"Several types of stratiform and epigenetic gold deposits have been found in New Brunswick, It is the purpose of this paper to describe and classify the epigenetic deposits and demonstrate their relationship to tectonic evolution. The stratiform deposits are mostly volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits that are described elsewhere (Davies et al., 1985).The auriferous epigenetic deposits include quartz-carbonate veins and stockworks, polymetallic veins, contact metasomatic, porphyry copper and volcanic breccia (epithermal) deposits. These epigenetic deposits are concentrated in major fault zones that define or are close to the boundaries of tectonostratigraphic terranes or terranes and cover sequences. The host rocks of the deposits were subjected to extensive crustal thickening resulting from thrusting and/or high angle reverse faulting.The gold deposits north of the Avalon Terrane occur indilatent structures related to mainly dextral wrench faulting that postdated the episode of crustal thickening. The deposits along the southern margin of the Avalon Terrane occur in structures related to late phase thrusting."

"Development of the final slope for the 340 m (1200 ft) high hanging wall at Cassiar Mine precipitated an area of deep seated instability involving an estimated 17.6 million tonnes. The deformation mechanisms involved squeezing of soft deformable serpentinite rocks in the toe which caused planar sliding and graben toppling of the stronger sedimentary rocks in the middle and upper sections of the slope. Although movement rates up to 150mm/day were recorded, by understanding the controls on failure, the mine was able to install a suitable monitoring system and complete the open pit with only minor loss of the mineable ore. Accelerated mining was required in the last full year of operation. This paper describes the deformation behaviour, failure mechanisms and back analysis results for the failure. The monitoring systems and operational aspects related to the failure are also presented.IntroductionCassiar Mine is located in steep mountainous terrain in northern British Columbia approximately 1200 km north of Vancouver (Fig. I). During the final mining phase of the open pit, instability developed in the approximately 340 m high hanging wall (east wall) slope. A unique graben toppling mechanism was identified based on detailed assessment of slope monitoring data and visual observations. Comprehensive slope monitoring enabled mining to continue even though movement rates as high as 150 mm/day were being recorded. Three-dimensional limit equilibrium back analyses and numerical modelling have been used to assess the various controls on the slope movements and to understand the failure mechanism."

"Non-ferrous metal concentrates contain typically 7 – 12% water when received at the smelter. Removal of this water prior to smelting is always economically feasible because unnecessary heating of vapour (from 100 °C to 1200 °C) in the smelting furnace can thus be eliminated. This results in major reduction in CO2 emission and direct annual savings of several millions of dollars due to improved energy efficiency. Next step to further improve the energy efficiency, to gain substantial savings and simultaneously cut emissions is to select modern technology for the drying process. Consequently, all CO2 emission will be completely eliminated (from 40,000 tpy down to 0 tpy), NOx emission will be negligible, and the SO2 emission will be reduced by over 99 %. Switching of conventional direct heated drying technology to modern indirect steam drying brings, in addition to dramatic emission reduction, additional savings due to further improved energy efficiency. Direct energy savings count for 900 – 1300 MJ/t H2O, which depending on the concentrate feed rate and its moisture load can be worth several millions of dollars every year. Additional savings in operational expenses related to drying and gas cleaning may be worth a few million dollars more. Sustainability is a key issue today, and major savings together with significant emission reduction are readily available by proper technology selection for concentrate drying. INTRODUCTIONSustainability is a decisive principle in any process industry accompanied with emissions and high amount of energy. This is of significant importance in metal processing, including concentrate drying, where minimum impact on the environment, people and community are targeted, and all this with minimum cost, effort and resources. Therefore, special attention is paid to high energy efficiency, low energy consumption with preferable utilization of waste energy, safety issues, availability, level of maintenance, cost of maintenance, and emissions among other things.Non-ferrous metal concentrates can be dried using various techniques. Conventional drying based on direct heating, and use of fossil fuels for drying energy has almost entirely been replaced by steam drying. It is based on indirect heating and it has become the most dominant drying technology for copper concentrates during the last decade with over 90% of the market share of all new dryer installations. Among the steam dryers the Kumera Steam Dryer is the most pre-dominant technology with some 70% of all new dryer installations world-wide."

"Minnova Inc. has five operating divisions thoughout Canada. One of them is Lac Dufault which was established in 1964.Lac Dufault is located 15 km north of Rouyn-Noranda, in what is known as Noranda volcanic centre, in northwestern Quebec. For more than 25 years, Lac Dufault has produced copper, zinc, gold and silver from four different mines: Norbec, Millenbach, Corbet and now Ansil.Ansil, officially in production since July 1989, is one of the deepest mines presently in production in Quebec. THE property of Howey Gold Mines, Limited is situated at Red Lake, Ontario, one hundred and seventy-five miles east of Winnipeg and eighty miles north of the Canadian National Railway line. The mine has been a continuous producer since April, 1930, and at present is hoisting 1,350 tons of ore per day. The shaft consists of three compartments (see Figure 1, sketch B). Hoisting is done by two skips in balance, one of which is interchangeable with a cage. Sinking had been carried out at three different periods. From the surface to the 550-foot level, the sets had been spaced at seven-foot intervals, from the 550-to the 1,060-foot level at six feet, and from the 1,060-to the 1,500-foot level at five feet. During the five years of operation, the shaft had become so badly worn, due to spill from the tipples and, to a certain extent, from the loading pockets, that re-timbering was considered necessary. It should be explained that no crushing is done underground because of the ad verse effect this would have on the efficiency of the sorting. The grizzly rail clearance above the ore pockets is fourteen inches and consequently the ore hoisted is extremely coarse. More than average spill from the loading pockets and tipples under such conditions is inevitable, and it is debatable whether underground crushing with consequent increased sorting costs would not be justified. The cost of complete re-timbering according to standard practice would have been prohibitive both directly and indirectly: A lengthy shut-down of the shaft, with the consequent disorganization of the staff and workmen, could not be considered. Accordingly, it became necessary to devise some method of repair that could be carried to completion in a very limited period of time. The shaft timber for the first 250 feet was not in need of repair. From the 250-foot to the 1,060-foot level the wall plates, posts, and blocking were in good condition. These had been protected by a one-inch plank lining put in at various periods during the past three years without interfering with hoisting operations. The end plates and dividers, however, could not be protected in this manner because of the lack of skip clearance. It was decided that, if the dividers in this section could be replaced, the shaft would be as satisfactory as if completely re-timbered. Several factors had to be taken into consideration in deciding on a suit-able method of repair. In the first place, the tipple plates had to be re-designed. To complete the job in a reasonable time, not only had work to be done on the tipple, but simultaneously from several points in the shaft itself. Since all power cables, pipe lines, etc., were in the manway compartment of the shaft, this compartment had to be left undisturbed.

Abstract -The Molopo Farms Complex is a major, layered ultramafic/mafic, early Proterozoic intrusion which is totally covered by sediments of the Karoo and Kalahari Formations and situated in southern Botswana and northeastern South Africa. The approximately 3000 m thick, generally fine- to medium-grained ultramafic and mafic cumulates are intrusive into equivalents of Transvaal Supergroup sediments and lavas. Multiphase deformation resulted in tilting and segmentation of the Complex into individual tectonic blocks. Sr isotopes document at least two chemically distinct parental liquids which interacted in a complex manner to form an approximately 1000 m thick rhythmically layered succession which straddles the ultramafic/mafic boundary. Repeated mixing resulted in a complex cryptic layering pattern and numerous sulfide-enriched layers which contain significant PGE +Au concentrations.

Plant and laboratory test work was performed in order to optimize a copper/zinc flotation separation circuit at Matagami concentrator, Canada. The testing identified a significant difference between the laboratory testing and the plant flotation, particularly for the sphalerite recovery in the rougher copper concentrate. Tests indicate that sphalerite recovery of the flotation concentrate in the laboratory testing was significantly higher than in the plant. The ToF-SIMS surface analysis identifies surface species responsible for the discrepancy in Zn recovery. It shows that sphalerite flotation is in response to the collector attachment and a significant enrichment of Cu on the surface of sphalerite grains. A comparative surface chemical analysis was performed on both sphalerite and chalcopyrite grains from the plant flotation and laboratory testing in order to identify surface species variability between the two testing. Two significant observations were revealed. First, there is considerably more hydrophilic iron oxyhydroxide on sphalerite surface from the plant flotation sample relative to those from the lab testing. The secondary coating likely completely or partially passivates sphalerite surfaces, reducing Cu enrichment and hence sphalerite floatability. Secondly, comparing the surface chemistry on sphalerite and chalcopyrite, the hydrophilic iron oxyhydroxide species have preference for the sphalerite grains relative to chalcopyrite. Despite numerous studies on the effect of galvanic coupling during grinding, there is limited documented evidence on the effect of the milling environment on the flotation and plant operations. This observation suggests that interaction between sulphide minerals and grinding media have a significant influence on subsequent flotation. This paper discusses the results of a detailed surface chemical evaluation of sphalerite grains from both the plant and laboratory testing in the context of grinding environments and pulp chemistry.

In September, 1953, seismographs were installed in the Crowsnest Pass area of Alberta and British Columbia to study the 'bumps' which were occurring in the coal mines at Fernie and Coleman, and to investigate the possibility that they might be related to minor earthquakes in the area. During the initial phase of the work, three seismographs were operated at widely separated stations, two in the region of coal mines at Coal Creek and Coleman and one at Turner Valley, distant from any mining operations. Some earthquakes were recorded at all three stations and, in addition, many small disturbances were recorded by the seismographs located near the mines, especially -by the instrument at Goal Greek. A closer network of radio-linked seismographs was then in-stalled near Fernie, the records of which definitely established that the small disturbances were occurring in the mine workings, both active and inactive. No relationship was established between bumps and local earth-quakes in the area. This work was initiated as a -co-operative effort with the Fuels Di-vision of the Mines Branch, Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, which has undertaken a study into the phenomena of ground stress relief in underground mine workings.

A knowledge of the electrical surface characteristics of minerals is all-important in the choice of treatments to up-grade and beneficiate them. At their solid-liquid contacts, there are transfers of ionic species, which for insoluble oxide minerals are the H+ and OH-ions. The adsorption density of these ions can be detected by carrying out potentiometric titrations, and this paper describes the automation of such an apparatus. The details are discussed fully and the validity of the method is demonstrated by flotation tests.

As an alternative to heavy water cooling, reactors cooled by organic liquids are being actively developed in Canada under the sponsorship of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. One of the areas in which development has been required is that of core materials. The factors affecting the selection of fuel canning and coolant tube materials are discussed. It is shown that S.A.P. is a potentially attractive material for these applications. The fabrication of fuel sheathing is discussed. Difficulties met due to large inclusions and blistering due to high hydrogen contents have been overcome by magnetic separation and vacuum sintering of the powders. High-quality tubes can now be produced by extrusion to finished size. A study has been made of the mechanical properties of fuel-sheathing tubes and bar stock. The stress rupture properties of the tubes subjected to uniaxial and biaxial stress have been determined. The biaxial stress tests were performed by internal pressurization. "The free-world production of columbium ore concentrates has doubled in the last five years. St. Lawrence Columbium and Metals. Corporation has contributed largely to this expansion, its production rate increasing from 720 tons of concentrates per year in 1961 to 2 200 tons in 1965.To follow the normal market development, the Company initiated an engineering study aimed at establishing the most economical mining methods, thus permitting it to increase its milling rate from 1,000 tpd in 1964 to 2,000 tpd in 1967 and possibly to 3,000 tpd in 1968. The results of this study pointed out the advantages to be gained in converting from an open pit to an under-ground operation. This paper describes how the mining engineering department has successfully developed ""stopes"" from the walls of its No. 2 open pit, in order to assure continuity of its operation during the interval required to develop its underground mine."

"Pre-oxidation and cyanide leaching behavior of gold in the presence of sulfide minerals were reviewed, focused on the effects of oxygen injection in the gold leaching process. Generally, pre-oxidation and gold leaching kinetics from iron sulfide refractory minerals, such as pyrite, pyrrhotite, marcasite, pentlandite and arsenopyrite, can be enhanced with higher dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration. However, most of copper sulfide minerals dissolved well both in water and cyanide solutions, and copper from the minerals consumed DO and cyanide to oxidize and leach. Only in the presence of chalcopyrite, gold leaching was effectively occurred with increasing DO. However, chalcocite and covellite severely retarded gold leaching. Stibnite, an antimony mineral, formed a passive film on the gold surface under any DO conditions, and it slowed gold leaching. This impeding effect can be alleviated by leaching at low pH or adding lead salt. Using oxygen and lead together can make synergistic effect in oxidation of sulfide minerals and can enhance gold extraction. Depending on the mineralogical characteristics of the ore, the optimum DO and lead concentrations can be optimized. However, lead can cause environmental problems, and so its dosage should be minimized or eliminated by substituting it with oxygen injection.INTRODUCTIONGold ores containing sulfide minerals are becoming more significant as high grade gold oxide deposits are continuously becoming difficult to find. In light of this situation, to produce more gold, recovery methods from refractory gold ore containing various sulfide minerals should be investigated. Generally, sulfide minerals have impeding effects on gold leaching: formation of a passive film on the gold surface, high consumption of chemicalssuch as cyanide and oxygenduring leaching, reduction of gold cyanide by sulfide ions, etc. (Senanayake, 2008). Therefore, sulfides must be properly treated for better gold recovery. Pre-oxidation of sulfide minerals by injecting pure oxygen can decrease the impeding effects in gold leaching. Prior to cyanidation, sulfide minerals can be oxidized to metal hydroxide and sulfate form, which consume negligible cyanide in the following cyanidation circuit (Bodnaras et al., 1993). Moreover, gold cyanidation can be enhanced by increasing concentration of the dissolved oxygen (DO). In general, the optimum concentration ratio of [CN-]/[O2] is calculated as 6, but it goes higher in the real system (Marsden &House, 2006), which means that the reaction is typically controlled by DO concentration."

INTRODUCTION IN PREPARING this paper for the District 4 Meeting, three factors had to be considered. First, the paper must fit the time alloted; second, it must give a general picture of the geology for those unfamiliar with the property; and third, it must contain some new material in order to be of interest to local delegates. The most comprehensive extant discussion of the geology of the property of McKenzie Red Lake Gold Mines, Limited, is contained in Horwood's report on the general Red Lake area ( 1). This report is the 'bible' of the area, and a general paper on the geology of this particular mine would almost certainly appear to be a condensation of it. It was thought, therefore, that the most suitable procedure would be to base the general outline on Horwood' s report, to extend that outline where possible from information gained since its publication, and finally to leave dangling for the contemplative geologist some of the ideas and problems which ?are currently under consideration. LOCATION AND HISTORY The property of McKenzie Red Lake Gold Mines, Limited, is in Dome township, in the Red Lake mining division of northwestern Ontario. The mine is on McKenzie Island, about four miles north, by water, of the Hasaga mine and old Howey mine.

"The valuation of mineral properties in the U.S. is only partially regulated. The regulations which have jurisdiction or impact appear to have such mainly as a consequence of unintended fallout, since the regulations were designed for other purposes. Court case history can also be important. The combined results are a mixture of bad and good, with important lessons to be learned.Since 1981, the Securities and Exchange Commission has prohibited U.S. listed companies from reporting quantitative estimates of mineralization and the value of mineralization, other than proven and probable reserves. This results in the minerals appraiser (valuator) working with a shortage of data in his everyday work, both on the subject property and in sales analysis.Between 1989 and 1995, all 50 states and essentially all Federal agencies adopted the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) for real property appraisals (valuations). The major national appraisal societies also require their members to abide by USPAP. A significant portion of minerals appraisals must now follow these standards. This paper will discuss the content of USPAP. It provides a very good framework for the valuation of a minerals property or a mine, both as real property and as a business. However, the credentialing standards for real property appraisers are now prohibitive for minerals appraisers."

"Suggestions have been made that the appraisal of mining assets using discounted cash flow techniques should be based solely on proven and probable reserves in reliance upon the widespread international recognition of uniform resource definitions. Following a review of general accepted valuation principles, a survey of the literature and, most importantly, a review of real transactions in the open market, it is clear that valuators should not be constrained by the growing acceptance of modern mineral resource codes. On the contrary, valuation practitioners should be encouraged to examine all classes of mineralization and, after making due allowance for risk, to utilize all mineral resources as a basis for determining fair market value.INTRODUCTIONGreat strides have been made recently in achieving an international consensus on mineral reserve and resource definitions and classifications. The Australasian JORC code, the CIM code in Canada, the SME proposal in the United States and even a proposed code from the United Nations have all brought the objective within reach.Unfortunately, this success has led to another problem for mineral valuators. Certain securities regulators, tax collectors and their ilk have begun to expound on the opinion that discounted cash flow projections carried out to calculate net present values that would form the basis for a valuation determination should be based solely on proven and probable reserves. A process has been evaluated, on a continuous pilot plant scale, to treat refractory gold arsenopyrite/pyrite concentrates. The process consisted of biological leaching to partially oxidise sulphides, followed by pressure leaching for complete sulphide oxidation and arsenic precipitation, followed by liquor neutralisation and cyanidation of the autoclave residue for gold recovery. This paper provides a brief description of the treatment flowsheet and discusses some of the main parameters and results of the process. During integrated pilot plant campaigns, it was confirmed that acceptable sulphide oxidation and gold extraction of 96-98% could be achieved by a two-stage oxidation with BIOX® (4 days total retention time) followed by PDX (40 minutes retention time at 220°C). Only partial arsenic precipitation was achieved in the autoclave, followed by complete precipitation by neutralization under atmospheric conditions. The overall process could be significantly simplified, and capital and operating costs reduced, with a flowsheet modification allowing all of the BIOX® liquor to bypass the autoclave directly to the neutralization circuit.

"Using the calculated (Thermo-Calc software) and experimental methods (SEM, TEM, EMPA, DSC, XRD, etc.) the phase composition, structure and hardening of aluminium alloys of the Al-Ca-Zn-Mg system were studied in the following range: 2. 5%Mg, up to 10% Ca, and up to 14% Zn (wt%). Fragments of this quaternary phase diagram in the aluminium corner were constructed, including the liquidus surface, as well as some vertical sections. It was shown that the relatively large amount of zinc enters in the Ca-containing phase, which formula can be described as (Al,Zn)4Ca. An increase of Zn content leads to formation of Al4Ca primary crystals at lower concentrations of calcium. The eutectic (Al)+(Al,Zn)4Ca has a fine structure and aluminide particles are capable to spheroidization during the heat treatment at temperature 500 C. The maximal level of hardness observed on calcium containing alloys was higher than 200 HV, what gives the reason to expect good strength properties. With an example of an Al-9% Zn-2,5%Mg-3,5% Ca model experimental alloy based on the (Al)+(Al,Zn)4Ca eutectic, a principal possibility of manufacturing thin rolled sheets was demonstrated.INTRODUCTION Aluminum alloyed with calcium was first studied in 1970-80s by such authors as Piatti (1976), Moore (1978, 1980), Il'enko (1985), Swaminathan (1990), and Perez-Prado (1997) as superplastic materials. In particular, the alloy systems Al-Ca-Zn were studied (Il'enko, 1985, Swaminathan, 1990, Perez-Prado, 1997). For some time there was no new published works concerning the aluminum-calcium alloys. During the last years many works were published dedicated to the calcium alloying of magnesium alloys (Kim, 2011; Xu, 2011; Aljarrah, 2008; Bakhsheshi, 2014). This urged the authors (Belov, Naumova & Akopyan, 2016) to start studying cast and wrought aluminum-calcium alloys for construction (2008–2014). There is almost no information in the literature concerning triple and more complex diagrams of the aluminum-based system states with calcium and other elements. In recent work, parts of the state diagrams are plotted for the aluminum angle zone: Al-Ca-Mg-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Bazlova, 2016), Al-Ca-Ni-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Bazlova, 2017), Al-Ca-Si-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Akopyan, 2017) and others. Special attention was paid to the study of the system Al-Ca-Zn-Mg (Naumova, 2017). Based on this system creation of advanced extra-high tensile alloys is planned. Wrought extra-high tensile alloys series 7??? based on the system Al-Zn-Mg-Cu are well studied."

Current AG and SAG mill circuits have continued the trend to larger, fewer mills. These large mills place a significant additional load on the discharge systems and it has become imperative that the designs of these mill discharge systems are evaluated carefully to ensure maximum efficiency and have the capacity to be able to handle the increased mill discharge volumes. The current generation of multiphysics modeling tools allow a detailed analysis of AG and SAG mill discharge performance. The combination of Discrete Element Method modeling and Computational Fluid Dynamics allows the designer to model in detail all aspects of a mill discharge performance. This includes a detailed description of the build-up of solids and slurry in a mill discharge, the recycle of material back into the mill through the grates, the relative wear rates and the occurrence of overloading at the pinch points. These tools allow intelligent decisions to be made regarding the type of discharge arrangement, pan lifter geometry, and discharge cone design, so as to ensure that the discharge is capable of handling the duties required for a specific installation. This paper details the current state of the art in these modeling tools, and provides an overview of some recent applications.

"Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) based positioning and navigation systems have been recently developed and implemented by AQUILA Mining Systems Ltd. on blast hole drills and electric cable shovels in Canadian open pit coal and iron ore mines. These systems enable the location of the drill bit or the shovel tracks to be accurately determined in three dimensions. The position of the drill or shovel is displayed to the operator via a real-time, Moving Map Display (MMD) on an LCD-VGA screen. The MMD allows the operator to accurately navigate the drill from blast hole to blast hole or maintain a desired shovel grade or face position, with respect to displayed bench features. The maps for the MMD are downloaded from the mine office via laptop or radio link as required or as mining plans change.To obtain reliable, accurate and real-time3D positions of mobile mining equipment, proven GPS technology has to be utilized. The GPS components need to operate reliably under the severe environmental conditions that exist on board mobile mining equipment. In addition, they have to contend with varying pit geometry’s and satellite configurations, with little or no performance degradation. These issues were initially examined in December1993 during a feasibility project between AQUILA and Gregg River Resources Ltd., in relation to implementing GPS systems on blast-hole drills.To achieve certain design objectives, AQUILA Mining Systems Ltd. has developed navigation systems for cable shovels and blast-hole drills based around off-the-shelf, high precision GPS components. These systems utilize the AQUILA Advanced Monitoring Platform (AMP), to display graphically, via the MMD, shovel grade and drill position to the operator to within ±12 inches of design coordinates. Production prototypes have been installed on a Marion 301 cable shovel and a Bucyrus-Erie49-R Series III drill at the Fording River Mine in August, 1995, at the Wabush Mine on a Bucyrus Erie 190-B shovel in June, 1995, and on a GD120 drill at Gregg River Resources Ltd. in January, 1996. All these systems have undergone field trials to test system components and functionality’s under actual production conditions. This paper will discuss these GPS-based positioning and navigation systems in subsequent sections."
