A method of monitoring roof stability in underground mines by detecting the changes in resistivity of roof material was tested. The device built by the USBM was tested over a 16 month period at the White Pine Copper Mine in White Pine, Michigan. Three falls of ground were monitored by means of as many as 11 sensors. Data indicate a correlation between changes in resistivity and impending structural failure. Problems were encountered with the high roof electrode impedance in the winter and spring due to the drying out of the roof material. Difficulties also developed in obtaining a permanent bond between the roof rock, the conductive epoxy and the electrode plate. Some data were lost due to timer and fuse problems within the unit. These were eventually rectified.

This report is a compilation of preliminary and, in some cases, more extensive concentration experiments by the Federal Bureau of Mines on low-and medium-grade fluorspar ores from three localities in Nevada and one in California. The work was done on samples obtained from Shoshone mine, Nye County, Valery mine, Pershing County, and the Broken Hills mine, Mineral County, all in Nevada, and Dirty Weather mine, Inyo County, Calif. These investigations were made to aid in the development of domestic fluorspar resources, in line with the Bureau's long-established program of conservation of mineral resources. The treatment methods employed in the experimental work described included simulated or "heavy-liquid" gravity concentration of coarse minerals and comparatively fine-grained minerals, and flotation concentration of finely-ground minerals. These methods were attempted in order to beneficiate the ores and produce concentrates which could be marketed readily, with as high a recovery rate as possible, while using simple treatment methods suitable for small-scale operation.

The Spring Canyon Mine Rescue Association is a cooperative association supported jointly by five coal-mining companies located in Spring Canyon, Utah. The properties of mining companies the Carbon Fuel Co, Rains , Utah, the Liberty Coal Co. , Latuda, Utah, the Standard Coal Co. , Standardville , Utan, the Spring Canyon Coal Co. , Storrs , Utah, and the Peerless Coal Co. , Peerless , Utah about a mile apart and normally employ a total of 915 men , 733 underground 182 on the surface . and The Association was organized on July 5, 1921 , and Rudolph Clark, fomerly first - aid miner on U. S. Bureau of Mines Rescue Car 11 , was placed in charge. as manager . A board of directors made up of a representative from each of the cooperating companies (usually the mine superintendent ) is the governing body of the Association and the expenses are prorated on a basis of the production of each of the five mines . The Association maintains eight sets of Gibbs rescue apparatus and a motor truck fitted up as a combined rescue truck and ambulance . Additional apparatus are to be purchased . Standardville is the central camp in the canyon and has been made the headquarters of the Association . The apparatus are now kept and the truck housed in a small station, but plans have been prepared for a large station which will be built this summer . This new station will have a large apparatus room , a test chamber, a suitable room. for training, and a garage on the first floor, while above will be the living quarters of the manager . There is a good road through the canyon and the other camps are all within two and one -half miles of Standardville .

As a part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report.2/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical use depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, as well as the available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests. The selection of coal beds in Westmoreland County for coking tests was based, in part, on estimates of the coal reserves by Dowd,3/ who estimated the recoverable reserves in beds 28 inches or more thick, in thousands of tons, as follows: [ ]

[During the past several years a great deal of discussion has centered around the question of the permissible limit of sulphur content in fuels for automotive and aviation motors. Under certain conditions of operation, sulphur in motor fuels causes the formation of corrosive substances which attach bearings, wrist pins, and other parts of engines. On the other hand, in making gas¬oline from certain stocks, the gasoline fraction normally contains a relatively large proportion of sulphur compounds. By the generally used processes of reducing the sulphur content, a significant part of the gasoline fraction is lost as motor fuel, and added expenses are entailed for chemicals, labor, and other process costs. This condition has been an economic burden to some refiners of high-sulphur crudes. In some instances the treating losses have been rather severe and the treating costs relatively high, but the data presented in this paper indicate that the reduction of sulphur content of motor fuel is a problem to a relatively small number of refiners and of little or no concern to the remainder; in fact, more then 90 per cent of the 153 samples analyzed passed the Federal specification requirement, which limits the sulphur content to 0.10 -nor cent. 3 This report is based upon the results of an examination for sulphur content, Doctor test, copper strip corrosion, and color of the samples collected during January, 1930, for the twenty-first semiannual gasoline survey of the Bureau of Mines. The results of the gravity and distillation tests of the survey were published as Report of Investigations 2995. "This study by the Federal Bureau of Mines was confined to pillaring with continuous mining machines and to mines where total extraction is practiced. Many different conditions and practices in as many coalbeds as possible in Pennsylvania were observed.Pillar extraction or pillaring can be the most productive part of coal mining if done properly; but it also can be the most dangerous if done improperly.Because of the need for more careful planning before and caution during pillaring, many mining companies resort to the undesirable practice of stumping or hogging of pillars with subsequent unnecessary waste of valuable natural resources. Pillaring can be done at reasonable cost and safely, as proven at many mines where complete extraction is practiced and enviable cost and accident records are maintained.Although continuous mining machines are bulky and sometimes difficult to maneuver, they have been used with great success in pillaring. Occasionally, however, a machine is caught, or men are injured by a fall during pillar recovery. This Bureau survey was conducted to ascertain how safe and successful pillaring (especially the removal of final stumps in lifts or the final stump of a pillar), is accomplished in some mines, while others have considerable difficulty under similar conditions.The Bureau hopes the information to be presented in this publication will prove beneficial to those who wish to recover more pillar coal and to improve their accident record during such procedures."

The hydrodesulfurization characteristics of a residual fuel prepared from Wilmington, Calif., crude oil were determined at temperatures from 600° to 900° F, pressures of 200 to 800 pSig, and space velocities from 0.2 to 2.0 Vo/Vc/hr, using cobalt molybdate type catalysts. A prediction equation, developed from the experimental data, satisfactorily predicts the fraction of total sulfur that can be removed under any combination of operating conditions within the ranges investigated. Yields and properties of the low sulfur product are correlated with the fraction of total sulfur removed. Kinetic calculations show that the apparent reaction order and activation energy change with space velocity and temperature.

Shuttle cars have undeniably proved their worth as a means of transporting coal underground; however, several factors have arisen in connection with their possible improvement. This report .discusses the effect of shuttle cars that employ rough-tread and smooth-tread tires on mine roadbed, the amount of dust thrown into suspension by the use of such tire treads, and the service rendered by each type of tire. Involved, also, in this study are observations on the use of different amounts of calcium chloride on the haulageways.

The growing interest in beryllium as a structural material, and its in-creased use in recent years for atomic energy application, have led both government and industry to express concern over the inadequacy of the beryllium resources in the United States and the free world. Contemplated and proposed uses for this unique material will surpass the capacity of the domestic beryllium mining industry to supply raw material, which is presently extracted from relatively small deposits by hand sorting. The need for a simple beneficiation process for beryl ores has long been recognized by the Bureau of Mines, but to date no single process has proved satisfactory for treating deposits containing a sufficient tonnage of beryl ore to warrant commercial exploitation. As a part of the Bureau's continuing effort to develop an economical recovery process, this report describes flotation research on samples of beryl-bearing pegmatites from the George Roebling mine in Connecticut, and the Colony mine in New Hampshire. The study resulted in two methods of treatment to which the ores responded reasonably well.

In situ leach mining operations often encounter difficulty maintaining adequate leach solution flow into the are formation. Swelling and dis-persion of clay particles in the formation are often responsible for this permeability loss. Permeability and leaching tests were done in the laboratory on clayey ores to evaluate a clay-stabilizing polymer's effectiveness in preventing these problems. Test results indicate that treating the ores with the stabilizer could maintain permeabilities two to five times greater than the long-term permeabilities present in untreated ores. Both alkaline (pH 8.5) and acidic (pH 2.0) leaches were used in the permeability-leaching tests. Since in situ leaching throughput rate is directly related to permeability, these results also indicate a potentially beneficial effect on operating parameters such as capacity and injection pressure. To determine the reasons for the success of the clay stabilizers, an investigation was conducted to cieter-mine the effect of the stabilizer on clay swelling and dispersion. Clay-swelling tests indicated that the clay stabilizer reduced clay swelling. Zeta potential measurements made on fine clay particles treated with the stabilizer were compared to measurements made on untreated particles and indicated that the stabilizer was electropositive and, therefore, could reduce the degree of negative charge on the particles and their tendency to disperse or migrate.

A new type of apparatus for prerefining molten blast furnace iron and to reduce the cost of subsequent steelmaking consists of a funnel - shaped device lined with firebrick into which a horizontal stream of molten pig iron is directed tangentially at the top . The rotary motion thus induced causes the stream to flatten itself upon the wall and flow in a spiral path to the outlet ; thus , the device was termed " vortex cone .' Oxygen and other refining agents are impinged upon the flowing metal in the cone where reaction is facilitated by the large metal surface exposed and the turbulent flow pattern . Experiments with water in 1 - foot - diameter funnels provided an idealization of the flow patterns to be expected with molten iron . A brick - lined reactor 3 feet in diameter was built for desiliconizing molten pig iron in lots of 1 to 2 tons . At flow rates of 0.3 to 0.5 ton min - 1 (430 to 720 tons per day ) this apparatus was 64- to 90 - pct effective in desiliconization with oxygen efficiencies of 19 to 41 pct . Detailed experiments to develop basic engineering data are underway , and adaptation of this principle to other reactions and reactants is planned .

[At the majority of mines where flame safety lamps are used either as working lights or as a means of detecting gas, no check it made on this condition of the various parts of the lamp and their assembly other than a visual ink inspection. Although this inspection should be made carefully in view of tae serious consequence that may follow Vie use of a faulty lama, In many instances the inspection is of a perfunctory nature. The Bureau of Mines has therefore designed a small box or gallery for testing lamps for defects and improper assembly before they are taken into the mine. The test simulates the condition when a lamp is extinguished by its introduction into an explosive mixture and the operator attempts to relight the wick while the lamp contains the explosive mixture. This test is more rigorous than merely subjecting a lighted lamp to an explosive methane-air mixture. In the latter test the products of combustion tend to blanket the propagation of flame from within the lamp to the exterior, especially if there are defects at the top of the gauzes. Moreover, when the lighted lamp is subjected to an explosive methane-air mixture the methane builds up slowly within the lamp until the lower inflammable limit is attained, whereupon a feeble explosion occurs within. If the nonlighted lamps is first filled with the methane-air mixture that gives the maximum violence and is than ignited, the dampening effect of products of combustion is obviated and the strain on defects is]

The following paper is one of a series on mining methods and practices being published by the United States Bureau of Mines, and deals with the sinking of the Pim shaft (No. 7) of the St. Louis Smelting and Refining Works of the National Lead Co. in the southeast Missouri lead belt. The shaft was sunk in 1922 and 1923 on a tract several miles south of the company's main plant located at St. Francois, Mo., in St. Francois County. The author is indebted to W. H. Comins, local manager of the company, with whose permission this article has been written, for his helpful criticism; and to E. T. Campbell, geologist, and M. The purpose of this investigation was to optimize the high-temperature properties of columbium and tantalum. Columbium and tantalum were combined with selected alloying elements to achieve solid solution and dispersion strengthening. Fifty-six alloys were evaluated to determine their formability, hardness, strength at elevated temperatures, and oxidation resistance. The following six alloys showed high-temperature strength: [Cb-15Hf-5W-2Zr-4Al-4Ti-2N Cb-15Hf -5W-5Zr Cb-15.3Ti-4.1Zr-13.7Hf Ta-20Hf-4Al Ta-30Hf-4Al Ta-20Hf-5W-4Al] At 1,200° C, the columbium alloys had strength values of 40,000 psi or greater, and the tantalum alloys had strength values from 50,000 to 58,000 psi. For a 2-hour test period at 1,000° C, weight gains of only 9 and 8 mg/cm2, respectively, were observed on oxidation testing of two alloys, Cb-15Hf-5W-2Zr-4Al-4Ti-2N and Ta-20Hf-5W-4Al.

This report summarizes the findings of methods of treating caking coals in a fluid bed to destroy their caking properties. In batch tests it was found that several coals, including those with a free-swelling index greater than 8, could be decaed at temperatures from 400° to 425° C with a fluidizing gas composed of inert gas or steam containing 0.2 percent oxygen and a minimum residence LS,-;,' of 5 minutes. When treatment decreased the free-swelling index from about 8 to 1-1/2 or lower, the resulting treated coal was noncaking. In a continuous unit with continuous feed and discharge of coal, slightly more severe conditions were required to decake the coal. For 18- to 100-mesh coal a temperature of 430° to 440° C and an oxygen-to coal ratio of 0.4 cubic foot of oxygen per pound of coal feed was necessary. Finer mesh sizes required lower oxygen-to-coal ratios. In tests using air only as the fluidizing medium and treatment temperatures well below the softening range, the caking properties of 150- to 200-mesh coal were destroyed in 30 to 40 minutes of residence time at 200° C. Coarser sizes of 18 to 48, 48 to 100, and 100 to 150 mesh required longer residence time.

The data presented are derived from one particular strength testing device and do not necessarily represent the relative execution value of the different explosives in actual blasting. However, it is believed that the data obtained with the ballistic pendulum fire indicative of the relative propulsive or heaving force and are of value until propulsive strength can be expressed in more fundamental units.]

The logic leading to the development of the experiments in this paper already has been stated in Part I,3 but is briefly as follows: The results of the batch-grind experiments in which time of "grind" and fineness of finished product were the variables, strongly indicated (1) that batch grinding involving a single grind could not be operated under any condition to give maximum mill efficiency, (2) that the, sieve analysis of the feed charge in the mill materially affected the efficiency of the mill, and (3) that the percentage of finished product in the mill is a vital factor in ball-mill efficiency. A laboratory closed-circuit grind technic designed to simulate present closed-circuit grinding suggested itself, in which: a ball mill and a classifier constitute the grinding unit. The features of the closed-circuit grinding system are: (1) Short large diameter mills, (3) rapid flow of pulp through the mill, (3) continuous automatic removal of finished product from the system, and (4) high circulating loads. The high circulating load is a result if the short length of the Mill - that is, of the time the charge remains in the mill - and the small percentage of finished material produced during each circuit of the feed through the mill.

There are a number of methods for determining relatively small quantities of sulfur dioxide in air. However, those methods require fairly elaborate apparatus and laboratory facilities. Frequently in industrial hygiene surveys it is desirable to have a simple arrangement to obtain "on the spot" determinations. This has been accomplished for concentrations of sulfur dioxide of hygienic significance by using the midget impinger and decolorizing a starch-iodine solution.

Solvent-extraction characteristics of dodecyl phosphoric acid (DDPA) were investigated to determine its potential as a fractional or selective extract-ant for individual elements in a rare-earth-yttrium mixture. The DDPA is an effective extractant for splitting rare-earth mixtures into light and heavy subgroups. Yttrium normally extracts with the heavy rare-earth elements but may be shifted toward an extraction sequence with the light rare-earth elements by increasing the pH. Elements in the light and heavy ends of the rare-earth series can be separated from middle-group rare-earth elements by using diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) as an aqueous phase counter-extractant. Hydrogen-ion dependency of the distribution coefficients differs from that reported for similar systems at tracer-level concentration.

Objective To reduce equipment operator exposure to respirable dust in enclosed cabs by examining the effectiveness of retrofitting air pressurization and filtration systems on existing cabs. Background Many types of heavy equipment are used in mining, construction, and agriculture. Most have enclosed cabs to protect the equipment operator from excessive dust and noise exposure. When the equipment is new, controls are normally implemented into the cab to keep these exposures at acceptable levels. However, as this equipment becomes older, many components of the enclosure deteriorate, such as gaskets and seals. This causes the effectiveness of the enclosed cab to be greatly reduced. Once this occurs, the equipment operator's dust exposure can increase to hazardous levels. In surface mining operations, elevated exposures to crystalline silica have caused an excessive incidence of silicosis. Approach A cooperative research study with a mining operation and a cab filtration company was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of retrofitting an older surface drill with two controls to lower the drill operator's respirable dust exposure. These two controls were: (1) A good air filtering and pressurization system to ensure that clean air was delivered into the enclosed cab. Ideally, the incoming air filter should be 99% efficient in removing particles with an aero- dynamic diameter of 0.3 pm or greater from the airflow. (2) Sufficiently sealing the cab to develop a positive static pres- sure and ensure that dust was not leaking into the cab. This was done by plugging all holes and cracks and maintaining good gaskets and seals. To prevent wind from forcing contaminated air through holes in the cab, the cab's static pressure must be greater than the wind's velocity pressure. During the course of this research, it was found that a floor heater fan used in the drill during the winter months greatly increased the operator’s Respirable dust exposure. Problem Identification Four days of background dust levels were measured as a baseline for this research. These baseline measurements were taken in May 2000 when air temperatures ranged from 60° to 70° F. When this was completed, the two controls were implemented. The first control was to install an improved air filtering and pressurization system on the enclosed cab. This was composed of a two-stage prefilter, a blower, then the respirator-medium secondary filter. Since the secondary filter was on the positive side of the fan, all air delivered into the enclosed cab had to pass through this secondary filter. After the filtering system was installed, the cab was pressurized to a static pressure of0.01 inches of water (w.g.), which is still very minimal. The second control was to seal the cab. New door gaskets were installed, and all cracks and holes in the shell of the enclosure were plugged. This increased the cab pressurization to approximately 0.1 inches w.g.
