The flow behavior of bubble-particle aggregates in separation tanks is important for many flotation systems, particularly for wastewater treatment. These aggregates can be considered as the dispersed phase in a continuous liquid phase of water and the flow characteristics determine the efficiency of the bubble separation process. In this work, a general methodology for the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of a bubble separation tank is described. This system is analyzed by Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. The momentum transfer from the dispersed phase to the continuous phase is quantified using the Particle-Source-In Cell (PSI-Cell) method. With CFD simulations, the effectiveness of different tank design parameters are evaluated in terms of the extent of bubble separation.

Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine is located in Papua, Indonesia operated by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) with approximately 1,500m below surface. The ore body extend 1230m width from northwest to southeast by 300–400m length east-west. The mine currently produces at full production of 80,000 tons per day until 2041. Part of the extension of current active production block and mitigation sits 225 m above the production block 1 (PB1) and 2 (PB2A and PB2B) which located in 2590L, named production block#4 (PB4W and PB4E). As the mining continues at PB1N, PB2A, and PB2B, the cave growth vertically and laterally to south perimeter of the footprint affecting the integrity of PB4W/E footprint. Currently, PB1N and PB2N are in active production whilst PB4E development continues from South against PB1N cave, as can be seen in Figure 1. A slight overlapping between PB1E and PB4E intentionally to promote cave connections between the two caves. Despite low stress model in the PB4E near existing caves, the PB4E cave propagation expected by the large strain and will be propagating in tension failure to the PB1E cave. Hence, designing the drill drives edge and first drawbell location as close as possible to the PB1E cave is necessary to guarantee cave connection. Since PB4 footprint development commenced in December 2021, there have been a substantial cave propagation observed from existing downhole monitoring. As the PB4 footprint designed perpendicular to existing DMLZ PB1 cave, adjustment of the development edge design is necessary to reflect the progression the loosening zone propagation to the South. Final life of mine design for extraction, undercut and ventilation level were decided in October 2023 considering latest update cave (fractured/ yielded) boundary. Numerical model of potential rock mass damage also aids the decision to locate the drift edge design. Predicting the cave progression impact is critical to both production at the existing active blocks and development of the new area. The use of cave shape data from year 2021–2023 gives an insight of the cave shape estimation at the end of 2024 when the undercut drift will be developed. This paper presents actual cave growth of active production blocks and its relative vertical progression impact as the result of drawing in order to plan for acceptable rate and provide mitigation once the minimum acceptable rock mass condition and minimum pillar threshold achieved.

The U.S. cement industry, including Puerto Rico, again set a record in terms of production and shipments. The increase in shipments came primarily from imports of portland cement as domestic production from produced and imported clinker gained only 1.9 Mt (2.1 million st). Clinker production as reported to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was 88.6 Mt (97.6 million st), an increase of 1 percent. Gray and white portland cement production from domestic and imported clinker, estimated at 93.5 Mt (103 million st), was up 1.9 Mt (2.1 million st). Masonry cement shipments of 5.5 Mt (6 million st), which equates closely to production, was up 6.3 percent. Blended ce-ment shipments were up 35.9 percent from 2004 at 2.35 Mt (2.6 million st).

Monitoring slope displacement in open-pit mines can help predict collapses and prevent serious damage, injuries, and fatalities. Early detection of movement may indicate the need to modify slope geometry, initiate dewatering if the slope is wet, or consider artificial support measures such as cable bolting. Slope monitoring at the Berkeley pit was carried out with varying degrees of intensity and continuity for about 15 years. Some of the old mine records are still intact and accessible. Slope monitoring data can therefore be collected and published for the benefit of other mine operators. Because prediction of slope failures is empirical in nature, publication of several well documented case studies will be a valuable contribution to the industry. Background - Berkeley pit Open-pit mining of copper from the Berkeley pit, located on the east side of Butte, MT, began in 1955 and ceased in 1982. During that time, about 1 Gt (1.2 billion st) of material were removed to form a pit about 1.8 km wide by 2.1 km long (6000 ft by 7000 ft) at the rim, and 550 m (1800 ft) deep as measured from the high hill on the northwest side. From the south side, the pit only measures 365 m (1200 ft) deep. The Berkeley pit was first owned and operated by Anaconda Minerals Co., and subsequently by Arco. Following its closure in April 1982, the mine began to fill with water. Washington Construction purchased the property in 1986, and Montana Resources Inc. began mining to the east of the Berkeley pit in July 1986. Numerous instances of slope failure were recorded during the course of mining and several intensive geotechnical investigations were conducted in an effort to optimize the mine design. One of the last and most comprehensive studies was initiated in 1977. For purposes of geotechnical analysis, the mine was divided into nine design sectors on the basis of geologic conditions, geographic orientation, and economic importance (Fig. 1). Only two of these sectors - the concentrator and the southeast corner - are considered here. Material properties were obtained from several studies of samples collected from the mine and adjacent areas. The Norwegian Lake Tap Method was successfully used to tap into the side of Lake Dorothy 36.5 m (120') below the lake surface. The lake tap allows water to flowinto an access tunnel from the lake lowering the water elevation below its natural out-fall. When the lake reaches a predetermined elevation below the outfall, a 1.5 m (60?) valve in the tunnel will be shut and discharge from Lake Dorothy will stop temporarily allowing construction of a dam located 2.9 km (1.8 miles) downstream at Bart Lake. The lake tap and tunnel were one phase of the $64 million Lake Dorothy Hydroelectric Project, owned and operated by Alaska Electric Light & Power Company (AEL&P), a private utility located in Juneau, AK. The Lake Dorothy portal site and tunnel are located approximately 25.7 km (16 miles) southeast of Juneau, AK, in the remote Tongass National Forest at an elevation of 701 m (2,300') above sea level in the mountains above the Taku Inlet. Thirty degree snow covered mountainsides and limited access by helicopter were just two of the many factors which challenged this unique project. The lake tap and tunnel development consisted of 250 m (820') of horizontal tun-nel, averaging 3.6 m x 3.6 m (12' × 12'), excavated using conventional drill and blast methods in highly competent Granodiorite and Tonalite rock, placement of one 3.9 m (13') long concrete plug, or bulkhead, located at the tunnel midpoint, and one 3 m (10') diameter lake tap into the side of Lake Dorothy. This paper will provide an analysis of the logistical and engineering challenges involved in the development of one of only a handful of lake taps in North America. AEL&P and contractor J. S. Redpath Corporation worked together to complete this critical project phase safely and on schedule, in a location accessible only by helicopter and plagued by constantly changing, harsh weather conditions. A strict schedule had to be maintained to ensure the timely operation of the downstream dam and power plant.

Perhaps the most significant development in China's base metal sector is the discovery of major copper porphyries in northern Jiangxi Province and the adjacent southern Anhui Province. At the center of the new exciting district is the proposed Dexing copper complex, located some 350 km east of Nanchang, the provincial capital of Jiangxi. This project represents China's first attempt to put together a major large-scale open-pit operation, comparable in magnitude to Arizona porphyry operations. With the aid of Fluor Mining and Metals, the Chinese plan to develop a 135-175 kt/d open-pit mine, a matching large-scale mill, and the infrastructure needed to accommodate the big operations. An operation of this magnitude would significantly reduce China's import requirements by some 75%. China imports of the red metal are running around 200 kt/a. Under the direction of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, the Chinese are currently operating a 10-kt/d mine and mill with equipment primarily of Chinese origin. Dexing engineers told ME that they are considering a possible scale-up to 20 kt/d. How this effort will ultimately jell with the major expansion program is largely a matter of conjecture. Fluor Mining and Metals received a $10-million contract in December 1978 to develop a preliminary engineering and design program. While the original plans called for a 175-kt/d capacity complex, the Chinese subsequently decided to scale it down somewhat. The current proposal is around a 135 kt/d, which would in- elude the existing operation, according to Dexing engineers. Completion of the engineering and design phase is expected by March 1980 and a go-ahead decision will likely be made at that time. The value of the engineering and construction contract is estimated between $800 million and $1 billion. At right, mined ore is dumped 150 m down the mountain to a holding pocket below for rail haulage to the processing plant. Below, a Chinese miner tackles the universal problem of hard toes in the pit with a jack leg. Reserves and Early History The Dexing mineralization consists of three principal ore bodies, including the Chushahung on the north mountain, and the Tungchang and Fuchiawu on the south mountain. Combined ore reserves are estimated by mine geologists at 1.7 Gt of 0.4-0.5% copper. As is characteristic of porphyries, the ore contains important associated values of molybdenum, rhenium, pyrite, gold, and silver. There is also some secondary calcocite and bornite with an oxidized capping. Historically, copper was recovered with iron from the pregnant solutions emanating from the Tungchang deposit as early as the Tang Dynasty (700 AD). Earl C. Herkenhoff Publication of the article "The Flotation Behavior of Digested Asphalt Ridge Tar Sands" by R.J. Smith and J.D. Miller has confirmed and again spotlighted a most significant and important development in the field of tar sand and heavy oil mining. This is the ability to recover 95 % of the bitumen in dry tar sands by a hot water process. The initial investigation by Miller and Sepulveda in early 1978, "Separation of Bitumen from Dry Tar Sands," was the first blockbuter. It is disappointing that there has been so little scientific and industry ackowledgement that the authors laid to rest the long entrenched belief that the sand grains had to be "water wetted" for a hot water process to be applicable. Dr. Miller and his researchers at the University of Utah used slightly different mineral dressing terminology in describing their process but it is essentially the old, established technique of high solids attrition scrubbing at elevated temperatures with a conditioner or modifier, followed by dilution and froth flotation. Similar techniques were described in detail for other nonmetallic minerals in the mid-1940s by Stuart Falconer of American Cyanamid Co. The authors used a 15-minute "scrub" period (or in their terminology "digester step") at 73% solids and 95°C (203°F) in a 0.3 m solution of sodium carbonate -about 4 kg/t (8 lb per st) of tar sand. Flotation was at 10% solids. Obviously, the scrub is an expensive step with respect to energy input but the high recovery of bitumen appears to justify it. Two basic questions then arise: • What are the effects of shorter scrubbing time, lower temperature, and less sodium carbonate? • Would a two-stage approach be advantageous? That is, could you get the major proportion of the bitumen with a mild scrub and apply the high power and temperature only to the refractory portion? These variables should be evaluated. Apparently, all results were only for rougher flotation. What would the grade and recovery of bitumen be if multiple cleaner flotation steps were employed? We must concede that a 60-62% grade of bitumen leaves considerable room for upgrading. Finally, it should be noted by all executives who approve funds for heavy oil recovery schemes, most of which are variations of in-situ methods, that mining can yield a 95% recovery of bitumen. That is correct, 95%. Imagine what that does to the total barrels recovered from a heavy oil resource compared with the scrawny 30-35% maximum recovery we are getting now. The conclusion-let's mine heavy oil and tar sands. Reply by R.J. Smith and J.D. Miller We, too, share Mr. Herkenhoff s enthusiasm for the mining of tar sands-heavy oil and continue the development of related processing technology. Specifically, it will be noted that by appropriate control of bitumen viscosity in the feed (probably the most important variable for successful separation) the recovery can be accomplished at low digestion temperature and low addition of alkali. A 91 t/d (100 stpd) pilot plant based on our technology is now being operated by Enercor in Salt Lake City (Hatfield, Oblad, and Miller, 1982). In these same pilot facilities, rougher concentrates containing more than 80% bitumen on a dry basis are being produced from Asphalt Ridge Feed. However, the processing of certain other tar sands results in incomplete digestion of bitumen/sand aggregates as discussed elsewhere (Miller and Misra, 1982). Such undigested aggregates are shown in Fig. 1. In this regard, it is intended that a recycle stream will be installed in the pilot plant to provide for redigestion of middling products. Higher production, better safety standard, and potential for automation are some of the benefits of longwall mining. Today, longwall face advances at a faster rate exposing many diversified rock layers in a short period of time. It is now a serious challenge to cope with ground control problems such as roof falls, face and floor failure, and excessive shield loading as fast as possible to minimize production and monetary losses. In Illinois coal mines, the existence of weak floor strata blow the coal seam may pose additional problems related to floor heaving, shield base punching, and associated roof and face falls. In this study, the effects of weak floor on longwall ground control are analyzed using two-dimensional finite element models. A two-leg 635.6-ton (700-short-ton) yielding capacity shield is included in the models to evaluate the effects of different thickness and material properties of the weak floor. The study indicates that the thickness and material properties of weak floor have significant effects on shield loading, the distribution and intensity of front abutment stress, failure zones in the surrounding strata, roof-to-floor convergence, and floor punching by the shield base.

Acid-Minesite-Solutions (AMS) are defined as copper-containing pit lake, tailing pond, acid-mine-drainage, and heap and waste dump irrigation solutions. All of these solutions are characterized by copper, acid and water contents that have value as individual commodities. HW Process Technologies, Inc. (HWPT) has developed nano- and hyper-filtration membrane methods for the separation of copper and other base metals, acid and water from AMS. These treatments are collectively called HWPT?s Engineered Membrane Separation® (EMS®) systems. The EMS® method of copper recovery produces small volumes of higher-concentration copper solution from large-volume, copper-dilute AMS. A case study of the 4,000 gpm Cananea EMS®-AMS plant for the recovery of copper from an acid-pit-lake resource is described. The EMS® method of copper removal from AMD and tails pond waters has been bench-scale demonstrated and are described, complete with projected budgetary capital and operating costs. Additional treatments for the recovery of sulfuric acid and high-quality water from the permeate (membrane passing) waters for the above-described AMS treatments are presented, with budgetary capital and operating cost estimates. "This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2014 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry.Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. current dollars provided by SNL Metals & Mining (SNL) of Charlottesville, VA; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2014 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources are used to develop these compilations, statistics may differ depending on the source and type of data that are being reported.The SNL data summarize planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2014 for 19 nonfuel mineral commodities based on company surveys. Research focused on precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (iron ore, phosphate and potash), and specialty mineral commodities (diamond, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements, tantalum and uranium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, rare-earth elements and tantalum were compiled for the first time in 2010 because of their increased significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL compilations. SNL budget estimates exclude bauxite, coal and oil and gas. Exploration budget estimates for iron ore have been compiled since 2011 but reported separately. The 2014 SNL company survey is reported by SNL to cover an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonferrous, nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that is not covered includes companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data, and government-funded exploration activities"

Recent NIOSH published information has shown an increase of rapidly progressive coal workers? pneumoconiosis (CWP) in the southern Appalachian coal region (SAR) of the U.S., despite the fact that compliance data indicates that most coal miners have been exposed to coal mine dust concentrations below the statutory limit of 2.0 mg/m³. While the exact cause of these elevated CWP levels in the SAR has not been established, several factors may be contributing to the increase in occupational lung disease among coal miners. The mining of high rank coal is known to lead to higher CWP rates, and this type of coal is mined in a portion of this region. Also, a high percentage of the mines in the region are on reduced dust standards because of the high silica content of the airborne dust resulting in miners possibly being exposed to excessive amounts of respirable silica dust. Exposure to excessive amounts of respirable silica dust can lead to silicosis, a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease. NIOSH's Respiratory Hazards Control Branch has been investigating the possible causes that would account for the observed higher trends in disease progression through literature review, data analysis, and in-mine surveying. The investigation to date has revealed that underground mines are faced with cutting large amounts of rock in order to maintain haulage clearances. Cutting rock not only increases the potential for silica exposure, it increases the requirement for machine maintenance which was a concern observed during dust surveys conducted by NIOSH. Over half of the mines operating in the SAR are on reduced standards due to high silica content. Adequate face ventilation of the continuous miner and roof bolter and limited down-wind operations from the miner are also issues of concern and items which require the constant attention of miners operating in these conditions. Industrialized countries, particularly the United States and the United Kingdom, remain at the forefront of international efforts to control the potential disruption from computer malfunctions caused by the date change from1999 to 2000 — widely known as the millennium bug or Y2K. Disruption is least likely in the developed world, including the United States, Canada, western Europe, Japan and Australasia. However, the picture is potentially different in developing countries where many mining companies operate. The less developed the country, the greater the chance of some form of Y2K-linked disruption.

Mine production crews and drill-and-blast crews may be exposed to unexpected movement of ground when working under pit slopes. Without specialist geotechnical advice and appropriate measurement systems, mine crews are faced with conducting risk assessments and relying on subsequent controls that may or may not be adequate to ensure their safety. Mine crews need an ?early warning? monitoring system to give them the confidence that they will have time to walk out of the danger zone if the pit slope begins to move. Slope stability radar technology is used by mine geotechnical engineers to assess overall slope stability over an extended period, typically days or weeks, and to critically monitor slopes that are actively moving and may become unsafe. The complexity of slope stability radar allows for geotechnical engineers to assess movement types and movement rates across multiple work areas of a mine from long ranges, with alarm capability to a central location. However there are many mine work areas where production and drill-and blast crews are not adequately covered or alarmed by slope stability radar systems. What is required is an easy-to-use, short-range, fast-scanning tool that can be operated directly by a work crew and can provide a local alarm with sufficient warning when a wall movement occurs within the work area. The Work Area Monitor (WAM) concept has been developed specifically to be operated by a mine production crew. The system comprises a sensitive, fast-scanning radar coupled with a high-resolution camera, built into a mine-standard light vehicle. The system has been designed specifically for ease of use with the output being a local area alarm to warn workers of slope movement in their vicinity, as opposed to the broader pit monitoring and long-term deformation measurements of the known slope stability radar systems.

Most mineral processes currently in use, such as flotation, spirals, gravity concentrators, etc., are only effective over a small range of sizes, hence the upstream need for technology to accurately classify fines by size. The Pansep’s design is revolutionary. Slurry is fed onto connected mesh sections that move without bending or vibration, in a circular motion. Both sides of the screen mesh are utilized, so Panseps are self-cleaning and has half the footprint of other mesh-type screens. Developed in South Africa in 1997, the Pansep has proved itself very effective as a wet fines screen to effectively classify fine mineral fractions from 50 to 2,000 micron (325 to 10 mesh).

Perfect combustion in an engine would produce only water vapor, carbon dioxide and nitrogen as by-products; however, complete combustion is never achieved. As a mobile power plant, the diesel engine is relatively inefficient in terms of energy produced from the energy potential of the fuel. The diesel is not a perfect engine. The fuel burned can undergo a very large number of reactions in the combustion chamber. It only stands to reason that a large number of compounds are contained in the exhaust, actually, thousands of chemicals. The exhaust can be broadly divided into a gaseous phase and a particulate phase. Each phase is made up of organic and inorganic compounds. The vapor phase contains carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, various oxides of nitrogen and many hydrocarbons. The particulate phase contains clusters of respirable inorganic particles made mostly of carbon. This paper will address the health hazards, as we know them today, of the major components of the particulate phase in the exhaust of diesel engines. It will briefly examine the operational factors of the diesel engine as it applies to particulate emissions. Longitudinal studies of occupationally exposed miners are needed with documentation of levels of exposure before a chronic effect of exposure can be determined. At this time, it is not possible to conclude from human studies the level of diesel exhaust exposure that results in the observed lung cancer risk.

Abstract-Since 1982, the US Bureau of Mines has inves¬tigated improvements in protection for operators of thin seam shuttle cars. Due to working height restrictions in thin seam mines (<_1.22 m or 48 in.). Federal mine regulations require that canopy protection on shuttle cars he provided only in mines >_1.07 m (42 in.). However, court obtained variances are granted to mines <_1.22 m (48 in). This paper presents ongoing research to design and evaluate a uniquely positioned, ergonomic compartment for a shuttle car that provides the operator with full canopy protection in working heights of 1.02 m (40 in.).

The Yanacocha project is the first foreign investment in Peruvian mining since Cuajone during 1976. Three years after the project began, it has become the largest producer of gold from heap-leach operations in the world and the top producer in Latin America. The success of Minera Yanacocha SA (MYSA) opens a new chapter in Peruvian mining with the exploitation of its widely spread gold deposits. And it has attracted the interest of foreign investors in Peru’s mineral resources. Construction began on Aug. 1, 1992. The first gold bar was poured on Aug. 7, 1993 from ore from the Carachugo Mine. During 1993, Minera Yanacocha produced 2.5 t (81,000 oz) of gold and 9.4 t (304,000 oz) during1994 (40% above budget). Production was expected to exceed 15.5 t (500,000oz) during 1995 with the start-up the Maqui Maqui Mine.

In the Florida phosphate industry, fatty acid collectors are used to separate phosphate ore from silica during the rougher flotation stage. However, the presence of multivalent ions (in particular Ca++) in the processing water has been reported to result in the activation of silica with respect to oleate adsorption, rendering it floatable. Hence, adequate separation may not be achieved during the rougher flotation stage. In this study, the direct measurement of surface inter-action forces via atomic force microscopy was used to delineate possible mechanisms for calcium activation under phosphate flotation conditions at oleate/calcium concentrations both above and below the calcium dioleate precipitation limit.

Novel dewatering aids were tested on various coal samples from the U.S. and Canada in laboratory and pilot-scale filtration experiments. The reagents substantially improved the dewatering kinetics and reduced the cake moistures. The cake moistures were typically reduced from 20-30% by weight to 8-14% range in vacuum filtration. When the reagents were used in conjunction with a pressure filter, higher degrees of moisture reductions were achieved. In the present work, the novel dewatering aids were tested using different types of pilot-scale vacuum filters. The results were consistent with those obtained in laboratory experiments.

Construction projects may be delivered under one contract package or multiple packages divided by discipline, geographic location, or other characteristics. Dividing the construction into contract bid packages is called contract packaging, and is a vital and strategic aspect of effectively delivering tunneling projects. The process of contract packaging considers many factors, including the type of project, location, and owner?s priorities. This paper describes the key facets of the contract packaging process used recently on several tunnel projects, reports, where possible, on the success of the process, and concludes with recommendations for applying this process to achieve the right contract package.
