In undermined urban areas, new solutions to subsidence problems are being sought. The Bureau of Mines is investigating a hydraulic backfilling technique whereby fill material is pumped as a slurry through a closed system and widely distributed in inaccessible mine workings from a single borehole. A full-scale demonstration was completed in 1973 in Scranton, Pa., which is underlain by abandoned anthracite mines in several coalbeds superposed one above another. A 30-acre residential area was stabilized by injecting about 450,000 cubic yards of crushed mine refuse into two coalbeds through five injection boreholes. Nearly 200,000 cubic yards was injected through one borehole from which the material moved into the mine workings on all sides; the injected material reached a maximum lateral distance of 640 feet and filled mine openings from floor to roof. In the gravity-feed method formerly used to backfill inaccessible mine workings, quantities of fill injected per borehole averaged about 300 cubic yards. The gravity-feed method required many closely spaced injection holes and provided incomplete filling. The new method, designed for inundated mines, proved successful also in mine workings about mine-water pool level. [Utilization of small stone is recognized as one of the important problems of the lime industry. The term ?small stone' is used to designate material that is too small for calcination in tie shaft kilo. The maximum dimension A such stone rosy be placed at four inches. The introduction of any considerable quantity of stone having demensions lee: than this into the charge of a kiln impedes the draft and readers successful operation of the kiln difficult on impossible. The brittle nature of limestone makes it impossible to quarry the stone and crush, it to size suitable for the shaft kilns without producing an excess of undesirable fines. Elimination of fines by changes in quarrying or crushing practices cannot lee expected. On the contrary, the adoption of more modern methods of quarrying in recent years has increased the proportion of small material. The tendency is to blast the roan with large charges of explosives and crush it with mechanical crushers, which produces more fines than the older methods of careful blasting with small char yes and sledging the rock by hand.. We increasing use of underground mining of limestone has also increased the production of small stone, as blasting in the confined space of an underground stope shatters the rocs more completely than quarrying in the open. The use of the very friable limestones, such as the limestone of Florida for the manufacture of lime adds a new factor to the calcination of small stone. THIS PAPER gives results of an investigation of the composition and carbonizing properties of coals from the Beckley bed, Caretta No. 5 mine, Susanna, McDowell County, and Glen Rogers No. 2 mine, Glen Rogers, Wyoming County, W. Va. The investigation included BM-AGA carbonization tests at. 800° and 900° C. and various chemical and physical tests designed to evaluate agglutinating, plastic, and expanding properties of coal. Both coals were of low-volatile bituminous rank, and each was blended with 70 and 80 percent high-volatile A coal from the Pittsburgh bed, Warden mine, Allegheny County, Pa. The Beckley bed was 39 to 58 inches thick at three points in the Caretta No. 5 mine, and the coal was 39 to 49 inches thick. The carbonizing sample contained 83.0 percent fixed carbon on the dry, mineral-matter-free basis. It contained 3.1 percent moisture, 15.8 percent volatile matter, 72.4 percent fixed carbon, 0.7 percent sulfur, and 8.7 percent ash, as carbonized. The ash softened at 2,680° F. The free-swelling index was 7;i, and the agglutinating value was 7.7. This sample fused weakly in the Gieseler plastometer; its blends with 70 and 80 percent Pittsburgh coal attained maximum fluidities of 830 and 600 dial divisions per minute, respectively. The single coal yielded 83.0 percent coke at 900° C. Yields of other carbonization products per ton of coal at 900° C. were: Gas, 9,950 cubic feet; tar, 3.5 gallons; light oil, 1.36 gallons; and ammonium sulfate, 16.3 pounds. Blending with Pittsburgh coal lowered the yield of coke and raised the yields of other products significantly. Caretta coal yielded strong, blocky coke at 900° C., 89 percent of which was plus-2-inch size. Strength indexes of 900° C. coke from 30:70 blends of Caretta No. 5 and Pittsburgh and of Pocahontas No. 3 and Pittsburgh coals were, respectively: 2-inch shatter, 68 and 53; 1%-inch shatter, 90 and 85; 1-inch tumbler, 50 and 53; and %-inch tumbler, 62 and 65. The specific gravity of the 900° C. gas from Caretta No. 5 coal was 0.272, and the heating values were 491 B. t. u. per cubic foot and 2,440 B. t. u. per pound of coal. The blends yielded much richer gas. Yields of tar acids and bases (0.09 and 0.04 gallon per ton, respectively) were within the normal ranges for low-volatile coals. Caretta No. 5 coal expanded 7.5 percent in the sole-heated oven at a charge density of 55.5 pounds per cubic foot. The blends containing 70 and 80 percent Pittsburgh coal contracted 4.8 and 7.5 percent, respectively.

Many mine samples of coal are analyzed each year in the laboratories of the Bureau of Mines. The analyses are made in connection with investigations relating to fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, the causes of accidents in coal mines, the geologic relations of coal beds, and the quality and the value of the coal and lignite in the public lands. The systematic collection and analysis of such samples in connection with fuel investigations was begun in 1904 at the Government fuel-testing plant at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. and was under the direction of the United States Geological Survey for six years. Descriptions of the coal samples collected between the beginning of this work, July 1, 1904, and the transfer of the fuel-testing and mine-accident investigations to the Bureau of Mines,July 1, 1910, were compiled and published in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 22.' Descriptions and analyses of samples collected during the fiscal years 1911 to 1913 were published in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 85.2 Descriptions and analyses of samples collected during the fiscal years 1913 to 1916 were published in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 123.3 The present bulletin presents analyses and descriptions of samples collected during the fiscal years 1916 to 1919. In order that the material in this bulletin may be used to supplement that presented in Bulletins 22, 85, and ,123, the same plan of geographical classi- fication has been followed, the analyses and descriptions of the samples being grouped in alphabetical order according to the State, county, and town near which the mines or prospects sampled are situated.

"The Johnny Bull and Silver Knight claims were selected for exploratory diamond drilling after having been examined by the Bureau of Mines 3./The property was considered attractive for two reasons: (1) A prominent outcrop, recognized as an extension of the Tennessee vein, persisted over a distance of 2,000 feet across the claims; (2) its proximity to the known ore shoots in the Tennessee-Schuylkill mine, one of the largest zinc-load producers in Arizona.Actual drilling was started September 18 and was terminated December 8, 1943. Eight holes, aggregating 2,979.5 feet, were drilled with two machines. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resource to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. In the past, Westmoreland County together with Fayette County produced about one-third of the bituminous coal mined in Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh bed in Westmoreland County has furnished enormous quantities of coal to the by-product and beehive ovens, gas-manufacturing plants, and general industrial manufacturers over a wide area until about 20 years ago. Little attention was paid to the thinner beds because of the superior quality of the Pittsburgh. The approaching exhaustion of Pittsburgh coal will require accelerated-exploitation of these coals if Westmoreland County is to continue as an important source of bituminous coal, Much of the Pittsburgh coal in Westmoreland County is low-sulfur and requires no mechanical cleaning for the preparation of a metallurgical fuel. Even those areas where the sulfur percentage increased to a maximum of about 2 percent, a relatively easy washing operation usually produced a cleaned coal, which found ready acceptance by the coke industry. Davis reported the remaining recoverable reserves of the .Pittsburgh bed in Westmoreland County to be 255,439,000 tons as of January 1, 1937. Since that date, more than 100,000,000 tons of Pittsburgh coal has been extracted so that the time is not too distant when this important coal bed will be depleted. A study of the Pittsburgh bed in Westmoreland -County has not been made a part of this report as the remaining reserves of the coal can be used in coke making with a, minimum of preparation. The production from the Upper 'Freeport bed will increase as the supply of coal from the Pittsburgh bed diminishes, and as of the present time it supplies a substantial proportion of the county's coal output.

The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known (measured plus indicated) recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation; and, (3) to study the carbonizing properties of coal and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke. This is the third of a series of reports giving results of studies by counties under part (1) of the investigation. This report covers Pike County, Ky., which comprises parts of the Harold, Williamson, Matewan, Gilbert, Pikeville, Regina, Hurley, Pound, and Clintwood quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A base map for each bed in each quadrangle was made to the scale of 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, locations of drill holes, bed and total coal thicknesses, and the outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds 0 to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and over 42 inches thick. These areas of coal reserves also were divided into "measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas, areas excluded from the estimate but which may contain reserves based only on geologic inference, and areas outside of the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps. Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

The Bureau of Mines is studying cupola ironmel technology with the objectives of conserving high-quality raw materials through substitution and productivity. In the research re-ported here, a ize was modified by a gas-fired melting and/or ing chamber into the stack above the level of the coke bed, for study as a prototype for a coal-fired melting chamber. The modified cupola, in which natural gas was used to partially replace foundry coke, was evaluated in several trial runs. Data were obtained on furnace performance, metal and slag chemistry, and scrubber waters as particulates. Results of the modified ion were compared to those of conventional cupola operation. Although this research was preliminary--since the ultimate goal is to use pulverized coal instead of yielded ample evidence that the melting rate of a cupola can be icantly increased with less than a increase in energy input. Other evidence suggests that melting of low-density scrap can be enhanced and that scrap containing undesirable and/or oxidizable elements can be appreciably upgraded. This work is continuing and will include the use of pulverized coal of low rank to assist in melting.

There are many large rhodunite-bearing veins containing manganese in the Eureka-Animas Forks area of the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. The Sunnyside vein is the largest known vein in the area. As observed on the surface, the vein is mineralized over 8,000 feet and attains a maximum width of 200 feet. The average width of the vein and its branches and ramifications is 58 feet in the area that was mapped in detail. The weighted-average analysis of surface and underground samples from the northeastern extension of the Sunnyside vein is 8 percent manganese. Most other known veins in the area have a similar manganese content. The Hidden Treasure vein lies southeast of the Sunnyside-No Name-Mastadon vein. The weighted average of the analyses of surface and underground samples from this vein is 13 percent manganese. Exposures of the Scotia-Silver Chord vein are visible over a strike length of 4,000 feet on Treasure Mountain. Diamond-drill holes show that the vein contains 10 percent or more manganese to a depth of 400 feet. The vein has an average width of 28 feet. The Independence vein is exposed on the surface for a distance of 600 feet and has an average width of 6 feet. Three cut samples taken across the vein had an average content of 20.7 percent manganese. Sampling of the outcrops of eight veins in the Placer Gulch area also indicates manganese. Numerous other veins cropping out in the surrounding area are similar to the outcrop of the. Sunnyside vein system mineralogically and are worth investigating.

The Salt Flat field, formerly called the Joe Bruner field, is located northeast of the town of Luling in Caldwell County, Tex. This field, which is a fault structure, approximately parallels and is about 5 miles east of the Old Luling field. The proved area is approximately 1,280 acres, on which 332 producing wells (September, 1930) have been drilled. The majority of the wells are producing from the Edwards limestone at an average total depth of 2,700 feet. A few wells are producing from the Austin chalk or from other formations above the Edwards limestone. The Wilcox formation is exposed, and the fault trace in places is scarcely evident. The strike of the structure is approximately N. 20 to 45° The displacement of the fault is probably 200 to 500 feet. The discovery well was completed in the Austin chalk by the Lutex Oil Co. during April, 1928. In October, 1926, the Sun Oil Co. completed the discovery well in the Edwards pay. This well was an important discovery, as it indicated the potential oil possibilities of the Edwards limestone in echelon fault structures. The discovery led to the development of the third fault field in the Edwards limestone and opened up a large area for future prospecting.

Alaska contains many critical and strategic minerals that are scarce in the conterminous United States. Among these are tin, tantalum, and columbium. This Bureau of Mines report summarizes available data on the production, reserves, and occurrences of these minerals in Alaska. Alaska produces about 200,000 lb of tin per year, with historical production since 1901 estimated to have totaled 5,830,600 lb. Measured, indicated, and inferred tin reserves total over 140,000,000 Ib. Much of the tin production has been from the placer mines of the western Seward Peninsula; however, most of the reserves are in that area's lode deposits. Alaskan tin occurrences are part of a belt of tin mineralization that extends along the western coast of North and South America. The Alaskan portion of this "tin belt" comprises placer occurrences and lode occurrences of five major types: greisen, vein, skarn, pegmatite, and volcanogenic massive sulfide. Greisen and vein occurrences are the most abundant, but skarn deposits have historically been the most economically important. Columbium and tantalum have not been produced in Alaska; however, they may be recoverable as byproducts of tin, tungsten, gold, or uranium mining. Approximately 135,000 Ib of columbium oxide (Cb205) are inferred within the Tofty placer deposits in the Manley Hot Springs district.

Various test results5/ have been interpreted as indicating that cokes from certain coals shrink to a marked extent and that other cokes show very little shrinkage; but no comprehensive experimental study of the shrinkage of coke after its formation and of the factors influencing this shrinkage has come to the attention of the authors.]

"INTRODUCTION The Bynum property is about 15 miles west of Gadsden and 1 mile north of Walnut Grove, Etowah County, Ala. The ore lies in layers and as irregular masses and pockets in the clay residue from decomposed quartzite and limestone formations to the district.The property has been developed by means of numerous shallow shafts sunk to water level - about 25 foot. Operations are confined to small-scale, selective mining of pockets of high-grade ore. The ore is marketed directly, without beneficiation. The property does not yield a large amount of manganese ores. No estimates of reserve ore tonnages are available.A 206-pound sample was furnished for test. It was taken at random from a stock rile estimated to contain 130 tons of ore. The sample con¬sisted of a mixture of manganese oxides, iron oxides, and siliceous fragments in clay. The manganese occurred largely as soft, unconsolidated pyrolusite and wad. Some hard, crystalline pieces of psilomelane were distributed through the soft material. Small amounts of iron oxides were associated with the manganese oxides. Chert, quartzite, and clay comprised the gangue minerals.Dry analysis of the sample was as follows: 36.0 percent manganese, 6.1 percent iron, 2: .0 percent silica, 1.5 percent calcium carbonate, 0.36 percent phosphorus, 3.0 percent alumina, 2.2 percent barium, and 0.31 percent zinc."

The following account of wining practices of the Kirkland Late Gold twining Co., (Ltd.), at Kirkland Lake, Ontario, is one of 4 series of papers being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, sad costs in various districts. The author has prepared this paper with the help and permission of J. B. Tyrrell and W. M. Sixt, the managing director and the mine manager, respectively. This mine is operating at a daily rate of about 150 tons.

The Shamrock copper-nickel mine in Jackson County, Oreg., was formerly a part of the Chisholm mercury property. In 1948 new owners advanced the old workings 40 feet to reveal encouraging widths of copper-nickel sulfide, ore on the Shamrock claim. When the owner's funds became exhausted, the Bureau of Mines carried on the development in 1949-50, completing 1,650 feet of bulldozing trenching, 396 feet of drifting, and 3,419 feet of diamond drilling. The Bureau's trenching disclosed a separate surface deposit 600 feet south of the mine deposit. This and the previously known deposit subsequently were diamond-drilled. The underground deposit has a known length of 100 feet, a dip length of. 100 feet and a width varying from 1 to 25 feet. The surface deposit is 200 feet long, 200 feet deep, and 5 to 38 feet wide. Neither deposit has been entirely delimited by development to date.

"Present Situation:At the beginning of 1920 a general feeling of optimism was noted in many talc-producing districts. The industry seems to have recovered from the temporary depression of the first half of 1919 and many mills are running at capacity production with their entire output for 1920 contracted for. The imports of talc for 1919 were only slightly larger than in 1918 by weight and probably no more by value. Thus foreign competition has not begun to be seriously felt. Several new companies in this country have been organized, some to operate new deposits and others to continue the work done by others.An interesting phase of the present situation is the possibility of increased use of talc in paint. There is a shortage of barium sulfate used as a paint filler. Since, for some uses, talc is considered second only to BaSo4 as a filler for paint, it is possible that part of the shortage could be relieved by an increased use of talc.A series of physical tests upon all pigment materials used in the manufacture of paints is being conducted for the Paint Manufacturers Association of the United States. It is important that all types of talc be represented in these tests. Producers of finely ground talc, 200 mesh and finer, are urged to submit samples of at least two pounds each of these grades that are available to paint makers with trade name and quality data, to the Institute of Industrial Research, 19th & B Streets, N. W., Washington, D. C., where the tests are being conducted."

The investigation of major and minor coal-mine disasters has been a routine function of the Bureau of Mines since its inception in 1910, and the facts obtained during such investigations have been used as a basis for determining the precautions that the managements and employees of many mines are observing to forestall similar occurrences. The Bureau has conducted research on roof-control and other mine problems, but a comprehensive study of other fatal accidents was not attempted until February 10, 1950, when the policy of investigating all coal-mine fatalities in the United States was approved by Bureau of Mines Director James Boyd. The investigations are being conducted by Federal coal mine inspectors functioning under the provisions of the Coal Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of May, 1941, Public Law 49; and reports covering the investigations are distributed to management, the State mine-inspection agency, and representatives of the mine workers' organization have jurisdiction at the mine.
