The kinetics of the reduction of chromite from the LG-6 layer of the Bushveld Complex in Fe-Cr-C alloys were studied in the temperature range 15OO°C to 1680°C under an inert argon atmosphere. The rotating cylinder technique was used, and the rotational speed of the chromite cylinder ranged from 0 to 1000 r/min. The melt consisted of 30 to 80 per cent chromium and 2 to 8 per cent carbon. The initial chromium-te-iron ratios of the melts varied between 0,42 and 4,95. The reduction of chromite spinel was analysed in terms of the decarburization of the metal. It was found that decarburization increased with an increase in the temperature, the carbon content of the bath, and the rotational speed of the cylinder up to 400 r/min, after which it remained almost constant. Decarburization also increased with an increase in the chromium content up to about 50 per cent chromium but, at higher chromium contents, it decreased. In the early stage of the reduction, up to about 30 minutes of reaction time, the liquid-state mass transfer of oxygen was found to be the most likely rate-determining step. The apparent activation energy was calculated to be 84,864 kJ per mole of oxygen. In the later stage, diffusion of iron and/or chromium in the solid state is the most likely rate-determining step. The apparent activation energy for the diffusion was calculated to be 471,18 kJ/mol.

A description is given of the extraction of pillars in a seam of coal which normally varies in thickness from 10 feet to 14 feet using conventional trackless mechanised units. By using the pocket and fender method of pillar extraction, the high capital cost of hydraulic supports is eliminated, and a volumetric extraction of 85% to 90% of the seam of coal is possible. This method of mining opens up the possibility of extracting vast tonnages of coal which hitherto would have been left in situ as pillars. The major benefits likely to accrue from this technique are seen as follows: 1. Greater volumetric extraction of the seam; 2. Longer panel life with less frequent transferring of sections; 3. Preservation of our natural resources. The authors deal with the history of this development at Springfield Colliery, discuss the present results and outline the future trends in the light of current experience.

Significant political and economic changes have taken place in our society in the past year that are going to impact on our minerals industry, and therefore also on our members. Surely, it is not coincidence that the economic and political changes have occured simultaneously? South Africa, by virtue of its infrastructure and technology, is strategically placed to develop the potential of Africa's mineral wealth. In this address, I give my personal views on the ability of the mining industry to participate in the wider mineral resources of the African continent.

Professor R.F. Sandenbergh matriculated at Germiston Afrikaans High School, and then he obtained the degrees of B.Eng. (Chem.) in 1972, M.Eng. (Chem.) in 1975, and D.Eng. (Met.) in 1983-all from the University of Pretoria. Mr J.A.D. Britz matriculated in 1958 at the Roodepoort Hoerskool, and joined the mining industry in 1959 as a student mine official at the Rand Mines Training Centre. Mr J.A. Cruise matriculated at Durban High School and joined Union Corporation as a Learner Official in 1962. Commissioning of the Cannington processing plant began in October 1997. The nameplate capacity (of 1.55 million tonnes of ore per annum) was achieved relatively quickly. Since then (like many mines) the operation has strived to increase throughput and improve valuable metal recoveries, to offset declining head grades and lift the value of the operation. The processing plant now has the capability of treating over 3.2 million tonnes of ore per annum and in financial year 2005/06 the combined concentrate production exceeded 600 000 wet tonnes, approximately 80 per cent above concentrate output in the first full year of operation (at the design feed rate). This improved performance was achieved by making changes and additions to each of the major unit processes - primary grinding, flotation, leaching, filtering and paste fill preparation. The changes have included: adding a fines flotation circuit, expanding the grinding circuit, adding a pebble crusher, switching from continuous to batch leaching, building paste conveyors and decommissioning the column flotation cleaning circuits. This paper reviews these changes, outlines the current operating practices and discusses the challenges or opportunities that remain.

The literature on shotcrete is reviewed with the object of identifying aspects that have not been addressed specifically in terms of its structural performance and manufacture as applied to underground mines. The programme and results of a series of full-scale tests on mesh- and fibre-reinforced shotcrete panels are presented, from which it is concluded that fibre-reinforced shotcrete is competent, especialy at large deformations, and is equivalent in structural performance to mesh-reinforced shotcrete for a fibre content of 3 per cent by mass: furthermore, that the support design systems developed for mesh-reinforced shotcrete are directly applicable to fibre-reinforced shotcrete. The Q-NATM system for the design of temporary tunnel support is presented briefly as one such system. It provides for the integrity of the excavation to be considered in terms of its competence and displacement determinateness, and represents the first systematic procedure for the design of temporary tunnel support. Finally, the support designed on the basis of the Q-NATM system for the main and cross-cut tunnels on the production level in the proposed BA5 block cave at Premier Mine is presented as a practical example of the design of fibre-reinforced shotcrete as part of an overall support system.

Stress analysis in a rock medium is essential to determine the stress concentration between two consecutive circular holes and prediction of fracture behaviour. When two consecutive circular holes in a hard rock medium such as granite are loaded internally by the pressure of non-explosive expansion material (NEEM), stress concentration occurs between the holes which then causes the rock to fracture. In this work, finite element (FE) analysis using Phase2 code was employed to study the stress concentration between two consecutive circular holes under internal pressure induced by NEEM. Effects of different hole diameters and spacings, rock properties and NEEM pressures have been analysed. The data gained from the numerical analysis and analytical solutions were then used to develop two models. These models were then modified by using the FE data and polynomial regression analysis. The developed analytical models showed to be in a very good agreement with the FE analysis. Hence, the developed models can be used with confidence to determine stress distribution and concentration factors around two consecutive circular holes in a hard and brittle rock which are loaded internally by the pressure induced from the NEEM. Additions of boron have been found to increase the hot workability of stainless steels. Boron forms complex chromium-iron borides, primarily at grain boundaries but also on delta-ferite stringers. This paper describes how a nuclear technique based on the track-etch method was used to distinguish between borides and chromium carbides on grain boundaries and to investigate the distribution of boron in stainless steels. The method was found to be sensitive for boron, and made it possible for boron precipitates to be identified on grain boundaries and interphase boundaries.

Backfilling is one of the options available to the mining engineer in mine design. The decision as to the type of backfill is dependent on the purpose for which it will be used. For example, in a situation where high-grade, steeply dipping multiple reefs are to be mined, the purpose would be the following: ? to facilitate maximum extraction; a ? to minimize loss of fines; ? to allow closely spaced multiple reefs to be mined; and a ? to create a working platform. The physical properties required which will satisfy the abovementioned requirements can then be defined; the design of the fill plant, as well as the transport of the fill, will be governed by these considerations. The same procedure is also adopted in deciding on backfill in single- reef gold mines. The first question to be asked is the purpose of the fill. It may be to reduce the energy release rate, for environmental reasons, to reduce timber usage, to improve productivity, to reduce stoping costs, to obtain higher mining extraction, and so on. Only after one, or a combination, of these factors has been selected, can the specifications for the fill be decided on, and the plant designed accordingly. The introduction of backfill at Sheba Gold Mine will be used to illustrate the procedure adopted by Anglovaal in determining the type of fill required.

The following contributions were received to the paper entitled 'Safety in South African mines: An analysis of accident statistics', by H.S. Eisner and J.P. Leger, which appeared in the J. S. Afr. Inst. Min. Metal., vol. 88, no. 1, Jan. 1988, pp. 1-7. Contribution by H. WAGNER* The paper by Dr H.S. Eisner and Mr J.P. Leger is critical of the safety situation on South African mines and portrays the industry as having little concern for the health and safety of its workers. Moreover, the casual reader gains the impression of deliberate misinformation by the industry to the public concerning safety maters. Furthermore, certain socio-economic reasons are advanced for the apparent differences between the fatality and injury rates reported for coal mines in South Africa and those for the United Kingdom. Contribution by S.A. WATTS. Authors Eisner and Leger are to be commended on their paper, which highlights, according to their interpretation, various shortcomings of both the Chamber of Mines accident statistics and those published by the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs. The structural design of a pavement relates to the ability of the road to carry the imposed loads without the need for excessive maintenance or rehabilitation. Current techniques for the structural design of haulage roads are empirical and based primarily on the previous experience of personnel assigned to pavement design, both in terms of the strength of the structure and the quality of the wearing course material. This has the potential for unwarranted expenditure on too thick a structure or, conversely, premature deformation leading to the need for excessive expenditure on maintenance. Furthermore, the effect of larger haulage vehicles on the structural performance of a pavement cannot be predicted. Thus, there is a need to develop a portable and practical method of structural design. This paper presents an overview of structural design methods for mine haulage roads and, through an analysis and quantification of the structural performance of existing pavements, recommends the mechanistic design procedure, together with a revised structural design and associated limiting design criteria. It is concluded that the application of the mechanistic method to a design project can reduce the costs of haulage roads construction and accrue additional benefit in terms of reduced operating and maintenance costs.

The relationships between mill power and pebble load, bulk density of the load, and circulating load were investigated on the pebble mills in the grinding circuit at Buffelsfontein Gold Mine. This paper describes the most significant relationships among the operating and control variables on the plant, and illustrates these by reference to experimental data gathered from the plant during operation. The results were used for the development of very successful multivariable peak-seeking controllers for the pebble load and bulk density of the load on these pebble mills. The peak-seeking control algorithms are described in detail. The control system has operated successfully at Buffelsfontein for more than 18 months and is still in operation.

The ISRM Suggested Methods are very important documents in this regard, and a draft suggested method exists for the determination of the ’complete stress-strain curve for intact rock in uniaxial compression’. The method specifies the required geometry of specimens and the required testing procedures. The research described in this paper involved the determination of complete stress-strain curves for two materials, one exhibiting the Class I characteristic, and the other the Class II characteristic. To obtain a better understanding of the deformation behaviours in the post-peak region, tests were carried out on specimens of both material types with different length-to-diameter ratios. The results showed that the geometries of the test specimens influence the stressstrain curves in the post-peak region. The implication is, therefore, that the numerical values obtained for the slopes of the post-peak graphs are not material constants, but are geometry-dependent. Explanations for this behaviour are given. These findings have important implications regarding the use of post-peak data, for example for blast fragmentation considerations, and for evaluation of rockbursting potential. The research findings are based on a limited amount of laboratory testing, and should be confirmed by further testing. IntroductionThe most common approach for studying the behaviour of rock is by compression testing of cylindrical specimens in the laboratory. Rocks respond to forces by deforming and eventually breaking. The strength and the deformation characteristics are derived from the stressstrain curves produced. Standard shapes and sizes for the test specimens and standard loading rates are recommended in the Suggested Methods of the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. In spite of these standards, there remain certain aspects of testing which require further attention. The research described in this paper deals with deformation and failure behaviour of rock materials using stiff, servocontrolled testing equipment. The particular objective was to test the premise that the behaviour of cylindrical rock specimens in the post-peak region of the stress-strain curves does not reflect only a material characteristic, but is influenced by the height-to-diameter ratio (the geometry) of the rock specimen. An additional objective was to investigate the effect of the stiffness of the test equipment on the outcomes of tests."

The hydraulic transportation of relatively dense slurries for backfill purposes is typically carried through vertical and horizontal pipelines under gravity. Wear in backfill pipelines has become such a major problem that it is now one of the main reasons for the relatively slow build-up of placed backfill in spite of encouraging performance results in the gold-mining industry. This paper describes tests on pipeline wear that were carried out on classified tailings from the backfill plant at Vaal Reefs East. The testwork was carried out under various conditions of slurry relative density, slurry velocity, and pipeline diameter. Empirical relationships are presented for each transportation and pipeline parameter evaluated and, finally, overall relationships between pipeline conditions and transportation parameters are proposed.

On Friday, 6th June, 1986, an SAIMM party of32 set out at 06h30 for a tour of Duvha Opencast Colliery, Lesedi Village, and Duvha Power Station-all situated just outside Witbank. Duvha Colliery On arrival at the mine, the party was met by Mr. Colin Kolver, Assistant General Manager, and the guides for the morning. After refreshments had been served, Mr. MacDonald, General Manager, welcomed the tour, and a series of slides on the opencast mine and Lesedi Village were shown.
