In industry, mineral and ore are still hand-picked and current automation potential is only utilised in a handful of specific applications. Recently a number of technological developments took place that may increase sorting potential, save mill costs and lead to lower overall tonnage costs. Rare Element Resources Inc., a U.S. based company, has developed a three-stage process for producing a +98% mixed REO powder from hard rock feedstock (-48 mesh, 2.9-4.8% REO) consisting of bastnaesite and ancylite minerals. Firstly, the whole ore is digested in chloride media at low temperature in counter-current flow mode. Secondly, the rare earths (REEs) are selectively precipitated as oxalates directly from an impure pregnant leach solution (PLS). Finally, significant amounts of free acid and water are recovered from the REE-depleted filtrate and subsequently recycled within the process. Excess heat from the oxalate calcination process is captured and reused in the plant. Due to the low leach temperature (45 ºC) and moderate acid dosage (240-297 kg/t, HCl), rare earth oxides (REOs) are preferentially leached out of fine solids leaving most of the base metals (Ba, Fe, and Al ) in the residue. Selective recovery of REEs from the PLS is achieved by mixing dilute oxalic acid (33% H2C2O4) and PLS at elevated temperature (85-95 ºC). The REEs plus thorium are precipitated as oxalates (REE2 (C2O4).xH2O) while the base metals are left behind in the barren filtrate. Multiple batch and pilot test results have confirmed that 50-80% of the oxalic acid can be recovered from the REE-depleted PLS through low-temperature crystallization (10-15 ºC). Typical leach efficiencies of critical rare earths at 45 ºC range from 85-99% (average 93%) while oxalate precipitation at high temperature increases the crystal size of RE oxalates (>450 microns, d80) thereby improving filtration. The economic benefits of this process include elimination of flotation and magnetic separation Capex and driving hydrometallurgical Opex down to $6- 7/kg, REO produced. As part of a comprehensive risk mitigation strategy, Rare Element Resources Inc has operated multiple pilot plants at SGS in Lakefield, Ontario, Canada to optimize counter-current leaching (CCL), REE oxalate precipitation (OXP), and thorium removal circuits. This paper presents pilot testing data from CCL and REE OXP circuits.

The Caledon Outwash is a large deposit of glaciofluvial gravel and sand located 55 km north west of down town Toronto. For the most part it was laid down in a meltwater channel fronting the Paris Moraine about 14,000 years ago. Applying the braided bar model of Eynon and Walker (1974) the principal facies present are imbricated coarse gravels (bar corefacies); crudely stratified, imbricated bar top sandy gravels; and trough crossbedded side channel sands and gravelly sands. Of lesser importance are crossbedded bar front gravels, shallow braided stream facies gravels, and stoss side facies sands and pebbly sands (rare). Lithologically these deposits are characterized by FIGURE I. Geological relationships of Caledon Outwash. Industrial Minerals in Canada up to 95% Ordovician limestone and siltstone in the gravel fraction. A siltstone content of up to 34% requires that beneficiation be carried out for the production of better quality aggregates. Resources remaining are estimated to exceed 500 million tonnes in 3000 ha of the most suitable part of the deposit. Present production is about 4.5 million tonnes per year, shared by several producers.

Experimental determination of the response of an AG/SAG mill treating two components of significantly different impact resistance is challenging for two main reasons: firstly, small scale laboratory tests have yet to be confirmed as valid representations of the full scale milling environment, and secondly pilot plant testing requires 10-20 tonnes of ore per scenario which precludes the use of drill core, rendering the process very expensive. In order to mitigate these difficulties, modelling was considered as a potential way forward. However, as the JKSimMet AG/SAG model currently has no capacity to simulate the interaction of two ore types with differing impact resistance, density and/or feed size distributions, an alternative modelling approach was developed. This approach aims to essentially calibrate the AG/SAG process under a set of given conditions, for which survey data and the ore properties of the main components in the feed blend already exist. This paper describes a new conceptual model, which provides a simplified approach for investigating the multi-component behaviour of two ores of differing hardness/SG in a given AG/SAG milling environment, and which can potentially be used for scale-up from laboratory/pilot testwork and geometallurgical estimation of throughput.

Of the twelve known ore zones on the Sunro property, acquired by Cowichan Copper Co., only the "B" and "C" orebodies of the "River Zone" had been explored sufficiently to indicate the grade and tonnage. The "B" zone was selected for initial production. The portion of this orebody above the main adit level was developed for horizontal-ring, longhole mining. Ore from the stope would be scraped directly to the coarse ore bin. The lack of a suitable mill site on surface, as well as the 8,000-ft. tramming distance, led naturally to the installation ground. I N November, 1960, a lease was obtained by Co-wichan Copper Co. Ltd. (N.P.L.) from Sunro Mines Ltd., covering the main ore (River) zone of the Sunro property. A total of twelve zones had been located on the property. Nine of these lay within the leased area. This Notwithstanding all the debates on climate change and renewable energy, coal remains the world's no.1 primary energy source even in the 21st century. In 2011 alone, total output rose from 420 million t to around 6.6 billion t. Similar growth rates are also expected for the next few years. In order to meet demand, new seams are being tapped and others mined far more extensively. In most cases, this means a move from open-cast to deep mining, and extracting coal from ever greater depths. At the same time, extraction processes such as the room and pillar method are being replaced by longwall mining, which significantly increases seam yield and therefore output. The depth of extraction with new, modified mining methods is increasing rapidly around the world - in most countries, much more rapidly than the corresponding expertise. A trade in mining expertise has therefore developed alongside the coal trade proper. Germany relies on coal imports, but can export mining industry services and advanced mining equipment. Geological conditions in the Ruhr and Saar coalfields forced Germany to drive forward development of deep working for hard coal years ago. For 30 years now, Germany has been mining hard coal at depths of over 1,000 m, and excavation is now at depths up to 1,600 m. Deeper extraction and more extensive excavation posed new challenges for both miners and equipment. Intelligent logistics, modern roadway development methods and longwall mining with ploughs or shearers combined with optimised process coordination offered pioneering solutions - solutions to enable costeffective coal extraction in the long term without compromising safety. Countries such as Russia, the Ukraine, China and the Czech Republic, where extraction is now reaching similar depths, can now benefit from this experience: they do not need to go through the same process of trial and development, but can draw on Germany's findings and ultimately save on costs. Now, Germany is offering this knowledge and experience on the international market on a client- and deposit-specific basis to continue providing mining countries with safe and cost-effective coal mining solutions and secure the energy supply. The presentation gives a number of examples of how international mining companies have used expertise from Germany to better meet the challenges of deep mining.

Lots 11 and 12, Range IX, Calumet island, are underlain by a Grenville metamorphic complex into which sills of tourmaline granite pegmatite have been injected. The pegmatite has an average mode-potash feldspar 65 per cent, sodic plagicdase 10 to 20 per cent, quartz 5 to 20 per cent, tourmaline 10 to 15 per cent, accessory minerals < 5 per cent; it is unzoned except for a narrow border zone. Some of the feldspar has been replaced by calcite. Microcline has been ?partially replaced by sodic plagioclase. Three varieties of tourmaline are present (black, blue, and green) and spectrographic analysis suggests progressive compositional changes during its crystallization. The presence of U- and Th-bearing minerals in the pegmatite prompted the Quebec Nickel Cor,porat10n, Ltd., to explore the possibility of developing the pegmatite but it does not appear that this is economically possible at the ? present time. Tt\e Grenville metamorphic complex consists of recrystallized limestones and calcsilicate rocks of the albite-epidoteamphibolite facies and the amphibolite facies, which were derived from sedimentary rocks. Several of these are dis-equilibrium assemblages, and retrograde metamorphism has probably formed biotite and epidote from hornblende. The schistosity of the gneisses dips steeply eastward. Numerous strike faults are roughly parallel to the schistosity and one of the pegmatite sills is bounded by such a fault, dipping at 60 ° with about one foot of fault breccia. The general structure of the map-area seems to be an asymmetrical syncline ?overturned to the west. The emplacement of the pegmatite is associated with a period of folding, metamorphism, and igneous intrusion.

Votorantim Metais Zinco is a smelting facility which produces SHG zinc, zinc alloys, sulfuric acid, liquid SO2, copper sulfate, cadmium metal and silver concentrate. It is located at Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. This facility has been operating since 1980 and its current capacity is 95,000 tonnes of zinc per year, using mostly imported sulfide concentrates.The plant uses the conventional roast-leach electrowinning (RLE) process, in which iron is removed from the circuit as jarosite. The residues generated by the RLE process, which amount to about 200 t/day (dry weight), were until 10 years ago, deposited in tailing ponds having no impervious lining. More recently, jarosite and other wastes have been deposited in a properly built reservoir, but this is reaching its maximum capacity. In order to decommission these disposal operations and to reclaim the sites in an environmentally acceptable manner, Votorantim Metais concluded in 2004 a rehabilitation project for the old tailings pond and prepared detailed plans for managing the current and future disposal of jarosite-bearing residues. This paper describes the procedure for removing iron from the hydrometallurgical circuit and discusses the past and current status of the residue disposal sites, as well as the future challenges related to the environmentally acceptable handling of iron residues.

"The processes for rare earth (RE) extraction include the decomposition of RE ore concentrate minerals, and the concurrent or subsequent leaching of the rare earth elements (REEs) from the decomposed minerals. Ore beneficiation concentrate can be decomposed by, for example, acid roasting, caustic cracking, and chlorination. The REEs can be selectively extracted. The nature of the REE extraction process depends on the concentrate mineralogy and the targeted products. Based on the experience of the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) in RE processing, this paper reviews REE extraction from the major RE minerals, including bastnaesite, monazite, xenotime, ion-adsorption clay, allanite, cerite, and eudialyte. An update on the development of RE extraction processes is also provided.INTRODUCTIONRE processing usually involves two operation stages, physical processing and chemical processing. Physical processing, also known as ore beneficiation, separates the RE minerals from gangue minerals to produce an RE mineral concentrate. Chemical processing, which includes extraction and separation processes, converts the RE mineral concentrate to an RE compound which is either an end product or an intermediate product for the subsequent production of individual REEs or other compounds. The RE extraction process uses one or more reagents to decompose the RE minerals and to leach the REEs into solution. The RE separation process uses solvent extraction, ion-exchange, or chemical precipitation to produce either rare earth oxides (REOs) or individual REEs. The authors have previously reviewed RE ore beneficiation processes (Zhang & Edwards, 2012). This paper focuses on extraction processes for a variety of RE minerals. Table 1 gives the chemical compositions of the RE minerals mentioned in this paper. The varieties of RE extraction methods use many different reagents. These reagents are mainly inorganic acids, alkalis, salts, and chlorine gas. The commonly used acids include sulfuric acid (H2SO4), hydrochloric acid (HCl), and nitric acid (HNO3). Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) are the most common alkalis. Salts include ammonium sulphate ((NH4)2SO4), ammonium chloride (NH4Cl), and sodium chloride (NaCl). HCl is normally used to extract RE from silicate ore minerals such as allanite and gadolinite. The alkalis and H2SO4 are mainly used to leach REs from phosphate ores minerals like monazite and xenotime. The carbonate ore RE minerals such as bastnaesite can be treated using either acids or alkalis. HNO3 is mainly used to leach eudialyte and apatite. The extraction of REs from ionadsorption clay deposits uses salt solutions. Chlorine gas (Cl2) is exclusively used in the RE chlorination process which can be used to treat any RE minerals."

These rules are often fairly complex and not easily understood. This article attempts to explain in plain and understandable language the mechanics and benefits of one of the more frequently encountered provisions, the ""Section 85 election"".IntroductionThe Canadian resource industries are probably singled out for more special attention under this country&apos;s tax legislation than any other industry. This special treatment is, of course, not always welcomed by the industry, such as where unnecessarily restrictive taxation is perceived to exist or where agonizingly complex tax legislation must be dealt with. On the other hand, certain provisions in the tax legislation treat the industry in a relatively favourable manner, including a number of rules which, in recognition of the high risk and capital requirements of the resource sector, serve to facilitate the structuring of resource ventures."

Twelve years ago, Kennecott Utah Copper modernized its Refinery in conjunction with the modernization of the Kennecott Smelter with the latest flash smelting and flash converting technologies. The Refinery modernization consisted of installation of new polymer concrete cells, installation of KIDD TPS (total production stripping) system, installation of automated materials handling system, and the construction of a new hydrometallurgical slimes treatment process and precious metals plant. This paper outlines the Refinery operations and process improvements. Also presented are the newly implemented technologies and operating results of one of the world&apos; s largest and most modern electrolytic copper refineries.

As productivity in coal extraction demands increase in underground coal mines, the industry is faced with finding new ways to support production without jeopardising safety. In modern mines the capacity and scale of longwall coal extraction has steadily increased to a point that support processes are failing to keep pace. In particular, roadway development is continually placed on the critical path of activities which maintain mine production, so any inefficiency in this area is quickly exposed. Original equipment manufacturers are under immense pressure to modify their machines to be more interconnected with each other, with machine communication and logistical sharing of space becoming a known requirement. This paper looks at the changing trends in mining practice, analysing available technology as well as currently emerging research into hard automation and discusses the need to integrate machinery and processes in order to see increases in productivity and safety.

Common practice for the preparation of permanent mold for aluminum casting is to coat the mold with a ceramic suspension to obtain a chemically stable interface with the aluminum melt. This practice serves two purposes: first, it helps the thermal regulation of the mold and second, it prolongs its life. The possibility of increasing the coating durability by applying it by thermal spray is appealing. Plasma spray of zirconium oxide based coatings was performed on H13 tool steel to study the coating’s thermal fatigue resistance. A unique dip test setup was used to characterize the thermal fatigue resistance of the coatings and of bare H13 steel. Observations of the failure mechanism bring an insight on the requirements of the coating to maximize its durability.

"With some justification, people have long complained about the indefinition of ore reserves. Perhaps they were led to expect too much; from former and easier definition practices in the once common underground mines with exposed and available assets, where the obsolete term &apos;ore in sight&apos; was at least partly literal. But such mines have become rarer, and their underground development less affordable. For most projects, valuations and its definitions have thus been advanced from actual to prospective mines, leaving a very wide gulf between &apos;what is there&apos; and &apos;what may happen to it&apos;. This brings the double challenges of reduced geological and technical assurance and the protraction of economic uncertainties.This paper avoids the popular field of regional resources, being confined to what may possibly be mined within single or closely grouped deposits. For these, many estimates of tonnage and grade must be made, defined and declared long before assessment of feasibility; and the uncertainties of the latter make it an unsound base for defining the earlier quantities. Despite the best of intentions, implied or inferred promises may proveimpossible to honour.A simpler framework of definitions is suggested, to some extent reverting to an earlier dependence on supporting work rather than on opinions of economic assurance or future events that are more properly the functions of production and cash flow schedules."

Purpose It is the purpose of this paper to describe the application of underground conveyor systems to the transportation of ore in the Sullivan mine of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of "Canada, Limited, at Kimberley, British Columbia. General Applications Conveying has been recognized as a means of underground transportation for a great number of years but only during the past fifteen to twenty years has there been any extended application of the method to underground metal-mine operations. Coal miners became conveyor conscious before metal miners. Probably one reason for this is the fact that there are more flat coal seams than flat orebodies. A second reason is that coal is light and is a less abrasive material than most metallic ores. The vast improvements made in belt construction during the past few years, together with improvements in mechanical conveyor equipment, have gone a long way in making this form of transportation attractive to the metal miner. In new mines being opened today, or in major extensions to older mines, the possibilities of conveyor transportation should receive serious consideration. There may not be any widespread application of the belt conveyor as a replacement for the conventional hoisting and locomotive haulage. Where there is an application, tl1e saving in cost can be appreciable and many operating ad-vantages gained because of ease in operation.

A mass and energy balance for a modern electric arc furnace ("EAF") indicates that about 70% of the process energy losses are contained in the off-gas as chemical energy in the form of uncombusted CO and H2 and as thermal energy. Given the magnitude of the off-gas energy losses, improved EAF energy efficiency needs to focus first on controlling furnace practice to maximize "in-EAF" energy utilization and second, on recovering residual energy in the off-gas existing in the fume system. This paper focuses on the application of off-gas analyzers, sensors and process models to control and optimize "in-EAF" energy utilization efficiency. The paper will also discuss the application of heat recovery technology to EAF steelmaking.

"The Swayze gold mine is an Archean vein deposit in northern Ontario. The veins are superimposed on a conjugate joint system and are contained within an anastomosing alteration envelope in a metadiorite body. Reserves were estimated on the basis of fire assays of channel samples and car load samples from underground mine openings, surface and underground diamond drilling and surface trenching. A semi-variogram constructed from channel samples along one of the drifts yielded a horizontal, regionalized influence of approximately 9.0 m. Common industry practice has been to use 6.1 m for similar deposits in Ontario. Proven ore was defined from underground openings. The maximum extrapolation distance for proven ore along strike and dip from a data point is taken to be 6.1 m. Probable ore is extrapolated 7.6 m from a data point in a mine opening or from a drill intersection. Possible mineralization is based on geological continuity one-half the distance to a neighbouring data point.The mineral inventory estimate of 1.45 million tonnes at a grade of4.8 g Au/tonne gives an excellent outline of the geology of the deposit. The deposit contains 313 000 tonnes of ore reservesat a fully diluted grade of6.9 g Au/tonne. These figures include dilution for several reasons: (I) a 2.1 m mining width is used rather than the more typical 1.5 m width to allow for over break because of the shallow dip of some vein zones; (2) over break is allowed for adjacent to major unmineralized dykes; and (3) grams of gold are deleted from estimates to allow for the mining of unavoidable minor dykes.A personal computer with off-the-shelf software was used to compile 712 geologically defined ore blocks and sort them into a number of revealing categories. The computer was used to perform grade sensitivity tests, as well as to evaluate depth potential. Hopefully, the reiterative aspect of the method has randomized the errors and helped to cancel their effects."

"Yielding bolt has been widely used for rock reinforcement in mining and civil engineering in high stress conditions. However, the interaction mechanism of yielding bolt and matrix mass is still not clear at present, and no analytical model is available to predict its reinforcement effect quantitatively. In this paper, the mainstream yielding rock bolts were reviewed firstly. After that, a coupling model is proposed to account for the interaction between yielding bolt and matrix mass. Based on the plane strain axial symmetry assumption and the incremental theory of plasticity, equilibrium equations and compatibility equations of matrix mass, and also the response of yielding rock bolt are deduced theoretically. The proposed method was programmed in Visual Basic development environment, and a semi-analytical solution for the coupling model is achieved. The reinforcement mechanism of yielding bolt in conventional tunnelling is clearly demonstrated through an illustrative case study. The reinforcement effect of yielding bolt is estimated quantitatively, and the distribution of axial force along the bolt is presented. In addition, the validity of proposed method is verified by numerical simulations. INTRODUCTIONHigh stress in surrounding rock mass can cause serious stability problems such as massive squeezing in soft rock and rock burst in hard rock. It is observed that many conventional rock bolts failed when experiencing large displacement, which implies that they are too stiff to sustain large deformation and dynamic conditions (Stillborg, 1994; Hoek et al., 1995). Yielding bolt, which can also be called energy-absorbing bolt, has been widely used for rock reinforcement in mining and civil engineering for these conditions (Neugebauer, E., 2008). This paper focuses on the static reinforcement effects of the yielding bolts with analytical method and numerical simulations."

For over 40 years the Institute of Innovative Technology EMAG has specialized in the development of systems and equipment for laboratory and on-line monitoring of coal quality parameters, as well as the implementation of these systems and devices in mines and power stations. Some of these systems, based on advanced radiation detection techniques such as ?-ray backscattering (ALFA-06 and ALFA -06/T systems) or dual energy ?-ray transmission measurement (ALFA-06/2E ash meter), and also the ALFA-06/3E system applying microwave technology for the measurement of moisture, have had numerous applications in Poland. At present, over 100 systems and devices are used in Polish hard and brown coal mines. For over 10 years, EMAG has been specializing in the development of systems and devices, based on natural gamma measurement technology. An on-line ash meter, RODOS and RODOS Ex, based on measurement of natural gamma radioactivity of coal, has been developed and put into operation. This technique has been also used in developing the portable ash meter WALKER and laboratory analyzer GAMMA NATURA. The paper briefly presents features of the above-mentioned devices, their limits and their obtained accuracy, but in particular refers to the laboratory analyzer, GAMMA NATURA, as the first such device in the world, and presents the results of ash and moisture content measurement in hard, brown coals and potassium salts. The possible applications and advantages of the device in coal mines are discussed. The paper also presents the implementation results of the portable ash meter, WALKER, and the on-line ash meter, RODOS, that is used underground in coal mines.

NO. 3 winze, the sixth shaft to be sunk on the San Antonio property, is practically a duplicate of No. 3 shaft, which was the main shaft prior to the installation of the larger hoisting equipment in 1939. It is collared on the tenth, or 1,500-ft., level, and goes down vertically to the sixteenth, or 2,500-ft., level, with a loading pocket, spill pocket, and sump below this. It is 1,000 feet east of No. 3 shaft. All ore, men, and materials are handled through the latter. The winze location with reference to the rock formation is shown in Figure 1. (In plan, this section strikes N.30°E. and cuts most of the main orebodies of the mine normal to their strike.) It is collared eighty feet inside the footwall contact of the basalt and cuts through it before reaching the eleventh level. In this location there will be no ore tied up in shaft pillars, as the closest ore to the shaft is on the tenth level, and here it is eighty feet northeast of the collar. The winze headframe and hoist-room straddle the main haulage to the No. 3 shaft, on the tenth level (see Figure 2). At no time during the excavation for the headframe and hoist-room was the general routine work of this haulage held up.
