Bull Lake is one of several saline lakes situated a few miles north of Rawlins, Carbon County, Wyo. (figs. and 2).. The Bureau of Mines conducted preliminary investigations of sodium sulfate deposits in many of the lakes and performed detailed work on Bull Lake. This investigation consisted of drilling 11 vertical holes through salt beds using diamond core bits and Iwan-type auger bits. Bull Lake lies in a shallow, closed depression in loosely consolidated sand. The salt beds, ranging in thickness from 2.5 to 26 feet, occur above a thick bed of shale of upper Cretaceous age. The salts appear to have been deposited in the lake from surface and subsurface drainage. The source of salt is undoubtedly the enclosing sedimentary rock's exposed to the west of the basin. Sodium sulfate in the deposits probably is present as mirabilite or Glauber salt (Na2SO4-10H2O). Chief impurities in the deposits arc mud and sand. Other soluble salts present average approximately 1 percent combined. Cores from the 11 holes were analyzed in the Bureau of Mines laboratories at Salt Lake City. Drilling totaled 512 feet. Results of analyses are given in the appendix.

Mining began in Pend Oreille and Stevens Counties about 1885, Lead and zinc have been the principal products, and the area has supplied nearly all the output of these metals in the State. Fend Oreille County's output of lead and zinc from 1902 to 1956 was 110,700 and 229,600 tons, respectively. The Stevens County total was 54,100 tons of lead and 87,600 tons of zinc. Copper ore was produced mainly from the United Copper mine, Chewelah district, from 1912 to 1920; the principal gold mine was the First Thought, Orient district, which was active from 1904 to 1942. Approximately 225 mines and prospects produced; most of the ventures were on a small scale. The total value of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc produced from 1902 to 1956 was $75.2 million in Pend Oreille County and $39.4 million in Stevens County. INTRODUCTION In compiling the figures for this report, use was made of Bureau of Mines permanent records of nine production, the annual tabulations of producing mines, and the Minerals Yearbook. Requests to publish individual data, obtained from the annual production canvass, were made to the latest recorded operators of all mines in the area. Response to this request was good; therefore, it was possible to make the tables nearly complete. In a few instances the producer requested that the production data remain confidential, and in others it was not possible to reach the mine operator at his last known address. The district and county tables combine statistics for all mines, including those mines whose output could not be published separately.

Eleven major pyrometallurgical processes and operations suggested for recovering manganese from domestic resources are described. These include seven pyrometallurgical processes that usually yield a ferroalloy or a product from which ferromanganese can be produced in one operation. The remaining four involve pyrometallurgical operations whose products require either an additional two-stage process to produce ferromanganese or chemical processing to recover a high-quality manganese oxide product.

On the night of June 8, 1917, the flame of a carbide lamp accidentally set fire to the uncovered and frayed insulation of an armored power cable near the 2,400-foot level of the North Butte Mining CO.'s Granite Mountain shaft. How this, insulation accidentally became exposed is explained on page 15. The highly flammable oiled fabric set fire to the shaft timbers, and as this is a downcast shaft the fire spread with great rapidity, soon filling the mine workings with smoke and gas. At the time 410 men were working underground, 247 of whom escaped by various means, but most of the 163 remaining were probably overcome soon after the fire started, and perished. Only two men were actually burned. The cause of the disaster was purely accidental. The immediate effect was the unexpected reversal of normal conditions; the ultimate effect was great loss of life and the destruction of the main hoisting shaft, putting it temporarily out of service. The work of rescue and fire fighting continued eight days. The following pages present an attempt to draw some practical conclusions and suggestions from this disaster. The property of the North Butte Mining Co. consists of about 220 acres in the northeastern part of the Butte district, Montana. Next to the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. it is the largest producer of the district. In 1916, the year before the disaster, there were 1,160 men employed. The output was 560,947 tons of ore, which yielded 24,498,181 pounds of copper, 1,047,063 ounces of silver, 1,712 ounces of gold, and 412,953 pounds of zinc. The profit was $2,479,595. The total development work for that year was 21,694 feet. During the first half of 1917, the year of the accident, the daily tonnage of ore averaged 2,000, an increase of 400 tons over that of the year 1916.

For the past several years, Bureau of Mines petroleum engineers have arranged tours of selected waterflooding projects for the spring meetings of the Kansas-Oklahoma Waterflood Association. These tours are conducted to demonstrate unique operating methods and new field equipment and to provide additional opportunities for exchanging information. Each of these tours has been supplemented by a published report describing in detail the projects visited. This report has been prepared for distribution during the 1960 spring tour of four waterflooding projects in Greenwood County, Kans. (fig. 1). Three of the projects produce oil from the Bartlesville sand, and one produces from the Cattleman sand. The Bartlesville-sand floods have been in operation from 4 to 12 years and have produced about 3,910,000 barrels of waterflood oil from the injection of approximately 64,715,000 barrels of water, a cumulative water-injected to oil-produced ratio of 17 to 1. The Cattleman- sand flood, which has been operating for 3-1/2 years, has produced about 842,000 barrels of waterflood oil from the injection of approximately 9,305,000 barrels of water, a cumulative water-injected to oil-produced ratio of 11 to 1.

"INTRODUCTION Although the presence of sulfur causes many petroleum’s to be classified as ""low-grade"" because of the difficulties encountered in manufacturing products to meet rigid specifications, the petroleum industry is finding it necessary to use such crude oils to satisfy present needs. As the demand for petroleum products increases, and available reserves diminish, this utilization of high-sulfur crude oils will be accentuated. Programs designed to supplement the supplies of fuel available from petroleum by the manufacture of synthetic fuel from natural gas, shale oil, and coal are in progress. Such fuels, especially shale oil and, less so, oil from the hydrogenation of coal, also contain sulfur compounds which must be effectively removed. Thus, the need for fundamental research on the sulfur compounds that may be expected in petroleum and allied products is becoming greater as the industry is forced to call upon all available resources to meet the demand for petroleum products. In recognition of this need, the Bureau of Mines has inaugurated a long-range program assigned to furnish fundamental data concerning the presence, characteristics, and effects of sulfur compounds in petroleum and its products."

The Coal Mine Health and Safety Act passed by Congress in 1969, called for research to alleviate the occupational stresses and hazards of coal miners. Spurred by a series of recent mine disasters the Congress directed the Bureau of Mines to increase its attention to the welfare of miners and to develop better working conditions and personal equipment for use in the mines. As one of the early steps in carrying out the provisions of the Act, the Bureau of Mines commissioned the Behavioral Sciences Group at the National Bureau of Standards to conduct a survey of the state of the art in ergonomics (human factors) as it has been applied to mining.

"Many manganese ores contain from 0.1 to several percent cobalt. If such ores arc used for the production of ferromanganese, the cobalt is lost; on the other hand, if they are used for the production of electrolytic manganese, the cobalt can be recovered during the purification of the electrolyte.The production of cobalt in the United States is insignificant compared to the amount consumed, most of which is imported from the Belgian Congo. Cobalt-bearing manganese ores may therefore constitute an important reserve of cobalt in times of emergency. Moreover, the combined value of manganese and cobalt in some ores may be sufficient to warrant the recovery of both metals by the electrolytic manganese process, whereas the recovery of either manganese or cobalt alone might not be economically feasible.In view of the potential importance of manganese ores as a source of cobalt, a survey has boon made of the cobalt content of manganese ores. Most of the data have been obtained from analyses made in the Bureau of Mines, but valuable data have also been obtained from publications of the Geological Survey, various State publications, and other sources. Unfortunately, most published analyses of manganese ores do not include cobalt determinations; when such analyses were fairly detailed, but did not include cobalt, it was presumed that cobalt was not present in significant quantity.Information on the cobalt content of domestic manganese ores is given in table 1. Ores containing 0.1 percent or more cobalt are listed in table 2, and the districts in which such ores occur are shown in figure 1. Most of the known cobalt-bearing manganese ores occur in the southeastern part of the United States. A group of deposits in central Arizona and a few scattered deposits in other States also' contain cobalt."

Kroemer(1-3) and Kroemer et al.(4) define the isoinertial technique of strength assessment as one in which mass properties of an object are held constant, as in lifting a given weight over a predetermined distance. Several strength assessment procedures possess this characteristic. Most commonly associated with the term is a specific test developed to provide a relatively quick assessment of a subject's maximal lifting capacity using a modified weight-lifting device.(1,5) The classic psychophysical methodology of assessing maximum acceptable weights of lift is also considered an isoinertial technique under this definition.(6) While the definition provided by Kroemer(1) and Kroemer et al.(4) has been most widely accepted in the literature, some have applied the term "isoinertial" to techniques that differ somewhat from the preceding definition, such as in a description of the Isotechnologies B-200 strength testing device.(7) Rather than lifting a constant mass the B-200 applies a constant force against which the subject performs an exertion. The isoinertial tests described here apply to situations in which the mass to be moved by a musculoskeletal effort is set to a constant. Is Isoinertial Testing Psychophysical or Is Psychophysical Testing Isoinertial? As various types of strength tests have evolved over the past few decades, some unfortunate developments in terminology have arisen to describe and classify different strength assessment procedures. This is particularly evident in sorting out various tests that have been labeled "isoinertial." One example was cited earlier. Another problem that has evolved is that the term "isoinertial strength" has two connotations. The first is the conceptual definition: isoinertial strength tests include any strength test in which a constant mass is handled. In practice, however, the term is often used to denote a specific strength test in which subjects' maximal lifting capacity is determined using a machine and a constant mass is lifted.(1,5) Partially as a result of this dual connotation, the literature contains references to both "isoinertial strength test" as a psychophysical variant(8) and the psychophysical method as an "isoinertial strength test" (4,9) To lay the framework for the next two chapters, the authors will briefly discuss some operational definitions of tests of isoinertial and psychophysical strength. In stating that the isoinertial strength test is a variant of the psychophysical method, Ayoub and Mital(8) refer to the specific strength test developed by Kroemer(1) and McDaniel et al.(5) Clearly, this isoinertial protocol has many similarities to the psychophysical method: both are dynamic; weight is adjusted in both; and both measure the load a subject is willing to endure under specified circumstances. However, while both deal with lifting and adjusting loads, there are significant differences between the psychophysical (isoinertial) technique and the Kroemer-McDaniel (isoinertial) protocol in their procedures and the use of the data collected in these tests. Three filter cloth fabrics commonly used in drains for coal waste embankments were tested by the Bureau of Mines for clogging behavior and deterioration under simulated field conditions. The objective was to provide guidelines for the mining industry for the proper selection and use of filter cloths to assure safer embankments at mine waste disposal sites. The filter cloths were tested with three coal waste samples in stand-pipes used to simulate coal mine waste disposal environments. Two of the cloths showed a tendency to become clogged with fines from the wastes. One waste caused clogging by precipitating an iron-silicon compound on the test cloths. No apparent cloth deterioration resulted from exposures to the simulated coal waste environments. (The exposures ranged from 2 to 12 months.) In other tests, exposures to waters in the pH range of 2 to 12 and to reagents used in coal-preparation plants resulted in insignificant or no deterioration, as measured by tensile strength. However, long exposures to sunlight (ranging from 4.6 to 6 months) caused major deterioration in two of the cloths (86-and 98-pct losses in tensile strength) and slight deterioration in the third cloth (9-pct loss in strength).

Specific data are presented on the paraffinic, unsaturated, aromatic, and alicyclic hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, and sulfur compounds, and an assortment of fuels, fuel blends, hydraulic fluids, engine oils, and miscellaneous combustible gases and vapors.

This project focused effort on three separate areas: demonstration of a low seam longwall illumination system, design of illumination systems for low coal auger miners, and an assessment of machine lighting systems for machinery used to mine low seam coal. Results indicated illumination systems can be purchased by the mine operators of low coal seams. These systems can be supplied with the equipment as a factory integrated system or can be retrofitted to the machine or longwall equipment.

"INTRODUCTION Iron ore containing titanium was first used in blast furnaces over a century ago. It is well known that TiO2 is a slag-forming material that will increase the amount of slag produced by the usual gangue materials, silica and alumina. Increase in the volume of slag due to the presence of TiO2 and a lack of information concerning its effect on the properties of the slag have prevented the general use of titaniferous ore. Also rather com¬mon belief among furnace operators that the bottom of the furnace builds up when ores containing TiO2 are smelted has militated against the use of titaniferous ore. This building up of the hearth has been attributed to the formation of copper-colored crystals of titanium cyanonitride, which have been observed in the salamanders of blast furnaces. Until recently the availability of nontitaniferous iron ore has left little incentive to use ore containing titanium.The presence of vanadium in certain deposits of titaniferous magnetite in New York State has created new interest in problems connected with the use of titanium-bearing ore. It appears that most of the vanadium in this ore can be recovered in pig iron, which can be blown in a converter to produce a slag containing vanadium in amounts suitable for the production of ferrovanadium.The Titanium Division of the National Lead Co. recently erected a largo mill to treat ore from Sanford Hill, in Essex County, New York, about 50 miles west of Port Henry. The ore deposit was acquired from the MacIntyre Iron Co. and is often referred to as Sanford ore. It is one of the largest deposits of Iron-bearing material to be found east of the Lake Superior region and is being mined by open-pit methods."

"The kaolin deposits of Aiken County, South Carolina (fig. 1), have been worked continuously since 1852. It has been long known that the deposits contain a high percentage of alumina and that large reserves exist. These facts led to the early selection of this area for examination in the search by the Bureau of Mines for high-alumina clays. An exploratory program was started by the Bureau, and drilling was carried on from June 27, 1942, to October 31, 1942.The kaolin-bearing district occupies an area approximately 25 miles long and 11 miles wide, running northeast, with its center at Aiken, S. C. (fig. 1). Within this district, a triangular area bounded by Horse Creek, Silver Bluff Road, and Hamburg Road was roughly prospected by boring 43 machine and 12 hand holes. As a result of the data obtained, a final smaller area was chosen for more systematic prospecting. This area is bounded by Pine Log, Tewkesbury, Silver Bluff, and Craig Sawmill Roads and covers about 4,000 acres.Mineral exploration agreements covering 11,272 acres were signed by 35 property owners, and 11,956 feet was drilled in 200 holes on these properties.The Bureau of Mines exploration work in the district has indicated 19,514,000 short tons of kaolin, of which approximately 10,000,000 tons would average over 35 percent alumina.The tonnages and grades of kaolin developed by this exploration are tabulated below.All grades of this kaolin average approximately 2 percent Fe203 and 1.5 percent Ti02.This project was under the general supervision of J. R. Thoenen, supervising engineer, Non-Metals Mining Section of the Mining Division, Bureau of Mines, until July 1942. The -project was then under the general supervision of E. J. Lintner and later Rowe McCrae, consecutively district engineers for Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida. The final report was prepared, under the general supervision of V..J. Lynch, chief, Raleigh Branch, Mining Division, by William A. Beck from the original report by the author.Acknowledgment is made for the wholehearted cooperation and assistance given to the Bureau of Mines by the various operating companies in the district. This report presents results of a U.S. Bureau of Mines study of longwall gob material. The objective of this work was to determine material stiffness properties of the gob for use in numerical models of rock mass response to longwall mining, Photographs of actual mine gob were digitized to obtain approximate particle size gradations of gob material. The gradation curve was shifted down to a laboratory scale, and 20 uniaxial compression tests were conducted. Varying the maximum particle size was not found to affect the stress-strain behavior, but changing the gradation appeared to influence the stress-strain behavior. The stress-strain relationship of the simulated gob material was nonlinear, the stress-secant-modulus relationship was approximately linear, and the stress-tangent-modulus relationship was approximately a second-order polynomial function. Equations were generated from these curves, providing numerical modelers with a means to estimate gob moduli based on the stress level. In addition, the experimental data were statistically evaluated using multiple regression analyses, producing a series of equations to predict the secant and tangent moduli from the given stress level, bulking factor, rock strength, and thickness-to-width shape ratio of the particles.

This report describes the results of a measurement and analysis program to characterize wireless radio transmission in metal/non-metal mines over a wide frequency range from 0.2 - 1000 MHz and over a variety of mine environments. Six mines were chosen based on the relative economic significance of their product to the U.S. economy. Mine types include oil shale, uranium, potash, lead/zinc, copper, and silver. Particular mines were chosen so that the group would embody the most important mining techniques. The results show that transmission at medium frequencies are optimum for wireless mine communications, in agreement with extensive testing previously performed by the authors in coal mines, and that mine-wide wireless systems are feasible with a minimum requirement for new dedicated wiring. At least one need for such a wireless system was identified in each mine visited.

This paper covers briefly the particular field of dolomite and magnesium limestone; certain uses of high-calcium limestone are mentioned only to show more clearly the limita¬ tions of the magnesian rocks. Such a comparison is helpful because magnesium carbonate is essential for some uses; for others it is immaterial; and for many its presence in an appreciable amount is objectionable. Magnesium carbonate, occurring as a rock resembling limestone or dolomite, is described in United States Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6437, Magnesite. Other com¬ pounds of magnesium are described in United States Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6406, Magnesium Compounds (Other Than Magnesite). Limestone, geologically, is a rock composed essentially of calcium carbonate; commercially, however, the term may include dolomite and magnesium limestone.

This report is submitted in accordance with the provisions of the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of April 5, 1944 (30 U.S.C. 321-325, as amended), which require that: "The Secretary of the Interior shall render to Congress on or before the first day of January of each year a report on all operations under this Act." Owing to the broad scope of the content and the diversity of interests represented, the Annual Report for 1953 has been divided into two separate publications. Each has been published by the Bureau of Mines as a Report of Investigations, and the respective titles follow: R. I. 5043, Part I - Oil From Coal. R. I. 5044, Part II - Oil From Oil Shale. Identical in each report, the introduction summarizes research progress made in 1953 under the entire Synthetic Liquid Fuels program. A free copy of each of these publications may be obtained by a written request to the Bureau of Mines, Publications Distribution Section, 4800 Forbes Street, Pittsburgh 13, Pa. The R. While coal occurs beneath about 18 percent of Utah, only 4 percent of the state has minable reserves. Utah's coal fields are mostly bituminous. Current coal production in Utah is largely by underground mining, making Utah unique among the coal-producing states. Most coal seams are more than 8 feet thick. Utah's coal resources are about 6.3 billion tons, 1.3 percent of the national reserve. Most of Utah's coal resources are held by the Federal Government and Indian tribes and are mined under lease. The climate of the Utah coal region is characterized by hot, dry summers and cold, relatively moist winters. Normal precipition varies from 6 inches in the lower valleys to more than 40 inches on some high plateaus. The growing season ranges from 5 months in some valleys to less than 3 months in mountainous regions. These extreme climatic conditions make reclamation difficult. Utah gained primacy when its regulatory program was conditionally approved January 21, 1981. Full program approval was obtained March 7, 1983. The Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved June 3,1983. A Federal Lands Cooperative Agreement was signed in March 1987; Utah performs all enforcement activities and some permitting activities on federal lands.

This paper describing the milling practice of the Hecla Mining Co. is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The concentrator of the Hecla Mining Co., which utilizes combined gravity and flotation methods, is located at Gem, Shoshone County, Idaho, about 2 miles south of the Hecla mine at Burke. It has a maximum capacity of 900 tons per day and all ore treated is drawn from the company's Hecla mine. Milling ore for 1910 contained 9.7 per cent of lead, 1.2 per cent of zinc, and 4.77 ounces of silver per ton.
