The calculation of resource volumes for large mineral sands deposits is the process of systematically compiling all known data in order to define the volume of ore contained and its intrinsic economic value. Traditionally, this process has been highly speculative in nature, as the variability of the layer thickness, even between closely spaced, boreholes can be highly variable. The issue of horizon continuity is of critical importance in mine modelling and resource definition. Accurate volume estimates are difficult to derive from drilling data alone, as the borehole spacing of an economically viable drilling programme is often greater than the spatial frequency of the variations in profile thickness. The limitations associated with this inferential approach to resource estimation can be mitigated through the use of newly developed ground penetrating radar (GPR) methods, thereby maximizing orebody optimization by reducing contamination and orebody loss. The use of GPR in the mining industry has historically been limited to shallow, high-resolution applications, such as the location of voids in limestone or the mapping of paleo channels for alluvial gold and diamonds (Francke and Yelf, 2003). These limitations have not been technology based, but rather market based, as the vast majority of GPR systems were originally designed for civil engineering applications. A new generation of GPR technology, designed specifically for maximum penetration in sand environments, is now being developed. This technology has been trialled extensively at the Richards Bay Minerals heavy mineral sand deposit in South Africa with optimistic results. The clay base of the mineral sands has been imaged to some 120 metres. Further equipment refinements are expected to yield even deeper profiling and higher resolution. The resolution offered by this technology is unique, allowing individual depositional sequences to be imaged and modelled in three dimensions. This paper will discuss the advances in GPR technology relevant to the mineral sands industry, as well as methods to optimize and integrate GPR data into existing mine models. Also addressed will be approaches to three-dimensional modelling of high-resolution GPR data and subsequent volume estimations.

In order to obtain a more suitable separation medium for fine coal, in this paper a pulsed fluidised bed was used to measure the pressure fluctuation, density characteristics, bubble diameter and rising velocity of Geldart A and B particles in the bed by controlling the pulsation frequency and gas velocity, in order to study the fluidisation effect and two-phase distribution of the bed. The results indicated that with the increase of pulsation frequency, the breakthrough point on the fluidisation characteristic curve caused by particle adhesion disappeared, and there was an optimal frequency, which made the minimum fluidisation velocity of particles reach the minimum. In addition, the bubble rising velocity was also simulated. The relationship between them was established using a model, and the error was within 5%. This provides an effective way to predict the bubble velocity, study the distribution of bubble phase, and improve the stability of bed density. Low-grade, complex mineral deposits have resulted in the need for complicated large-throughput processing plants delivering increased productivity, reliability, and utilization, together with reducing operational costs. Complex mineralogy has resulted in complicated process flow sheets designed to recover minerals as efficiently as possible. In addition, the remote location of many minerals¬-processing plants, continuously rising energy costs, and fierce competition pose significant challenges to the modern mine, compounded by a global scarcity of qualified and experienced operational personnel. Over the last decade the Internet and automation technologies have undergone major advancements. Automation technologies, solutions, and concepts that existed, but were considered risky or unreliable prior to the year 2000, have now gained acceptance and matured. Furthermore, new technologies and different collaboration schemes have appeared, offering innovative solutions to the mining industry to address many of the challenges described. These advancements in reliable remote systems that access technology through the Internet provide significant opportunity to support mining operations, enhance process performance, provide engineering services, and proactively anticipate and execute maintenance services. This paper references a global survey of automation trends in the mining industry and the potential for an intelligent collaborative environment using automation technologies to exploit opportunities in operating the plant of the future, increasing effectiveness, and reducing operational costs. A variety of possibilities are described, including asset management solutions, remote access capabilities, performance monitoring solutions, advanced process control technologies, and the formation of an intelligent collaborative environment. A real example where this technology is used to support the operation and maintenance at a cement plant in Egypt is given to underpin the concepts described in this paper.

Contributions to discussion V. E. Marting (Associate Member): The authors of this paper should be congratulated in having pioneered the application of the Sharapov predictor to local data, and in having made a valuable contribution to South African experience in the quantitative treatment of geological information using a digital computer. Although the existing set of three programmes has been described as a 'suite' it does not represent an integrated system in the accepted sense since the communication between runs is made in the form of punched card files to enable the mining engineer to exercise discretion and control over the data entered at each phase. Although the authors are justifiably proud of the successful results obtained through the application of this method, I feel that it is my duty to comment that the computer aspect of the work has not reached full development and is deserving of the financial support needed to increase its widest usefulness. At the present moment a routine to detect 'missing information' has not been commissioned. Due to the lack of documentation the use of the programmes is restricted since the format for the submission of data is known only to the authors. It is very unlikely that a profitable return on the development costs will be enjoyed before the programme is fully documented and made available to wider use. My criticism of the present incomplete state of the work is being voiced purely with the intent of focussing on the significance of this project and the fact that it is deserving of development on an industry basis. It should be noted that at the economical cost of R4.00 per sq ft of computer print-out, a mining engineer can hardly afford to miss the opportunity of using the programmes on other (e.g. metalliferous) mineral deposits of tabular formation. Since the publication of this paper I have had an opportunity to see the results of the programmes developed by Drs M. D. G. Salamon and F. Deist for designing bord and pillar workings. The basic data for these latter programmes are extracted from iso-line plans drawn conventionally by geologists, a task that could be considerably expedited through the use of Mr Hawkins' programmes. It appears that the efforts of these respective teams are complementary and it is in the interests of the industry that these individual components should eventually form part of an integrated system. Margo* (Member): This paper is a good example of how and where the backroom scientist-in this case the mathematical statistician-can aid the mining engineer to develop not only more accurate means for dealing with valuation problems but to develop a tool that can also cope with changed geological specifications.

I have read with interest all the papers dealing with heat transfer and the setting of heat stress limits that have appeared during the past two decades. Scientifically speaking, most of them can be rated as being of a high standard, and some of them have been acclaimed internationally as masterpieces of logical and calculated reasoning. Samples (15 to 20 g) of pre-calcined Mamatwan manganese ore or pure Mn 304 smaller than 48 mesh were reacted at temperatures in the range 1000 to 1300°C with samples of spectrographically pure graphite smaller than 325 mesh. Samples (1 g) of ore or pure Mn02 smaller than 48 mesh were reacted at temperatures of 1000 and 1200°C with pure graphite fines in argon, with graphite in carbon, .'1onoxide, and with carbon monoxide alone. In each case, the loss of mass as a function of time was recorded with a hermobalance. The rate and degree of reduction were found to increase with additions of carbon and with increasing temperature up to 1300oC, when they reached their maximum. The shape of the reduction curves, together with the results obtained from examination of the products of reaction by microscopy and X-ray diffraction, were used as the basis for a postulated reduction mechanism. Some details are given of an initial kinetic model that was used to verify the proposed mechanism. It was found that the reduction of Mamatwan ore by graphite at temperatures in the range 1000 to 1300°C occurs in two stages: (i) an initial stage during which the higher oxides of manganese are rapidly reduced to MnO with concurrent formation of CaMn2O4 and (ii) a longer stage during which CaMn2O4 and MnO are reduced to carbides by carbon dissolved in the ferromanganese phase.

The techniques used in this study of the non-oxidative dissolution rates of high- and Iow-grade nickel mattes in hydrochloric acid involved leaching and the use of a rotating ring-disc electrode. It was found that the rate of metal dissolution depends on the potential at which the matte dissolves, a maximum rate of dissolution being observed at -0,2 V to 0,3 V (relative to a saturated calomel electrode). The results are comparable with those obtained in work on the dissolution of synthetic nickel and iron sulphides. The adverse effect of excess sulphur on the rate of nonoxidative dissolution is explained in terms of the mixed potential of the reaction. The leaching studies showed the feasibility of processing a high-grade nickel matte by non-oxidative dissolution, and indicate that maximum rates can be obtained in the presence of fairly Iow concentrations of oxidant. A relative selective dissolution of iron can be obtained from the Iow-grade matte under reducing conditions, thus resulting in a significant upgrading of this material. Skorpion Zinc is located 25 km north-west of the small settlement of Rosh Pinah in southern Namibia. Commissioned in early 2003, Skorpion Zinc became the first mine-to-metal operation to commercially apply a purely hydrometallurgical process route to exploit a zinc oxide orebody. The novel technology, known as The Modified ZincexTM Process patented by Tecnicas Reunidas, comprises sulphuric acid atmospheric leaching, zinc solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) to produce London metal exchange (LME) Special high grade (SHG) zinc. Forming the core of the process, the SX step has thrived in its role as a barrier to impurities and also in the upgrading of the pregnant liquor solution (PLS), converting it into a loaded electrolyte (LE) sufficiently rich and pure for EW. Against this successful run, a number of challenges have, however, been encountered in SX due the emergence of upset conditions largely emanating from upstream processes. This paper outlines some of the major deviations that have beset the SX process in its first five years of continuous operation. Impurity excursions, temperature depressions, changes in phase continuity, excess aqueous entrainment, the effect of colloidal silica and the accumulation of rare earth elements on the organic phase will be discussed in detail. THAIN* Pre-European gold mining and working in South Africa is a tantalizing field for conjecture. Well over thousand sites have been identified in Rhodesia, but here we have had to reach double figures, judging by published accounts. Geologically, the Transvaal is less amenable primitive exploitation, but it difficult to reject the idea that the knowledge gained to the north did not have its influence south of the Limpopo.

High-temperature phase relations in the Pb-PbS system were established by the quenching of samples equilibrated in evacuated and sealed silica capsules. The liquid-miscibility gap seen in some previously published phase diagrams was not observed. The thermodynamic activities of PbS in liquid solutions of this system were derived at 1473 K from the isopiestic equilibration of samples belonging to this solution series with Cu2S-PbS melts of known PbS activities. The behaviour of Pb-PbS melts was found to be compatible with a subregular solution model. This model also made it possible to obtain an analytical liquidus for PbS that was in excelent agreement with the experimental determination.

A. H. Mokken: I am pleased to have been given this opportunity to make a contribution to Dr Muller's paper tonight. The reason for this is that, at one stage in our careers, we were associates in the same undertaking. Dr Muller, then fresh from University, with a degree in pure science, had just stepped onto the first rung of the ladder, which, it was then thought, would lead him to a career in gold extractive metallurgy. However, endowed with an enquiring mind and conscious of a lack of fundamental training in general metallurgy and engineering, he felt a need for further academic study. To meet this need and, more importantly, to meet the necessary finances, he found his opportunity in steel. Armed with a bursary, he bade farewell to gold and proceeded overseas, to the University of Sheffield, to train as a steel metallurgist. The outcome of these academic efforts, which were followed by assignments in the steel industry and a further period at Sheffield, is the man we have listened to tonight-a highly qualified metallurgist who has displayed a sound knowledge of his subject. In choosing Sheffield, Dr Muller became associated with a steelmaking centre of world renown, a centre usually credited with the first systematic production of alloy steels, as far back as the 18th century. Since that time, great advances have been made in the production of alloy steels and this is especially so in the last decade or two, when major developments in civil, mechanical, electrical, aeronautical and nuclear engineering have been made possible by the development of steels with improved properties. In spite of spectacular advances in the technology of non-ferrous alloys, plastics and other materials of construction, steel has maintained its role as a pre-eminent material for engineering use. With the gradual accumulation of data on the properties of steels, and the use of thin film electron microscopy, to study the behaviour and characteristics of such phenomena as dislocations in metals and other microstructural features, the physical metallurgist appears to be approaching the stage of an exact understanding of such phenomena as strength, ductility and brittleness-a knowledge which could lead to close control of such properties and, therefore, to the attainment of the highest goals. An interesting example, illustrating the use of fundamental principles, based on physico-metallurgical research, is the development of the maraging steels developed by Bieber at the International Nickel Company. These steels have met the extreme technological requirements of the space age by providing the material for the cases of large rockets in which qualities, such as high tensile strength, toughness, workability and weldability are most important. Attractive as they might appear to be in considerations of savings of weight, cost of erection, transport of materials and foundations, the use of high strength steels has been accompanied by special problems such as brittle fracture, hydrogen embrittlement, notch-toughness and fatigue. It has been found that high strength steels, which performed acceptably in conventional tension tests, were found to undergo failure, in a brittle manner, in service. Hydrogen embrittlement has caused spectacular failures at a fraction of the normal ultimate tensile strength, and a lack of correlation between fatigue and tensile strengths has diminished the advantages to be obtained from the use of high strength steel in some applications. A new approach to the selection of materials for engineering design has resulted from a consideration of these phenomena in which strength, as such, is no longer as significant as it was previously. Scandium can be recovered from waste streams of other metallurgical processes such as red mud from the Bayer process and titanium dioxide acid waste. This is accomplished by an integrated process comprising leaching using acidic media, solvent extraction using organic solvents and stripping of Sc from the organic phase using NH4F solutions. The precipitation of scandium as (NH4)3ScF6 from NH4F strip liquors has been demonstrated at lab-scale with recoveries and purities greater than 98% and 98.3%, respectively. It is desired to assess the possibility of recovering the solvents for re-use in the process to improve its economy and environmental friendliness. Investigations have been conducted to recover alcohol by simple distillation from strip liquor-alcohol mixtures containing about 50 v/v% alcohol. The mixtures were obtained after anti-solvent precipitation of (NH4)3ScF6 using an alcohol to strip liquor volumetric ratio of 1:1. The starting strip liquor contained about 2000 mg/L scandium in 3 mol/L NH4F solution. In the recovery of methanol, the first distillate product collected had a purity of about 87 v/v% and this decreased slightly with time over two hours. The methanol distillate collected in the first 30 minutes with a purity of ca. 85 v/v% was re-used in anti-solvent crystallisation of (NH4)3ScF6 from the initial strip liquor, and the scandium recovery attained was about 98.6 w/w%, almost similar to that of 99.2 w/w% obtained using 100 v/v% methanol. For ethanol recovery, the first distillate product collected was approx. 84 v/v% pure and the distillate collected in the first 30 minutes with a purity of about 75 v/v% achieved a scandium recovery of about 97.2 w/w% in comparison to 98.5 w/w% obtained using 100 v/v% ethanol during anti-solvent crystallisation. Change management and training initiatives in remote rural settings in Africa are generally difficult to implement successfully due to factors such as varying levels of education, multiple nationalities and languages as well as cultures in one workplace. The challenge has always been the ability to implement change management and training initiatives that will have an impact despite these differences. Essentially this requires that the change and training interventions employed are applicable and should work well with a wide range of individuals sitting in one room ? in practice this can vary from semi-literate workers to engineers with PhDs. In this paper we will share the theory behind behaviour-based change management and training and present a case study that reviews an actual supply chain improvement and sustainability implementation at a Zambian copper mine. The case study explains the results achieved as well as the interventions employed to achieve these results in a multidimensional organizational environment. This paper is relevant to delegates who are faced with implementing changes or training in a similar mining environment. An advanced real-time monitoring system called the tapblock diagnostic system (TDS) has been developed. The purpose of the TDS is to help furnace operators manage the safe operation and economical maintenance of furnace tapblocks. This system is an evolution of the current practice of using historical records and operator interpretation to assess the ?health? of a tapblock. The main parameters affecting tapblock health are heat removal capacity and refractory wear, and these are currently difficult to assess in situ except in a global way. By using monitored and operating data together with predictive numerical modelling and multivariate statistical methods, real-time tapblock performance is assessed relative to expected performance. A state indicator in the form of a green, yellow, and red light is used by furnace operators to monitor the tapblock performance and health status during operation. Access to historical operating data and the provision of diagnostic functions allow for probable health degradation events to be deeply investigated. A recent opportunity to evaluate the actual performance of a first generation TDS installed in the KIVCET furnace at Teck Cominco?s Trail Operations showed that a reasonable estimate of tapblock health was made. However, the evaluation also found that some areas of refractory wear were missed, and a new mechanism affecting refractory wear was discovered that was not previously known. This has reinforced the belief that there is a need to develop improved methods of monitoring so that data used to define the health of the tapblock is more comprehensive and accurate.

Optimum Coal Mine comprises numerous defunct, active, and future mining sections. The mine is primarily a large opencast coal mine; however, underground mining activities will be increasing steadily over the next five years. Opencast and underground mining activities have a significant impact on surface and groundwater resources. To ensure that the mine will be able to continue with its mining operations in the catchment, the extent of this impact requires that substantial intervention and mitigation measures need to be implemented to ensure the environmental integrity and economic use of the catchment's water resources. In developing a sustainable long-term mine water management strategy, numerous scenarios had to be analysed. The various scenarios are a combination of water and land management activities. The main components of the mine's integrated water management strategy include: ? Management of water recharge by continual and appropriate rehabilitation of disturbed land ? Beneficial re-use of impacted mine water for coal plant process water and mining operations ? Reclamation and desalination of remaining excess impacted mine water to potable standard. From the mine's long-term water balance, it is evident that the continued implementation of numerous water management actions is required to mitigate the water resources impact in a sustainable manner. In addition, the installation of a water reclamation plant at Optimum Coal Mine (15Ml/day) is a key step for the mine to achieve a zero impact target.

The extent of ground movements and stress concentrations in the vicinity of the reef in the deep mine-shafts used in the South 4frican gold-mining industry have led to the requirement that special tower structures be developed to span the reef intersection zone in several new shafts. So that structural engineers are able to design these towers, it is necessary to model the dynamic behavior of conveyances traversing them in some way, to provide a means to determine the magnitude of the forces generated. This paper describes the development of two such procedures. The first is a numerical method, utilizing a step by- step integration technique to track the motion of a conveyance through a tower. This technique has been implemented in a computer program, and some results are given.

Reduced downtime and maximized availability of mining machines are the key factors in optimizing production rates. As technology moves industry towards an age of ?intelligent machines? it sets the foundation for change in mining equipment design, functionality, and maintenance. Recent mining machine designs are integrating more and more electronic components into the core functionality of individual piece of equipment due to regulatory and legislative requirements, such as TIER rating, as well as from a safety aspect such as personal detection systems. This paper describes the use of existing on-board electronic equipment to increase machine availability through automated maintenance planning and diagnostic fault-finding capability. The automated maintenance planning takes place on the machine itself in order to be independent of the mine?s infrastructure, while the diagnostic capabilities allow for reduced downtime. The paper also presents a concept to transfer operational data to surface to be able to optimize planning of maintenance and to reduce downtime. Case studies are presented where such systems have been commissioned and are currently in operation, the possibilities of this technology application for the future are examined.

The first Issue in this new series brings together a set of review articles by leading authorities in the field which, taken together, provide a thorough and detailed survey of many of the key topics of current concern relating to the environmental impact of mining. The level of treatment of most topics is at first introductory but evolves through to the advanced level of current research, backed up by extensive citations of relevant primary literature and other sources. Thus the Issue as a whole will be found equally valuable by students of environmental science and those actively engaged in research related to this theme.

This paper presents the lessons learnt during the transition from an open pit method to a sub-level open stoping method at the Koidu Limited kimberlite pipe. These learnings may assist other mines with planning, both from a practical implementation perspective (layout, charging up challenges), and a method for estimating potential dilution and stability challenges associated with the interaction between the surface and underground excavations. Predictive geotechnical stability modelling was successfully applied to highlight potential failure zones, which allowed modification and enhancement of the mining layouts and quantification of the potential dilution of the kimberlite from indicative instabilities.
