Important quantities of gold, silver, platinum-group metals, selenium, tellurium, and arsenic are recovered in the processing of copper concentrates. The objective of this Bureau of Mines study was to determine the occurrence of these elements in copper ores and to trace their distribution during subsequent processing steps. The study describes the important areas supplying concentrates, precipitates, and unrefined copper to the copper smelting and refining industry in a composite of the years 1971-74. The relative importance of these areas as a source of the respective byproducts is assessed. The lack of certain quantitative and assay data, recycling of dusts and slags, and the addition of scrap to the feed often complicates calculations and estimations of the byproducts in the smelter-refinery throughputs. Such volatile or low-boiling point elements as arsenic, selenium, and tellurium may be lost in gaseous and other emissions in various processing stages, or they may be concentrated in slags and residues for which samples were not available. The effects of antipollution legislation to improve control of sulfurous and other emissions that may affect recovery of certain byproducts was noted. A section on newer technology illustrating hydro-metallurgical techniques that may affect the recovery of minor metals is included.

This report describes an investigation in which we used iron-doped diesel fuel to generate metal-bearing diesel particles and a subsequent analysis of the particles using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). For this study, DPM was generated by a 1.5-L diesel engine and the fuel was doped with ferrocene to enhance the level of iron in the system. The exhaust particles were collected on TEM grids and analyzed using the Philips CM12 TEM/EDS instrument. Results show that when the iron-to-carbon (soot) ratio (Fe/C) in the engine is low, the exhaust particles have morphologies similar to those for the undoped case, but at a threshold Fe/C value of 0.013 (for this engine), homogeneously nucleated metallic nanoparticles are formed and begin agglomerating. The number and size of these nanoparticles increase with level of doping. Metal-bearing particles that span a wider size range are also formed. Agglomeration of metallic and carbon particles is observed in two distinct modes: attachment of iron primary particles (5–10 nm in diameter) to carbon agglomerates, and coagulation of iron agglomerates (20–200 nm in diameter) with carbon agglomerates. Results of this work imply that as new engine technologies reduce soot levels in the engine and/or levels of trace metals in the fuel are increased, the generation of metallic nanoparticles may ensue, creating a potential health concern. The general nature of the special constructional features that are required to provide safety from explosion hazards on machines approved as permissible by the Bureau of Mines is fairly well known to mining men who are at all interested in safety. These requirements are outlined in the schedules, under the provisions of which the investigations of such machines are conducted. Also, the method of conducting inspections and. tests of such machines has been described in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, published in 1929. A more detailed knowledge of the special safety features of a particular machine is often useful and sometimes essential for inspectors, safety engineers, maintenance men, and engineers in selecting machines for a particular application. Three bulletins that give information of this nature have been published by the bureau, viz., Bulletin 313, Permissible Storage-Battery Locomotives and Power Trucks. This Bureau of Mines publication consists of an overview of the mine waste management research currently being conducted by the Bureau. The following papers, given at a Technology Transfer Workshop, emphasize the increasing importance of research related to the safety and environmental considerations of mine waste disposal In recent years. Current work related to legislation passed in the last 10 years and their subsequent standards includes the development of adequate monitoring systems, development of stability and seepage prediction and control techniques, control of runoff water, and control of leaching solutions. Selected topics are included here that cover coal mine waste disposal, embankment slope stability monitoring, flow failures of mine tailings impoundments, and controlled burnout of abandoned coal mine fires. The projects described provide a current documentation of problems being addressed.

The objective of this study was to investigate the environmental effects of slaking of surface mine spoils. To accomplish this, both field and laboratory programs were undertaken, supplemented by a thorough literature search. The field program consisted of drilling the highwall as well as test pitting in recent, two-, five, and ten- year-old spoil piles at four active mining sites in the eastern bituminous coal fields. Pertinent observations were made and samples collected for laboratory analyses which consisted of several standard geotechnical, agronomic, and geochemical tests. Durability tests utilized included jar slake, cyclic wet-dry, rate of slake, and slake durability tests. Correlation between field and laboratory portions was made- and results presented. The report is concluded with a discussion of the slaking process and associated environmental impacts, proposal of a preliminary classification system for use in premine planning, and presentation of management techniques to optimize the slaking process.

The Valery fluorspar deposit , also known as the Hamilton deposit , is northeast of Lovelock and 4 miles by poor dirt road east of U. S. Highway 40 . It is in the Humboldt Mining District , on the west side of the Humboldt Range , at an altitude of 6,000 to 6,500 feet . The property was examined by the Bureau of Mines on February 83/ and April 8 , 1944.4/ The last examination was made with an engineer of the Geological Survey.5/ Exploring by means of trenches , cuts , shaft sinking , coyote holes off the shaft , and a small amount of prospecting with short drill holes , was begun in January 1945 and was completed June 30 , 1945. An engineer6/ of the Geological Survey visited the property in April and again in June 1945 to complete a topographic map of the area and to note the results of exploration by the Bureau of Mines . Only minor surface exploring had been done on fluorspar occurrences previous to the Bureau's work . No mining equipment or living facilities are on the property .

Iran's petroleum industry is nearly 50 years old and the oldest in the Near East. According to published figures, Iran ranks third in production and reserves in the Near East. These reserves (including probable reserves) are estimated at 35 billion barrels and constitute about 11 percent of the world's total. Iran is the sixth largest producer of crude petroleum in the world. The 1961 output of more than 430 million barrels was 5 percent of total world out-put for the year. In the same year, Iran ranked fourth among world petroleum exporters, providing 8.4 percent of total world exports.

[Before 1914 Germany held virtual monopoly on the world supply of potash for fertilizer purposes. During the world War, potash shipments to the United States ceased, and recourse was had to domestic supplies. High war-time prices stimulated interest n various sources, and domestic production increased rapidly. At the close of the war, resumption of shipments from Germany and other sources reduced prices to below pre-war levels, and, as a result, most of the domestic producers ceased operational.]

WHY IS IT that smoke-abatement efforts do not bring more satisfactory results? The main reason is an incorrect estimate of the kind and size of the job. When an industrial community realizes that keeping the air clean is a project of similar magnitude to keeping streets clean, providing clean water, removing city waste, or guarding the moral atmosphere, then there maybe a real hope of success. We usually think of the project in too small terms. It is thought of as is the dog catcher or the boiler inspector--a matter of a man or two, a job or two, a small appropriation of variable and uncertain amount, to be abolished in a fit of economy and reestablished under pressure of a vigorous minority. Even so, it is surprising how much is obtained for the effort; but the community is rarely satisfied, for the job is bigger than it was conceived to be. Continuous, never-ceasing effort is required to clean up a smoky city. A few months of relaxation and the situation slips back some years of effort.

This document describes the direction and progress of the Bureau of Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Program as of January 31, 1979. It is aimed at focusing the Bureau's role in environmental research supporting oil shale development with respect to the activities of other involved government agencies and private industry. Environmental considerations in oil shale extraction, such as ecological disturbances, health and safety hazards, waste management, and socioeconomic impacts, are discussed along with the type of research known to be planned by organizations to ameliorate these problems.

This paper purposes to outline briefly results of seismic measurements made in the vicinity of blasts in a mine and in open-quarry operations. It endeavors to examine the amplitude and frequency of such vibrations as influenced by the loading, geology, and distance from the source and includes comments on factors that may index the destructiveness of a vibration and a method for measuring the stresses produced. There seems to be no simple mathematical analysis of the transmission of seismic energy through the ground, and experimental observations are at present most feasible. SEISMOLOGIC INSTRUMENTS Instruments developed by the Bureau of Mines for recording ground vibrations from quarry blasting comprise a new type of seismometer, oscillators, and a recording oscillograph. The seismometers respond to vibrations reaching them through the earth and transmit their characteristics by electric current to the oscilloglaph, where they are recorded by a beam of light on a moving strip of sensitized photographic paper. The seismometers are so constructed that their sensitivity to earth vibration can be controlled, thus keeping the amplitude of the recorded wave within bounds on the paper. Each instrument has been calibrated against vibrations of known intensity and frequency so that correction factors are known for the idiosyncracies of each unit. Moreover, each seismometer is calibrated in the field for its particular sensitivity setting at each blast. By these controls the actual movement of the earth due to vibrations of one ten-thousandth of an inch can be accurately measured.

A technologic group such as the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division of the Bureau of Mines, which conducts research on many of the complicated and frequently interrelated problems of extracting crude oil and natural gas from the ground, transporting them to market or to places for subsequent treatment, and manufacturing products, should report progress from time to time. Engineers and others who apply the results obtained by this division are closely associated with its personnel, because may of the problems are attached cooperatively with groups in industry. Some of this cooperation is formal, as exemplified by work now in progress under cooperative agreements with the States of Oklahoma, Kansas, and others, but much of it is informal, prompted by the desire to be mutually helpful in the public interest. Furthermore, the published reports of the Bureau on subjects pertaining to petroleum and natural-gas technology come to the direct attention of a relatively large number of persons, whose interest in results and appreciation of the value of this type of work have caused them to be kept currently informed regarding available data.

The land mass of the Asia and Pacific region comprises 11 million square miles or about 15% of the total Earth's land area. The bulk of the region is contained on the Asian continental land mass. Australia, the world's largest island or the world's smallest continent, alone is almost as large as the continental United States. The islands of New Zealand, New Guinea, Borneo, Sumatra, and Honshu are among the largest in the world. Collectively, they constitute a land area of 1.1 million square miles or an area about one-fourth the size of the United States. The countries in the Asia and Pacific region represent some of the most vibrant economies in the world. Japan is undisputed as one of the world's leaders in manufacturing and commerce. Hong Kong and Singapore are significant both as entrepôt and banking centers. The economies of Australia, the Republic of Korea, and Taiwan compare favorably to the level of the industrialized countries in western Europe. Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand have maintained strong economic growth during the past two decades. All these countries in the Asia and Pacific region collectively constitute a significant bloc as to raw materials production and consumption, as to manufacturing, and as to world trade.

These proceedings consist of papers presented at two Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminars for the purpose of disseminating recent advances in mining technology related to coal mine fire and explosion prevention. Primary, although not exclusive, emphasis is placed on underground coal mining. The papers address research accomplishments ranging from methods for detecting mine fires to remote sealing systems for extinguishing coal mine fires. Each paper represents the current state-of-the-art in the respective research categories. Presentations include research occurring from both Bureau in-house and contract efforts.

This report describes a method of measuring and analyzing the initial deformation which occurs in the medium surrounding a mine accessway as the opening is created. Discussed are (1) the hypothesis upon which the research is based; (2) the in situ rock-deformation measuring equipment developed; (3) the field tests, consisting of measuring the deformation of the medium around two 4-foot-diameter raise bores as the boring progressed; and (4) a finite-element technique to correlate theoretical with experimental results, using elastic theory. Described also are the raise-bore operation and performance. The instrumentation developed proved to have the sensitivity and resolution necessary to measure rock deformation around a full-scale raise bore during excavation. Tests show the relationships of rock deformation to progress of the raise boring and to time. The initial deformation of the opening appeared to be elastic. Using the deformation records and an estimated field stress, the modulus of elasticity was determined for the rock mass. In addition, the importance of this type of measurement in assessing support-problem areas is discussed.
