The 1983 Energy Plan calls for an increase in North Island coal production from both underground and opencast sources from the 1982/1983 production of 843 000 tpa to approximately 3.4 Mtpa within the ten year period to March 1993. This increased production is scheduled to come from the following sources: Huntly West No 1 underground mine reaching full production of 1.26 Mtpa. Huntly East underground mine increasing production to 750 000 tpa. The proposed new Huntly West No 2 mine producing 100 000 tpa in its first year of operation û 1992. The proposed Ohinewai opencast producing 920 000 tpa for supply to the steelmaking plant at Glenbrook, replacing Weavers opencast which will be worked out in 1990. Rotowaro opencast producing at 220 000 tpa (currently being achieved). Two additional sources of supply which are not scheduled to begin production for at least ten years, and both of which have been designated for coal fired thermal power generation, are the Maramarua and Mokau coalfields. It was originally envisaged that development of both coalfields would be a combination of underground and opencast mines. The form of development is yet to be confirmed by detailed feasibility studies. The location of the Maramarua, Ohinewai (Waikare Coalfield) and Mokau deposits is shown on Figure 1. Worley Consultants Limited, in conjunction with their partners Rheinbraun Consulting GmbH (Germany) and Longworth McKenzie Pty Limited (Australia) have been involved with investigations and mining assessments for the Maramarua, Mokau and Ohinewai prospects. The Maramarua and Mokau studies form part of the New Zealand Coal Resources Survey programme of updating information to the Pre-Feasibility Mining Assessment level before proceeding to detailed feasibility studies. The Ohinewai study was commissioned directly by Mines Division to investigate the feasibility of mining coal by 1989 before reserves at Weavers opencast are depleted. This paper describes typical studies which are now being commissioned by Mines Division to investigate large-scale mining development and the effect geotechnical-conditions may have on coal recovery. The magnitude of these projects is reflected in the proposed outputs û up to2 Mtpa from individual mines û and the introduction of new continuous mining systems for both underground and opencast mines on a scale which has not previously been contemplated.

Stowing has been successfully used in many countries as a means of controlling surface subsidence, minimi ing incidences of spontaneous combustion, maintaining gate road stability and maximising coal recovery.Australian experience in stowing is limited but in the future increased extraction of thicker and/or multiple seams by longwall operations and resolution of conflict of alternative land u'ses may necessitate the use of stowing in coal mining. At present there is little incentive for mining companies to introduce and operate a stowing system because costs have to be borne by the individual companies and benefits spill over to society and the State. Cost sharing by the industry and State incentives may overcome the problem of cost disincentive.

Project cost control procedures and computer systems have enjoyed a successful and simple relationship over the past decade, thanks primarily to the proliferation of portable computers or PC's. Prior to the introduction of this technology, project control was largely a manual and somewhat onerous task of historical data compilations, with little time available for dynamic forecasting, staged planning, or pre-emptive cost control. Automated systems developed during this era were resident on "Heavy Iron" or mainframe computers and were expensive to maintain and operate. Use of these early systems was limited to large engineering, construction, and industrial concerns with the economies of scale and funding required for their successful application. Systems were either designed for critical path analysis or task scheduling, but rarely integrated with the other, much less cost control.

Concentrations of bright green material in the "Golden Mile" of Kalgoorlie, which carry particularly high gold values, are known locally as "green leader".This assemblage consists largely of quartz, sericitic muscovite, carbonates, and pyrite. Some of the sericitic muscovite contains vanadium, giving the rock its green colour. Vanadium oxides, including nolanite, are also present. Tellurides identified in this study are calaverite, altaite, petzite, melonite, and coloradoite. Native gold was found in most of the samples; some of the gold, at least, has been formed from the decomposition of gold tellurides.It is suggested that mineralizing solutions carrying gold and tellurium leached vanadium from the host rocks and subsequently deposited gold tellurides and vanadium-bearing minerals in the "green leader".

GOOD ventilation is recognized as an essential for the preservation of health, and laws have accordingly been framed in many countries for the provision of adequate ventilation in factories and places of public resort as well as in mines.Apart from the legislative enforcement of hygienic measures as a matter of public 'policy, the ventilation of mines has an important economic aspect, since it affects to a large extent the industrial efficiency of the workmen, and consequently the cost of mineral production. Until recent years the ventilation of metal mines has not generally received much consideration, and the importance of pure air has been sometimes overlooked. To the absence of explosive gases in such mines, and to the cost of the installation and working of mechanical ventilators, may generally be attributed disregard of adequate ventilation. For tax purposes a mining company is a New Zealand company whose principal source of income is from the business of mining, or exploring for certain specified minerals in New Zealand. New Zealand tax law distinguishes between a non-resident mining operator and a mining company, with the only major difference in tax treatment being the corporate tax rates. New Zealand mining companies are taxed at 28 per cent, whereas non-resident mining operators are taxed at 33 per cent of taxable income. These provisions also apply to the petroleum mining industry. Individuals who carry on the business of mining are also specifically defined in the Act. They are termed as 'resident mining operators'. Non-resident mining operators are non-residents of New Zealand who carry on mining ventures as a business in New Zealand. Mining ventures are defined as the exploring, searching and mining of specified minerals, including development work carried out for profits. Similar provisions apply to the petroleum mining sector. Specified minerals are defined in the Income Tax Act 1976 ('the Act') and while no useful purpose is obtained by listing them in the paper, they include a larger number of industrial and commercial minerals. The Minister of Finance is also empowered to add to the list by publishing his determination in the Gazette.

Evaluation of Grinding Medium Wear in Stirred Mills The standard fine grinding machines in the minerals industry are stirred mills whose performance largely depends on the competency of the grinding medium. Medium wear in stirred mills is one of the key parameters for medium selection. A wear evaluation methodology is developed and applied in this paper to measure the wear rate of river sand using a laboratory batch stirred mill. The procedure is demonstrated by testing the sand medium in a 0.55 kW batch stirred media detritor (SMD). The sand wear rate determined in the laboratory batch mill is successfully scaled up to that determined on a full-scale Metso 355 kW SMD mill.

As part of a continuing study of mechanisms of breakage, the grinding at Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd. was traced by the addition of barytes and the results compared with parallel small scale laboratory tests. It was confirmed that the same basic mathematical functions described the behaviour of the full scale ball mill as those established in the small scale mill. However, an additional classification function was required to define the behaviour for the rod mill and was evaluated as a function of size from the experimental data. The classification and grinding of the pyrites ore was assessed from steady state size distributions around the circuit.

The following paper describes the refining practice for the production of lead, silver and gold at the works of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd., Port Pirie, South Australia.The refinery is situated on the wharf frontage and is built parallel with it. The refinery occupies an area of approximately 3380 square yards. (Fig. 8)There are two buildings, one containing the softening and de-silverising sections, measuring 225 ft. x 57t ft., while the other building, which measures 225 ft. x 90 ft. covers the de-zincing, lead moulding, retorting, cupellation, and dore parting sections. (Fig. 1)The retorting, cupellation, and dore parting sections are completely isolated from the rest of the plant by strong small-mesh wire gratings welded to steel uprights. The dore parting plant and generator room are further isolated by a brick wall, built up to the roof. The two main buildings are steel structures, with outer walls and roof of "Robertson" corrugated sheeting; the side and end walls are open for some distance above the ground, and this, coupled with the high roof which is 50 ft. from ground level, ensures the free access of air and light. Conditions are such that operators work in a clear atmosphere.

THERE are certain facts that the mining industry in Australia is faced with at the present moment which may be accepted as axioms. The industry is at a low ebb, as evidenced by statistics. Metals form the basis of all modern industries, and are necessaryfor the welfare of Australia. Mining is a wasting asset. Every ton of ore extracted is one ton less which c.annot be made good, and it should be our duty to get as much profit froin that ore as possible, otherwise there is a permanent loss to the country.The metal market cannot be controlled by Australia; it is more or less an international matter. Australia has not been thoroughly prospected. There are no mines being developed that are likely to replace those which are being depleted.Our mining engineers are as capable as those in other parts of the world, and have made good where they have been given a chance. There is no one cause for the present depression; there are several, more or less, interwoven. Of course, the war has had an adverse effect, but that has only dislocated things temporarily; it upset our markets, influenced the price of metals, and affected the labour market and cost of stores. Labour troubles made their appearance before the wave of unrest swept over the world. The cause of labour discontent must be investigated, and if possible removed. As each industry has .its·own problems, miners must inquire into their special problems, as there is no sovereign remedy that will suit all cases.It is obvious that we cannot mine ore if we do not know where it is; therefore, the first thing is to discover workable deposits.

In addressing the need for non-degree tertiary training, let us examine some recent reviews of engineering and geoscience education. The Finniston Report (1) criticised the formation of engineers in the UK and stated that this was largely due to the narrow British conception of engineering as a branch of applied science which militates against an effective marriage between theory and application. It also criticised the system for not giving students sufficient grounding in the synthesis of technical, human and financial considerations within their undergraduate courses. As we all know, this report has led to the restructuring of engineering education in the UK. More recently, a Review of the Discipline of Engineering was carried out in Australia by a committee chaired by Professor Sir Bruce Williams (2). The report stated that: Australia has a fairly good system of engineering education that should be made better. more should be done to develop the communication skills of both staff and students. more attention should be paid to changes in engineering practice and the human element in technology. there is a serious shortage of state of the art equipment in most engineering schools. female enrolments in engineering courses should be increased from the current level of about 7% to 20% by 1997. employers should develop a better understanding of the need for continuing education. staff in engineering schools should develop closer relations with employers of engineers. higher education institutions with engineering schools should give financial and other inducements to staff to increase the proportion of study leave or professional development leave spent working as engineers in the business sector. there is considerable room for improvements in the teaching process and in the development of evaluation schemes for assessing the teaching contributions of staff. In its recent report to the Council of the Institution of Engineers, Australia, the Task Force on Engineering Education(3) makes the following points: managerial, entrepreneurial, professional and interpersonal skills should be introduced and integrated into the undergraduate courses but studied in depth as part of continuing education. the continuing education policy of the Institution should be promoted and strengthened with all engineers required to pursue continuing education. the Institution should develop a comprehensive guide to continuing education available from universities, colleges and other public and private sector organisations.

CENTRAL mine ore consists mainly of galena and marmatite in a siliceous and rhodonitic gangue, the average assay values being approximately 11.5 oz. per ton Ag, 14.5% Pb, 14.5% Zn, 1.3% Ox Pb, 0.3% Ox Zn.Owing to the 1923 fire in the underground workings, much of the ore now being mined has been subjected to a certain amount of oxidation, as shown by the oxidised values above.This factor is of great importance from a flotation point of view, as a sulphide surface which has been subjected to the influence of oxidation is not as amenable to flotation concentration as a fresh sulphide surface. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) have been used for more than 20 years to grind iron ore pellet feed. Besides coarse comminution (crushing), where HPGR are installed upstream of the ball mill, there are numerous flow sheets where HPGR are used after ball milling and dewatering for re- or finish grinding.There is a clear growing interest in grinding of pellet feed with HPGR during the last few years. In addition to their known advantages of low specific energy consumption, high availability, low steel consumption and improved pelletising processes the lower environmental load (reduced or no water consumption) became a strong driving factor for the application of HPGR in pellet feed grinding.This growing demand increases the interest in better understanding of the HPGR grinding process with fine iron ore concentrates. One of the most important process parameters is the moisture content of the feed material which influences the performance of the HPGR enormously. The HPGR can react to fluctuations of the fresh feed properties to a certain degree by adjusting grinding force and roller speed. Nevertheless, there are limitations by the physics of the compression process and the capability of water absorption by the concentrate. The capability varies for different concentrates and different specific surface areas. The increasing pace of modern mining makes constantly greater demands upon the several contributing departments of rock breaking and transport, and rock-drilling, as the spearhead of attack, has received a great deal of attention with respect to both machines and steels. By a series of mechanical improvements, combined with the application of selected heat-treated alloy steels, the rock-drill has now been developed into a machine capable of rapid drilling and long service under severe working conditions. As a factoryproduct made under strict metallurgical control it is as foolproof as, say, the modern automobile, and, like its prototype, it can be kept in efficient operation by a minor amount of attention during use and by periodical adjustments and replacements.The same cannot be said, unfortunately, of the drills with which the machine is supplied; in conventional mine-shop practice these are made of the best tool steel shaped and heat-treated under the poorest of metallurgical conditions.The crudities of steel-shop practice have, in fact, always prevented the full exploitation of the steels available at any time, and even at the present day the general standard of treatment offers a contrast with the quality of the steels which moves the metallurgist to amusement, despondency or outrage, according to his temperament. Nevertheless, the tendency persists to meet the increasing demands of the rock-drill primarily by the use of still better steels, and secondarily by improvement, of the steel-shop practice. Athird type of development is the introduction of factorymade tools in the form of detachable bits and rods. A commonplace, sometimes overlooked or taken for granted, article of everyday existence is the tin can. Produced from thin gauge low carbon steel, and commonly coated with a mere 60 millionths of an inch of pure tin, the product is however strong and corrosion resistant. Tin-plate serves a myriad of purposes-the most important being to meet the requirements of the canning industry. Australia's newest steel product, tin-plate, was first produced on a commercial scale during the early part of August, 1957. The commissioning of the Hot Dip Tinning Plant (Fig. 1) of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. at Port Kembla, marked the culmination of a proposal dating back to 1939, the advent of World War II having caused its deferment to the present time.Cornish tin is known to have been exported as early as 300 B.C. to Syria and tinned vessels existed even in the year A.D. 23. The tin coating of plate could be described as an ancient art, believed to have had its origin in Bohemia in the thirteenth century. During the next 450 years, the process spread through Saxony to Pontypool in Monmouthshire, but it was a further half century before any measure of success was obtained.Perhaps the two greatest milestones in tin-plate manufacture were the rolling of iron plates first carried out in 1728, thereby outmoding the hammer formed sheet, and more recently, the development of the electro-deposition process. Demonstration of Solid-Liquid Separations Using Recycled Supernatant that Contains Temperature-Responsive Polymer The effective use of recycled supernatant that contains temperature-responsive flocculant is demonstrated for solid-liquid separations. The recyclability of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) of several different molecular weights and a 15 per cent negatively charged derivative are compared. Batch settling tests of a-alumina suspensions are first conducted at 50¦C, with a subsequent 25¦C period, after which the supernatant is harvested and used to flocculate subsequent suspensions. Using this procedure consecutive separations are obtained with the repeated recycling of uncharged PNIPAM containing supernatant. Batch settling tests indicate that hindered settling rates increase with molecular weight of PNIPAM. Adsorption studies indicate that strong adsorption of PNIPAM onto alumina occurs with PNIPAM at 50¦C and that significant desorption occurs after cooling at 25¦C. However, the extent of desorption decreases with molecular weight resulting in low amounts of PNIPAM for recycling and poor settling behaviour when high molecular weight PNIPAM is recycled. Little recyclability was evident using the negatively charged PNIPAM. On the basis of these findings a recycling-thickener apparatus that uses low molecular weight uncharged PNIPAM is proposed.

The last one decade in India had witnessed phenomenal growth in the coal, lignite, iron ore, limestone and many other minerals. To meet the production of minerals, the energy requirement is also very high both in terms of petroleum products and electrical energy. Because of spiralling prices of crude oil and also of the electrical energy, attempts have been made by various mining companies to select energy efficient mining machineries (in underground and surface) mines, together with energy efficient mining and mineral processing operations. Mineral sector of India is working seriously in tune with the Planning Commission stipulations to conserve energy.Apart from energy use (both electrical and fossil fuels) in mining, it is also significantly contributing to the cost of mineral processing depending on the quality of ore/rock being processed. Over the years a number of studies have been initiated and implemented to reduce cost of energy bill. An attempt has been made to present the various aspects of energy conservation, Impact of Energy Conservation Act 2001, Relevance of energy audit, areas of energy consumption and conservation efforts, etc in this paper. The paper also deals with some of the case studies to show how energy conservation programs has been implemented in the Indian mineral sector.

In 2012, a single module heavy medium cyclone plant (HMP) was installed at the Glencore Zinc’s (then Xstrata Zinc) McArthur River lead zinc mine. The HMP formed the first part of the MRM Phase 3 Project to increase run of mine (ROM) capacity from 2.4 to 5.5 Mt/a.The purpose of the HMP is to remove liberated gangue from the crusher product at minimal loss of valuable mineral. The McArthur ores are very finely disseminated requiring a fine primary grind size prior to rougher flotation. Rejecting waste prior to grinding therefore offers significant power and grinding media savings. The plant was designed to treat only those ores with a reasonable upgrade ratio at the target zinc recovery across the HMP of 95%.On this basis, a 1.8 Mt/a single module plant was built based on 250 t/h feed rate and 82% availability. In contrast to existing base metal heavy medium plants in Australia, the MRM Flow sheet utilised the principles in modern coal heavy medium cyclone plant design. Since commissioning, the plant feed rate has been significantly increased and is now normally operated up to 540 t/h (dry basis).Although this throughput increase is partially due to debottlenecking work, it is also attributable to the conservative design parameters for base metal heavy medium cyclone circuits in comparison to those used in equivalent coal circuits.This paper discusses Flow sheet design and compares traditional base metal design parameters with those achieved at MRM and those of modern coal plants. It provides information on plant capital and operating costs and the net savings realised by its installation. In November, 1932, an investigation of silicosis was undertaken at the, McIntyre Porcupine Mine, Schumacher, Ont., atfer a discussion of the problem with Sir Frederick Banting and his, staff. As a result it was decided to carry on dusting experiments with animals at the mine in a manner that would duplicate as far as possible actual industrial conditions.At that time 50, guinea pigs were placed in the crusher nouse tunnel of the mill where a considerable quantity of fine dust, containing approximately 35 per cent., of free silica, was being constantly produced. These animals lived in this atmosphere for periods up to one year, and, while on autopsy large amounts of dust were found in the lungs, not a single case of silicosis had developed. These negative results suggested, among other things, that the mine gases might be a predisposing factor in the production of silicosis, and the results of this investigation led us to undertake the study of the hydrogen-ion concentration of the condensate of the atmosphere, both in the mine and in various sections of the mill.The C02 combining power of blood serum on a series of 400 miners was also studied at this time. While these results were inconclusive, the variation in the hydrogen-ion concentration of the condensate between the surface and underground atmospheres encouraged us to investigate the effect of neutral, weak acid and alkaline solutions on the solubility of silicious materials. Gye and Purdy were the first to point out that the chemical reaction and not the physical presence of silicious material was responsible for the production of the fibrosis in silicosis. This work was investigated by Gardner and Cummings who showed that the tissue reaction to quartz was definitely proportional to the size of the particle. They found that 1-3 micron particles of quartz produced an acute proliferative fibrotic response while the 10-12 micron particles produced only a foreign body reaction up to a period of three years. It is accepted that the dangerous silica particles retained by the lung are under 5 microns in diameter. We assumed that if the solubility of the silicious material retained in the lung could be reduced sufficiently by the addition of some non-toxic element or compound the usual fibrotic respohse would be modified. We found that the addition of certain compounds to silica would reduce its solubility in the beaker to a slight extent. But these compounds, when mixed with quartz...
