Cemented backfilling has enabled underground hard rock mines to extract orebodies more safely with improved ore recovery. It is important to estimate the minimum required strength parameters for a backfill mix by optimizing the binder percentage to enable cost-effective and safe stoping operations. We conducted three-dimensional numerical modelling to study the effect of various stoping parameters on the stability of a free-standing backfill wall. A Mohr-Coulomb material model was used for the backfill material and the rock-fill interface. A strength reduction technique, excluding friction angle, was employed to arrive at a minimum stable strength value for the backfill. For a given combination of strength values, the stability state of the backfill wall could be demarcated using a displacement and yield zone tracking method. The numerical modelling results are compared to some earlier theoretical models. From the simulations, a predictive equation is developed to predict the required strength parameters for a backfill mix to ensure a stable free-standing wall. Examples are given of the successful use of the predictive equation at some underground hard rock mine sites in India.

"The probability of survival of coal pillars is a more rational indicator of stability than the safety factor. Over time, pillars undergo reduction in size by progressive scaling of the sidewalls. The probability of survival is therefore not constant but reduces over time. The rate of scaling can be quantified, and the reduction of the probability of survival as a function of time can therefore also be quantified. The paper describes the link between the factor of safety, probability of survival, and reduction of the probability of survival. Using the safety factor, probability of survival, and the time at which the probability of survival will reduce to 50% is proposed as a more rational method of evaluating pillar stability than the safety factor alone.IntroductionCoal pillar strength has long been the subject of research in South Africa and several other coal-producing countries. However, it began receiving serious attention only after the Coalbrook disaster in 1960. The most important outcomes of the initial investigations were the groundbreaking research by Salamon and Munro (1967) that resulted in the well-known power formula for pillar strength, and the work by Bieniawski (1969) that resulted in a linear formula for strength. The former approach was based on empirical back-analysis of failed and stable pillar cases, and the latter on in situ strength tests on large specimens.The Salamon and Munro (1967) formula has been widely used in South Africa and even adapted for application to hard rock pillars by researchers such as Hedley and Grant (1972).At the time of the initial work by Salamon and Munro, there were only 27 failed pillar cases suitable for analysis. It was not possible at the time to determine site- or seam-specific strength, and the result was a general formula for use in all seams in all mining districts. Since that time pillars have continued to fail and the database continued to grow – as of 2013, there were 85 cases in the database. Using the additional data, there have been a number of re-evaluations of the strength formula and it has also become possible to differentiate between the different mining seams and areas."

"The Lower Orebody at Chingola Division of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Limited, is a stratified orebody that is mined by a continuous caving system. The accurate determination of the developed and semi-developed ore reserves has always been difficult. The new system proposed in 1971 is designed to update and, as new informa¬tion becomes available, to account for the depletion of, the reserves.There are three main inputs to the system. These are borehole data, survey data and extractions data. The borehole data are input to a geological borehole master file system, which holds every recorded detail of a borehole in an easily extractable form. These data can be extracted for ore reserve calculations or for contour mapping of orebodies and rock types. The grades for use in the ore reserve calculations are extracted from the relevant boreholes.The survey data are information on the position of the blocks and drifts, taken from plans, and information on the scraper drift and trough drive positions taken from sections. The information is extracted from the plans and sections using a D Mac pencil follower. The ore reserve is calculated from the survey data and the borehole data.Data on extractions are taken from scraper operators' logs, tramming records, skips hoisted records and accepted mill tonnages and grades. Using these data, the mill tonnages are reconciled back to the drifts, to deplete the current ore reserves.As new workings are brought into operation and further evaluation holes are drilled, the relevant data are input and the new developed ore reserve is calculated."

The paper discusses the improvements achieved after an external sparger flotation column was installed as a final cleaner at the Northam Platinum Ltd. UG 2 concentrator in South Africa. It further discusses the improvements achieved after the conversion of a conventional flotation column, utilized as cleaner in the Merensky concentrator, to an external sparger flotation column. Finally, the application of the above knowledge in the design and commissioning of an external sparger flotation column as final cleaner in the furnace slag concentrator, is also discussed. 1. FINAL CLEANER AT THE UG 2 CONCENTRATOR The MF2 designed UG 2 concentrator is processing 75 000 tonnes run of mine ore at a head grade of 4.0 g/t 3PGM+Au and a feed Cr2O3 concentration of 28 %. Since commissioning of the plant in 2001, Cr2O3 in final concentrate amounted to approximately 5 % of the total mass. Although final concentrate produced from the UG 2 concentrator is blended with final concentrate obtained from the Merensky concentrator before smelting, blended Cr2O3 values in excess of 1.6% lead to difficulties in the subsequent smelting process. Several options for reducing the amount of Cr2O3 in final concentrate have been evaluated namely:- ? Differing types of depressants at various dosing rates. This test work did not reduce the amount of Cr2O3 reporting to final concentrate by any significant extent. ? Reduction in mass pull to minimize the entrainment of Cr2O3 in the concentrate stream.. This process change had a detrimental effect on PGM recovery. Conclusions were drawn that conventional mechanically agitated flotation cells could not achieve the required selectivity without sacrificing PGM recovery. As a consequence an alternative mechanism needed to be incorporated for the final cleaning of PGM concentrate.

Blaine number has long been used to evaluate the pelletising ability of iron concentrate in the industry. Much information and practical data are available about the effect of Blaine number on pelletising efficiency of different concentrate types. But not many researchers have focused on the effect of Blaine increasing method on pelletising behaviour of coarse concentrates. In this paper the effect of two different grinding methods (i.e. HPGR and Ball Mill) on physicochemical properties of coarse magnetic concentrate green and fired pellets were investigated. Microstructural studies by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) showed that the concentrate for which the Blaine number had been increased through HPGR grinding, has flake-like morphology. In contrast, increasing the Blaine number through ball mill grinding results in more granular particles. Two samples were prepared using HPGR and ball mill. The Blaine number of the HPGR product and ball mill product were 900 cm2.gr-1 and 1200 cm2.gr-1 respectively. The results revealed that pellet properties of this HPGR product are comparable to that of the ball mill product; this is due to the fact that the flake-like morphology leads to enhanced pelletising performance of coarse magnetite concentrates. "SynopsisA number of important areas in nuclear fuel cycle, at both the front end and back end, offer ideal opportunities for the application of non-destructive evaluation techniques. These techniques do not only provide opportunities for non-invasive testing of e.g. irradiated materials, but also play an important role in the development of new materials in the nuclear sector. The advantage of penetrating radiation used as probe in the investigation and testing of nuclear materials makes X-ray and neutron radiography (2D) and tomography (3D) suitable for various applications in the total nuclear fuel cycle. The unique and different interaction modes of the two radiation probes with materials provide several opportunities. Their complementary nature and non-destructive character makes them most suitable for nuclear material analyses, analytical method development, and the evaluation of the performance of existing nuclear material compositions. This article gives an overview of the X-ray and neutron radiography/tomography applications in the field of nuclear material testing, and highlights a few of the success stories. Several selected areas of application in the nuclear fuel cycle are discussed to illustrate the complementary nature of these techniques as applied to nuclear materials.IntroductionDuring the development of new materials for the nuclear industry, materials testing and characterization are of the outmost importance to maintain safety standards and reliability. No compromise on safety in the workplace in any area within the total nuclear fuel cycle can be tolerated, and therefore most in-situ material characterization and testing is conducted by certified and qualified personnel schooled in destructive and non-destructive testing (DT and NDT) methods. Certification and qualification in NDT can be obtained through many training centres in South Africa in accordance with European, American, and other international standards (SGS, n.d.; SAIW, n.d.; African NTD Centre, n.d.)."

Bauxite residue known as red mud (RM) is a by-product produced in massive quantities during alumina production by the Bayer process with a utilisation rate of less than 5%. A large amount of RM accumulated and produced continuously has had a seriously adverse impact on the surrounding ecological environment. The application of RM in building materials is considered to be the most effective and thorough way to make RM harmless and recycle resources for the reason that adding RM to concrete as a mineral admixture could not only consume a lot of RM, but also save cement and other energy-consuming industrial products. In this paper, the adaptability to cement and aggregate of RM was studied. The results showed that the compressive strength and flexural strength of concrete using ordinary Portland cement, slag Portland cement or fly ash Portland cement as cementing material showed different trends with the increase of the amount of RM. The influence rules of RM on the compressive strength of Portland cement, slag Portland cement and fly ash Portland cement concrete were similar, whether for silicate aggregate or carbonate aggregate. RM has a negative correlation to the flexural strength of silicate aggregate-ordinary Portland cement concrete, but a positive correlation to silicate aggregate-slag Portland cement, silicate aggregate-fly ash Portland Cement. RM promoted the formation of calcium carbonate crystals and inhibited the formation of ettringite and calcium hydroxide crystals in the matrix while ordinary Portland cement, Portland cement and fly ash Portland cement were used as cementing materials. This study provided support for the use of RM in concrete, the reduction of solid waste storage, and the saving of high energy consumption cement as well. Selective extraction through leaching of an amorphous slag obtained from a base metal smelter plant in Botswana is investigated in this paper, where the main objective is to optimise the experimental variables that would result in the maximum selective extraction of the three base metals (Ni, Cu and Co) from the slag waste. Mineralogical tests showed that the sample is composed mainly of fayalite (Fe2SiO4), with a total entrapped metal sulphides content of about 1.0 wt.% occurring as fine occlusions in the fayalite phase. In our experimental program, we compare the effectiveness of two common leaching techniques. In the first method, we use sulphuric acid to carry out atmospheric beaker leaching tests, and in the second method we use high pressure oxidative leaching. The effects of acid concentration, oxidant addition/oxygen partial pressure and pulp density on metal dissolution rate are examined. The optimal Ni, Cu, Co extractions of 80.5%, 81.9 and 98% respectively were obtained under high pressure oxidative leaching conditions (150 oC, 0.6 M H2SO4, 0.5 MPa O2), with substantially low dissolved Fe of 9.6%, the majority of which was removed as jarosite in the residue. Atmospheric beaker leaching yielded poor extractions of Ni below 40% when sulphuric acid combined with hydrogen peroxide (1.0 M and 0.6 M respectively, 65 oC) were used for leaching, while Fe, Cu and Co dissolutions were each about 80%. Therefore, using high pressure oxidative leaching provides a possibility to effectively extract Ni, Cu and Co while producing an environmentally benign residue, thus alleviating the current adverse environmental issues associated with the abandoned smelter slag. Despite the media's use of the mining industry as a whipping boy over its perceived attitude towards the environment, the facts remain that the only legislated requirement in the SA Statute Books for any form of environmental impact-assessment prior to development is to be found in the Minerals Act in the form of an EMPR. Not only is our industry complying with this requirement, but moves are afoot to set up environmental management systems for existing operations in preparation for seeking accreditation under ISO 14001 when published towards the end of this year. On how broad a front are we advancing? ? Is the industry equipped to handle these challenges? ? Does it have the determination to overcome its problems? ? Do we realise that failure may mean the loss of markets overseas to competitors who can meet the international standards? ? Where are the shortcomings and when must our efforts be focussed?

Broken Hill Mines-1968, edited by M. Radmanovich and J. T. Woodcock, published by The Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Melbourne, 613 pages. Price $A15. This volume, containing some 65 technical papers, was produced for the 1968 annual conference of the Australasian Institute held at Broken Hill to mark the 75th Anniversary of that Institute, founded at Broken Hill in 1893. That conference also coincided with the 85th Anniversary of the discovery of the Broken Hill mining field. This closely reflects the position in this country, where the Witwatersrand gold fields were discovered in 1886, and our South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy will in March, 1969 be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the forerunners of our Institute. There is a comprehensive report of the geology of the Broken Hill area and the mineralogy of the ore body, and there are reports on the mining methods and the metallurgical procedures which have been developed over 85 years of operation of one of the great mining fields of the world. The value of most of the papers is enhanced by a large number of illustrations and photographs. An early section covers the academic and practical aspects of rock mechanics, prospecting, and exploration techniques are described in some detail. A third of the volume is devoted to mining, with papers on 26 aspects. The breadth of the coverage gives an indication of much specialized development, research, and consequent maturity in all departments. The detailed treatment of metallurgical aspects such as sizings of individual mineral particles throughout the milling stages and the development of an on-stream analysis system for lead will commend this volume to the specialist. The committee responsible for the production of this volume, which brings together much information previously only to be found after searching through numerous publications, are to be congratulated on a well produced comprehensive review of many aspects of the mining and metallurgical fields. The global emphasis on conserving energy resources has led to the adoption of hybrid power systems in vehicles. Optimally applied, hybrid systems can save up to 40% on fuel costs. To optimally manage a hybrid vehicle's energy flow it is necessary to know, in real time, all the energy requirements to complete a given route. The energy consumption depends mainly on the vehicle mass, speed profile, and route topography. Of these, the topographic profile is the one factor that is only route-dependent and not influenced by the vehicle or driving styles. The heading vs. distance profile is also an example of a route characteristic not influenced by the vehicle or driving style. In this study the topographic and heading profiles are used to identify routes, and are easily measured by means of digital barometric pressure and compass sensors. Correlations between the current route and previously travelled/stored routes are performed based on their topographic and heading profiles in a point-by-point manner. Above-ground tests were first performed using a road vehicle and six routes to evaluate the system. The system consistently and correctly identified a 20 km route within the first 4 km. It also proved to function correctly in underground tests through the implementation of an instrumented hand-held surveyor's wheel. This system finds direct practical application in optimizing the energy management of an underground hybrid locomotive used by the mining industry in South Africa, but can also be of benefit in applications where route identification is required and using GPS is not feasible.

The Pt-based alloys have a high potential for replacing some Ni-based superalloys (NBSAs) used in the highest temperature and most aggressive environments, and vanadium would be a beneficial alloying element. Six alloys of average compositions Pt-26.6Al-9.1V, Pt-23.1Al-17.8V, Pt-9.6Al-21.1V, Pt-17.4Al-6.4V, Pt-22.3Al-7.9V, and Pt-6.0Al-10.1V (all in at.%) were manufactured by arc-melting and examined in the as-cast condition using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Five samples were heat treated at 1 000°C for 1 500 hours and water quenched, then examined. The phases were identified using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and the identities were confirmed by XRD. In most of the samples, the phases existing in the as-cast condition were different from those at 1 000°C after ~1500 hours heat treatment. A solidification projection, an isothermal section and a liquidus surface projection were determined for the Pt-rich corner.

This paper focuses on the application of ion exchange technology for the recovery of copper from a leach solution originating from a heap bioleach in which base metals are leached from a low-grade ore that bears platinum group metals. Screening tests indicated that Dow XUS43605 has high selectivity for copper over the other metals in the solution, namely nickel, iron, cobalt, zinc, manganese, and aluminium. Batch adsorption kinetic experiments showed that copper adsorption equilibrium is attained at a fast rate. The kinetics of adsorption increased as the temperature was increased from 25°C to 60°C due to the decrease in solution viscosity and the subsequent improved intra-particle mass diffusion. Single-component Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were fitted to the batch copper adsorption equilibrium data, and a maximum copper capacity of 26 g/l was observed for Dow XUS43605. The effects of flow rate, temperature, pH, and initial metal concentration on the dynamic recovery of copper were investigated in fixed-bed columns, and it was determined that temperature and flow rate had the most significant impacts on the loading of copper on the resin at copper breakthrough. A 36% increase in copper loading at breakthrough was observed when the temperature was increased from 25°C to 60°C. Finally, it was determined that a split elution is possible by using different concentrations of H2S04 to first elute co-loaded nickel from the resin, followed by the elution of copper.

The aims of this study were to investigate the factors that influence women’s engagement in technical positions in the South African mining sector and to determine what could be done to promote their successful participation. A convergent parallel mixed-methods research design was used to ascertain the factors that facilitate, inhibit, and influence engagement. In the quantitative phase of the study, questionnaires were circulated to women employeees; and in the qualitative phase, semistructured interviews were conducted with employer representatives, most of whom were human resource personnel. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the three-factor structure (vigour, dedication, and absorption) of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale fit the sample data reasonably well. Although there is room for improvement, respondents demonstrated acceptable levels of engagement in their work. On the other hand, the qualitative findings showed that employee engagement is impacted by unfavourable working conditions, work–life balance, and the mining industry’s male-dominated work culture. The findings showed that employee engagement should be elevated to a core human resource function. To increase the participation of women in mining, human resource professionals are encouraged to collaborate with mine supervisors, managers, and employees to develop programmes that promote employees’ absorption in and dedication to their work.
