THE previous determinations of the solvus of tin in solid lead disagree with one another by as much as 40°C or almost 10 at. pct. Even determinations that appear to be careful differ considerably in both the solubility and its temperature coefficient. Recent kinetic workl -3 on the rate of precipitation of tin from lead-tin alloys and thermodynamic work4 on the heat of solution of tin in lead have given some insight into the time necessary to reach equilibrium in this system. As this time is longer than that used in almost all previous determinations of the solvus, these determinations are questionable. Since the interpretation of recent kinetic results requires accurate values of the equilibrium solubility the present work was undertaken. DISCUSSION OF PREVIOUS RESULTS The methods used in previous studies may be placed into three classes: 1) Several alloys covering a range of compositions are allowed to reach "equilibrium" at a certain temperature.5-7 Some property, such as the X-ray lattice parameter of the lead-rich phase or the re- sistivity of the alloy, is then measured as a function of composition. The solubility limit for that temperature is taken to be that composition at which a discontinuity in the property occurs. However, the recent kinetic work has shown that tin precipitates in two stages. The first stage is rapid but leaves the lead still supersaturated. The second stage is very slow, and it seems from the equilibration times quoted by the investigators of the solvus that the end of the first stage of precipitation was usually mistaken for equilibrium. This is especially true at temperatures below 100°C where the first reaction is still quite rapid (from minutes to months), but where the second stage is so slow that very long holding times are required to reach equilibrium. Alternatively micrographic work8 on several alloys of different compositions seems to have given good results if done carefully. 2) The beginning of precipitation in a homogenized alloy is measured as it cools slowly8-10. Since reactions in solids undercool easily, such determinations will always give too low a temperature for the solvus. 3) Some property of an alloy is measured as a function of temperature while the alloy is above the solvus.5,9,11 The range of temperature can usually be extended slightly into the two phase region. Then the alloy is precipitated at a much lower temperature and slowly reheated. The solvus is taken to be the lowest temperature where the property of the reheated alloy is equal to that previously determined for the homogeneous alloy. Usually one also expects a discontinuity at the solvus in the temperature variation of the property for the reheated alloy. The difficulty in this method is the sluggishness of the dissolution process, and this method may give too high a solvus temperature. EXPERIMENTAL The phase boundary or solvus temperature was determined by a modification of method 3 for a series of chemically analyzed high-purity alloys, ranging from 5.1 to 26.4 at. pct Sn. The resistance, as a function of temperature, of a sample of homogenized alloy (which could easily be undercooled) was compared with the equilibrium resistance which that alloy sample attained after precipitation at room temperature followed by long isothermal anneals at various temperatures. Before each anneal the sample was rehomogenized and reprecipitated. The solvus temperature could be located to within 1°C as the intersection of the resistance vs temperature curves for the homogenized and equilibrium alloys. No attempt was made to locate the phase boundary more accurately since the limiting factor was the precision with which the alloys could be analyzed. This precision was ±0.1 wt pct Sn and corresponds to an error of 1 deg in temperature. This use of isothermal anneals differs from some of the previous investigations in which method 3 was used with baths of slowly rising temperatures. IN view of the approaching visit to Japan and the Imperial Steel Works at Yawata by our members, the following notes on present conditions in the industry there will be of interest. The data were collected by the representatives of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce in Japan and are furnished here through the courtesy of the Department. In connection with the proposed suspension of both new and old Government undertakings and the general depression in building, which is expected to result from the retrenchment policy of the Government, some cuts in iron and steel prices have been made by dealers. It is expected that the Yawata Steel Works may reduce its round bar prices for November delivery by 1 yen.

Considerable discussion took place at the June 18th Board of Directors Meeting concerning ways the Petroleum Branch office in Dallas could better serve its members and the essentially Petroleum Local Sections, namely the Delta, East Texas, Gulf Coast, Kansas, Mid-Continent, North Texas, Oklahoma City, Permian Basin, and Southwest Texas. The question of whether decentralization strengthens or weakens the Institute was debated, particularly as to what services could be advantageously decentralized and how both offices could keep informed on their mutual problems. Among other things, it was decided that an Auxiliary Admissions Committee could screen applications from Petroleum members before final action by the National Admissions Committee in New York. Finally it was voted, "That all administrative matters that can be properly delegated to a Branch organization may be so delegated". Final details were approved at the July 16th meeting of the Executive and Finance Committees.

A short time ago I paid a visit to the alluvial gold fields on the tributaries of the Chaudiere River in Beauce County, Quebec, in company with A. 0. Dufresne, late manager of the Champs d'or Rigaud-Veaudreuil, and now assistant to the Superintendent of Mines of the Province of Quebec. As the conditions under which the gold occurs in this district are not very generally known, and present some interesting features, a brief description of these conditions, and a consideration of the causes which gave rise to them, may be of interest to other mining engineers. During the latter half of last century the country was visited by many mining engineers and geologists, and many references to it may be found in the reports of the Geological Survey of Canada between 1848 and 1911. The most important of these are by J. A. Dresser and J. Keele and the late Robert Chalmers. The Department of Colonization and Mines of the Province of Quebec also published a report with map on the district by J. Obalski. From the earliest times the valley of the Chaudiere River formed one of the main avenues of approach to the St. Lawrence in the vicinity of Quebec from the country to the south as far as the seaboard of the States of Maine and Massachusetts. The Indians had a well-known trail along the banks of the stream, and armed troops and foraging parties constantly moved backward and forward along it between Quebec and New England in those insecure times before the ceding of Canada to Great Britain. Even yet the natural advantages of this old military route are recognized, and the government of the Province of Quebec has now under construction along it a magnificent highway from Quebec to the International Boundary Line, which is to form part of a through highway from that city to Boston. The land along the valley is naturally well suited for agriculture, and about the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth centuries farmers began to go back from the St. Lawrence, and to occupy the higher lands along the upper portions of the Chaudiere Valley. This settlement has gone on until now the country is peopled with a prosperous agricultural population.

Circle No. 3 Portable pH Meter A low priced battery-operated portable pH meter of utmost simplicity announced by the Photovolt Corp. uses only 3 ordinary radio batteries which give over 2000 hours of service. Accuracy of 0.03 pH is claimed by the manufacturer for the model 125, and AC power line supply is available. Circle No. 4

A fatigue study in completely reversed axial tension-compression has been perforried on high-purity titanium and on three high-purity alloys of titanium. The alloys each contain approxi7nately 0.75 at. pct of a single interstitial element; carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, respectivley. The results corroborate a previously published theory which proposed that strain aging under alternating stress was responsible for the fatigue limit behavior of certain alloys. The present data indicate that in these alloys an increasing strain-talline aging effect under alternating stress is provided by oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen, respectively. CURRENT research on the nature of the fatigue limit in metals suggests that the presence of a fatigue limit in metallic materials is a manifestation of strain aging that occurs under alternating stress.lm5 A comprehensive theoretical model based on the above hypothesis has been developed to explain the existence of a fatigue limit.' This model also provides increased insight into several other fatigue phenomena as under stressing, overstressing, and coaxing effects. The theory, as well, provides equal understanding for those cases where no real fatigue limit is observed. Briefly, this theory assumes that the S-N curve for a pure metal is a smooth function of the applied stress, and the effect of adding an element that is soluble (or forms a precipitate) in the pure metal is simply to shift the S-N curve to the right. If the added element confers the power to strain age, the result is a further shift of the S-N curve, this time upward and to the right. Since strain aging is not expected to be a strong function of stress, and since damage per cycle is known to be quite stress dependent, it is to be expected that there will be some limiting lower stress at which the strengthening due to strain aging will balance the damage due to crack propagation. This stress is the fatigue limit. The position of the fatigue-limit knee was thought to be a function of the magnitude of the strain-aging effect on both the finite and infinite life portions of the S-N curve. Although the strain aging hypothesis seems to be reasonably valid for bcc materials,2'6 it needed to be tested for both fcc and cph metals. This report is the first of a series concerning the fatigue-limit behavior of titanium with varying amounts of the interstitial solutes (C, N,, and 4) that are known to cause static strain aging in titanium. Yield-point effects have been reported for polycrys-talline high-purity titanium alloys containing either carbon, nitrogen, or oxygen.7'9 These effects were observed at testing temperatures in the range 100 to 300'. In addition yield-point and strain-aging effects have been reported for single crystals of titanium containing 0.1 wt pct C plus N.' These yield points were observed over a wide temperature range, but no room-temperature aging occurred. Aging at 180' was required to cause the return of the yield point. The magnitude of the yield phenomena in titanium containing interstitials is not expected to be as large as is observed in bcc metals because of several factors. Titanium has a very high chemical affinity for oxygen and nitrogen. The thermodynamic stability of solutions of oxygen or nitrogen in titanium is recognized. Lattice parameter measurements of titanium containing arbon, oxygen,1° or nitrogen" show that the "c" parameter is expanded more than the "a" parameter, but that up to about 2 wt pct this results in an insignificant change of the axial ratio 'c/a." Ehrlich" has shown that the sites occupied by interstitial atoms in titanium are spherically symmetrical and therefore a lattice expansion, at a constant c/a ratio, results in a simple dilation of the interstitial site. Such a dilation involving no shear has been shown to react only with edge components of dislocations.13 This causes only a weak pinning action. Shear stresses would be anticipated locally when only one of the two interstitial positions was occupied. The carbon atom will cause a symmetrical distortion of the lattice whereas the oxygen and nitrogen atoms have, in addition, the previously mentioned chemical affinity of titanium for these elements. These factors will result in a considerably smaller reduction of free energy upon the association of interstitial atoms with dislocations, and therefore a much weaker pinning than has been observed for the bcc metals. These considerations would lead to the hypothesis that of the interstitial elements considered here carbon would cause the strongest pinning effect in titanium where the amount of interstitial in solution is constant. This hypothesis will be borne out in the analysis of the present results.

Just three years after researchers announced its development, Dravo is putting the finishing touches on a new $60-million Thiosorhic lime mine/kiln complex near Maysville, Ky. Electric utilities in western Pennsylvania and Ohio have already signed long-term contracts for over three-quarters of the projected 907 000-t/v (1-million-stpy) production. Thiosorbic lime, a flue gas desulfurizing agent, proved in industrial testing that at high emission levels (greater than 3000ppm SO2) it could be twice as effective in SO2 capture as conventional lime, while eliminating the major problem of scaling and plugging of scrubber equipment.

Copper smelters of various kinds have operated in the Morenci district since 1872, but all have been abandoned with the exception of the present Morenci Smelter of Phelps Dodge Corporation, which was completed in 1942. During the five-year period starting in 1937, the Morenci ore body was prepared for open pit mining, pilot mill test work was carried out, and a complete reduction works, of which the Smelter is a part, was designed and erected. Actual construction work on the Morenci Smelter was started in the fall of 1940, and warming up of the units began on April 1, 1942. Charging of the reverberatory furnaces commenced on April 18, 1942, and the first anode copper was produced on April 26, 1942. The smelter was originally designed to handle the production of the Morenci Concentrator on a 25,000 ton per day program, but by the time the smelter was in operation, plans were already underway to increase the smelter capacity to handle the production of the concentrator which was being enlarged to 45,000 tons a day capacity as a war-time necessity. This extension to the smelter was completed and the new units were put in operation toward the beginning of 1944. The original smelter consisted of a smelter crushing plant, bedding plant, two direct-smelting reverberatory furnaces with two waste-heat boilers on each furnace, three converters, an anode department, a stack, and all of the usual accessory smelting equipment. The extension consisted of increasing the bedding plant from three to five beds, the reverberatory department from two to four furnaces, and from four to eight waste-heat boilers, and the converter department from three to six converters. A third converter aisle crane was added and additions were made to the flue systems and conveyor systems throughout the smelter; but no change was made in the smelter crushing plant or the anode department, and the same stack was used for all additional Smelter units. A blister casting machine was installed at that time in the south end of the converter aisle to handle excess and emergency production above the capacity of the anode department and in 1947 a converter aisle skull breaker and a lime burning plant were added as the final units for a complete plant. The choice of direct smelting over calcine smelting for the Morenci Smelter was made after careful study by members of the Western organization of Phelps Dodge Corporation and after test runs on direct smelting of Morenci concentrate had been made at the Douglas Smelter of Phelps Dodge Corporation. The Morenci furnace charge is made up of comparatively high grade concentrate with no ores of smelting grade available and with only flux, a small amount of copper precipitate and the usual amount of smelter secondaries to be smelted with the concentrate. The simplicity of direct smelting for this charge and the large amount of waste-heat steam available from direct smelting operations were factors influencing the decision to adopt direct smelting for Morenci. The design of the Morenci Smelter and the type of units selected followed best experience at the Douglas Smelter of Phelps Dodge Corporation. A description of the original smelter before operations started was given in an article in the May 1942 issue of Mining and Metallurgy. The purpose of the present article is to describe the enlarged Morenci Smelter, with a discussion of metallurgy and operating practice and to show tabulations of operating and metallurgical results obtained. Because of beginning operations during the early years of World War 11, many problems caused by labor shortage were encountered, but no major difficulties developed in starting the new plant. However, because of labor shortage, full scale Smelter production was not reached until the fall of 1946. Fig 1 shows a general plan of the Morenci Reduction Works. The arrangement of the smelter equipment is shown in Fig 2, a sectional view of the smelter is shown in Fig 3, and the smelter flow sheet is shown in Fig 4. Metallurgy The metallurgy of direct smelting, being more or less fixed by the character of the charge, is not subject to the control available in calcine smelting. Slags may be modified by the addition of suitable fluxes, but the grade of the matte is determined almost entirely by the iron:copper ratio of the concentrate. The direct smelting operation involves distributing the wet concentrate along the sidewalls and in the bath of a reverberatory furnace by means of some suitable feeding device and raising the temperature of the charge so that first the moisture is driven off, then the first-atom sulphur is eliminated, and finally the sulphide portion of the charge melts and runs into the bath, carrying with it the non-sulphide portion which has been partially fluxed to form a suitable slag. The fusion of the non-sulphide portion is completed by contact with the irony converter slag which is regularly being poured into the reverberatory furnace. The smelting rate of the charge is influenced by the mineralogi-cal composition of the sulphide portion of the concentrate and by the composition and amount of the non-sulphide portion including the fluxes added. The copper in Morenci concentrate is chiefly in the form of chalcocite, intimately associated with pyrite, and non-sulphide content is very low so that

The Ducktown copper-mines are located in the southeast corner of Tennessee. The name Ducktown was originally given to a district occupying the southeast corner of Polk county, which in turn occupies the southeast corner of the State. Fig. 1 is a map of the vicinity of Ducktown, taken from the topographical surveys of the United States Geological Survey. The Ducktown district is bounded on the east by Cherokee county, North Carolina (the boundary-line between the two States running here a little east of north along the western slope of Pack mountain), and on the west by the eastern foot-hills of Little Frog mountain. On the north, Stansbury mountain, really a chain of low mountains or hills, forms the dividing-line between Ducktown and Turtletown districts. On the south, the Ducktown district extends beyond the Ocoee river to the Georgia State line.. This line, in going west, gradually recedes southwards from that river into the foot-hills of Big Frog mountain, the highest mountain of the neighborhood, which rises about 4300 feet above sea-level, while the surface of the Ocoee river, where it leaves the Ducktown district, is less than 1500 feet above sea-level. It will be seen from this description, and from a study of the map, that the Ducktown district occupies the northern part of a kind of basin, bounded on the east by Pack mountain and on the west by Little and Big Frog mountains.
