Some of the problems associated with drill core evaluation of alluvial tin deposits and correlation with plant-scale recovery are discussed. Panning churn-drill cores on site tends to undervalue such deposits because of failure to recover completely all the available liberated cassiterite, and secondary gravity processing may also fail to give an accurate determination of potentially recoverable tin. However, by using a combination of heavy liquid separations, x-ray fluorescence analysis for Sn, and normal methods of reflected and transmitted polarized light microscopy, a quantitative assessment of alluvial material can be carried- out. The information obtained may include the liberation characteristics and distribution with size of the cassiterite, the nature and quantities of the various gangue minerals, and the amount of potentially recoverable cassiterite in the material as compared with the amount locked with light gangue minerals and hence difficult or impossible to recover. In addition, an analysis of the efficiencies of the various gravity processes, such as panning, jigging, and tabling, used to determine "recoverable tin" in the alluvial material, can be carried out. A detailed example is given of this type of investigation, in which an assessment was made of a churn-drill core from Uncia, Bolivia.

A study of the swelling behaviour of a single batch of high-grade iron ore pellets during hydrogen reduction in a fixed bed showed that the extent of swelling is governed by the nucleation and growth of crystalline iron protuberances from the wüstite grains. Over the reduction temperature range 650 to 1000°C, it was found that substantial degrees of swelling can occur at temperatures in excess of 850°C, and significant variations in the swelling behaviour of individual pellets from different bed levels are observed under these conditions.The results are discussed in terms of a recent swelling theory and shown to be in general agreement.

Solid. dense, air-cooled slag can fulfil most, if not all, the functions of natural stone for civil engineering purposes. The value of pumice, also, has long been appreciated, and processes for the manufacture of similar synthetic material for light-weight concretes and insulating fills have been developed in past years.Foamed slag is, in effect, blast furnace pumice and is often referred to on the European continent as metallurgical pumice. It is made by the treatment of molten blast furnace slags with a critical quantity of water during which process the slag cools and expands into a sponge-like mass. The connection between foamed slag and air-cooled slag is also considered and a basis for density control given.All blast furnace slag cannot be foamed to give a product which would comply with B.S.S.877; 1939 Foamed Blast Furnace Slag. A large proportion of the total output of molten slag lacks the necessary inherent properties. This investigation attempts to discover the conditions necessary for the production of foamed slag capable of meeting the British specification.EARLIER WORKIt was generally accepted (Parker, 1951; Gallai-Hatchard, 1955) that the spongy structure of foamed slag was caused mechanically by steam trapped in the slag when it was poured into water. It was assumed that slags which would not foam would not trap steam, because their viscosities and surface tensions were unsatisfactory, on account of temperature and/or composition. The earliest systematic investigation was made by Frisak (1923) who attempted to establish a limiting chemical composition for foamable slags. He decided that foamable slags covered most blast furnace slag compositions on the basis of silica, alumina, and lime, and further "that the replacement of lime by magnesia up to 15 per cent has no noteworthy effect on foamability, that moderate quantities of alkalis are not deleterious, that sulphur raises the foamability and that MnO is only deleterious in the presence of 1...

Australia's iron ore industry is entering a challenging period with the development of new orebodies, the introduction of new products and the push for further downstream processing. In addition, the recent price reductions for iron ore exports have intensified the focus on reducing capital and operating costs. To assist in these areas, CSIRO is expanding its research capabilities, including the incorporation into CSIRO of the Mineral Processing Laboratories in Perth, which were previously managed by the WA Department of Minerals and Energy. In addition, a large part of the $24.4 million expansion of CSIRO's Pinjarra Hills laboratories in Brisbane will be devoted to enhancing iron ore processing research, providing purpose built laboratories and large process bays.

This paper reviews the history of environmental assessment in New Zealand with reference to mineral developments. Emphasis is given to larger more controversial projects particularly metal mines. The changing role and application of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Procedures is examined in the context of changes in the government's environmental administration and the response of the Ministry of Energy's resource allocation group. Conclusions are drawn on the effectiveness of the present environmental assessment activities and on the allocation of administration of priorities in the Ministry. The Ministry of Energy has effectively ceased to exist.

When we are beset with the economic problems the world faces today, we are always inclined to look at the shorter term future. Today I would like to take a long-term view of our industry, project historical demands for our products into the future and discuss opportunities for our members. Perhaps we could firstly look at the long-term demand trends for our metals. If I tend to use non ferrous metals as a basis for my figures it is because this data is more readily available to me. I am sure that most other products of our industry show similar trends.

Construction of cave mining systems requires significant capital expenditure and long-term commitment of human, equipment and material resources before production commences. Risks and uncertainties of these large-scale mining projects are significantly higher than for small-scale projects. This is due to the complexity and interactions of the construction schedule components and the large scale and uniqueness of such projects. One way to successfully manage construction uncertainties that would lead to schedule delays is to include a reasonable cost contingency in the budget estimation. A real options approach based on the least-squares Monte Carlo (LSM) method is used to estimate cost contingency associated with schedule uncertainty in mass mining projects. Cost contingency is estimated as the cost of potential project crashing (acceleration) decisions, which pays for not extending the schedule. While such a significant undertaking is expected to be subject to some delays, these can have an enormous impact on the economic value of such projects. The value of the crashing option was explicitly formalised into the process of valuation, as it is assumed to be a single option being considered in the valuation at every decision point prior to the construction completion date. As a part of the proposed method, a stochastic function for the percentage of remaining scope of work for the remaining duration of the entire project was integrated into a framework of numerical simulations. This ensured that this function can implicitly account for sources of schedule uncertainties for projects represented by multiple and overlapping work packages. The LSM method was applied to a real case scenario in an operating block cave mine, with modified scale and features. The results yielded by the LSM method indicated that significant changes in capital budget allocation stem from variation in a contractor’s risk perception and confidence level of estimated delays.CITATION:Ahmed, H M and Dunbar, W S, 2016. Powders prepared from the algae Gracilaria secundata, Ulva lactuca and Ecklonia radiatawere shown to provide sole nutritional support for microbial, microaerobic, biodegradation of low-grade manganese dioxide ore. G. secundata was the most effective bacterial nutrient giving 32 per cent recovery of Mn++, at an average rate of 63 mg Mn++/litre/day and a yield of 24 mg Mn++/g dry powder in microaerobic cultures containing 1.5 per cent (w/v)MnOz ore and 3per cent (w/v) powder over 14 days. Although G. secundata was approximately half as effective as molasses in supporting microbial decomposition ofMnOz, possible on-site growth ofthe alga could be economicaIIy more practical than transporting carbohydrate to a distant mine site.

Water is the main medium for removing impurities from iron ore during wet processing to achieve a higher quality product. However, there is a substantial increase in freshwater consumption due to an increase in demand from the following two factors: in the past 55 years the world population has doubled from 3 to 7.5 billion and crude steel production has increased five times from approximately 350 to 1662 Mt/a (IISI, 2008). Furthermore, social development in developing countries exacerbates water consumption making freshwater an increasingly valuable resource with an average distribution of 70 per cent for agriculture, 20 per cent for industry and only ten per cent for domestic consumption (Hourtolle, 2005; OECD, 2009). Rapidly changing regulations over the access and preservation of water across the world indicates the growing importance of this issue, so the mining industry must adapt to this continual change and must be committed to increasing the efficiency of water usage.Tailings dams receive most of the water used by the process plant. In arid regions where evaporation is high and availability of water low or non-existent, technical solutions other than the conventional tailings dam, such as thickened and/or filtered tailings, exist to optimise the recovery of water and reduce the need for external water consumption. However, these solutions present additional challenges, such as energy consumption and transportation from the process plant to the ultimate storage area.This paper considers a range of alternatives covering thickening and filtering, transportation and storage, water return, closure and rehabilitation. Mining projects in the future will be more affected by the rising cost in water and tighter regulations in accessing water and energy. The McArthur lead-zinc-silver deposit is of the stratiform type. It consists of a mineralised bituminous shale sequence containing some tuffites, numerous graded beds and isolated slump breccia horizons. The principal sulfides; pyrite, sphalerite and galena, are essentially restricted to the shales and the genetically unrelated turbidites contain only minor mineralisation. The geochemistry of the deposit has been investigated with respect to the stratigraphic column and mineralogy of the sediments. A sedimentary origin is advocated for the deposit. Volcanism, thermal spring activity and high salinities, perhaps related to the Emu Fault, are considered as contributing factors to ore genesis. The metallurgy of this deposit is discussed in relation to its geologic history.

Lignite deposits of Central Otago Miocene Dunstan Formation accumulated on a broad alluvial plain and on deltas that flanked a large freshwater lake. The regional subsurface distribution and configuration of the lignite-bearing strata are identified within the context of depositional systems and placed into a genetically defined stratigraphic framework. The stratigraphic and depositional models constructed, should form an integral part of the geological assessment process to guide future regional or mine based lignite drilling programmes. Further testing and evaluation of the commercialy important lignite deposits in the Blackstone and Roxburgh Coalfields are required to adequately characterise the lignites and their geological setting, particularly to select methods of mining and wise uses of the lignite.

The reactions between molten aluminium and cryoIite have been determined from a material balance of all components involved in the process. The interpretation of results were supported by x-ray diffraction studies of the evolved vapours, quenched electrolyte samples, and side-reaction products.The most important reaction involves the formation of both Na2F (sodium subfluoride) and chiolite in the fused electrolyte. The Na2F accelerates vaporization of the melt. Some AIF (aluminium monofluoride) may also be formed but the proportion of this is much less than for the former subvalent compound.

Agglomeration for Copper Heap Leaching Agglomeration of ore is a method which can be used to eliminate the migration of fine grained particles throughout a leach heap. Without agglomeration, fine ore particles are able to migration within the heap, clogging flow channels and producing large areas where access of the solution is poor. In order to gain the benefits of agglomeration and improve agglomerate strength even further in copper heap leaching, an economical, acid-resistant binder is needed. However, most binders have been used without any systematic reasoning. A set of novel testing methods were developed, including a soak test, percolation flooded columns, and larger long-term leach columns. The soak test compares the degree of breakdown when agglomerates are subjected to an acidic environment. While the percolation flooded columns and larger long-term leach columns evaluate the flow of leach solution throughout the ore bed. Systematic studies have been completed on a wide range of binders using these novel testing procedures. It was found that for a low grade chalcocite ore, which was rich in silica, from a southwest US mine, polyacrylamides reduced the fines migration the best in the novel soak test. The non-ionic binder, in particular, was found to reduce fines migration as much as 93 per cent. Several of the binders tested were shown to increase the hydraulic conductivities of the agglomerated ore up to 2.5 mm/sec, compared to a hydraulic conductivity of only 0.25 mm/sec when no binder was used. These binders also prevented 'slumping' of the ore, which indicates a decrease in breakdown of the agglomerates. The use of a binder also showed no interference with leaching reactions in long-term leaching experiments.

As part of an investigation of the deep structure of the Waihi Basin, an extensive set of resistivity measurements was recently collected by DSIR Geology & Geophysics. The objective of this work is to map deep resistivity changes throughout the Waihi area in order to contribute to a better understanding of the regional geophysical structure. This research is also aimed at improving techniques for locating 'deposits of epithermal mineral resources, and helping to establish their origin and genetic relationship to fossil geothermal systems.   The results indicate that the basin south of Waihi is underlain by an extensive layer of low resistivity, modelled as a 5ohm-m layer several hundred metres thick. Lake sediments (mudstones), as exposed in the south western part of the basin, near Waitawheta, are the most likely source of this low resistivity layer, although hydrothermally altered clays and/or elevated temperatures are other possible causes. Strong northeast trending anisotropy is also observed, implying structural links from Waitawheta through to Golden Valley. The observed resistivity pattern is consistent with a æburied calderaÆ or æfaulted depressionÆ structural model for the basin, as inferred from gravity and magnetic data.

A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.Low-sulfidation epithermal gold mineralisation at Ridge Mountain occurs within the Oligocene to Miocene volcanic rocks comprising andesite, porphyritic dacite and diatreme breccia. A diatreme breccia complex with a NE–SW elongated orientation covers an area of 3.0 × 1.7 km. Four main stages of mineralisation were identified, comprising: E–W- to NW–SE-trending quartz-chalcedony veins with disseminated pyrite, chalcopyrite and gold. N–S- to NNE–SSW-trending breccia veins with quartz matrix and disseminated pyrite and accessory sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and gold. NE–SW-trending quartz and calcite veins with disseminated pyrite and accessory sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and gold. ESE–WNW- to ENE–WSW-trending quartz veins with disseminated pyrite. This stage is only mineralisation that is hosted by diatreme breccia and clearly postdates.Quartz veins of the first, third and fourth stage are less than 2 m wide. Only breccia veins of the second stage are up to 10 m wide. Gold is present in all stages as microscopic inclusions in quartz and sporadically in pyrite. Macroscopic gold can be seen in the first and second mineralisation stages. Gold commonly occurs in association with sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite in the second and third mineralisation stages.CITATION:Kucera, J, 2015. Three main divisions of the Proterozoic are recognized in the North-West Division of Western Australia. These are referred to, in order of decreasing age, as the Mt. Bruce Supergroup, the Bresnahan Group, and theBangemall Group. The stratigraphy and distribution of each is described, their relative ages discussed, and a brief geological history of the whole area is presented.

The zinc-lead lode at Rosebery, on the West coast of Tasmania, has a total length of over 4000 ft. It consists of five elongated lenses parallel to the foliation planes of the quartz sericite schist, and is situated at the junction of the quartz sericite schist and a thin belt of slate. The lenses consist of massive, fine grained sulphide ore, with small amounts of quartz, barite, sericite and chlorite, and they terminate in masses of low grade ore. The gangue minerals increase in quantity in the low grade ore which includes small quantities of the manganese garnet, spessartite. The schist walls of the lenses are in places impregnated with lode minerals to a degree sufficient to permit them to be regarded as economic ore.The ore-bodies have developed from incoming mineral solutions by the replacement of the quartz sericite schist and are localised where the ore solutions have been confined by a relatively impervious slate band. The early stages of replacement of the schists are signified by the development of pyritic bands which are succeeded by a strong development of zinc blende. With ptogressive crystallisation, the character of the mineral solutions gradually changed and the development of galena, and its associated bournonite, became more important in the later stages.Remnants of the replaced schist, in the form of isolated wisps and schlieren of sericite and chlorite, are present in the ore body, more noticeably in the pyritic specimens. An important feature of the ore is the association of small ogllantities of gold with trahedrite.

Nickel-bearing ores in North-east Dundas have been described by A. McIntosh Reid1 as occurring at the margins of narrow dykes of gabbro, norite, peridodite and pyroxenite, which are intrusive into the Dundas series of slates, quartzites and breccias. They occur chiefly in the neighbourhood of the Five Mile, near Zeehan, as small, narrow ore-bodies which are mostly less than 100 ft. in length.The ores are massive sulphides containing pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and the nickel sulphide, pentlabdite.A less common nickel-bearing mineral, gersdorffite, has been recently found in an adit, which is marked on Reid's geological plan of Dundas as the Hecla mine, 30 chains south of the crossing of the North-east Dundas tramway, over the Great Northern Creek, and at an, elevation of about 350 ft. above the tramway. The occurrence is in a lode traversing the Dundas slates and quartzites, and is situated, according to Reid's plan, about 20 chains beyond the northern extremity of a narrow basic dyke which is continuous for a distance of two miles in a south-westerly direction.The mine eonsists of a prospecting adit following the course of a lode for about 275 ft. in a direction a little west of south. The low values of the lode are indicated by a bulk sample from a shallow winze about 100 ft. from the entrance which is reported by Reid to contain:

The installation of the Flotation Capacity Project flow sheet in the copper concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited has recently been completed. The project involved increasing the flotation capacity with Wemco tank cells and Jameson cells as well as changing the copper cleaner circuit layout. The engineering design and construction for the brownfield expansion had significant involvement from operational, maintenance and technical personnel adopting the same approach as the highly successful George Fisher project in the Lead/Zinc Concentrator at MIM. The involvement of people familiar with the concentrator allowed for smooth integration of the changes into an operating concentrator with minimal downtime. Detailed circuit analysis over many years identified opportunities for improvements in the flotation circuit for both grade and recovery. This paper describes the program of work that led to the Copper Concentrator Flotation Capacity Project, and the implementation of the circuit expansion and flow sheet changes that resulted in an overall improvement in the circuit recovery.

Electrochemical Behaviour of Massive Chaclopyrite Bioleached Electrodes in Presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus caldus In this work, the monitoring of bacterial and chemical dissolution of massive chaclopyrite was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV); the mineral surface was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the elements were examined by Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX). The electrolyte employed for the electrochemical tests was the medium used to bioleaching the electrodes (3.0 g/L (NH4)2+SO4, 0.5 g/L K2HPO4, 0.5 g/L MgSO4+7H2O and 0.1 g/L Ca(NO3)2).The results showed differences in voltagramms carried out by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus caldus: In bioleached electrodes tested in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, the anodic and cathodic current signals were larger than with Acidithiobacillus caldus. The analysis of CV results allowed attributing the different peaks observed in both the direct and reverse potential scanning to the oxidation of chaclopyrite to a secondary copper mineral (bornite, chalcocite and covellite) and its reduction via different non stoichiometric copper sulphides intermediaries. Surface evidences were observed by SEM, and chemical elements evidences were also investigated by EDAX.
