"INTRODUCTION The strategic importance of zinc warranted investigation of the Silver Eagle zinc prospect, which was first examined by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in January 1943.From October 12, 1943, to March 16, 1944, the Bureau explored the deposit by trenching, core drilling, and sampling to establish the amount and grade of ore and to test for the presence of sulfide-ore minerals at depth.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Mercury is one of the strategic metals the supply of which has been raised from critical uncertainty to more than enough for essential demands. Work by the Bureau of Mines has contributes substantially to increased production of mercury in the United States and to consequent accumulation of Governments stock. Other contributing factors were higher prices for mercury and Government loans to operators. The Bureau has undertaken 15 exploration projects, 13 of which have been completed. This work comprised 40,307 feet of drilling arid 35,082 linear feet of sure ace trenching and has indicated commercial ore containing 37,400 flasks of mercury and marginal ore contain¬ing 29,200 flasks - a total of 66,600 flask , equivalent, respectively, to domestic production at 50,000 flasks per year for 9 months , 7 months, and 16 months. Early in 1944, as Government stocks had become adequate, domestic production was gradually curtailed cancellation of Government contracts for the purchase of mercury and Government control of labor and operating supplies.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the use of organic binders as substitutes for bentonite in agglomerating iron ore concentrate. Over 30 organic binders were evaluated at several dosage levels in laboratory tests. The binder groups producing the greatest green pellet strengths were natural gums (guars carboxyl methyl celluloses) and gelled starches. The nongelled and alkalized starches, starch acrylic copolymers) wood-related products, and dairy products were less effective but better than bentonite. The highest wet pellet drop numbers were obtained with binders that had a medium plate water absorption value (>500 and <10)000) in distilled water and a high slurry viscosity (>75 cP) at 6 pet solids. The highest dry compressive strengths were obtained with binders that gave the highest adhesive tensile strength (>4 kg/ cm2) on iron oxide lap-joint substrates. Pellets with 0.1 pct organic binder had lower compressive strengths and reduction disintegration indices than those with 1 pct bentonite, but higher reduction rates. Pellets with carboxyl methyl cellulose and gelled starch had higher softening temperatures than those with bentonite. Overall, the most promising binder is gelled starch. Its price makes it more cost effective than carboxyl methyl cellulose, and its pellets have metallurgical properties superior to those of bentonite pellets.

"Freshly ground and aged anthracite and bituminous coal samples were investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy to detect the presence, concentration and reactivity of free radicals. Freshly ground anthracite coal produced greater concentration of free radicals than the bituminous coal, and the radical reactivity was also greater for the anthracite. The reactivity of the newly produced free radicals in the anthracite dust correlated with the dust's toxicity. Furthermore similar coal-based free radicals were detected in the lung tissue of autopsied coal miners, suggestive of persistent reactivity by the embedded coal dust leading to the progressive disease process. Results of the studies on the severity of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) and free radical concentration m lung tissue support this hypothesis.INTRODUCTIONCOAL WORKERS' PNEUMOCONIOSIS (CWP) has been an important topic of concern to miners, mining engineers, epidemiologists and medical researchers for decades. It is well known that the prevalence and severity of CWP differ markedly between different regions and mines despite comparable exposures to respirable dust (REISNER and RoBOCK, 1977; HURLEY et al., 1979). These variations in pathogenicity of coal mine dusts can only partially be explained by differences in the mineral composition and by rank of coal (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al., 1980). Cytotoxity studies on mammalian cells do not correspond well with the human disease pattern (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al.,1980; VALL YA THAN et al., 1988). For example, while epidemiological studies of coal miners (REISNER and ROBECK, 1977; HURLEY et al., 1979) indicate that the prevalence of CWP correlates roughly with the rank of coal, such correlation has not yet been established in biological studies, despite considerable effort (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al., 1980). In order to help resolve this apparent paradox we have undertaken a systematic study to evaluate whether any correlation exists between the concentration of free radicals present in fresh or aged coal dusts from two well-characterized U.S. coals. This study was also prompted in part by observations reported in the literature that organic free radicals can be formed on the surface of freshly fractured coals (LEBEDEV et al., 1978; DULIBA and CLARKSON, 1984). In particular, ARTEMOV and REZNIK (1980) noted that the decay lifetimes and, hence, the reactivity of the organic free radicals formed on crushing Russian coals, .depended"

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the synthesis of advanced ceramics (SiC+AlN, SiAlON, SiC+A1203, and Si3N4+AlN) from natural clays (kaolin, halloysite, or montmorillonite) by an intercalation and heat treatment method. This process includes the steps of refining a clay, intercalating organic chemicals into its layered structure, drying the intercalated mixture, firing the treated structure at certain temperature ranges in controlled atmospheres to form desired compounds, and grinding the loosely agglomerated structure. Focus of this research is to economically process advanced ceramic structures from abundant natural resources. The advanced ceramic phases produced in this simple treatment are homogeneously distributed at the nanostructure level, and may potentially lead to cost effective manufacturing processes. The intercalation of clay was confirmed by X-ray and BET analyses. The evolution of chemical compositions during carbonization reactions and carbothermal reduction was investigated. The characteristics of refined clays and synthesized powders were studied. Advanced ceramic composites/solid solution have been produced from intercalated clays, without the presence of other compounds.

"INTRODUCTION The Sullivan Mine was examined by Thomas L. Chapman, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in March 1943. Samples taken from the few mineralized exposures justified further investigation of the property. During some distillation experiments conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Trent Process Corporation it was observed that amalgams of heavy petroleum oils and finely pulverized coal tended to produce a denser coke than that obtainable from the coal when retorted alone . Even anthracite coal when retorted with oil yielded a coke . This led the writers to believe that by mixing a lowrank coal ( sub-bituminous or even lignite ) - with asphaltic oil and retorting it, a coke suitable for domestic fuel could be made . Thus there was contemplated the production of domestic coke and the utilization of a low- grade oil in one operation . - In order to decide on the practicability of this process , it was necessary to know the value of products obtainable by such a method , as compared with those obtained by separate distillation . A laboratory method was therefore devised , and while it was realized that no small - scale testing apparatus for destructive distillation gives results that are directly applicable to commercial - scale operations , by keeping distillation conditions uniform for comparative tests , results were obtained valuable for purposes of comparison . The plan was to distill mixtures of coal and oil in a laboratory retort , and then distill the constituents separately under the same conditions . The comparative quantities of products yielded were thus directly obtained , and their quality was determined by analysis . The following are the main points investigated : ( 1 ) Quantity and quality of coke ; ( 2 ) Quantity of oils boiling below 221 °C . ( gasoline stock) and oils boiling at 221 to 300° C . ( kerosene stock) ; and ( 3) Quantity and quality of gases .

This paper is one of a series prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines dealing with milling methods and costs. In view of the current revival of interest in gold mining, information dealing with practices and costs in the development of gold properties is apropos. Milling practice at a small gold property in the prospect stage is described where, with a small outlay for plant and equipment, development has been carried on for about 20 months on the proceeds of the mill operation with little additional expenditure. The paper shows about what may be expected as to costs at a small property operated under northern climatic conditions and with rigid economy throughout the plant.

"INTRODUCTION Oxide manganese ore from the Sheep Mountain property was of intermediate grade (23.0 percent manganese) and contained silica as the major impurity. The deposit from which the ore was taken is known as the Sheep Mountain manganese property and is 8 miles west of Durkee, Oreg. Test work was done in the metallurgical laboratories of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, Utah, on representative samples cut from a 290-pound shipment of crushed ore submitted by the Oregon State Department of Geology and Mineral Industries and reported to be typical of the Sheep Mountain deposit.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe authors wish to acknowledge the assistance of R. "In matte smelting of copper it has been established that the sulphpr present will combine with copper as long as the latter is present, and that thereafter it will combine with iron. The Cu-Fe ratio in the matte is determined by the Cu-S ratio, presumably owing to the much greater affinity of copper for sulphur or, expressed thermodynamically, the greater stability of copper sulphide in contact with silicate slag. Now, the work of Fournet and of Schütz, which is quoted in many elementary metallurgical texts, indicates that manganese ranks ahead of copper in its affinity for sulphur. Hence, we might expect that manganese could be concentrated from its admixture with iron. Compounds by matte smelting, and Rotts / has patented such a process. This greater affinity of manganese or sulphur is used to advantage in iron metallurgy, also, in which it is well-known that sulphur will combine with manganese and separate from metallic iron as manganese sulphide. Manganese sulphide,however, is quite soluble in silicate slags. 5/ The loss of manganese in slag in any attempted matte smelting is therefore great.If this solubility of manganese sulphide is slag is a physical one and the reaction MnO + FeS MnS + FeOIs substantially complete, then it might be expected that the addition of copper sulphide, which is almost entirety insoluble in slag, would serve to extract the manganese sulphide with the formation of a manganese-copper matte on the other hand, if an equilibrium exists in the above reaction, a copper sulphide layer would displace that equilibrium in one direction or the other, according to whether iron sulphide or manganese sulphide were more soluble in the matter layer."

"Among the recently patented detonating compounds that have been suggested as substitutes for the commonly used fulminate of mercury is the normal lead salt of trinitroresorcin, or styphnic acid. As no data concerning its use or practi¬cability were available, a study of its properties was made in the explosives laboratory at the Bureau of Mines experiment station at Pittsburgh, Pa. This paper embodies the results obtained.Normal lead trinitroresorcinate was first prepared and patented*** by Herz; it probably found some use during the World War, but no record of its performance is available,Preparation of Lead Trinitrpresorcinate.In his patent specifications, Herz states that the normal salt may be obtained in a quantitative way by precipitating a multiple of the equivalent weight of the lead salt of a strong inorganic acid - such as lead nitrate - in the presence of a weak organic acid - such as acetic acid - by heating with a Teak solution of the alkali-metal salts or alkaline-earth salts of trinitroresorcin. Herz gives the following example: 245 grams of dry trinitroresorcinand 290 grams of crystalline sodium carbonate are dissolved in in 18.8 liters of boiling water, to which 77 c.c. of glacial acetic acid is added. The toiling solution is mixed with a boiling solution of 650 grams of lead nitrate in 1.4 liters of water, stirring rapidly; and the mixture is boiled for two minutes, after which it is cooled quickly with constant stirring. The precipitated crystals are then filtered off, washed several times with cold water, and dried."

If you missed this year?s Texas State Holmes Safety Association meeting, you missed a great one. On January 23 & 24, 2009, we held the meeting that was rescheduled when Hurricane Ike threatened Corpus Christi in September 2008. Sixty-five persons from across the state attended the meeting held at the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach. The weather was 82 degrees, and the sky was clear and perfect for a safety meeting. Evaluations submitted by the attendees gave the presentations, the networking, and even the food top marks. There were eight councils represented; Big Country, Central Texas, Costal Bend, Heart of Texas, Hill Country, North Texas and North Central. Presentations included Workplace Examinations, Emergency Preparedness, Screen Safety, Contractor Responsibilities, Powered Haulage, Supervising for Safety, and Basic Inspections of Slings and Rigging. Mr. Edward Lopez, SC MSHA District Manager, gave the State of the District Address.

As a part of the general chromite investigation in California designed to aid In the production of chromite during the recent war emergency, the Bureau of Mines explored the Coggins property in Siskiyou County, Work by the Bureau in cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey began in October 1942 and was concluded in March 1943. This report presents a brief history of the mine, outlines the physical features of the district, describes the deposits) and explains the work completed by the Bureau of Mines, Table 1 shows the analysis of diamond drill-hole samples. The logs of drill holes are in the appendix.

System objectives and design criteria for an in-mine ULF radio paging system are discussed. Coding formats, frequency and bandwidth selection criteria leading to the system design are discussed. The prototype call alert transmitter and pocket page receiver is functionally described. The report includes circuit descriptions, schematics, parts lists, printed circuit fabrication and assembly drawings. The report concludes with an estimate of the manufacturing cost for each assembly.

A radon survey was made at five different locations in the Twilight mine near Uravan, Colo., to determine chances in radon concentrations in an inactive mine. Data were taken with a continuous monitor set for 1-minute count periods and readings were taken 24 hours a day for 9 days. The 12 readings per station each hour accurately showed how t w radon concentration varied during the day. From the data collected from the intake portal to station 4, the average radon emanation rate was estimated at 18 picocuries per second per square foot (pCi/sec/ft3). A daily cycle in radon concentration was detected that apparently was related to barometric pressure change.

In 1986 at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 2 acre North Sisters Rocks Wilderness Study Area (OR-12-8) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The Wilderness Study Area is located in Curry County, Oregon, about 15 miles north from Gold Beach. No mines, prospects, or mining claims were located inside the study area, and no mineral resources were identified. Stone from the study area could be quarried and used for construction purposes; however, two nearby quarries have sufficient stone to satisfy local construction needs. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and mineral resource potential of the North Sisters Rocks WSA (Wilderness Study Area) 1/ at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the North Sisters Rocks WSA for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data for the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.

In view of present interest in a revival of gold mining enterprises, papers dealing with the development of small gold properties are apropos. The present paper deals with the operation of a small gold property in the exploration and development stage, mining and milling 25 tons of ore daily, and indicates what may he expected in the way of mining costs under northern climatic conditions, by practicing rigid economy, at a property where disproportionate overhead costs are unavoidable bacause of the small rate of production. The output of this prospect is treated in a small amalgamation plant which has been described in a previous circular.. HISTORY Prospecting in the district was begun in 1909, and by 1911 the adjoining mines, Hollinger and McIntyre, were in operation. Actual work was begun on the Rochester claim in July, 1922, and carried on through 1924. The property was closed until 1928 when the present company took it over, together with the other holdings of the Canadel Mining Co. A small mill was started as a pilot plant on March 24, 1929, and is still in operation.

Data on the consumption of reagents used in flotation during the years 1923 and 1924, in metallurgical plants in the Unites States, are presented in this paper. Two previous reports Lave been issued by the Bureau of Mines on consumption of oils and other reagents used to flotation - namely, "Statement of Flotation Oils," by O. C. Ralston, issued in 1913, and Serial No. 2203, "Consumption of Reagents Used in Flotation," by Thomas Varley, for the year 1919, issued in January, 1921.

The solubility of methane, carbon dioxide, and oxygen was measured in brines at temperatures from 0° to 300° as part of Federal Bureau of Mines research on the corrosion of metals in high-temperature geothermal and mineral processing environments. Solubilities were measured by the technique of extracting pure gas, dissolved at pressures where Henry&apos;s law was applicable, from known volumes of brine. The results were smoothed with respect to temperature. The solubility, expressed in terms of the Henry&apos;s law constant, reaches a maximum at temperatures ranging from 60° to 100° C for methane and oxygen, and from 160° to 170° C for carbon dioxide. The Henry&apos;s law constant increases, that is, gases are salted out of the brines, in the presence of dissolved salts. Salting-out coefficients are strongly dependent upon temperature. The temperature dependence of the Henry&apos;s law constant for geothermal brines is different from that for sodium chloride brines owing to the more complex chemistry of the geothermal brines. The solubility of oxygen and carbon dioxide in brines exposed to air saturated with water vapor and at a total pressure of 760 mm Hg is reported for temperatures from 0° C to the normal boiling point.

Analytical, geographical, and geological data on 67 samples of crude oils from Utah are presented, along with some correlations and interpretations. Most of the, geologic formations that produce oil in other areas are also productive in Utah; and as in many other locations, the Permian, Pennsylvanian, and Mississippian formations account for the major amount of the total oil produced in the State. Some anomalies and unusual phenomena are noted. Although most Utah oils are low in sulfur, a sample containing the highest percentage of sulfur ever recorded by the Bureau of Mines is among the oils discussed in this paper. Most of the oil from the major producing formations in Utah is low in sulfur; the same formations produce high-sulfur oils in adjoining Rocky Mountain States. Some Utah oils are both waxy and asphaltic, an unusual combination of characteristics. Correlation index curves for some oils are shown suggesting compositional differences in oils from different producing formations. Production statistics trace the rapid rise of oil production in the State after the first commercial discovery in 1947 and indicate a decline in amounts produced since 1959, the year of peak production in Utah.
