This report presents the results of a research and development program in recovering waste-rolling oils conducted by the Bethlehem Steel Co., before 1954 at its Sparrows Point plant, Sparrow Point, Md., with the cooperation of the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, College Park, Md. The objective of the program was twofold: First, to recover oil for reuse in the plant; and second, to stop pollution, by oil, of the stream and harbor areas in the immediate vicinity of the plant. The sequence of the investigations was laboratory and pilot plant studies on sedimentation, simple aeration, and flotation for the separation of oil and water; and construction of a production unit using standard flotation equipment. This work was only preliminary for the Bethlehem Steel Co. and it has continued research on this problem. Recent progress indicates that new, improved processes will soon replace the flotation units described in this report. The first efforts to separate oil and water by simple sedimentation were unsuccessful. To establish the cause of this failure, microscope examinations and measurements were made on cold-reduction rolling mill cooling-water effluents containing oil in suspension. It was discovered that an average oil globule, held in suspension, was only 0.001 inch in diameter and would not coagulate with other globules for normal sedimentation at room temperature. The next step in the sequence of studies was to coagulate the oil suspension by simple aeration with air under slight pressure. The aeration methods studied were effective in removing up to 68 percent of the total oil but were approaching flotation in principle. The final investigation of the series was flotation of the oil in conventional laboratory-size flotation cells. The small-bubble method, without reagents, floated up to 89 percent of the total oil held in suspension and was the process selected for pilot-plant development.

Results of the U.S. Bureau of Mines' survey of mineral resources in the Cuyama RARE II study area indicate there is no potential for metallic minerals and low potential for the development of gypsum resources. There are no producing or developing mines within the study area. The Santa Barbara Canyon Prospect contains 30,000 tons (27,000 t) of subeconmic gyspum resources, the Wagon Road Prospect 276,000 tons (250,000 t), and the Brush Fence Canyon 61,000 tons (55,000 t). Most of the resource in the Brush Fence Canyon Prospect is outside the area. Gypsum was not observed at the Cuyama River deposit. Present gypsum and gypsite requirements are being met by larger deposits closer to major markets. A field examination of known mineral properties was made in October 1980; it included mapping and sampling of prospects to evaluate the economic potential of mineral resources.

High-temperature enthalpy and X-ray powder diffraction studies were con-ducted on aluminum sulfide (Al2S3) as part of the Bureau of Mines effort to provide new data for the advancement of mineral technology consistent with environmental preservation and energy conservation. Relative enthalpies were measured with a copper-block calorimeter from 298.15 to 879 K. Tabulated values are listed for heat capacity, entropy, Gibbs energy functions, and relative enthalpies between 298.15 and 900 K. Enthalpies were also given in the form of an equation and combined with published data to calculate standard enthalpies of formation and Gibbs energies of formation for reactions of crystalline aluminum with crystalline, liquid, and gaseous diatomic sulfur. The hexagonal, rhombohedral, and cubic phases of Al2S3 were identified by X-ray powder diffraction studies, and the indexed powder diffraction patterns of these phases are given. The hexagonal phase was stable to about 852 K and was partially converted to the rhombohedral form at 879 K.

The productive capacity of natural gasoline and cycling plants in the United States or. January 1, 1954, was 926 thousand barrels per day, according to the Bureau of Mines biennial survey. This represented an increase of 114 thousand barrels per day during the 2-year period since the last survey. In the previous 2-year period, capacity had increased 164 thousand barrels per day. The total number of plants increased from 521 on January 1, 1952, to 535 on January 1, 1954. The number of operating plants increased from 506 to 521. The major increases in capacity took place in Texas, Illinois, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and New Mexico, with the absorption-type plant continuing to account for most of the new construction. In 1954, however, 6 plants reported using a refrigeration process whereas only 1 plant reported this in 1952. The number of operating compression-type plants continued to decline and combination plants showed a decline this year because a number of these plants were reclassified as absorption-type.

A shortage of anthracite for home heating indicates the necessity of using other fuels for this purpose; low-volatile bituminous, or "soft" coal is the most feasible supplementary fuel, either burned alone or when mixed with anthracite. Comparison of Bituminous Coal and Anthracite Whereas anthracite is clean, burns without smoke, and requires little attention, bituminous coal is dusty, tends to burn with a smoky flame, and forms coke in the fire pot that must be broken up to maintain a continuous high output of heat. When properly fired, however, bituminous coal responds more quickly than anthracite to changes in damper settings and consequently can supply more heat in a short time. It is generally less expensive and usually contains less ash than anthracite.

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unpre- cedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 400,00 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country's oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the be- ginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million bar- rels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but pro- duced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation's petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. ce World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum prod- ucts has become the order of the day every day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has been increased enough to meet domestic require- ments by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the over-all daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 50 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields - having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly or perhaps more rapidly than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each, were discovered and proved - an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year's supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the num- ber of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. "INTRODUCTION Laboratory mineral-dressing investigations covered by this report show that ores from Montgomery County, Ark., and Morgan County, Mo., are potential sources of barite and zinc. Fine grinding and froth flotation yielded drilling-grade barite from the former and chemical-grade barite and zinc concentrates from the latter.Samples from these deposits were subjected to a laboratory investigation to develop an economic and feasible treatment. The Arkansas ore, submitted by the Husky Refining Co., consisted of an intimate mixture of the economic mineral and quartz. Fine grinding and fatty acid flotation were utilized to effect a good recovery of a drilling-grade product. The other was a zinc-barite ore submitted by the Rocky Ford Mining Co., Stover, Mo. There was no problem in the recovery of zinc (most of which occurred as sphalerite), but the recovery of barite by flotation was complicated by the presence of gangue carbonates. Ultimately, an excellent recovery of barite was achieved with a relatively new type of flotation promoter, petroleum sulfonate.In recent years, barite has become one of the major industrial minerals as an essential ingredient in heavy drilling fluids, pigments, and chemicals. New sources of this important commodity are always interesting; thus, it is the purpose of this report to present information that may permit commercial exploitation of two deposits not in production."

Nine dust and gaseous inhibitors of propagating coal dust-air flames (lean, stoichiometric, and rich) were evaluated in a newly developed 15-cm-id, 3.6-meter-long instrumented flame duct, under conditions such that wall quenching was virtually absent and the dust concentration was temporally and spacially uniform to within about t5 percent. Listed roughly in order of increasing efficiency, the inhibitors evaluated were rock dust (calcium carbonate), powdered oyster shells (calcium carbonate), Halon 1301 (trifluorobromomethane), Halon 1211 (difluorochlorobromomethane), sodium chloride, Super-K (potassium chloride), regular-grade fire extinguishant powder (sodium bicarbonate), Purple-K (potassium bicarbonate), and Monnex (potassium bicarbonate combined with urea). Experiments were extended to clouds containing 1 and 2 volume-percent of methane. The inhibition of lean, stoichiometric, and rich methane-air flames without coal dust was also examined in a few instances; results agreed with those obtained for coal dust-air flames.

Steel liner plates, which are bolted together to form a shell, are commonly used to provide temporary protective linings in the tunneling industry to ensure the stability of the tunnel and safety of the workers until more permanent ground reinforcement can be installed. As the ground deforms to try and close the opening, the liner plate is radially stressed, and by deforming redistributes these loads back to the surrounding insitu earth. Grouting behind the plates is done to fill any voids and ensure uniform contact to the strata around the back of the plates. Another function of the liner plate in some applications is to act as a platform or structure for the mining machine to react against in order to develop the necessary forward thrust to be able to excavate the face. In this case, the liner plates are loaded axially as a horizontal column of bolted liner plate rings, creating a jacking force against the liner plate assembly. In general, the buckling strength of the plate sections determines the jacking force capacity. Historically, the jacking force capacity of tunnel liner plates has been theoretically determined by some simplistic equations developed from tests of single liner plates. Recently, full-scale tests on a complete circular section of bolted liner plate ring segments have been conducted in the NIOSH Safety Structures Testing Laboratory using the unique Mine Roof Simulator to apply controlled loading in a manner that simulates the real world environment. Due to the unique size and capacity of the Mine Roof Simulator, these are believed to be the first full-scale tests conducted on the jacking force capability of tunnel liner plate rings. These tests indicate that the previously used theoretical equations tend to over predict the jacking force capacity of these tunnel liner plates. Unanticipated deformations in the field have been observed at loads below these theoretical design loads, therefore, a more accurate determination of the jacking force capability was needed. This report summarizes the full-scale test results, examines design parameters that impact the jacking force capability, and develops new mathematical models to improve the prediction of design loads.

This report describes the feasibility test of an electromagnetic method for locating, boreholes, with or without casing, that have been drilled in conjunction with mining operations but whose location with respect to the tunnel is not precisely known. The first tests were conducted with the cooperation of the Kerr-McGee Corporation, Church Rock Mining Operations, New Mexico, in September 1977. These tests demonstrated that accuracies of better than ±15% of range and ±1° of bearing can be achieved with a simple system and setups. Subsequent tests, in January 1978, on a horizontally drilled pipe line river crossing application, by Ti tan Contractors of Sacramento, California, demonstrated that accuracies of better than one-half percent of range and a few tenths of one degree of bearing can be achieved by using refined techniques. The demonstration tests were done at ranges on the order of 100 to 200 feet but the method is capable of working at much greater distances.

The enormous deposits of greensand in New Jersey and elsewhere in the United States, many of them close to important octant industrial centers, constitute a perpetual challenge for research chemists to convert them into a commercial asset of national importance. Following the introduction of more concentrated fertilizers, comprising synthetic mixtures of more soluble salts, the quantity of greensand used directly upon the soil has diminished, but deposits of such material still have at least potential value locally for use not only as fertilizer but also as a water softener. An annotated bibliography of the already extensive Literature on greensand, virtually complete to about the end of 1929, has been issued by the Bureau of Mines3/, and the commercial aspects as well as the technology of greensand utilization are discussed in available publications, The purpose of the present circular, therefore, is merely to provide a brief outline of certain general essential considerations for use in appraising the potential value of a greensand deposit in any given locality.

Following an unsuccessful attempt earlier in the program to develop and market a drill channelling machine, we have designed and tested a new continuous channelling method which reduces operating sound levels to below 100 db. This new method relies on a small diameter oxygen-enriched burner to produce narrow channels. Sound intensities are reduced substantially compared to conventional channel widths. They are further reduced by a water spray directed immediately above the flame. Baffles placed along the top of the channel will reduce sound levels to below 90 db. Cutting rates are greater than those of existing channelling burners with costs per unit of channel area substantially reduced for those cases where oxygen costs are reasonable.

The changing demographics of the mining industry make successful passing of knowledge and skills to the next generation critical. Training methods and technologies are being developed to meet this need. Twenty years ago classroom training was largely a one-way transfer of knowledge through instructor lectures. In contrast, instructors today can use virtual reality technologies to guide trainees as they fully participate in learning experiences. Trainees can interact with the virtual work environment, co-workers, and equipment without being exposed to workplace hazards. The speed of advancement in mine safety, health, and production training shows no sign of slowing in the next 20 years. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health have studied and participated in the evolution of miner training. A look at training materials they have created in the past and those they are currently developing reveals changes in methods and technologies over time and also key characteristics which have remained constant. Possibilities for the future can he discussed in the framework of an implementation of virtual reality in new miner training sessions. The example computer-based training package teaches new miners to read mine maps and provides opportunity to practice navigation skills in a virtual mine. With this 'serious game', trainees experience the look and feel of moving through an underground coal mine while in the safety of their classroom. During field-testing in 2007, trainees and instructors responded very favourably to this new way of learning. The software was usable by mine trainers with even limited computer expertise and could be installed on the affordable computers they were using for their more traditional slide presentations. The Underground Coal Mine Map Reading Training's foundation on past successful development strategies and its acceptance by today's instructors and trainees provide valuable lessons for developing training materials, strategies, and technologies for mining's future.

The United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the State of Colorado at the University of Colorado has conducted experiments to determine the amount and composition of the non-condensable gases evolved when crude shale oil is distilled under pressure. Hydrogen sulphide is one of the components found in the complex mixture of Gases produced by the distillation of shale oil under pressure. This paper deals with the apparatus and method used in determining the amount of hydrogen sulphide evolved in the laboratory experimental cracking stills. The study required a complete extraction of all the hydrogen sulphide from the gas stream after it left the water-cooled distillate condensers and before the gas stream entered the charcoal absorber for removing the light naphtha. In devising the method it was necessary to take into account a constant variation of velocity, pressure, and percentage of sulphide in the total gas stream coming from the still. Ordinarily, the quantitative determination of hydrogen sulphide in gas is made by analyzing small samples taken at regular intervals. This estimation can be accomplished by use of the Bunts gas burette as modified by Tutriler, or by a similar method. In the industries where the flow of gas is constant and of uniform composition, this practice is sufficiently accurate for plant control. For experimental work where many variables have to be taken into consideration, as in the case at band; these methods are not applicable.

Current Bureau projects covering mine-monitoring systems are described, and some of the major areas of concern that should be addressed by future projects are outlined.

"INTRODUCTION The domestic production of potash has made rapid strides in the past 4 years. In 1929 the United States produced 109,820 tons of potash-bearing material, equivalent to 61,590 tons of pure potash (K20). In 1933 to this had increased to 331,110 tons, containing 143,378 tons of potash, due chiefly to the development of the potash deposits near Carlsbad, N. Mex. The potash ores of that district occur at a depth of about 1,000 feet and as mined consist of a mixture known as sylvinite containing about 40 parts of sylvite (KC1) and 60 parts of halite (NaCl). By careful mining the extraneous material does not amount to more than 2 or 3 per cent. Such ore was used in the experimental work here reported.The usual chemical method for the recovery of potash from sylvinite, while efficient in the production of pure potassium chloride, requires,expensive equipment and is costly to operate. It occurred to the Bureau of Mines that ore-dressing methods, which have been applied to other nonmetallic minerals, might be adapted for the production of a grade of potash suitable for the fertilizer industry. After preliminary study by the Bureau of Mines showed that ore-dressing treatment was possible the investigation was extended under a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the Potash Company of America, and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSAcknowledgment is here given for valuable assistance in the laboratory of R. "When, in 1973, a limit was placed on the amount of dust in the coal mine atmosphere, restricting the average exposure of a coal miner to 2 milligrams of dust per cubic meter of air (mg/m'), skeptics in the United States and abroad Said the standard could never be achieved. They cited much more lenient standards already established in other countries and refused to believe that the United States could meet the world's most stringent requirements in mines where dust had never before been regulated. Yet 10 years later the goal had largely been achieved and miners were working underground in a cleaner atmosphere than ever before. It was a major achievement and a big stride in what had become a war on coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), the black lung disease prevalent among miners in underground coal mines.Although the health hazards caused by working in a dust-filled mine atmosphere have long been recognized, the problem became particularly acute in this century with the mechanization and increased productivity of underground coal mining. The United States was much slower than some other countries to address the problem of respirable diseases among miners. While dust levels in South African gold mines were first regulated in 1912, in the United States it was only when 476 workers died of silicosis while blasting a tunnel through a mountain near Gauley Bridge, West Virginia in the 1930s that widespread public attention became focused on the plight of workers in dust-filled environments. Another 30 years passed before regulation of dust finally became law in the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969.With a stringent new standard imposed in all underground coal mines, the industry was faced With the daunting problem of reducing levels of airborne dust from perhaps 6.5 mg/m' to 2 mg/m', in an inherently dusty operation carried out in the close confines of underground passageways. Most of the coal dust is made by the cutting operation in which the continuous miner or longwall machine can produce several thousand milligrams of respirable dust for each ton of coal mined. Other dusty operations such as drilling holes for roofbolts, loading and unloading coal on shuttle cars, and the operation of conveyor belts contribute to the overall problem.Since the institution of the new dust control standards, a number of strategies have been adopted for reducing the coal dust in the mine atmosphere. These strategies involve engineering and design improvements that help lo prevent the generation of particles, keep particles of dust from becoming airborne, carry dust away from the working area, and isolate the dust from the workers in the mining operation. These procedures have been pursued vigorously by the Bureau of Mines, and many successful methods have been developed to reduce the mass concentration to which the workers are subjected. The mining companies were reluctant at first to confront the problems but after a period of trials and gradual improvement, they joined with others in the fight to reduce the dust concentrations in the working place."
