The Mesozoic iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) mineralisation in southern Perú and the northern Chile coastal IOCG belt have emerged as two of the major exploration targets in the Central Andes in the last two decades. These Mesozoic Andean IOCG deposits formed in two mineralisation epochs, the Middle-Late Jurassic (170–150 Ma) and Early Cretaceous (130–110 Ma), with the major Cu-rich IOCG deposits located in the Early Cretaceous mineralisation belt. The early studies in some IOCG centres support a magmtic-hydrothermal model for both Cu-rich IOCG deposits and broadly contemporaneous Cu-poor ‘Kiruna-type’ magnetite deposits. However, recent evidence from field, geochronology, fluid inclusions and stable isotopes show that in the major Central Andean deposits (eg Raúl-Condestable, Mina Justa in southern Perú, La Candelaria-Punta del Cobre and Mantoverde in northern Chile), the incursion of evaporite-sourced basinal brines or sea water may be a prerequisite for economic Cu mineralisation. Moreover, the Cu-poor massive magnetite deposits could be interpreted as a product from iron oxide melt, with minimal intervention by non-magmatic fluids. Therefore, they could represent two contrasted deposit types and contain little genetic relationships. The different roles of magmatism during the Mesozoic are responsible for the variable mineralisation in the Central Andes, including IOCG, magnetite and ‘manto-type’ deposits. Located at the southern end of the Awhitu Peninsula, the Waikato North Head ironsand mine is approximately 50 km southwest of Auckland . The ironsand deposit consists of Quaternary sands, clays and peats, formed by aeolian and marine processes. We sampled on widely- and closely-spaced intervals to test variability within the mining area. X-Ray powder diffraction shows that samples contain feldspars, quartz, pyroxenes, amphiboles, clays and titanomagnetite. Densities range from 1.6 to 2.5 grams/cubic centimetre, with porosities from 30 to 43 percent. The percentage of magnetic minerals values range from 0 to 75 percent, slimes (clay minerals) values of 0 to 26 percent and non-magnetic minerals from 20 to 95 percent. Mineralogical differences in the Mitiwai Formation and Waiuku Blacksand Member cause bimodal populations in the density, magnetic minerals, nonmagnetic minerals and slimes plots. The Mitiwai Formation has higher non-magnetic mineral values and lower density, slimes and magnetic mineral values than the Waiuku Blacksand Member.

The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences is undertaking a mineral resource assessment study of the Coromandel region, due for completion in July 2000. A key part of the study is the assembly of a geographic information system (GIS), a computerised tool for layering, analysing and presenting spatial information. The GIS is being assembled with ArcInfo/ArcView software and to date includes layers for a digital terrain model, an aeromagnetic map (open file mining company data), a geological map (from the QMAP project), areas of hydrothermal alteration, locations of mineral deposits (GERM database), stream sediment geochemical analyses (REGCHEM database), and a lineament map derived from satellite remote sensing data.

Some crystal chemical properties of several apatites from Brazilian deposits and occurrences were determined; the samples had different origins (igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary). The aim was to establish relationships to their froth flotabilities behaviour. Detailed X-ray diffraction studies were carried out, to determine precisely the unit cell parameters and the degrees of crystallinity of the apatite samples. A thorough chemical analysis of these minerals was also conducted. Microflotation studies were carried out, using sodium oleate and dodecylammonium chloride as collectors. The crystallinity levels were determined for all samples studied, with the establishment of a crystallinity index, which varied from 10.0 to 4.5, on a normalised scale. A marked dependence was observed between this crystallinity sequence and flotability; for both collectors, flotability dropped drastically for crystallinity indices lower than 8.0. Also, the low crystallinity apatites showed a decrease in floatability, for longer conditioning times.

High concentrations of airborne coal particles is the main reason leading to health and safety hazards in underground coalmines. Water spray is one of the effective methods to suppress coal particles in mine sites, but the use of plain water is not effective enough to capture coal particles. By adding surfactants, coal wettability can be improved which will increase the coal dust suppression efficiency. In this study, a modified sink test was employed to evaluate coal wettability in the presence of two anionic surfactants: sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). Sink rates were calculated by measuring sink weight over test time. Different surfactant concentrations (0.01 per cent, 0.05 per cent, 0.1 per cent, 0.2 per cent and 0.4 per cent) and two types of water (tap water and deionised water) were selected to investigate coal wettability over three size ranges (0–38, 53–75 and 75–90 µm). The results show that both SDS and SDBS surfactants can lower the water surface tension and improve coal wetting performance. Sink rates increased as the surfactant concentration increased, and surfactant solutions prepared by tap water performed better than deionised water in enhancing coal wettability. Also, coal wettability varied for different coal particle sizes; the smaller coal particles were, the worse the wettability they possessed.CITATION:Chen, Y, Xu, G, Wang, R and Albijanic, B, 2017. A commercial scale strong acid leaching plant was commissioned at the Risdon plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, a member of the Pasminco group of companies, in February 1988. It was designed to upgrade the lead/silver residue product from 26% to 37% lead, thus improving the realised value and increasing overall zinc recovery. This in turn enables the lead smelter treating the lead residue to improve its productivity. The equipment consists of two 250m3 bricklined leach tanks and two 6.5m diameter stainless steel high rate thickeners operating with counter current washing at 95¦C and 120 g/L H2SO4. The present filtration and drying equipment is also being replaced. Two 35m2 squeeze action filter presses equipped with horizontal plates are being installed, together with ancillary drying equipment to ensure that the final product complies with the transportable moisture limit. The new filtration plant is due to be commissioned in mid-1989.

Laboratory-scale studies aimed at developing a process for solubilising manganese values from a low grade pyrolusite containing material using low grade pyrite, both available in India, are described. Leaching 21 parts by mole of pyrolusite with 6 and 26 parts by mole of pyrite and sulphuric acid respectively results in good manganese dissolution (98 per cent) at 100°C within one hour. The probable kinetics of the leaching process has also been given.

There is currently a worldwide interest in coal-oil technology as the search continues for alternative energy sources to reduce the consumption of petroleum crude. An important aspect of this coal-oil technology study is to obtain information on the flow properties of coal-oil slurries. While some work has been reported on the flow behaviour of black coal-oil suspensions, very little work on brown coal-oil suspensions has been reported. In this paper flow characteristics of brown coal-oil suspensions for various coal concentration and temperatures have been presented. A capillary rheometer, designed to handle settling suspension, has been used for determining rheological properties. Brown coal of 0.0725 mm average particle diameter has been used in this work. The oil was a coal derived product having a boiling point range of 234¦C - 319¦C. Apparent viscosity of all suspensions was found to increase on storage due to ageing. Ageing might have occurred due to physicochemical interactions between coal and oil. Flow behaviour of some suspensions changed from Newtonian to non-Newtonian on storage. Apparent viscosity increased sharply with increase in solids concentration and suspensions at higher concentration behaved as non Newtonian liquids. Viscosity decreased with increase in temperature; rate of decrease slowed down with increase in temperature.

The resource industry must prepare for the inevitable shift towards automation as an operational objective. Although this may seem like a distant concern, many mining companies and equipment manufacturers are already conducting full-scale automation trials. The necessary technology is advancing at a rapid pace yet the training of people to support it at the trade level lags far behind. Those given the responsibility of installing and maintaining automated equipment in the mining environment require a unique set of skills and knowledge. These training needs demand attention to ensure that the wider uptake of automation is sustainable and achieves its full potential.   This paper documents work undertaken by CRCMining and the Mining Industry Skills Centre towards establishing a training framework seeking to address the needs of trade level personnel tasked with the support of automation equipment. A comprehensive definition of the skills and knowledge required by the hypothetical automation-specialised tradesperson is presented. The training pathway identified for these personnel is also described. This work forms part of the Mining Industry Skills Centre's Automation Skills Formation Strategy, funded by the Queensland Department of Education and Training.

The application of microwave energy as a substitute for conventional heating has drawn interest from many researchers in extractive metallurgy. Microwaves have a heating effect just as many other forms of radiant energy. Microwaves are able to penetrate the substance at which they are directed and in being absorbed heat the material from the inside. As a result of heat generated in the interior of a particle, microwaves can affect the rupture of a particle (in this case a host ore) and break down the matrix of the particle (host ore) and expose the recoverable mineral to the leaching reagent. Two series of leaching experiments were carried out at temperatures above 90????C using a conventional heater (hot plate) and a modified 850 W, 2.45 Ghz microwave oven. One series of tests was carried out at ambient temperature. A pyritic/arsenopyritic gold concentrate was leached with 3.3 kg/t to 6.8 kg/t NaCN for two hours. The extraction of gold at 6.8 kg/t NaCN was higher in microwave assisted leaching (59 per cent) than the extraction obtained in leaching at conventional heating (39 per cent) and ambient temperature (28 per cent). Extraction of gold was dependent on the size fraction used and was 48 per cent for û75 ¦m, 43 per cent for û90+75 ¦m and 37 per cent for û150 + 90 ¦m size ranges.

Cretaceous to Cenozoic sedimentary basins in Western Southland include a wide range of non-marine and marine sediments, in a structurally complex setting dominated by major fault systems. A reassessment of their mineral potential confirms large quantities of nonmetallic minerals (limestone, aggregate, marl), and smaller reserves of bituminous coal, lignite, clays, and oil shale. Hydrocarbon potential is largely untested. Metallic minerals are present in trace amounts, apart from platinum group minerals and some detrital gold. In the offshore area, seismic data suggest the hydrocarbon potential is significant. The Orepuki area has the most interest onshore.

There has been a strong trend over the past decade in hard rock mines towards the use of very high powered auxiliary (or secondary) fans; in many mines, the installed power for the secondary ventilation system now exceeds that of the primary ventilation system. This also reflects the trend to use two-stage auxiliary fans pushing air into a single ‘trunk’ duct that in turn splits into multiple branches with multiple outlets feeding multiple workplaces. This often produces a poor result in terms of face flows due to the high resistance, high leakage and badly managed duct outlets, as well as high fan capital and operating (power) costs, which in turn also results in a higher cost for the underground power reticulation/distribution systems. This paper explores the reasons why this trend exists and what ventilation practitioners can do to utilise less expensive systems that simultaneously deliver better workplace conditions. The Onemana prospect is located on the eastern Coromandel Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand. Systematic exploration involving surface geological mapping, geophysics, rock and soil geochemistry, reverse-circulation and diamond drilling has identified a number of important features of a fossil hydrothermal system at Onemana. This relatively intact gold mineralised system is hosted within a sequence of rhyolitic volcanics and volcaniclastics, overlain by lake sediments, sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccia. The system lies within a graben/half graben bounded by major NE-trending faults which form the approximate boundaries to hydrothermal alteration. Rock and soil geochemistry indicate a broad zone of anomalous gold, silver, arsenic, mercury and antimony. Overlapping elevated rock and soil gold anomalies indicate strongest mineralisation occurs over two zones of hydrothermal brecciation named 'Breccia Knob' and 'Western Ridge'. Geophysical data obtained from Gradient Array Resistivity and Ground Magnetics have been used to produce anomaly maps. The terrain corrected resistivity plot shows a number of well defined linear resistivity anomalies which are believed to represent large silicified and quartz veined bodies at relatively shallow depths. The strongest of these anomalies correspond with 'Breccia Knob' and 'Western Ridge'. Reverse-circulation and diamond drilling targeting these resistivity and geochemical anomalies has confirmed wide intervals of quartz veining, silicification and gold mineralisation. Petrologic data based on drill samples indicates the existence of a laterally extensive gold bearing epithermal system. Hydrothermal alteration is thought to have been caused by strongly convecting, two-phase (boiling), near-neutral chloride fluids which persisted at high temperatures (170 - 220¦C) to the paleosurface. A geological model is postulated of a large, complex, hydrothermal system developed in a shallow lake or marginal lake environment created by rifting and graben development within a recently extinct rhyolitic volcanic centre. Geothermal activity alternated between relatively quiescent periods of unrestricted fluid upflow and sinter development interspersed with violent hydrothermal eruptions caused by near surface silica capping and overpressuring above a major fluid conduit centred under 'Breccia Knob'.  Opportunities for precious metal mineralisation are evident from drilling to date. Upflow of near-neutral chloride fluids to shallow depths favours the presence of strongly mineralised stockworks at relatively shallow depths. Periodic hydrothermal eruptions would have caused fracturing and rapid depressurisation of the hydrothermal system, strongly favouring the precipitation of gold from solution both near surface and within feeder-vein systems at depth.

An open cast mine on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand proposes to remove up to 30 m of overburden to access an ore body neighbouring National Reserve land. Part of the conditions of the mining permit is that no material above natural discharge levels may be released over the Mining Lease boundary onto the adjacent land. In order to meet this requirement, the client has contracted the design and installation of over 2.6 km of high energy dynamic rockfall control barriers. This paper describes how the rockfall hazards were assessed and the rockfall barriers dimensioned. The design involved 2D modelling of over 3000 simulations.   Modelling parameters were calibrated during field trials at a purpose built section of barrier. The resultant energies ranged from 500 to 3000 kJ. The construction phase of the project involved the drilling, anchoring, and installation of certified barriers up to 7 m high in a remote and inhospitable climate with limited machinery access. By exploring best practice in this specialized field of engineering, a novel rockfall hazard mitigation solution was identified.
