Experimental work by the Bureau of Mines indicates that when a coalbed is degassed by boreholes, the flow of methane may actually increase with time. This phenomenon appears to be the result of a relative-permeability effect; that is, the coalbed permeability to the gas increases sharply with decreasing water saturation. This report reviews the background of experimental evidence indicating a relative-permeability effect, and presents the results of a computer simulation of two-phase flow in coal.

A mineral survey of a 13,525-acre portion of the 21,875-acre Owyhee Canyon Wilderness Study Area in northern Nevada was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1984. Two samples from sand and gravel deposits in the study area contained minor placer gold typical of the Owyhee River area. The gold-bearing gravels are too low grade or of insufficient volume to support commercial placer mining operations. The sand and gravel deposits might have minor local construction uses.

The motor gasoline that is being marketed in the United States this winter (1928-29) is slightly more volatile than that gold a year ago. This characteristic is shown by a slight lowering of the distillation temperatures, particularly at the average initial and 20 per cent boiling points. Daring the past mine and a half years the Bureau of Mines has made semi annual surreys of the gasoline marketed in the United States; the Survey just completed is the nineteenth in the series. The 12 cities in which samples have been collected were chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories, as it was obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.

Recovering from low demand in 1975, raw mineral production in the United States maintained a steady climb in value and quantity throughout 1976, keeping pace with the gross national product (GNP), which increased 11.5% compared with that of 1975. The minerals industry, in the past, has met ever-increasing demand while keeping production costs to a minimum. To maintain this capability, technological research and development of more efficient processing methods must continue. The role of Government and its increasing involvement in minerals industry actions received unfavorable comment from various segments of the industry in 1976. Government pricing controls were of concern to most industrial firms marketing like products. Public land withdrawals in large blocks were of concern to the mineral industry.

Coke Since the beginning of manufacturing of metallurgical coke in the United States, which dates from about 1859, Pennsylvania has main tamed supremacy in coke production Available statistics for the year 1880 show an output of 3,338,300 short tons, which was neatly trebled by the end of the succeeding 10 years. From this time on the increase was steady, though not rapid, and in 1922 the total production was 13,991,892 tons, which is approximately 37 per cent of the total coke production of the United States. The main reason for the rapid development of the coke industry in Pennsylvania lies in the abundance of coals particularly adapted to beehive coking, for which purpose the Pittsburgh bed in the Connellsville district has long been looked upon as standard At first practically all metallurgical coke was made in beehive ovens, the only exception being the short lived and wasteful method of coking in piles, byproduct owns did not make then appearance until after 1893 The suitability of a beehive coking coal cannot be accurately predicted from its chemical analysis, but it can be said, perhaps, that the volatile matter should be about 32 per cent, and that the oxygen content should not be mole than 10 pet cent or less than 4 per cent The sulphur and phosphorus content should be small-not over 1 25 per cent sulphur and under 0 02 pen cent phosphorus-and the ash content should not be over 7 per cent The Pittsburgh bed at Connellsvnlle fills these requirements well, as may be seen from the following representative analysis. This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation characteristics of three samples collected from the Kidney seam, in the Northern Field of the anthracite region. Removal of the sink 1.70 specific gravity material from the samples collected would result in greatly reduced ash contents at yields in excess of 90 percent. The Kidney seam, in the locations sampled, proved to be a low-ash anthracite containing an unusually high percentage of float 1.45 specific gravity material.

In an effort to decrease noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in coal preparation plant employees, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conduct­ing research to identify and control dominant noise sources in vibrating screen (VS) machines. To this end, acoustic measurements of the noise radiated by a dewatering VS were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) using microphone phased-array technology. These measurements allowed for the identification of the screen as the dominant source in the 250 Hz 1/3-octave band. The sidewalls are the major contributors in the 315 and 400 Hz bands, whereas the eccentric mechanisms and the electric motor are the dominant sources in the 800 and 1,000 Hz bands, respectively.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a time-dependent droplet vaporization model (in the absence of forced convection) that can be applied to the vaporization of liquid Halon 1301 droplets (vapor pressure at 300 K = 14 atm) sprayed from an extinguisher. It was found that rapid surface vaporization quickly lowers the droplets&apos; surface temperature very near to the boiling temperature, and the vaporization becomes diffusion controlled. Although the lifetime of the droplet is proportional to the square of the initial radius of the droplet, the elapsed time prior to complete droplet vaporization is not proportional to the square of the droplet radius, as an equilibrium model would indicate.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a method for the calibration of class 2 and class 4 standards of mass using a procedure from designs developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This method produces a weight calibration that is within 1.0 pct of the balance sensitivity. A set of four 1-kg weights yielded a standard deviation of 3.25 mg compared to ±2.91 mg balance sensitivity. The method employs the use of a high-accuracy balance to measure the difference between a set of weights calibrated by NIST and the set to be calibrated. The error of the balance is included in the error for each weight calibrated.

In 2004, management at Unimin&apos;s Gleason, TN operation began implementing ergonomic interventions specifically targeted to reduce risk of musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs). Together with corporate and site management, Unimin identified work site hazards and began to modify work practices/equipment. Some interventions were relatively simple and were implemented immediately. Others, like improvements to a mobile shredder, were more complex but were eventually resolved through a participatory approach with employees, management, manufacturers and NIOSH. This paper discusses ergonomic interventions that were successfully implemented using a bottom-up approach to reducing the risk of injury.

[In an endeavor to promote greater efficiency in the lime industry, the United States Bureau of Mines is preparing a series of preliminary reports dealing with particular problems of the industry. Through the circulation of these reports, it is hoped that sufficient interest may develop among lime-plant operators to prompt them to discuss with the bureau their our experiences with these problems. By such an interchange of ideas, it is believed that conclusion may be reached which will be of practical benefit to try entire industry. "A knowledge of the carbon dioxide (002) content of the products of combustion, particularly from the boiler furnace, is very valuable. An instantaneous indication of the CO2 can be used as a useful guide to efficient burning. A permanent record over a. period of time gives a story to the management which tends to keep the operators more alert. Many instruments that indicate and record CO2 have appeared within the last fifteen years. More are about to appear. Although simple principles involving chemical, physical, or electrical qualities, are being used, there is at present a general feeling of uncertainty about such instruments in the boiler room any instruments are bought, run awhile, then lie idle indefinitely.Inquiries as to CO2 machines continually come to the Bureau of Mines from the general public, as well as from other branches of the Government. Some ten years ago a series of tests was made on certain instruments at that time on the market. The following test was made quite recently on four of the newer types, including one using an electrical principle. The four instruments were installed on one boiler each, according to the instructions of the makers, and the recommended routine attention was given them. The test was of a service nature duplicating the conditions under which the instruments ordinarily serve. The boiler that was available for this purpose was practically banked for some hours of the night. This caused the average CO2 for the entire twenty-four hours to be rather low, although it reached the higher ranges of the instruments during the day.Each day the charts were averaged and the results plotted to form the accompanying curve. The record of each instrument is shown by its particular mark, the dot, circle, cross and square being used in addition there is plotted for each day a rectangular area representing 1 % CO2 in height. The proper positions of this area was determined by means of the Crsat. Where the plotted point for an instrument falls within the rectangel its accuracy is within 1/2% CO2, which is considered satisfactory. Where it falls outside the rectangle, inaccuracy is indicated."

1. COAL PRODUCTION: Under Section 402 of Public Law 95-87 (SMCRA), coal operators are required to pay a fee when coal is sold, used, or transferred. These fees are deposited in the U.S. treasury as the Abandoned Mine Land Fund. Information about the type of coal (bituminous, lignite, or underground) and tonnage are tabulated on Form OSM-1 and submitted with the fee, which is paid quarterly to the Office of Surface Mining. The coal production data presented in this report was compiled from information stored in the Office of Surface Mining Fee Collection System computer data base. Collection of the fee began with the last quarter of 1977; therefore, 1978 data includes the last quarter of 1977 and the first three quarters of 1978. Information for each successive year follows the same tabulation pattern. Surface production includes both bituminous and lignite coal; underground includes tonnage reported as underground mined. In New Mexico and Montana, coal production on Indian land is listed under the Crow, Hopi, and Navajo Tribes. 2. HISTORIC COAL PRODUCTION: Federal Government agencies have published coal production data since 1807, the date of the earliest record. The source of coal production data used to compile this graph was: 1891-1895, U.S. Geological Survey, Division of Mineral Resources; 1896-1977, U.S. Bureau of Mines annual Minerals Yearbook; 1978- 1991, Office of Surface Mining data described in footnote 1 above. 3. NUMBER OF MINES: The number of mines was compiled from Office of Surface Mining Fee Collection System data described in footnote 1 above. Annual totals were calculated by adding together the number of operations with the same Mine Safety and Health Administration numbers reported each quarter and dividing by four to give an annual number in each state. 4. ENFORCEMENT ACTIONS: Enforcement action data was compiled from annual reports developed by Office of Surface Mining field offices and historical field office records. The data presented are all actions taken by both the state regulatory authority and the Office of Surface Mining. Citations issued are the sum of Notice of Violations (NOVs) and Cessation Orders (COs). Because the Hopi and Navajo jurisdictions overlap in Arizona and New Mexico, enforcement actions data for the tribes have been combined in annual reports prepared by the Albuquerque Field Office; therefore, they are combined for this report and listed under Navajo Tribe. 5. ACREAGE PERMITTED: Acreage permitted data was compiled from annual reports developed by Office of Surface Mining field offices and historical field office records. The acreage listed was permitted during the year shown and is not the total acreage under permit during that year. 6. BONDS RELEASED: Acreage of reclamation bonds released was compiled from annual reports developed by Office of Surface Mining field offices and historical field office records. The sum of final Interim Regulatory Program bonds and Phase 111 (or final release) bonds shows only the land area where reclamation is complete and has been released by the regulatory authority.

On the Pacific coast during World War II, a tremendous ship-building industry was developed, Early in the war it became impossible to obtain in- got or steel scrap for ship ballast. Magnetite, an oxide of iron, was sub- stituted as it fulfilled the requirements of weight for available space in the ships. Consequently, a new use for the western magnetite was rapidly developed.

"Exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres has long posed a serious hazard to miners. The control of these hazards, some of which can have sudden and catastrophic effects and some others, slow and long enduring consequences, has been a major concern for labor, management and government alike. This concern has manifested itself in four primary mechanisms of control -- (1) regulatory control through minimum standard setting by the passage of mine health and safety laws, (2) engineering control through design and operation of 'mines according to the best recommended practices, (3) medical control through periodic physical examinations, wearing personal protection devices, etc., and (4) legal and social control through workmen's compensation laws for occupation related health deterioration:-The respirable contaminants in mine atmo¬spheres are toxic and explosive gases, toxic and explosive dusts, diesel exhaust particu¬lates, radon progeny, etc. Perhaps the most important of all these and the most widely occurring in mine atmospheres is respirable dust, an inevitable product of fragmentation, a unit operation fundamental to all mining operations. In fact; the-most serious health hazard for workers in the mining and minerals processing industries is still the exposure to respirable dust, and solutions to the problem of respirable dust disease remain to be found.The 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act and its provisions for the respirable dust standards in underground coal mines are briefly reviewed. An overview of the research accomplishments in meeting the standards is presented. The current state of knowledge on the effectiveness of the standards and the new and emerging problems are discussed. A brief summary of the research programs of the Generic Technology Center on Respirable Dust is presented.In general, underground mines are becoming increasingly safe. This report deals with the processing and marketing of iron and steal scrap in the intermountain States of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming and the northwestern Plains States of Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The quantity and quality of iron and steel scrap consumed in both the steel mills and iron foundries in these States in 1964 were decided by (1) the type of facilities used to produce an end product; (2) the availability of a dependable source of iron and steel scrap at competitive prices; and (3) the, ratio of the cost of iron in iron ore to iron in scrap. In recent years the quantity of scrap used per ton of steel ingot produced has decreased. The major individual. consumers of iron and steel scrap were the steel mills in Arizona, Colorado, and Utah, foundries in Utah and Arizona, and copper leaching, operations in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. About 2 million tons of iron and steel scrap was used by the iron and steel industry in 1964. Although there has been a decline in the amount of scrap used per ton of steel ingot produced because of changes in steelmaking methods, there has been a slight increase in the overall quantity of scrap used because of the increase in ingot production. It is estimated that the scrap consumption in the steel industry will increase by 19 percent by 1980. In addition to the scrap consumed by the steel industry, 273,000 tons of ferrous scrap were used by copper-leaching operations. Thirty-one percent of the ferrous scrap used by the steel industry in 1964 was purchased from dealers and other sources. The CF&I Steel Corp. (formerly The Colorado Fuel and Iron Corp.) at Pueblo, Colo., complemented its blast- and open-hearth-furnace operations with basic-oxygen converters in 1962. The basic-oxygen and open-hearth furnaces were charged with 30 and 90 percent scrap, respectively. Future use of the open-hearths would probably be used to supplement ingot production requirements. Because it was more economical to use less scrap and a high molten-metal charge, the United States Steel Corp. at Geneva, Utah, which uses the open-hearth process to make steel, charges the furnaces with 25 to 35 percent scrap. The Allison Steel Manufacturing Co. at Tempe, Ariz., uses a 100 percent scrap charge in its electric furnace. Although it was estimated that there were 327,000 tons of various grades of motor vehicle scrap generated in 1963, no estimates were made concerning the total quantity and grade of scrap available in the area. Most of the scrap used in the steelmaking industry originated within the area. It was advantageous to sell scrap generated in eastern Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota to markets in the Midwest because of freight costs.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, cooperated with Tecrete Industries Pty. Ltd. and BHP Australia Coal in a research program to evaluate the strength characteristics and air leakage of four seal and two stopping designs for use in underground coal mines. A fundamental safety research area for NIOSH is to eliminate the occurrence of coal mine explosions or to mitigate their effects. One approach to achieve this goal is to develop new and innovative seal designs that provide increased explosion isolation protection for the mining personnel against ignitions that originate from within the gob or. other worked-out areas of the mine Full-scale seals and stoppings were constructed in the Experimental Mine at Lake Lynn Laboratory near Fairchance, Fayette County, PA. They were ail--leakage tested, then subjected to a series of explosions with average pressure pulses ranging from 25 to 500 kPa (3.5 to 72 psi). Instrumentation measured seal displacement and acceleration as a function of time, providing data to assist in the development of numerical models 1&apos;01- future seal design. All three seals designed with Meshblock wire forlnwo~-k ant1 a lnonolithic shotcrete core withstood the first explosion test, which generated an avcr-age rnaximu~n pressure of - 140 kPa (-20 psi) while maintaining acceptable air leakage rates. These seals I-anged from 175 to 325 mm thick. They included a 2.7-m-high by 325-mm-thick seal that was tesled 27 hr after completion against this - 140-kPa explosion pressure, a special requirement of the test program. This seal survived explosions with pressure pulses up to 300 kPa (43 psi). The 2.3-m-high by 325-mm-thick Meshblock seal survived three explosion tests with overpressures up to 455 kPa (66 psi) and satisfied the air leakage criteria. A I ,200-mm-thick plug seal was constructed of two Gunmesh formwork walls in-filled with shotcrete and a 3,450-kPa (500-psi) strength Aquablend core. This plug seal survived three explosions with pressure pulses ranging 11-om 150 lo 430 kPa (-22 to 62.5 psi) with no measurable postexplosion air leakage. Two Gunmesh stoppings with thicknesses 01&apos; 40 and 75 inln withstood explosion overpressures of 23 and 115 kPa, respectively. Anchoring all seal and stopping designs into the roof, ribs, and floor with steel "rootbolts" provided very effective boundary constraint that is critical to the performanceofstructures subject to explosion overpressures.
