Perlite is a generic term for naturally occurring siliceous rock. It is a form of natural volcanic glass the main constituent of which is amorphous silica (70-76%). Perlite, when heated rapidly to its softening temperature range, expands from four to twenty times its original volume, due to the presence of 2-6% ?combined? water, in a manner similar to popcorn as the H2O molecules vaporize and create countless tiny bubbles, which account for its exceptional physical properties: light weight (30-150 kg/m3), low thermal conductivity, cellular structure, in general. These properties make perlite adaptable for numerous end-uses, which can be distinguished into 2 categories: Expanded perlite applications in: a) Construction Materials market (e.g. Acoustical Tiles, light-weight insulating Mortars, self-levelling Concrete), b) Agriculture (e.g. Hydroponics), c) Food and Chemical industry (e.g. Filtration Media, Filler, etc.), d) Insulation and Heat resistance technology (e.g. Cryogenic vessels, Refractory Bricks, etc.). Unexpanded Graded perlite applications in: a) Phosphoric Fertilizers industry (additive in H3PO4 production), b) Foundry technology (slag-aid, insulating and heat resistance agent).

Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been used for the construction of various tunnels for mining projects for the purpose of access, conveyance of ore and waste, drainage, exploration, water supply and water diversion. Several mining projects have seen the successful and economic beneficial use of TBMs, and there is an increasing awareness of the benefits of TBMs for mining projects. Key technical considerations for the use of TBMs for the construction of tunnels for mining projects include geological issues (rock type, rock alteration, rock strength, rock abrasivity, durability, ground water in flows), depth of cover and the potential for overstressing/rockbursts, site access and terrain, portal locations, TBM constraints, minimum tunnel size, tunnel support requirements, contractor and labor experience, and project schedule demands. TBMs offer key project schedule benefits with high rates of progress, which is a unique economic advantage recognized for mining projects where timing is of the essence in order to advance mining development and achieve early startup for operations. A thorough evaluation of the anticipated ground conditions should be performed as part of the decision to adopt a TBM for a mining project. Minimum specifications for TBMs are necessary in order to prevent the incorrect type of TBM from being used. Appropriate geotechnical investigations are necessary in order to provide key information on the anticipated subsurface conditions for careful planning and design of the proposed tunnel alignment. The overall site and geological conditions associated with some projects may suggest that it is not appropriate to use TBMs for some mining projects due to a perceived higher risk. Organized efforts toward the prevention of injuries and occupational diseases have been of comparatively recent origin in the mining industry, dating generally from the beginning of this century. Mining-and particularly underground mining- is more hazardous in many respects than most other major industries, and continual and increasing attention has been given to its health and safety aspects. The importance of the physical well-being of those engaged in mining was recognized by Agricola, who, after describing the hazards encountered in 16th century mining operations, stated that "Some of these evils, as well as certain other things, are the reason why pits are occasionally abandoned." In the past 50 yr particularly, mine managements and labor organizations, separately or collectively, have mounted productive efforts toward the prevention of accidents and industry-associated diseases and illnesses. A statistical study of this period indicates that increasing awareness coupled with the endeavors of all concerned agencies has resulted in decreasing frequency of occurrences of injuries and illnesses. In recent years particularly the mining industry has used the services of safety engineers, industrial hygienists, inspectors, ventilation engineers and other specializing in locating and correcting deficiencies affecting the welfare of employees. Concurrently, the labor movement has incorporated into its organization individuals working in the fields of health and safety, many devoting full time to these responsibilities. Others serve in behalf of their fellow workmen as on-the-job safety representatives. Most authorities agree that accidents are caused by (1) unsafe acts, (2) unsafe conditions and, exceptionally, (3) Acts of God. The "unsafe act" often is cited as the prime cause. but many accidents, and attendant injuries, are the result of a blend of "unsafe acts" and "unsafe conditions," with each chargeable in varying proportions. It therefore is necessary to consider both the physical elements of the mine plant and the training, mental attributes and actions of all personnel involved. Analysis of an accident, if based on hasty reconnaissance and unduly hurried questioning, seldom will disclose more than surface causes and consequently will result in inadequate measures to prevent repetition. Mining involves unavoidable and calculated risks, as in all facets of life. It is most important then that men employed in mining be schooled in the hazards and develop fully the ability to evaluate and minimize risks. The environment, of underground mining often is harsh and strange compared to the more natural surface conditions man has learned to cope with as a part of established life patterns. Established in the 60-ies, the Zlatna Panega quarry is a cement raw materials quarry supplying 95% of the needs of the Zlatna Panega Cement Plant with limestone, marl and other silica-aluminates. The two major types of raw materials are formed by accordingly dipping strata of Upper Jurassic limestones and lower Cretaceous marls. Between them there is a ?transition-zone? or ?contact-zone? of a high-silica content layer, about 5-m thick, defined as ?flint? by investigations including spot sampling throughout the quarry. For many years this ?contact-zone? layer was neglected due its negligible thickness. Further, with the increasing demand on the quality of the raw materials feed to the Plant and the focus on variability of the chemical and mineralogical components, it was decided not to mine any of the parts of the quarry contaminated by this material, for about three years. The latter had an impact on the availability of operating benches that could result in a substantial decrease in the total recoverable re-serves of Zlatna Panega, particularly with respect to marls. There were considerations for resorting to a partial, selective excavation of the quarry pit with a reduced lifetime for the lime-stones and re-opening of an other (currently in-active) marl quarry at a distance of 6 Km from the Plant. The Quarry Team of the Zlatna Panega quarry was assigned to study the problem. The ?contact? layer was duly confirmed with systematic geological (including mineralogy) studies, statistical analysis of available data, surface sampling and shallow exploration drills, resulted into distinguishing a third type of reserves and their credible subsurface delineation by means of geological 3-D modeling and quarry design. A new quarry design was finally elaborated with a view of providing flexibility in mining, utilization of the total volume of all available reserves and maximizing the mine life of Zlatna Panega quarry. An industrial test took place in December 2005, by using the contaminated parts of the quarry (co-mining of the ?contact-zone? materials) at a contribution of 15-20% in the raw materials mix, as dictated by their contribution in the total recoverable resources of the quarry. The purpose was to investigate the viability of this solution ? in line with improved quarry planning ? without compromising the quality of cement production and the efficiency of Plant Operations. Results were overall successful.

During the next five years, there will be a trend toward performing belt cleaner maintenance while the conveyor is in operation. Most mines and industrial sites that use belt conveyors have an in-house safety rule that the belt must be stopped before maintenance work can be performed on any belt-cleaning device. This is a good rule. Most cleaning devices are positioned against the belt with hardware that requires the service technician to reach or climb into the chute to change the cleaning blades. But this simple rule becomes more complicated as production demands require higher conveyor availability and provide fewer conveyor outages. In many cases, today’s conveyors are expected to be available 98% to100% of the time.

The Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration held the 12th MPD Student Poster Contest on March 2, 2022, during the MINEXCHANGE 2022 SME Annual Conference & Expo. The event showcased the work of 32 graduate and undergraduate students from U.S. and international institutions. The contest began in January when the students submitted one‐page abstracts for judging. In February, they prepared and presented posters that explained their research, and each student had five minutes to explain their research to a panel of judges during the conference. Recognizing the students’ efforts in working hard on their research topics and setting aside time to complete the necessary steps to enter the poster contest, the MPD provides monetary rewards to all participants. For graduate students, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, and third through seventh places $200 each, and for undergraduate students, first place receives $1,000 and second place $500. The main authors of nonplacing entries receive $125 each. Participation in the contest includes a free ticket to the MPD Luncheon, where the winners are announced.

The western united States is not usually noted for the production of fluorspar; however, many significant fluorspar districts do occur in the Rocky Mountain region and constitute a resource of sizable dimension and major potential. This is particularly true within the area of the West served by the rail lines of the Union Pacific Railroad (see Figure 1). Fluorspar deposits near the Union Pacific have produced over 1.3 million tons of finished fluorspar products from 2.3 million tons of ore. Approximately 80% of this production was of acid-grade and 20% of metallurgical-grade fluorspar. Production of ceramic-grade was negligible. Through the years substantial production has come from eight mining districts. Five of these have produced metallurgical-grade and three acid-grade. The best-known fluorspar producing area in the West is the Jamestown Mining District. It was one of the first producers of fluorspar in the western United States and is estimated to have produced over 500,000 tons of finished fluorspar from over a million tons of ore. The district encompasses approximately 36 square miles in central Boulder County, Colorado, about 9 miles northwest of the City of Boulder. Although small shipments were made from the district as early as 1873 or 1874, significant sustained production was not achieved until 1940 when the General Chemical Company, now a division of the Allied Chemical company, acquired the Alice, Burlington, Chancellor,

To evaluate methane explosion hazards in longwall coal mines, a CFD model was developed along with a 1/40th-scale, optically accessible model of an underground longwall coal mining section. In this project, CFD models assisted in the design of the physical model to ensure specifications were met for accurately representing the scaling physics as well as to assist in narrowing the experimental matrix and identifying key locations for sensor placement to measure velocity, pressure, and gas concentrations. This research will help develop strategies for methane monitoring that prevent methane ignitions and explosions in longwall coal operations.

Subsidence from underground coal mining alters surface water discharge and availability. The magnitude and areal extent of these impacts are dependent on many factors, including the amount of subsidence, topography, geology, climate, surface water - ground water interactions, and fractures in the overburden. These alterations may have positive and/or negative impacts. One of the most significant surface water impacts occurred in July 1957 near West Pittston, Pennsylvania. Subsidence in the Knox Mine under the Coxton Yards of the Lehigh Valley Railroad allowed pan of the discharge in the Susquehanna River to flow into the mine and create a crater 200 feet in diameter and 300 feet deep. Fourteen railroad gondola cars fell into the hole which was eventually filled with rock, sand, and gravel. Other surface water impacts from subsidence may include the loss of water to the ground water system, the gaining of water from the ground water system, the creation of flooded subsidence troughs, the increasing of impoundment storage capacity, the relocation of water sources (springs), and the alteration of surface drainage patterns.

G.M. Philip and D.F. Watson The article cited above reflects the difficulty that is often encountered in interpreting different aspects of kriging. Baafi et al. write : "Due to negative kriging weights, negative block grades may be obtained in some extreme situations, which makes no practical sense." Their solution to this particular problem is to constrain the kriged estimates to data values that have positive weights, i.e., reduce the subset size contributing to the estimation. As Journel (1986, p. 133) has already observed, "Negative weights are no evil." Indeed, they are an ineluctable result of the Lagrangian multipliers in the system of simultaneous equations. The fact that data distant from the estimation point may be given negative weights simply means that the influence of such distant values must be negated because their influence is contradictory to closer values (as illustrated by Baafi et al. in their Figs. 3 and 4). Of course negative kriging weights applied to distant grade values will not in themselves induce negative grade at some central interpolation point. Negative grade values, rather, seem to be a particular artifact of automatic methods of estimation involving accu¬mulations (Philip and Watson, 1985a, 1985b, 1987b). The elimination of negative weights, suggested by Baafi et al., is likely to exacerbate a quite different problem of kriging and piecewise spline interpolation discussed elsewhere (Philip and Watson, 1987a). In interpolating large data sets of scattered observations, changing local subsets or neighborhoods must be selected automatically. Because of the mathematical formulation of kriging and spline interpolation, discontinuities then occur between closely-spaced estimation points as the subset used in the estimation changes. If this subset is reduced in number and size, the discontinuities will be amplified and more common. ? Kim Before replying to the comments by Philip and Watson, it is desirable to establish the original perspective of our paper, which was intended primarily for the practitioners of mining who possess a working knowledge of ordinary kriging. The paper tried to convey the following practical points: (1) there are circumstances in which one observes negative weights, (2) illustration of circumstances under which one can expect negative weights, (3) should one obtain a negative estimated grade, one can resort to elimination of negative weights using the technique outlined in the paper, and (4) one could normally select only the first layer of surrounding assays to estimate the block grade. Under such a perspective, most of the comments by Philip and Watson are irrelevant and misdirected. For example, the practitioners do not find it difficult to "interpret" the results of ordinary kriging, as evidenced by the fact that they have been using the results for nearly a decade. Nor are the practitioners concerned with discontinuities in estimated block grades due to changing neighborhood of assays during kriging. What matters to the practitioners is the fact that kriging does provide the best estimate among all the estimation tools available to them as of today. ?

A tower-like magnetic system comprising eight permanent magnets was installed at the center of a flotation column to separate chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite minerals. A cyclonic flotation was installed within the underpart of the column to separate the pyrrhotite from the gangues. A three-product magnetic flotation column was fabricated to create a magnetic field and a cyclonic zone. The products were Cu concentrates, pyrrhotite concentrates and tailings. The theoretical magnetic field strengths and the magnetic forces were calculated. The results of the flotation experiments showed that the Cu grade increased from 14.20% without the magnetic field to 26.40% in the presence of the magnetic field and that the S grade in the pyrrhotite concentrates increased in the presence of cyclonic flotation. The separation efficiency of this magnetic flotation column was evident. Therefore, this three-product magnetic flotation column may have a potential application, due to its high separation efficiency.

"Construction of large facilities underground in urban areas has many advantages. In order to show the advantages, a case study of the Norsborg metro depot in Stockholm Sweden has been made. The Norsborg metro depot will be the largest and most modern underground metro depot in northern Europe. The depot has been built in hard rock in an urban area with small impact on the environment and local residents. The paper describes how it is possible to build underground facilities in a cost efficient way and take care of the challenges regarding working environment that comes with locating a permanent working place underground. INTRODUCTION The Stockholm area is one of the five fastest growing regions in Europe and home to more than a fifth of Sweden's population on just two percent of Sweden's surface. The population is growing rapidly, with about 35,000 people per year and is expected to reach 2.6 million in 2030. In order to meet the development and enable continued growth, housing projects and expansion of infrastructure need to keep the same pace; this is an easy conclusion to make but much more difficult to realize in practice. The main challenge is to accomplish development in a sustainable and efficient manner, minimizing the use of resources and land. By constructing facilities underground more urban space will be made available for development and/or for greening of city centers. Considering sustainability factors such as land value in decision making for placing of structures or facilities, underground locations could become a first choice alternative. During 2015 and 2016, several major underground infrastructure projects in the city of Stockholm will start, including a 14 km sewage tunnel and an 18 km by-pass highway tunnel. Furthermore the Stockholm metro system is currently undergoing the largest expansion since the 1970’s, a 19 kilometers extension of the metro system including new trains and new stations is planned. During 2013 - 2015 Skanska Sweden took part in the construction of a new metro depot placed underground in the southern part of Stockholm; the Norsborg metro depot. This is a top modern urban underground facility that in 2017 will serve as depot for 17 new metro trains. The project was selected for “Outstanding Project of The Year” at the ITA Tunneling Awards 2015."

The shear strength properties of generic cement foam material and cement foam/concrete interfaces were examined at three testing scales. In laboratory direct shear tests on specimens with average shearing area of 0.006 m2 (10 in.2), the cement foam material had average peak and residual shear strengths of 0.88 MPa (128 psi) and 0.39 MPa (56 psi), respectively. Depending on the concrete strength, the cement foam/concrete interfaces had peak and residual shear strengths ranging from 0.71 to 0.81 MPa (103 to 117 psi) and from 0.27 to 0.29 MPa (39 to 42 psi), respectively. In laboratory direct double shear tests on specimens with average shearing area of 0.084 m2 (130 in.2), the cement foam/concrete interfaces had average peak and residual shear strengths of 0.17 to 0.30 MPa (25 to 44 psi) and of 0.11 to 0.23 MPa (16 to 33 psi), respectively. In large shear tests of simulated cement foam seals with the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) test frame, cement foam/concrete interfaces with shearing area of 1.486 m2 (2,304 in.2) had average shear strengths of about 0.08 and 0.16 MPa (11 and 23 psi) along the roof and floor interfaces, respectively. The average shear strength through the cement foam material was 0.38 MPa (55.3 psi). Finite element analysis of the large seal tests and the back analysis of the shear strength of full-scale cement foam seals conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory confirmed shear strength of about 0.14 MPa (20 psi) along the seal/rock interfaces. The study concluded that the structural analysis of cement foam seals should be based on their residual shear strength determined from small laboratoryscale tests of the cement foam/concrete or rock interface and not be based on their peak strength.

The flocculation of -38 pm calcite, hematite and kaolinite aqueous suspensions by the yeast Candida parapsilosis and products derived from rupture of the microorganism was studied. Flocculation of hematite suspensions by the microorganism and its derivatives readily takes place between pH 2.8 and 11.4. Maximum flocculation occurs at about pH 6.5. Flocculation of calcite suspensions by the microorganism and its derivatives readily takes place between pH 7.0 and 11.8. Maximum flocculation occurs at about pH 10.0. Flocculation of kaolinite suspensions was less than that for the other two minerals. However, a soluble fraction derived from the rupture of the organism functioned as a good flocculant for the mineral, albeit at an increased concentration, between pH 2.6 and 11.5. Maximum flocculation occurs between pH 6.8 and 7.2. An attempt is made to relate the behavior of the various systems to the surface characteristics of the minerals and the surface and chemical properties of microorganism and its derivatives. Experimentation used to evaluate the flocculation includes actual flocculation tests, microelectrophoresis measurements and scanning electron microscopy.

Mineworkers face a challenging and dynamic work environment every workday. To maintain a safe workplace, mineworkers must be able to recognize worksite hazards while they perform their jobs. Though hazard recognition is a critical skill, recent research from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicates that mineworkers fail to identify a significant number of hazards. To further the understanding of mineworkers’ hazard recognition ability and to begin to address hazard recognition performance, NIOSH researchers analyzed data collected during a laboratory research study to determine the effect of individual mineworker factors including risk attitude, work experience, and safety training on hazard recognition accuracy. The results of this study show that mineworker risk attitude and safety-specific work experience affect hazard recognition performance while hazard-specific safety training does not. These results suggest that some of these individual factors can be overcome through experience and training. Potential strategies that can be used to address these factors are also discussed.

Many coal preparation plants discard fine coal (generally minus 100 mesh) because it is difficult to beneficiate economically. At the Kentucky Energy Cabinet Laboratory (KECL), the waste streams from several Kentucky preparation plants were evaluated for cleaning with counter-current column flotation. A series of performance evaluations were conducted using a 0.05 m (2 in.) internal diameter (I.D.) 7.9 m (26 ft.) high laboratory column. The objectives of these tests were to assess the performance in terms of recovery and percent ash in clean coal and to optimize the operating parameters relative to combustible recovery and grade. Refuse streams containing 30-50 percent ash were upgraded to 2-8 percent ash with Btu recoveries of nearly 90 percent. A pilot scale column flotation cell was installed at the Bell County Coal preparation plant. This pilot plant utilized a 5.79 m (19 ft.) high and 0.15 m (6 in.) I.D. column to verify the performance data of the 0.05 m (2 in.) I.D. column for two different waste streams. Performance evaluation and pilot plant testing results related to scale-up are discussed.

This paper outlines the results of a study of opinions of practicing engineers concerning the value of environmental engineering courses in a mining engineering curriculum. One hundred engineers with significant experience in mining-related engineering work were carefully chosen. Of the sixty-seven responses received, about half were from mining engineers and half from environmental engineers. The results of the survey are outlined in detail. The number and type of courses recommended by the respondents are summarized as well as the specific topics recommended for inclusion in a mining engineering curriculum. The survey form also asked for the stages in the mine life when environmental experts were needed and the percentage of environmental engineering performed by outside experts for many mining-related environmental tasks. The results of this line of questions are provided. Finally, the paper offers a comparison of the results for environmental engineers and mining engineers and analyzes the differences.

Elevation of surface charge density on colloidal particles in the presence of a high potential electrostatic field is demonstrated as a viable technique for preventing the accumulation of solids in solvent extraction circuits. The effect of the technique is manifest by relative turbidity measurements between pregnant leach solution and raffinate, by changes in the character of the sludge accumulations, by alteration of the zeta potential of particulates, and by a general reduction in the mass of solids.

The concept of sustainable development is not new to the mining industry. Many people involved with mining have argued that the industry throughout the world has always supported the communities where they operated. They say that the mining industry was employing sustainable development practices before the phrase became fashionable. The mines employed residents and supported the local economy through tax payments and the purchase of goods and services from local businesses. In many cases, mining companies have built medical facilities and contributed money, equipment and services to local schools. In modern times, mining companies have donated reclaimed land to the local communities for use as parks and recreational facilities.
