THE grades of commercial steel produced in large quantities can be divided into two general types from the standpoint of ingot structure-killed and rimmed. Killed steel covers a wide variety with carbon contents throughout the range of the steel portion of the iron-carbon diagram, and is the kind usually used in the production of alloy steels. Rimmed steel is normally associated with carbon ranges under 0.30 per cent, and is not yet used to a large extent in alloy practice, except for copper-bearing steels. The fundamental differences in the ingots made from these two types of steel can be seen most easily in Figs. 1 to 7. In the rimmed ingot shown in Figs. 5 to 7 there are two lines of blowholes approximately parallel to the sides and coming together at the top and at the bottom of the ingot. In the killed ingots shown in Figs. 1 to 4 these blowholes are not present. Also, the rimmed ingot has no well defined pipe, as com-pared to the deep pipe on the killed ingots, and there are numerous pri-mary blowholes in the lower portion of the rimmed ingot perpendicular to the surface and close to it, while on the killed ingot there are no blowholes of this type in the ingot shown in Fig. 1 and very small ones close to the surface in the lower part of the ingot shown in Figs. 2 to 4. With respect to the presence of pipe and the primary blowholes, the structure may vary considerably in both rimmed and killed ingots, therefore these cannot be considered as fundamental structural characteristics differ-entiating the two types of steel. The primary blowholes in rimmed ingots may be much less pronounced than those in the ingot shown in Figs. 5 to 7-as, for example, in "ingot iron," which is entirely free from them. An example of a cross section of an ingot-iron ingot is shown on page 16 of "Research and Methods of Analysis of Iron and Steel," published by the American Rolling Mill Co. (1920). A certain amount of pipe may also occur in rimmed ingots, though it is normally porous and not as well defined or deep as in the killed ingot of Fig. 1. The formation and subsequent decomposition of metastable phases in Ti-Ni alloys containing up to 11 pet (atomic) Ni have been studied. The decomposition of a completely retained ß phase and of a completely transformed 8 phase in a 6 pet alloy has been followed by X-ray diffraction and metallographic methods and by hardness determinations made during the process. The possible mechanisms of the reactions are discussed. PREVIOUS investigations of the Ti-Ni system have usually been limited to phase diagram studies; but little attention has been given to metastable phases and tempering processes. These are important, however, since equilibrium conditions are rarely achieved—nor, perhaps, are they desired—in practice. Up to the present time the available transformation data for titanium alloys appear to be restricted to isothermal transformation curves for selected binary and ternary systems. No quantitative studies have been made of the mechanism by which equilibrium is approached. Several independent investigations have been carried out to determine the Ti-Ni phase diagram. Early work by Wallbaum' and later by Long et al.' produced tentative phase diagrams which were not representative of true binary conditions, since the alloys were contaminated with oxygen and nitrogen. The most recent diagram (Fig. 1) is due to Margolin et al.," and a slight modification of the a + ß/ß boundary (shown dotted) has been proposed by McQuillan.' The structure of the phase Ti,Ni was shown by Duwez and Taylor" to be face-centered-cubic, with 96 atoms per structure cell. The formation of a martensitic ß phase (close-packed-hexagonal) in Ti-Ni alloys has generally been observed when specimens of low nickel content are rapidly cooled from the 0 (body-centered-cubic) range. Margolin et al. reported an increasing tendency for P to be retained in lump specimens as the nickel content increases. McQuillan' has studied the effect on the microstructure of delay time in quenching, and has reported the formation of pro- eutectoid a precipitate in a quenched hypoeutectoid alloy. In a previous study of Ti-Fe alloys," experiments were made on powder specimens produced by filing alloy ingots. Techniques were devised for the preparation and heat treatment of alloys, and X-ray diffraction methods were used both for structure determinations and phase ratio estimations. A similar approach has been made in this study of Ti-Ni alloys. The Silicates are m part strictly anhydrous, in part hydrous, as the zeolites and the amorphous clays, etc. Furthermore, a large number of the silicates yield more or less water upon ignition, and in many cases it is known that they are, therefore, to be regarded as basic (or acid) silicates. The line, however, between the strictly anhydrous and hydrous silicates cannot be sharply drawn, since with many species which yield water upon ignition the part played by the elements forming the water is as yet uncertain. Furthermore, in the cases of several groups, the strict arrangement must be deviated from, since the relation of the species is best exhibited by introducing the related hydrous species immediately after the others. This chapter closes with a section including the Titanates, Silico-titanates, Titano-niobates, etc., which connect the Silicates with the Niobates and Tantalates. Some Titanates have already been included among the Oxides.

Cable sheaths made from common lead have been used to protect underground cables since the beginning of the power-cable industry. Only within the last few years, however, has a systematic study of the production methods and of the causes of failures in cable sheathing been undertaken. Recent increases in the use and demands for service made upon power cables have emphasized the importance of high-quality cable sheaths. It was customary for the users to attribute the cause for their sheath failures to the lack of purity of the lead, but this contention has not been borne out by field and laboratory inspection of the sheaths. During the past two years the writers have had an opportunity to examine various types of sheaths that were removed from power cables after failure. These samples were obtained from various parts of the country and represent, it is supposed, the production of the principal cable manufacturers. Aside from corrosion, the common field difficulties can be classified either as mechanical or structural, as outlined below, and when structural irregularities are found they can all be attributed to manufacturing causes and in no way reflect the purity of the lead. The trend of American construction toward permanence and longevity is noticeable in the more recent coal plant installations; also, the policy of many coal operators has changed from seeking to obtain the desired tonnage from several plants of small capacities to designing a single installation to produce the whole amount. The mine openings and plant of the Nemacolin mine of The Buckeye Coal Co., are located on the Greene County side of the Monongahela River, 73 miles south of Pittsburgh. The map (Fig. 1) shows the general location, also the Lambert syncline. This syncline partly accounts for the selection of the site; the other reasons were the possibilities of rail and river shipments. Two shafts and a slope were sunk to the coal, work starting on all three in the second half of the year 1917. The air shaft was sunk to a depth of 243 ft. and completed in February, 1918; the slope was completed in November, and the skip shaft was stopped at a depth of 21 ft. below the coal, then the concrete lining was stopped 8 ft. above the coal August, 1918. Work on the skip shaft was resumed May, 1923, and sunk to a depth of 60 ft. below the coal by September, but it was not until May, 1924, that the lining was poured. Max. Min. The surface plan shows the relative positions of the openings. Coal was first hoisted from the air shaft May 7, 1918, and entry driving was continued; but the coal had to be stored, as the railroad had not been extended from Crucible to Nemacolin. As soon as the slope was driven to the coal and the linings concreted, the entries were driven along projected lines to connect with those advancing from the air shaft, and skip shaft. As soon as the underground connections had been made between the two shafts, the hoisting by buckets was inaugurated at the skip shaft and construction on the fan at the air shaft started.

THE hydrotator coal-cleaning process was developed as an economic necessity to meet the ever-increasing demand for an inexpensive method of cleaning coal down to the sizes ordinarily referred to as "dust." As the most urgent demand seemed to be in the anthracite field, all experimental work has been conducted in that territory during the past 2 years, with the exception of a few months during the strike of 1925-26, when some experiments were performed in the Alabama bituminous fields. The first commercial plant was constructed at the Middle Creek Colliery of the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co., Pottsville, Pa. This plant is now operating. APPLICATION The field of application of the process is: 1. Cleaning anthracite fines, ordinarily described as "slush" or "silt." Slush contains all sizes from %2 in. down to and including "dust." (Anthracite passing a 32-in. mesh is also referred to as No. 2 Barley and No. 4 Buckwheat.) 2. Cleaning sizes too fine for recovery by other methods. 3. Removal of coal from sand circulated in the Chance sand-flotation process. 4. Cleaning of bituminous sizes. from 3/8 in. down to "dust. 5. As equipment for the performance of the froth flotation process. 6. Other separating, extraction and _washing. processes which may be considered outside the realm of coal cleaning. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION Fig. 1 shows the method of classification practised under the Hydrotator patent:1 In coal cleaning the machines are operated as "hindered settling" classifiers, the flow of solids and liquids being so controlled that the units may be combined in series.

THE decades immediately before and after the end of the nineteenth century (1890-1910) were a period of increased activity in mineral industry education. One reason for this, undoubtedly, was the rapid increase in mineral production in the decade 1880-1890; pig iron and copper production tripled; coal, lead, and zinc output more than doubled. Most of the other mineral substances followed the same general trend. Aluminum production began in 1886; petroleum output, which in 1888 was less than it was in 1882, almost doubled in the next three years. Gold alone showed no appreciable change until its discovery at Cripple Creek in 1891, followed by the Klondike in 1896, brought to boiling a public interest in minerals that had been simmering for some years previously. The first cyanide plant in the United States was erected at Bodie in 1892, and the first chlorination plant at Cripple Creek* the next year. Silver- lead smelting had already greatly developed, and the metallurgy of copper was almost transformed. The hearth area and smelting capacity of copper reverberatory furnaces more than quadrupled between 1878 and 1894; matte converters were first erected at Butte in 1884. Copper production of the United States in 1899 was 20 times that of 1872. While it was the increased technology used in mineral production that really made the field attractive for educated young men, undoubtedly they did not realize that, and were impressed mainly by the quantitative increase in output. Another factor was the increased general interest in engineering education; three times as many men took engineering degrees in the United States in 1890 as in 1880; 1892 showed almost a 56 per cent increase over 1890. Expeximental viscosity and density data of lour natural gases are presented for temperatures from WO to 340F and pressures from 100 to 8.000 psia. A correlation is also discussed and results reported. INTRODUCTION This investigation is one of several efforts by the authors to provide viscosity data for pure hydrocarbons and mixtures. Results of some pure hydrocarbons and their mix tures have been presented." Several predictive methods and correlations have also been reported.'," This paper presents the experimental viscosity and density data of four natural gases and confirms a correlation in a previous study. APPARATUS The viscometer was described previously. 2,6 A bank of stainless steel pycnometers was included to determine density in conjunction with the viscosity measurements (Fig. I). DATA AND MATERIALS The natural gases were furnished by the Atlantic Richfield Co. (Samples 1 and 21, the Continental Oil Co. (Sample 3) and the Pan American Petroleum Corp. (Sample 4). Table 1 shows the composition of these gases obtained by mass spectrometer analysis. The pure component viscosity data used in the correlation have been published."".'"', '" Experimental and calculated viscosity data for the natural gases are presented in Tables 2 through 5. CORRELATION Starling and Ellington"' have reported several semi-empirical expressions based to a certain extent on the theory of viscosity advanced by Born and Green.' (4) Y = 1.11 -r 0.04 X ........(5) Over the pressure and temperature range studied in this investigation, this equation represents the data on methane, ethane, propane, n-butane and four methane-n-butane mixtures with a standard deviation* of ? 1.89 per cent. Density data by Sage and Lacey" were used to fit the equations. Eq. 2 gives reliable values of the viscosity of light hydrocarbons without prior knowledge of experimental viscosity values, but accurate density data must be available. Eq. 2 was used to predict viscosity values for the natural gases studied in this paper. The particular set of parameters contained in Eqs. 3 through 5 gave values that reproduced experimental data within 25 per cent. Needless to say, in using Eq. 2 better density values will give better viscosity results. However, those engineers who do not have accurate density values at hand or the time, or such facilities as a library, computer, etc. readily available, may feel uneasy in using Eq. 2. Therefore, the authors sought the easiest but by no means best density prediction method, which was reported by Kaf 30 years ago. A set of density values, which were calculated based on Kay's method, and a generalized compressibility factor chart were used to fit Eq. 2. The results are:

Minerals have played a prominent role in the affairs of man and nations since time immemorial but with the advent of the industrial revolution, expanding use of the products of the mineral kingdom became synonymous with the material progress of mankind. Individuals and business groups have recognized this fact so have been aggressive in searching for and utilizing mineral resources, with notable success. Indeed, their achievements are primarily responsible for the present Machine Age. On the other hand, until recently the body politic has failed to grasp fully the essentiality of minerals although, at times, access to mineral supplies has been an important factor in the political maneuvers of nations. This chapter is concerned primarily with the broader political and economic relationships of mineral resources to the world economy, and with the internal and external actions of nations in the field of minerals. Many factors that condition the mineral economy of regions and the world as a whole, influence the internal and external affairs of individual nations. The more important of these are: 1. The nature of man's dependence on minerals. 2. The problems resulting from the unique characteristics of mineral occurrence. 3. Geopolitical concepts. 4. Minerals and world power. Actions of individual nations affecting their mineral economy seek two basic objectives: 1. Attainment and maintenance of prosperity. 2. Military security. Other objectives may be cited but on careful analysis they become integral parts or extreme phases of the two points noted above. For example, the twentieth century aggressions of the USSR, Germany, Italy, and Japan might be considered as direct bids for world power but they also can be interpreted as exaggerated or mistaken efforts toward military security and peacetime prosperity. Similarly, trade barriers, nationalization of industries, foreign exchange manipulations, taxation, monopolistic prac-

. RECENTLY two papers on the structure of eutectics were read before the British Institute of Metals, one by F. L. Brady1 and the other by A. Portevin.2 In the preparation of photomicrographs of laboratory specimens as illustrations for student work, and in connection with various researches; the writer has been working along the same line for some, time and, therefore, was much interested in the results given, especially those of Portevin. He has correlated the information on the subject and has outlined a broad scientific basis for future work along this line. It is largely with the idea-of adding something by way of illustration to the work already done that this paper is written. The eutectic is generally understood to mean the alloy having the lowest melting point of any alloy of the system, and in which the melt becomes supersaturated with reference to the two or more phases which, separate out simultaneously (or alternately). From the surface pattern, the eutectic means; a structure with no primary crystals. It is not always easy to get the exact eutectic composition in making any alloy; in fact, a slight range in composition may be expected and some of the coarser particles may be richer in either of the composing metals. Even when chemical analysis shows the right composition, differences in density of the pure metals may cause segregation, or. supercooling resulting from different crystallizing properties may give a surface pattern the appearance of being on one side of the eutectic point. However, the alloys on either side of the eutectic composition, showing primary crystals of one of the phases and the effect of the pro-eutectic form on the surface pattern of the eutectic make a very interesting study, which is slightly touched upon in this paper. The phases, or microconstituents, of a eutectic may be pure metals (Pb-Sb, Tl-Au), solid solutions (Cd-Zn), a pure metal and a solid solution; (Ag-Sn), or a pure metal or solid solution with an intermetallic compound (Sb-Mg, Sb-Cu, As-Cu, Bi-Te, etc.).

AN IMPORTANT innovation in Alabama in the semi-longwall type of coal mining as applied to low-dipping thin seams has been introduced by the Galloway Coal Co., mining the Mary Lee high-ash seam which averages only 26 in. thick. The property is their Mill Creek mine, near Carbon Hill, Ala., in the Warrior coal field. The results, although not final, indicate that roof conditions can be successfully handled by this method without loss of walls, with a rate of recovery much above that possible with the room-and-pillar method, and at the low production cost necessary for this grade of coal. Double cross-headings are turned off a main haulageway on 60-ft. centers and driven 40 ft. wide with thin chain pillars between. These double entries are turned at 525-ft. intervals, leaving a solid block of coal 440 ft. across; that is, from the outside of one pair of headings to the inside of the next pair is 440 ft. The bottom, which consists of hard fireclay, is taken in these entries 8 ft. wide and 4 ft. deep for head room.

Exploration for new pools of gas in the Oriskany sand and continued exploitation of areas already known to be productive in that sand were the main features of petroleum activity in West Virginia during 1938. To a considerable extent the exploration program resulted in failure, but the extension of former areas was eminently successful. Throughout the state, in general, less drilling was done than in 1937. According to the West Virginia Department of Mines, only 631 permits to drill were issued, as compared to 1034 in 1937. The account of operations, as reported by trade journals and other sources, shows that 766 wells were drilled, resulting in 131 oil wells with 1609 bbl. of daily production; 484 gas wells with 1,232,216,000 cu. ft. of daily open flow; and 151 dry holes. Several discoveries indicate new pools of oil and gas; and several extensions of old gas pools have been made. In spite of a decreased number of total wells, the figures for new gas and oil are both larger than in 1937. The new oil average is 12.3 bbl. per well per day; the gas average is 2,545,900 cu. ft. per well per day, the ratio of dry holes to completions is 19.71 per cent. No general attempt was made to discover new pools of oil. A continued low price, coupled with reduced takings, combined to make drilling unattractive. The principal oil wells completed, by counties are: Boone, 6; Calhoun, 10; Clay, 7; Gilmer, 5; Kanawha, 5; Lincoln, 7; Pleasants, 13; Ritchie, 32; Roane, 6; Tyler, 7; and Wirt, 14. Production for the year, according to the Oil and Gas Journal, was 3,724,750 barrels. The leading counties in gas, with the number of successful wells in each, are: Boone, 16; Braxton, 13; Cabell, 47; Calhoun, 29; Doddridge, 10; Gilmer, 55; Kanawha, 127; Lincoln, 18; Ritchie, 29; Wayne, 19; and Wetzel, 26. Production for the year is estimated as 150,000,000,000 cubic feet. Pipe-line construction, which was extensive in 1937, was insignificant in 1938. Exploration was not as active as in 1937. Field prices of both oil and gas have severely declined.

He also mentions that the Boche "is a good sprinter."

B RITISH COLUMBIA in its mining activities is going ahead by leaps and bounds both in development and production. Mineral production for 1925 was $61,492,242 in value as compared to $48,704,- 604 in 1924, or an increase of about 26.2 per cent. This is a new record. It is the first time in the history of mining in British Columbia that we have gone over the fifty million mark. But we have got in the habit of making new records. The year 1924, with its mineral production of almost forty-nine million was a new record. And I am confident that when the mining history of 1926 is written it will be found that we have established yet another new record and that we can report another 25 per cent increase over 1925. What is the explanation? It is not only that the world is settling down, and settling up, after the war. It is not only that in the rebuilding, the refashioning in which all nations are busily engaged, the metals that come from our mines are needed. More than anything else, at least as far as we are concerned, it is because British Columbia has the resources and the fact that the province has been fortunate in recent years in finding men with the enterprise and the vision required to push ahead the labor of their development. From the ranks of our own people in Canada we have prospectors who have faith, energy and requisite knowledge. They are combing our hills season after season and they are of the type of manhood that does not know the meaning of the word quit. More and more these men are learning the importance of the guidance furnished by geological reports, and to an ever increasing extent such reports, thanks to the valuable work of the Canadian Geological Survey, covering areas little known to man, are made available to them-but it is recognized that in the opening up of our Province, containing within itself 372,000 square miles, it is essential that we should have the cooperation of our cousins on this side of the line as well as of our fellow citizens of the Dominion and of the Mother Country.

FROM the old-fashioned " grab-sample " to the modern timing- . device, which takes a machine-sample with mathematical precision, there is a wide gap which was only crossed' by many years of toil and unremitting endeavor. Even to-day, notwithstanding the advancement in the art, "grab-sampling" is still practiced-sometimes to afford the unscrupulous mine-promoter a basis for fairy-tales with which to entrap the too-gullible investor, and often by milling and smelting companies to determine the amount of moisture in custom-ores. The latter practice is almost as reprehensible as the former, and it causes more trouble and ill-feeling between seller and buyer than all other factors put together. No reputable concern to-day would think of attempting to determine by grab-sampling the amount of gold, silver, lead, or copper contained in an ore, and yet many buyers expect the miner to accept the results of grab-sampling in the determination of the amount of water contained in the ore, forgetting that accurate results are just as necessary here as in the determination of the metals, because the result determines the percentage of weight of the ore which shall be excluded and considered to have no value whatever. Samples for the determination of moisture should be taken with as great care as samples for the determination of. metallic content, and in order to avoid the extra expense of a separate operation moisture-samples should be taken from the sample-safe. As the sample reaches the sample-bin in a smaller stream and by a more circuitous route than the "reject" travels in its path to the outgoing car, it loses more moisture en route, and a constant should be added to compensate for this difference. Carefully-conducted experiments have shown that the difference in loss of moisture between the two routes does not exceed 10 per cent. in summer and 7 per cent.. in winter. For instance,

The phenomenon of retrograde solubility in metals, i.e., maximum solubility in a solid terminal phase in equilibrium with a liquid phase, has been theoretically predicted by Van aar' in his calculations of hypothetical binary phase diagrams. It was not until 1926, however, that retrograde solubility was experimentally verified in the Zn-Cd system.' Since then many sys- tems with retrograde solubility have been found, so that at present approximately fifty binary diagrams with a retrograde solidus curve are known.3 Meijering4 has critically appraised the accumulated data and has presented calculations which alloy predictions as to whether or not a solidus line will be retrograde. Interest in retrograde solubility increased when it was found that the solidus curves of germanium and silicon alloyed with a great many doping elements are retrrade. The problem was treated thermody-namically by odkinson,% d all available data on solid solutions in germanium and silicon were summarized by Trumbore.7 Although it is to be expected that intermetallic compounds will also exhibit retrograde solubility, experimental evidence is much more limited. Until now retrograde solidus curves have been reported for the compounds de,' be, Ps:" ne," SnSe," and SnS.13 All these compounds are semiconductors, and the solidus curves were usually obtained by determining the carrier concentration at room temperature of samples equilibrated at elevated temperatures and then quenched. It has been hown,'' however, that it is not always possible to quench in the equilibrium compositions from above a certain temperature. Theoretical discussions have either explicitly excluded intermetallic compounds4 or not treated them with respect to retrograde slubilit.j In the following a thermodynamic treatment of retrograde solu-

In 20 years of commercial development, nuclear reactors have demonstrated that they are a safe, dependable, and economical source of power. Operating experience with commercial power reactors has firmly established nuclear power as a practicable source of energy. For both boiling-water (BWR) and pressurized-water (PWR) reactors, performances to date have generally met design predictions. Furthermore, it has become possible to analyze and understand the nuclear, chemical, and physical behavior of this class of reactors. The United Kingdom has had similar success with gas-cooled reactors. The Experimental Boiling Water Reactor (EBWR), the first United States experimental power reactor, began operation in 1956. It proved to be capable of supplying 4500 kw (kilowatts) of power. This reactor was followed in 1957 by the Pressurized Water Reactor at Shippingport, Pa. It was the nation's first full-scale central-station nuclear power plant and the first in the world designed exclusively for the production of civilian electric power. The Shippingport reactor was originally designed to produce 60 megawatts (MW) of electricity, and it was increased to 100 MW in 1964. In 12 years of operation, this reactor generated over 4.5-million MW-hr of electricity in spite of many shutdowns for experimental alterations. By 1969, a total of 15 central-station nuclear power reactors were operable in the United States with an aggregate electrical capacity of over 4200 MW. Early in 1964, Jersey Central Power & Light Co. announced plans for constructing a 515-MW nuclear plant at Oyster Creek, N.J., to be built without government financial assistance. The company stated that a nuclear plant had been selected competitively with fossil fuel. Their economic analysis stated that the plant would generate electricity at less than 4 mills per kw-hr, competitive with coal at 200 per million Btu (British thermal units). Coal cost in 1964 for that region averaged 26.00 per million Btu. The Jersey Central report created wide interest in public-utility circles; nevertheless, no other nuclear plants were announced in 1964. However, in 1965, six nuclear plants were announced by utilities, followed by 26 in 1966, 29 in 1967, and 10 in 1968. By Sept. 30, 1969, 97 reactors were operable, being built, or planned. The cost of these, all committed by electric utilities, was estimated at about $12 billion. When constructed, they will have an electrical capacity of 72,000 MW. Structural changes in Be-Cu, Be-Ni. Be - Ag, and Be-Fc alloys pressurized in a solid medium were invesligated by resistivity measurements , X-ray diffrac lion in situ and metallogvaphic examination. Some limited tests in liquid medium were also conducted. Good correlation was oblained between diauges of slope of relative resistance us pressure and changes in diffraction pattern. Metallographic examination rez:ealed that the copper, silver, and nickel alloys lwiu heauily due to the applicalion of pressure at room temperature. Using polarized light technique {1012}, {1011}, and possible {1010} twinning planes were identified. At eleuated temperature twinning was moslly confined to the {1012} planes. Although twin-ning could be promoted by application of hydroslutic pvessure (liquid medium), it was strongly enhanced by the pvesence of a nonhydvostatic shear component due to pressurizalion in a solid medium. It was further obserced that a decrease in grain size inlnibiled twinnitzg activily. A great deal of effort has been expended in recent years to render beryllium useful for structural applications. Efforts were concentrated towards a possible phase change and to promoting other than basal deformation modes. Quenching experiments to obtain the high-temperature bcc phase have failed,' nor were alloying additions successful in improving ductility of the brittle hcp phase.2 Herman et a1.3 have reported a new {1011} twinning mode in a Be-4.4 wt pct Cu alloy oriented for a C axis compression sustaining loads to 440,000 psi. A new approach using high-pressure techniques was undertaken at Curtiss-Wright, Wright Aeronautical Division Laboratories. Marder4 reported a 25 pct decrease in relative resistance of commercially pure beryllium at 92 kbar. He proposed that this discontinuity corresponded to the bcc phase found at high temperature; however, X-ray diffraction in silu did not confirm a phase transition.5 contre6 has recently shown that the bcc transition in pure beryllium is lowered to 800°C at 80 kbar accompanied by a 50 pct increase in relative resistance. The purpose of this paper is to report on one phase of an investigation of the effects of high pressures and temperatures in beryllium alloys, namely, twinning behavior in Be-Ni, Be-Cu, Be-Fe, and Be-Ag alloys pressurized to nearly 100 kbar and temperatures up to 200°C. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Material was obtained from Nuclear Metals, Inc., in the form of a 1.5-mm-diam wire extruded in stainless-steel cladding at 1600° F. Nominal composition of the alloys is listed in Table I, and the major impurities are are given in Table 11. Pressures to 100 kbar* were ob- tained using a National Bureau of Standards type 100/400 ton tetrahedral unit supplied by Barogenics, Inc. This type of apparatus contains a retaining sleeve with a conically tapered internal surface and four pressure-intensifying anvil assemblies with tungsten carbide tips.
