Roof support systems, longwall shields in particular, have persistently grown in size and capacity for the past 25 years. Why is this? Is it a good thing or is it unnecessary? What are the consequences of this “bigger-the-better” design philosophy? Rarely do we see a “one size fits all” approach to roof support except when it comes to longwall shields, where the historical trend for new procurements is to simply purchase the highest capacity support you can buy. Does high capacity ensure failures will not occur? The answer is no! The highest capacity tailgate supports are typically the ones that fail the most often. What does this tell us? It tells us that there are fundamental aspects of support design and ground control that we still do not understand or recognize when designing a support system. This paper provides an interesting evaluation of these issues and proposes a different approach to support design that attempts to match the support performance characteristics to the ground behavior. Along the way, some of the old premises of support design will be discarded, and new “controversial” ideas developed. Thinking outside the box never hurt any industry. Mining has made it a common practice.

A study of the flotation characteristics of columbium-tantalum minerals was made by contact-angle and microflotation methods, and the findings were confirmed by flotation of two natural ores. In the contact-angle study conditions for collection of columbite, pyrochlore, and tantalite were determined for (1) sodium oleate with a sulfonate; (2) sodium isooctyl phosphate; (3) a short-chain primary amine; (4) a long-chain primary amine; and (5) a quaternary amine. These conditions were confirmed in microflotation tests. Information about collector action on common gangue minerals was also obtained by these two methods. In batch flotation tests on a pyrochlore ore and a columbite ore, it was demonstrated that collectors selected on the basis of contact-angle and micro-flotation studies would float columbium minerals from a complex natural ore. However, multiple cleaner and scavenger flotation steps will be necessary to produce commercial concentrates. From a pyrochlore ore containing 0.54 percent Cb2O5, a 44.4 percent Cb2O5 concentrate was made containing 36.4 percent of the total Cb2O5. For a columbite are the corresponding values were: 4.35, 54.6, and 67.1 percent. During the batch flotation study, wetting agents were found to aid in the gangue-ore mineral separations.

The Beckley mine is one of five new mines in a heretofore unmined portion of the Beckley coalbed. The remoteness of these new mines from prior mining and their greater overburden preclude applying methane emission experience obtained in the old mines. Four sections of the Beckley mine were monitored. The data gathered show that variations in methane emission cannot be explained by variations in coal production. Although overburdens varied by as much as 30 pct, no correlation with methane emissions could be determined. The rib emissions increase with increased length of rib from a section advancing into virgin coal and do not decline over a prolonged idle period (32 days) whereas some decline has been measured for a section not mining into virgin coal. The indication is that degasification prior to mining will reduce the hazard of methane emissions in this area of the Beckley coalbed.

The Bureau of Mines used molecular beam-mass spectrometry to determine the microstructure of a 10.1% CH4-2l.2% 02-67.6% Ar-1.1% CF3Br inhibited flame and its uninhibited analog, both stabilized at 32 torr on a cooled flat-flame burner. Composition profiles of atomic, radical, and stable species and temperature profiles for both flames were obtained and compared. Kinetic analyses of the profiles yielded values for the rate coefficients of several elementary methane flame reactions and information on the reactions of formation and decay of the observed halocarbon species. CF3Br is judged to decay by thermal decomposition as well as by abstraction reactions, and the fluorocarbon chemistry occurring in the inhibited flame is due primarily to CF2 radical reactions. Rate coefficients and mechanisms for reactions of the inhibitor-related species are given.

Growing concern from labor unions, regulatory agencies, and industry about the safety of a prevalent underground coal mining method which utilizes remote control has prompted human factors field evaluation of mining activities. Remote control operations were implemented with little consideration given to human-system interactions. Ideally, collecting and analyzing information prior to implementing new technology would have helped to address potential problems. One such problem that operators and other mine personnel are faced with is the question of where they should safely position themselves to avoid injury while remotely operating machinery. To determine work methods employed by machine operators before and after implementation of the new method, work sampling techniques have been used to provide data about positioning of face crew members at different points in the mining cycle. This data provides information for optimal positioning, leading to safer operating procedures and identifying training shortfalls.

Pulmonary inflammation is accompanied by increased microvascular permeability and leakage of plasma into alveolar spaces. Serum has been shown to affect superoxide (O2-) production from pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) in vitro, and in some cases serum has been shown to be necessary for stimulation of PAM. An electro-optical method was used to measure O2- production from single PAM by measuring the reduction of nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate (NBTH2) from videorecorded images of individual cells. PAM were stimulated by their initial attachment to culture dishes independent of serum. The addition of 2% serum to the culture medium increased NBTH2 production during attachment, whereas concentrations of 5 and 10% serum had no additional effect. In contrast, PAM incubated for 2 hrs could not be stimulated by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) or zymosan particles to produce O2- unless serum was present during the incubation and/or stimulation; however, NBTH production was similar in all cases of serum addition. Also2, serum alone did not stimulate adherent PAM indicating that serum is necessary but not sufficient for stimulation of attached. PAM. These results suggest that changes in microcirculatory permeability may have a pronounced effect on superoxide production by PAM and that serum may help regulate or condition these cells during inflammation of the lung. The Bureau of Mines investigated the flotation responses of two copper-nickel ore samples from the Duluth Complex with the objective of recovering bulk sulfide concentrates. One of the ores studied was taken from a test pit; the other was taken from a test shaft. The samples were quite similar except that the pit sample analyzed 0.35 pct Cu and 0.11 pct Ni and the shaft sample analyzed 0.69 pct Cu and 0.14 pct Ni. Flotation responses were studied in both laboratory and pilot plant tests. Pilot plant flotation responses were similar for both samples resulting in grades of 12.2 pct Cu and 2.5 pct Ni for the pit sample and 12.2 pct Cu and 2.1 pct Ni for the shaft sample. Weight recoveries were 2.5 pct for the pit sample and 5.2 pct for the shaft sample. Copper and nickel recoveries for the pit sample were 87 and 62 pct, respectively, and 92 and 73 pct for the shaft sample. Both concentrates contained small but significant values of cobalt and precious metals. Cobalt recoveries were low--less than 40 pct for both concentrates. Precious metals contents of the concentrates were 1.59 oz/ton for the pit sample and 0.99 oz/ton for the shaft sample. Silver was the predominant precious metal by weight, but platinum and palladium represented the highest values.

As part of the initial investigation and validation of a new boundary-element formulation for stress modeling in coal mines, the underground stresses and displacements at two multiple-seam coal mines with unique stress problems were modeled and predicted. The new program, LAMODEL, calculates stresses and displacements at the seam level and at requested locations in the overburden or at the surface. Both linear elastic and nonlinear seam materials can be used, and surface effects, multiple seams, and multiple mining steps can be simulated. In order to most efficiently use LAMODEL for accurate stress prediction, the program is first calibrated to the site-specific geomechanics based on previously observed stress conditions at the mine. For this calibration process, a previously mined area is "stress mapped" by quantifying the observed pillar and strata behavior using a numerical rating system. Then, the site-specific mechanical properties in the model are adjusted to provide the best correlation between the predicted stresses and the observed underground stress rating. Once calibrated, the model is then used to predict future stress problems ahead of mining. At the two case study mines, the calibrated models showed good correlation with the observed stresses and also accurately predicted upcoming high stress areas for preventive action by the mines.

It describes briefly the occurrence of sodium sulfate in Salt Lake and Tooele Counties, Utah, presents data on sampling, and describes ex-traction and refining raw material and a mining research project that has been conducted on the deposits. The Bureau of Mines investigated the effects of HCI concentration and solution temperature on the solubility and crystal form of the chlorides of Co, Mn, and Ni when sparged with HCI gas at temperatures of 20°, 40°, and 60° C. Increasing HCI concentration in solution caused the chlo-rides of Co, Mn, and Ni to crystallize (salt out) because of the common ion effect. The salting-out crystallization was most effective for NiCI2, which had a solubility of 0.7 pct at 20° C and maximum HCI concentration. COCl2 salted out to a minimum solubility of 9.4 pct at 20° C and 22 pct HCI concentration and increased in solubility at greater HCI concentrations because of the formation of chloride complexes. MnCl2 was intermediate in behavior. The effect of temperature on solubility was greatest for CoCl2 and least for NiCI2, 15 and 7 pct change, respectively, over the temperature range of 20° to 60° C. The salted-out chlorides of cobalt and nickel formed the hexahydrates and those of manganese formed the tetrahydrate in saturated metal chlo-ride solutions at 20° C and low concentrations of HCI. Increasing the temperature or the HCI concentration caused a 108s in waters of hydra-tion. At 60° C, the salted-out crystals of NiCl2 formed the tetrahydrate in HCI concentrations up to 18 pct and the dihydrate at higher concentrations, while cobalt and manganese chlorides formed the dihydrates, even in water.

4.1 Introduction Using methods outlined in previous sections of this report, programs were written and/or obtained to: i) select best combinations of "a" and "k" for up to 8 different value parameters, ii) calculate available and unavailable ore tonnages and other statistics, and iii) produce contour maps of various parameter characteristics and available tonnages on a line printer. All the above programs are written in Fortran IV for execu¬tion on IBM 360/370 computers. 4.2 Calculation of Coal Reserves The Ore Reserve program suite consists of the following sections: (a) UNIT 1: This unit is a subroutine called by Unit 2 to determine values for "a" and "k" from the given data. (b) UNIT 2: These programs calculate ore reserves and are composed of a main program and several sub¬routines. A small, special-purpose centrifugal compressor was developed to circulate 60 pounds per hour of helium at 1,000° F and 250 psig because standard, commercial units were not available. Performance characteristics of this compressor were determined at helium flows of 2,000 to 18,000 std cu ft per hour, pressures of 100 to 250 psig, and temperatures of 100° to 1,000° F. This range is 2 to 90 actual cu ft per minute. Several graphs show the adiabatic head developed by the compressor over this wide flow range at various combinations of temperature and pressure. A compressor performance map relates pressure ratio to mass flow, temperature, pressure, and speed. This map can be used to accurately predict compressor performance factors within the range of operating conditions covered by the experiments.

The Other South Pacific Island states extend from Palau, also called Belau, near the Philippines in the west, to French Polynesia in the east. However, a number of countries and territories have been omitted, from this chapter because their mineral production was insignificant to the local economy. These include the French over-seas territories of French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna Islands; independent states, including Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu; the New Zealand freely associated state of the Cook Islands, and the New Zealand dependency of Niue. What mineral production existed in these islands was limited to construction materials such as coral reef limestone, crushed stone, and sand and gravel in minor quantities solely for domestic consumption. FIJI The mineral industry of Fiji continued to be dominated by gold, although this sector contributed less than 1 % to the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country. Gold and silver together ranked second in value among the country's exports. Fiji's economy contracted 11% during the 8-month period following the first, on May 14, of two military coups. Although the island nation had been a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations since its independence on October 10, 1970, Fiji's membership terminated with the emergence of the Republic or Fiji on October 15.

The Bureau of Mines devised a new machine-test method for measuring carbon dioxide inspired by a wearer of self-contained breathing apparatus. The new method compares favorably in speed and precision with standard man-tests in which the apparatus is tested while actually worn, and is scheduled for use in future approval tests for facepiece carbon dioxide 'measurements. However, man-tests will still be used to measure the efficiency of the carbon dioxide sorbent materials in closed-circuit breathing apparatus.

As the amount of new fractured surfaces or "damaged rock layers" within roof rock increases, the stability of the rock mass decreases. While direct measurements of this phenomenon are not easily made, there is good circumstantial evidence to support this hypothesis. For example, it is common to observe increased cracks or fractures in the immediate mine roof rock before a roof fall. Likewise, roof drill holes placed in areas that later fail often reveal increased numbers and/or separations of fractures within the rock column through time. And finally, the frequency of microseismic activity, representative of rock fracturing, increases before a roof fall. For this study, more than 700 microseismic emissions were collected from two underground limestone mine roof fall areas in southwestern Pennsylvania. Microseismic events were located and magnitudes determined using the moment magnitude technique. Moment magnitude is based on the event seismic moment, which is a measure of the seismic deformation. The amount of new fracture surface length was calculated based on the stored strain energy within the rock prior to fracture. In the two case studies presented, a significant amount of microseismic activity was observed as much as two days before the first signs of failure in the roof fall areas. Additionally, results from this analysis reveal much about the behavior of strata prone to failure and allows for the construction of hazard maps based on microseismic emissions. The potential use of this technique as a means of anticipating roof falls is analyzed and discussed.

Composite diaphragms were used in the investigation of electrowinning Ti from TiC14 in a fused LiCl-KCI-TiC'2 electrolyte. Composite diaphragms tested were of two general classes--those consisting of two or more solid materials, and those which contained, in addition, a loose material. An electrowinning cell using a flat diaphragm is described. The maximum current density for these diaphragms was 300 amp per ft2. Lower currents permitted longer operation times. The composite diaphragms gave electrode efficiencies that averaged approximately 60 percent, and the electrowon titanium was of good quality--some Brinell hardnesses were as low as 68.

This report deals with the effectiveness and economy of installing mine timbers treated with preservatives in long-life service locations. Early in the present century, when mine timbers and labor were plentiful, it was not general practice to install treated timbers in such places. Because national sources of good mine timber are declining steadily, the mining industry must now conserve timber. Moreover, the cost of installing and replacing mine timbers has been rising. Therefore, even the simplest of treatments can be expected to give some return on the investment when applied to timbers that are to be installed in relatively permanent locations. Better methods of treatment will produce better returns. In a service test of maple timbers treated by the hot-and cold-bath method and installed in main haulageways of the Athens mine of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., Negaunee, Mich., zinc chloride-treated timbers had an average useful life of 13.3 years; borax-treated timbers, 11.2 years; and sodium fluoride-treated timbers, 7.7 years. Untreated timbers used as controls had an average useful life of 3.8 years.

The boy rescued the baby and perf'oxmed artificial re­suscitation upon it, thu.s saving the child's life. Increased activity in the beneficiation of taconite, particularly the magnetic variety, has shown the need for more information on the rate of oxidation of magnetite to hematite. This oxidation occurs in the pelletizing step of the beneficiation process. Magnetic taconite is an intimate association of magnetite and a siliceous gangue. It must be ground to approximately 70 to 30 percent minus 325 mesh to liberate the magnetite from the gangue. With sufficient liberation, magnetic concentration will yield a product high enough in iron and low enough in silica for blast-furnace use. The magnetic concentrate must be agglomerated before it can be used in a blast furnace. Agglomeration is the general term applied to all methods of compacting or consolidating fine iron-oxide materials, sintering and pelletizing being the two most common methods. Sintering is clone on a Dwight-Lloyd or Greenawalt sintering machine. Pelletizing consists of balling fine, moist oxide in a rotating drum, followed by baking at .a temperature below that of incipient fusion to develop a permanent bond within each pellet. The magnetic concentrate from taconite is too fine for good sintering practice but fine enough for good pelletizing practice.
