Numerous designs of linings and accessories, including dams, lifters, and heat exchangers, contribute greatly to kiln efficiencies. Greater conductivity is achieved with basic brick than with fireclay and high-alumina refractories, depending largely upon the use of steel plates in radial joints between adjacent brick to increase heat transfer through the lining. Refractory lifters expose all portions of the load to radiant or convective heat and raise some portions to higher temperatures by cascading the load down through the path of the hot gases.

FIVE days, extending from Monday, Feb. 18 to Friday, Feb. 22, inclusive, will be required for the annual meeting this year. The first fours days will be devoted to reading and discussion of papers, general and committee business meetings, two lectures, luncheons, dinners and all the pleasures of a big, general reunion. The fifth day will be given over to an all-day excursion for both men and women by special train to West Point, in celebration of the birthday of the first President of the United States. Washington having been an engineer and now after one hundred and thirty-one years the country having selected as President another engineer in the person of Herbert Hoover, our own past president and honorary member, it is proposed to celebrate with a good old-fashioned picnic and inspect the school. The authorities at the Military Academy have undertaken to welcome the engineers and do whatever they may to make our pilgrimage notable. Other social features planned for the week are numerous. Luncheon will be served as usual at the building each day of the meeting to all members and guests. This year a very nominal charge will be made, primarily to overcome deficits due to irregular attendance. Monday noon, the Non-metallic Minerals Committee will lunch at the Engineers' Club and in the evening the Milling Methods Committee will dine there. The Annual Smoker will be held at Hotel Astor after dinner. Professional entertainment of high order is promised, but not too much to interfere with the numerous group reunions that characterize this func- tion.

This year the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers has chosen to give me its Robert H. Richards Award, a distinction which is widely regarded as the highest honor in the field of mineral engineering. I am deeply moved by this tribute, which suggests not only regard for my service to the profession but also the affectionate esteem of my fellow mineral engineers. You have made me happy at the prospect of the permanent association of my name with that of Robert Hallowell Richards and of the distinguished recipients of the award, Arthur Fay Taggart, Frank R. Milliken, John F. Myers, Edward William Englemann, C. Harry Benedict, Edward W. Davis and Arthur W. Fahrenwald. I wish to thank you all for an honor so generously bestowed. Professor Richards is known to us all as a legendary figure, and we can read about him in the Richards Memorial Volume of our Transactions. Some of us have even had the good fortune of knowing him. I count myself among those lucky few. In its intangible attributes the Award recalls those things for which Professor Richards stood: for Science in Art, for thoroughness, for meticulous accuracy, for bold imaginativeness, most of all for professional integrity. Now, as in his day, these attributes are central to an engineer's creed. They are appropriately needed in a formulation of a definition of the mineral engineering profession.

TO present some idea of the magnitude of the gold-mining industry of Canada and the world, the records of 106 gold-mining companies currently paying dividends have been studied. Forty of these are in Canada, and 37 on the Rand in South Africa, these being all the straight gold-mining companies that paid dividends in the two areas in 1938. None of the base-metal companies that produce gold as a by- product, or even as a major fraction of the value of their total product, have beezl included. The kinetics of acidified thiourea leaching of pyrite concentrate was investigated at temperature ranging form 20 °C to a 60 °C. The effect of various parameters on the dissolution rates are discussed. The gold extraction was found to be zero and first orders with respect to Fe (111) and thiourea concentration, respectively. The order of the reaction with respect to sulfuric acid was found to be zero. The activation energy was determined from the Arrhenius plot as 2,039 kcal mole -1 (for a freshly prepared acidic solution containing Fe (111) as the oxidant and at 800 rpm stirring speed. This relatively low activation energy value suggests that the gold extraction is controlled by a-physical phenomenon. Under optimum conditions, more than 90% of gold has been dissolved in about 30 min. and 95% in 60 min. Attempt to recover gold from thiourea solution using active carbon is also discussed.

It has been shown that grain-boundary migration during high-temperature creep can reduce or even prevent the formation of intercrystalline voids, giving a considerable increase in ductility.' A similar observation has been made in a recent investigation of the creep properties of various grades of nickel and nickel alloys. The results can be illustrated by the observations made on: a) Pure vacuum-cast nickel (99.993 pct Ni) b) Impure vacuum-cast nickel (99.97 pct Ni) c) Pure nickel containing internal voids (produced by a process of intering). d) A substitutional solid solution alloy of pure nickel containing 1.16 pct Sn. All the materials were given a high-temperature anneal (>850°C) to produce a stable grain size of 7 to 10 grains per linear mm. The apparatus and techniques used to obtain the present results have been described elsewhere.' In this series, grain growth was observed only in the highest-purity, vacuum-cast metal. Thus we may consider that in the other materials grain-boundary migration was prevented by either preexisting voids or solute atoms. Faced with a severe disposal problem of their fines from a coal mine in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains of extreme eastern Kentucky, Eastern Coal Corporation has built a special plant to pelletize the fines into high quality coal pellets meeting the requirements of the metallurgical market. These low-ash, low-sulfur pellets measuring 3/4 x 3/8 in. contain less than 1.5% moisture and have the same stability as raw coal of the same size. Although Eastern Coal is mining 6000 tpd, the company had, until recently, no provision to recover the fine coal which was included with the plant effluent pumped to a 12-acre refuse pond. The pond, impounded behind the coarse refuse dump, rose 15 ft last year and obviously no pond can stand many years at this rate. Limited pond space in this rugged area of steep hills and narrow valleys dictated a revised disposal method.

D. K. Deardorff and Haruo Kato (U. S. Bureau of Mines)—We wish to refute the 1875" 20°C value that Giessen, et al., report as the transformation temperature of hafnium. Although these authors state that their work along this line will be reported later, we can't leave their value undiscussed, for we believe it to be 125°C too high. Our value of 1750° 20°C, which the authors mention, has been substantiated in our laboratories by the use of three other methods. The first method of substantiation was by heating and cooling curves using a hafnium/tungsten thermocouple, the couple having first been calibrated against a t/Pt-10 pct Rh couple. The second method was by quenching and metallography of dilute Hf-Ta alloys. The third cussion, it may be pointed out that the observations of Rogers referred to large unidirectional strains where the internal cracks or voids appeared only after a strain of 32 pct or more. On the contrary the internal fissures observed, as a result of fatigue cycling, occurred for a total extension of some 5 pct and furthermore followed the directions of the slip zones. Finally, it is not our contention, as implied in Dr. Alden's last paragraph, that the tensile stress is an important factor in crack propagation. Indeed, in connection with the reference to the companion report, special note is made of the fact that "Deformation was apparently concentrated in grains which have a slip plane nearly perpendicular to the specimen axis and thus near the plane of maximum applied shear." This dependence of the growth of fissures on the orientation of the slip planes with respect to the direction of maximum applied shear is clearly shown in work on the torsional cycling of single crystals which has been submitted for publication. method was by heating and cooling curves with W/W-26 pct Re thermocouple. Counting the original resistometric method, four different methods have yielded 1750" 20°C as the transformation temperature of hafnium. All our work on determination of the hafnium transformation temperature has shown that the specimen under test must be quickly heated to and through the transformation temperature if the lowest possible transformation value is to be determined; otherwise a higher value not representative of pure hafnium will result. Speed was emphasized in all methods. In our resistometric work the corresponding voltage, amperage, and temperature readings were taken quickly and the transformation temperature was usually reached within 5 min total heating time. In the thermal analysis work involving Hf/W or W/W-26 pct Re thermocouples the transformation temperature was attained within three minutes total heating time, this time being less because the two variables were

THIS investigation was carried on by means of models and the applica-tion of the principles of similitude to determine the effects of props, props and cribs and sand filling in longwall mining. The geologic structure and rate of face retreat were kept constant and the only change introduced was in the method of support. It is not felt necessary to repeat a description of apparatus, or to explain the fact that a scalar model made in all parts of the same material as the prototype will behave similarly to the prototype when rotated at speeds such that the centrifugal force is as many times the gravitational force as the prototype dimension is a similar linear model dimensions. The reader is referred to earlier papers1,2 for further information regarding these statements. All models were made of sandstone and were as in Fig. 6. They are composed of a 3/16-in. ore body bed A, overlain by a 3/16-in- bed B, a 3/8-in, bed C and two 1/8 -in. beds D and E. The model was rotated at ±2350 r.p.m. equivalent to a model ratio of 1268. It was worked back 1/4 in. at a time before being replaced in the centrifuge and again rotated. Table 1 gives model and prototype dimensions occurring in this discussion, the prototype dimensions being 1268 times the model dimensions. Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 were taken while the model was rotating at 2350 r.p.m. One was taken for each face retreat of 26.4 ft., but for obvious ,reasons all are not presented. Fig. 1 (A-E) shows the behavior of this type of structure with face retreats of 26.4 ft, and no artificial support. Fig. 2(A-E) shows the behavior of this type of structure where breaker and face props were used. PURSUANT to a recommendation made by the Section delegates at their conference at the Annual Meeting of the A.I.M.E. last February, the Directors, at their meeting on March 15, 1944, appointed a committee charged with the duty of investigating the present status of licensing and registration of engineers, and to make a report on the whole subject for the information of the mining fraternity. The committee consisted of E. W. Ellis, chairman, H. D. Keiser, Henry T. Mudd, J. J. Croston, and Simon Strauss. Messrs. Keiser and Strauss were unable to assist in the work of the committee, and Mr. Mudd was forced to resign in July, his place being taken by A. F. Greaves-Walker. Able assistance was given the committee by T. Keith Legare, executive secretary of the National Council of State Boards of Engineering Examiners, and by Ed. ward Larson, executive secretary of the National Society of Professional Engineers. The accompanying somewhat condensed version of the report of Mr. Ellis's committee, dated Oct. 15, 1944, is confined to facts rather than to recommendations. The "Model Law" to which reference is made was first drafted by repre¬sentatives of six national engineering societies in 1911. It has since been amended many times, the latest version dated June 1943 is recommended to the State Licensing Boards as a pattern for formulating or amending state laws. A copy of the "Model Law" in pamphlet form will be sent to any member on request from A.I.M.E. headquarters while the supply lasts. The report:

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) AT the Pittsburg meeting of the Institute, May, 1879, I made the first announcement in America of the results obtained by Sidney Gilchrist Thomas and Percy C. Gilchrist, ill their efforts to eliminate phosphorus in the manufacture of steel in the Bessemer converter and the open-hearth furnace.1 The first published statement in an American newspaper was a reprint of the first Thomas-Gilchrist paper, 2 which I sent to J. C. Bayles, at that time the editor. At the suggestion of many friends who were present at the Pittsburg meeting, and others who are cognizant of the beginnings of the process in the United States, and for the information of the younger generation of the iron and steel fraternity, I have thought it eminently proper that the history of the process in detail should be given where I made the first announcement and where the process has had its largest development. During my residence in England, from April, 1873, to February, 1879, and as a member of the Iron and Steel Institute since 1874, I was present at many of its meetings during those years. At nearly -every meeting the burden of discussion was the question of the use of pig-iron containing phosphorus in the. manufacture of steel by the Bessemer or the open-hearth process. THE following paragraphs, constituting the concluding portion of the Annual Report of the Council for 1903, have been withheld from publication until now, in order to make them as accurate and complete as possible. They will be published in Volume XXXV. of the Transactions in their proper place at the end of the said Annual Report. Franklin Ballou was born in Pittsburg, Pa., May 29, 1845. He was the son of an old resident, Arthur Ballou, a manufacturer and wholesale dealer in vinegar. In early youth Franklin attended the Western University of Pittsburg, but left school at the age of 16 to become book-keeper for his father, upon whose retirement from business, in 1868, he associated himself with Walter C. Childs, of Pittsburg, in the manufac¬ture of furnace-grates and asbestos-cement for blast-furnaces. This firm was known as W. C. Childs & Co., and did a success¬ful business for several years. In 1869 Mr. Ballou married Miss May S. Wilson, daughter of Judge Wilson, of Lewistown, Pa. In 1876 he spent several months traveling in the West and studying the mining industry, which greatly interested him. In consequence of this journey, he wound up his business in Pittsburg and removed in 1877 to Georgetown, Colo., where for several years he conducted a sampling-works, and built up an extensive business as an agent for the sale of ores, besides engaging to some extent in mining enterprises. , It is said that he controlled at one time about one-eighth of the output of the Leadville mines. In the early 80's, he became Vice-President and General Manager of the Bimetallic Smelter at Leadville, of which Mr. David H. Moflat was the principal owner. This was practically the first successful demonstration of pyritic smelting in Colorado. Upon the sale of the works in 1897 to the American Smelting and Refining Co., Mr. Ballou retired

INTRODUCTION The Bullmoose Coal Project is part of a major development in northeastern British Columbia which comprises a new rail line, a new townsite, powerline, highway, the upgrading of the Canadian National Railway's main line, a new coal port at Prince Rupert and two new coal mines, the Bullmoose mine and the Quintette mine. The total investment by all parties is estimated to be in excess of $2.6 billion and made up approximately as follows : [Table No. 1 $ Millions - Quintette Coal Limited 950 Teck-Bullmoose Coal Inc. 275 Canadian National Railway Company 800 6 British Columbia Railway Company Port at Prince Rupert 280 Townsite, Roads 6- Power ] The new infrastructure is intended to serve not only the Bullmoose and Quintette coal projects but also eventually a number of other coal properties in northeastern British Columbia. The Bullmoose project is structured on a joint venture basis as follows : [Table No. 2 Teck Corporation 51% Lornex Mining Corporation Ltd. 39% Nissho Iwai Coal Development 1 0% (Canada) Ltd. -- 100% ] The mine has a capacity of 2.3 million tonnes of clean coal per year. In the initial years 1.7 million tonnes will be metallurgical coal and 0.6 million tonnes thermal coal. After the first three years of operations the annual production of metallurgical coal will increase to an average of approximately 2.1 million tonnes and the production of thermal coal will decrease to an average of approximately 0.2 million tonnes. At this level of 2.3 million tonnes annual production, the Bullmoose mine has sufficient reserves for at least 26 years of production. History Brameda Resources Ltd. commenced coal exploration in the Bullmoose-Sukunka area in 1969. Teck obtained an option on the Bullmoose coal licences in 1970 and started surface exploration and diamond drilling in 1971. Teck earned a 50% interest in the property, and thereafter expenses were jointly financed by Teck and Brameda. In 1981 Brameda merged with Teck making Teck the sole owner. The initial phase of the exploration program, which was completed in 1975, included 7,200 meters of diamond drilling in 35 holes. During 1976 and 1977, detailed exploration and test work were carried out on the South Fork and West Fork areas where multiple seams close to surfaces indicated the potential for large tonnages of strippable coal. In those two years, work included road construction, detailed mapping and trenching to outline the coal seam traces at the surface, 6,300 meters of diamond drilling in 80 holes, and 300 meters of underground bulk sampling from seven adits. Washability tests and analysis work were carried out on the drill cores and adit samples, and pilot plant washability studies were undertaken. In 1978 and 1979 Teck engineers prepared open pit mining plans and production schedules and Kaiser Engineering was retained to prepare a layout of the plant preparation facility. A feasibility study prepared by Teck's engineering group in January 1982 was the base document used by the Lenders in assessing the technical and economic viability of the project. Property Location The property lies some 650 kilometers northeast of Vancouver, and 87 kilometers south by road from the village of Chetwynd. The Sukunka property (British Petroleum) adjoins to the north, the Mount Spieker property (Ranger Oil Option) adjoins to the east, and the Quintette property is located to the southeast.

MANY methods for the determination of gold or silver, or both, in cyanide solutions have been published, which with care in manipulation, and modification in some cases, will give results that are satisfactory. It is possible to classify or group these methods as follows: 1. Evaporating the solution in a porcelain or agate-ware dish containing litharge,1 or in a "boat" made of lead foil. 2. Forming a lead sponge containing the precious metals by means of zinc shavings,2 zinc dust,3 or a piece of aluminum.4 3. Decomposing the cyanide solution with an acid and precipitating the precious metals by the use of one or a combination of some of the following: Copper sulphate,5 sodium sulphite,6 hydrogen sulphide,7 cement copper.8 4. Precipitating the silver by zinc dust held in a Hooch crucible and determination with a standard solution of sulphocyanate.9 5. Electrolysis.10 6. Colorimetry.11

The rich deposits of magnetic iron-ore in the Highlands of northern New Jersey attracted the attention of iron-workers at the time of the earliest settlements in that region. The outcrops of the oreshoots at the Dickerson mine, at Mount Hope, and at Hibernia, in Morris county, and at Ringwood, in Passaic count,y, which were doubtless such as would lead to discovery, location and development of nearly all the large iron-mines in that part of the State, appear to have had their beginnings where the ore cropped out on the surface or where it was scarcely concealed by a thin mantle of earth. Five hot spring areas of the western United States show evidences of present day deposition of HgS; two also show evidences of accompanying Sb2S3 deposition. Sulfide minerals are depositing at or near the surface from hot waters that differ for each spring ai:ea in amount and kinds of dissolved matter. All the springs contain dissolved substances that act as buffering agents and that cause increased alkalinity with increasing temperature. Transport of Sb2S3 is possible in H2O and in boron and sulfide solutions. Increasing alkalinity and temperature enhance stibnite solubility. Quantitatively important transport of HgS appears restricted to alkaline sulfide solutions that contain HgS2=. Elemental mercury probably forms in deep hot waters because HgS breaks down into mercury and sulfur above 200°C, and free S is removed by reaction with water. Elemental mercury should accompany HgS2= in solutions that were at 200°C or higher. Cinnabar deposits from saturated alkaline sulfide solutions because of combinations of temperature decrease, dilution, oxidation, and reactions with wall rock: Amedee Hot Springs, Boiling Springs, and Coso Hot Springs are areas in which HgS is the only sulfide deposited. Hot waters at Amedee and Boiling Springs are supersaturated with HgS or transport colloidal HgS. Steamboat Springs waters deposit mainly silica and stibnite, but they have deposited HgS recently. Sulphur Bank waters deposit mostly stibnite and some HgS. The hot-spring waters of all springs represent highly modified deep water. Field and laboratory studies support the concept of transport of HgS in moderately alkaline sulfide solutions as HgS2=. Fluctuating deposition of stibnite and cinnabar reflects availability of sulfide or variations in deep-source HgS and Sb,S,. Silica and HgS dissolve mutually in alkaline sulfide solutions, and cinnabar and quartz would be expected to deposit simultaneously. Free mercury given off by hot-spring waters would impregnate country rocks.
