"An investigation has been made of the applicability to a variety of coals, other than those from Illinois, of the Powell and Parr method of analysis for the forms of sulphur in coal.A complete study was made of the sulphur in the following coals:- Upper Freeport, Pa.; Pittsburgh seam, Pa.; Pocahontas No. 3, W, Va..; Letcher Co., Ky.; Morgan Co., Tenn.; and Cherokee Co., Kan.The method of analysis gave excellent results when applied to these coals. In the determination of pyrite, the iron-sulphur ratio checked in every case with the theoretical. After the extraction of the pyrite and sulphates, the remaining sulphur was proved to be organic in nature.This work indicated that sulphur exists in coal in three typical forms: - pyrite or marcasite, sulphates, and organic sulphur. A study of the changes which these forms undergo during coking has been made on a variety of coals, and the following five classes of reactions established.First. Complete decomposition of the pyrite and marcasite to ferrous sulphide, pyrrhotite, and hydrogen sulphide. This reaction begins at 300°C., is complete at 600 °C., and generally reaches its maximum between 400 and 500°C."

Hand portable truck axle scales were purchased from the Martin¬Decker Company, Santa Ana, California, for weighing the rubber-tired mine shuttle cars. The scales consisted of two hydraulic load-pads, measuring 4" thick, and 21" long by 13" wide at the pad surface and one totallizer-dial indicator unit. The development of a technique to install the scales effectively for shuttle car-weighing followed an evolutionary process. The setup which finally proved to be effective entailed countersinking and level¬ling the load pads in the floor on the shuttle car trackway such that the tops of the pads were three inches below the floor level. A plat¬form consisting of two braced side-by-side 3" x 8" lumber planks was made. The platform was placed across the load pads with six inches of overlap on each side to provide room for imperfect tracking of the shuttle car. Additionally, 3" x 8" lumber planks were imbedded across the runway immediately behind and ahead of the platform. These auxili¬ary planks were firmly braced into the floor by vertical posts or jacks set against the roof; the planks constituted a stable approach platform to enable the shuttle car to roll unimpeded onto the scale platform in either direction of travel. Figure 22 shows this arrangement in detail. The setup of the scales was done during non-production hours prior to the first working shift of the week. This task took seven to twelve hours with two men. During the actual weighing experiment, the following limitations were realized. 1. The objective of these projects is to provide an ordered and sequenced series of advance toward the Bureau's overall goal of providing the systems technology required to create a more healthful and safer working environment for the Nation's mining and minerals processing workersINTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines conducts a balanced, continuing in-house research and development program to accelerate systematic improvements in health and safety conditions in U.S. mines. "INTRODUCTION In the course of the investigation the Bureau of Mines is carrying on to determine the causes, behavior, a. control of mine fires, the detection of incipient heating underground in the mines and above ground in refuse banks has received consideration.Many of the anthracite fires have been active for years and have progressed considerable distances free their original source.Some of the fires are in inaccessible territory, and it is often impossible to determine with any degree of accuracy their exact location or even the veins of coal that are afire, especially when the fire is in the upper strata and when it is impossible to go underground because of flooded conditions or the presence of an irrespirable atmosphere.In such cases, the only means by which the trend of a fire may be ascertained (as a result of any fire-fighting methods that may have been employed) are the sampling, exanination, and interpretation of the gaseous products coming from the fire area. The most important information desired is to know whether the temperature in the heated area is increasing or decreasing and to determine whether a fire that has been sealed is cooling down to normal mine temperatures or is maintaining its heat or is increasing in intensity due to infiltration of outside air.Interpretation of the analyses of gaseous products from refuse banks on the surface also should be of value in combating such fires. Refuse bank fires, with the additional danger of starting an underground fire through ignition of the outcrop, are by no means unknown in the anthracite coal region, and the causes of such fires are not always apparent. In a few cases the causes have been strongly suggestive of spontaneous origin."

The added hazards to mining incident to oil and gas wells penetrating the coal measures in proximity to mine workings , have long been recognized in those fields where the extraction of oil , gas , and coal , has been in progress for a number of years . The history of these fields is replete with stories of serious mine fires , explosions , and miraculous escapes from both fires and explosions due to either oil or gas finding its way into the mine workings through the strata , or by mining into an unknown or uncharted and abandoned oil or gas well that had not been properly plugged . The Director of the Bureau of Mines , in response to numerous requests from coal operators and oil and gas operators , called a meeting in 1913 to discuss necessary precationary measures to take when drilling oil or gas wells through workable coal beds and to try , if possible . to formulate a set of regulations that might serve as a guide to those persons preparing regulations covering the drilling of oil and gas wells in the various coal producing States . This meeting was attended by representatives of the coal , oil , and gas industries , State geologists , State mine inspectors , and representatives of the Bureau of Mines . A committee was appointed to prepare a set of regulations , which was later published as U.S.Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 53 ; the discussions and results of the meeting werepublished as U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 65 . Later , the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers appointed a committee to draft a model law for the use of the legislature of any State concerned . This committee made its report on April 27 , 1928 . Several of the coal mining States now have more or less comprehensive regulations governing the drilling of oil or gas wells through workable coal beds , others have regulations that are inadequate , while some have no regulations . The State of West Virginia recently enacted a law containing reg lations which are the result of a comprehensive and careful study of the problem .

In this report, the Bureau of Mines presents a theoretical solution for the stresses and displacements in an infinite elastic plate containing a circular hole the boundary of which is loaded by applied radial stresses over four separated arcs. The problem solved is a two-dimensional approximation of the stresses and displacements developed by a large tunnel-boring machine anchored in a circular tunnel. Analysis of the solution shows that the tangential tensile stresses induced on the boundary of the circular opening can be minimized in the roof and maximized in the floor of the opening by proper spacing and loading of the four arcs.

"INTRODUCTION During September 1944, the Bureau of Mines undertook a program of investigation and limited exploratory drilling at the Last Chance mine, near the village of Arthur in Grant County, Wisconsin, as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin when every effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the Nation's war program.The Bureau's attention was directed, to the Last Chance mine when the operators discovered high percentages of zinc in an exploratory churn drill hole a short distance southeast of the mine. The ore was found in the Trenton Limestone, which underlies the ore horizon then being mined. To determine whether this discovery was important, and to demonstrate the possible extension of the ore the Bureau of Mines drilled five additional holes in the vicinity of the discovery.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Nines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. "INTRODUCTION Loss of life from coal-mine explosions in the United States in 1949 was the lowest in any year since before 1870. Although fatality reports from coal nines before 1910 were incomplete,' the explosion fatalities from single disasters or individual States exceeded the 1949 total in each year as far back as 1870, when the records become fragmentary. Since 1890, the only other year in which fewer than 35 were killed was 1946, with a total of 32. Figure 1 shows the total yearly fatalities from explosions in all coal mines and those in anthracite mines alone since 1870. The fatalities in bituminous coal mines were not completely reported before 1910, but enough reports were issued by major coal-producing States to compile reasonably representative figures back to 1885. Any corrections would be additions to these totals.The reason for the moderate total of 46 explosion fatalities in 1948 and the low total of 8 killed in 1949 is thought to be the serious and careful attention devoted to elimination of coal-mine explosion hazards after the disastrous explosions in 1947. The standards now being observed generally with respect to ventilation, rock-dusting, and inspections for gas are better than those found earlier in even the mines having the best reputations for safety. Exceptions are still numerous, but they are fewer, month by month, because of the pressure of Federal and State inspections and a changing conception of the hazards that should not be permitted underground. The prevailing precautions have not eliminated all ignitions of gas or dust, but they have limited propagation to small explosions and have prevented serious loss of life.The number of ignitions (14) reported for the year was less than the average (24) for the 5 years 1944-48 and only half the average for the fiscal years 1929-44. Another favorable factor is that Bureau of Mines representatives were probably in closer contact with both small and large mines in nearly all coal-mining districts. Inspectors now assigned to individual districts are better able to keep informed on the happenings and the progress of safety in their districts. In 1948, one-fourth of the explosions were in mines that employed fewer than 10 men; this condition was duplicated in 1949."

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States, and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

[In previous contributions** the writer has called attention to important relations that faulting bears to the migration and accumulation of oil end gas. It has been pointed that favorably situated parts of oil and gas bearing, sands have been enriched by migration art segregation incident to faulting. The escape of water through natural passages such. as fault fissures has induced wide spread hydraulic currents through the beds toward these, points, of diminished pressure and these water currents, plus buoyancy hove contributed largely toward the migration of oil to favorable rock entrapments in the vicinity of the faults.*** The propulsive force of expanding gas has been one of the contributing causes for the hydraulic currents. Paradoxical as it may seem, the escape of gas with entrained oil through fissures has been on important factor In the migration, and accumulation of oil in many faulted areas. Compressed gas is the propulsive force by which oil generally moves to producing wells. It is also one of the propulsive forces by which oil has moved with or even ahead of water under conditions: of differential pressure brought about by faulting.]

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research with the objective of preventing hearing loss in the mining industry. Longwall mining is one sector that has received considerable attention. Studies involving the monitoring of worker noise exposures, characterizing equipment sound levels and dominant noise sources, evaluating engineering noise controls, analyzing hearing protection device (HPD) effectiveness, and testing of improved sound level monitoring techniques specifically for longwall mining systems, are being conducted. The research efforts revealed that stageloader operators are the most exposed longwall workers, with the discharge end being the noisiest location along the stageloader. In addition, the studies have shown that using stationary dosimeters, coupled with observational data of the cutting cycle and worker habits, has the potential for improved monitoring of the effectiveness of engineering noise controls. To address the ineffective use of soft foam earplugs, a simplified 3-step method was developed for inserting soft foam earplugs. Results indicate a 9 dB greater attenuation after training subjects on the 3-step method. Finally, muff type HPDs are being evaluated for effects of speech intelligibility in noise. The combined results of these studies illustrates that much can and has been done to prevent noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in the mining industry, especially with respect to longwall mining workers. This paper presents an overview of ongoing studies, a progress report of results, and the implications for reducing worker noise exposures and preventing NIHL in longwall mining workers.

Problem: It is estimated that 5 to 10 arc flash explosions occur in electric equipment every day in the United States. In the mining industry the largest single injury category of electrical injuries are caused by non-contact electrical arcs. Method: This investigation progressed in two phases: (a) 836 Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reports of electric arcing incidents that occurred over a period of 11 years were reviewed, and (b) personal interviews were conducted with 32 individuals. A theoretical Safe Job Performance Model guided the study. Results: Behavioral dimensions were identified and included the effect of worker experience, judgment and decision-making ability, behavioral and organizational controls, and safety culture. Summary: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted an investigation of behavioral components associated with arc flash incidents and developed recommendations for interventions based on findings. Impact on Industry: This study fills a vacuum in electrical training with a focus on the organizational and behavioral aspects of arc flash incidents. There search is cross-cutting in its scope, in that the results apply not only to mining and construction, but many other industries employing electricians. Although the majority of mine electrical injuries are the results of burns from electrical arcs, few miners are aware that such a hazard exists. A safety training program, which includes a video and an instructor's discussion guide, was developed for electricians based on this study's findings. “Arc Flash Awareness” was released in 2007 (DHHS NIOSH PublicationNo.2007-116D) and is available through1-800 CDC-INFO. One of the most difficult and longstanding engineering problems associated with coal mining is the catastrophic failure phenomenon known as coal mine bursts (known in the United States as bumps). For more than 70 years, researchers and practitioners have attempted to determine whether this destruction observed underground is caused by stress conditions within the coal pillar or from distant seismic sources in the mine roof and floor strata. The role of confinement and the extent of failure in solid pillars and panels have also proven difficult to define. These are important issues, since control solutions need to be based on a fundamental understanding of the problem. Obsenations by U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers over the last decade have helped to clarify certain aspects of these issues. Microseismic sensors and geomechanic field measurements have located areas of excess energy release, identified stress conditions in coalbeds close to failure, and recorded the response of mine structures prone to bursts. In the present study, data available for a range of U.S. bursts were considered in an effort to evaluate both common and distinctive features. Although the attempt revealed little commonality, encouraging results were produced by categorizing coal bursts by source mechanisms. When a coal burst is thus categorized, differences in environmental factors-such as geology, stress fields, and mining methods-are highlighted, and viable control strategies are readily recognized.

Skin failures of roof and rib in underground coal mines continue to be a significant safety hazard for mineworkers. Skin failures do not usually involve failure of the support systems, but result from rock or coal spalling from between the support elements. For instance, in 1997 more than 800 miners were injured by roof and rib falls, of which 98% were the result of skin failures [Bauer et al. 1999]. Also, nearly 80% of the roof and rib failure injuries occurred at or near the working faces in development sections. The face area is a zone where the potential for skin failure accidents and injuries and for roof and rib failures is high because of mining activity, ground readjustment due to changing stress conditions, and the higher exposure of mine workers. In addition, failures occur where the roof and rib are unsupported. This paper reviews the roof and rib accident statistics resulting from skin failure, and highlights the incidences by type, numbers and percentage, in-mine location, supported and unsupported roof, and worker activity at the time of injury. Also discussed are the causes of roof and rib skin failures, current and improved support methods and materials for skin surface control, and machine design modifications for improved roof bolter operator protection. It also reviews the historical literature on skin failures and control methods.

One of the goals of the Bureau of Mines is to develop metallurgical pro-cesses that conserve energy and/or that take advantage of abundant domestic energy sources. Western lignites and subbituminous coals can be used for firing pellet induration and metallization furnaces. However, the refractory linings of these furnaces must be able to withstand attack from corrosive alkali metal oxides present in the ash of many of the low-rank fossil fuels. The Bureau of Mines conducted dynamic and static slag tests on high-alumina and alumina-silica refractories to determine their resistance to lignite ash slags. The investigations showed that increased alkali content in the lignite ash caused increased corrosion and erosion of the tested refractories. The degree of corrosion decreased with increasing alumina content, with the 99-percent-alumina refractories having the highest resistance. In general, the matrix phase was attacked preferentially to the alumina grains. Also, porosity reduction and tar impregnation enhanced the corrosion and erosion resistance. The 90-to 99-percent-alumina refractories are recommended for use as furnace linings in alkali slag environments.

The systems contributing to the cost analysis, and the flow of data input and output related to these systems, are brought into focus in Figure 6. The various sub-systems of the Master Design Simulator provide the raw operating data basic to the cost model which, operating independently, accumulates the raw input, assigns costs to this data by standard or modified costing procedures, manipulates the costs into standard formats and outputs the data for managerial evaluation. Cost Modeling Direct costing methods are not complex in the sense that elemen¬tary arithmetic is employed using the same basic relations for each cost category. The basic cost model relations described above are illustrated in Figure 7. The greatest difficulty encountered in the transition from a dy¬namic systems simulation model to a costing model is the time frame of the input and output data. Dynamic simulation models utilize a small time increment, on the order of seconds or fractions of seconds, to analyze system operations and interactions. On the other hand, for cost computation and reporting, the smallest relevant time unit is the shift, with reporting periods expanding to days, weeks, months, and years. Complications arise in the accumulation of data for the various report periods due to the use of the Gregorian calendar by modern so¬ciety. The potential for simulation for the life of the mine, possibly in excess of 50 years, increases the complexity of the costing process

The Bureau of Mines wrote a computer program which calculates the saturation curves and condensation characteristics of gaseous mixtures consisting of binary organic vapor and air. The program employs an algorithm which assumes an equilibrium mechanism for condensation, and the degree of fractionation obtained is predicted on the basis of relative volatility. The program incorporates a feature which allows the user to examine the fractionation resulting from condensation as a function of the size of the temperature increments over which condensation is assumed to occur. If a single. temperature interval between the dewpoint of the mixture and the outlet temperature of the condenser is assumed for the calculation, the results obtained will be those resulting from a single equilibrium condensation. If the condensation is assumed to occur over a number of temperature increments, the results obtained will approach those predicted by the Rayleigh equation as the magnitude of the temperature increments approaches zero. The results from calculations performed on vapor mixtures from organic heavy liquid solutions used in beneficiating potash and brucite ores are presented. The liquids are solutions of dibromomethane in trichloroethylene or perchloroethylene. The results show the degree of liquid recovery which is possible by cooling mixtures of organic vapor in air. Compositions of the vapor range from 10 to 95 percent air, and assumed condenser exit temperatures range from 110° to 50° F.

Coal mining is more widely distributed throughout the United States than is generally known, as 30 States are credited with having coal mines. In 1919 twenty-three of these States each produced at least a million tons of bituminous coal, and all the States produced about 560,000,000 tons. In addition, Pennsylvania produced about 85,000,000 tons of anthracite. Twenty-eight States have regulations prepared by commissions or have enacted laws governing the operation of coal mines. Pennsyl¬vania has separate codes for the anthracite and bituminous fields. The codes may be classified as follows: Twelve distinctly coal¬mining codes; eight codes that are essentially coal mining, but also apply to other mines; five codes that are subdivided, referring partly to coal mines and partly to other mines; and four codes that are essentially metal mining, but apply in part or in whole to coal mining. The first State to have a coal-mining law was Pennsylvania, which enacted a law, for Schuylkill County only, in 1869. The first State to enact a coal-mining law governing all the coal mines in the State was Illinois in 1872, followed by Ohio in 1873. Pennsylvania in 1879 enacted a law for anthracite mines only, but did not enact similar laws for bituminous mines until 1577. At least 10 other States enacted coal-mining laws between the years 1870 and 1890. Before 1890 electricity was little used in coal-ruining operations and therefore practically no provisions governing the installation, inspection, or maintenance of electrical equipment were made in any of the laws enacted up to 1890. In the law of Colorado, approved April 8, 1885, there is a reference to the use of telephones, probably the first reference to electrical equipment of any kind in a State-mining code. Most of the mining codes have been changed from their original form by amendment or by complete revision. In some of the early changes a casual reference is made to the use of electricity or to the handling of electrical equipment. In 1911 Pennsylvania added
