Employees and dollars are necessary to all enterprises and any force, such as fire, which destroys either, can bring very serious consequences, including business failure. Since everyone acknowledges the necessity of conserving human life, we will devote most of our paper to the economic factors involved. A coal-mine fire is considerably more difficult to combat than a fire in a surface building because of the combustible surroundings in the mine, the explosive gases emitted from the coal, the suspension of explosive dust when mine timbers burn and the unsupported roof falls, the limited space in which approach to the fire can be made, and the limited avenues of escape. A survey of coal-mine-fire protection indicated that a rather low value was being placed on property and equipment. This prompted comparison with other industries. The comments made in this comparison are not intended as an indictment of the coal industry, since we do have mines that are well protected against fire, but the comments on conditions at the mines visited are factual and may help others to improve similar conditions. SURVEY PROCEDURES Plants of the steel, aluminum, rubber, chemical, and petroleum industries were surveyed, and all facets of the fire-protection scheme were covered. The industrial plant invariably had four times as much water readily available for instant use than the mine. In many mines where water is available, no equipment for applying it is provided, such as hose, nozzles, and adapters, so that time is lost in collecting this equipment. (See Table I.) EXTINGUISHERS Many more and generally larger portable extinpishers are available at the plant as compared to the mine. The extinguishers are generally placed nearer to sources of danger. In addition, respiratory protective equipment is always available at strategic points in plants but only in a few mines. (See Figs. 1 and Table 11) INSPECTING AND TESTING EQUIPMENT Plant water facilities are checked weekly and flushed at 6-month intervals, and hose is pressure-tested at least yearly; some mines check water yearly, but hose is not tested unless used. Fire extinguishers are inspected weekly in plants and completely overhauled yearly; one mine had monthly checks and overhauls only after use. FIRE BRIGADES AND TRAINING Every plant had designated fire-fighters and some complete full-time brigades; at one mine a chief mechanic was designated as being in charge of fires, and other depended entirely upon officials who might not be familiar with the equipment. COST OF FIRES AND PERCENTAGE OF CAPITAL INVESTMENT IN FIRE PROTECTION The direct cost of recent mine fires ranged from $128,000 to $240,000; indirect costs, such as lost tonnage, idled equipment, lost orders, and the like might run the cost to over $500,000. (See Figs. 2 and 3).

THE brass-rolling industry has not had a great deal of experience with antimony in its product. There have been some recent excursions with antimony as a corrosion inhibitor in tubes, but in sheet brass it has been regarded with apprehension and generally avoided. This is not to say that [ ] contaminations have never occurred, and probably a great many brass mill men have had their own ideas on the effect of such contamination. Our own views were based upon certain experiences some years ago with strip castings that split lengthwise in the early stages of rolling. The nature of this splitting is shown in Fig. I, from a photograph taken in 1922 as a record of 20 bars of 65-35 common brass made with an antimonial brand of copper. These bars were cast 6 ¾ in. wide by 1 in. thick by 45 in. long. In the first pass through the rolls, 19 of the 20 split lengthwise throughout their length, while each half curved outward in a wide arc as it emerged from the rolls. [ ] In those days, if splitting was not a frequent occurrence, it was not unfamiliar. One can recall periods of short duration when large amounts of common brass would behave in this way. There was nothing imaginary about these spells. The affected metal would split lengthwise in the breaking rolls, and no maneuvering of mill practice made any difference. The condition would descend like a plague, demoralize the mill for several days, and disappear. It is doubtful if anyone knew the cause-however many explanations may have been current. THE PURCHASE of silver by the United States Government under the provisions of the Pittman Act is practically completed. Producers of silver in this country will now have to market their silver in competition with the rest of the world. It therefore becomes of interest to study such data as are available and endeavor to obtain such suggestions as may be afforded therefrom as to the probable future market position of the metal. Conditions influencing the marketing of silver are numerous and complex. It is a commodity entering. into the arts and manufactures, and therefore influenced by the condition of various lines of business which make use of it; it is currency-being used by all countries for subsidiary coins and even as the founda-tion of the system by a very few; and it serves as a frequent basis for speculation. The various factors involved can easily set up so many cross-currents in the flow of the metal that predictions in regard to the market position of silver can never be safely made, although it may be possible to form some idea of prob-able trends over a sufficiently long period. Of course price is determined, as is the case with all commodities, by the inexorable workings of the law of supply and demand.

INTRODUCTION THE use of iron powder during the post-war conversion period has been increasing with great rapidity. This is particularly true in regard to the manufacture of molded mechanical parts such as bushings, gears, cams, small wheels, and the like. Many manufacturers have found it possible to replace machined cast iron and carbon steel with molded iron powder parts, and thereby can not only effect a savings in cost, but can produce a better product as well. As the field of application for iron powder parts widens, greater demands are made upon the powder supplier concerning quality and uniformity characteristics. The following are some of the most important properties parts fabricators desire in the iron powder they use: I. The powder should have high compressibility so that good density can be obtained without the use of excessive pressures. At the same time, it should show low die wear so that a large number of pieces can be produced from the die. This means that the powder must be of high purity and good softness or plasticity. 2. The powder should produce compacts of high green strength, so that unsintered parts can be handled without breakage or fraying of the edges. 3. The sintering properties should be good so that satisfactory strength is obtained in the sintered piece. 4. Compacts made from the powder should show small but, above all, uniform dimensional changes during the sintering operation so that accurate parts can be produced, and warping and other such bad effects eliminated. 5. The powder should have satisfactory flow properties for automatic molding. 6. It is very important that the powder be uniform in sieve analysis, compressibility, flow, purity, and other qualities, from container to container in any given lot and from shipment to shipment. 7. Price-The fabricators desire all these good properties, but in many instances still do not wish to pay a premium price. There has been considerable discussion as to the importance of price of the powder in relation to the cost of the finished product. It is true that in cases where certain special properties only procured by powder metallurgy are required, price is not a criterion. On the other hand, there have been a number of applications recently made which would not be commercially practical with a powder which commands a premium in price. Iron powder parts are compressed in automatic presses to definite size, shape, and density. The powder is compressed to a density figure dependent upon the function the part is to perform, as well as upon such important considerations as press capacity and die wear. Such parts can be roughly broken down into the following density ranges:

There were present twelve- Directors, the Secretary and the Assistant Secretary of the Institute, and fifteen guests. A committee of three was appointed to draft a suitable resolution of memorial of the services of Joseph Esrey Johnson, Jr. The committee consists of Joseph W. Richards, Chairman, J. V. N. Dorr and Allen H. Rogers. William R. Walker was elected a Director in place of J. E. Johnson, Jr., and Edwin Ludlow was elected a member of the Executive Committee in his stead. George C. Stone was appointed Chairman of the Committee on Membership in place of Mr. Johnson. The following resolutions were then adopted: RESOLVED, That a special business meeting of the Institute be and the same hereby is appointed to be, held at the office of the Institute, No. 29 West 39th Street, Borough of Manhattan, City of New York, on the 27th day of June, 1919, it 8.30 o'clock in the P. M. to consider and take action upon the proposal to change the name of the Institute to "American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Incor-porated," and the further proposal to extend the corporate purposes of the Institute so that it shall, in addition to its other powers, be empowered to promote the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of, those employed in these industries, by all lawful means.

MCELVENNY.- Over 20 years ago I went back East on a little tour of copper companies to see how copper was handled and fabricated, and I met a Mr. Bassett who took me through the Waterbury branche of the American Brass Co. I have not seen this gentleman for 20 years, but I have a letter from him that I would like to read to you. 'The American Brass Co. Waterbury, Conn. May 19, 1930. To the-Salt Lake City Conference on Reverberatory Smelting Practice: Through the courtesy of Mr. Scott Turner, Director of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, Mr. G. L. Oldright has been temporarily released from his regular duties to act as your secretary. We have asked him and Mr. McElvenny to make the necessary preliminary arrangements and to present to you at the opening session the greetings of the officers and' directors of the Institute. I am very glad that it has been possible for you to come together under the auspices of the Institute and that the acceptance of our invitation has been so very unanimous. Such an acceptance of the invitation to this meeting indicates your interest in getting together for an exchange of technical data and ideas. We anticipate that this meeting will be of real service to the smelting industry through your open discussion and exchange of ideas, and we sincerely hope that you will form an organization which will arrange for future meetings of a similar nature. While it probably may not be desirable to. distribute the minutes of this conference except to the members who take part in it, we hope that later the Institute publications may be enriched by such matter as you think it desirable to have published; and also, that some of you may be able to offer technical papers for the Institute publications. Iron ore in the Menominee district is mined from two iron-formations of middle Precambrian age. The older formation is present in the northeastern part; is composed mainly of hematite, magnetite, quartz, and minor silicates; and contains about 34 per cent iron. The rock has been so coarsened by meta- morphism that concentration of magnetite and hematite is feasib!e, and pellets containing more than 60 per cent iron are being produced. The older formation is also present in the southeastern part where it has 1:een only slightly metamorphosed. Ore containing more than 50 per cent iron was formerly mined from local residual concentrations of iron oxides from which silica had been sufficiently leached, or replaced by iron oxide, or affected by combinations of these processes. The younger iron-formation occurs in the western part of the district and, if unaltered, is interlayered siderite and chert. The ore in this area also contains more than 50 per cent iron and formed as local residual concentrations but in two stages. The siderite was converted to iron oxides (hematite and "limonite"), and silica was contemporaneously or subsequently removed by leaching, or replacement, or combinations of these processes.

Eight members of the Board, the Secretary of the Institute, and eleven guests were present. Vice-president Henry S. Drinker presided. The President was authorized to appoint delegates to a meeting, on May 16, of the League to Enforce Peace. The Joint Conference Committee reported that the American Institute of Metals had accepted the invitation to form the Institute of Metals Division of this Institute. The Committee on Publications of the Institute of Metals was added to the Committee on Publications of the A. I. M. E. Exchange of one volume of Transactions of the A. I. M. E. at reduced price to members of the British Institute of Metals was authorized, in return for the reduced price given to our Institute of Metals Division on the annual proceedings of the British Institute.

Discussion of the paper of Robert H. Richards, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 81, September, 1913, pp. 2299 to 2303. C. D. DEMOND, Anaconda, Mont. (communication to the Secretary*) :-Any one who has observed the increased efficiency of the Wilfley tables in a mill when fed from a reasonably good hydraulic classifier, as compared with tables fed from a spitzkasten., which is a very poor classifier, will agree to the advantage of ? better classification." It must be gratifying to Dr. Richards to know that, directly or indirectly, maim mill men are responding to his persistent advocacy of correct principles of ore dressing and are accepting the results of his investigations. As he says, these principles mean much for both the conservation of resources and the profit of operators. When Dr. Richards gives us accurate figures as to the maximum size of free mineral grains in the tailings of the Wilfley table and of the vanner, they will be of a good deal of practical value in delimiting the proper fields for the Wilfley, the vanner, and the round table. He has coined the terms ? free settling" and "hindered settling."' The series may be completed by adding "crowded settling," the main principle of action on both the vanner and the Wilfley table, which is the principle of separation in a mass of grains crowded as closely together as they can be and yet continue free to move between one another; and the occurrence of larger mineral particles in the Wilfley tailing than in that from the vanner is apparently caused by the more violent agitation, due chiefly to the purposely sudden reversal of the stroke. It seems likely that the agitation caused by the wash water dropping directly upon the concentrate on the vanner is more harmful than that due to the shake. For the very finest material that can be concentrated by usual methods, the round table is superior to the vanner because it does not, have even, the gentle agitation of the latter. The action on round tables is, not crowded settling," but "film sizing," 2 but agitation is harmful in the latter action. George Gates proved this harm 20 years ago : in slaking the first successful large-scale application of canvas tables in California gold mills he abandoned all shaking motion, although he had patented canvas tables to which such motion was applied.

Since prehistoric times, gold has been sought for its beauty and its unusual physical and chemical properties. Early in the dawn of civilization it became the ultimate unit of value, and for at least 6000 years it has been used to barter for other commodities. It has been prospected for, treasured and made into works of art and personal adornment. From time to time, it has even been the object of conquest. Because of its predominant role as a basis for money in recent centuries, economists have come to think of gold solely in these terms. Gold, however, has physical and chemical properties that make it one of the most useful metals in the modern world. It is the most ductile metal known. An ounce of it can be drawn into a continuous wire over 35 miles long. It is also so malleable that an ounce of it can be beaten into films 0.00001 in. thick covering 68 sq ft of surface. It has a density of 19.3 and is so heavy that 1 cu ft of it weighs more than half a ton. Gold is nonmagnetic and has a high electric conductivity that is only slightly less than that of silver and copper. Gold is so inert to all the chemicals found in nature that gold coins and jewelry buried beneath the soil or at the bottom of the sea for thousands of years appear to be as bright and perfect as when they were first immersed. Finally, gold has an extremely high reflectivity of both light and infrared rays.

HISTORY of the Porcupine area has been pub-lished in detail by the Ontario Bureau. of Mines in several issues of its annual reports. An. interesting volume could be written on: this topic; especially if personalities were introduced, such as the. transaction whereby the original title to the Hollinger group of claims was settled between Ben Hollinger and Alex Gillies by the toss of a coin. The early history of the McIntyre mine also had its thrilling events, such as its manager, R. J. Ennis, dodging the sheriff and deposit-ing red-hot gold bricks in the bank to meet his pay-roll. The occurrence of quartz veins containing low gold values was reported in 1896 by E. M. Burwash and again in 1899 by W. A. Parks. The first application for a mining claim appears to have been applied for on Dec. 30, 1906, by W. 0. Taylor, of Toronto, one of the old employees of the Hudson Bay Co. On the recom-mendation of Mr. Taylor, early prospecting was done on the shores of Porcupine Lake. It. was not until the spectacular discovery of the surface croppings at the Dome mine, by J. S. Wilson in 1909, that a rush to the district took place. Exploration was carried on during 1910 and 1911. The big boom was on in 1911, when claims sold on the evidence of mere rock croppings, owing to the prevailing heavy overburden. Rock croppings with specks of gold brought big prices. The country was heavily timbered and most difficult to prospect. My first trip was made during the summer of 1911, while the railroad was under construction from Porquis Junction to South Porcupine. I published my observations in the Canadian Mining Journal, Dec. 15, 1911, discussing in particular the character of the ore deposits and the future prospects of the camp. The first mills were erected in 1911, only to be destroyed by the disastrous fire in July of that year. They were rebuilt and the first important shipments are recorded in 1912. The history of the camp from the discovery of the Dome to the present consists of alternate chapters of great optimism and those of a more non-committal nature. For the engineer unfamiliar with the character of the deposits of this area, and the north country in general, it is at times most difficult to draw conclusions and submit definite recommendations. When valuable orebodies apex at depth, with no surface showings other than slightly mineralized veins of quartz or quartz containing a little visible gold; when at depth valuable veins and ore deposits, paralleling the one being explored, are developed by cross-cutting, such as Nos. 85-58 on the Hollinger, which have been its largest producers, the engineer assumes responsibilities rarely called for in other mining districts. This fluctuating aspect is exemplified in the three large producers, and may be duplicated with some of the old producers now being explored.

WHEN "Chief" Buehler in mid-September set out on his official 10,000 mile swing-around-the-circle visiting Local Sections he decided not to tell his audiences how to organize and operate a state geological survey. As the director for 28 years, of the Missouri Bureau of Geology and Mines (which, he concedes, is the best in existence) lie could have done this to good advantage; but he preferred to discuss affairs of the Institute. In 25 speeches made to member and student groups, he dwelt on sonic or all of the following phases of activities. He stressed the vital importance of the Local Sections in providing the opportunity for members to associate under pleasant auspices with others in their profession. The benefits of Institute membership he classified as tangible and intangible. Of the two lie felt that the latter were more important. A man's progress in his profession depends in large measure upon a broad acquaintance and friendship with others. The Institute is incomparably the best medium for meeting fellow engineers. The primary, function of the new enlarged Membership Committee is to obtain a comprehensive list of engineers eligible to be members, always hearing in mind that the standards of membership must not be lowered in any degree. These men are to be invited by individual letter to apply for membership. Whether they become members or not is of less importance; but it is vital that no qualified man should be outside the fold for the reason that membership had never been suggested to him. Dr. Buehler emphasized repeatedly his feeling that the younger man that had never had Institute membership brought specifically to his attention had been cheated:

CHINA can he roughly divided into three metallogenetic province: North China, the Yangtze Valley, and South China. In North China the old Pre-Cambrian schists and gneisses are represented by the abundance of quartz mines in which sporadic occurrences of copper, lead, zinc, gold, and silver are sometimes found in subordinate quantities. Along the Yangtze Valley and in Central China, extending eastward as far as Shantung, are found here and there intrusions of dioritic rocks, in which occur the famous contact deposits of iron ore, besides which minor quantities of copper. lead, and zinc are also found. In South China the igneous intrunsions are of granitoid type in which, or in the vicinity of which, occur in certain regions immense deposits of antimony, tungsten, tin, and mercury. Broadly speaking. most of the famous coal mines are now situated in regions north of the Yangtze River, in which occur also the sedimentary deposits of iron in contradistinction to the contact deposits of iron along the Yangtze Valley.

The effect of four different second-phase additions on the strength of composite alloys with a common matrix was investigated. The four compositions each consisted of 85 pct by volume of silver with additions of 15 pct of either tungsten, molybdenum, tungsten carbide, or nickel. These particular additives were chosen because of their low mutual solid solubilities with silver at room temperature, the alloys consisting essentially of a dispersion strengthened silver matrix in which the second phase is distributed randomly. Test specimens were prepared by a powder metallurgy procedure consisting of ball milling the mixed powders, compacting, and sintering at 920°C for 1 hr in hydrogen. The constituent powders were of CP quality and of particle size between 2 and 10 ?. The compacts were subsequently hot pressed at 1000 psi and 1400° in an Inconel die, coined at room temperature at 60,000 psi and finally annealed and outgassed in vacuum at 800°F. The microstructures of the alloys are shown in Fig. 1, and the microscopically observed porosity grade was A-2 or better as evaluated by ASTM Recommended Practice B 276-54. The properties of the sintered compacts are listed in Table I, and the load-deformation curves in bending are shown in Fig. 2. The samples, of rectangular cross section, were loaded at the center of 58 in. span, and the reported stress was calculated on the basis of linearly elastic behavior in order to allow the comparison of specimens of slightly different dimensions. It is apparent that the tungsten, molybdenum, and tungsten carbide alloys exhibit very similar deformation curves. The moduli of elasticity were determined from the slopes of the stress-deflection curves at small loads. The measured values agree quite well with those calculated by the strength of materials approximation proposed by Paul1 for the elastic constants of mixtures, the calculated values being 15.0, 15.0, 17.4, and 13.4 million psi, respectively, for the tungsten, molybdenum, tungsten carbide, and nickel combinations with silver. The strength of the Ag-Ni composition is appreciably lower than that of the other three alloys. The discrepancy between the two groups is accounted for by the following characteristics of deformation and failure which were observed microscopically during the tests: A) The deformation of the W, Mo, and WC alloys did not involve the second phase particles to any appreciable extent. Slip and fracture took place in the silver-rich matrix alone, although the fracture path generally skirted the particles by favoring the phase boundaries. The deformation proceeded according to the following sequence: 1) formation of small, discontinuous microcracks in areas of the matrix adjacent to a particle, 2) general slip in the matrix and extension of cracks, 3) failure of specimens by propagation of cracks through matrix. The near coincidence of the 3 load-deflection curves suggests that the nature of the second phase particles does not decisively influence the plastic behavior of composite alloys of this composition as long as the particles do not undergo any considerable deformation themselves. B) A markedly different behavior was exhibited by the Ag-Ni composition where the relatively low flow strength is associated with the low yield strength of the nickel grains. Slip in the nickel grains was first observed at a stress of approximately 10,000 psi, although failure, at a later stage, took place by the propagation of cracks through the matrix. The ductility of this aggregate, in which both components deform plastically, is appreciably greater than that of the elastic-plastic composites. In summary: 1) The measured values of the moduli of elasticity of the composite alloys under discussion are in good agreement with the "strength of materials" approximation proposed by Paul.' 2) The overall plastic behavior of these particle-strengthened alloys is unaffected by the nature of the second phase particles, if the latter remain elastic. In the last several decades, techniques of data collection have been rapidly evolving. Automated spectroscopic techniques in the chemical analysis of rocks for example have advanced to the point that we can analyze samples faster than we can grind them. Remote sensors of LANDSAT give us intensity measurements in four color bands of every acre of the U.S. every 19 days. Common depth point seismic instrumentation systems used at sea for surveying and networks of seismometers arrayed around the country for earthquake studies likewise are generating vast amounts of data. These along with many other earth science data generating systems have caused a veritable data explosion. How do we deal with these enormous amounts of geologic data presently being produced as well as those produced in the past, and to be produced in the future? There is an immediate need to acquire and utilize past and present basic data in order to address today's national earth science problems. Also data being collected and stored now must be compatible with future data in order for us to be able to undertake the wide spectrum of analysis that must be made in the future. This is a big order! In order to organize and to be able to analyze these data, the USGS has embarked on a wide ranging program of compatible data base construction and the development of computer technology, based on interactive computing, to facilitate resource assessments and analyses. These activities are analogous to two sides of a coin. One side deals with the logic, philosophy, and mechanics of information storage and retrieval; and the other side deals with the sensible application of computer technology to the treatment of data. Discussion of the paper of Mr. Granger, presented at the New Haven meeting, February, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 25, January, 1909, pp. 1 to 37. LEWIS M. HAUPT, Philadelphia, Pa. (communication to the 'Secretary*) :-This subject is of great interest to me, and I am noting progress and conditions as a test of my own judgment in advocating what I believed to be the nearer, cheaper and better route at Nicaraugua. I have as yet learned nothing to change my views, or modify the convictions which led me to retire from the Commission; but that is not the issue to-day. Our government is committed to the Panama route, and is bound to " make good." There are many points presented by Mr. Granger which seem to me worthy of very serious consideration. But when all is said there remains the risk of seismic convulsions, to which either form of canal is subject; and I fail to see that the risk would be reduced by making the cut deeper, with greater surcharge of lateral pressure upon the side walls. A severe earthquake in the rainy season would doubtless close either type of canal. One of the arguments in favor of the Panama route most insisted on, was that Nature had provided good natural harbors at its termini. Recalling this, it has interested me to note that the cost of creating the necessary harbors is estimated at $27,000,000. Mr. Granger refers to this, and quotes the Board's report to the effect that, on the Atlantic side, it will require 5 miles of jetties to " make an excellent harbor out of a wretched one." The vulnerable part of Mr. Granger's paper seems to me to lie in the admission that the plant required is still in the embryonic stage, and that at least one machine should be built and tested " to demonstrate that the theoretical strains and forces work out in practice exactly as expected."
