A key issue in maintaining the mining industryÆs social contract to access community-owned resources, is the need to be able to demonstrate professional management of resource extraction and the risk associated with mining hazards. Significant failures such as disease relating to coal dust and asbestos and mine disasters such as Moura, Appin and Gretley have resulted in judicial and legislative interventions that respond to the community outcry but do not necessarily effectively manage the longer term risk in a sector driven by new technology. With the implementation of recent amendments to the Queensland Professional Engineers Act, senior engineers in all industries including the mining industry are required to be registered and to demonstrate that they have æmaintained competency in the practice of engineering in the area of engineering for which the (engineer) is ... registeredÆ. This may be facilitated through a report produced by an æAssessing EntityÆ. These entities are approved by the Minister on advice from the Board of Professional Engineers, Queensland. Engineers Australia and The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (The AusIMM) are the two professional bodies approved as æassessing entitiesÆ charged with facilitating successful implementation of the process established by the legislation. The scope of the legislation covers engineering enterprises in Queensland and engineering activities elsewhere that may have been designed in Queensland. There is currently a challenge to determine what the necessary health and safety competencies for the mining industry are and how the maintenance of these competencies will be assessed. The different approaches taken by the two assessing entities are compared and contrasted. At the legislative level, establishing an obligation to assess professional competency is simple, but at the level of the profession, it is new ground that warrants a substantial research and development input. The challenge is to develop criteria by which the quality of such system can be assessed. The comparison is made by considering such issues as equity, effectiveness, efficiency, objectiveness and transparency. These five indicators are considered in terms of how they are applied in other sectors and how they might be applied in the mining sector.

Telfer Gold Mine combines a world-class gold and copper resource and longevity of operation as a major gold and copper producer. Telfer Gold Mine has undergone a series of transformations since mining commenced as a high-grade narrow-vein oxide open pit operation in 1977. In 1986, the open pit operation converted from a narrow-vein, high-grade operation, to a low-grade high-volume oxide mining operation utilising dump leach processing technology. Mechanised underground mining of the high-grade narrow-veins commenced in 1990. Total recovered gold production between 1977 to 1999 has totalled 5.7 million ounces. The Telfer Extension Project consists of two pre-feasibility studies, the Surface Extension Project (SEP) and the I-Series Project (ISP). The combined studies represent one of the more significant resource evaluations undertaken in the gold industry in recent times. Geological activities for the SEP pre-feasibility study have included the drill definition of a large low-grade resource within an area of 25 km2 . The surface drilling program has completed 15 000 metres of HQ3 diamond drilling and over 30 000 metres of RC between last quarter of 1998 and late-1999. The ISP pre-feasibility study is currently evaluating the resource potential of both a high-grade low-volume and a lower grade bulk mining scenario, 800 m to 1200 m below the surface of Main Dome. 15 000 metres of underground diamond drilling have been completed between last quarter of 1998 and August 1999 as part of this study. Systems and cultures have been developed to maximise safety, monitor the quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) on all aspects of the operation, and minimise impact on the environment. All data are stored in database systems, specifically designed for Telfer operations. 3D geostatistical resource estimation using ordinary kriging has been carried out for over 220 geological domains within the 25 km3 of mineralised system. Non-linear geostatistical techniques are being investigated as part of the pre-feasibility study.

Ventilation modelling is used to evaluate ventilation system performance. This paper describes modelling to assess potential changes to a single entry longwall ventilation circuit to improve ventilation and gas management. The longwall panel is extracting a 215 metre face in a 1.5 metre coal seam at a depth of 900 to 1000 metres below surface. The 1.5 metre B seam is located approximately 25 metres below the main 3.0 metre A seam and the gas content of both coal seams is approximately 20 to 25 m3/t. The B seam is extracted prior to the A seam and the mine relies on fracturing of the overlying strata to induce gas emission from the A seam to reduce the gas content prior to mining. Longwall operations in the B seam are constrained by limited ventilation and high gas emissions. Due in part to statutory limits on gas concentration and air velocity, the average longwall production rate is approximately 700 t per day.Gate roads in the B seam are single entry, developed using road headers and supported with steel arches. Additional timber cog support is installed to reduce roadway closure from abutment loading. Due to the slow advance of gate road development, mine management were reluctant to consider significant mine design changes, such as two heading gate roads; therefore, the investigation focused on determining the extent to which ventilation and gas emission impacted on longwall production performance, while recommending short-term, low-cost actions to improve ventilation and gas management to support increased longwall production.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. Cu-Ag-Au mineralisation at Kluwih prospect in Eastern Java, Indonesia is related to a high-sulfidation hydrothermal system within a volcanic dome (2.35 × 1.7 km diameter). The mineralisation occurs mainly in steeply dipping, structurally-controlled quartz-enargite-pyrite veins (several centimetres to 2 m wide) and is hosted mainly in porphyritic dacite, volcaniclastic rocks and volcanic breccia of the dome and in an underlying andesite that yielded a zircon U-Pb age of 11.5 Ma.Short wave infrared spectrometer analyses were carried out for alteration mapping at Kluwih. There are two main stages of alteration produced by the hydrothermal activity. The alteration mineral assemblages indicate an advanced argillic alteration. The Cu mineralisation occurred in the form of enargite and subordinate chalcopyrite with an intergrown texture in the early stage. These mineralised veins are characterised by narrow pyrophyllite ± diaspore and dickite selvages (metres wide) and a peripheral K-muscovite envelope (sericitic alteration) up to 100 m wide. The K-muscovite envelope is zoned outward to Na-muscovite or Na-illite. Late-stage kaolinite and smectite alteration overprints the porphyritic dacite and may obscure the nature of early mica-clay alteration. The spatial distribution of different alteration assemblages suggests that the temperature of hydrothermal fluid increases with depth.Both the high-sulfidation mineralisation and advanced argillic alteration are suggested to be related to magmatic-hydrothermal fluids, which are likely to originate from an undiscovered deeper porphyry Cu-Au system below the porphyritic dacite. Based on alteration mapping results and comparisons to similar deposits, the porphyry intrusion could be up to 500 m below the volcanic dome. Lode gold deposits of the Western and Eastern provinces, South Island, New Zealand , formed as a part of the Cordilleran-style tectonism during Tasman/Tahua and Rangitata orogenesis along the Paleozoic-middle Mesozoic southern Gondwanan margin. These deposits, hosted by lower grade greenschist facies sedimentary rock sequences of the Buller, Takaka, Torlesse, and Caples terranes, universally show geological features that are consistent with the orogenic gold deposit model, and genetic features are generally suggestive of a metamorphic origin, with the possible exception of a magmatic fluid source for the mineralisation at Sams Creek. However, ore fluid chemistry in Mesozoic deposits of the Eastern province, particularly the low concentration of non-aqueous volatiles and the very dilute nature of the fluids, is uncharacteristic of most orogenic gold deposits; this must be explained by either a unique fluid source or fluid type, which we believe unlikely, or an unrecognised significance of relatively rare gas-rich fluid inclusions in the deposits. Absolute age data for gold deposits in both provinces remain equivocal, thus hindering definition of the exact temporal relationship between ore formation and terrane accretion, regional metamorphism, and magmatic arc emplacement. Mercury and antimony occurrences in subgreenschist grade parts of the Haast Schist may target the upper levels of unrecognised orogenic gold deposits. If low-grade, high-tonnage intrusion-related gold systems occur on the South Island, then they are most likely to be discovered in association with the small molybdenite-, scheelite-, or cassiterite-bearing quartz stockworks spatially related to the Karamea and Median batholiths.

This paper is intended as a review from a planner's viewpoint, of the relationship between town and country planning, a primarily government activity, and the minerals industry, which, with the exception of coal, is a largely private enterprise activity. The paper first considers the nature of the system of planning in New Zealand, and the objectives sought by planners in relation to minerals are discussed. The reasons why these objectives are not generally being achieved are investigated. A final section deals with the gap between objectives and achievement, and suggests a number of ways in which this gap may be narrowed.

Five types of mineral resource were known in the sedimentary cover of the oceans and seas floors prior to the 1980s: 1. hydrocarbon fields including some very large zones of oil and gas accumulation; 2. æRed SeaÆ type thermal oozes with increased concentrations of noble metals; 3. ferromanganese nodules; 4. concentrations of metallic sulphides (æBlack SmokersÆ); and 5. cobalt-bearing ferromanganese crusts on the summits and slopes of seamounts.   Since then, the so called æWhite SmokersÆ, containing sulphides of copper and zinc, have been discovered. The ore horizons (manganese, copper, nickel and other metals) of the sedimentary cover of deep-sea basins comprise a sixth type of mineral resource in the oceans. These horizons have not only a theoretical, but also a principal economic significance.

In this paper a laboratory investigation into the effect of confining stress, water content and gas desorption on coal permeability is presented. Of major significance is the effect of coal permeability on outburst occurrence and methane production, which is influenced by changes in stress. Test results indicated that the shrinkage of the coal matrix associated with desorption is greater than the coal matrix compressibility which will cause a reduction in the effective stress, hence increasing coal permeability.

The Central Maratoto Valley in the Coromandel Peninsula contains a sequence of veins in pervasively altered dacite + andesites of the Waipupu Formation. We recognise at least eight different vein types: (1) pyrite stringers, (2) quartz + carbonate veins, (3) crystalline quartz veins, (4) carbonate veins, (5) chlorite + carbonate veins, (6) siderite veinlets, (7) siderite + carbonate veins and (8) carbonate + pyrite veins. The overall temporal trend of the veins is from early pyrite to quartz and then to late carbonate veins. Carbonate veins and pyrite stringers both form planar and irregular veins, whereas some carbonate veins have diffuse contacts with the wall rock. Gold and base metal sulphides are associated with some of the quartz + carbonate veins. Textures within the veins reflect open space filling and multi-phase reopening. A partial record of hydrothermal activity has been preserved by vein crosscutting relationships, hydrothermal alteration minerals and fluid inclusions. Hydrothermal alteration minerals display zonation from south to north. The alteration increases from unaltered to weak propylitic alteration of andesite in the south (MVRCDC1), to sericitic alteration of andesite and dacite in the north (MVRCDC3). The alteration assemblage is dominantly sericitic, with no adularia present, drawing parallels to the Thames region where there is no adularia.

At a regional scale, the Otago Schist has been divided into textural zones, metamorphic zones, structural transposition zones, and terranes and lithologic associations. Each of these subdivisions reveals aspects of the internal structure of the lithologically monotonous Otago Schist but, to date, a map of the schist derived directly from structural data has not been made. In the present study, digitised structural data from the QMAP GIS were used to make a form line map of Schist foliation which, in turn (and using certain non-unique guiding assumptions), was used to construct a provisional foliation thickness map of the Otago Schist. Contours of dominant foliation (Sp) thickness have been drawn from 4 kIn above to 16 km below the reference level of the Caples-Torlesse terrane boundary in the schist structural pile. A recent revision of the Otago Schist textural zone classification has shown that the grain size of metamorphic white micas increases progressively with textural grade. There also appears to be a correlation between schist mica grain size and foliation thickness. Using mica grain size, it may eventually be feasible to establish the vertical structural position of samples in greenschist facies parts of the schist pile to a precision of ¦ 1 km or better, even if they are in inliers or fault-bounded blocks. Foliation thickness and mica grain size are thus potentially useful tools for research and exploration in the Otago Schist in that they assist with structural interpolation and extrapolation. Even at this early stage of application they can be used to provide hitherto unobtainable, semi-quantitative estimates of displacement on Mesozoic and Cenozoic faults and folds.

Three computerised sets of minerals information are being developed by New Zealand Geological Survey in co-operation with the Resource Management and Mining group of the Ministry of Energy: 1. Geological Resource Map: a file of information on the location, geology, geochemistry, production, and potential use of individual occurrences of aggregate, mineral, geothermal, coal, oil, and gas resources. The computer program can be used for search and retrieval of information and the production of maps and tables. The data is being published as a series of 1:250 000 maps with accompanying text and tables. 2. Maintaining high carbon activity is vital to the efficiency of any Carbon-In-Leach or Carbon-In-Pulp process. Reduced activity can lead to longer residence times or gold losses in the tails. Regenerated carbon from the CIL circuit at Macraes Gold Mine was analysed for kinetic activity and composition over a 15 month period. An increase in kinetic activity during the time period was recorded, which was linked to reduced Na and Ca loadings. A laboratory simulation of the loading, stripping and regeneration of gold was developed and tested. Kinetic activities were obtained for synthetically fouled carbons following three circuits of the laboratory simulation. It was shown the competitive gold adsorption ability of xanthate fouled carbon (previously reported as a serious deactivator) could be significantly recovered following effective thermal regeneration. This ability was maintained in a subsequent circuit loading.

Recent exploration has identified the presence of detrital iron deposits (DIDs) associated with banded iron formation (BIF) units in the north-west of the Congo Craton, Gabon. The regional geology comprises a complex of granitoids and gneisses assigned to the Archaean Chaillu Complex, within which older slivers of lower amphibolite-grade greenstones are preserved including muscovite-biotite-garnet-bearing felsic schist, amphibolite and BIF. These units are typically overlain by several metres of residuum comprising colluvium, eluvium and duricrust. The residuum is overlain by a regionally extensive loess cover from 2 m to 10 m thick.The DIDs occur within the weathered residuum as mostly unconsolidated gravels with lesser canga (CAN) duricrust draped over deeply weathered hematite. Head grades are in the range of 45 to 52 per cent Fe. Fresh BIF, located from 30 to 50 m below surface, is comprised of magnetite-quartz±amphibole. The detrital iron gravels are comprised of rod- and plate-shaped clasts of hematite (martite)-maghemite-goethite composition, in a ferruginous sand to clay-sized matrix. The DID form ridges and plateaus that coincide with magnetic highs defined using high-resolution ground magnetic surveys.The field relations and petrography indicate that the detrital iron accumulations are the result of weathering (including enrichment) and erosion of primary BIF. This includes removal of quartz, further oxidation and re-cementation of BIF to form ferruginous caprock. This cap and the in situ oxidised BIF were subsequently disaggregated and liberated, and further weathered to form the detrital iron accumulations.Metallurgical test work on bulk detrital iron samples has shown this material can be upgraded to lump and fines iron ore products with grades of 62 to 65 per cent Fe using simple scrubbing and wet screening, followed by dense media separation of the -1 mm fraction, with overall mass yields from 75 to 85 per cent. The Northparkes E26 Mine is AustraliaÆs first block cave mine. This paper presents an outline of the design and construction philosophies that drove the project development and details the excavation, ground support and construction methods used. Features of the block caving method at Northparkes include:high production rates from multiple drawpoints;hard blocky ore fractured along gypsum veins; andloading/unloading of openings due to mining induced stresses.The drawpoints are subjected to high abrasion from the flow of ore, as well as impact from both secondary blasting and from the production LHDs. In order to withstand these harsh conditions and to ensure a low maintenance environment, a conservative approach to ground support was taken. The experiences gained during construction are discussed and whether the design expectations have been achieved. By installing a high level of ground support during excavation of the openings subject to mining stresses, a low maintenance environment has been constructed. Operating costs are therefore minimised and Northparkes E26 Mine continues to produce at the lowest cost per tonne of all Australian underground mines.

PACMANUS is an actively-forming seafloor analogue of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide orebodies, situated on the crest of an andesite-dacite-rhyodacite ridge overlying rifted older arc crust in a back-arc basin. Hydrothermal deposits range from Mn-oxide crusts to Cu-Zn-rich massive sulfide mounds and chimneys containing significant Au and Ag. Preliminary data suggest a substantial magmatic component to fluids and metal sources, and we speculate that PACMANUS is the cap to a complete hydrothermal system including subvolcanic and intrusive-related mineralisation.

The structure and tectonic setting has had a strong influence on gold mineralisation at the Porgera gold deposit. Here, the structural controls on the mineralisation at Porgera are discussed and placed in a regional tectonic context. The Porgera gold deposit is related to the emplacement of the Porgera Intrusive Complex. Prior to intrusive emplacement at Porgera,Papua New Guinea was affected by a major fold and thrust episode which occurred in response to arc-continent collision in the Late Miocene. After crustal shortening the region experienced a relaxation of compression which is expressed in the deformation accompanying mineralisation at Porgera. The first stage of mineralisation (stage I) is hosted by extension fractures, and is spatially associated with exposed intrusive stocks. A later episode of mineralisation (stage II) is hosted by the faults and fractures of the Roamane Fault Zone, which was active as a dip-slip normal fault during stage II mineralisation. Therefore a change in the tectonic environment from shortening to extensional tectonics can be seen at Porgera before and during mineralisation. Rapid fault-slip during stage II mineralisation may have aided high-grade gold mineralisation by subjecting hydrothermal fluids to changes in pressure, temperature, fluid-fluid and fluid-rock interaction. Uplift to form the highlands of Papua New Guinea occurred after mineralisation and was largely complete by 4.0 Ma.

The REFLUX Classifier is used to perform particle separations on the basis of density utilising a set of parallel inclined channels positioned above a vertical fluidised section. In continuous mode, feed enters part way up the vertical section, while fluidisation water is introduced from below. Lower density particles are conveyed upwards and collected in an overflow stream, while high density particles segregate onto the inclined surfaces, settle to the base of the system and empty via an underflow stream. Pressure transducers are used to measure the suspension density in the vertical section. This suspension density is maintained by a pneumatically controlled underflow valve to maintain a target suspension density or ‘set point’.Previously, Galvin et al (2010) demonstrated the significant improvement achieved via a new laminar-shear separation mechanism, achieved by utilising closely spaced inclined channels in the REFLUX Classifier. For the separation of low-density coal particles from mineral matter, a channel spacing of 6 mm proved effective; however, for the separation of gangue minerals from much higher density minerals such as iron ore, the shear-induced lift needs to be even higher. In this paper, we examine the influence of two different channel widths on the continuous processing of an industrial iron ore feed in the REFLUX Classifier. It was found that when moving from 6.0 mm to 3.0 mm channels, the ability of the system to reject coarser gangue material and retain finer high density material across a particle size range from 0.125 to 1.0 mm was increased, resulting in a higher grade product.CITATION:Hunter, D M, Zhou, J, Iveson, S M and Galvin, K P, 2017. A Transient Electromagnetic (TEM) geophysical survey was trialled in Bowen Basin Permian coal measures overprinted by Cretaceous intrusion. The trial’s intention was to compare whether TEM could assess residual coal more accurately and economically than drilling.TEM results were promising but had limitations. TEM did not compare to drilling for defining coal thickness or relative level definition. However, TEM resolved conductive anomalies laterally; providing a qualitative picture of remnant coal.Three material types and associated conductivities occur within the trial area: overburden (sandstone/siltstone), intrusive sills and heat affected coal.Ground conductivity was analysed by measuring decay of residual current within the TEM loop. Fast decay related to resistive overburden and intrusion, attenuated decay related to conductive coal.Generally speaking, carbon content governs coal resistivity where good quality, low ash, bright coal is more resistive relative to dull, high ash coal. Though in the trial area, relative to intrusion and overburden, coal was found to be the most conductive of the three materials.By modelling conductive anomalies, a general picture emerged of remnant coal regions. The Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP) of SW China is host to magmatic Ni–Cu–(PGE) sulfide and Fe–Ti–V oxide deposits which contain economic to subeconomic concentrations of precious and base metals. The formation of a given deposit-type (ie sulfide versus oxide) is thought to be related to the type of parental magma (ie high-Ti versus low-Ti) and the subsequent processes (ie fractional crystallisation and sulfide segregation), which allowed for metal enrichment.We examined the PGE of Baima and Taihe oxide-bearing layered mafic intrusions from the ELIP (Shellnutt, Ma and Qi, in press), and compared them with the nearby Xinjie and Hongge intrusions as well as with the Emeishan flood basalts. The PGE results for the two intrusions are contrasting. The Baima gabbroic rocks are almost PGE-barren (SPGE < 4 ppb) whereas the Taihe gabbroic rocks are variable, but generally much higher in PGE concentrations (SPGE < 2 to ~300 ppb), although the gabbros from both intrusions are enriched in platinum-subgroup PGE (PPGE = Rh, Pt and Pd) relative to iridium-subgroup PGE (IPGE = Os, Ir and Ru). Cu/Zr, Ni/Ir, Y/Pt, Cu/Pd and Ni/Ir systematics suggest that the Baima rocks were derived from a relatively evolved, mafic, S-undersaturated parental magma that was affected by earlier sulfide segregation. In contrast, the Taihe rocks record evidence of both S-saturated and S-undersaturated conditions and that the parental magma was likely emplaced very close to S-saturation. Through comparison of the PGE contents in the Emeishan flood basalts and the Emeishan oxide-bearing intrusions, we provide a self-consistent model for ELIP that the PGE budget in a magma is not strictly controlled by magma series (high-Ti versus low-Ti), but very much by crustal contamination.CITATION:Ma, G, Shellnutt, J G and Qi, L, 2015. The headwaters of Skippers Creek and the Shotover River are reputed to be among the richest alluvial gold catchments in the world. This alluvial gold has no doubt been derived from reef systems similar to, and associated with, the Bullendale lodes. Physiographically the prospect covers steep ridges and deeply incised gullies between the Richardson Mountains in the west and the Harris Mountains in the east. Vegetation is mainly tussock with bush either side of Murdochs Creek. Access to the area is by metalled road to Skippers and then by 4WD track to Bullendale. Alternatively the prospect area can be reached by helicopter from Queenstown in around ten minutes.
