A mill model structure based on the population mass balance framework incorporating breakage characteristics, slurry and solids transport, product classification and discharge and energy consumption was reported in XXVII IMPC and named the Generic Tumbling Mill Model Structure Version I (GTMMS I). In this work, a new 4D (four dimensional) appearance function sub-model based on the experimental results of the JK Rotary Breakage Tester (JK RBT) was developed to describe the breakage characteristics and was applied to this new model structure. The newly developed 4D appearance function model has fewer fitting parameters and is more generic in nature. Most importantly, it is applicable to both high and low energy impact breakage. It is therefore much more versatile in comparison to the existing JKMRC t10- tn appearance function and the size-dependent JK M-p-q t10-tn appearance function. In addition, the Discrete Element Method (DEM) energy distribution model was integrated into the new model structure. With DEM results providing energy distribution information inside the mill directly, the selection function and the back-calculation method used in the existing JKSimMet modelling method are not needed in this model structure. With the above two revolutionary innovations, the previous model structure was upgraded to the Generic Tumbling Mill Model Structure Version II (GTMMS II). Furthermore, the new model structure is dynamic in nature with time-stepping technique for non-steady-state simulation. A case of the dynamic grinding of a SAG mill was studied to validate the GTMMS II. The model simulation results agreed well with the plant data. With the newly developed 4D appearance function model, the incorporation of DEM energy distribution and transport function, the GTMMS II is an important step forward towards mechanistic modelling of tumbling mills.

"ForewordPart I of this paper, published in the March 1992 issue of the CIM Bulletin, surveyed the probable consequences of a limitation on the emissions of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere for the steel industry. What might be termed the conventional responses to this restriction open to the industry were also surveyed in that section. This section, Part II of the paper, explores a new option - the possibility for the joint production of iron and liquid fuels useful for transportation purposes. In this case, it is shown that it is important to minimize the production of carbon dioxide during the reduction stage to maximize the proportion of the reductant carbon embodied in the fuel. It is also advantageous to conserve hydrogen in the reduction step. In essence, the same carbon fulfills two purposes: it serves as a reductant and fuel for ironmaking and then as a constituent of a liquid fuel. If recovered plastics could be used in ironmaking, the same carbon could serve three useful purposes in turn. The conditions and limitations for the joint use of carbon in such 'cascading' processes are explored below. ABSTRACTIt is becoming increasingly probable that emissions of carbon dioxide from the fossil fuels will have to be reduced to deal with the threat of global warming. This issue is likely to be resolved one way or the other in the period 1995 to 2000 which does not leave much time to develop responsive options. In the intervening period, the policy of the Government of Canada is to stabilize emissions of greenhouse gases at their 1990 level by 2000, by encouraging greater efficiency in the use of energy. Should further reductions prove necessary, economic instruments would probably be employed but these would not be applied before a comprehensive international agreement is reached.There are three main themes in this paper: it is assumed that measures to control carbon dioxide emissions will in fact be necessary by the turn of the century; that there will be a rising need for liquid fuels to supply the world's steadily growing fleet of motor vehicles for many years to come, and that the future niche for Canada's industry in such a carbon-constrained world will be the operation of the energy-intensive industries with efficiency and environmental sensitivity.The steel industry, as a large user of both coal and energy in other forms, would be significantly affected by a need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. This paper first examines what might be called the conventional responses open to the industry in such a situation and then explores a new possibility for making better use of carbon by the co-production of iron and liquid fuels."

Pyrophyllite, an AI silicate used in the production of ceramic materials, is formed mainly by alteration of felsic to intermediate volcanic rocks, either directly (at temperatures of 250-300°C and pressures of 1-2 kbar) or by subsequent low-grade metamorphism of aluminous protoliths produced by thermal fluids or even by prolonged weathering. Most pyrophyllite deposits in North America are concentrated in a belt of Late Precambrian volcanic and sedimentary rocks, the "Avalon Zone ", which extends along the eastern flank of the Appalachian mountain system from Newfoundland to the southeastern U.S.A. The only producing pyrophyllite mine in Canada is an open pit located near the settlement of Foxtrap on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland. It lies in a belt of rhyolitic flows and pyroclastics intruded by a granitoid pluton. The rocks have been leached along a shear- or fracture zone, depleted in silica, alkalies, Ca, Mg and Fe by the action of hydrothermal fluids, and recrystallized to a very fine-grained massive assemblage of pyrophyllite, muscovite ("sericite") and quartz. High-grade pyrophyllite lenses contain small nodules of diaspore with minor barite; rutile is present in trace amounts. The close proximity of all pyrophyllitized zones on the peninsula to the granite contact suggests that the alteration was produced by thermal fluids genetically connected with the granitoid pluton. The fine-grained pyrophyllite-bearing rocks, with their simple mineralogy, are suitable for quantitative modal analysis by X-ray diffraction. Chemically analyzed samples from the alteration zone were used for the construction of working curves by plotting calculated mineral content against the intensity of selected diffraction peaks. The accuracy of the resulting curves is ±4.5% for quartz, ±3.6% for pyrophyllite and ±2.7% for muscovite. Pelletized samples give best results. The XRD method is suitable for a rapid analysis of a large number of grab or core samples to outline higher-grade areas for more detailed sampling.

"Within six months from award of a project management contract, Les Mines Dumagami Limitée, Cadillac, Quebec, was operating its new hoisting facility. This was accomplished with less than a six-week shutdown of mine production while still maintaining shaft access for underground maintenance.The work involved installing a refurbished /3.5 ft diameter double drum hoist, replacing a timber headframe with a newsteel headframe, increasing the ore bin capacity from 500tons to 1000 tons, constructing a new substation, and upgrading related facilities.This paper describes the work and methods used by various contractors, Les Mines Dumagami Limitée and J.S. Redpath Mining Consultants Limited to bring this project to a successful completion. It discusses the history of the project from proposal stage through to the design, procurement, scheduling, and construction management. The paper also comments on problems that were encountered and the methods used to overcome them.IntroductionThe Donald J. Laronde Mine of Les Mines Dumagami Limitée (Dumagarni), a gold and copper producer, is located in northwestern Quebec, approximately half way between Val d'Or and Rouyn. The mine started production in the spring of 1988 and the first gold bar was poured in June 1988.Following a request by Dumagami, on February 22, 1989, J.S. Redpath Mining Consultants Limited(Redpath) delivered a proposal to increase hoisting capabilities from 1500 tpd to a minimum of 2500tpd. Although various concepts were considered, Redpath proposed a new hoist house along the same shaft axis as the existing hoist, and located on the site of the existing substation. They would then provide a new substation, replace the headframe with a largersteel structure , gain extra storage capacities by increasing the bin heights, and raising the roof of the bin house accordingly.Although underground mining would have to be stopped for a month, the mill production would be maintained by feed from Dumagami's open pit.Figure 1 shows the original plant layout and Figure 2 represents the general arrangement after the project was completed . Table 1 compares the original hoisting facilities to the new facilities.On March 2, Dumagami awarded Redpath a contract that included preliminary engineering, detailed engineering, procurement and contract administration, and later added construction management. The preliminary engineering refined the initialconcept, selected major equipment, and prepared schedules and capital cost estimates for the total project."

"The coals of the Sydney and Pictou coalfields are generally classed as high volatile ""A "" and medium volatile bituminous coals but there are significant differences within and even beyond this rank. These are related to the observation that the coalification in eastern Canada is essentially post-deformational, resulting in a general increase of rank with depth in individual seams.Exploration drilling in the Sydney coalfield has shown that the rank increases offshore to M. V. bituminous at mineable depths and in the Pictou field to L. V. bituminous coal. There is also a marked easterly shift in rank within one seam at the same depth at Sydney, with the result that M. V. coal will be reached sooner in the Donkin Reserve area (at 700 m depth) than in the Lingan-No , 26 Reserve area (at 900 m depth). These rank changes are important for the manufacturing of metallurgical coke as shown with coke stability predictions based on petrographic analyses. The L. V. coal of the Pictou field can be used for blending purposes and is the only known L. V. deposit of mineable thickness in eastern Canada.In addition, the vertical rank changes between seams have been studied in ten boreholes. They are not constant within the confines of the Sydney coalfield. Four separate areas can be recognized, each with different coalification gradients, which can be related to changes in the paleogeothermal gradients . Variations of 2.5 degrees to 6. 7 degrees CI IOO m are indicated and geological causes for these changes are suggested.IntroductionThe Sydney coalfield is the largest and most important field in eastern Can ad a, and although it has been in production some 200 years, the remaining ""demonstrated "" resources of 1.6 billion metric tons can extend its production capability for at least another 100 years. All coals mined are high volatile "" A"" bituminous and have been used for both thermal and metallurgical purposes. For the latter rank variations even of a minor scale are of critical importance for the manufacturing of metallurgical coke.The significance at the present time of the Pictou coalfield, which has only modest remaining "" demonstrated"" resources of 60 million metric ton s, lies in the discovery in 1975 of a 14-million-ton deposit of low volatile bituminous coal. It is the only known low-volatile coal in eastern Canada and is suitable for use as a blend for metallurgical coal. As such, it could supply the Sydney coke ovens for a period of 30 years at the current rate o f coke production and replace imported American low volatile coal.Consequently, coal rank studies of the Sydney and Pictou fields are important not only from a geological point of view, but also because of economic considerations."

All indications point to a growing market for thermal coal in Japan as part of the country's current energy policy formulation process. The Ministry of International Trade and Industry forecasts imports of 16 million tons a year in 1985 and 40 million tons in 1990-a twenty-fold and forty-fold increase over the present level. This potential reflects Japan's over-all serious and increasing concern for security of energy supplies and its resultant need to seek alternative sources. Nuclear power will be the main alternative source, but, because it is expected that its development will be slow, imported thermal coal will assume greater importance. Canada, with large resources of all types of coal, could fill a portion of this market. Thermal coal could come from specific thermal coal developments or from metallurgical coal mines, which usually produce a certain amount of coal not amenable to coking, but suitable for power purposes. However, penetration of this Japanese market by Canadian thermal coal will depend on the resolution of a number of problems. On the demand side, siting, environmental aspects, the need for a coal unloading and trans-shipment centre, and the added cost of installing coal-fired stations could be major constraints. Although Canada has ample high-quality resources, any new development tied to the Japanese market will require improvement in prices to cover the high costs associated with transportation, the construction of new mines and the provision of new infrastructure.

This paper presents the results of comparative analysis of effective income-based tax rates for mining in the Northwest Territories (NWT), selected Canadian provinces and international jurisdictions. The study was done as background to a review of royalty regulations for the NWT. ObjectiveThis paper presents results of comparative analysis of effective mining royalty1 rates, and combined effective mining royalty and income tax rates on selected mine models for the Northwest Territories (NWT), with those for several other jurisdictions in Canada and abroad which compete with the NWT for mining investment.BackgroundThe February 27, 1995 federal budget directed the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (DIAND) to proceed with a comprehensive review and amendments to northern natural resource management legislation in order “to increase revenues and ensure a fair return to the Crown.” DIAND is responsible for the administration of the Territorial Lands Act, and its regulations.The Territorial Lands Act gives the Governor-in-Council the authority to “… make regulations for the leasing of mining rights in, under or on territorial lands and the payment of royalties therefor,…”. In the NWT, the Canada Mining Regulations (CMR) provide for the disposition of mineral rights for most minerals, other than coal, petroleum and related hydrocarbons, in return for the payment of a royalty to the Crown.As part of this review of the NWT mining royalty regime, several computer mine models were developed and tax regimes in a number of jurisdictions were analyzed. Effective mining royalty rates, and the combined effective mining royalty and income tax rates were compared across the jurisdictions. The results presented in this paper are a part of the background work done in preparing a discussion paper on proposed changes to the NWT mining royalty that is expected to be released for public consultation in the very near future."

Highwall mining is a highly mechanized coal mining method associated with several advantages, such as a very high production rate (approximately 3,000 t/d) and low production costs. There is no requirement for underground support, ventilation, or blasting. Production leads to added recovery, which is otherwise lost in the ultimate pit. The use of highwall mining can bridge the gap that exists between supply and demand in the energy sector. This paper presents a brief review of highwall mining technology, including current status, analysis tools, and design techniques. In addition, it identifies important parameters from the analysis of failure case studies.

"This paper describes a ventilation project at the Wassa gold mine in Ghana. Golden Star (Wassa) (GSWL), a subsidiary of Golden Star Resources, owns and operates the mine. Golden Star holds a 90% interest in GSWL, while the Ghanaian Government holds the remaining 10% ownership, earning a 5% royalty on the gross revenue of GSWL’s gold production. Construction of the underground mine began in mid-2015 and pre-commercial production started in June 2016. Commercial production from the underground mine was achieved in January 2017. This paper describes the ventilation studies performed to support the initial development and production at the mine. The initial ventilation design included four, parallel surface exhaust fans. Future designs will include booster fans, new primary fans, and additional connections to surface. The paper describes the long-term ventilation planning goals and expectations as the mine achieves a production of 4,000 tpd with truck haulage to surface.INTRODUCTIONThe Wassa Gold Mine is located in the southern portion of the Ashanti Greenstone Gold Belt in Ghana, northwest of Tarkwa as shown in Figure 1. The mine has been in production as an open pit since 1998, with some minor disruptions, but the surface minable reserves have become exhausted and the mine started a transition to an underground operation in 2015. The underground mine was initially developed with twin decline accesses extending from the base of the open pit to the mining areas. The mining method selected was sub-level open stoping with cemented rock backfill. The original production level for the mine was 2,500 tpd with ore and waste transported by trucks hauling in the ramps to surface. In 2017 the production goal was set to increase to approximately 4,000 tpd. This resulted in an increase in the truck haulage fleet in addition to a significant increase in ventilation requirements. This paper describes the ventilation upgrades at the mine as it transitioned from a surface to an underground operation and the adjustments the ventilation system needed to make in order to accommodate a significant increase in production"

"IntroductionThe Bienfait Mine is operated by Bienfait Coal Company Ltd., one of the Luscar Limited group of companies. Situated 5 km southeast of the town of Bienfait, Saskatchewan, it can produce 2.0 million tonnes of lignite annually in addition to 158,000 tonnes of char from a carbonization plant located on the property. Geology The economically mineable coal seams of the Estevan area are found in the Ravenscrag Formation. The lignite-bearing sands, silts and clays were deposited in Early Tertiary age, in an inland sea centred in the Williston Basin of North Dakota. The top of the Ravenscrag is an erosional surface, overlain by Tertiary or Quarternary sands and gravels or glacial till. The regional structure is a gently plunging syncline which dips to the southeast at about 0.3 degrees. There are minor undulations in the Bienfait area which are due to differential subsidence during deposition. Sporadic faulting is probably a result of glacial pressures, and preglacial and glacial channels are responsible for washout zones and the abrupt irregular subcrop found in the area. There are two economic coal seams in the Bienfait area, an uppe; seam locally known as the Roche Percee, and a lower seam, the Estevan. Both seams have been extensively mined since lignite mining began in the area in the late 1800s. The Roche Percee remains only in a small portion of the Bienfait Mine and comprises a very minor portion of the reserves. It averages 1.74 m thick under 8.1 m of overburden. The till rests on top of the Roche Percee and due to weathering the seam is generally of poorer quality. The Estevan seam comprises the majority of reserves at Bienfait. The main seam which is being worked on consists of an upper bench averaging 2.75 m, a carbonaceous parting of 0.21 m, and a lower bench of 0.92 m. Overburden depth above this seam varies from 21.0 m to 38.0 m."

"The new smelting process commenced operation in 1978. The pelletizing and sinter plants were replaced with slurry-fed roasters and the blast furnaces with electric furnaces. The existing converter aisle and matte handling facilities remained unchanged.Process DescriptionNickel-copper concentrate is partially roasted in two slurry-fed fluid bed roasters. After gas cleaning, the sulphur dioxide gas is transferred to the acid plant. The roaster product is conveyed to two electric furnaces for smelting to produce a waste slag and furnace matte. The slag goes to the disposal area and furnace matte containing the metal values is processed in the converters for further removal of iron and sulphur.The final matte containing about 75 per cent metal values is shipped to the refinery in Norway.The commercial smelter was designed for 2135 tonnes per day of concentrate, with an availability of 85% . Roasters and electric furnaces were sized at 117 per cent of design, or 1250 tonnes per day on each of two lines. Concentrate storage capacity in the plant is sufficient for two to three days' plant operation.The new smelting process will be discussed under the following headings:Concentrate Slurry HandlingFeed PreparationRoaster OperationRoaster Gas CleaningCalcine TransferElectric Furnace Operation and Process Control Converting and Matte HandlingUnder these headings, process control , equipment changes, and plant performance after three years' operation is reviewed. "Pressure oxidation (POX) is one of the most common and reliable methods of processing gold-bearing sulfide concentrates. However, when processing concentrates that contain natural carbonaceous matter, substantial gold losses occur due to autoclave preg-robbing. The latter involves formation of gold chloride complexes under typical POX conditions (high temperatures, high acidity and high ORP) and subsequent sorption of these complexes by carbonaceous matter. Naturally, chloride ion plays a significant role in the process of autoclave preg-robbing; its concentration in POX solution has a well-marked effect on subsequent gold recovery during cyanidation of POX residue. The previous research done by SRC Hydrometallurgy showed that autoclave preg-robbing of gold could be significantly inhibited by the addition of mercury(II) compounds to POX slurry. The positive effect of mercury(II) was well pronounced both at high (>20 mg/L) and low (<5 mg/L) Cl concentrations in POX solution. The successful bench-scale laboratory testing was followed by pilot plant trials at Ore Test Facility in Blagoveshchensk, Russia. The present paper provides the results of these trials. The bench-scale testing results were verified; the optimum oxidizing parameters and reagent dosage were specified. The behavior of mercury (II) at POX pilot plant was found to be in good consistency with industrial practice described in the literature.INTRODUCTION Pressure oxidation (POX) is one of the most common, reliable, and commercially proven methods of processing gold-bearing sulfide ores and concentrates. However, when processing double refractory materials that contain natural carbonaceous matter, POX technology advantages are compromised by autoclave preg-robbing of gold. The latter occurs when natural organic carbon and soluble halides are both present in autoclave feed. Strongly oxidizing conditions of POX (high temperature, oxidation-reduction potential or ORP, and acidity) favor formation of gold-halide (mostly, gold-chloride) complexes, which tend to bond with carbonaceous matter. The exact nature and mechanism of this bonding is unknown, but as the result of this, cyanide is unable to leach gold from POX residue and the precious metal is lost to the tails (Axenov et al., 2014; Dimov, Chryssoulis, & Sodhi, 2003; Fomenko, Zaytsev, Pleshkov, Chugaev, & Shneerson, 2013)."

"This paper, an update to the 2003 paper titled "Knowledge, Technology and Profit" (Twigge-Molecey, 2003) analyzes 45 "problem projects" from the mining and metals industry over the last eleven years representing $133 billion in CAPEX. The projects have been designated as "problem projects" as they did not meet their owner’s initial expectations for project performance as defined in the paper. This paper explores some of the challenges that were present, through interviews with the knowledgeable individuals that were familiar with the projects and investigations using publically available information. The aim of the exercise was to identify the key challenges faced by the projects, and the contributing factors that led to the project failures so that the lessons can be applied to future projects.The project challenges have been categorized into four themes, technical, organizational, environmental & social and missing "homework" prior to board approval. Of noteworthy interest is that environmental permitting aspects have risen to become a significant and notable contributor to problem projects in 11 years from 2003 to 2014. It is further observed that many projects have been challenged by increasing size and complexity and with execution in more remote locations since the previous paper.It is a reality that every project will face challenges. Some projects are simply more challenging than others, and success or failure of the project is often determined by whether the project team is fully prepared to respond to the challenges. This in turn is largely dependent on whether the project "homework" was adequately completed and considered for all aspects of the project."

"AbstractA number of plant-scale cyanidation tests were carried out in an attempt to uncover the causes of fluctuations in gold recovery efficiency. Computer analysis of the results verified that the treatment of reclaimed waste rock material along with normal run-of-mine ore was having an adverse effect on metallurgical efficiency. Mineralogical examinations showed that the free gold particles in the dump material were heavily tarnished or coated (predominantly by hydrated iron oxide), accounting for the lower recoveries. The indications were that the effect could be counteracted somewhat by using higher than normal cyanide and lime reagent concentrations and adequate leaching times. Analysis of the results showed further that leach pulp density was an important operating parameter affecting extraction efficiency. A variable activation energy leaching model provided an extremely good characterization of individual batch leach runs.IntroductionFLUCTUATING METALLURGICAL EFFICIENCY at the gold concentrator of the S.A. "The coal industry is an important part of Canada&apos;s economy - as an energy source, employer, and generator of export earnings. Coal comprises 71% of our fossil energy and with rapidly advancing handling and burning technology will clearly play a major role in our national energy mix, eventually as synthetic gases and liquids.International coal markets are very competitive and Canada is disadvantaged by long rail hauls to port, and a heavy tax burden. However, high mine productivity has allowed us to increase our markets.Currently, domestic markets are dominated by coal use for electrical generation, a market with significant growth opportunities.Strong growth is expected in export thermal markets, while metallurgical coal demand is projected to show little or no growth in the medium term. IntroductionThe coal industry is a vital part of the Canadian energy scene .• Coal supplies 17% of Canada&apos;s energy.• On a per capita basis, Albertans use more energy in the form of coal than they do oil and gas.• The value of Canada&apos;s exports of coal last year was equal in value to all the cars we imported from Japan.• Coal is our largest single export to our seco nd largest trading partner, Japan.• The value of coal produced in Canada exceeds the value of any other single mineral produced in thi s country.• In Alberta, the safety record for coal mines is on a par with that of department store clerks.• The coal industry employs about 25% of the total number of people employed in all metal mines in Canada, directly and indirectly accounting for about 50 000 jobs.Coal comprises 71% of Canada&apos; s hydrocarbon energy resources on a crude oil equivalent basis . This is more than double our oil sands resource and dwarfs our conventional crude oil and gas resources (Fig. I). In the short term, coal as a solid fuel plays a significant part in the Canadian energy scene. In the longer term, coal, in the form of electricity and eventually liquids and gases, has a tremendous role to play. In 1986, Canada produced 57.8 million tonnes, slightly down from the record high of 60.8 million tonnes in 1985. Our exports in 1986 were 26.0 million tonnes, a growth of 53% in three years."

"One of the cornerstones of NI43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects is the technical report. The purpose of the report is to provide a summary of the scientific and technical information concerning mineral exploration, development, and production activities on a mineral property that is material to an issuer. The reports must be prepared in accordance with NI43101 and Form 43-101F1 Technical Report and the information must be current as of the date of the filing of the technical report. As these reports provide important information to the investing public, qualified persons preparing these reports should, as much as possible, write in plain, simple language that can be easily read and understood by people who are not geoscientists or engineers. So let’s review some of the common deficiencies with technical reports. Non-current technical report Some of the factors you should consider when determining if your previously filed technical report is still current are as follows: •,Is there new technical information on the property, such as drilling, assays, metallurgical testwork? •,Have you made changes to key assumptions, parameters relating to mineral resources or mineral reserves, or economic analysis? If you have completed the previously recommended work, are your recommendations still current? Similarly, are your report recommendations consistent with what you are telling your shareholders or disclosing in the use of proceeds in your offering documents? For example, if the recommendations in the report consist of further exploration and metallurgical test-work prior to completing a preliminary feasibility study and you have completed the proposed work and are now raising money for a final feasibility study, the report is probably not current."

"The lack of notch ductility in structural steel in general, and in ship plate in particular, has been the object of widespread attention in the metallurgical world since the spectacular collapse of the ill-fated S.S. Schenectady in 1943. Numerous investigations have been carried out, many new tests have been developed, and a vast amount of useful data has been published, with the result that our knowledge is now far more advanced than it was at the time of this disaster. Interest has focused largely on the medium strength steels, and the various factors which cause a normally ductile steel to behave in a brittle manner in the presence of a notch and at relatively .low temperatures have been thoroughly studied.The literature available on high-tensile steels, however, is less extensive and the present paper is intended to supplement this information. Notch toughness tests have been carried out, at the request of the R.C.N., on a high-tensile manganese steel in the form of commercial ship plate. One of the newer tests, the tear test, and the Charpy V-notch impact test, were used to examine the characteristics of plate for the construction of an ice-breaker. About 250 plates, mainly in the thickness range from 11,4 in. to 1 % in., were tested. An an-alysis of the results obtained is presented, certain aspects of the tear test are discussed, and the correlation between the two types of test is studied. On the basis of information available from casualty ships, the plates, with few exceptions, were considered to be satisfactory."

The Peace River iron ore deposit represents the sole source of raw material for an integrated steel industry in Alberta. The ore has proved refractory to beneficiation by a number of techniques. A selective oil-phase agglomeration technique is described. Medium-grade concentrates, analyzing 48-53% Fe and 10-14% SiO2 were obtained with recoveries of about 75% of the total iron. These results appear to represent the optimum possible for this ore body.

"Finance Minister Donald Macdonald's budget of May 25, 1976 featured a restructuring of the anti-inflation profit controls and a grab bag of tax changes, some of direct interest to the mining industry. All Canadian taxpayers now will be permitted to write off immediately 100% of mineral and oil and gas exploration expenses included after• May 25, 1976 and before July 1 1979. The cost of acquitting Canadian resource property after May 6, 197.4 from a federal or provincial government will now clearly be included in Canadian development expense, and provincial drilling and exploration incentives received after May 25, 1976 will not reduce exploration and development expense for federal income tax purposes. Under tough new anti-inflation profit controls, all controlled businesses, except distributions, will essentially have one uniform set of rules for• determining allowable profit margins; this allowable margin will be determined by product line or by over-all net margin and will be 85% of the higher of the margin obtained in the five years preceding October• 13, 1975 or the one year preceding May 1, 1976. The basic capital cost allowance system is to continue, but many rates will be revised. The ability to offset losses created through claiming capital cost allowances on leased equipment, etc. against other income will be ended with respect to transactions entered into a/te1• budget night. Miscellaneous other tax changes will raise the low rate base for Canadian-controlled private corporations to $750,000 increase retitement plan contribution limits and reduce the rate of branch tax imposed on branches of corporations resident in a country with which Canada has a comprehensive tax treaty to equal the withholding tax rate on dividends under that treaty."
