Kumistinskoye gold- and silver bearing ores (Republic of Kazakhstan) as well as standardized test solutions containing gold, silver, copper, zinc and iron were studied. The best results in silver and gold recovery from Kumistinskoye gold- and silver bearing ores were achieved through use of complex cyanide-thiosulfate solutions as compared to individual cyanide solutions and thiosulfate solutions. It was found that such complex solutions substantially step up leaching process herewith increasing precious metals recovery rates. Thermodynamics of studied chemical processes was calculated. Reaction order, kinetic constant and activation energy of gold leaching process through use of cyanide-thiosulfate solutions were identified. We managed to prove that the sorption rates and holding capacity in process of gold anions recovery with anionite AM-2B are comparable to sorption characteristics for cyanide solutions. "Recent batch experiments by the authors in a pilot scale ball mill (Ø = 0.6m) have demonstrated that a partial replacement of the ball charge by pebbles (25 % pebbles; 75 % steel balls) optimally reduces the ball and power consumption without altering the rate of production of fine material (passing 75 microns). At higher pebble volumes, the production rate of fines was reduced progressively. With the 25/75 composite charge a saving of 13 % in power consumption was achieved, and a saving of 25 % in steel ball consumption is implied. A partial replacement of steel balls by pebbles reduces the overall density of the grinding media in the charge. Taking into consideration that the production rate of fines is usually proportional to the bulk density of the charge in the mill, it would be expected that a composite charge (e.g. 25/75) would coarsen the grind and consequently reduce the rate of production of fines. Pebble wear contributes a small proportion of fines and it doesn’t provide a full explanation of why the 25/75 composite charge has no (or minimal) adverse effects on the rate of production of fines. Clearly, the production of fines across the mill is directly related to the shear and compressive power dissipation density. Accordingly, we hypothesise that the spatial power dissipation distribution meeting the minimum requirements for fines production— at the so-called active regions—are equivalent, or minimally comparable, for both the 25/75 composite and 100 % ball charge operating conditions. To test the hypothesis, we performed DEM simulations to analyse power dissipation in the active regions. 1. INTRODUCTION Comminution remains to be the most expensive process in mining operations, particularly because the energy consumed in this process accounts for 30-70 % of the total cost of a mining operation (Nadolski et al, 2014). Optimization of comminution circuits has been focussed on reducing capital and operating costs and maximising throughput capacity. For existing operations, it is often a challenge if the optimization process recommends retrofitting new ‘major’ equipment. The challenge arises from new capital cost and the difficulty of retrofitting in an existing circuit, while maintaining production (Major et al, 2001). Thus, for existing mining operations, optimization of comminution (cost and throughput) is often limited to operating conditions and/or addition of auxiliary equipment (such as pebble crushers, additional screens and high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR)) (McIvor and Greenwood, 1996; Hart et al, 2001; Powell et al, 2015b)."

The comminution technology based on High-Pressure Grinding Rolls presses (HPGR) application is currently one of the most efficient methods of hard ore comminution from the scope of the energy consumption and the development of industrial HPGR applications in ore preparation circuits is presently the world trend. However, even though the technology is already in use in many countries, which are the leaders in application of modern mining technology, there is still lack of base investigations over the HPGR performance. Throughput and energetic models of HPGR performance are quite well developed, but technological models predicting the comminution effects still needs an in-depth research. In the paper authors present the method of modeling of HPGR products? particle size distribution with using of suitable mathematical models. A basis of the HPGR performance assessment and HPGR-based crushing circuits design is a product?s particle size distribution. In order to precisely determine the particle size distribution of a HPGR product, parameters of product?s particle size distributions should be conditional on the main technical parameters of the roller press like operating pressure and the speed of rolls. The most accurate approximation of a distribution of size particle d appeared the Weibull?s truncated distribution and it is possible to obtain significant relationships between the approximation formula and the value of operating pressure, or feed characteristics. It makes possible a determination of mass recoveries of the product?s respective size fractions and the productivity planning. Instead of pressure (P), the other HPGR operating parameters can be applied, but the P value appears to produce the most relevant relationship. The results of the test work on gold leaching using high strength of cyanide solution in the presence of activators are presented. The major physical and chemical relationships of gold leaching were determined. Intensive cyanidation results of gravity concentrates with various material compositions using an activator are given. Alkyl hydroxamic acid was shown to be a suitable collector for the flotation of pyrochlore from carbonatite niobium oxide ores. In the direct batch rougher flotation from the ore without desliming, over 85% of the pyrochlore can be recovered at about 30% mass pull. Cleaner flotation tests showed that the rougher concentrate can be upgraded. The adsorption mechanisms of octyl hydroxamic acid (OHA) were studied by using high purity pyrochlore and calcite mineral samples and employing analytical measurements such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV/VIS spectroscopy. FTIR showed a shift of the vibrational frequencies of the carbonyl group in hydroxamic acid after adsorption on pyrochlore and calcite, and the shift was more pronounced on pyrochlore. XPS results indicated a lowering of the binding energies (chemical shift) of Nb3d5/2 and Ca2p3/2 electrons on pyrochlore, and the lowering of the binding energies of Ca2p3/2 electrons on calcite, again with the shift being more pronounced on pyrochlore. The results indicated hydroxamic acid formed stronger complexes with pyrochlore than with calcite. Adsorption isotherms indicated that OHA adsorbed more on pyrochlore than on calcite at low concentration. At high concentrations, the adsorption densities on both minerals were similar. All results explained the observed selectivity of the reagents in the flotation of the carbonatite niobium oxide ores.

The results of the test work of four treatment options of three refractory gold-pyrite and gold-arsenic flotation concentrates are presented. These concentrates were obtained during the concentration of primary ores of large gold deposits. It was found that ultrafine grinding of refractory flotation concentrates did not increase the recovery of gold during subsequent cyanidation. The elimination of sulfur and arsenic during oxidative roasting is 99 per cent. 88-93 per cent of gold is recovered by cyanidation from calcines. After biooxidation of the flotation concentrates with a mixture of strains Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans 88-91 per cent of gold is recoverable by direct cyanidation. The recovery of gold from flotation concentrates by pressure oxidation is 88-99 per cent. These results suggest that gold recovery is important but the following strategies would have an impact on a plant performance and would be considered when developing an option to treat refractory ores: capital and operating costs, ore reserves, mine location, infrastructure and qualified staff. Results of the study targeted to development of universal acidic-extraction-precipitation technology for gallium recovery from the sublimates are presented in the paper. This will let to utilize a new non-traditional source for gallium production. Phase composition of gallium containing dust was studied. Forms of gallium in the sublimates were determined. The main form is Ga2O3, however, GaP form is also present in the cottrel dust and Na5Ga3F14 form is present in the dust of aluminum electrolysis. The possibility of gallium concentration was established via secondary pyro-selection of the dust. Kinetics of interaction of dust components with sulfuric acid was studied. The products of the interaction subsequently were leached with water. Optimum conditions for direct leaching with HCl and H2SO4 were determined providing gallium recovery from the cottrel dust and the ash carry outs up to 95 %. Gallium recovery from the primary dust and the secondary dust of aluminum electrolysis was at 52; 64 % and 63; 83 % respectively. Effect of Fe, P, K, Na and Al admixtures for gallium extraction from hydrochloric acid solutions was studied. It was shown that gallium chloride complex (GaCl4-) is extracted into the organic phase from the following acid mixtures: HCl + H2SO4, HCl + H3PO4, HCl + H2SO4 + H3PO4, HCl + HF. Kinetic regularities of gallium extraction in the system (tri butyl phosphate) TBP ? HCl - Ga were studied using diffusion cell method with agitation. Optimum conditions for gallium extraction from complex hydrochloric acid solutions with TBP were found providing 99.9 % recovery and separation coefficient for gallium and iron (III) of more than 25 in one stage. Sodium hydroxide and water were selected as reagents for re-extraction of gallium from the organic phase. Different options for disposal of by-products that are formed in the processing of cottrel dust, ash sublimates and dust of aluminum electrolysis were proposed and tested. "It is suggested that improvement of separation process efficiency in machines and circuits of selective flotation should be based on application of the principle of technology individualization (PIT). This principle is grounded on the following provisions.The mineral composition of ores is used to establish the correlation between the selective reagent mode and the individual value of hydrodynamic conditions of flotation machines together with individual structure of the process flow diagram. The individuality of all sorts of particles identified by methods of process mineralogy was characterized by their distribution according to the rate of flotation (or spectrum). The spectrum identification is carried out by modeling and by experimental and computational method on the data obtained on various types of laboratory flotation machines.The computer-aided test is used to determine the optimal fraction distribution, which reaches the highest possible level of concentration data. The direction of hydrodynamic factors action on concentration data is estimated based on comparison of design base and experimental spectrum. The improvement of separation efficiency in devices is achieved in special-purpose flotation machines (SFM) the design of which provides optimization of hydrodynamic regime in spatially isolated zones. It is demonstrated that the main parameter of SFM operating mode individualization is the rise rate of bubbles going from the chamber into the froth. During this time the composition of particles optimum for separation is formed on its surface. Additionally, it is necessary to coordinate in the zones the residence time of pulp and foam streams with the air consumption. The improvement of separation efficiency in flotation process flow diagrams may be achieved by making several cascades with SFM installed in them. The individual effective structure of the scheme for a definite ores material composition depends on the ratio of particle varieties in the spectrum and is revealed by modeling."

"Comminution is the most energy intensive operation which constitutes the major portion of operating and capital costs of the mineral processing plants. Working at the maximum operating capacity of comminution equipment plays a significant role in the efficiency of the circuit. Appropriate design of cone crusher feed box could result in the choked crushing which is known as a vital factor in achieving target performance. In this research, the non-uniform cone crusher feeding at the Sarcheshmeh copper complex was studied and appropriate measures were taken to solve the problem. The problem resulted in non-uniform and high wear rate of crusher liners and high fluctuations of power draw. In recent decades, the discrete element method (DEM) has been applied successfully to study the effect of different factors on the behavior of particles flow. In this work, various designs for feed box were tested using an in-house developed DEM software called KMPCDEM©. The best feed box design obtained from the simulations was selected, constructed and installed in of the cone crushers. The new feed box design resulted in more uniform feed distribution on the distributor plate of crusher indicated by a reduction of the standard deviation of power draw measurements from 13 to 3 kWh. The better control of the crusher, 49% increase in the crusher throughput and finer and narrower product size distribution were the main outcomes of the installation of the new feed box. Furthermore, the wear rate on mantle and liners of crusher not only decreased but it also became uniform.INTRODUCTION Comminution is the most energy intensive operation which constitutes the major portion of operating and capital costs of the mineral processing plants. Reaching the maximum operating capacity in comminution equipment is a key sign of approaching the nominal productivity of the process. Due to the effect of crusher efficiency on the downstream circuit performance, optimization of the crushing circuits has received considerable attention (Herbst, & Potapov, 2004; Quist, & Evertsson, 2010; Li, Huiqi, McDowell, Glenn R, Lowndes and Ian, 2014; Cleary, Sinnott, Morrison, Cummins, & Delaney, 2017). Improving the performance of crushing circuits not only decreases the capital and operating costs but also increases the efficiency of downstream grinding circuits (Jacobson, Janssen, & Urbinatti, 2010). In cone crushers particles can be subjected to two different modes of compressive breakage; single particle breakage (free feeding) and inter-particle breakage (choked feeding). The maximum efficiency of the cone crusher directly depends on the type of feeding arrangement (Operation Manual, 1977). An appropriate feeding must lead to choked feeding the cone crusher. If the rate and method of feeding the crushers are correctly be executed, the maximum efficiency of the crushers could be available (Jacobson et al., 2010)."

Laboratory study has identified a new application of high voltage electrical pulse technology for pre-weakening ores. In recent years, the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), Newcrest Mining and SELFRAG AG have conducted joint research in validation of pre-weakening of SAG mill feed through the pilot scale tests and comminution circuit simulations. Ten tons of SAG mill feed with a top particle size 150 mm were tested with two pilot scale SELFRAG machines installed in Switzerland. A simulation study using JKSimMet software was carried out to find where the high voltage pulses pre-weakening technique can be best applied in a gold-copper ore comminution circuit, based on the data of the pilot scale SELFRAG tests. A novel comminution circuit was designed, which incorporated SELFRAG to pre-condition part of SAG mill feed (9.5 to 150 mm) and to treat the circulating SAG mill pebbles. The high voltage pulse technology effectively reduced the amount of ‘critical size’ particles in the SAG mill and pre-weakened particle strength for grinding. Attributing to the nature of bi-modal size distribution and the significantly reduced F80, the simulations showed that the SAG mill had spare capacity to process part of hydrocyclone underflow from the secondary ball mill grinding circuit. The simulations indicated that the novel comminution circuit had the potential to remove two MP1000 pebble crushers and one 10 MW ball mill from the existing 2000 t/h grinding circuit. A 5 kWh/t energy reduction by adopting the novel comminution circuit in a gold-copper operation may be realized. This would result in substantial savings in operation costs.

For the moment reserves of high-grade ores are practically depleted requiring ever-increased involvement of low assay raw materials, such as black-shale ores, in industrial operations. Black-shale ores are constituted of minerals containing such valuable components as vanadium, uranium, molybdenum, manganese, and rare-earth elements (REE). We studied technogenic solutions of black-shale ores processing, after uranium, molybdenum, and vanadium were recovered. Mentioned solutions contain rare-earth elements in substantial quantities (S REE 70-100 mg/dm3) that is very important factor taking into consideration the world demand ever-increasing last years. Higher concentrations of iron and aluminum inhibiting REE sorption and extraction recovery are found in solutions. We propose a method of hydrolytic deposition to cleaning solutions from impurity elements (Fe, Al). Study of hydrolytic deposition kinetics allowed identifying optimal conditions to run this process. Rare-earth elements may be recovered from purified solutions through sorption process followed by their further deposition from eluates in form of concentrates. Laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the breakage characteristics of pyrophyllite in a laboratory ball mill. In grinding tests, the breakage characteristics were analyzed using the mathematical kinetic models based on the two breakage functions; the specific rate of breakage and the primary breakage distribution. Two samples having similar chemical composition show identical values in specific rate of breakage. In comparison, there are different values of primary breakage distribution for each sample. The size distributions of the product with various grinding time are well described by the parameters from non-linear searching.

Results of the study of chloride ion concentration effect to osmium-187 sorption from wastewater of copper smelter with use of foreign anionites of different basicity and structure are presented in the work. It was found that the increase of chloride ion concentration in the wastewater helps to increase recovery of osmium using anionites regardless of their nature. The ways to intensify the process are proposed. The method for osmium elution from the anionites with potassium iodate solution was developed. It was shown that the method lets to recover up to 99% of osmium from the anionites. Recommendations for selection of eluents for better recovery of osmium from the anionites were elaborated. It is a well-known fact that usage of reverse cationic flotation in magnetite ores processing enables to improve the quality of magnetite concentrates. We designed an iron ore concentrate technology (with 70 -71 % of iron) including reverse cationic flotation in pneumo-mechanical flotators RIF (developed by RIVS Corporation, Russia) with good biodegradable etheramines as collectors for flotation of quartz. Practical application of high biodegradable flotation reagents decreases environmental impact risk of objects and enterprises of mining industrial complex. This work presents results of development of flotation technology for production of high quality ferruginous concentrates from magnetite ores of Russia and Ukraine deposits. "During 2012 and 2013, Minera Esperanza conducted a series of thickening and deposition trials to identify design and operational parameters associated with increased thickening of its tailings. These trials focused on benchmarking the current solids concentration of tailings (62 - 64%) in anticipation of an increase to 67% solids once two new 45 m diameter deep-cone paste thickeners are commissioned in 2014. These trials studied the sedimentation and rheological characteristics of the existing tailings and performed deposition modelling to assist with developing short- and long-term designs for the tailings storage facility. To verify and optimise these models, Minera Esperanza considered a series of laboratory, pilot, and industrial-scale deposition trials. This paper provides a review of the trials conducted in the laboratory and at industrial-scale and considers the results and optimisations for the short- and long-term design of Minera Esperanza’s tailings storage facility."

"Spherical grinding media (balls) are the most widely used media for comminution of ores by grinding. One way to optimize the grinding process in a tumbling mill is associated with the development and testing of a new media shape. By modelling simulation study of the behaviour of two types of grinding media (balls and tetraballpebs) in the grinding process was conducted to determine the possible advantages of the new media shape. Tetraballpebs are in the shape of tetrahedrons with spherical convex walls. D305 mm and L305 mm Bond ball mill sizes were used in the experiment. They are modelled milling tetraballpebs bodies corresponding by weight to five ball sizes, namely ¾, 7/8, 1, 1¼ and 1½ inches which form the grinding media used in a Bond ball mill. They are cast steel grinding bodies. Studies carried out with both types of grinding media include equal number of milling bodies of the same weight and volume. Having thus ensured a uniform mass of the grinding media and the same number of milling bodies, all other conditions and process parameters being identical, conclusions can be drawn about the influence of the grinding media shape on the grinding process. Compared to steel balls, the tetraballpebs used in laboratory tests carried out in closed cycle by Bond ball mill and the study of the rate of grinding gave five to six per cent higher yield of a control size of minus 0.1 mm. Measurements of the Bond ball mill power consumption demonstrated that tetraballpebs grinding media achieved energy saving of 4.7 per cent for the production of one gram of the control size of minus 0.1 mm."

Andalusite, silimanite and kyanite are polymorphs of aluminosilicate known as kyanite group. Minerals of this group are used in refractory. Sarband andalusite deposit is located in Markazi province in Iran. Mineralogical studies showed that the main minerals of this sample are andalusite (5%~10 %), mica, quartz and feldspar. Processing of the samples was carried out using two sizes, i.e. +500 µm and -500 µm. In the processing of +500 µm scrabble test was carried out on -4750 +500 µm and -2380 +500 µm. For -500+300 µm shaking table and magnetic separation were applied. For -300 µm fraction, flotation was carried out. The results of this tests showed that the processing of Shazand andalusite was not possible, because silica and iron impurities were diffused inside the andalusite mineral grains.

In the current energy-sensitive world, sustainable development in the mineral industry will require new, better and more efficient processes. Novel comminution methods, which offer the prospect of achieving the required outcomes of size reduction and mineral liberation at lower energy consumption, are continually being sought. In the past five years, extensive research using high voltage pulse electrical comminution technology has been carried out at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), in collaboration with selFrag AG. The major outcome of this research is the development of the concept of pre-weakening ore particles by electrical comminution procedures to reduce the energy consumption in the downstream grinding circuit. The research has also verified the preferential liberation of valuable minerals by electrical comminution. Given the advantages, several potential applications of electrical comminution in the mineral industry are proposed, including AG/SAG mill feed pre-weakening, pebble treatment, ball mill feed pre-weakening, early recovery of the liberated valuable minerals, crack/micro crack generation for improved leaching, and smelter slag treatment. For the mineral industry to utilize electrical comminution, two emerging issues identified from the research need to be address. They are the energy consumption by electrical comminution in the locked cycle treatment and the facilities scale up necessary to move this technology from the laboratory to the plant. The paper presents the modeling and analysis of oxidation of pyrite copper-zinc ore samples from the Letnee, Yaman-Kasy and Valentorskoye deposits. It is found, that the oxidized samples contain copper and zinc sulfates that are leached under the sample and water contact. It is shown, that sulfide floatability is decreased by the longer-term oxidation.We advise to improve nonferrous metals recovery by joint leaching and ultrasonic treatment of oxidized compounds. Study of the geotechnological processes of non-ferrous metal extraction, on the basis of two copper-zinc ore deposits shows, that heap leaching is of little use for the ores of the Letnee deposit. Leaching results for the Yaman-Kasy ore showed more promise.

This paper is aimed to elucidate the problem of copper losses in pyrometallurgical slag. Currently, flotation is used to recover copper from the slag and return the metal into the pyrometallurgical process, but the percentage of recovery frequently remains unacceptable. The process of copper leaching from the slag flotation tailings using biologically regenerated ferric sulfate is considered here as an approach to the issue. A sample of the slag flotation tailings containing 0.67% Cu and 4.99% Zn was supplied by the Urals Mining and Metallurgical Company (UGMK, Russia). The Cu and Zn speciation analysis of the sample demonstrated that Cu occurred as 58.1% oxide, 15.4% native Cu, and 18.1% secondary sulfides whereas chalcopyrite proportion was as low as 8.4%. Prevailing Zn species were refractory (58.9% Zn ferrite), and zinc oxide and silicate species made just 37.2% of the total metal content. The silicate generated silica gel that strongly hampered filtration. As demonstrated, Cu recovery is a possibility, which is apparently not the case with Zn. In this work, the stirred tank bioreactor acid leaching employing bacterial Fe3+ sulfate solutions was studied, with ferric sulfate being a product of Fe2+ biological oxidation and not the chemical reactant adding of Fe3+ sulfate. Acidithiobacillus, Sulfobacillus, and Leptospirillum bacilli were employed in Fe2+ biooxidation. Temperature, pH, Eh, S:L ratio, leaching time, and Fe3+ concentration in the source leachate as the process controls were considered. As demonstrated, the process employing biologically regenerated ferric sulfate proved to be more efficient than conventional chemical leaching. Under the optimum conditions, the proportion of Cu extracted into leachate during 2 hours was 79.1%, and that of Zn 27.2%. Precipitation of high-grade Cu sulfide served to extract the metals from the leachate, and Cu extraction was 99.7%. All in all, 23.2% Cu, 0.03% Zn, and 0.02% Fe was returned into the pyrometallurgical process. Keywords: slag flotation tailings, copper leaching
