"IN THE writer's opinion, the most important industrial re-search problems in Canada concern development of technology for the treatment and commercial utilization of the recent discoveries of v.ast quantities of easily concentrated iron ores in both eastern and western Canada. They exist in both magnetite and hematite forms. The subject is doubly important because of the lack of metallurgical coking coal in Canada. Methods for utilizing our lower grade eastern and western coals for reduction purposes must be developed. We are fortunate in our supplies of oil and gas, which can supply the heat requirements for processing or for thermal electric plants, which are now competitive with hydro-electric plants in the industrial areas. These are among the reasons which have prompted the writer to continue the development of the co-current rotary kiln direct-reduction process outlined •in his report to this Institute at the 1956 Annual Meeting ( 1) in the face of the scepticism which has surrounded the numerous costly failures in 'sponge' or 'direct' iron production. The work involved in bringing the concentrating ores of Canada to the metallic state involves, firstly, concentration of the ores; secondly, preparing the concentrates for reduction; thirdly, reduction of the 'reconstructed' ore; and finally the steel making process. These briefly will be dealt with in order, giving emphasis to the most important of these steps, the reduction process which is the main subject of this paper."

Dissatisfied with conventional wet processing methods for alluvial deposits, Resource Trend Pty Ltd of Cairns set out to develop a better process. After comprehensive investigation of existing dry techniques the principals have now developed a rotary dry concentrator that can handle the fine-grained fraction of alluvial deposits as well as the coarse. Four of these units have been mounted on an integrated towable treatment plant which has been in successful commercial operation for four years in northern Queensland. A second plant is now under construction for use in the United States. Grades of less than 0.2 g/lcm have been profitably mined at throughputs of about 80 cubic metres per hour and 85 per cent availability. The operation runs round the clock with an establishment of four. Major benefits, apart from lower capital and operating costs, are environmental. Ore is picked up, treated, and replaced in its original mixed condition within 25 m of its initial location. Rehabilitation is completed almost immediately behind the plant as it advances, leaving no slimes dams, coarse stockpiles, or haul roads. In 1993 the company won a Premier's Award for Environmental Excellence in the Queensland Mining Industry. The principal disadvantage is moisture, and the company is now actively seeking deposits in the deserts of the world. In Queensland mining is normally possible only for six months of the year.

Labrador Iron Mines (?LIM?) Schefferville Projects consist of 20 major DSO deposits lying along a 120 km strike length in both the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador and in Quebec. The town of Schefferville, Quebec lies close to the middle of this 120 km strike. LIM?s various properties comprise twenty different iron ore deposits which were part of the original Iron Ore Company of Canada (?IOC?) direct shipping Schefferville operations conducted from 1954 to 1982 and formed part of the 250 million tons of historical reserves and resources previously identified by IOC. LIM intends to develop all these resources in five separate stages. The first four stages will see the various deposits treated in three beneficiation plants, to be built adjacent to several of the deposits that comprise the Central, South Central and North Central Zones. The final stage is not yet planned but will likely involve a fourth plant. A Feasibility Study has not been completed on any of these Projects. LIM plans the development and mining of the various deposits in separate Stages. It should be noted that only the James and Redmond deposits have been permitted. All other deposits require environmental assessment and permitting. Only the James and Redmond deposits have been subject to detailed mine design. The Houston deposit has had preliminary mine design carried out. All other deposits will require detailed mine design when further geological data is collected and compiled. Detailed metallurgical testwork has been carried out on blue ore from James, Houston, Redmond and Knob deposits and to a more limited extent on yellow and red ores from these deposits. Only limited review work has been carried out on the high-silica blue ores. All of this work will be needed to be complete to confirm the final process routes. Additionally some metallurgical work will be required to be conducted on each of the other deposits to characterize their metallurgical response and to confirm expected recovery levels. Detailed mine design and metallurgical testwork has been carried out on those deposits that will form the basis of production for the initial years but further exploration, testwork and design is required for all the remaining resources. The first plant at Silver Yards and mine construction at James are now complete and initial production is expected in the spring of 2011. Metallurgical testing of the first stage deposits has established that the ore can be successfully upgraded to marketable standards. Based on the current testwork, a program of plant enhancement on the Silver Yards plant is now planned with the objective to increase both the plant throughput and recovery. Production of direct shipping lump ore and sinter fines is forecast at around 1.5 million tonnes in 2011 and, based on current and historical resources, growing to approximately 5 million tonnes in 2015 and thereafter. Production from the first four stages is expected to continue at about this rate through to about 2028.

The mining industry is the largest source of foreign income for South Africa. It is also the main source of employment in the country and, as an industry; it is also one of the largest. Due to the labour-intensive nature of the industry, labour costs in South African mines make up nearly 50 per cent of the total mine cost. It is thus imperative to have optimum labour planning and labour management systems in place.The focus of this study was to investigate current underground labour-planning models. It is shown that there are serious limitations. The range between an oversupply and undersupply of labour can be as high as ten per cent. A new system was therefore developed to ensure a constant labour demand and supply on a daily basis. One of the main objectives was to determine the existing labour supply range and thus the requirements to fill the undersupply. For this purpose, a specific methodology was designed to capture and process all the relevant information. Mine personnel was involved throughout the entire process to ensure ownership of the new model. This buy-in was achieved through planning workshops, interactive presentations and discussions. The improved frequency of daily blasts validated the new system by providing the correct amount and mix of the labour force. The new labour-planning model was then extended to optimise revenue. Implementation on a mine resulted in increased income of R95 million.

Separator performance is evaluated by the so-called separation efficiency. The concept of efficiency in mineral dressing operations must be interpreted with considerable care. Although qualitative use of term efficiency is valid and useful, difficulties arise in expressing it quantitatively because two conflicting criteria, grade and recovery are normally involved in its evaluation. It is undesirable to express efficiency as a single value, even though this is frequently done in practice, since there are strictly speaking an infinite number of combinations of grade and recovery that can give that one value. Inefficiencies in processes can be attributed to three broad sources: mineral limitations as represented by the separability curves, equipment limitations (which prevent the maximum separation indicated by the separability curves), and human failure to minimise these inefficiencies. In the present paper, the efficiency of a two-constituent separation process has been examined. The separation process has been evaluated by comparing the sharpness factor of the actual, the absolutely efficient and the absolutely inefficient operations.

(New York -Meeting, February, 1912.) TORCHES were used by the early Romans for mine-lighting, and these were followed by open lamps or earthen jars filled with tallow or oil, and later by candles. In early coal-mining, explosive gases seldom occurred, and, if they were encountered, the danger of explosion was materially diminished by the absence of any ventilating-system and the consequent insufficient circulation of air to form with the methane an explosive mixture. As the art advanced, the danger of fire-damp became more apparent, and methods for testing the air were resorted to as early as in the fifteenth century. The method of testing consisted in lowering a clog in a, basket down the shaft. As soon as he encountered fire-damp he would commence to howl, after which he was withdrawn, and a leafy bush was fastened to the end of the rope and run rapidly up and clown the shaft. This so disturbed the accumulation of gas as to cause it to rise out of the shaft. Later this odd method of testing was improved upon through the discovery that a light inserted in a body of fire-dam p would produce a blue flame. Candles were used for this purpose, and, when fire-damp was thus discovered, brushing or some other primitive method of fanning was resorted to for driving out the gas. In some instances the gas was burned away, regardless of the danger thereby incurred. A man, wearing a well-moistened coat and a mask with glass spectacles, descended in the mine a few hours before each shift. With a long stick, to which was fastened a burning torch or candle, lie would crawl on the floor with the stick so raised that the light would sweep the roof and ignite the gas which it encountered. "Today technical electro-refining processes for copper exclusively use sulfuric acid, for silver refining nitric acid electrolytes are used. Sulfuric acid is characterized by very good chemical and electrochemical stability, good conductivity and low cost. The disadvantages of sulfuric acid are the precipitation of fine-grained cathodes with smooth surfaces only by using additives like glue, thiourea and chloride. In case of silver the electrolyte is electrochemical unstable and bears the risk of the formation of toxic NOx when pH is too low. A second disadvantage is the form of electrodeposition of silver as dendrites with their removal from the bottom of the Möbius cells.This paper reports the results concerning the application of an alternative electrolyte in copper and silver electro-refining. At first the electrolyte was characterized by the determination of current density potential curves. Electrolysis experiments were performed in laboratory scale using technical anodes for copper and synthetic anodes for silver. During the copper tests the solubility of contaminations from the anodes and the amount and chemical composition of the anode slimes were determined. Moreover the influence of current density, electrolyte temperature and the effect of several additives on the precipitation and chemical purity of the cathodes were investigated. In all experiments cell voltage as well as anodic and cathodic polarization was measured and current efficiency and specific energy consumption were calculated. A comparison with the results with those of tests using conventional sulfuric acid electrolyte shows the advantages and disadvantages of both systems, additionally the technical application chances and limitations for the new electrolyte. This electrolyte enables the precipitation of smooth copper cathodes with low silver and sulfur concentrations even at lower temperatures without any additive. For silver refining the electrodeposition of compact silver sheets is possible, that can be stripped comparable to those in copper electro-refining."

"INTRODUCTION Control of target stream pH is very important in leach mining and treatment of MIW (mining influenced water). On the production side, solution acidity can impact SX (solvent extraction) effectiveness through PLS (pregnant leach solution) and raffinate pH. Many older operations and legacy mining sites generate ARD (acid rock drainage) that is too weak for profitable metal production by conventional means and faces costly wastewater treatment for mitigation and disposal. For wastewater and environmental treatment, neutralization to precipitate and remove metal contaminants to clean the wastewater is the dominant approach. Traditional lime neutralization and precipitation is most often used but results in large amounts of mixed metal sludge requiring costly disposal. Blue Planet Strategies (BPS); which focuses on improved resource utilization targeting electrolytic treatment and waste conversion into resources, has developed a new “reagentless” neutralization process. Electricity is utilized in its proprietary DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform capability to controllably raise target stream pH. The method offers a simple, low-cost approach yielding cleaner treatment chemistry. It can result in less sludge generation and enables possibilities to selectively recover contaminants as potentially saleable products for new revenue generation to offset further offset treatment costs. "IT IS KNOWN that some ores of sulphide type, such as pyrite, chalcopyrite, and bornite have an electrical conductivity comparable to that of metals, and accordingly much higher than the conductivity of any unmineralized rock. This physical property has long been used for the detection of orebodies of this kind by means of electrical measurements made at the surface of the ground.The present paper will deal with a new electromagnetic instrument for the investigation of subsurface conductors, which has been recently introduced into field practice and has already led to successful results in Canada.The principle of the instrument will be described. How it operates, and how the observations made can be interpreted will be explained. The United States is rapidly approaching an acute shortage of minerals. According to some observers, this situation may even be more severe than the energy crisis because the US consumes nearly 30% of the world's mineral production. With the mounting competition for world mineral supplies, we can no longer take for granted that foreign mineral products will be available to the US as abundantly as in the past. In 1973, US consumption of mineral raw materials was $35 billion. Of this, $7 billion consisted of imports. Without a drastic reorientation towards the mining of domestic mineral resources, the 1973 $7 billion deficit might mushroom to $100 billion by the year 2000. Thus, a return to domestic sources of raw materials will become absolutely necessary-and will be bucking the trend of the past 25 years, characterized by capital investment for growth in multinational overseas mining operations.

The aim of the metallurgical process development is, nowadays, to search for the shortest, most economical, more environmentally friendly and sustainable route to convert raw materials to finished products. Recent progress in steelmaking processes ? BOF and EAF - has also motivated to search for more advanced casting technologies to shorten process route. Continuous casting, which became industrially feasible in the 1960s, is now a mainstream technology with over 90% share of the world steel casting. After the 1980s, the increase in steel production and consumption, particularly from automobile, construction and home appliances industries, required steel manufacturers to accelerate production with more concise procedures, so that near-net-shape casting took the trend of development in order to bypass and simplify the downstream processes, e.g. cold/hot rolling mill or extrusion mill, to directly obtain finished products with required geometries. Progress in flat and long products changed the industrial operation pattern, strengthened steel production efficiency, and formed the operation concepts of the integrated steelworks and mini-mills, respectively. Thin slab casting and strip casting have represented the most important progress and promise, in the recent years, of such innovations furthermore strengthening the production efficiency and, concurrently, coinciding with the demands of environmental protection and sustainability. This paper reviews the most recent progresses in near-net-shape casting and prospects the impacts to steel industries as well as the development trends of steel production, in general.

Outokumpu Mintec started development of the pressure filter in 1991, and the first unit was delivered to Tara Mines Ltd. Ireland in 1992. The filter replaced a conventional disc filter and a thermal dryer. The replacement of the thermal dryer has improved both environmental and working conditions. The filter is currently dewatering 80,000 tons per year of lead concentrate, producing a cake with less than 6 wt % residual moisture.

A new era in pressure hydrometallurgy is marked when the roasting - leaching - electrowinning process in the zinc industry was replaced by direct pressure leaching of zinc concentrate. Since then, the technology has received recognition as the technology of the future. Large autoclaves of unprecedented size have been manufactured and installed in a number of metallurgical plants for recovering copper and nickel from their concentrates or liberating gold from its refractory ores. An attempt to recover alumina from clay using pressure technology is underway. Autoclaves lined with acid resisting bricks or with titanium clad may weigh as much as 800 tonnes were transported successfully from the manufacturing workshop to the mine site over long distances.

Between 2010 and 2018, Houston added more than 1 Million residents; the third largest rate of growth in the nation. With growth, the region faces new challenges with water supply, capacity of its wastewater system, and regional drainage. While tunnel construction has been limited in Houston since the Clean Water Program of 1990s, it is about to see a resurgence to improve water supply reliability and to reduce flood risks and sanitary sewer overflows. This paper examines the challenges with “going deep” below the built urban environment and related to high ground water; stiff, fissured clays; flowing silts and sands; faults; hazardous materials; and abandoned well fields.

"The important task of metallurgical accounting that used to be done manually is being more and more automated. Currently available solutions can generate accounting reports without human intervention or almost. However, the practical conditions for fully delivering the promised benefits of those solutions are sometimes overlooked either by end-users or by integrators. The mere fact of filling reports with values satisfying several constraints such as mass conservation constraints does not, by itself, ensure a high quality metallurgical balance. Since managers make decisions based on these reports, it is logical that the metallurgical balance performance be monitored and retrofits be made if necessary. Such retrofits may involve modifications to the measurement strategy or the reduction of the spatial resolution of the material balance model. This requires an estimability and redundancy analysis (ERA) tool to assess the feasibility of the modified model. Since determining by hand the estimability and redundancy of a set of non measured and measured variables is not trivial, even for a medium-sized mineral processing plant, a dedicated ERA tool brings valuable assistance to the metallurgist in charge. The present paper aims first at explaining how a state of the art metallurgical balance is a key enabler for the adoption of a smart process plants paradigm (SPPP) in mineral processing. Then, the fundamentals behind the building of an ERA algorithm are introduced and illustrated by two examples. Finally, the role of an ERA tool in achieving state of the art metallurgical accounting and how it contributes to delivering additional value are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Smart Process Plants Paradigm (SPPP)Mineral processors have seen an increase lately in external pressures toward operating performance improvements. Indeed, the globalization of the mining business is a key driver to becoming more productive, more responsive to market changes, to improving corporate governance and reporting standards. An original concept of JRC-diagram that can evaluate JRC and its size-effect by using a fractal model was proposed. In order to confirm the applicability of the JRC-diagram, first, JRC of the tensile fracture surfaces of a granite and a sandstone were evaluated by both the JRC-diagram and Barton's JRC-profiles, and then, it was compared with the JRC inversely calculated from the peak shear strength that is obtained from the shear test for each fracture using Barton's empirical equation. As a result, JRC evaluated by the JRC-profiles was much smaller than the inversely calculated JRC. On the other hand, it became clear that JRC evaluated by the JRC-diagram is almost the same with the inversely calculated JRC, if the size of interlocking is evaluated correctly. Therefore, for the JRC evaluation, it is thought that the JRC-diagram is more applicable than the JRC-profiles. Als ein neues Verfahren zur Bewertung des Rauheitsindexes JRC für die Bruchfläche von Felsenschichten anhand eines fraktalen Modells, wobei auch der Maßeffekt berücksichtigt wird, wird ein JRC-Diagramm vorgeschlagen. Um die Angemessenheit der Bewertung vom JRC mit diesem JRC-Diagramm festzustellen, wurden die JRC-Werte an einer Bruchfläche zwischen Granit und Sandstein sowohl mit dem JRC-Diagramm als auch mit dem herkömmlichen JRC-Profilverfahren bewertet. Anschließend wurden die durch die beiden Verfahren ermittelten Werten mit den JRC-Werten verglichen, die von den Schertestergebnissen mit Hilfe von Bartonschen Erfahrungsformel zurückgerechnet werden können. Daraus ergab sich, daß das JRC-Profilverfahren ziemlich kleinere JRC-Werte gibt als bei der Zurückrechnung, während die JRC-Werte durch das JRC-Diagramm unter entsprechender Bewertung des Ineinandergreifungsmaßes an der Bruchfläche beinahe gleich sind wie die zurückgerechneten Werte. Diese Tatsache weist darauf hin, daß das JRC-Diagramm eine bessere JRC-Bewertungsmethode als das JRC-Profilverfahren darstellt. Nous avons proposé le diagramme JRC, nouvelle méthode d'évaluer JRC qui est un indice de rugosité superficielle d'une fracture de roche à l'aide du modèle de fracturation, compte tenu de son effet d'échelle. Pour vérifier la validité de JRC évalué au moyen de ce diagramme, nous avons évalué JRC d'une fracture de roche, granite et grès, par le diagramme JRC et le profil JRC, méthode conventionnelle, et les résultats ainsi obtenus ont été comparés avec la valeur de JRC calculée en sens inverse à l'aide de la formule empirique Barton sur la base des résultats de l'essai de cisaillement des fractures. Il en résulte que la valeur de JRC obtenue par le profil JRC était assez faible en comparaison avec la valeur calculée en sens inverse alors que celle de JRC obtenue par le diagramme JRC correspondait approximativement à la valeur calculée en sens inverse à condition d'évaluer l'échelle d'endentement d'une fracture. Par conséquent, nous considérons que le diagramme JRC est une meilleure méthode d'évaluation de JRC par rapport au profil JRC.

This paper describes a two-stage reverse flotation method developed at the Mineral Resources Institute (MRII, University of Alabama, for Kerr-McGee Corporation (KMC), to separate the trona (Na2CO3 ? NaHCO3 ? 2H2O) from a saline deposit containing halite, borax, minor salts, and water insoluble materials. In the first stage, trona is depressed with Quebracho, and the insoluble gangue is floated with fatty acid. In the second stage, trona is floated with cresylic acid. The flotation concentrates contained better than 90% trona with insolubles ranging between 1 and 2%. Although the trona recoveries were low, optimization and middlings recycled in a continuous circuit could substantially increase the value.

CONSIDERABLE interest has recently been developed in sage-brush oil because of its possible utilization as a flotation agent in the mining industry. A list of some of its physical properties, together with the method used in its extraction, may prove of interest at this time. Something over a year ago, a study of the essential oils in desert plants was begun in the Chemical Laboratory of the University of Nevada. None of the oils so far studied possess properties of special interest to engineers, except the oil of sage, Artemesia tridentate, which has exceptional power as a flotation agent. This plant, known as common sage brush, also called black sage, is widely distributed over the semi-arid West, being found quite generally on most of the dry plains and mountains west of Missouri. The method of extracting the oil followed in these experiments is very simple. The leaves, twigs and small branches are placed in an airtight drum, having a capacity of about 27 cu. ft. Steam is admitted through a number of small openings at the bottom of the retort, and the pressure maintained at 20 to 25 lb. per sq. in. for 3 hr. The escape of the steam from the retort is regulated by allowing it to pass through a stop-cock into a condenser. The water in the receiver is drawn off from time to time and the oil, which is insoluble and floats upon the water, is thus collected. At the end of 2 hr. most of the oil has been driven out, though traces continue to come over for a much longer time. By raising the pressure, the time required could probably be shortened and the yield increased, but the lack of laboratory equipment has prevented the carrying out of this experiment.

OLIVER C. RALSTON, Salt Lake City, Utah.-We are indebted to these two gentlemen for the work which they have done with the oils derived from sage brush. Their work should not be confused, however, as the work of Mr. Adams deals with steam-distilled oils and that of Mr. Clevenger with destructively distilled oil, largely. In other words, Mr. Adams' oil is probably the original essential oil that existed' in the brush before distillation while Mr. Clevenger's oil not only contained this essential oil but also some products of destructive distillation of the wood constituents. I had noticed the work of Mr. Adams on attempting to separate the various constituents in the oils of some of the Western conifers and had sent to him to ask if he could send me small samples of some of. these pure products. This he very kindly did, and with them included some samples of oil from the common sage brush, whose characteristics he has here described, as well as a sample of oil from the common "rabbit brush." Only the sage brush oil proved of much value for flotation, but it, was very powerful, and I so informed Mr. Adams. Even in amounts as small or smaller than 1/10 lb. per ton of ore, it gave very quick and positive flotation of many ores, with high-grade concentrates and good extractions. It proved to be especially desirable for the flotation of carbonates of lead and of copper which had received an artificial coating of sulphide by treatment with a solution of a soluble sulphide. I also received a sample of crude pyroligneous acid from sage brush prepared by Dr. W. C. Ebaugh, of Salt Lake City. It did not do very good work in flotation, but it is possible that by concentration of this product to obtain the residual tar a good flotation oil might result. This has not been done as yet and I am sorry to see that Mr. Clevenger has not done this. It might be that the dissolved tar, added to the settled tar, would make a total yield of flotation oil higher than the 4 per cent. which Mr. Clevenger feels is a safe estimate. The importance of this point will be seen in the following discussion of the possible costs of sage brush oils for flotation.
