Start with your assessment of the minerals business —domestic mining as well as operational and consulting perspectives. As a third generation miner, I have been living the mining business for as long as I can remember. I have watched commodity prices produce boom and bust cycles in places like Price, Utah (coal), Douglas, Arizona (copper) and Eureka, Nevada (gold). It is unsettling to see how our industry has fluctuated, but it always seems to rebound if you can stick out the down cycles. However, our most recent dip in the cycle was, in my opinion, characteristically and permanently different. In the past, when prices went south, people hunkered down and waited out the cycle until things came back, much the same as they had every other time. Not this time. This time, we saw a consolidation of the industry in proportions never seen before. Mega-mergers like Exxon-Mobil, Phelps Dodge-Cyprus and Newmont-Normandy have changed the complexion of our industry forever. And that is true not just of the mining companies; it happened across the supporting business lines as well. As a midsized niche engineering and environmental service provider to the mining industry, companies like mine are few and far between these days. The lean cycle saw many of the small and midsized providers get gobbled up by consulting giants like URS and TetraTech. The mentality of a mega-company, whether a commodity producer or a goods or service provider, is different than that of their small- and medium-sized counterparts.

The mining industry is at a crossroad. To sustain our technically based society, demands for commodities are increasing, and exploration for these commodities is a must. The debate is between sustainable development and the status quo and begins with exploration, where it is determined if a mineralized area contains enough potential ore to be mined economically. Mineral deposits are relatively rare and depend upon certain natural geologic conditions to form and may not always occur in locations that are most suitable to society. Exploration can be compatible with environmental protection and social responsibility, but difficult challenges face the industry to develop a property that is environmentally, economically, and socially responsible.

In order to best-discuss the met spar industry let me take the liberty to review our involvement, that is, my company's. Our organization has been involved in the fluorspar industry for approximately thirty-five years. We started our activity in Western Kentucky as a mining company and a beneficiator of spar, that is, grinding and grading. After a few short years, the mine became contaminated and rather than invest in a flotation plant, the property was sold and our spar activity was moved, primarily to Mexico. It was decided not to establish ourselves as a Mexican corporation, so, it was necessary to take the position of backer-financier of numerous mining operations. We served in this capacity for quite some time. We also built processing plants on the border in Texas, that is, sizing, grading, etc. in order to market into the steel industry. In 1957, generally speaking, fluorspar for the steel industry was purchased as gravel fluorspar with a maximum of 10% -1/16". The price of this material was $23.50 to $24.00 per ton f.o.b. railcar at the Rio Grande Crossings and about $26.00 or $26.25 f.o.b. barge, Brownsville, Texas. Usually the material was purchased on an effective basis. As you know, 2-1/2 times the silica total, subtracted from the total CaF2 gives the effective calcium fluoride. This was normally the extent of the chemical specifications. Consequently, material was shipped with no regard whatever, to anything other than effective units. The variations in material was absolutely unbelievable. In addition to this, quite frequently, cars were shipped, as they say in the industry, topped. This being, good material placed in the top of cars or barges over bad or low grade. The entire shipment may very well have met the effective unit spec, but the complete imbalance of the sub grade vs. the high grade more or less guaranteed that the consumer was probably using a great deal of low grade and therefore, his usage had to be way higher than it should have been. He came to the conclusion, that because of these conditions and the new technology developing in the steel industry, it was just a matter of time that the entire raw material industry would have to improve. Rather than spend our efforts directed to a substitute flux, we put together a sizing and grading plant in order to ship a controlled crude product, with independent laboratory analysis confirming size and quality. The age of control was started. We began shipping 70 to 72-1/2, 80 and 85 effective with sizing 1/2" by 2", 1" by 3", and 2" by 5" with absolute control on the amount of fines. A material with no fines was a premium product. Incidentally it sold for $24.50 -60 effective up to $28.50, $29.50 for 80 effective.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics and the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics publish data for a range of industries, allowing a measure of performance to be quantified, called multifactor productivity (MFP), and allowing performance between industries to be compared on a consistent basis. At the time of writing, the last released data was for 2011-2012. For Australia, the plot of mining industry productivity and a basket of the 12 most significant industries in Australia?s economy (including mining) are shown in Fig. 1. For the United States, mining and petroleum and all manufacturing productivity are also displayed in Fig. 1. The trends are as follows: ? The MFP in the Australian mining sector rose 36 percent from 1986-1987 to 2000-2001. There was a 47-percent decline in MFP from 2000-2001 to 2011-2012 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2011). ? The MFP in the United States mining sector rose 17 percent from 1986-1987 to 2004-2005. There was a 7-percent decline in MFP 2004-2005 to 2010-2011, (Topp et al., 2008).

Thermal treatment can significantly improve industrial comminution operations by reducing energy requirements and increasing mineral liberation. The assistance of thermal pretreatment prior to grinding by microwave heating is scrutinized in this study. For this purpose three copper ore samples with different chemical composition were used. To see the effect of microwave heating on ore; work index, breakage rate and breakage distribution functions of original and heat treated samples were examined. The results obtained in this study did not show significant improvement in the grindability characteristics of the studied ores with microwave heat treatment. The inadequate amount of microwave transparent matrix was the main reason for the absence of cracks and micro-fractures in the microwave heated copper samples.

Spatial and temporal temperature variations in a high-level radioactive waste repository drift can give rise to moisture transport within the drift. Knowledge of this moisture transport may be important to assessing the potential for corrosion of all metallic components in the drift. The model presented here shows one approach to simulating evaporation, transport, and condensation of water in large underground openings using a framework based on computational fluid dynamics. Simulation results that explicitly model water and latent heat transport are presented.

The perlite industry in the United States continued to undergo rapid change and increased competition last year as it did in 2002. U.S. production in 2004 was 510 kt (562,000 st),an increase following five consecutive years of decline (Table 1). Perlite is exported to Canada and to the Pacific Rim. These partially offset imports. Perlite imports from Greece to the eastern and Gulf Coasts of the United States declined by about 22 percent after reaching a record 240 kt (264,000 st) in 2003.But their market remains protected by high rail rates from western U.S. plants. Minor imports of perlite persist by Termolita from Mexico.

Pre-combustion coal cleaning and post-combustion flue gas desulfurization (FGD) using lime or limestone are the primary methods employed to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission from coal combustion. These processes generate voluminous pyrite and gypsum solid wastes that are usually landfilled, occupying thousands of acres of land and creating serious land and water pollution problems due to the release of acids and toxic substances. An integrated process has been developed for the combined utilization of gypsum and pyrite wastes by converting them into useful products including lime, sulfur, and direct reduced iron (DRI). The process includes four major steps. The first step is to concentrate pyrite from coal preparation tailings using flotation or gravity separation. The second is the thermal decomposition of pyrite into pyrrhotite and sulfur. This is followed by the reduction of pyrrhotite with carbon in the presence of lime to produce iron and calcium sulfide. The fourth step involves the reaction of calcium sulfide with gypsum to produce lime. The chemical reactions involved in the process were studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD)techniques. Process variables studied included reaction temperature, time, reactant composition, and purity of reactants.

In this study, bacterial pre-treatment was applied before cyanidation in order to enhance the solubilization of silver from Artvin-Kafkasör ore Direct cyanidation process was found inefficient to recover silver from the ore. Only 40.36% silver recovery was obtained with direct cyanidation while silver recoveries of above 60% were obtained after bacterial treatment. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was used as the microorganism in pretreatment tests. Effects of various parameters such as pulp density, duration, inoculum size and particle size on silver recovery have been investigated in this study.

The estimated value of natural gemstones produced from U.S. deposits during 2004 was $12.9 million. This was a 3-percent increase from that of 2003. U.S. gemstone production included agates, amber, beryl, coral, garnet, jade, jasper, opal, pearl, quartz, sapphire, shell, topaz, tourmaline, turquoise and other gem materials. More than 60 varieties of gemstones have been produced commercially from U.S. mines. But commercial mining of gemstones has never been extensively undertaken in the United States. Most of the deposits have been relatively small compared with other mining operations. In the United States, much of the current gemstone mining is conducted by collectors, gem clubs and hobbyists rather than business organizations.

In 1967, development of the Cyprus Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit began near Challis, ID. The first mining claims were staked on an intrusive rock out-crop. Exploration continued for 14 years. In 1978, the decision was made to develop the deposit. In Dec. 1980, approval was received for the environmental impact statement and facilities construction and waste rock removal began. By the middle of 1983, 126 Mt (139 million st) of rock had been removed and all facilities completed. Location The Thompson Creek project is located about 58 km (36 miles) southwest of Challis in Custer County, in south central Idaho. The mine and mill are situated between 2.2 and 2.6 km (7,217 and 8,530 ft) in elevation. The project is located in an isolated area. Before and during in situ mining at the Santa Cruz In Situ Copper Mining Research Project test site, hydraulic testing was conducted at injection and recovery test wells to characterize patterns of fluid movement in the 5-spot well field. Testing included borehole spinner flow meter surveys, single-well and multiple-well injection and recovery tests, straddle packer injection tests, and bromide pulse tracer tests. Results of hydraulic testing for determination of fluid flow regimes were used to modify well and mining zone hydraulics for the purpose of increasing fluid migration in flow pathways of the mining zone with higher copper grade.

Potash is an important natural mineral used largely as a fertilizer in the production of food and fiber. About 93 percent of all potash consumed globally is used in agriculture as fertilizer. The balance is used to manufacture potassium chemicals. Most potash is extracted by conventional underground mining methods. Solution mining is used when underground deposits are irregular and very deep. The other main production method involves the evaporation of brines in shallow salt lakes, followed by the harvesting of potassium minerals.

To meet increasing demand of coal, underground mining is largely being replaced by the exploitation at deeper horizons and with greater complexities. The exploitation-proposition may be below not-to-be-disturbed surface properties or below water-bodies, posing a constant threat of inundation. Also, the mounting pressures to limit the adverse impacts on the environment bring the extraction-undertaking to face more challenges. An understanding of subsidence-mechanism and a rational quantification of subsidence parameters is a requisite herein. This paper presents such pragmatic quantification, validated at mine-sites in India. In comparison, better productivity, conservation and safety is ensured in this approach.

Heightened environmental consciousness has resulted in the development of various international accords dealing with natural resource management. This international awareness is now being translated into regional and local initiatives that proactively implement collaborative environmental management programs. One such program was recently initiated in northern Chile in recognition of the interconnection of Andean salars. Cooperative efforts between industry, governmental agencies and academic professionals have resulted in the implementation of simultaneous environmental monitoring of flora and fauna in the salars of northern Chile. This coordinated effort is leading to an improved understanding of the migratory patterns of South American fauna, as well as improved access to an expanded database for the multiple user groups associated with the Andean salars. The El Abra Mine is actively participating in these coordinated monitoring efforts.

Introduction The Cove gold-silver deposit is located in Lander County, NV about 50 km (30 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit is in the north-central part of the Fish Creek Mountains within the McCoy mining district. Gold was first discovered in the McCoy district in 1914 by Joseph H. McCoy (Vanderburg, 1939). From 1928 to the early 1930s, minor production occurred from shallow underground workings. Total gold production was less than 311 kg (10,000 oz; Stager, 1977). The district was inactive until the mid-1960s when it was explored by Bear Creek Mining, Summa Corp., Houston Oil and Minerals Corp., Gold Fields, and Tenneco Minerals. Tenneco began a detailed reevaluation of the McCoy deposit in the fall of 1984. Tenneco's decision to place the deposit into production was based on a geological reserve of 8.7 t (280,000 oz) of gold (Kuyper, 1987). Subsequent exploration and development drilling of the McCoy skarn deposit has more than doubled the mineable skarn reserves to 19 t (615,000 oz) of gold. In September 1985, Tenneco began development work on the McCoy gold-skarn deposit. The project is an open-pit, heap leach mine. The first gold was poured in April 1986. Echo Bay Mines acquired Tenneco's precious metals properties in October 1986. The mining operation and district exploration started by Tenneco is continuing under the Echo Bay's ownership. The Cove deposit was discovered in January 1987 and production began in February 1988. The deposit will begin as an open-pit, heap leach operation. It will be converted into an open-pit and underground mine with a 9-kt (10,000-stpd) mill. Geologic setting The Cove gold-silver deposit is situated on the east flank of the Fish Creek Range. Surface elevations range from 1460 to 1680 m (4800 to 5500 ft). The deposit is 1.6 km (1 mile) northeast of the McCoy gold-skarn deposit. The Cove deposit is hosted by the Augusta Sequence of Triassic age. Three formations of the sequence are mineralized at the Cove. In ascending order they are the Favret, Panther Canyon, and Augusta Mountain formations. The Favret formation is a gray, locally silty limestone that is commonly fossiliferous. The base of the formation is not exposed. Exposed and drilled intervals are more than 60 m (200 ft) thick. Conformably overlying the Favret formation is the Panther Canyon formation. This formation is 215 m (700 ft) thick and consists of a siliclastic and carbonate sequence of conglomerate, quartzite (sandstone), mudstone, limestone, and dolomite. "Feather edging"- a major source of injury and fatal accidents in Australia, South Africa and USA, refers to a phenomenon where the roof, at the goaf edge, falls as a thin wafer of rock often suddenly, over-riding conventional timber breakerlines. It may run down and affect adversely a working bord at distances of 15 metres or more from the goaf edge. Feather edging typically occurs in relatively massive, strong roof strata such as sandstone or conglomerate. This paper presents the results of a mine trial where a concentrated row of fully grouted bolts were able to resist the feather edging in the first comprehensive, monitored trial in an Australian pillar ('total') extraction coal mine.

Installation of a horizontal air blocking shelf around the inside perimeter of the surface mining drill deck shroud is proposed to improve dust capture. Without the use of this shelf, a strong coanda effect airflow pattern results in dust leakage to the environment, especially at the shroud-to-ground interface. Bailing air exits the drill hole and travels along the drill steel to the underside of the table, where it fans out across the bottom of the drill table and continues down the sides of the shroud. This dust-laden bailing air then strikes the ground and fans out under gaps between the shroud and the ground. The proposed shelf prevents dust-laden air from striking the ground by redirecting it toward the center of the enclosure, where it can be captured. Laboratory tests demonstrated that the shelf reduced dust levels outside of the shroud by 81% under operating conditions consisting of a 1.9:1 collector to bailing airflow ratio, and a 5.1-cm (2-in) gap between the shroud and ground. The shelf was 15.2-cm (6-in) wide and located at a height equal to 2/3 the distance measured from the bottom of the shroud to the bottom of the drill table. The air blocking shelf was also capable of overcoming the adverse impact of vertical leakage along the shroud seams as long as this leakage was confined to an area below the horizontal plane defined by the shelf location.

Backfill systems have been used for as long as mining activities have existed. Various backfill methods have been developed over the centuries with consideration for geological necessities, the technical means available, security requirements, and available finances. In the past, backfill systems were introduced and upgraded geographically in accordance with local experiences. In modern times, mining engineers participate in international forums for the exchange of knowledge so that backfill techniques and experiences are shared concurrently in mining areas all over the world. Mine backfilling increases the cost of mining so that great attention must be paid to choose a low-cost, reliable, and low maintenance backfill system. Some methods are described in this paper.
