The objective was to develop and design a remotely operated temporary roof support system that provides a safe working environment between a freshly cut coal face and the last line of permanently supported roof in which to perform roof bolting activities. This system was to take the form of a retrofit package which could be adapted to a majority of the bolters currently in service. The result is an integrated piece of hardware which will retrofit onto virtually all single boom bolters by removing the drill boom and relocating and modifying the hydraulic controls. The system is composed of three basic components: a pair of cantilevered roof supports which reach forward to the desired line of support, a mast type drill unit for drilling holes and torquing bolts, and a transverse slide assembly to carry the drill from hole to hole across the entry without relocating either the bolter or the roof support. A converted bolter not only provides a much safer operation but is projected to increase the production speed as well as reduce the manpower required to operate a section.. This improvement in productivity is shown to make the job of retrofitting a bolter cost effective in less than two months and provide a potential profit thereafter. Based on the findings presented in this report it is recommended that a proto-type be built and tested in an underground coal mine to demonstrate its effectiveness.

Bureau of Mines investigated the progressive impact that petroleum (crude oil and condensate) operations in the Gulf of Mexico have had on onshore operations and the expected effect of increasing activities in this area on future petroleum supplies from domestic sources. The data analyzed include capital expenditures, number of wells drilled, success ratio for exploratory wells, daily production per completion, annual producing rates, and oil reserves. The report compares offshore and onshore data and ascertains trends in petroleum industry operations. Observed data and trends indicate that in the near future Gulf of Mexico development and production will continue to increase relative to total U.S. petroleum activity. By 1975 annual oil and condensate production from the Gulf of Mexico is expected to be in the range of 750 million bbl to 1,150 million bbl, and account for approximately 20 to 30 pct of the estimated total domestic production.

The U.S. economy boomed in 1965, completing its fifth consecutive year of expansion. Although the advance was somewhat irregular, previous records for production, sales, employment, and income were topped. During the first few months of 1965, as the economy recovered from the depressing effects of the automobile strikes of late 1964, increases were unusually large. The gains moderated in early spring, but were stimulated at midyear by sharply rising capital outlays, excise tax cuts, in? creased Social Security payments, and accelerated Viet-Nam defense expenditures. Gross national product (GNP) in cur-rent dollars rose $49.5 billion or 7.8 percent, to a total of S681.2 billion. In constant dollars (effects of price changes eliminated), GNP increased 5.9 percent, a rate considerably higher than the historical postwar annual average growth of 3.5 per-cent. Demand increased in most final markets and was especially strong for business fixed investment and consumption expenditures. With the exception of construction, most of the increases in GNP were real, since prices increased less than 2 percent.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 256 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 17 States. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1977 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. Nineteen previous publications have presented the results of 11,317 gas analyses prior to 1977. The first three, Bulletins 486,4 576,5 and 617,6 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960. The other 16

The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of fracture filling and associated alteration on the mechanical behavior of rocks. Results are presented for specimens from the Climax and Henderson mines in Colorado and the San Manuel mine in Arizona. The rock types studied from each location are from 1) Climax, medium-grained - granite, fine-grained granite, granite porphyry, schist, and gneiss; 2. Henderson, rhyolite porphyry; 3. San Manuel, quartz monzonite and quartz monzonite porphyry. A description of the rocks was made including: color, texture, mineral composition, composition and fabric of fracture fillings, density and porosity. Unconfined and triaxial compression tests were run on the Climax and San Manuel specimens. Sonic relocities were measured during the compression tests; Shore sceleroscope hardness was measured before the compression tests. Tentative conclusions are that some relation appears to exist between compressive strength and the following properties and features for all the specimens: dynamic Young's modulus, sonic velocity, density, rock composition, and composition and fabric of fracture fillings - veinlets. There appears to be some relation between compressive strength and Shore scleroscope hardness and porosity for quartz monzonite (San Manuel). A relation appears to exist between compressive strength and texture for schist and between com¬pressive strength and extent of failure on fracture fillings for fine-grained granite, schist, and gneiss (Climax). We plan to perform additional analyses of data collected so far and data yet to be collected in the next few months, with emphasis placed on devising a practical index of alter¬ation that can be used in the field. Limitations on interpretations arise from such factors as heterogeneity of the rocks studied, the small range of confining pressures used, and other factors presented in the text.

Physical property tests were conducted on drill core from three exploratory holes on the Naval Oil Shale Reserve near Anvil Points, Colo. Data and regression analysis curves are presented. Data obtained above the Mahogany zone were used to estimate the potential zone of surface effects from under-ground mining. Single specimen testing was primarily used to obtain Mohr's envelope and subsequent rock properties. The technique is shown to provide satisfactory results for this rock type with a significant reduction of core preparation and testing time.

This report summarizes the findings of a 9-yr research program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and conducted by the Bureau of Mines, to evaluate refractory liner materials for coal gasifier reactors. Commercially available refractories were exposed to coal gasifier reactor environments, reproduced in the laboratory with a high-temperature, high-pressure test facility, followed by extensive postexposure evaluation. Thirty-six castable or gunnable refractories and cements and 24 refractory brick were evaluated. The behavior of castable refractories reinforced with stainless steel fibers was also examined. Gas environments that were evaluated included steam, H2, CO2, CO, and typical high-and low-Btu gas mixtures. Exposure pressures ranged from 100 to 1,000 psig, temperatures from 5000 to 1,1000 C, for periods from 50 h to 2,000 h. In some exposures, sodium and/or potassium hydroxide were introduced in order to simulate a high-alkali environment. It was found that intermediate-and low-alumina refractories produced from domestically available raw materials, rather than high-alumina refractories produced from imported raw materials, gave the best service as liner materials and that alkali attack was probably not a serious problem with most refractories. Based on the results of this program, good choices of refractory liner materials for gasifier reactors can be made.

This bibliography is the first report of a Bureau of Mines research project on thermoelectric materials. Interest in such research has increased because of recent success in the design of commercial products, including generators and refrigerators, using the principles of thermoelectricity. This success made possible by the discovery of semiconductors that have much higher [effincies] than the metals and alloys formerly studied. Thermoelectricity is a term that includes a large number of phenomena relating heat to electrical energy. However, the moat important applications arise from two effects discovered by Seebeck in 1822 and by Peltier in 1834. When pieces of two unlike materials are joined at their two ends to form a continuous circuit, both of these effects may be observed. If the two junctions are maintained at different temperatures, an electromotive force known as the Seebeck voltage is generated. If, on the other hand, a current is made to flow through the circuit, the junctions of the materials will be found to differ in temperature. This phenomenon is called the Peltier effect.

The primary objectives of this project are (1) the determination of manpower demand in primary lead and zinc production for the years 1985 and 2000, and (2) the estimation of the availability of the required manpower for these years. In order to meet the first of these objectives relationships between employee requirements and metal production in the various states were established, The total primary lead and zinc production from United states mines in 1985 and 2000 has been predicted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. These forecasts and the 1974 figures are as follows: [1974 1985 2000 Lead metal, tons 669,000 700,000 900,000 Zinc metal, tons 494,000 585,000 995,000] Mining By analysis of ore reserve data and industry characteristics, the authors estimated the portion of the primary production which each state would yield in the future years. As manpower requirements are determined by the tons of ore produced and by worker productivity, these figures were determined for each mining state and district by developing relationships between lead and zinc metal production, ore production, ore to recoverable metal ratios, employee productivity, and number of employees required. The number of new employees required annually to compensate for attrition and production growth is provided, also.

Before the World War the use of zirconium and its compounds was largely experimental and confined almost wholly to Germany and Austria . Occasionally small lots of zirconium ore had been produced in the United States ( 1,000 pounds in 1869 , 26 tons in 1883 , and 3,000 pounds in 1903 ) and used (with monazite ) in the manufacture of various lighting devices , especially incandescent gas mantles ; but it was not until 1906 that the discovery of the natural zirconium oxide in large quantities near Sao Paulo , Brazil , first gave promise that a zirconium industry eventually might be developed . Edward Rietz , who worked the Brazilian deposits , interested German chemists in extending the use of zirconium , and by 1911 trade journals were listing German firms as manufacturers of compounds or products derived therefrom . For a time zirconia was one of the various oxides used in the Nernst lamp . It was used also for crucibles and hearths as refractory material ; in the manufacture of chemical utensils ; in enamels ; in the place of bismuth subnitrate for defining Röntgenray pictures of the stomach ; as a pigment ; in medicine ; and in a number of other ways . The Germans were credited also with producing a remarkable zirconium steel , which , it was claimed , was much superior to other alloy steels . During the World War the United States Government investigated the possibilities of zirconium , as well as those of other steel -hardening elements , and a large automobile manufacturer actually purchased a substantial quantity of ore with the purpose of employing zirconium in automobile steels . Immediately after the armistice the Government ceased its investigations ; but despite the difficulties experienced by various investigators in reaching concordant results , interest in the use of zirconium as a steel -hardening agent , as well as in other uses of the element and its compounds , continued . In 1918 the Foote Mineral Co. , which had been interested in zirconium for several years , was exploiting the deposit in Brazil formerly worked by the Germans and was supplying zirconia in the form of ore , brick , and cement for refractory and other purposes . About the same time the Electro Metallurgical Co. , which before the entrance of the United States into the war was experimenting with zirconium alloys , supplied in tonnage quantities the demand for these alloys . In 1919 it was reported that American manufacturers , after several years of research, were producing in commercial quantities pure zirconium oxide , which was finding a place in the manufacture of small refractory articles , scorifying dishes , crucibles , tubes , and one- piece furnace linings . In 1920 the lowering of the price of zirconium metal powder ( because of improved metallurgical methods ) promised the production of the metal on a semicommercial scale . In 1924 the Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co. introduced a new opacifying agent , " Opax , " made from zircon . A year or two later some of the large pottery manufacturers became interested in the use of zirconium oxide as an opacifying agent , the increased production of titanium pigments having resulted in the production of zirconium as a by-product at a price that could compete with tin oxide . In 1928 it was reported that the industrial use of zirconium oxide was increasing steadily in the manufacture of brick , crucibles , and other refractory products , such as high- temperature cements . This Federal Bureau of Mines report presents information on the accumulation and distribution of helium in U.S. natural gas reservoirs. The investigation concerns the relationship or association of helium with geographic location, geologic age, reservoir depth, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and argon. Although helium is a minor constituent in natural gas, these data show that certain conditions make some reservoirs statistically more favorable than others for the accumulation of helium. The report is based on gas analysis information collected-by the Bureau from 1917 to 1974 from 10,086 gas samples, representing 6,455 reservoirs in 35 States. The occurrence of helium in the reservoirs was 11.5 percent with less than 0.005 percent of helium, 70.9 percent with 0.005 through 0.29 per-cent of helium, and 17.6 percent with 0.30 percent or more of helium in the gas. Results of the various correlations are presented in tables and charts. Relationships have also been determined quantitatively by measures of correlation. The statistical data can be used to determine the environment under which reservoirs with high-helium contents are most likely to occur. These data can be used with other information for predicting the future helium resources of the United States.

Changes in world mine and smelter supply sources of zinc have led to changes in zinc supply patterns in the United States during the past 3 years, 1970-72. The result has been a growing reliance on foreign sources of zinc metal to furnish an ever-increasing portion of expending domestic requirements. This review of fundamentals and historical developments is intended to provide background in order to place the future of the U.S. zinc industry fn perspective. The properties and uses of zinc are described. A new study on U.S. reserves is presented with description by geographical region and comparisons with older reserve data. The technology of the zinc industry from prospecting through refining is described with emphasis on the metallurgy involved in the various methods of smelting. Production, consumption, and imports are discussed and illustrated with graphs and tables to review the past and present patterns. Government actions affecting the industry are shown.

The Bureau of Mines has written a computer program in FORTRAN to facilitate the calculation of concentrations from X-ray intensities in electron probe microanalysis. Philibert's absorption and Castaing's secondary fluorescence corrections are used; no atomic number correction is included. Background and dead time corrections are applied to the data before calculating the relative intensities. Data from any type of electron probe microanalyzer can be used with the program.

Work on contract H0272007 is summarized for the period of 1 February 977 to 1 February 1978. The initial evaluation of two potential systems for the location of well casings, voids, and tunnels in coal are described. The pulse measurement equipment used for the evaluation of the antennas selected possible use with a pulse time domain system and an FM-CW system is described. A TEM horn antenna design potentially suitable for use with these systems is given. An operational comparative analysis between various antenna types is presented.

Although there are exceptions, oxidized silver ores containing the higher oxides of manganese are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment. When these ores are of high enough grade they can be smelted; indeed, some rather low-grade ores of this type have been smelted at a profit because of their fluxing value. In the past, when these ores could not be smelted, they either were not treated or were treated at low efficiency, generally by cyanidation. The need for thorough investigation of the problem was therefore evident for some time before the writers began their research. The problem of treating manganese-silver ores seems to have been recognized first about 35 years ago by C. W. Goodale in applying pan amalgamation at Tombstone, Ariz. He attributed the low extraction of silver to the fouling of the mercury by manganese rather than to the presence of a refractory compound of manganese and silver. Although definite knowledge as to the cause of the poor extraction of silver was lacking, a more or less effective preliminary treatment, that is, a chloridizing roast, was applied.

Shafts [are] especially important in areas such as the Coeur d'Alene district of Idaho, where every major mine is served by one or more shafts and shaft sinking is in progress at one mine or and her almost continuously.

This publication covers the work of the Division of Coal Mine Inspection, Bureau of Mines, as performed under provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act. It presents background information and data since 1952 when the Act became effective and includes up-to-date statistics for the calendar year 1962. During that year, approximately 9,704 coal mines were active in the United States, and the Bureau made 12,810 regular inspections. BACKGROUND The Federal coal-mine inspection program was established to carry out the provisions in Public Law 49, 77th Congress, (H. R. 2082) approved May 7, 1941. This act has since been amended as Title I, Advisory Powers Relating to Health and Safety Conditions in Mines, under Public Law 552, 82d Congress, approved July 16, 1952, which also included Title II, Prevention of Major Disasters in Mines. Public Law 552 is known as the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act.

The Bureau of Mines and the Alabama. Power Co. jointly conducted a first experiment in underground gasification of coal at Gorgas, Ala., during the fall and winter of 1946-47. This preliminary experiment showed that it was not difficult to maintain combustion of coal underground, and that coal in place could be completely gasified. It was noted that the high temperature developed by the gasification of coal in place brought about changes in overlying strata that appeared to be favorable to the process. The high temperatures caused the roof rock to become plastic, to expand, and to settle down on the mine floor directly behind the reacting coke face. These results were promising enough to warrant further investigation of the process. It was believed that if this action could be controlled properly with roofs of similar composition, it would tend to force the gas-making fluids underground against the coal faces. Plans for the second experiment were based in part on this favor-able roof action, and the successful operation of the planned initial straightline passages depended on this fact. Gorgas was chosen as the site for the second experiment for the following reasons: A tract of coal land of sufficient size was available and isolated from the main body of coal; the roof rock was similar in composition to that encountered in the first experiment; and the overlying strata were thick enough to eliminate some of the operating difficulties that had been encountered, In addition, power, water, and machine-shop facilities as well as an adequate supply of labor were available in this area, and the friendly cooperation of the Alabama Power Co. further recommended this site for the planned experiment.
