This paper, which is one of a group presented by the United States Bureau of Mines covering mining practice in different districts, deals in particular with the methods employed in mining the horizontal type of zinc-lead orebodies of the West Baxter area of the Tri-State zinc and lead district. These orebodies, locally termed "sheet-ground" bodies, with their relatively low working faces and low tenor of zinc and lead, require changes in the mining practice which is used in the balance of the district. In addition to the general mining methods, this paper also describes the system of hand sorting employed prior to the direct milling of the ore. The Hartley mine is situated mile west of Baxter Springs, Kans., as indicated in Figure 1. Its general outline and the location of the shafts with respect to the milling plant are shown in Figure 2.

Thermodynamics is a powerful tool for investigating rotational isomerism in substituted ethanes and related molecules. Accurate calorimetric data can be interpreted to give information, not only about the energy difference between conformations, but also about the shape of the potential barrier hindering rotation from one conformation to another. However, a deterrent to this use of thermodynamics is the labor required to calculate the contributions to the thermodynamic functions for assumed potential functions. Tables of thermo-dynamic contributions for appropriate potential functions can eliminate that labor and greatly facilitate the thermodynamic study of rotational isomerism. In this research, tables of contributions to the thermodynamic functions were compiled for two potential functions typical of some commonly encountered examples of rotational isomerism. TYPES OF POTENTIAL FUNCTIONS Potential function 1, illustrated in figure 1, A, has two equal minima higher than the third. It has the general shape of the barrier to internal rotation in n-butane, for example. The trans conformation of n-butane has the lowest energy, and the two skew or gauche conformations have equal but higher energy. Potential function2, illustrated in figure 1, B, has two equal minima lower than the third. It has the general shape of the barrier in 2-methylbutane, for example. The two C1 conformations of 2-methylbutane have equal energy much lower than the assumed Cs conformation, which has not been observed spectroscopically.

Researchers with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have developed a training module to educate both new, inexperienced miners as well as veterans on important issues related to self-rescue and escape procedures. These include: (1) physical and environmental conditions that can be encountered in a mine after a major explosion, (2) knowledge of emergency meeting locations and escape routes, (3) the importance of using self-rescuers, even in seemingly clear air, to keep the lungs isolated from contaminants, and (4) why miners should not go off to look for others who are missing. In addition, the module may stimulate miners to think about and discuss mine explosions and the devastating effects of such an event.

This digest of Brazilian mining law is based upon Decree 4265 of January 15 , 1921 , and its regulation , Decree 15,211 of December 28 , 1921. Unless otherwise stated , the references are to the latter exclusively , since it includes practically everything contained in the law itself . It should be borne in mind that these regulations do not necessarily apply to mines other than those on private and national land . Each State of the Union is free , in respect to State land , to regulate or interpret the national mining law , which is very general in its terms , as it sees fit . Whether such local regulations are anywhere in force with respect to the law of 1921 the bureau has not been informed . Article 64 of the Constitution indicates that only such portions of territory as are required for the defense of the frontiers , for fortifications , military constructions , and federal railways belong to the Union . Lessees of such lands , unless in debt to the Treasury , have preferential prospecting rights for one year ( art . 28 ) . This carries with it the right to work any mines discovered (Law , art . 12 ) .

The first phase of our work for PMSRC on this contract was devoted to a comprehensive and in-depth assessment of electromagnetic (EM) noise measurements and data taken by several contractors for use in the design of operational and emergency mine communications. Pertinent measurements and data of other selected investigators were also included in the evaluation. This assessment treated the measurements and instrumentation used, the data analysis and presentation methods, and the utility of the final results. This phase concluded with the identification of the most useful results and methods, the remaining data gaps, the contractor most qualified to fill these data gaps, and the definition (with PMSRC and this contractor - NBS, National Bureau of Standards) of a follow-on noise measurement program, instrumentation system, and data processing methods tailored to obtain the necessary but missing noise data. A partial bibliography of references related to electromagnetic and seismic noise and propagation in the frequency bands of interest was also compiled during this first phase. The body of this Part of the final report presents a summary of the findings of our EM noise assessment, together with detailed recommendations regarding the new noise measurements to be taken and the instrumentation and data processing methods to be used. This work was done during the latter part of 1971 and the early part of 1972. During subsequent phases of the contract ADL was asked to perform on-going evaluations of the continuing program of electromagnetic (EM) noise and propagation measurements made by Bureau contractors, and to utilize pertinent data from these measurements to make performance estimates for

To minimize the equipment operator?s respirable dust exposure in enclosed cabs of mobile equipment by install-ing cab filtration and pressurization systems and by keep-ing doors and windows closed. Background Enclosed cabs are used on mobile equipment to protect operators from health and safety hazards. The primary health concern is overexposure to respirable dust. Examples of such equipment in mining include drills, dozers, haul trucks, and other equipment. When equipment is new, the operator?s dust exposure is normally at acceptable levels. As the equipment ages and gaskets and seals deteriorate, the air quality inside an enclosed cab can reach a point where it is no longer at acceptable levels for the equipment operators. In an effort to improve the air quality in enclosed cabs of older mining equipment, NIOSH has been performing research to retrofit cabs with new filtration and pressurization systems. Over the past few years, this research has shown that retrofit systems can substantially improve the cab?s air quality back to safe and acceptable levels. How-ever, this is only possible when a positive cab pressure is achieved and maintained. Thus, when a cab door or window is opened, the cab pressure drops to zero and the cab filtration and pressurization system is rendered ineffective. During a recent field study, the magnitude of this impact was noted when a drill operator repeatedly opened the cab door throughout the course of the drill cycle. Upon closer examination, it was determined that the cab door was being opened to manually guide the next drill steel into place each time an additional section of steel was needed to drill deeper holes.

Leonardite , a naturally occurring , partially oxidized form of lignite with a high content of humic acids , was investigated as a binder for iron ore pellets . Although insoluble in original condition , leonardite forms watersoluble salts with good binding properties when treated with certain alkalis such as sodium hydroxide . Soluble leonardite imparts excellent dry strength to pellets , but green strength is somewhat lower than that obtainable with bentonite . However , green strength can be improved by adding a small amount of calcium hydroxide to the leonardite - concentrate mixture . Leonardite binders were used successfully on three of the four different concentrates tested .

The mineral value in the ores from the Mother Lode mining districts of California is almost entirely gold, Although many mines have produced extremely high-grade ore the usual mill grade averages approximately $7.00 gold per ton. Fully 80 per cent of the gold has been and is now being recovered by amalgamation. Various methods have been introduced to recover the gold that was not obtained by the amalgamation processes. They include vari¬ous kinds of gravity concentration which in some cases were followed by chlorination or cyanidation. The usual practice includes only stamp battery, plate-amalgamation, and vanner concentration. In the very early practice the tails were run to waste through the main drainage streams of the different mining districts. During later years very large storage dumps have been impounded. These old tails, together with those being saved from present mills, furnish the problem discussed in this article. The clean sand portion of these mill tails is amenable to the usual cyanidation. The slime portion contains the major amount of the gold lost, but it also contains 1-1/2 to 3 per cent carbon, which precludes direct cyanidation of this part of these low-grade waste tails. The black carbonaceous slime portion is the particular problem considered in this report.

The Bureau of Mines conducted preliminary beneficiation studies of a gold-bearing graphitic schist from Blue Hill, Tallapoosa County, Ala. The average analysis of the material was 0.08 oz/ton gold. Tabling of minus 35-mesh material recovered 83 to 94 percent of the gold at grades of 6.925 to 2.165 oz/ton, respectively. A combination of jigging and tabling resulted in a concentrate assaying 24.3 oz/ton gold and contained 87 percent of the total gold. Treatment of the material by jigging, tabling, and amalgamation recovered 86.5 percent of the gold.

PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in level-dependent hearing protectors and inexpensive personal acoustic monitors. RESEARCH SUMMARY: The results of previous NIOSH research show that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals and that miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and gender. Using hearing thresholds at 4,000 Hz as an indicator, coal miners experience hearing loss 2.5 to 3 times greater than would be expected for persons not exposed to occupational noise. At age 50, 90% of coal miners and 49% of metal/nonmetal miners were found to have a hearing impairment. In comparison, only 9% of a nonoccupationally exposed control group had a hearing impairment at age 50. There are numerous barriers to the prevention of hearing loss among miners. In an effort to overcome some of these obstacles, this work was initiated to evaluate practical technological advances in level-dependent hearing protectors and inexpensive personal acoustic monitors. Experiments will involve analysis of this new technology under both laboratory and field conditions. Laboratory components will consist of controlled studies using an anthropometrically correct test fixture as well as human subjects to evaluate the adequacy/effectiveness of various hearing protective devices. Electroacoustical performance testing of new noise monitors will also be conducted in a laboratory setting. Subsequent field studies will determine the actual usefulness and practicality of the personal protective/monitoring equipment as used in different mining situations. It is anticipated that increased on-the-spot awareness of hazardous noise levels and the availability of better-suited hearing protectors will provide a degree of protection beyond what is currently attained in different mining environments. Therefore, the intent of this project is to identify and adapt new acoustical technologies and products that have a direct application to individual mine workers. With increased knowledge of these technological advances, a greater demand for similar devices will likely occur, which, in turn, will lead to a better understanding and awareness of hearing loss prevention methods throughout the mining community. Cooperative efforts by the Bureau of Mines and Agapito & Associates, Inc., Grand Junction, CO, achieved the research objective of showing that data from measurements of the rate and change in rate of mine roof movement can be effective in detecting roof instability. Several instruments and techniques have been used to monitor roof movement and to detect imminent roof caves during pillar robbing. Early detection of unstable conditions can provide time either to withdraw personnel and equipment or to allocate supplemental support to prevent injury or down-time. Critical convergence rates were determined both manually and electronically. The detection of critical rate of movement has been shown to be an effective tool in ground control efforts.

Addition of sintered fly-ash/bottom-ash mixtures to rubber formulations failed to increase the skid resistance of the resulting products. Wear, tensile and hot-tear strengths, and resilience of the ash-rubber material, as determined in laboratory tests, were significantly less than that of comparable rubber. The material appeared unsatisfactory for automobile and truck tire manufacture, but might prove suitable as a filler in other rubber goods. Raw fly ash could not be satisfactorily compounded with rubber.

Objective Develop a method to warn of hazardous conditions and enhance safety during operation and inspection of vertical mine shafts and hoists. Background Mine hoisting is the most critical and potentially the most dan¬gerous operation in underground mining. Many hazards are related to falls of miners and materials, ground instability, and malfunction or lack of safety devices. All have the potential to cause a cata¬strophic accident. A condition known as "slack rope" is particularly dangerous, expecially if it occurs without the operator's awareness. The most common occurrence of slack rope is in metal or nonmetal mines that have a history of ground control problems near the "haft. Approach Studies of hoist safety features and Mine Safely a and Heath Administration (MSHA) accident statistics suggests a need to measure wire rope tension, conveyance speed and position, and shaft guide misalignment. The most accurate data are obtained directly from the conveyance. Such data could warn of potentially dangerous situations during hoisting operations, as well as during inspections, maintenance, and lowering of large equipment. Figure I shows the concept for monitoring wire rope tension, conveyance position, and guide displacement. Progress to Date A conveyance-mounted system has been developed that monitors rope tension: hoist conveyance position, speed, and load; and shaft guide misalignment. A "flex-beam" load sensor mounted just above the- conveyance protects against slack and tight rope. The measurements are transmitted 60 times a second via wireless equipment from the conveyance to the hoist room. An encoder mounted on the conveyance eliminates the need to correct the position because of rope stretch. Figure 2 shows the encoder wheel and guide displacement sensors being mounted on a cage in¬spection deck. A potentiometer monitors misalignment of the shaft guides during inspections. Information about the cage or skip can be acquired by the shaft inspector using a hand-held indicator. Inspection can also he conducted remotely from a station or hoist room using the wireless link to a laptop computer. Figure 3 shows test results from a simulated slack rope condition. Patent Status NIOSH has a patent pending on this device entitled "Cable-Load¬Sensing Device." Horizontal displacements and ground strains induced by mine subsidence are significant information needed for calculating damage and developing precautions against subsidence effects on surface structures. To devise a simple method for determining the surface horizonal displacements and strains simultaneously with the subsidence prediction, the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the significance of the tilt number, which is the proportionality constant in the relationship between the horizontal displacement and the slope of the subsidence profile. The ratio of the tilt number to the critical radius of the subsidence trough is identical to the ratio of the maximum possible horizontal displacement to the full subsidence, which is found to be constant in most European coalfields. If this ratio is known for a particular minesite in the United States, then horizontal displacement and ground strains can be readily obtained from the primary subsidence data.

In the past few years the advance of the Sunshine mine to national prominence as the chief silver-producing mine of the United States has revived interest in the area in which it is situated. Although this area lies between the great lead-Zinc-silver mines at Kellogg and those in the vicinity of Burke and Mullan it was generally presumed to be almost barren, as little ore had been found there until substantial ore bodies were developed on deep levels of the Sunshine mine. In early days it was called the "dry belt" because its ores were siliceous and contained little lead; but the classification of ores in smelting as wet or dry, although once customary, has long been obsolete The area will therefore be referred to in this paper as the silver belt of the Coeur d'Alene district because the value of its ore is due chiefly to silver, the current production of which is large, providing over 60 percent of the silver output of Idaho. Silver Belt - Its Limits and Character With a daily production of half a ten of silver or more from the Sunshine mine, the silver belt has become the scene of extensive exploration at many properties, and the outlook for its future seems promising enough to warrant the lively interest now being displayed in the area by the public.

A remarkable explosion of fire-damp caused by a discharge of lightning at the new shaft at the Sitalpur coal mine, has been reported by the Chief Inspector of Mines of India, who gave the following details: "The explosion occurred during a thunderstorm, and the evidence showed that a flash of lightning had, to all .appaarances, passed down the shaft causing disruptive disohalges at certain points between the guides and the winding rope, Tending the latter at two places situated respectively 228 feet and 278 feet frem the surface, The distance between the winding rope and the side of the shaft was 6 feet 4 inohes, indicating a spark gap;of this width, and an intensity of discharge which could not fail to ignite the explosive mixture of gas and air known to be present in the shaft."
