"In my Presidential address last year `The Institute in Retrospect and Prospect', I briefly reviewed the past activities of our Institute, I commented on the dynamic growth of the mineral activity of this country and of the great contribution towards this growth made by members of this Institute. I maintained that there was still further growth to come, pointing out that our future would be very much dependent on the availability and skills of our mining and metallurgical men. This Institute had, therefore, a most important task ahead to ensure that this country would have the necessary skilled engineers to develop our mineral industry so that we would be able to compete successfully in the wide world. In my address I highlighted many of the major achievements of our members and of our Institute. In today's review, I have no wish to repeat myself and I would, therefore, ask members and visitors to regard this review as complementary to my presidential address. I must also refer you to the very full resume of our affairs written for a special brochure in March, 1944, by E. H. Johnson, a founder member, on the occasion of our 50th Anniversary. There is no need to repeat what was given there, rather I will attempt to bring that history up to date. Our Institute was founded under the name of Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa on 24th March, 1894, by a group of chemists and metallurgists The name was changed to Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa early in 1903, and in July, 1956 became The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. We were not the first technical organisation in South Africa, the S.A. Association of Engineers and Architects having been formed in 1892. In that year also the British Institution of Mining and Metallurgy started in London. The contribution made to the economy of South Africa by the-minerals industry is discussed according to four of its aspects. Firstly, the industry supports both students and lecturers in technical and academic institutions. This support covers virtually the whole range of courses available at the universities and technikons, although most is obviously devoted to the engineering and science faculties. Secondly, the industry makes a direct financial contribution to the State in that it contributes about40 per cent of the State's receipts from direct tax paid on incomes and 30 per cent of the contributions to the total State revenue. It provides employment for 28 per cent of the total active labour force, and contributes 24 per cent directly to the gross domestic product. Thirdly, the industry is responsible for over 65 per cent of the country's foreign earnings in spite of the significant rise in exports from the manufacturing sector. South African minerals are of crucial importance to the word, since the country has the world's largest reserves of seven minerals and features very prominently in many others. Finally, the industry makes an indirect contribution, referred to as the multiplier effect. This is the ripple effect on the economy made by a large injection of momey by which that money acquires an added effective value. A study made of the total production of the mining industry in 1978, for instance, showed this multiplier to havea value of 1,5. Thus, if this effect is included, the industry's contribution to the gross domestic product is 44,S per cent. Similarly, the industry is responsible for the creation of jobs both within itself and in other industries, which could amount to 100000 for the period 1981 to 1935.

The 8th Annual University of Cape Town (UCT)/ University of Stelenbosch (US) Minerals Processing Symposium was held at the Van Riebeeck Hotel in Gordon's Bay on 3rd August, 1990, under the auspices of the Western Cape Branch of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The primary object of this meeting was to give research students at UCT and US the opportunity to present their work to a critical audience from industry, and to obtain feedback regarding the research needs of the minerals industry. Although the emphasis of these symposia is on work in progress at US and UCT, they also create an excellent opportunity for informal discussion between academics and metallurgists in industry. The first symposium in this series was held in 1982 at US, while the symposium in 1989 was replaced by the International Colloquium on Developments in Froth Flotation, also held in Gordon's Bay.

From 19 November 1996, South African companies will be able to manage the impact their activities have on the environment in terms of international standards. The establishment of a registration scheme for environmental management systems was formally announced by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) (19 November 1996). At a function held at the SABS head office in Pretoria, Dr Jean du Plessis, President of the SABS, announced the launch of the SABS ISO 14001 registration scheme which is based upon ISO 14001, 'the internationally recognized yardstick for environmental management'.

A simplified two-dimensional plane strain numerical technique for the non- linear modelling of a tabular mining excavation in brittle host rock under high stress conditions is described. The model has been developed using relatively straightforward assumptions based on extensive underground investigation of the fracturing and deformation of rock at the stope face in deep gold mines on the Witwatersrand, together with observed rock behaviour under laboratory conditions. The reef rock is modelled as a linear string of yielding elements which interact horizontally, while the elastic rockmass remote from the reef is modelled using boundary element techniques. This elementary technique is shown to produce results which agree closely with the observed behaviour of the fractured rock during the mining of a remnant pillar

[ ] Great Basin Gold Ltd. (GBG) owns the Hollister Mine and operates it through the wholly owned subsidiary Rodeo Creek Gold, Inc. The property is located in northern Nevada on the Carlin Trend gold belt within the historic Ivanhoe Mining District. The mine is located on the western edge of the Northern Nevada Rift, a major north-northwest trending structural zone that has localized middle Miocene volcanic rocks and numerous epithermal gold deposits. The precious metal deposits are low-sulfidation epithermal systems characterized by banded quartz veins with electrum and silver selenides. The Hollister Mine will employ the selective underground mining method of cut and fill. This will be combined with split shooting (resuing mining method) to optimize recovery and reduce dilution. The focus of mining will be on extraction of ?ounces? from the narrow-veins rather than trying to maximize tons. The initial drifts will be excavated along the strike of the vein and then capped with a substantial concrete sill pillar. Back stoping with hand held drills will be used to selectively mine the vein. The stopes will be backfilled with waste rock material. With every lift, an 18 inch concrete cap will be poured onto the backfill waste rock to prevent gold values from being lost into the fill. Targeted ore production rate will be over 400 tons per day. With current ore reserves, project life is estimated to be around eight years; however, Hollister geologists view the site as one of the most prospective systems for bonanza vein deposits in Nevada. Ingot casting and wire drawing In Iron Age Southern Africa by R. H. STEEL (Visitor) This paper describes the experiments that were conducted in 1974/1975 on two related aspects of Iron Age copper technology in Southern Africa: ingot casting and wire drawing. Three types of ingot were successfully cast: the St Andrew's Cross ingot, the marale ingot, and the musuku. It is suggested that the 'studs' on the musuku are not the remains of broken-off rods as previously proposed by other investigators, but that the ridged pattern is an ornamental feature. Copper wire was successfully drawn with similar tools and according to the procedures described in the literature on African Iron Age wire drawing. It is concluded that these accounts are generally accurate and that the pre-European metal workers are worthy of respect for the results they achieved with primitive methods.

A simple argument shows that it is impossible for the flight of a rod in contact with a litter bar in a rotary mill to be initiated at that point on the upside of mill rotation when all the forces acting on the rod are in equilibrium. The argument was confirmed experimentally in a study showing that the lift of litter bars is a function of their height, that the rod velocity at the point of departure has a significant radial component, and that the subsequent flight of a rod is along a parabolic trajectory as predicted by elementary mechanics. A quantitative account of the observed effects, which is based on a dynamic theory of the sliding interaction between rods and litter bars, revealed interesting properties of the motions of rods down the surfaces of litter bars when the latter are in uniform circular motion during the rotation of a mill.

Geological and geotechnical data are essential for the design of tunnels. To determine the rock mass behavior and the support of a planned tunnel excavation a consistent method for rock mass characterization and excavation and support determination has been developed. Probabilistic data processing with analytical methods is used for the quantification of the procedure and allows an evaluation of the applicability and the technical risk of different excavation and support methods. The sensitivity of the procedure on selected input parameters is highlighted in a parametric study. Finally an application of the procedure illustrates the use of the described method of probabilistic excavation and support determination for tunnels. Des données géologiques et géotechniques sont décisives pour la planification d’un tunnel. Pour la détermination du comportement des strates, le choix du soutènement et de la méthode de progression une description compréhensible de la montagne a été développée. À l'aide d'un traitement de données probabiliste, la procédure proposée est transposée quantitative sur une base de méthodes analytiques. De cette manière l'évaluation des méthodes de construction et la détermination du risque technique deviennent possibles. La sensitivité de la procédure de différents paramètres d'entrée est représentée dans une étude de paramètre. Pour finir, l'application de la procédure décrite est montrée à l’aide d'un cas pratique. Geologische und geotechnische Daten sind entscheidend für die Planung von Tunnels. Für die Ermittlung des Gebirgsverhaltens und der Festlegung von Ausbruch und Stützung wurde ein nachvollziehbarer Ablauf der Gebirgsbeschreibung entwickelt. Mit Hilfe von probabilistischer Datenverarbeitung auf Grundlage analytischer Methoden wird die vorgeschlagene Prozedur quantiativ umgesetzt. Dadurch werden die Bewertung von Baumethoden und die Ermittlung des technischen Risikos ermöglicht. Die Sensitivität des Verfahrens von einzelnen Eingangsparametern wird in einer Parameterstudie dargestellt. Abschließend wird anhand eines Beispiels die Anwendung des beschriebenen Verfahrens gezeigt.

The fifth University of Cape Town (UC1)/University of Stelenbosch (US) Minerals Processing Symposium was held at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Stelenbosch on Friday, 8th August, 1986. This series was initiated in 1982, the symposia being held alternately in Cape Town and Stelenbosch. The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy has kindly agreed to sponsor this event for the next three years. Cokemaking On the initiative of the European Cokemaking Commitee, the First International Cokemaking Congress will be held in Essen (F.R. Germany) from 13th to 19th September, 1987. It is being organized by the Steinkohlenbergbauverein, together with the Verein Deutscher Eisenhitenleute.

Various methods for the beneficiation of minus 0,5 mm coal are examined briefly, and tests are described on a cyclone of 150 mm diameter operating with magnetite as the medium. It was found that, for sharp separations, at least 50 per cent of the magnetite should be finer than 1Oµm. At that size, the ash content of the product was about 7 per cent at yields of 59 to 64 per cent, and the loss of medium was reasonable (about I kg per ton of fines treated).

Scheduling the extraction and rates of production for an underground mining operation is a common task carried out during the life of a mine, from the initial feasibility study through to the final production phase. The scheduling process can be complex when several requirements have to be satisfied, for example, match mill capacity and maximize net present value while constrained by mining sequence and availability of resources. Many mines have computer programs relevant to their operation but because they are site-specific they need considerable reprogramming to be adapted to other operations. Other methods currently in use also suffer drawbacks: manual spreadsheets are laborious, computerized spreadsheets cannot handle sufficient constraints, and operations research techniques require a complex mathematical model to be set up. The use of network analysis techniques has been proposed previously but the unavailability, until recently, of easily used computer programs has not allowed this approach to be developed. There are now many programs which can be used; however, the particular program which has been adapted to mine scheduling is Metier's 'Artemis-PC' running on IBM-XT or compatible machine. The use of network analysis offers many advantages, including the use of a logical mining sequence; activities can be as detailed as required; related activities can be readily incorporated, and costs can be easily extracted. A heuristic approach is necessary to optimize the schedule, but the ease and speed of program execution enables this to be readily achieved, while leaving the mining engineer in full control. The paper discusses the problems encountered in mine scheduling and current solutions. It then details the use of network analysis techniques and the application of the Artemis-PC program to solve mine scheduling problems.

Mining-metallurgical complex is the base of any economics and influences directly on practically all branches of world economics. Therefore the task of estimation and selection of investment decisions in mining industry adequate to modern market conditions and the task of decreasing multidimensional alternatives selection uncertainty are very actual. An uncertainty of investment alternatives is explained by a number of reasons, main of which are a presence of several investors types, an unstable situation on the market and an absence of evident relations between appraisal criteria used. Maximum increasing of formalization and objectivity of information technologies applied for an estimation permits to reduce the uncertainty of investment variants estimation. A number of principled innovations, allowing to solve the task of decreasing of multidimensional alternatives selection uncertainty, are introduced into the information technology of estimating and selecting investment decisions in mining-metallurgical branch, developed by us. In the article the necessity of including a cognitive model into developed selection mechanism, which allows to take into consideration inter-influences of used critera, has been grounded. Besides, the forecasting model considering interconnected time rows has been applied for increasing the world conjuncture forecast quality. Further in the article main metrics types have been characterized and application of weighted Chebyshev’s metrics as the most compromised from all studied metrics for variants selecting has been proved, and also the developed procedure of directional search of effective compromise decisions has been described. Brief characteristic of designed instrumental means of multi-criteria variants estimation and selection finalizes the article. In conclusion expedience and efficiency of using the developed information technology for reduction of multidimensional alternatives selection uncertainty have been grounded.

It is a great honour to officiate at the celebration of the centenary of the South African Institute of Mining and Metalurgy. Tonight's festivities bring back happy memories of my association with South Africa's mining industry during my tenure of office as Minister of Mineral and Energy Affairs. They also remind me of the illustrious personalities who have preceded me on this podium. The Pioneers They include Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, who spoke in 1909 on the eve of the Union, General Smuts, and, on many occasions during the 1920s and 1930, Jan H. Hofmeyr. The basic issues addressed by them continue to enjoy the Institute's attention today, namely the optimal and safe exploitation of our country's mineral resources and cost-effective extraction of minerals from their ores. Translated into the Institute's key objective it reads: To initiate and give effect to the means whereby the requirements for technology and scientific knowledge if the minerals and metals section if the South African economy is satisfied.

Mechanical and fatigue tests were used to determine whether the coating was suitable for turbine-disc applications. The data on heat stroke cases reported during the past five years were examined to determine the influence of age on the incidence of heat stroke. Relating the age distribution of these cases to that of the total number of Bantu mine workers showed clearly that the older men run a significantly higher risk of developing heat stroke than the younger men. Although the number of Bantu over 40 years of age in the industry is less than 10 per cent of the total they nevertheless accounted for 50 per cent of the fatal heat stroke and 25 per cent of the nonfatal heat stroke cases during the period under review. Age must, therefore, be recognised as a causal factor in heat stroke and the worker over 40 years of age should be allocated to work on surface, or in cool areas or to non-strenuous and supervisory tasks in hot areas.

The need for the more accurate measurement of blasting results has increased substantially with the proliferation of the types of explosives available to mining operations in South Africa. The primary object of blasting is the production of broken rock of a specific size distribution. A method for the measurement of size distribution, more popularly known as fragmentation, is being developed at Sishen Iron Ore Mine, and the object of this paper is to describe the method briefly and so encourage an exchange of views on reliable methods. Once the fragmentation of broken rock can be assessed reliably, meaningful conclusions can be drawn from blasting trials. It will then be possible for equipment productivity to be related to muckpile properties, with the accompanying advantages.

The behaviour of mild steel in aqueous cyanide solutions similar to caustic cyanide elution solutions was investigated at high temperature in electrochemical experiments. The anodic polarization diagrams of mild steel indicated that steel may undergo active dissolution under these conditions. The rare occurrence of gold plating in practice is the result of the limiting of the anodic dissolution of the steel by the presence of a passive layer on the steel. This passive layer is stable only in a certain potential range, and the free corrosion potential attained determines whether the steel will be passive or active. For conditions typical of elution columns, several corrosion potentials are possible, depending primarily on the initial condition of the steel and the concentration of oxygen in the solution. If these conditions result in the formation of a passive layer on the steel, changes in concentration and temperature will not necessarily result in plating since the layer may exist in a metastable form.

A method of evaluating the possible effect of an industry on the environment is presented, and the method is illustrated by its application to a hypothetical problem. An analysis is offered based on an actual survey of four industrial sites in the Lydenburg area of the eastern Transvaal. The survey showed that there is a high incidence of potentially unfavourable conditions, and there is a distinct possibility that a topographically induced eddying motion will extend over the town and the industrial sites. This moving air could entrap air pollutants, resulting in high concentrations of pollutants over the town. It is concluded that none of the sites is suitable for industries that pollute the atmosphere.
