As the basis for the State of Minnesota's Regional Copper-Nickel Study environmental evaluation, hypothetical mine models were developed ranging in ore capacity from 5.35 to 20.00 x 106 mtpy. Open pit and underground mining operations were defined utilizing conventional methods of ore extraction. Processing of the copper-nickel sulfide material involved conventional bulk flotation of the valuable minerals, with maximum water recycle And tailing disposal. Flash smelting and electrolytic refining of the concentrate resulted in 0.10 x 106 mtpy copper plus nickel metal, plus associated cobalt and precious metals. Variations in model parameters allowed environmental trade-offs to be identified.

Large is the applicable adjective here. The largest hydraulic shovel in the world, the largest copper mine in the world, the largest copper producing company in the world. The O&K RH 300 hydraulic excavator has been put into service to move overburden and mine ore at the Chuquicamata open pit mine of the Chilean state copper mining company, Corporation Nacional de Corbre de Chile (Codelco). A large shovel: Equipped with a 26-m3 (34-yd') rock shovel, the RH 300 is able to fill a 170-t (187-st) truck in three passes with cycle times of 30 seconds. A large mine: At present, the Chuquicamata pit is 4 km (2.5 miles) long, 2 km (1.2 miles) wide, and 520 m (1700 ft) deep from rim to bottom bench. The current 450 kt/d (496,000 stpd) of material mined will increase to 600 kt/d (661,000 stpd) when the expanded production rate is reached in 1989. (Chuqui Expansion details, p. 20). A large mining company: Codelco's total output from its two open pit and three underground copper mines is more than 1.1 Mt/a (1.2 million stpy) of copper. This makes Codelco by far the largest copper producer in the world. It accounts for about 15% of the Western World's copper requirements. Chuquicamata is located in the hot and arid Atacama desert of northern Chile. The mine is located 240 km (150 miles) northeast of the port city of Antofagasta. Mine elevation is 2700 m (8850 ft). Chuquicamata's known reserves of oxide and sulfide ores amount to more than 450 Mt (496 million st) of contained copper. There are also reserves of more then 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of contained molybdenum. Originally, Chuquicamata was a rail pit. The shovels loaded rail cars hauled by locis on tracks along the benches. During the 1970s, the rail transport was replaced by truck haulage. Crushing and conveying rock waste in the pit is the latest step in the continuing evolution of more productive and economical methods of materials movement. In 1990, the in-pit crushing plant will be in operation. The waste will be mainly transported out of the pit on belt conveyors rather than trucks. The system will incorporate a 9.6-kt/h (10,600-stph) semi-portable crushing station, a 14-km (8.7-mile) conveyor using 1.8 m (6 ft) wide heavy duty belts, and a tripper-spreader to stack the waste dumps. Since Chuqui went into production in 1915, more than 2.5 Gt (2.8 billion st) of material has been excavated. This includes nearly 1.7 Gt (1.9 billion st) of ore from which some 16.4 Mt (18 million st) of copper has been recovered. The Chuquicamata porphyry type ore body is an altered and fractured intrusive granodiorite or quartz-monzonite porphyry that carries the mineralization. The action of ground water on primary sulfide minerals in geo¬logic time has created oxide ores and a zone of secondary enrich¬ment. The oxides occur above the sulfide zone and are also mixed with the upper parts of the latter. At Chuquicamata, the current grade of 1.5% copper is expected to decline to about 1% by 1995. This paper summarizes the Bureau of Reclamation's experience in the use of boring machines to excavate six major tunnels on the Bureau's water resources development projects in the western United States. The summary of experience is presented as a compilation of brief case studies for each of the six tunnels. Each compilation presents data on the tunnel dimensions, geological characteristics of the excavated rock, the tunneling machine used, machine operation, muck handling, method of tunnel support, ventilation system, and related information. The listing of the six tunnels in Table 1 reflects a diversity of tunnel lengths and diameters. However, despite this diversity of dimensions as well as the variety of rock encountered during excavation, the six tunnels have one major characteristic in common: their excavation was significantly expedited by the use of boring machines. Beginning with the 10,079-foot-long Tunnel No. 1 on the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project in New Mexico - the Bureau's first tunnel to be excavated by a boring machine - the boring machines, or "moles," have demonstrated their effectiveness in rapid and economical tunnel excavation. Tunnel No. 1, virtually 2 miles long, was bored through in 9 months, an unprecedented achievement in Bureau engineering experience, as compared with tunnels previously excavated by conventional means. A study was conducted to evaluate the applicability of large wheel loaders (Cat 994 class) as primary loading equipment in open pit iron ore operations. Field visits were made to taconite and gold mines that used large wheel loaders. Data were gathered on loader selection rationale; operating and maintenance experience; and production, availability, and cost information. Brief time studies were conducted to indicate machine performance and utilization. The paper summarizes the field data and includes economic comparisons of wheel loaders versus cable shovels in an iron ore application.

During 1995, the estimated consumption of lithium minerals in the western world was 139 kt (153,000 st).This amounted to 18 kt (20,000 st) of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE). Overall tonnage demand for lithium minerals increased by 10.8 kt (11,900 st) during 1995from 1994. From 1992 to 1995, overall tonnage demand has increased 62%, from 85.5 to 139 kt (94,240 st). There are four major producers of lithium minerals. Gwalia Consolidated in Western Australia is the largest producer of spodumene. It supplies high-grade spodumene concentrate, fine-spodumene concentrate, glass-grade spodumene and chemical-grade spodumene.Tantalum Mining (Tanco) of Manitoba, Canada, produces high-grade spodumene concentrate, fine-spodumene, concentrate and montebrasite. Bikita Minerals in Zimbabwe is the largest manufacturer of petalite. It supplies high-grade and container-glass petalite.

Classification of rock and coal is one preliminary problem for fully automated or intelligent mining. It assists in automated rib stability analysis and enables the shearer to adjust the drums without human intervention. This paper studies the classification of rock from coal on rib images using machine learning techniques. A database of rock and coal images was created by filtering photographs taken by NIOSH researchers during site visits. Machine learning was conducted on patches, smaller images randomly extracted from each rock or coal image. After training, the classifier was validated with the testing dataset and achieved an accuracy score of 0.9.

The quality of water in mine pit lakes depends in part on the physical limnology (Le. stratification, turnover, and development of anoxic conditions with depth) of the lake. Limnologic data collected from four existing pit lakes indicate that pit lakes develop a thermocline, or temperature stratification, in the upper 10m to 30 m of the water column. Two of the pit lakes (26 m and 55 m deep) undergo seasonal turnover of the entire water column, whereas two deeper pit lakes (110 m and 240 m) undergo seasonal turnover of only the upper portion of the water column. In the deeper lakes, seasonal mixing does not extend through the entire water column and a distinct chemocline develops with depth.

Feldspar, a low-alumina, and abundantly available aluminosilicate source, is explored in this study to extract aluminum and potassium values. The sample comprises lamellar layers of microcline and albite with quartz containing 17.4% Al2O3, 9.67% K2O, and 66.3% SiO2. Mechanical (milling) and thermal (alkali and acid baking) activation are investigated, followed by HCl leaching. The milling treatment up to 6 h is inefficient in phase dissociation and results in ~ 40% Al and K dissolution. The alkali thermal treatment yielded 80% Al and 71% K extraction. Direct precipitation of the dissolved Al and Si values yielded alumina purity of ~ 29%, and silica gelation separated SiO2 and improved alumina product (94% purity, 71% recovery). Acid baking yielded 98% pure alumina precipitate; however, Al and K extraction were limited to ~ 45% and 65%, respectively. The microwave-assisted alkali treatment was optimal with 800 W and 10 min processing conditions yielding 80% Al and 71% K recovery with 2.26 kWh/kg alumina of thermal energy consumption. "Slurry Microtunneling is a well-established technology building on over 20 years of experience in successful tunnel installations under all kinds of soil conditions across the U.S. and Canada. Recent microtunnel installations prove that initial hesitation, e.g. curved drives, is fading and long-distance pipe jacking projects as well as lake outfalls are being considered. One of the younger technologies is Direct Pipe®, which combines the benefits of HDD and Slurry Microtunneling. It fits exactly into the area where HDD is not feasible or too risky to apply. The paper points out the benefits of the Direct Pipe® technology for owners, engineers and contractors and discusses the latest developments of Slurry Microtunneling for long-distance, curved drives and sea/lake outfalls with wet recovery of the equipment such as on the ‘Keswick Outfall Project’ in Ontario. The first Direct Pipe® installation in the US was executed in August 2010. Since then, another 22 crossings have been carried out amongst a total of more than 60 Direct Pipe® crossings worldwide. INTRODUCTION Pipelines installed underground are indispensable for supplying the growing world population with water, oil, gas and electricity, for removing wastewater and for providing functioning telephone and communications networks. During recent years the limits of trenchless applications have been permanently shifted, leading to higher and more stringent project requirements and consequently new technologies, either as further development of existing methods, or through the development of new methods by incorporating elements of proven technologies. MICROTUNNELING TRENDS IN NORTH AMERICA Slurry Microtunneling has a wider geological application range in comparison to EPB and hard rock Microtunneling. The Slurry MTBM can be equipped with specific cutting wheels to cope with different soil conditions. The most flexible and most often employed type is the mixed soil cutting wheel, which contains a mixture of disc cutters as well as scrapers for varying soil conditions from cohesive soils (clay, silts) to highly permeable soils including sands, gravels and cobbles and even hard ground formations such as rock and boulders. A detailed geotechnical report provides the appropriate data to configure the MTBM and its features to the ground conditions expected. Mixshield or hydroshield (AVN/AVND) MTBMs in particular, can be safely operated with little overburden (~ 3-5 x machine diameter) and minimum risk of frac-out or settlement on the surface. This is especially beneficial in urban areas with sensitive buildings or for river crossings with protected fish habitats."

Geomembranes have been used in the mining industry since the early 1970s in solution and evaporation ponds, tailings impoundments, and heap leach pads. Traditionally, heap leach pad lining systems have consisted of a single geomembrane liner placed directly over a prepared subgrade of locally available soil. Heap fills are constructed by placing a layer of highly-permeable drainage stone (overliner) over the geomembrane. Crushed ore is then placed on the leach pad in 3- to 10-m (15- to 30-foot) thick lifts, sometimes reaching final heights of several hundred feet. The crushed ore is irrigated with a chemical solution which dissolves the precious metals from the ore. The nature of the chemical leaching solution depends on the metal being targeted. Low pH sulfuric acid solutions are generally used to leach copper and nickel; high pH cyanide solutions are used to leach gold and silver. The metal-laden pregnant leach solution (PLS) passes down through the ore pile and is captured in a drainage system. Metals are extracted from the leach solution and the solution is then recycled back onto the leach pile. When under load, geomembranes are vulnerable to damage from large stones both in the soil subgrade and in the overlying drainage layer. Although intact geomembranes are virtually impermeable, installed geomembranes will have a small number of holes due to imperfect seams or damage during construction and filling operations. These holes serve as open pathways for leakage into the soil below. Smith and Welkner (1995) estimated liner leakage rates ranging from 5 to 10,000 L/ha/day, depending on the type of heap pad liner and level of construction quality assurance (CQA). Thiel and Smith (2003) reported liner leakage rates up to 2,000 L/ha/day for a valley fill facility with heads ranging from 15 to 35 m.

The Ohio Valley Coal Company is expand- ing its Powhatan Mine No. 6 near Alledonia, Ohio. This expansion includes a 20 rn (65 ft) height in crease for an existing 44 rn (145 ft) coal refuse - slurry impoundment dam. The dam is being raised by upstream construction which will involve placement of more than 15 m (50 ft) of new fill over an existing reinforced concrete decant structure. This structure is 0.76 rn (30 in.) square inside and its deepest portion was under 24 m (80 ft) of coal slurry and water. The top of the decant structure was not strong enough to safely support the new fill and, because of the slurry and water, there was no way to reinforce the structure from the outside. The structure was reinforced frorn the inside by sliplining 73 m (240 ft) of 0.66 rn (26 in.) OD, 0.53 rn (21 in.) ID polyethylene pipe, grouting around this pipe with cellular concrete. and constructing a steel-fiber reinforced micro-silica concrete transition at the upslope end of the pipe. Rehabilition of the decant structure was completed in August 1989. The rehabilitated decant structure is now performing satisfactorily as fill is being placed over it for raising the dam.

The abstract highlights the importance of determining the optimum line of extraction in continuous miner workings for improved safety and productivity. The study investigates three extraction techniques (diagonal, straight line along strike, and straight line along dip-rise) using 3D numerical modeling. The dip-rise extraction technique is found to be optimal due to lower stress and displacement, leading to a higher safety factor. The research also develops a continuous miner stability index (CMSI) to predict working face stability based on mining depth and pillar width-to-height ratio.

Solvay Chemicals Company mines trona in south-central Wyoming and has done so for many years. The mine is one of several in a mid-continent sedimentary basin that hosts the largest trona resource in the world. Trona is an evaporite, a sesquicarbonate that occurs in several seams of varying thicknesses and depths. Trona is processed into soda ash which has a number of industrial uses in the manufacture of glass, detergent, paper and chemicals. Figure 1 shows the location of the Solvay Mine. A ventilation shaft was recently excavated at Solvay Chemical Company’s mine in the trona patch. In fact, a 22 ft (6.7 m) diameter shaft (inside diameter) was bored upwards from the 1500 ft (457 m) level to the surface. The first bored section was 26 ft (7.9 m) in diameter that allowed for a 2 ft (0.6 m) thick concrete liner. This section began at a depth of approximately 1500 ft (457 m). A second bored section was 24 ft, (7.3 m) in diameter that allowed for a 1 ft (0.3 m) thick concrete liner. This section began at a depth of approximately 750 ft (229 m). This shaft is the #5 Shaft. Figure 2 shows the cutter head used to excavate the shaft.

You and I can visit cement plants, inspect the various rotary kiln systems and find some equipment or some burning techniques that waste energy--fuel and power. After we have made such a visit and studied a few ideas, we could recommend ways to eliminate much of this waste. Probably every idea would cost money to bring into action. For our discussion, let us arbitrarily set an upper limit of $1,000,000 on the recommendations that we are allowed to make. Call these "low-cost" or "short-term" measures. They are improvements that do not require more than say, three months to complete; they do not require a major revision to the process. Other recommendations are "high-cost" or "long-term"; they are outside the scope of this discussion. Some of our "low-cost" recommendations would offer a satisfactory return on the money that they cost; the remainder would not. Now, is there some way that we can rather quickly pick out the "low-cost" measures that will show a satisfactory return and spend our time making these improvements first? Can we separate these items from those where the return is less likely to be good? I feel that we can pick some of these items quickly if we have a kiln system that has consistently non-uniform day-to-day operation. If the operation is uniform we probably cannot pick them quickly.

Hedges Gold Pty. Ltd. mines and processes a lateritic gold orebody approximately 120 km south east of Perth in the Darling plateau. The operation is approximately 26 km from the town of Boddington and 31 km from the town of Dwellingup. Hedges operates under The Western Australian Environmental Protection Act, Licence Number 3183. Presently, nine Limitations and Conditions are applicable to the tailings dam. These conditions apply to maximum discharge/disposal quantity permitted. Hedges mine is located in state Forest within the eastern, low rainfall section of the Darling Range and within the waler catchment area of the Murray River. Ore is carted by 120 tonne haulpacks to the plant. The plant and tailings dam is on private farm land some six kms from the mine.

A decisive date in its recent history is the collapse of the Apartheid Regime in 1994. For a metallurgist, South Africa is the country of diamonds, gold, platinum, and many other metals. In 1887 Cecil Rhodes (1853-1902) was able to take control of the De Beers Mining Company after the discovery of diamonds at Kimberly in 1866. It was there where the so-called School of Mines was inaugurated in 1896.

During harsh weather conditions, the presence of fog, dust in the environment degrades the image’s quality, which affects the visibility of drivers of heavy earth-moving machinery in opencast mines. Due to low visibility, mining operations cannot be carried out as drivers are easily prone to accidents. This paper proposes a technique that includes developing a vision enhancement system called perceptive driving assistant system for increasing visibility of real-time video of the road in front of the vehicle for operators of heavy earth-moving machinery at opencast mines during harsh weather conditions to overcome the problem. The system consists of high-quality Internet Protocol cameras and thermal cameras for real-time image processing and other well-defined devices, which is quite capable of enhancing the visibility of the image, outlining edges of the road, and detecting obstacles present on the path of operators for smooth driving and reducing threat of accidents. A high-speed graphical processing unit has been used for quality-performance parallel computing, which is well suited for real-time operations to empower fast real-time operations. The calculated frame per second (fps) of image enhancement, object detection, and edge detection is 17.91, 15.91, and 25.09 fps, respectively. The actual frame rate is 26.07 fps, and after applying the algorithm, the final frame rate is 19.65 fps. The calculated accuracy of the object detection model is 81.23%. Field trials indicate that the developed system has performed adequately during foggy weather.

American Electric Power Company (AEP operates 31 coal mines in three states, and some 26 electric generating stations (19 coal-fired) located in the Ohio River Basin. Normally the system burns over 36,071,600 tonnes (40,000,000 tons) of coal and generates in excess of 3.6 X 1018 J (100 billion kwh) of electricity per year. In 1975, AEP, in response to the progressively more stringent air quality requirements of the clean air act, acquired large low-sulfur reserves in Carbon County, Utah (Figure 1. Location Map). Price River Coal Company (PRCC) is the operator OF this multi-seam complex, which is part of the Book Cliffs coalfield at an elevation exceeding 1,829 m (6,000 ft.). The topography is mountainous and divided by numerous canyons. Flat areas are at a premium (Figure 2. Castle Gate Area). Modern high production longwall mining takes in some top and bottom waste, and in this particular operation, it amounts to about 14% of the ROM tonnage.

"This paper presents some studies on recovering valuable elements from Chinese coal by-products, including coal combustion fly ash, stone coal ash, and coal flotation tailings. Both commercialized technologies and economic potential recovery methods are described in this study. Magnetically stabilized air-dense medium fluidized bed separation, tribo-electrostatic separation, froth flotation, and hydrometallurgical methods are discussed in recovering various valuable elements in Chinese coal by-products from different coalfields. These valuable elements include iron, carbon, aluminum, rare earth elements, lithium, gallium, germanium, uranium, titanium, scandium, silicon, vanadium and phosphorus, etc. The ultimate goal is to fully utilize all valuable elements in coal by-product. Each component within coal by-product should be efficiently segregated to its highest value. INTRODUCTION Coal is mainly composed of energy-producing elements carbon and hydrogen. In addition to these elements, coal usually contains many other valuable elements, including iron, aluminum, silicon, rare earth elements, lithium, gallium, germanium, vanadium, uranium, titanium, scandium, and phosphorus, etc. These coal-associated elements are significantly enriched in coal combustion by-product fly ash because of majority of main components, carbon and hydrogen elements, being removed. Table 1 provides the chemical composition range of the main elements oxides in 12 Chinese fly ash samples collected from coal power plants located in Northeast China, Northwest China, Southwest China, and Southeast China. It can be seen from Table 1 that the major mineral components of different ashes are similar, but the bulk chemistry of different fly ashes may vary widely due to the changes of ratios of the mineral components in different coals. The major mineral components in various Chinese coal combustion fly ash are silicates, iron oxides, and unburned carbon."

Gold-bearing outcrops were discovered in 1862 by Union soldiers garrisoned at Needles, CA, near the northwest corner of the future State of Arizona. Sporadic mining began several years later, but engineered shaft sinking and mill construction were not adopted at Oatman and the neighboring camp of Goldroad until about 1900. Geological interpretations in 1915 enabled major production during the next decade. In the late-1930s, USSR&M built a new mine and mill in Gold Road and the District flourished until closure by Federal Order L-208 in October 1942. For about a decade, Oatman’s mines were among the largest gold producers in the American West.
