"INTRODUCTION This paper is riot to be considered a complete survey of data on carbides; it is only an attempt to correlate the more reliable of the existing data of interest in connection with the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, and its purpose is to guide future experiment and thought.A general review of the literature on the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis will be published in the near future as a chapter by H. H. Storch for a book entitled, ""The Chemical Utilization of Coal,"" edited by H. H. Lowry. This chapter covers the literature up to l9). This publication contains analyses arid related source data for 274 natural gas samples from 20 States. Of the total samples, 269 were collected during calendar year 1985; the reminder were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received before 1986, All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

First in a projected series on the use of flexible liners for support of underground mine openings, this report presents information obtained from an extensive review of the literature on this subject. It also includes results of some preliminary test work by the Bureau of Mines. Investigations thus far indicate that flexible liners offer numerous advantages over rigid-type sup-ports, By deforming in the direction of the applied stress, the stresses are redistributed from the liner to the surrounding material. The corresponding buildup of passive resistance in the direction of diametric extension causes an equalization of stresses around the liner, thereby enabling the liner to carry loads in a more efficient manner. However, additional experimental data are needed to establish design criteria that will permit maximum utilization of the flexible liner concept in mining. Testing of small-scale models, accompanied by measurement of free-field stresses in material surrounding the model, is recommended as the most suit-able approach to the problem. The experimental procedures necessary to such an approach are outlined in detail and a statistical design for the experiments is proposed. The report also describes a device developed by the Bureau for measuring free-field soil pressures to 1,000 psi and a technique for evaluating the response of the device.

The object of this report is to present certain pertinent data on the physical and chemical properties of South Arcot lignite and to present the results of several special tests to show how the raw lignite can be upgraded to superior fuels for certain special uses. The Bureau of Mines Branch of Coal Technology laboratories at Denver have advocated the drying and carbonization of all low-rank fuels for special uses and have introduced and developed new techniques for upgrading and refining noncoking coals. Application of these techniques to the South Arcot lignites was the object of the investigation, and this report presents significant data necessary for planning a fuel program based on utilization of dried and carbonized dusts. In general, the South Arcot lignite is similar in chemical properties to the high-moisture lignites found in the United States and has some physical properties similar to Australian brown coals. The samples submitted for test had lost moisture before delivery to the laboratory, and it has been necessary to estimate the analysis of the lignite in place in the mine. Various observations made in India by qualified technicians indicate that the bed moisture content of the entire seam is in the range of 54 to 56 percent. For estimating purposes in this report, the bed moisture content has been taken as 56 percent and the ash content of the fresh coal as 2.5 percent. The contemplated use of dichloro-difluorco methane in domestic and commercial refrigerating appliances and in air-conditioning equipment for public buildings and possibly homes, brims attention to the health hazards involved in a wide potential exposure of the public to vapors of another new product, and for the first time to vapors of an organic fluorino compound. The objective in the development of this new refrigerant, however, has been the mitigation of health and explosion hazards in automatic refrigeration, and accordingly these factors have been given primary attention. Early in the development, the Bureau of Mines as requested to make a laboratory study of the toxicity and potential hazard, and it was ca the oasis of the results is of this work and the results of a preliminary investigation made in another laboratory6 that the compound has been selected for commercial use. The investigation conducted by the Bureau of Mines is still in progress, enough information has been obtained to indicate the order of the toxicity and the magnitude of the health hazards involved in the use of dichloro-difluoro methane as a refrigerant. The following is a summarized report of the work completed to date:

An extensive experimental program was carried out to determine the variability of respirable dust samplers and to determine whether area dust sampling is feasible in coal mines. For sampler variability, it was found under laboratory conditions, that a single dust measurement could be as much as 0.30 mg/M3 from the true value at the 95% confidence level. Under actual underground mining operations, this difference could be as much as 0.52 mg/M3 in the 0 -5.0 mg/M3 range. The results from dust sampling on 175 production shifts involving over 2,500 on-man and area dust samples showed that area sampling is viable, but the field investigation did not establish necessarily where the best area locations were.

"INTRODUCTION Sponge iron has been made commercially since 1912 at a Swedish ceramic plant; and the product, known as Swedish disk—type sagger sponge iron, has an excellent reputation as a superior furnace feed wherever high—grade steels are made. The general procedure for making brickyard sponge iron was described frequently in Swedish technical journals prior to 1932 and at that time consisted in filling clay refractory containers, called saggers, with a super-concentrate of Gellivare magnetite plus the necessary amount of solid reducing agent and desulfurizer and then firing in a Hoffmann ring furnace, as used in the ceramic industry.The early Swedish publications describe two types of brickyard sponge iron: (1) An inferior high-sulfur product obtained by mixing the ore and reducing agent, and (2) a high-grade low-sulfur product in the form of coherent disks 7 to 9 inches in diameter and 1 to 1-1/2 inches thick made by the saggers with alternate layers of solid-fuel reducr and of uniaxed ore."

"INTRODUCTION Early in World War II, the Bureau of Mines realized that reserves of fluorspar ore at many mines in the southern Illinois fluorspar district were not being developed as rapidly as the old ones were being depleted. At some mines the measured and indicated ore reserves were almost entirely depleted, although geologic factors favored new discoveries. The Leo mine, which had not been worked since 1938, was among this group of mining. The Bureau of Mines, together with the Illinois Geological Survey examined the property, studied the mine records and,geologic factors in 1944, and agreed that exploratory drilling was warranted Funds were,obtained for the work in the fiscal year 1945, and drilling was done; between October 27, 1944, and June 15, 1945.The property was owned in fee simple by the Hllside Fluor Spar Mines at the time exploration was begun in October 1944. Subsequently, in 1945, the Inland Steel Co. acquired of the Hillside property."

The production and processing of crude petroleum and natural gas are the dominant economic sectors of the Middle East. The 15 countries that constitute the region accounted for 28% of world crude petroleum output, 17.2% of world natural gas plant liquid production, and 5.3% of world dry natural gas production. Only Cyprus and Lebanon were not crude petroleum producers. About 66% of total world crude petroleum reserves and 31 % of total world natural gas reserves are in the Middle East. Transportation and port facilities in the region are geared to expediting efficient and rapid shipment of these materials. Export sales of these fuels provide funding for further diversification of the mineral industry. Additional development of downstream facilities for producing energy-intensive metals such as aluminum and byproducts of the fuels such as petrochemicals and fertilizers can be expected. Earnings from the industry are also channeled by several Governments in the region to mineral industry projects in Africa and elsewhere. Several countries in the region own major petroleum refineries and distribution facilities worldwide. Petroleum prices rose overall during the year owing to the invasion by Iraq of Kuwait in August 1990. Output from both countries, the fourth and fifth largest producers, respectively, in the Middle East, was negatively affected by the war. Kuwaiti crude oil wells and pipeline facilities suffered extensive war damage while exports of petroleum and petroleum refinery products by Iraq ceased owing to a U.N. embargo. The embargo also impacted Jordan, an exporter of phosphate and potash. Shipments of crude petroleum by pipeline from Iraq through Saudi Arabia and Turkey and by vessel through the Persian Gulf were terminated. However, the loss in production from Iraq and Kuwait was more than made up by accelerated output from other Middle East and world producers. Saudi Arabia, in particular, with its excess production capacity, accounted for the largest portion of the increase.

"At one time the Alaskan Eskimo lived in many small settlements scattered along the Arctic coast. These settlements extended as far south as Bristol Bay and several miles inland on the large rivers. When the white man established trading posts, schools, hospitals, and missions, these people gradually congregated around them in a few large villages. The natural fuel supply near many of the large villages along the Arctic coast became exhausted as a result of the abnormally large influx of people from small outlying settlements.The population of Barrow, Alaska, according to the 1940 census, is 363 persons, but since that time it has increased considerably, and later estimates place the present population between 400 and 500 persons. With the exception of 25 white persons, the entire population is comprised of Eskimos.The government maintains a school, hospital, radio station, and weather station at Barrow. In addition to the government, installations, there is a church, a privately owned trading post, and cooperative store owned by the Eskimos.For many years the Barrow Eskimos depended on driftwood and petroleum residue from Cape Simpson for their fuel supply. This fuel provided not only warmth for the Eskimo during the long cold winters but also heat for melting ice, the only source of 'water during .the winter. In recent years the sources of petroleum residue and driftwood have not been adequate to meet the demands for fuel During the winter of 1942-43 and again in 1943-44, Barrow experienced an acute shortage of fuel.The fuel problem at Barrow was brought to the attention of Governor Ernest E. Gruening, who was instrumental in getting a Bureau of Mines engineer4/ to investigate reported coal occurrences in the vicinity. Coal deposits along the Meade River and at Peard Bay were examined during the spring and fall of 1943. The Alaska Native Service shipped in mining equipment in September 1943 and commenced stripping an open-pit mine on the Meade River in June 1944. In conjunction with this work, an engineer5/ of the Bureau explored by churn drilling to determine the tonnage of- coal in the vicinity of the mine. In addition to this work, the Bureau of mines examined coal deposits in Peard Bay area and along the Kuk River south of Wainwright."

This report describes research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to design and in-mine test a rapid response pneumatic fire detection system for multilevel metal mines. The relative merits of pneumatic detection are discussed in the context of typical multilevel mine layouts and environments. The Bureau's prototype system is described, with emphasis on design features that counter commonly experienced and/or perceived operating problems with pneumatic detection systems. Finally, the results of a 3-year in-mine performance evaluation of the prototype system are discussed.

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unpre- cedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 400,00 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country's oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the be- ginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million bar- rels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but pro- duced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation's petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. ce World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum prod- ucts has become the order of the day every day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has been increased enough to meet domestic require- ments by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the over-all daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 50 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields - having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly or perhaps more rapidly than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each, were discovered and proved - an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year's supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the num- ber of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. This report presents the results of a 7-year Bureau of Mines program to review, revise, and make an effective engineering tool of the microseismic method of determining the stability of rock structures. The program consisted of developing new microseismic equipment and data analysis techniques and extensive field investigations to demonstrate the effectiveness and potential of the broad-band microseismic method. The guidelines for choosing the components of a microseismic system are presented along with approximate cost figures. Different microseismic systems are discussed, including completely automated systems. Procedures for conducting microseismic investigations and analyzing microseismic data are discussed in detail. Field situations which show the full value of the microseismic technique as an engineering tool are described.

A family of personal computer programs that calculate the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) has been developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The CMRR rock mass classification system provides a link between the qualitative geologists' description of coal mine roof and the quantitive mine engineers' needs for mine design roof support selection, and hazard detection. The program CMRR is a user-friendly, interactive program into which raw field data are input. A CMRR is calculated and output along with two graphic displays. The first graphic display is a plan view trap with the CMRR's displayed on a color-coded scale. The second display shows a stratigraphic section of the bolted roof interval and its resultant CMRR. In addition, a Lotus 1-2-3 worksheet, computer file BOM-CMRR.WK3, has been developed for easy storage of field data. The worksheet includes four macros that automatically calculate CMRR's, store field test data in a database format, and print a two-page report of the field data and CMRR parameters. Production of summary port; for analysis of site-specific information are readily generated using Lotus 1-2-3 software. These programs help to facilitate the engineer in utilizing the CMRR in ground control studies.

The synthetic fluormicas may be divided on the basis of silicon content into tetrasilicic, trisilicic, and disilicic. Properties of lead and barium disilicic fluormicas were determined to characterize these two representative members of the disilicic group. Properties described include unit-cell parameters from X-ray diffraction, optical data, chemical composition, density, melting point, and mechanical and dielectric properties. Both the lead and the barium micas were typically monoclinic; neither was sufficiently cleavable to yield usable mica splittings. Both yielded polycrystalline, machinable ceramics with excellent mechanical and dielectric properties.

This paper on the out-and-fill method of mining is one of a series on mining methods published by the United States Bureau of Mines. It has been compiled chiefly from recent publications of the bureau describing in detail mining methods and costs at various mines. Other sources of information were the technical press, the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the Mines Haudbook, and company reports. References other than those mentioned in Table 1, which lists the mines entering into this discussion and gives general data regarding them, are given in the body of the paper. The authors wish to acknowledge the kind assistance of many operating officials, either through correspondence or in the course of numerous visits to their mines. DEFINITION OF CUT-AND-FILL STOPING The out-and-fill method of stoping is that method in which relatively small sections or slices are taken successively from the lower surface of a block of ground by open-stoping methods, the broken ore being removed and each section filled with waste material before the next is mined. This definition excludes shrinkage stoping, even with subsequent filling; it excludes square-set and fill methods; it excludes the Mitchell slice method, which may be classed as underhand square-setting; it excludes the systematic use of stull sets and filling, which is a variation of square-setting; it excludes any method involving the caving of the ore, walls, or overburden during the process of extraction, although caving may be allowed to take place when the waste fill is withdrawn for use in other stopes; and it excludes any open-stope method without filling. Through variations, which will be discussed later, the cut-and-fill method merges into shrinkage stoping, open stoping, or square-setting. The use of casual timber support, such as props, stulls, or timber cribs for holding up weak portions of the back does not constitute a change from cut-and-fill to square-set mining.

The Smuggler is one of the mines in the Aspen district, located the central part of Pitkin County, Colo. It was first examined in July 1943 by C. R. Wilfloy, former mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, Utah, in, company with the lessees, R. D. Rohlfing of Aspen and J. W. Vanderwilt of Denver. The purpose of this examination was to sample a mineralized breccia zone that appeared continuous along the contact between the Leadville and Weber formations. These preliminary samples showed that the zone contains low but significant amounts of lead and zinc and that the minerals are partly oxidized and thus not easily concentrated. The mine was examined again in May 1946 by the senior author and William Herron, one of the present lessees of the property. This examination reviewed the previous sampling and recommended investigations by the Bureau of Mines. Sampling and drilling investigations were conducted by the Bureau from October 1946 to February 1947 and again from August 1947 to April 1948. Aspen is the center of a famous mining district that produced over $102,000,000 in silver and lead ores from 1880 to 1918, when a dispute closed down the mines (fig. 1). All of the workings below the Cowenhoven tunnel in Smuggler Mountain and the lower Durant tunnel in Aspen Mountain have been flooded since that time. The Cowenhoven portal now is caved, and Smuggler Nos. 1 and 2 tunnels are the only accessible workings in Smuggler Mountain. The only operating mine is the Midnight, situated 4 miles south of town at an altitude of 9,700 feet.

The objective of this contract was to monitor operating conditions of, four flooded, fibrous-bed filter panels used during normal underground mining operation and to analyse clogging and structural problems. After observing structural and clogging problems and conducting laboratory and field tests, a final, Flooded, fibrous-bed filter design which minimizes clogging and structural problems was recommended to the Bureau of Mines. This report also describes the dust sampling procedures used to determine the dust concentration at the flooded, fibrous-bed scrubber intake duct.

Lithium in the form of metal, salts, and alloys is particularly important because of increasing industrial uses resulting partly from wartime developments. Lithium carbonate and lithium strontium nitrate, which impart a brilliant red color to a flame, are used in pyrotechnics. Lithium chloride and fluoride are used in fluxes for welding aluminum to dissolve the oxide coating on the aluminum and prevent oxidation of the molten metal. Lithium carbonate is used in ceramics in raw alkaline glazes because of its unusual fluxing properties. The use of 9 to 12 percent lithium carbonate permits a marked increase in the amounts of alumina, calcium, and silica that may be Used and results in a more stable glaze with sufficient alkalinity to produce vivid copper blues and other typically alkaline colors. Lithium stearate is used as a grease in airplane engines because of its ability to withstand wide changes in temperature. In view of its great affinity for nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, phosphorus, carbon, and silicon, lithium has an excellent scavenging action on molten metals. It forms stable nonmetallic compounds of low specific gravity or gases that are eliminated at pouring temperatures. Lithium is generally added to the melt in the form of a lithium-calcium alloy consisting of 50 percent of each ingredient or as an alloy of 98 percent copper and 2 percent lithium. The lithium-calcium alloy added to cast iron before pouring, acts as a scavenger and increases the fluidity of the melt. This alloy also is said to increase the corrosion-resistant properties of stainless steel alloys and to improve their polishing qualities.

This report describes a program to develop, design, fabricate and subject to environmental testing three prototype collection-sensing devices of an eventual mining-machine mounted automated monitor for the measurement of the respirable fraction of coal mine dust to determine both short-term as well as average mass concentrations over typical 8-hour shifts. The design of this instrument is based on collection by filtration and mass sensing by beta-radiation attenuation. The emphasis of this development program was to evolve a rugged, stable and reliable collection-detection head compatible with the environment to which An eventual monitor will be subjected. Laboratory testing of this prototype instrument was performed over a representative range of temperature, humidity, dust concentration and composition, shock and vibration. The results of this testing program indicated that the operation of the prototype version His compatible with these environmental conditions and that further development of this configuration into a field operational device is justified.
