As part of a program designed to promote safety in industrial operations , the Bureau of Mines has been investigating the explosibility of numerous powdered products and dusts and studying means for the prevention of dust explosions . In a previous paper the results of a study of the inflammability and explosibility of metal powders were published . This report summarizes a similar study which has been made on various powders used in the plastics industry. The work was undertaken to provide information for a subcommittee of the Dust Explosion Hazards Committee of the National Fire Protection Association, which was charged with preparation of a code for the prevention of fires and dust explosions in plants producing or processing synthetic resins and molding compositions . The production of powders and generation of inflammable dusts are inherent in one or more steps of the manufacturing process of many resins and molding compositions, and control of the dust hazard is a major problem in the plastics industry . In the preparation of phenolic resin molding powders, for example , the solid synthetic resin is crushed and pulverized , and then blended with ground wood flour , cotton flock, or other fillers , as well as with coloring pigments . This raw mix is then passed through compounding mills , from which it emerges in the form of homogeneous sheeted stock, which is crushed , ground , and graded to form the molding powder . The number of major dust explosions in the plastics industry has been limited, but numerous small explosions have occurred, and in view of the ever -increasing volume of production the potential explosion hazard must be considered a very real one . Fortunately, this fact is realized by several manufacturers of plastic compounds , as well as by insurance companies , who are taking precautionary measures against possible accidents and during the past year or two have submitted numerous powder samples to the Bureau of Mines for explosibility tests .

A laboratory study wan made to determine whether drying and preheating Colorado oil shale with waste retort gases has any appreciable effect on its oil yield. Samples of crushed oil shale were heated at subretorting temperatures in a specially constructed electric furnace by gases similar in composition to waste gases from oil-shale retorts. The results of this study showed that preheating oil shale with nitrogen or a reducing mixture had no effect upon the oil or water yield. However, oxygen in the preheating gas caused a decrease of oil and an increase of water. In general, the oil yield decreased with (1) increase in oxygen content of the heating gases, (2) increase in temperature of the heating gas, (3) increase in heating time, and (4) decrease in the particle size of tho shale. The decrease in oil and the increase in water resulting from preheating were due to oxidation of the benzene-insoluble organic material (kerogen) rather than to oxidation of the benzene-soluble organic material (natural bitumen) in the shale, A small amount of oil was volatilized during preheating, which would constitute an additional loss if prober precautions were not taken to recover it. The results obtained in this laboratory study indicate that oil shale can be preheated without appreciable decrease in oil yield by proper selection of preheating conditions.

Chromium resources in the United States are estimated at 1.8 million tons of recoverable chromium contained in 22.5 million tons of chromite-bearing material. Additional resource is presumed existent in large, but as yet undetermined, quantities of material containing less than 10 percent Cr203. No domestic resources are being mined presently (1969). Excluding transportation charges to domestic consuming areas, the total 1.8 million tons of chromim is estimated to be available, in ore or concentrate, at costs up to $0.64 per pound; 63 percent of the total is available under $0.11 per pound; and 38 percent under $0.08 per pound. It is judged that transportation from the resource areas to the existing market centers would add nearly $0.05 to the cost of a pound of chromium contained in ore or concentrate. Technically effective beneficiation methods have been developed for much of the known domestic resource, and further development might reduce costs of processing these materials. However, at present, domestic chromium resources are noncompetitive with foreign sources.

"Dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine (lecithin) dispersed in physiologic saline, a model of the primary component of pulmonary surfactant, is adsorbed by respirable quartz and aluminosilicate dusts. Dust cytotoxicity as measured by erythrocyte bemolysis and pulmonary macrophage enzyme release is suppressed by this adsorption. The degree of suppression of hemolytic potential versus specific adsorption of lecithin from dispersion in saline by respirable quartz and kaolin dusts are compared with dusts' BET specific surface areas to interpret the prophylactic effect of lecithin adsorption. Dust hemolytic potential versus medium pH is presented. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and photo-acoustic spectroscopy of lecithin on quartz and of lecithin on kaolin are presented and reviewed with results of studies of the time course of removal of lecithin adsorbed on mineral surfaces by digestion by phospholipase enzyme. Results are discussed in terms of a model of prompt neutralization of respired mineral dusts by pulmonary surfactant, and a gradual re-toxification by digestive processes acting on the adsorbed prophylactic surfactant coating following phagocytosis. INTRODUCTIONQuartz dust of respirable size is well known to cause fibrotic lung disease, but numerous questions persist in the understanding of the initiation and progression of this disease. Our approach concentrates on physical and chemical aspects of mineral dusts early-on in their interactions with living organisms, and we have chosen simplified models to investigate that interaction.In the alveolar ·spaces of the lung, tissue is coated with a surface-active material (pulmonary surfactant), which, among other functions, mechanically stabilizes the lung from collapse by reducing the surface tension of water in the alveolar sacs.1 This surfactant is also the material that is first contacted by a mineral particle that is transported to an alveolus and is impacted there. This surfactant material has been studied extensively. The primary components are known to be proteins (about 11 % in dog lavage fluid), and phospholipids (about 88%).2 Pbosphatidyl cholines constitute roughly 80% of the phospholipid fraction; about 70% of the phosphatidyl choline fraction is dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL).2 Respirable aluminosilicate particles are capable of adsorbing dipalmitoyl lecithin from dispersion in physiologic saline, a model for a possible initial event occurring upon deposition of a particle in a pulmonary alveolus. As may be seen from Figure 1, the DPL molecule has several fixed charges at neutral pH; a positive charge on the trimethylamine (choline) moiety, and a negative charge on the phosphate group. Also evident are the two fatty acid residues of palmitic acid, which are bonded through ester likages to the glycerol segment of the molecule. The fatty acid moieties of phosphatidyl choline make the molecule inso1uble in aqueous solutions under normal conditions, but a colloidal unit of aggregated molecules called a micelle is usually formed spontaneously above a certain minimum concentration. Small micellar vesicles are generally formed in the laboratory by using ultrasonic agitation or by solvent evaporation methods."

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions4 issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

"Wien bituminous coal is burned in a hand-fired up-draft boiler used for heating purposes it has a decided tendency to produce smoke. A design of furnace and a method of firing and attendance that are satisfactory for fuels low in volatile matter, as anthracite or coke, are not necessarily Satisfactory for bituminous coals. It is therefore becoming common practice to use a special design of furnace for bituminous coals, in order to facilitate the combustion of the volatile matter and soot. This is done by (1) providing a larger combustion space to give more time for the combustion, (2) construction that will produce a better mixing of the gases and secondary air supplied over the fuel bed, or (3) keeping the gases at a higher temperature by preheating the secondary air, as may be done by surrounding them with refractory surfaces, or causing them to pass through a fuel bed of hot coke. A furnace may be built to use any or all of these methods of smoke prevention.In Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 303, Blizard5 and others give tests on a large heating boiler when burning coke, anthracite, and bituminous coal. Certair alternative furnace arrangements were used, but there was no material change in the furnace design for the various fuels. Since that time the manufacturer has made modifications in design to adapt it for use of bituminous coal, and additional tests have been made to determine how this change affected the production of smoke and the efficiency of the boiler."

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding sum¬mers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed.!The present report presents analytical data for 4,544 samples, represent¬ing the products of 124 companies. The samples represented in this report were obtained during December 19146, January and February 19-(. As in previous surveys, the companies covered Ly the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 2,368 samples, 319 items, and 113 brands; premium-price, 2,172 samples, 289 items, and 106 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. This project financed by the Bureau of Mines investigated the use of polymers to achieve rock bonding and reinforce coal mine structures for better or permanent ground support. Support was achieved by pumping the polymers into the rock interstices to bond the mass together for increased structural competence. Holes were drilled in the mine roof, after which the polymers were injected at about 100 psi to permeate the cracks. Initial laboratory work indicated that of all the resin systems tested, the epoxy resins could most likely be modified to be suitable for rock injection. This was confirmed when several potentially suitable resin systems underwent intensive evaluation. In a series of three field tests, two conducted in a copper mine with coal mine-type shale and the third in a coal mine, it was shown that the polymers penetrated cracks less than 0.005 inch wide. The fast-setting epoxy systems, cured out in thin films under mine conditions, produced a bond exceeding the strength of the uncracked virgin rock.

This manual covers the operation and lubrication procedures for the Eimco Pumpable Roof Bolting Machine. This machine meets U. S. Bureau of Mines Schedule 2G Approval. This manual is divided into three major parts: 1. Machine dimensions; 2. operating instructions and; 3. Lubrication. Whenever front or rear, right or left arc mentioned it is assumed that the reader is standing behind the machine looking toward the boom. The boom is at the front of the machine. Safety When leaving machine parked on an incline turn wheels into the rib or block wheels. Do not run over power cables. Make sure your power cable is up out of the way so others can't run over it. Machine has a fire suppressor system for the power unit. The remote actuator (pressure cylinder) is located at the operator's station. Components and service procedures on page 59.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a set of guidelines for determining the distribution of product-of-combustion fire sensors in underground mines. Sensor spacing is defined in terms of sensor alarm threshold, ventilation flow rate, and mine entry dimensions. Sensor spacing guidelines are presented for detection of fires from two primary combustibles, coal and wood, which are common to the majority of underground mines. The guidelines are based on data from full-scale and intermediate-scale fire tests conducted by the Bureau of Mines.

International and U.S. chromium material flow, losses, and environmental releases and transfers from mining through industrial processing, end use, and recycling are identified and quantified. Average (1983-92) U.S. consumption has been: metallurgical industry, 87 pct; chemical industry, 10 pet; and refractory industry, 3 pct. Average chromium content of aluminum, cobalt, copper, nickel, and titanium alloys and alloy, carbon, and stainless steel alloys was estimated. Anthropogenic chromium consumption was estimated for the cement and copper industries. N on-commodity cycle anthropogenic chromium mobilization resulting from U.S. fuel and fertilizer use was estimated. Commodity cycle anthropogenic world chromium loss from mining and primary consumer industry was estimated to be equivalent to about 56 pct of chromium contained in chromite ore production and represented a loss rate of 181 kt-Cr/Mt-CrOre. Chromium released to the atmosphere from natural and from anthropogenic sources were comparable in magnitude. Chromium released to soil was mostly from anthropogenic sources, and aquatic releases were all anthropogenic. Domestic product chromium losses exceed process losses by more than a factor of 10 showing the importance and potential environmental impact of post-consumer recycling. The location of historical and current domestic chromium industry processing sites in 23 States were reported. Chromium releases and transfers to the environment were estimated from 1973 through 2002 by primary consumer industry. A decrease in chromium releases and transfers to the environment was anticipated.

Methylene chloride , dichloromethane CH2C12 , a low - boiling and highly volatile organic chlorinated compound, is used extensively as a refrigerant in air conditioning installations , as an intermediate in organic synthesis , and as a solvent for cellulose acetate and other materials . As its vapors are not inflammable in air at ordinary temperatures , it can be used to advantage where it would be highly dangerous to use ordinarily inflammable solvents . The question has been raised as to its inflammable range in pure oxygen and in air enriched with oxygen . To find the answer to this question, tests were carried out with various mixtures of methylene chloride , oxygen, and nitrogen mixtures . It was found that methylene chloride has wide limits of inflammability in pure oxygen . Additional tests were then made to establish the complete range of inflammability of these gases . The methylene chloride employed in the tests was cbtained from the Eastman Kodak Co. It had a reported boiling range of 40.5 ° to 42.0 ° C. and a density of 1.322 at 20 ° C.

Analytical methods are presented in this paper for determining soluble titanium, total titanium, indicated titanium, and average effective valence in titanium chloride - sodium chloride mixtures. In addition, data are given showing the effects of coarse and fine grinding on the degree of oxidation and average effective valence of such samples. INTRODUCTION The Electrometallurgical Experiment Station at Boulder City, Nev., as part of the Bureau of Mines program to obtain more efficient utilization of our natural resources, has been developing and improving titanium extractive metallurgical methods and techniques since 1945. Numerous reports have been published describing development of the Kroll process,4/ the electrorefining technique,5/ and methods of analyzing titanium sponge.6/

A new, experimental coke oven was installed at the Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala., in 1948. This oven, designated as the Tuscaloosa oven, features a 17-inch carbonizing chamber, globar heating elements, and silica-brick heating walls designed to simulate as closely as possible carbonizing conditions in commercial, slat-type coke ovens. Zoned heat-input arrangements maintain uniform temperatures over approximately 95 percent of the total flue area. The reasons for constructing an oven of this size, the details of the design, and the operating characteristics of the oven were given in an earlier publication.2/ This report presents the results obtained from the first series of carbonizing tests on Alabama coals with the new oven. Factors leading to the development of standardized operating and testing procedures and the results of crosscheck determinations with a commercial oven producing foundry coke are included also.

As a result of a field examination made during the Bureau of Mines intensive manganese program, three lots of ore were procured from the famous old Paymaster District, 7 miles from Midway Wells, Imperial County, Calif. This district is an old producer and shipped approximately 10,000 tons of 45-percent manganese ore during World War I. A 2-ton lot of ore was taken of a Bureau engineer from the exposure of a small fissure vein in conglomerate on the Turtle Group of claims; 1 mile east of the Pacific Coast Manganese Corp. claims. The vein material consisted of manganese oxides, calcite, and quartz in fairly coarse association.

Sheet mica is an important material in the manufacture of electronic and electrical equipment. Large quantities are consumed each year as an essential component in generators, transformers, radios, television sets, radar, electric lighting equipment, and electrical appliances. The nature, structural imperfections, and impurities determine to a great degree the usefulness of sheet mica. Proper processing and classification add greatly to its market value. "INTRODUCTION This report describes the work done and presents the data obtained from limited diamond drilling at the lead-zinc deposits cf the Belle Eldridge Gold Mines, Inc., in Lawrence County, S. Dak. during the summer and fall of 1943. The work was undertaken in an effort to increase reserves and step-up production of zinc and lead so vitally important to the war program.The geology, topography and existing mine workings were mapped and studied. Subsequently, six vertical core-drill holes were put down from surface sites.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our natural resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The U. S. Bureau of Mines performed experiments to determine if the primary gas toxicities evolved during the early (~300° C) and later (~400° C) combustion stages of chlorinated polyester-reinforced mine ventilation ducts could be predicted by a smoke particle characteristic, for the development of a test parameter. The experiments were conducted in an approximately 20-L furnace, at 14-min durations at set furnace temperatures of 2500 and 1,000° C, with an airflow through the furnace of 10 L/min. The variables studied, as a function of time, were the hydrogen chloride (HCI), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (C02), and oxygen (02) concentrations, furnace temperatures, the sample mass weight loss, the average smoke particle diameter (dg and average number and concentration (no), and the product of the average smoke particle diameter and concentration (dgno). Results show that the inverse of the smoke particle diameter-concentration product [(l/dgn0)], correlates directly and significantly with the primary gas toxicities evolved during both early (HCI) and later (CO) stages of combustion.

The new international fact of life that has emerged in the 70's is that foreign energy sources can no longer be considered either reliable or low in price. As a result, the United States is turning its full attention to its domestic energy resources. The figures about proved domestic reserves are often used to reassure us about the Nation's energy future: assuming a 50 percent recovery factor, there are at least 219 billion tons of recoverable bituminous coal and lignite, of which 31 percent is available by surface methods; proved reserves of crude petroleum and natural gas liquids total 34.3 billion barrels and 6.4 billion barrels, respectively. There is also about 4 billion tons of recoverable anthracite coal, a premium low-sulfur fuel of high heating value, which is all but priced out of the market because of the high costs of producing it. Total fossil fuel resources are even larger, although there are no guarantees concerning how much might become usable, and when, and at what cost. The figures, however, are impressive. They include the equivalent of about 200 billion barrels of oil potentially recoverable from high grade oil shale; 100 billion barrels in "heavy oil" deposits; and the equivalent of 25 to 35 billion barrels of oil in domestic deposits of "tar sands," and substantial quantities of conventional oil and gas resources. There is also the prospect of a significant increase in electric power generation

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. It presents analytical data for 4,680 samples, representing the products of 130 companies. The samples were collected during December 1953 and January and February 1954. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor-Gasoline Survey reports published during the past ten years is given on page 5.
