This summary of international mineral exploration activities for 2012 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for 2012: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by SNL Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2012 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events including economic, social and political conditions that affected exploration activities, which were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists.

INTRODUCTION Our company has made persistent efforts to utilize the very latest cost-saving technology in tunnel design and construction. However, we were relatively late in joining the clan of slurry shield tunnelers. The challenge came in 1973, when our company was low bidder on a major sewer tunnel in Hamburg, West Germany. The tunnel was to be driven under the harbor region through coarse and fine sands with up to 60 ft hydrostatic head of water. Outer diameter was 15 ft, and length was 2.9 miles. This contract appeared right to enter the new field of slurry face tunneling. We gathered a design-engineering team to develop the machine, called it "Hydroshield", and used it on the project. The good performance of the prototype machine encouraged us to improve and modify the equipment design. The very latest model is now in use on a subway tunnel in Antwerp, Belgium. This tunnel is 21 ft outer diameter and 2.4 miles in total length. In terms of excavated volume it is the world's largest slurry shield contract. While the drive is still in full swing, we are currently preparing for 3 further Hydroshield applications, with diameters ranging from 12 to 32 ft. This paper describes the Hydroshield's salient design features, operational characteristics, construction reliability and performance levels, as experienced in West Germany and Belgium.

For the first time in many years, the Liebherr Group chose to host its annual conference for the international construction trade press in the United States. The reason for the move is simple ? mining. Like other large corporations, especially those in the construction fields, Liebherr felt the effects of the global economic crisis that began in 2008. The slowdown in the housing market was especially hard on Liebherr?s mobile crane and earth moving divisions. The mining division, however, while affected by crashing commodity prices that led to cancelled orders and the loss of financing for some customers, was not battered as badly as the other divisions. And now, with the price of commodities once again on the rise, it seems that it will be Liebherr?s largest machines that lead the family-owned company to better days. ?We can report that our generally optimistic view during the crisis has proved adequate,? said Joachim Janka, president of Liebherr mining equipment, at the conference in Williamsburg, VA, just down the road from the company?s mining truck division global headquarters in Newport News, VA. ?Since the third quarter of 2009, our mining equipment activities have been recording once more a strong and steady demand. This has already yielded a substantial increase in market shares for our product lines of large mining shovels as well as for mining trucks.?

It is commonly recognized that seismicity can be induced by rock failures or slip along geologic structures around mining excavations. The unpredictable nature of these events and their proximity to the working area may raise safety concerns in underground mining operations. Modeling can be a useful tool for estimating seismic potential for a given mine layout, but the challenge is to detect a seismic event and estimate its intensity in the model. One well-documented approach is to monitor the variation in the energy content of the model and record potentially damaging seismic events when there is a significant release of energy. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) employed this approach using 3DEC modeling software to simulate the anomalous seismic events that occurred in a deep longwall mine in Virginia in 2005. A four-panel model of the mine was constructed utilizing a 2D cross section at the location of the mining face at the time of the event. Seismic potentials associated with the development of each panel are evaluated by recording the seismic energy released during the simulation. The results demonstrate the occurrence of two relatively significant events during the mining of the last panel, which are consistent with the historical observations at the mine.

This is the sixth annual tabulation that gives mineral royalty information. This tabulation, like the previous editions, includes all of the earlier data plus more than 100 new entries. In addition to the royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. An article in the December 1984 Kentucky Coal Journal could have far reaching applications. It explains that a banking firm examined the "reserve risk" as one of six factors for analysis when financing a coal project. The firm concluded that coal reserves in Kentucky are worth an average of $0.29/t ($0.26 per st) in-place. The banking firm based this in-place value on its examination of more than 50 leases. In-place value is especially important when trying to establish a mineral value for a given deposit. Ernie Lehman wrote to this author after last year's column appeared and he quoted the lease rates for lead and zinc on federal land. He states, from first hand information, that the leases are based on a percentage of net smelter return as follows: 4% for the first five years, 4.5% for the next five years, and 5% thereafter. The figures used in last year's column ($ per st) came from dividing reported royalty income by reported production. The information reported last year merely translates the results of the net smelter return (as written in the lease) to royalty income per ton to the US Government for the various years. Statistics from the Minerals Management Service of the Federal Government show that oil and gas account for 40% and 53%, respectively, of the Federal royalty income. Coal accounts for about 4% and all other minerals, the remaining 3%. Oil and gas leases are mostly at 12.5%. Most of the coal leases are at 12.5% for surface mining operations and 8% for underground mining. Many of the other commodities are leased at 5%, which has been true for decades. Relative to Federal leases, this year's table shows some percentages and some costs per ton. This was done to give information about the leases and also to show income produced by various commodities. Note that some commodities have a variation in $/ton even though the royalty percent is the same. These variations result from a combination of factors that influence the value of a mineral commodity. The same caveats that have appeared in previous columns relative to factors that influence the value of reserves are restated. The data in the table serve as a general reference and are not intended to present an absolute scale of reserves costs. Several factors influence the value of any mineral commodity. The factors include: • location/transportation (especially significant for most industrial minerals); • market conditions both for the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine it; *quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing/beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; and • legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will significantly influence the cost of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity in column 1, and the subsequent columns give the location - either by state, US geographic area or Canadian province; the cost - R for royalty and P for purchased cost; and the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred. The last column offers either comments or gives a footnote number for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. The units may refer to cubic yards (/yd), cubic feet (/cu ft), tons (/T, 2000 lbs) or acres (/A). 1 cu yd = 0.7646 m3 1 cu ft = 0.2832 m3 1st=0.9078t 1 acre = 0.4047 hm or m2 In several cases, the royalty is a percentage of the sales price of the finished product and is levied against either the amount produced or the amount sold. In an increasingly environmentally conscious world, mining's importance to society has often been misunderstood and even maligned by the public. Extreme and impractical ideas have often been presented to children because of the lack of accurate, timely resource materials available to educators. In the late 1960s. two mining engineers, S.P. "Pi" Warren and C.L. "Lindy" Barker, became aware of this situation. They proposed to develop a summer field course to provide a factual overview of the minerals industry for teachers. The pair believed that teachers could become better informed to educate students, and future generations, about mining. These two Colorado Mining Association (CMA) members felt that such a course could reduce much of the misunderstanding about this vital industry. This could be done by providing a balanced perspective of mining, not only for kindergarten-through-grade-12 teachers, but also for the students they would be teaching during their careers. Students who better understood the minerals industry could better formulate an unbiased view of it. The course would seek recognized authorities from industry, academia and government who would lecture in their respective fields of expertise. The course would provide a total concept of the coal, aggregate, metals and industrial minerals industries. It would include geology, geophysics, exploration, mining, processing, marketing, product applications, economic, mining history, careers, and environmental responsiblity. When possible, site visits would permit educators to view operations and to meet the men and women who are industry leaders. Teachers would pay a small tuition fee. The balance of the program expenses for each teacher would be paid through scholarships provided by industry and individuals. The "total concept" idea obtained the support of the minerals industry. The support of CMA's Education Committee and the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) was obtained in 1968. Colorado's Commission on Higher Education approved teacher recertification credits through CSM's Office of Special Progams and Continuing Education for those successfully completing the program. The first six-week series of classes presenting the total concept of the indus¬try was held at CSM in 1969. In 1977, the CMA Education Foundation Inc. (CMAEF) was established as a Colorado nonprofit corporation. The "Total Concept of the Mining Industry" (Total Concept) course was placed under its sponsorship. CMAEF is dedicated toward this continuing education program (Table 1). In 1994, the course was streamlined to four-weeks for six hours recertification credit.

Underground construction is a matter of dealing with the inherent uncertainty of subsurface geology. If the encountered conditions are less favorable than the expected ones, the execution of excavation, support, ground treatment or lining works is likely to require more or different efforts than anticipated, thereby delaying the works and increasing the costs. The 2019 first edition of the FIDIC Emerald Book model contract (FEB) addresses many of the issues to which underground works give rise, including those related to differing site conditions (DSC). This paper examines how under the FEB disputes arising from or in connection with DSC could or should be avoided.

The demand placed on the mining industry in the past 15 years for increased production, coupled with lower grade ore and higher cost capital, has resulted in a noticeable increase in grinding mill sizes. The pressure to increase mill size continues. During the mid sixty's and early seventy's, ?larger? conventional ball mills were in the range of 13 - 16-1/2 f t. diameter (4 - 5 m) increasing by the mid 70's to 18 ft. (5.5 m) diameter. At the same time, autogenous mills expanded from 24 - 32 ft. (7.3 - 9.1 m) to the present 34 and 36 ft. (10.b and 11.0 m) diameters. These size pioneers of 16-1/2, 18, and 36 ft. diameter mills from Allis-Chalmers have been free from structural problems, because they were analyzed, modeled, designed, and field tested to meet the challenge.

The effects of percent solids, mill loading and grinding time on product size distribution and ball wear were studied in a laboratory ball mill for a taconite ore. Mild steel balls and HCLA steel balls were used to examine the role that ball hardness play in grinding. Net production of minus 325 mesh - material reached maximum at 70% solids, whereas the ball wear decreased as pulp density increased. HCLA steel balls ground the taconite ore finer than mild steel balls under otherwise identical conditions. Examination of ball surfaces with a scanning electron microscope suggested that grinding with mild steel balls involved nipping rather than attrition, whereas grinding with harder HCLA balls involved both nipping and attrition.

ABSTRACT This study analyzed the publicly available health and safety policies of 26 mining companies to determine the quantity of health and safety (H&S) practices that mining companies encourage in relation to the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle. A thematic content analysis of the policies identified elements and practices within the text. On average, companies communicated information on about 7 elements (range 1–14, standard deviation = 3.49) and discussed 15 practices (range 2–34, standard deviation = 9.13). The elements in which companies highlighted the most practices were risk management, emergency management, leadership development, and occupational health. A discussion of the policy trends shows areas that mine sites can improve upon within their Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, in addition to encouraging the use of both leading and lagging indicators to manage health and safety performance. INTRODUCTION Mining companies and their employees are expected to identify and manage risks at their worksites to ensure the health and safety (H&S) of everyone at the site. The primary mechanism in place to control these risks is a company’s health and safety management system (HSMS) (Boyle, 2012). Broadly, an HSMS is a set of standard, interrelated, and interacting elements used to promote and achieve occupational H&S goals (ANSI/AIHA Z-10, 2012; BS OHSAS 18001, 2007). The practices conveyed within an HSMS are expected to minimize incidents, injuries, illnesses, and even save worker lives (Alsop and LeCouteur, 1999; Arocena and Núñez, 2010). In the United States, both the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulate and encourage aspects of an HSMS (US Federal Register, 2011, 2010). Many HSMS documents (i.e., Chemical Industries Association, 1995; Health and Safety Executive [HSE], 1995; International Labour Office [ILO], 2001) attribute the source of their basic management system to Deming’s Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) model of continuous quality improvement and organize their practices within this cycle (Johnson, 2002). The PDCA cycle is a well-adopted approach in health and safety management and promotes continuous learning and adaptability (Robson et al., 2007)."

As 1979 drew to a close, it was obvious that China would have another good year with output of most industrial products at 3-9% above levels attained in 1978. Most increases were registered on the basis of maximum utilization of existing capacities and nationalization of procedures and methods. There were also distinct improvements in the quality and variety of products. Coal output probably surpassed the 650-Mt level in 1979. Steel output was expected to reach the 35-Mt level, an increase of nearly 10% over 1978. Based on the vast amount of housing and road and project construction, cement production more than likely surpassed 70 Mt. The nonferrous base metal industries improved somewhat in 1978, but actual output levels in recent years may have been a little higher than previously estimated by the outside world. Stagnate world demand slowed growth in the "export metals" sector. Minerals like magnesite and talc were produced at tonnages much larger than previously thought, with gold also falling into this category. Sulfur and pyrite production are still short, although a big pyrite mine was being brought into production. Barite out-put was reportedly up and fluorspar output held its own. Westerners generally concede that difficulties in transportation and power supply are holding back mineral production. Throughout 1979, basic construction continued on the majority of projects started by the Chinese and those few foreign projects contracted before the adjustment of industrial priorities. Foreign Ventures Perspective The foreign connection looms large in China's plan for modernization. In effect, it is an extension of what China wants to do in terms of "walking on two legs"-that is, develop what can be done locally to the fullest extent, then rely on international technology to move into the bigger and more complicated projects. Foreign projects are designed to complement domestic projects rather than replace them. Many foreign projects were started or continued by the Chinese in 1979. Building the necessary infrastructure for the projects is usually a Chinese endeavor and requires Chinese technicians and money. In areas with a strong economic base, this activity proceeds without foreign aid. In other areas, added funds are requested. Foreign funds can come in many forms-equipment technology, low interest loans, equity capital, advance-of-funds on the basis of future delivery in kind, and joint venture money. The Chinese are exploring all these avenues, with the strategy of minimizing foreign exchange needs for individual projects. They feel very uncomfortable with high interest rates, even though interest can be treated as operating ex¬pense rather than capital expense. Then there's the question of rights. The Rawah Ditch is a mountainous water supply diversion which supplies Larimer County, Colorado with water since 1903. The ditch includes two historic tunnels excavated by drill and blast through a gneissic rock buttress. Both rock tunnels were failing with annual convergence. After a snowshoe-accessed eld investigation, nite element modeling, and an alternatives analysis, a diameter DE pipe was inserted within each tunnel and the annulus lled. The proect was implemented in an Alternative Delivery contract lasting ve months from eld investigation through procurement and construction.

Yeelirrie lies toward the center of Western Australia, 650 km (404 miles) northeast of Perth (Fig. 1). The ore reserves have been estimated as 52.5 kt (57,871 tons) of contained U3O8, at an average grade of 0.15%, of which almost two-thirds average 0.24% U3O8. the ore body is a thin, elliptical, more or less horizontal sheet measuring approximately 9 km (5.6 miles) in length, between 0.5 and 1.5 km (0.3 and 0.9 miles) in width, and up to 7 m (23 ft) in thickness, extending from the surface to a depth of 8 m (26 ft). In spite of its near surface position, there is only one small outcrop of significant mineralization. Carnotite is the only uranium mineral recognized so far, dispersed through a calcrete horizon, and deposited from circulating ground water which was also responsible for the carbonation of the clays completely filling an Early Tertiary drainage system. Calcrete, as seen at Yeelirrie, is quite distinct from the widespread, thin pedogenic horizons, as it often forms bodies many kilometers in length and up to 20 m (65.6 ft) in thickness, elongated parallel to the drainage lines. It is variously referred to as "valley calcrete" or "ground water calcrete" to emphasize the occurrence and mode of origin. The discovery of Yeelirrie in mid-1971 was the successful culmination of a grass-roots exploration program initiated in 1968 as part of Western Mining Cop's program of diversification from its historical position as a major gold producer. The object was simply to find an economic uranium deposit - with no constaints other than those normally taken as applying in the mineral search. There was, therefore, complete freedom in the selection of the exploration model, or models, to be applied and the areas to be considered, though the choice was inevitably influenced by both the nature of world occurrences and the local geology. One of the options avail- able was the sandstone environment. Yeelirrie was the direct result of pursuing this line of investigation through three sequential, but quite distinct, stages: first, a regional study; second, establishing a case for exploring the inland drainage systems of Western Australia; and finally, an evaluation of the calcrete environment. An assessment of the potential for sandstone-type deposits in Australia necessitated going back to first principles, since there were no known precedents in this country for guiding exploration and, as a consequence, the search need not be influenced by established prejudices. Previous uranium exploration during the 1950s had been preoccupied with vein-type deposits, and, although the sandstone environment was undoubtedly being examined in 1968, no discoveries had been announced to that time. When considering the necessary ingredients -a source of leachable uranium, a circulating ground water system, and a suitable reducing environment - it could be argued that considerable areas in the eastern part of the continent were theoretically prospective, but basin depth and the extensive superficial cover of Mesozoic and Cainozoic sediments presented considerable practical difficulties.

This paper reviews a study conducted for Australian Coal Research Limited (ACARP) to assist Anglo-American operations with better understanding of coal burst mechanics and control based on U.S. practical experience, investigations, and inspections in three major U.S. coalfields over the past 45 years. The study examined both nonviolent and burst-prone case studies to identify contributing risk factors and addressed failure mechanisms for major U.S. coalfields in Utah, Colorado, and Kentucky, which have diverse characteristics. To investigate the mechanics of coal burst, a multipronged approach is used. First, field measurements in three mines from East Mountain, Utah, are complemented with finite-difference stress analyses to address the importance of horizontal stress in coal pillar mechanics of violent failure. Second, the computational procedures for estimating seismicity resulting from slip along geological discontinuities are reviewed, as these measurements point to seismicity being the trigger mechanism for violent failure of marginally stable structures. This joint-slip seismicity mechanism is in agreement with the more recentimproved re-examination of mining-induced seismicity (MIS) data from the Crandall Canyon Mine, Utah by University of Utah (UOU). Third, a hybrid statistical-analytical methodology is applied for identifying significant factors affecting coal burst. It utilizes data from 30 case studies including those from Utah, Colorado, Kentucky, and other eastern U.S. mines. The statistical approach reinforces field measurements and points to strata rigidity, joint spacings, and horizontal stress field as significant factors affecting damage resulting from coal bursts. This provides practical capabilities for identifying operations of higher risk using a rigidity-cavability variable. Overall, the study provides valuable insights into the mechanics and risk factors associated with coal bursts in major U.S. coalfields. By utilizing a multipronged approach that incorporates both field measurements and statistical-analytical calculations, the study offers practical capabilities for identifying operations of higher risk and improving coal burst control.

It is clear that precise overground and under-ground mapping is an important factor for all designers. Due to rapid changes in underground construction, tunnel designers are increasingly in need of updating project information. This article explains the latest techniques for detecting under-ground utilities as well as underground mapping. Global Positioning System (GPS) is a very ac-curate and popular navigation and mapping system that has been used extensively above ground, but is not used for underground mapping as signals are not strong enough to pass through ground or water. Most underground techniques were developed for military applications during the first and second world wars. Later, the techniques became public. For example, ground penetrating radar was developed for the military in 1970 to be used for locating tunnels under the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. Later, the same technique was used for detecting unexploded ordinance such as plastic land mines.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the former U.S. Bureau ofMines (USBM) have given a significant effort over the past four decades in researching and developing engineering controls and interventions to reduce mine workers’ dust exposures during the bagging and palletizing of industrial minerals. Workers performing manual bagging and palletizing of 50- to 100-pound bags typically have some of the highest dust exposures of all workers at mining and mineral processing operations. This paper will provide an overview of available dust control technologies for bagging operations and present the findings of a recent case study that was conducted at four different industrial sand operations to identify the current types of bagging and palletizing technologies being used and to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing workers’ exposures to respirable crystalline silica dust. An evaluation will also be performed to determine if further reductions in respirable dust levels can be achieved by incorporating additional modifications or improvements into the existing technology.

The Pinto Valley concentrator of BHP Copper Inc. restarted its sulfide mining operations in September 2007 to produce copper and molybdenum concentrates. During the plant production ramp up, the copper/molybdenum circuit quickly reached the copper grade and recovery targets, but the production and quality of the molybdenum concentrate continued to be a challenge. Even though several improvements in the molybdenum circuit were completed, the final molybdenum concentrate did not meet contractual specifications. After reviewing several options to improve grade and reduce contaminants, the installation of three flotation columns were chosen. The column design and construction were done using in-house craftsmen and engineers. Ten days after commissioning, the columns successfully reached a steady operation and began producing molybdenum concentrate to the required specifications, that is, high molybdenum tenors and low copper and iron content. The Pinto Valley operations, are comprised of the Pinto Valley concentrator, the Pinto Valley dump leaching and a solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) plant. The concentrator operated from 1972 to 1998 when mining and milling operations were curtailed for economic reasons. The SX/EW plant continued operations for copper cathode production. After a cessation of mining operations of almost 10 years, Pinto Valley operations began a restart project in January 2007, to bring the mine and the concentrator back into production. Copper concentrate production started in October 2007 after refurbishing and upgrading the facilities with a new DCS system and filter plant. The daily targets of the concentrator were to treat 56.7 kt (62,500 st) of ore, produce 762 t (840 st) of copper concentrate containing 27.5 percent copper at recoveries of 86 percent and produce 2.2 t (2.5 st) of molybdenum concentrate containing more than 80 percent MoS2.

INTRODUCTION Laboratory testing for magnetic concentration circuit design is a requirement, just as it is for most other types of concentration. Natural variations in raw materials allow on1 y the broadest of generalities to be made regarding magnetic separation. Further, magnetic fields are geometry dependent, leaving fundamental models of a separator overly dependent upon the exact conditions for which the models were derived. Despite this, an understanding of the basics of magnetic separation and of the problem to be attacked can result in rapid progress towards the final circuit design with a relatively simple testing program. Magnetic Separation Basic Principles A magnetic field can readily be understood in terms of lines of flux. A familiar demonstration of these lines of flux is the pattern of iron filings on a sheet of paper when a magnet is placed underneath. Lines of flux2 are measured in Gauss (1 line/cm2) or Tesla (10000 gauss). Regions of high field strength have a greater number of lines. Field direction is indicated by a convergence of lines. When a particle is placed in a magnetic field it cuts the lines of flux and alters them in one of three basic patterns. These patterns are referred to as diamagnetic, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic. Diamagnetic materials have electronic structures which react to oppose an applied magnetic field. This opposition acts to locally reduce the applied field slightly. Northwest Alloys, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alcoa, produces magnesium from dolomite by reduction with ferrosilicon and aluminum. This process produces alkaline by-products in quantities that allow their consideration for use as commercial by-products. Two such products are dicalcium silicate slag, Di-Cal, and magnesium oxide condensate, MgO. The alkaline properties of these materials offer acid neutralizing capability comparable to the traditionally used lime, therefore, warranting a study for their use in applications where the neutralization of acidic waters or process solutions is required, such as treatment of mine waters. In this ongoing study, three mine waters (Bunker HillMine, Berkeley Pit, and Blackbird Mine) were selected for treatment with Di-Cal and MgO. Lime was used as the background control. The solid precipitates were subsequently contacted with pure water at four different pH conditions for stability testing of prepared metal precipitates (expanded TCLP). It was found that neutralization with Di-Cal results in precipitates which are of equivalent to superior stability than those from lime treatment.

"Native antimony metal is rare and antimony generally occurs together with gold, lead, copper and silver. There are more than 100 antimony minerals, although the sulfide mineral stibnite is the main economic mineral.Antimony enters the supply chain either as a result of mining (primary production) or recycling (secondary production). China has by far the largest antimony resources and is, as a result, the world’s center for antimony mine production. While China remains the leading primary producer, accounting for 69 percent (80.5 kt or 88,700 st) of the global 117.5 kt (129,000 st) in 2017, market consolidation and regulatory inspections across China leading to closures of facilities have caused a significant decrease in Chinese output from 115.8 kt (127,600 st) in 2015 (81 percent of global production).Tajikistan and Russia are the next largest producers of antimony after China, both ramping up production in recent years. Russia could significantly increase its supply of antimony if Polyus moves ahead with supplying 10-12 kt/a (11,000–13,200 stpy) of contained antimony from gold tailings. Australia and Bolivia are also significant mine producers outside China. The value of the different ores varies based on the metal content of the concentrates, with the most valuable gold-bearing ores sourced from Australia’s Costerfield Mine and the least valuable mercury-bearing ores sourced from the Anzob Mine in Tajikistan. On average, Bolivian and Russian ores trade at an intermediate value between those from Costerfield and Anzob. Nearly all of the rest-of-world production is exported to China, where the ores and concentrates are processed into antimony ingots and oxides.Antimony ingot production is not as widespread as is the case with antimony mine production, owing to the high levels of pollution that are associated with antimony smelting. It is for this reason that smelting has been largely confined to China and other Asian countries ,such as Vietnam and Myanmar, where environmental legislation has historically been less stringent. Tajikistan has become a growing producer of antimony ingot since 2014, coming from the commissioned metallurgical plant at the Anzob Mine.Antimony oxide production is undertaken on four continents with China being the biggest producer. There is also a considerable amount of oxide production in Europe (mainly Belgium and France), which relies on imported antimony metal feedstock, mostly from China.A new antimony project under construction by Strategic and Precious Metals Processing (SPMP) in Oman made progress in 2016 and 2017, and after producing first metal in April 2016 in test facilities, was set to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2018. Commissioning had been moved back to June 2018, with a potential ramp-up to 2-3 kt/a (2,200 to 3,300 stpy) of antimony metal by the end of 2018. SPMP is also reviewing producing antimony oxide as part of its flow sheet."
