During U.S. Bureau of mines mineral investigations, in 1981 and 1983, no mines, prospects, or mineral resources were identified in the Little Sand Spring Wilderness Study Area (WSA). Placer gold values in near-surface samples from alluvial fans within or near the WSA contained no more than 66 cents gold per cu yd, at $400 per troy ounce gold price. Sand and gravel and carbonate rocks occur in large quantities, but transportation costs to distant markets preclude their classification as resources. Nitrogen, lithium, clay, pumice, perlite, aragonite, and agate occurrences in the WSA are small or low-grade. The Silvia Mine, adjacent to the WSA contains gold-, silver-, copper-, and lead-bearing shear zones which strike toward the WSA. INTRODUCTION The Little Sand Spring WSA, encompassing 33,500 acres, is approximately 56 mi east of Big Pine, California, by paved and graded dirt roads (fl;. 1). Elevations range from 2,600 ft in Death Valley Wash to 5,600 ft along the California-Nevada boundary. The nearest permanent facilities are at Grapevine Ranger station and Scotty's Castle (Death Valley Ranch), about 9 and 11 mi, respectively, south in Death Valley National Monument.

The Piedmont physiographic province of east-central Alabama lies in a humid subtropical climatic zone. Such an area with mature land forms underlain by rocks rich in feldspars provides conditions condusive to development of gibbsite, a major source of alumina; a raw material for which the United States relies on foreign suppliers for 85 percent of its needs. Gibbsite occurs in the northern and inner sections of the Piedmont Province of Alabama in Coosa, Clay, Randolph, Chambers, Elmore, Tallapoosa and Lee Counties in soils and saprolite derived from amphibolites, granites, feldspathic hornblende gneiss and other gneissic rocks. The major occurrences of gibbsite are in areas underlain by hornblende gneiss in Chambers and Randolph Counties. This region provides the proper physiographic and mineralogical setting for large areas containing up to 25 percent of saprolitic gibbsite. These areas provide potential sources of alumina that could be used to meet the United States future needs. Narrow zones and pockets rich in gibbsite also occur in soil and saprolite derived from areally restricted feldspar rich zones of narrow linear amphibolites in the inner Piedmont and feldspathic zones in various granites distributed throughout the Piedmont.

Although faced with a slowdown in the world economy, continued inflation, and rising costs, the mining industry exceeded its 1974 raw mineral production value of $55.1 billion by 13%. The increase was due to value increases in the production of fuels and nonmetals; metals reported a decrease in value. Of 23 metals produced, 14 showed value increases; of 44 non-metals produced, 26 reported value in-creases. Because of increasing costs and depletion of high-grade reserves, the mining industry continued to rely on new technologies to maintain its profit margins. In the surface mining sector, the development of new tools and equipment played a large part in increasing production and maintaining this goal. Some of the types of equipment developed were instrumentation for control of pit slope stability, shovel power transmissions, electric wheel trucks, and single-flight conveyor systems.

The uranium mine environment is characterized by airborne radon-222 and its daughter products to which miners are exposed through breathing and by gamma and X rays from the uranium-235 and uranium 238 chains to which the miners are exposed externally. The nature of the radon-daughter concentrations and the methods used to define and measure the exposures are explained through an extensive review of the literature. An improved passive track-etch dosimeter for personal use is proposed which has a measurement range of about 30-400 WLH with a 95% confidence interval to ~25% for individual detector measurements in relatively stable mine air. Some measurements of these dosimeters adapted to environmental use are also presented. A program of development for enhancement of dosimeter sensitivity and greater accuracy of measurement is outlined. Extensive gamma-ray survey measurements were made in two Colorado and three New Mexico mines. Follow-up personal miner dosimetry with LiF TLDs was done at the mine with the highest exposure rates, The average miner exposure rate measured was 4.27 mR per day, or 9.3 of the maximum permissible level averaged over 13 weeks. Comparisons are made with previous mine surveys and their value in estimating miner exposure is discussed. Some depth-dose measurements made using Lucite as the absorber are evaluated.

As part of the Bureau of Mines effort to establish a comprehensive subsidence data base for subsidence technology development, subsidence and related data are being compiled for various mining, geological, and environmental situations. This publication presents data for a longwall mining operation in the Northern Appalachian Coal Region. Vertical displacements and relative faze positions are tabulated for 160 subsidence monuments. Measurements were taken 32 times during the 2 years it took to mine the two panels. Brief physiographic and geological descriptions of the mining site are presented along with a general account of the mining and subsidence monitoring methods.

The behavioral accident simulator (BAS) is a computer program that can be used to simulate accident situations. It demonstrates how the potential to have an accident grows or diminishes as a result of changes in various environmental, organizational, and behavioral factors. It calculates the number of fatalities that may result from various conditions and graphically displays these data. The BAS is useful for studying systems of accident causes, for demonstrating the various ways to diminish fatalities, and for training employees. This Bureau of Mines report provides the detailed instructions needed to use the BAS.

In a previous study, the e?cacy of commercial and prototype impactors for sampling diesel particulate matter (DPM) in coal mines was investigated. Laboratory and ?eld samples were collected on quartz-?ber ?lters and analyzed for organic and elemental carbon. Coal dust contributed a minimal amount of elemental carbon when commercial cascade impactors and prototype impactors, designed by the University of Minnesota (UMN) and the US Bureau of Mines (BOM), were used to collect submicrometer dust fractions. Other impactors were not as e?ective at excluding coal dust. The impactors evaluated in that study were either not commercially available or were multi-stage, expensive, and di?cult to use for personal measurements. A commercial version of the BOM impactor, called the DPM Cassette, was recently introduced by SKCs. Tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of the DPM Cassette for measuring diesel-source elemental carbon in the presence of coal dust. Bituminous coals from three mines in two di?erent coal provinces were examined. The dust particle diameters were small and the coal dust contained a high percentage of carbon, there by giving a worst-case condition for non-anthracite coal mines. Results for the DPM Cassette were essentially identical to those obtained by the BOM impactors in a previous study. At a respirable coal dust concentration of 5.46mg m3, which is 3.8 times the regulatory limit, the DPM Cassette collected only 34µg m3 of coal-source elemental carbon.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the Elk Creek RARE II area during the summer of 1981. The study area encompasses 18,900 acres [29.5 sq mi (7,680 ha)] along Elk Creek, 18 mi (30 km) southeast of Covello, California. No mineral resources were identified by the U.S. Bureau of Mines during this survey. Assay results of samples taken in this area indicate only trace amounts of manganese and chromium. No radioactive or fluorescent minerals were detected. No oil and gas, coal, or geothermal leases have been recorded for the study area.

In 1986 at the request of Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 23,225 acres of the 27,980-acre Jordan Craters Wilderness Study Area (OR-003-128) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Malheur County, OR, about 20 miles northwest from Jordan Valley. No mining activity has been recorded within the study area, and no metallic or industrial mineral resources were identified. Small isolated occurrences of decorative quality stone were identified. However, none of these occurrences constitute a resource. Although the study area is underlain by relatively young volcanic rocks, the area has no known geothermal energy resource.

The European Union (EU) completed a new directive 2002/44/EC1 called the Physical Agents Directive (PAD) that establishes action and limit values for hand-arm and whole body vibrations. The directive specifies that: “…workers shall not be exposed above the exposure ‘limit value’.” 1 and “…once the exposure action values … are exceeded, the employer shall establish and implement a programme of technical and/or organisational measures intended to reduce to a minimum exposure to mechanical vibration and the attendant risks…” 1 The PAD limit value is effective for new machines starting July 6, 2007 and for used machines by at least July 6, 2010. These requirements apply to the users of machines, but machine manufacturers will be challenged to provide machines and information to help the users comply with the directive. Caterpillar manufactures machines with the goal of enabling our customers to comply with all regulations dealing with health and safety. Caterpillar designs all of our machines to provide a safe, comfortable and productive work environment. This study was to determine if seat suspensions could provide a reduction in the vibration environment experienced by operators of Caterpillar mid sized (<50,000KG) Track Type Tractors Methods Seat manufacturers were asked to provide seat suspensions that provide improved isolation over and above current seat suspension. Each supplier was provided with ride profiles and was asked to demonstrate the vibration reduction on a shaker table. Two suppliers provided suspensions that were compared with the current seat suspension in a field study. Three full factorial experiments were conducted. The first experiment was to evaluate overall suspension performance for four operations. The second experiment was to determine the benefit of the adjustable vertical damper at three different levels and the third experiment was to determine the effect of the fore/aft and side/side isolators. Six operators were used for the study. Acceleration was measured at the seat base and at the operator seat pad. Both the transfer function and the ISO 2631 RMS ride values were used to determine the seat suspension’s effectiveness of isolating the operator from vibration. A structured questionnaire was used to determine the operators’ subjective assessment of the seat suspensions. Results There was significant operator-to-operator variability in the vertical direction (>35%), however there was little variability in the fore/aft and side/side direction based on seat base

Three-dimensional structural analyses of three instrumented areas of a deep, longwall coal mine have been performed using the finite element code BMINES. The three Instrumented areas include two single-entry portions and one double-entry portion of the Sunnyside No. 1 Mine, Sunnyside, Utah. The finite element models simulated the sequence of excavation in each test area: the advance of the entry, installation of structural supports, retreat of the longwall, caving behind the longwall, and accumulation and loading of the gob. The structural supports considered in these finite element models include rock bolts, wood cribs, concrete cribs, steel arch sets, and chocks. Mechanical simulation of the geologic environment is achieved through elastic/ perfectly plastic material models employing anisotropy to represent finely layered regions of the medium. The results of these calculations are com-pared with the instrumentation readings from the mine. These measurements include closures, crib loads, rock-bolt forces, and stress growth.

This report describes a 4-inch diameter borehole probe which contains a low light level TV camera, magnetic compass, light illumination source, bottom/water detector sensor and a pointing angle sensor. The camera viewing angle is at a right angle to the probe&apos;s body. All data from the sensor is multiplexed into the closed circuit camera video for transmission on a single 50 ohm coaxial cable to a surface control unit. Likewise control of the probe&apos;s power, zoom lens, focus, panning and aperture is accomplished via a down-link multiplexed on the same cable.

The Sugarloaf RARE II area (No. 5296) covers 11,100 acres in the northern part of the White Mountain Range, in the Inyo fictional Forrest. It is in Nevada, about 45 mi north of Bishop, California. A mineral survey was conducted by On U.S. burro of Mines in 1982 and by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1980-1982. The Bureau reviewed pertinent literature, searched Esmeralda and Mineral County mining records, obtained current claim information from the administrative agencies, and contacted claim owners. Thirty-six properties were examined, and 674 samples were taken from them to help assess win oral resources and potential. The Geological Survey evaluated the regional mineral potential by geologic, geochemical, and Geophysical surveys.

Measurements and analyses were conducted of whole-body vibration aboard seven commercially available passenger and/or recreational vehicles: sedan; sport-utility vehicle (SUV); pickup truck; moving truck; motorcycle; all-terrain vehicle (ATV); and boat. The purpose of the testing was to measure and assess whole-body vibration exposure in a range of typical vehicle environments in order to gain understanding of typical exposure levels characteristic of activities of daily living. Vehicle models tested (and model year) were: Ford Taurus (1995); Jeep Cherokee Sport (2000); Toyota Tundra SR5 (2002); Ford F-350 (1997); Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Classic (2004); Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x4; and Steiger Craft Model 21 Montauk. All vehicles were tested with their standard factory-installed seats and were operated under a range of normal operating conditions and speeds typical of intended vehicle use. Methods The measurement, processing, analysis, and exposure assessment methods follow the guidance of generally accepted, national and international consensus standards relevant to the evaluation of whole-body vibration, including ISO 2631-1 [1] and ANSI S3.18 [2]. Seats were instrumented with low-mass triaxial accelerometers mounted in seat pads. Accelerometers used in the test are specified to have flat frequency response over the frequency range of 0.5 to 80 Hz, and all accelerometers were recently calibrated traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Seat pads were installed following guidance in the relevant standards [1, 2], with sensitive axes of the accelerometers following the standard coordinate system with respect to the seated occupant. (The x-axis represents fore-aft motion; the y-axis represents side-to-side motion; and the z-axis represents vertical motion with respect to the occupant.) Vibration data processing and analysis, including filtering, sampling, frequency-weighting, averaging, summation, and determination of basic and additional metrics followed procedures in the relevant standards [1, 2]. Digitized time series data were acquired and stored using a PC-based data acquisition system. Whole-body vibration exposure analyses were conducted via post-processing. During data processing, recorded periods of seat acceleration that were identified and verified as resulting from occupant-induced motion rather than vehicle motion were excluded prior to exposure analysis. "There is an old saying that ""It is too late to lock the stable after the horse is stolen"". Is not this just what is being done by many mine operators today when it comes to buying safe electrical equipment for gaseous and dusty coal mines?The ""open type"" of electrical equipment or even the ""half safe"" type represents the unlocked stable. After the mine disaster, and after men have lost their lives, the lock is put on - that is, safer equipment is installed.For example, an open type of electric coal drill was used in a gaseous mine in West Virginia, This was the probable cause of the death of 27 men. A half safe type of electric coal-cutting machine was used in a gaseous mine in Pennsylvania. This was likely the cause of the death of 36 men. An unapproved, unsafe type of flame safety lamp was used in a gaseous and dusty mine in Utah. This was the all¬eged cause of the death of 171 men. All three disasters happened within the last six months, and seem to have been avoidable if proper equipment had been used.It is understood that more rigid requirements will be enforced in West Virginia. The committee of State mine inspectors made definite recommendation for im¬proving the conditions in the given mine in Pennsylvania. The Industrial Commission of Utah have already issued new orders which will remedy the use of unsafe lamps in that State.These acts and recommendation are all good and will help prevent accidents in those States in the future. Is it not a pity that such recommendations and order were not made a little earlier before the tell of life had been exacted? Is it not a pity that other States will not take these lessons to heart and safeguard their mines before and not after disasters take place?Electric current can cause accidents in five general ways as follows: (1) By shock to persons; (2) by igniting powder; (3) by igniting gas; (4) by igniting coal dust; and (5) by setting fire to inflammable material such as timber and coal. A great many accidents from these causes are preventable if proper care is taken. Most of the accidents caused by sparks and flashes from electrical apparatus would not take place if approved electrical equipment was used. By approved equipment, the writer means equipment that has been tested and formally approved by the Bureau of Mines. So far as known, up to the present time, no disasters have been caused by sparks or flashes from equipment having the Bureau's approval."

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 352 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 18 States and 5 foreign countries. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1974 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economics. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. In 1985 at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, personnel from the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined a 27,680-acre portion of the 30,420-acre King Hill Creek Wilderness Study Area (10-19-2) in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The study area, in southwestern Idaho, is underlain by Tertiary tuffs and basalt. There are no known mining claims or prospects in the study area, and no mineral resources were identified. The Volcano mining district is immediately north, but mines there are in granitic rock which does not crop out in the study area. Oil and gas leases were offered for land in the southern part of the area, but no applications were filed, and the lease offering was withdrawn (1985). INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and potential of the King Hill Creek study area at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of the investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the study area for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data for the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.

Wyoming contains many petroleum and natural-gas fields, and more than 250 geological structures have been mapped; however, only about 85 have been found (July 1938) to contain petroleum or natural gas, or both, in commercial quantities. To January 1938 approximately 434 million barrels of oil and 915 billion cubic feet of gas have been produced, and it was estimated that proved oil reserves in Wyoming amounted to 300 million barrels.&apos; The Salt Creek field, the largest in the Rocky Mountain area, alone has produced 64 percent of the State&apos;s oil and 46 percent of its gas. This field ranked thirteenth among the producing fields of the United States in total cumulative production as of January 1, 1938. On this basis it ranks with the Kern River and Huntington Beach fields of California and the Butler County fields of Kansas. The Salt Creek field has declined in relative importance; in 1937, while still the largest oil-producing field in the State, it produced 31 percent of the oil and 11 percent of the gas extracted from all wells in Wyoming.

This three volume final report summarizes the activities and conclusions of this contract. The objective of the contract was to develop noise control modifications on a retrofit basis, for auger miner coal-cutting systems. Manuals were prepared to assist mine shop personnel in retrofitting the auger miner with these noise controls. Final Report Volume I - Details all vibration and acoustical tests conducted in development of the noise controls. Final Report Volume II - Noise Control Modification Manual for the Jeffrey 100-L Auger Miner describes the various noise control modifications to the auger miner, along with fabrication procedures, cost and vendor information. Final Report Volume III - Noise Control Modification Manual for the Jeffrey 94-L Bridge Conveyor describes the various noise control modifications to the bridge conveyor, along with fabrication procedures, cost and vendor information.

An investigation of the possibility of improving the grinding characteristics of a gabbro ore containing copper and nickel sulfides via a thermal shock treatment technique has been carried out. The results obtained indicate that the breakage characteristics of the gabbro are particles can be significantly improved by preheating the are particles to a temperature around 400°C followed by rapid water quenching. For a given power input and feed size, the thermally treated material produces a product of much finer distribution than the untreated material. An assessment of the improvement in grindability has been made by calculating feed size selection functions for untreated and heat-treated materials.
