British Coal's mining research programme is directed towards the strategic objectives of reducing production costs, improving product quality and resolving health, safety and environmental issues. The strategy for R&D is described and selected parts of the programme are reviewed. Two major initiatives are directed towards reducing production costs: geotechnics and automation. Integrated exploration techniques are used to delineate geological structures as an aid to mine planning. Rockbolting is being rapidly introduced and the in situ stress field has been found to be of significant influence. Automation is the subject of a major programme. A strategy for coal quality has been devised. The health, safety and environmental programme concentrates on the traditional hazards together with surface environmental problems.

Procedures are described for the application of risk analysis or probabilistic methods to mining geomechanics. The methods are widely applicable to existing mine design models. Detailed examples are given of plane slope failure and of pillar design based on displacement-discontinuity stress modelling and empirical strength assessment. The modelling techniques assessed are the Latin hypercube sampling method, incorporated in a spreadsheet environment, and the general point estimate method (GPEM), programmed in TurboBasic. An example GPEM program listing is included. Both methods are very convenient to use. Probabilistic acceptance criteria for slope stability after Priest and Brown are examined and alternatives are proposed where output distributions of factor of safety are approximately normal or lognormal and output distributions of safety margin are normal. The reliability index is included as a useful measure of variability with proposed acceptance criteria.

The compositions of olivine, pyroxene and chromite from the Proterozoic ultramafic complex are analagous to those of cumulate ultramafic rocks of tholeiitic origin, suggesting that the parent magma may have been tholeiitic rather than komatiitic. The complex contains economically significant Ni-Cu sulphide mineralisation. The high sulphide/silicate ratio is best explained in terms of the segregation of sulphides from a large volume of magma, of which all but the ultramafic cumulate fraction has since been eroded. Platinum-group minerals that have been identified include sperrylite, moncheite, native platinum, froodite, merenskyite, michenerite and Pd-rich pentlandite lamellae exsolved from pyrrhotite. They are characteristically found in close association with chalcopyrite, either along the contacts between hydrosilicate and sulphide grains or in cracks within pentlandite and chalcopyrite, which may also be intergrown with galena. Crystallisation from a Cu-rich residual magmatic liquid also enriched in Pt, Pd, As, Sb, Bi, Te, Zn and Pb is postulated.

The two best known graphical methods for presenting and comparing comminution data are obtained by linearising the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann and the Rosin-Rammler size distribution equations. It is shown that the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann equation can cause excessive congestion in the 50 per cent oversize range and that, overall, the Rosin-Rammler is a better procedure. Examples are given

The object of the paper is to describe the standards of quality that should be specified in ordering material ordinarily required for colliery use, and also the qualities most suitable for particular purposes. Tables are presented of British Standard tests for wrought iron grades A, B and C, Admiralty tests for iron in chain, the quality of material for wheels and axles, and the composition and mechanical properties of wrought iron, Armco (ingot) iron and drawbar-gear steel. Stream-sediment sampling undertaken to define the regional geochemistry of northern Scotland is described with particular reference to the errors involved. The region is underlain essentially by Moine schists, Caledonian granites and Old Red Sandstone sediments, which are generally characterized by low geochemical relief. Factors in the secondary environment obscure the relationship between trace-metal concentrations in stream sediments and bedrock geology. Investigation of sampling and sample preparation methods indicates that the -100-mesh material is the optimum size fraction for the regional survey of this area: it provides adequate geochemical contrast: it reduced the incidence of spurious high values in the samples investigated and it is available in amounts which are adequate for all the analyses required. Grinding samples improves precision and reduces the preferential volatilisation of metals coprecipitated with hydrous manganese and iron oxides for the optical emission spectroscopic method used initially. A study of the dispersion of metals in the drainage system of an area of Pb-Ba-Mo mineralisation and an area of U-Pb mineralisation, respectively, indicates that a sampling interval of 1 per 2 km2 based on second- or third-order streams is adequate to define anomalous metal concentrations. Regional variation can also be represented on the same interval. Modifications to the sampling procedure to reduce the effects of the secondary environment are complicated by the primary association of Mn and Fe with mineralisation in the area. The ratio of analytical and sampling error to regional variance shows that procedural precision is adequate to prepare regional geochemical maps of northern Scotland, with the exception of Cr, Cu at low concentrations and Pb.

Mineral exploration carried out in Ireland since the mid-1950s has resulted in the discovery of ore deposits that are now in production atTynagh (Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag), Silvermines (Zn-Pb) and nearby Ballynoe (barite), and Gortdrum (Cu-Ag-Hg); a major Zn-Pb deposit at Navan that is now being drilled prior to development; potentially productive deposits at Keel (Zn-Cd-Pb), Ballinalack (Zn-Pb) and Aherlow (Cu-Ag); and a number of interesting prospects, including one of spodumene. Underground exploration of a formerly extensively mined copper deposit at Allihies has outlined new, albeit currently uneconomic, reserves at depth. The copper and pyrite deposits at Avoca have in recent years been re-explored and are now again being worked. Most Irish ore deposits are in the lower half of the Lower Carboniferous succession of limestones and subordinate shales and sandstones, and this stratigraphic zone is being most intensively explored at present. Other geological units under active exploration are Ordovician sediments-volcanics belts, Caledonian granites, and parts of the Old Red Sandstone and Dalradian series. Surface prospecting is made difficult in many places by glacial and other superficial deposits, including peat and alluvium. Geochemical prospecting methods have been outstandingly successful and primarily responsible for most new discoveries. Boulder hunting and outcrop prospecting have proved effective in detailed investigations of geochemically anomalous areas. Some parts of the country have been covered by three separate airborne geophysical surveys, albeit without success so far. The induced polarisation technique, the most widely used ground geophysical method, has contributed to several discoveries. The scope of application of electromagnetic surveys is more restricted than that of induced polarisation, but the method has been effective in a few cases and has contributed to the Tynagh discovery. To date, the resistivity and self-potential methods have found little application. Magnetic surveys are not applicable directly in the search for ore deposits of the various known types, but can be helpful in outlining geological structures in some areas. The gravity method has been used successfully in a survey over the Zn—Pb deposit at Navan ; it has also proved effective in trials over a blind sulphide deposit at Tynagh that cannot be detected with geoelectrical methods. However, the increased use of diesel equipment has exacerbated the pollutant load (including heat, humidity, exhaust gases and particulates) placed upon the environmental systems of many underground operations. A new range of wear-resistant materials is being produced by technology that has been used to develop high performance metal-matrix composites. These include steels and aluminium alloys that can be made as sheet, plate, rod or bar. The incorporation of hard, wear-resistant particles in an alloy matrix is achieved by reactive casting, spray deposition and powder metallurgical techniques. For example, large particles of TiC can be homogeneously distributed in steel during casting and the subsequent product can easily be rolled to plate. Similarly, up to 20% alumina particles and SiC can be injected, respectively, into steel and wear-resistant aluminium alloys by spray deposition. The current state of development of the process is reviewed and indications are given of the projected applications of such materials.

Vapour pressures of sulphur have been measured over the temperature range 340-1039°C by means of boiling-point measurements, an internally heated pressure vessel being employed with argon as the pressure medium. The results are expressed satisfactorily by a four-term pressure-temperature relation. At the cited critical temperature of 1040°C the calculated critical pressure is 204 atm. From the pressure-temperature relation and available thermal data for the vapour, the approximate composition of the saturated vapour in terms of the various molecular species has been derived for the critical point

This paper describes the incipient heatings that occurred below ground in the High Main and Main seams at the mine between the years 1963 and 1966. The possible causes, effects and activities associated with such heatings are discussed in an attempt to establish the precautions necessary to minimize such occurrences. The assessment of as many "norms" as possible is made to enable the earliest detection and level of activity to be determined.

The options for designing slopes in complex geological conditions are reviewed. It is shown that modelling, especially numerical modelling, allows a degree of analysis that cannot otherwise be achieved. Examples are presented of how numerical modelling can be used to investigate fundamental aspects of rock mass behaviour. It is demonstrated that an important consequence of change in scale is that the mechanisms of failure also change. The complex failure of the footwall slope at Aznalcollar, a large open-pit mine in southern Spain, is discussed. Numerical modelling with UDEC (universal distinct-element code) has allowed the realistic simulation of displacements measured in the field

The present state of knowledge on this subject may briefly be summarized as follows: (1) The copper content of the slag increases with the grade of the matte in contact with it; on the other hand, the proportion of copper lost decreases as the matte grade increases, because as a general rule a smaller volume of slag is produced when a high-grade matte is made. (2) The presence of CaO and MgO in the slag decreases the copper content of the slag, and the presence of ZnO increases it; the presence of A1203 seems to have little effect. The influence of the silicate degree is not yet clarified, but on theoretical grounds it seems likely that the copper content increases with the silicate degree of the slag. (3) High slag viscosity, high magnetite contents and low density difference between matte and slag all tend to increase the copper loss. The volume of slag is also an important factor. (4) The effect of bath temperature on the copper loss is not clear and further investigation of this point is needed. (5) It appears possible to recover a large part of the copper in the slag by adding FeS, CaS and other sulphides

Whilst spontaneous combustion has never been considered a major problem in south Durham, certain collieries in the area have a history of heatings and precautions are essential. Three collieries are affected - Shotton, Vane Tempest and Seaham - and in the case of the last two, there are huge areas of high quality coal to work under conditions where spontaneous combustion is a real hazard. The seam being extracted has an immediate roof in goaf left by the incomplete extraction of a contiguous seam worked before the turn of the century. The presence of residual coal stocks and old roadways and cavities adds to the difficulty of preventing unwanted air movement. The main preventive measures adopted are the construction of airtight gateside packs and the use of sprayed surface coatings in the gate. Sampling systems and sampling points are described and, in particular the field of continuous monitoring from the surface is examined. The resulting possibility of a quantitative as well as qualitative assessment of the preventative measures required is discussed.

An algorithm is proposed for updating the probability of slope failure on the basis of sequential testing using Bayesian probability theory. The approach is novel and computationally straightforward since, unlike other methods, updating of the probability of failure is carried out directly. This is because the probability is treated as a random variable whereas other methods have considered it as a purely deterministic value or as a function of shear strength parameters that are updated individually. The prior information required for the Bayesian analysis is obtained by a conventional probabilistic analysis. An exponential distribution is then used for the probability of failure, applying the principle of maximum entropy. This distribution is continually updated for individual slope cells, where repetitive excavation creates several such cells and a corresponding series of Bayesian estimates of the probability of failure is obtained. The approach is applicable to most simulations but there are limitations on its use. A more mathematically rigorous refinement using the beta distribution is currently under development
