at 5% (w/v) pulp density of the ore sample (having 40.7% Zn and 12.4% Pb initial metal content) using a consortium of mesophilic iron and sulfur-oxidizing acidophiles. A concentration of 0.04 mol/L of ferric iron in the leaching media was found to be optimum for zinc extraction without affecting growth of the microorganisms. Under this concentration, the dissolution of Zn, Pb, Cd, and As was found to be 57%, 0.2%, 0.03%, and 9.9% in 25 days. Using ferrous iron in the media, 0.16 mol/L of Fe2+ was found to be the optimum concentration for efficient bacterial growth and metal dissolution (54.6% Zn, 0.08% Pb, 0.03% Cd, and 10.2% As) from the sample in 25 days. On the other hand, using pyrite as the source of energy for bacterial growth, an initial 12-day lag period was observed when compared to the effect of ferrous iron in the media. Under the optimum concentration (test with 0.24 mol/L iron in the form of pyrite), the dissolution of Zn, Pb, Cd, and As was found to be 39.8%, 0.1%, 0.03%, and 10% in 25 days. The surface chemistry analysis indicated formation of a sulfur layer over the particle surface that hindered reagent diffusion and affected metal recovery through bioleaching.

"The traditional approach to rail tunnel fire safety design is to follow NFPA 130, which assumes a major tunnel fire could occur and requires bi-directional emergency ventilation. There is no regard to the impact of ventilation on fire growth and smoke production. In Europe and other parts of the world, the need for tunnel ventilation systems to provide smoke management in the event of fire is being questioned. The European Commission’s Safety in Railway Tunnels TSI is based on a philosophy that improved running capability (preventing fires and other events stopping the train in the tunnel) and elevated fire performance of materials means the chances of a major fire in a tunnel is highly unlikely, with only small fires expected, and no tunnel ventilation required. This approach is reinforced by the International Tunneling Association which has recently published an Engineering Methodology for Performance Based Fire Safety Design on Underground Rail Systems, which includes a methodology that does not require assessment of tenability in tunnels, but requires a scenario based risk assessment to be undertaken to determine overall fire safety measures. Recent research by the University of Edinburgh has shown that forced airflow from a mechanical ventilation system may promote fire growth and increase smoke volumes much more than with natural ventilation. Whilst the concept of no mechanical ventilation (i.e. natural ventilation) is a new concept for some, for many rail tunnels it is worthy of serious further consideration. RAIL TUNNEL SMOKE MANAGEMENT AND STANDARDS Smoke management using mechanical bi-directional ventilation systems has been a central part of the fire safety design solution under NFPA 130 for rail tunnels since 1982. The current version of the standard, NFPA 130: 2014, states that mechanical ventilation should be fitted to rail tunnels of length greater than 305 meters and an engineering analysis should be undertaken for tunnels of length 61 to 305 meters to determine whether mechanical ventilation should be fitted. However, this approach is not necessarily reflected elsewhere in the world. In Europe in particular, mechanical ventilation systems for smoke control within rail tunnels have taken a much less central role within the standards framework."

The title of this session is "Wall Street Looks at the Mining Industry," and I am going to attempt to answer the question: Shouldn't Mining Stocks Sell at Higher Price Levels? Or, What Does Wall Street See When Looking at the Mining Industry? Well, it sees a capital intensive business, a technical industry, and a growing industry becoming more vertically integrated. But, at the same time, Wall Street sees a cyclical industry, a fragmented industry of erratic earnings, spotty public relations, a feast-or-famine business where the public usually does not differentiate between coal mining or metal mining, and does not appreciate either the risks or the rewards. As a result, mining stocks generally sell at relatively low price learnings ratios in comparison to other industrial groups. This PIE ratio, the current market price of the capital stock divided by annual earnings per share, is probably the most popular index of a stock's value. The average of the price/ earnings ratios of the 30 stocks comprising the Dow Jones Industrial Average is over 14. This diverse group of stocks is widely regarded as being a cross-section and representative of the industrial companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange. However, in comparison to 14, Asarco and Kennecott shares are currently available for about 8 times annual earnings. Even discounting earnings from South America, the stock of these two companies sells at only 10 times earnings. Of course, Peruvian politics is currently preventing Cerro shares from selling above 6 times earnings, and Chilean politics keeps Anaconda shares at a PIE multiple of 7. However, even in better times, these companies rarely sell above 10 times earnings. American Metal Climax and Newmont sell at only 11 times earnings as does Phelps Dodge and St. Joseph Lead. Fatigue is a relatively well-investigated topic in the surface transportation industry with a research focus on sleep deprivation and disruption. This paper examines fatigue in mining operations. While mine operators are using or currently introducing technology to monitor fatigue, there is little work that focuses on the operators’ experience of fatigue and the acceptance of fatigue-monitoring technology. Focus groups were conducted to investigate these topics. The results of this research suggest that current fatigue-monitoring systems lack validity, reliability and user acceptance. Overall, these results emphasize the importance of a socio-technical systems perspective to guide interventions aiming at improving miner health and safety.

Traditional finance theory recommends discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis as the tool to value mineral properties. Yet, the calculated values by this method are usually lower than the market value. Finance theory also advises us to develop an undeveloped project immediately if its net present value is positive. Most projects are, however, only developed when the economics are highly favorable. This paper uses insights from option-pricing theory to explain these divergences between market behavior and finance theory and presents simple modifications to discounted cash flow analyses that will lead them to produce correct valuation and development timing advice.

In terms of resources of amphibole asbestos only South Africa can be considered. There are only two asbestos producing fields, one in the Northern Cape Province producing only crocidolite and one in the Eastern Transvaal producing only amosite. The banded ironstone sequence in which amphibole asbestos occurs is discussed, and the genesis of the fibre is briefly reviewed. The properties and characteristics of amphibole asbestos are discussed and compared to those of chrysotile. Approximately 300,000 tonnes of amosite and crocidolite are produced annually. Crocidolite has a potential for a fivefold increase of production, which could be sustained beyond the year 2000. An estimate of the resources of the various producing fields in South Africa is made. Mining methods are reviewed and evaluation techniques discussed.

While the mood at the 2013 annual joint meeting between the Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America (127th Annual Meeting) and SME Pittsburgh Section (68th Annual Off-the-Record Meeting) in Canonsburg, PA was subdued following a rocky year in the coal industry, attendance was down only slightly, to 300, and overall, the meeting?s focus was optimistic about the future of coal. The conference began by addressing one of the central challenges of coal mining head-on with a keynote address on the status of safety in the mining industry. Noting that two more U.S. miners had died in 2013 than by the same date in 2012, the National Mining Association?s (NMA) Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Bruce Watzman made a plea for a new approach to safety. He described the NMA CORESafety initiative, a program that promotes proactive safety measures versus a compliance-driven model. CORESafety, described in more detail on pp. 29 of this issue, focuses on developing successful ways to change company cultures of safety and behavior. Other industries that have adopted this approach have seen dramatic drops in fatalities, including the Australian mining industry, which has seen its annual fatality rate drop to nearly zero even while the number of people employed in the industry has soared. The rest of the morning?s sessions explored what is arguably the industry?s biggest challenge right now ? maintaining the social license to operate.

The presence of appreciable quantity of clay mineral in Indian hematite ore needs an attrition technique using screw scrubber in the beneficiation circuit to remove the ultrafine clays and avoid downstream operational problems. Spectroscopic analysis revealed that iron ore samples obtained from the Barbil region of Odisha contain a high amount of silica and alumina in the form of clay minerals (e.g., kaolinite) contributed as a loss on ignition (LOI) in the iron-making process. Iron ore fines of below 10 mm size were subjected to a laboratory-scale screw scrubber, and the effectiveness of scrubbing as well as the pelletization of the scrubbed product was investigated. The screw scrubber in the beneficiation circuit helps to remove the clay minerals, causes an increase in iron values from 63.65% Fe(T) to 66.18%Fe(T), with improved physical (CCS of 325 kg/pellet) and metallurgical (RDI of 2.24%) pellet properties.

The design and construction of a Concentrator based on initial pilot plant work is rarely perfect. Palabora's plant was no exception although the basic objective to produce copper in a safely conservative manner was certainly achieved in a profitable manner. identification of the metallurgical and mechanical deficiencies of the plant through operating experience and a better concept of the minerology of the orebody enabled the development of a more efficient process both in terms of the metallurgical performance and cost effectiveness. To maintain and improve this level of efficiency, continuous inspection and revision of the plant metallurgy and engineering standards is required. In this presentation a few of the investigations and changes are described: 1.0 Alternative methods to restrict and eliminate the detrimental effect of critical size material on the performance of an autogenous mill. 2.0 An analysis of the environmental condi¬tions in Palabora's grinding circuit and the introduction of high chrome balls as grinding media. 3.0 The role of magnetite in the beneficiation process at Palabora. 1.0 Alternative methods to restrict and eliminate the detrimental effect of critical size material on the performance of an autogenous mill.

Iron transfer from the pregnant leach solution (PLS) to the electrolyte can have a major economic impact on solvent extraction (SX) operations. High iron transfer will lead to greater operational costs, due to increased reagent consumption through electrolyte bleed and make up, or increased power costs due to decreased electrowinning current efficiency. Bioleaching of low-grade copper sulfide ore from the Kennecott Utah Copper Mine was investigated in a large scale piloting program including SX and electrowinning. Plant data and lab test work conducted throughout the course of operation, show that the unique containing PLS high ferric iron with high pH can lead to lower Cu: Fe selectivity than is typically seen in traditional copper SX operations. The impact of high ferric iron on the plant operation, and methods to reduce iron transfer will be discussed. Special considerations need to be taken for plant operating conditions and selection of SX reagents (including both extractant and aromatic content of diluent) based on the feed PLS characteristics.

Introduction From a historical perspective, bentonite is the common rock term for various uses and applications. Its name originates from water-based muds near Fort Benton used for lubrication of wagon wheels during the 19th century migration to western territories (which are presently part of the United States) when the pioneers ran out of axle grease. From a clay mineralogy perspective, bentonite is composed primarily of montmorillonite, an expandable magnesium aluminum silicate clay mineral. When magnesium occupies an octahedral structural site that usually contains an aluminum atom, a negative charge is created. In order to neutralize negative charges, cations are drawn to the interlayer surfaces between clay mineral sheet structures. Modern applications for bentonite depend on the sodium or calcium cation populations and other characteristics of the clay mineral. When sodium is the dominant cation, the material is also called sodium bentonite, also known as swelling bentonite, western bentonite or Wyoming bentonite. When calcium or magnesium is the dominant cation, the material is called calcium bentonite, also known as nonswelling bentonite or southern bentonite. Swelling bentonite is recognized for its rapid hydration of interlayer sodium and subsequent dramatic expansion up to more than 20 times its original volume. Low shear can then disperse the hydrated sodium bentonite to form suspensions that increase viscosity and suspend solids. However, when shear is subsequently eliminated a sodium bentonite slurry gels. Characteristically, nonswelling calcium bentonite has relatively poor hydration properties and thus low expansion of the clay mineral. When subjected to low shear, calcium bentonite exhibits very little viscosity and poor suspension. Additionally, when shear is subsequently eliminated no more than minimal gelling takes place. The domestic and export markets related to both swelling and nonswelling bentonite are discussed below.

Rare earths were not mined in the United States in 2008. However, processing of intermediate rare-earth concentrates continued throughout the year at the Mountain Pass Mine in California. Consumption of refined rare-earth products increased. U.S. rare earth imports were primarily from China, with lesser amounts, in decreasing order, from France, Hong Kong, Japan, Austria and Russia. The United States imported 100 percent of its supply of yttrium metal and compounds primarily from China. United States In 2008, lanthanide concentrates were processed by Chevron Mining Inc. (previously Molycorp Inc.) at its mine site at Mountain Pass, CA. Chevron Mining sold its entire holdings in the rare earths mine to Molycorp Minerals LLC in September and operations continued at the site through-out 2008. Major uses for these mineral commodities were in automotive catalytic converters, petroleum fl uid-cracking catalysts, permanent magnets, glass-polishing compounds, ceramics, metal-alloying additives, phosphors and recharge-able batteries. Three domestic companies produced and sold lanthanide intermediate concentrates and refined products. Chevron Mining sold its interests in the Mountain Pass Mine to Molycorp Minerals LLC on Sept. 30, 2008. Molycorp Minerals LLC is an investment company owned by Resource Capital Fund IV L.P., Pegasus Partners IV, LP, The Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Traxys North America LLC, Carint Group LLC and Mark Smith. The Molycorp operation previously mined the rare earth fluocarbonate mineral bastnäsite by hard-rock surface methods, and the mine remained on care and maintenance in 2008. Molycorp maintained significant stocks of bastnäsite concentrates, intermediate concentrates and high-purity rare earth compounds at its operations at Mountain Pass. In October 2007, Chevron Minerals completed phase one of its three-stage plan and restarted the rare earth separation plant at Mountain Pass. The company also processed intermediate rare earth concentrates from existing stocks during the first three quarters of 2008. Molycorp Minerals LLC maintained production in the last quarter of the year. The mine at Mountain Pass has been closed since 1998. Future plans are to restart processing of stockpiled bastnäsite concentrates followed by reopening of the mine.

Large scale surface mining has a major impact on land use. Without reclamation, abandoned mining sites are usually less productive than before mining. With increasing and completetive land use demands in the United States, it becomes increasingly evident that multiple land use should be considered for all areas that will be mined, with special emphasis on coal, sand, gravel, and stone. The mining of these commodities affects the largest land areas and the latter two are commonly mined near population centers where high land-use pressures justify serious consideration of multiple use. Typically, sequential use will mean restoration of the mined land or at least transformation of the land into a useable state. Determination of land reclamation capability is a viable approach to planning reclamation of surface mined land. The natural resource base--geology, soil, and water--controls the type and intensity of land-use practices which can be sustained following mining. Evaluating physical limitations can eliminate consideration of uses which would severely impair the environment or which are impractical. This approach provides for an environmentally and economically sound land use at very little cost. In addition, it can save or make money for the mining company and landowner. Sand and gravel is an especially significant resource because it is mined throughout the entire country and commonly extracted near cities. Increasing urban growth and industrial activity require increased supplies of sand and gravel. This translates into expanded surface mining and an increase of disrupted land. Oftentimes this land is within an urban area and has potential for real estate or water-based activities. The Bureau of Mines investigated technologies for determining the integrity of in situ leach mining wells. A self-contained trailer-mounted well integrity testing system (WITS) was designed and built to enable rapid testing of well casings for leaks as required by environmental regulations. The WITS utilizes two inflatable packers to seal off the entire casing length or any portion thereof. Water pressure is built between the packers to the desired test pressure, and the presence or absence of casing leaks is determined by monitoring the pressure drop between the packers. A winch and steel cable are used to run the packers in and out of the well. The WITS underwent an industry field test at the Irigaray in situ uranium leaching mine near Buffalo, WY. A total of 37 wells with an average depth of 225 ft (69 m) were tested at an average rate of four wells per 8-h shift with a two-person operating crew. This represents a 75-pct time savings and an 83-pct labor savings compared to the rigid-pipe method previously used at the mine, with which a three-person crew tested an average of one well per shift.

New Mexico produced 83% of domestic potash and 27% of domestic consumption in 1992. The potash industry of New Mexico produces sylvite (KCI), langbeinite (K2SO4-2Mg(SO4)2), and artificial K2SO4. Average sylvite grade in New Mexico today is about 14%. The average grade of langbeinite is 8-10% Kp. Commercial potash occurs in the middle or McNutt Member of the Salado Formation (Upper Permian Ochoan Series). The 120-m-thick McNutt Member dips about 1° east and contains 11 of 12 potential ore zones in the Salado. The mineralogy and proportion of clay minerals, up to 7% of the ore, influence optimum milling procedures and ore grade cutoff.

Mitchell Point Tunnel near Hood River, Oregon is one of the more unique segments of the Historic Columbia River Highway and State Trail being constructed through the Columbia River Gorge. This 650-foot bike/pedestrian tunnel set to open in 2024 is being delivered by FHWA in partnership with Oregon DOT, Oregon State Parks, and the U.S. Forest Service. Primarily driven using drill & blast excavation methods through basalt, the shotcrete and dowel-supported tunnel features masonry portals and ve window adits that provide illumination and views of the river similar to the original highway tunnel of many vistas built in 1915 that was removed in 1966 to make way for Interstate 84. This paper summarizes the planning, design, and construction.

People are our most valuable resource. It is as true today as any point in mining history as we face unprecedented personnel shortages aggravated by a workforce that is aging, significant generational gaps and difficulties recruiting younger professionals all amidst increasing global mineral demand. The educational system has a similar, but slightly contrary problem. Many historically strong mining engineering programs have died. Now, fewer mining oriented universities are trying to produce more students in order to meet the demand. Moreover, their situation is aggravated by a similarly aging workforce, a general lack of mid-career PhD?s with the interest and field experience to teach effectively, an extremely slow hiring and funding process, and an inability to be competitive against private industry compensation packages. The traditional instructional model, while not necessarily broken, is most certainly dated, and can penalize programs and students where schools do not have in-house expertise in a given topic. Mining companies, like Rio Tinto, have the opportunity, if not necessarily the obligation, to positively influence how this model works. Educational Partnerships may be the key. This paper will address some observations, and possibilities, associated with Rio Tinto?s efforts in this area.

Chemical and physical properties of thiol collectors are reexamined to compare the prospects of heavy metal-thiolate or disulphide surface reaction products acting as actual collector species. Recent evidences for the existence and importance of each of these types of adsorbed species on sulphide minerals are also discussed. A conclusion is reached that partial coverage by chemisorbed heavy metal thiolate is often sufficient to confer practical levels of hydrophobicity and floatability. Only on a few highly conducting and "noble" sulphides does adsorbed disulphide-type collector oxidation product appear to be significant.
