A new method is proposed for measuring the grindability of solids and the energy efficiency of grinding mills. The method is based on a similarity law of fracture mechanics for elastic materials in conjunction with the self- preserving character of the size distributions formed when feed particles are comminuted individually in compression. The single-particle grindability index reflects more closely the inherent resistance of a solid to size reduction than the grindability indices currently in vogue. The performance of grinding mills is evaluated in comparison with the single-particle breakage mode, which has the highest energy utilization or efficiency of all mechanical grinding routes. For a given set of stipulations, the performance index of the commonly used ball mill when grinding dolomite is found m he only 21%. compared to 44% for the high-pressure roll mill, a newly-invented energy-efficient mill. The difference is also reflected in the energy consumed per unit mass offines produced when closed-loop grinding circuits are simulated, which shows that the high-pressure roll mill circuit is invariably more energy-efficient than the ball mill circuit, provided the energy input per pass through the mill does not exceed a prescribed limit. Theoretical upper bounds on the yield of the ground product in a desired size range and lower bounds on the energy investment are calculated from the single-particle breakage mode which has, apart from the highest energy utilization efficiency, a minimum dispersion in size of the comminuted particles. Data on theoretical hounds for seven minerals/ores are presented. It is argued that it is unlikely that a grinding mill can be designed and a comminution circuit constructed whose performance exceeds these bench-mark values.

"The selection of material comprising a backfill is, of economic necessity, site dependent. Nevertheless, given the existing range of typical components-coarse waste, alluvial sand, tailings a balanced or optimal choice is no straightforward matter. A new design approach toward deciding what constitutes an optimum combination of backfill material promises to be useful. In particular a 'binder ' number, based on the mean distance between aggregate particles, specific surface and cement content, is proposed. Using this number, related empirically to compressive strength, the expected mechanical performance of any cemented fill can be predicted.IntroductionOver the years a considerable volume of information has accumulated on mine backfill material design. The principal aggregate component has been deslimed mill tailings, though more recently admixtures of rock waste, sand and tailings are quite common. For these materials uniaxial compressive strength and percolation rate properties are known to be controlled by, among other things, aggregate grading. While empirical formulae exist for relating grading to percolation rates, considerable uncertainty exists concerning strength development."

Traditionally the mineral and mining engineers have characterized particles by sieving and-settling. Within the last decade, with the advent of the scanning microscope, entirely new experimental and theoretical approachesl-10/have been taken to minutely define the particle surface. This approach depends upon a hypothesis which takes advantage of the recent developments in automatic micro-scopes which can acquire large amounts of information in a short time and the new computational techniques which rapidly reduce the information to meaningful, practical data. Historically sieving and settling are the oldest sizing techniques known. Sieving by square screens, shown on Figure l-A is a common, current practice for sizing particles both in the laboratory and in production. A woven cloth is used which usually has square openings. The size particle that will pass through the opening dependent on a complex relationship of its morphology. As can be seen in Figure l-A, neither the width nor the height of the particle is determined by sieving. From square screens one and only one parameter characterizing the particle size is obtained, that parameter is the radius of the sphere that will just pass through the given sieve opening. A variation of square mesh screen is the slot screens, shown in Figure 1-B. Here another measure more closely associated with the height of the particle is obtained. Once again, one and only one parameter is associated with the particles' shape.

"What are the basic physical parameters and main geometric parameters that are capable of representing the microscopic characteristics of rock? How can these parameters be used to accurately describe the macroscopic mechanical behavior of rock? With such questions in view, and based on the microcosmic structure analysis of rock slices, this paper presents a rock skeleton-pore structure model, holding that rock's mechanical behavior depends on the properties of rock skeleton materials and the form, size and distribution pattern of pores. According to rock stress and deformation behaviors, and in line with the skeleton-pore structure model, an essential mechanics theory for rock is advanced. The assumption that the skeleton materials are incompressible in volume and an introduction of logarithmic strain, generate the relation between porosity and apparent strain. Then, the notion that positive damage and negative damage are represented in terms of porosity is put forward; threshold value of porosity is derived by the damage threshold value of apparent volume strain; a general damage variable of rock is obtained; eventually, with the skeleton-pore model as the groundwork, a global damage constitutive equation is developed, which, with definite physical significance and material parameters to be easily determined, is convenient to apply. It has been proved that the results calculated with this new equation are well in agreement with experimental results.INTRODUCTIONRock is a form of material that contains pores, cracks and skeletons. Skeletons are composed of particles and cements. Pores or cracks within rock actually undermine the assumption of material continuum in solid mechanics. Hence, grave errors — or even false results — are inevitable if some solid mechanics theory is quoted in the discussion of rock mechanics. Many researchers in the field of rock mechanics have attempted various remedies, but the outcome is far from satisfactory — a mechanics theory for rock, in its true sense, has not been established."

A nickel-copper sulphide concentrate was treated in a pilot plant at Warren Spring Laboratory during 1961, by a hydrometallurgical roast-leach- solvent extraction process devised to cleanly separate the metal values, and produce acid sulphate liquors containing the metals. It is shown that 86 percent of the nickel and 95 percent of the copper could be leached from the calcine, after a sulphatizing roast on finely ground flotation concentrate. Iron was removed from the leach liquor by limestone neutralization with a small loss of values. Copper and nickel were separated by solvent extraction with naphthenic acid in kerosene after partial neutralization of the iron-free liquors with ammonium hydroxide. Hydrogen sulphide and chlorine were used to remove zinc (and residual copper) and cobalt impurities respectively. The recovery of pure copper and pure nickel, by electrowinning, from the acidic solvent extract strip liquors finally produced, appears technically feasible.

There are many examples, historical and recent, from the underground coal mining industry where during emergency response the response and ultimately the outcomes, could have been significantly improved if adequate systems had been in place for the collection and management of relevant information preceding the incident, the acquisition of information during the incident and the use of the information for risk mitigation and decision making purposes. The subject and process of knowledge management is possibly the most critical for would be rescuers of endangered coal mine workers, as it has been demonstrated at numerous coal mine incidents that a lack of or mismanagement of crucial information can be fatal for both the rescuer and/or the endangered coal mine worker. This paper will underline the scope and importance of robust knowledge management systems for emergency response within the underground coal mining industry and the process by which it is being achieved within the Queensland Mines Rescue Service and the NSW Mines Rescue Service.

This paper presents the results of a recent study on the development of an in-situ testing method for determining the coal strength in mine pillars. The strength testing is performed in the horizontal holes drilled into the coal rib using the penetrometer. It is a hydraulically powered device that uses an indenter to press the surface of the borehole until the load reaches the failure point of coal. The pressure and the penetration of the loading pin are recorded by the data acquisition unit. The results collected from several coal mines indicate that this testing method is ideally suited for the realistic coal strength measurements. The new testing system not only improves the accuracy of pillar strength determination, but it is more cost efficient than the conventional method.

In recent years, determining bearing capacity of piles from in-situ testing data as a complement of static and dynamic analysis has been used by geotechnical engineers. In this paper, different approaches for estimating base bearing capacity of piles from SPT data has been compared and evaluated. A new method for pile base bearing capacity in sand is proposed using SPT records. Data averaging, failure zone extension, and plunging failure of piles have been addressed in the proposed approach. A data bank comprising 10 full scale static load tests on instrumented piles and 26 dynamic tests, analyzed with signal matching technique by CAPWAP software, was used for validation. The SPT data that was performed close to pile locations is also included in the data base. Comparison of current methods by error investigation with Log-Normal approach demonstrates that the proposed method predicts pile base capacity with more accuracy and less scatter in comparison to other methods.

Weir Minerals ? Linatex has developed a new approach to the dewatering of fine solids, particularly mine and process plant tailings and wastes. The Weir process, patented in 2009, uses standard process equipment in a standard flow sheet, but applies this approach to materials previously thought to be too fine to be dewatered with this type of equipment. The process can be applied to a wide range of materials, making lower moisture products that can be re-used elsewhere or sent to disposal. It has already been tested successfully on a small scale in Australia on coal fines, zinc mine tailings, red mud, iron ore tails, and copper/gold tailings. The principal factors affecting the solids recovery have been established as: 1. The % solids in the slurry feed to the process ? a higher % solids provides a higher recovery. 2. The particle size of the feed solids ? coarser feeds provide higher recoveries. The key factors affecting the % solids in the dewatered product have been determined to be: 1. The particle size of the dewatered product - coarser materials produce a higher % solids in the dewatered product. 2. The height of the discharge weir on the dewatering screen - a higher discharge weir on the dewatering screen also yields a higher % solids. 3. The angle of the dewatering screen. Setting the screen horizontal increases the travel rate, reduces the bed depth and reduces the % solids in the dewatered product. Back-sloping the screen up to 5° reduces the travel rate and increases the % solids in product. Eight plants ranging in size from 3 t/h to 40 t/h have been sold to a range of customers in China, for coal and iron ore tailings treatment. Australia has one plant, a small unit rated at 30 t/h of sand fines, and has recently completed test work on iron ore tailings for a dewatering plant rated at 135 t/h. Additional tests are under way with clients around Australia, to demonstrate the capabilities of this process on specific applications and to provide confirmation that materials can be processed successfully, before moving on to larger scale tests or full size plants. The advantages of the Weir process include - lower moisture in products, uses proven equipment, lower capital and operating costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced power consumption, compact footprint, can be used in parallel or in series with existing equipment, modular design to facilitate redundancy or expansion, efficient water recovery and simpler water management, reduced cement in backfill mixes, smaller tailings disposal footprint, reduced earthworks requirements, much lower seepage losses, more stable tailings mass, progressive site rehabilitation, reduced impact on local wildlife, reduced risk of dam wall failure, and reduced environmental monitoring and compliance costs.

Traditionally pit optimisation and scheduling is carried out assuming that the resources, the commodity prices and production costs are all known. Once the pit contour and the mining schedule have been determined, geostatistical simulations can be used to assess the impact of the uncertainty in the resources on the pit design and the schedule, and likewise stochastic simulations can be used to test its robustness to fluctuations in costs and prices. But it would be more interesting to have a dynamic procedure for optimising the pit as the resources become better known and as economic factors such as commodity prices and costs evolve over time. This paper presents a novel approach for doing this. Rather than working with millions of small selective mining units, it was decided to work with large blocks, called macro-blocks. Mining sequences are defined as the quantities to be extracted from each macro-block in each time period. Feasible mining sequences are mining sequences that respect the accessibility constraints, and also the geometric constraints on the amounts that can be extracted from any one block over time, or from all the active blocks at a given time. Having defined feasible mining sequences, their mathematical properties were studied. It was found that natural breakpoints occur in the sequences when one set of blocks have been completely mined out, thereby opening up access to others. It was discovered that families of sequences exist, and that they are convex and closed under certain types of row permutation operations. Convexity is an advantage when optimising. The closure property opens up the possibility of mixing and matching subsequences of rows in the sequences. Another interesting property is that the sequences form branching families, rather like the binomial and trinomial trees used to model prices in finance and in real options.It is easy to generate large numbers of feasible mining sequences randomly. A two-step procedure is used to find the best one (or the best few) using three economic criteria: expected NPV,the probability of a negative NPV, and the percentage of years when the cash flow is negative. The procedure was tested on a synthetic gold mine based on the characteristics of the Essakane mine in Burkina Faso. The results were encouraging.

Groundwater Monitoring is typically required by regulatory agencies at potentially hazardous landfills or surface impoundments. Agencies have often required an arbitrary number of wells with limited evaluation of the effectiveness of the network to detect a leak. A Monitoring Efficiency Model (MEMO) has been developed to improve the design and cost effectiveness of monitoring well networks. MEMO 15 an analytical model that simulates the migration of hypothetical contaminant plumes from a site and quantifies the efficiency of alternative well network designs in detecting the plumes. The computed monitoring efficiency provides a quantitative measure of the well network adequacy based on hydrogeologic considerations. The model was recently used to design the groundwater monitoring well network for a heap leach pad at the proposed Beartrack Project.

"Crack initiation stress is one of the characteristic stress thresholds in the rock deformation process under compression. By analyzing AE responses of brittle rocks in uniaxial compression, a new method which is called cumulative AE hit (CAEH) method is proposed for determining the crack initiation stress. An advantage of the CAEH method is that the method removes the user's subjective judgment. To verify the CAEH method, uniaxial compression tests with AE measurement using 77 crystalline rock specimens were conducted. The test specimens cover eight rock classes with different mineral grain distributions. Crack initiation stresses of these specimens were determined by the proposed CAEH method and the LSR method, and the resulting mean crack initiation stresses determined using the two methods were comparable. In addition, taking one rock class with 20 specimens for example, the mean crack initiation stresses determined using the CAEH method and those from several established strain-based and AE-based methods were similar. Hence, the CAEH method can be used as an alternative method for crack initiation stress determination.INTRODUCTIONExperimental observations indicate that the failure process of brittle rocks is associated with crack initiation, crack propagation, crack damage and final strain localization (Brace et al., 1966; Bieniawski, 1967; Lockner, 1993; Wawersik & Fairhurst, 1970). Compression tests on cylindrical specimen are often used to characterize the crack development process. The crack initiation stress (sci), crack damage stress (scd), and peak stress (sc) represent important stress thresholds during the failure process of brittle rocks. Among the three characteristic stress magnitudes, sci is difficult to be determined objectively, directly from examining the stress–strain curves. Some researchers argued that sci obtained from laboratory compression tests is an important parameter for estimating the spalling failure observed in brittle rocks around underground excavations (Andersson et al., 2009; Diederichs, 2007; Martin, 1997). sci can also be used to estimate rock tensile strength and Hoek-Brown failure criterion parameter mi (Cai, 2010). Over the last 40 years, various strain-based methods have been proposed to determine the crack initiation stress in compression tests (Brace et al., 1966; Diederichs, 2007; Eberhardt et al., 1998; Lajtai, 1974; Martin & Chandler, 1994; Stacey, 1981). Nicksiar and Martin (2012) proposed a Lateral Strain Response (LSR) method for establishing sci for low-porosity rocks. Meanwhile, they also used different strain-based methods to evaluate sci of Äspö diorite, and the results showed that all strain-based methods gave acceptable crack initiation stress values. Subsequently, they utilized the LSR method to further investigate the crack initiation stresses in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks in compression tests (Nicksiar & Martin, 2013). Compared with previously proposed strain-based methods, an advantage of the LSR method is that it removes the user judgment when interpreting sci. However, the use of the LSR method relies on accurate determination of scd and on having a polynomial fitting equation to find the maximum LSR value."

Technological innovations and emerging analytical capabilities are transforming the way drill samples are analysed, with real-time mineralogical analysis made possible. In addition, new business/technical requirements are challenging long standing processes to incorporate more sources of information during planning in order to improve compliance to plan during mining and processing. Unfortunately, the new sources of information that are added do not always have adequate protocols in place to ensure quality data is collected.Spectral data covering the visible – near – short wave – midwave – longwave range are routinely collected by the Geoscience and Exploration department at BHP Billiton Iron Ore for accurate mineralogical identification. These data are used for geological interpretations (logging and modelling) and prediction of physical variables (metallurgical and geotechnical properties).This paper introduces how sampling and quality assurance / quality control concepts have been applied in the spectral data process. The surface deformations induced by reservoir dilations can be measured using tiltmeters and these measurements can be used to infer reservoir level volume changes by solving an inverse problem. Preferred approach to solve such an inverse problem is to consider more tiltmeter measurements than the number of unknown variables considered in the inverse problem. However, sufficient number of measurement points is not always available due to economical and practical issues. This paper proposes a new approach to circumvent this problem. The new approach entails generation of pseudo surface deformation data by curve fitting tiltmeter measurements using a mathematical function, which delineates three-dimensional characteristics of surface deformation profiles. Then a three-dimensional inverse problem is solved using pseudo surface deformation data. This method is useful in inferring reservoir volume changes with high areal resolution when the number of available measurements is not sufficient to acquire the desired areal resolution.

The coke analogue is a new research tool that has been developed to quantify and characterize the effect minerals in coke have on coke reactivity. The analogue material is made from a number of different carbon or carbon containing materials and minerals to in part replicate real industrial coke’s reactivity behavior. Elucidation of the effects of minerals on coke reactivity has proved difficult due to the complex and heterogeneous nature of industrial coke and the potential non-additive effects of minerals on coke reactivity. The coke analogue addresses this complexity and heterogeneity through control of its mineralogy, mineral size and mineral dispersion through the analogue, porosity and carbon structures. Initial studies using the analogue were focused on coke dissolution kinetics in liquid iron but recent work has focused in characterization of its porosity, carbon structure and rate of reaction.

The Dugald River lead-zinc-silver deposit is located approximately 60 km north-west of Cloncurry and 87 km north-east of Mount Isa. The development project is expected to turn operational in 2018. The resource is estimated to contain 61.1 Mt at 12.6 per cent zinc, 1.9 per cent lead and 34 g/t silver, with a projected mine life of 25 years. The evolution from exploration project to development project has presented multiple challenges for the technical team. Understanding and modelling the structural complexity of the deposit has been one of these challenges.Historically fault zones were logged as a lithology, with structural measurements recorded in a separate database table. When underground drill programs and development commenced in late 2012, it was recognised the deposit was more structurally complex than had been modelled. The extensive number of fault zone lithologies in core logging, made it difficult to identify fault trends and model faults in 3D software packages.In 2014, a structural project was conducted to produce a fault model for the deposit. The project highlighted that by logging the faults as a lithology, a shortage of fault characteristics was being recorded. Additionally, structural information could not be filtered to identify different fault sets due to the lack of information available to filter on. One of the major outcomes of the study was to change the methodology for the structural logging of drill core.Faults are now logged in a separate structural log. The structural log collects two types of information: interval data and point data. The interval data represents the damage zone of the fault in the surrounding rock and the point data the plane of movement for the fault. The faults are further characterised by their intensity on a scale of one to five, the type of fault structure (fault breccia, fault vein etc), the minerals present on the fault surface and structural measurements when available.The new data set allows fault data to be filtered based on fault characteristics, making implicit and explicit modelling of the faults more timely and accurate. The data set can be used to produce fault wireframes as single surfaces from the point data or hanging wall and footwall surfaces from the interval data. Creighton Mine is part of the mining history of Sudbury with more than 100 years of operation. Currently the deeper levels of the mine are reaching the 8000 ft level without implementation of mechanical refrigeration system as a result of the use of the Natural Heat Exchange Area (NHEA) over the past decades. The NHEA of Creighton Mine is part of an old block caving area divided into 4 blocks of trenches that were used to extract the ore. Currently, it is used year round to condition the outside temperature before the airflow enters the fresh air system of the mine. As the mine is progressing deeper, underground temperatures in the lower levels are starting to approach the limit of Vale?s guidelines for working in heat. This paper presents the study developed to improve the management of the NHEA to obtain cooler temperatures at the intake of the ventilation system and outlines the impact to the mine in terms of the additional level(s) that could be operated underground without the use of mechanical refrigeration. This is another of the efforts currently under development for energy conservation and to reduce the capital and operational costs of Creighton Mine while extending the expected life of the mine.

In many cases, current metallurgical accounting practice does not consider the errors associated with the measurements used in obtaining the metal balance. Considering all measurement errors, including errors associated at each step of the process - from sampling and analytical errors to measurement errors in circuit instrumentation, can improve the accuracy of the final metal balance - assisting in the improvement of process performance, optimisation and control.The consequences of the inclusion of measurement errors on metal balance for different circuit configurations and typical metallurgical accounting practice (two product and three product formulae) will be discussed in this paper.Examples of the tools, methodology of implementation, and periodical metal balance tasks are presented to illustrate the advantage of this approach in meeting the different requirements of each department.CITATION:Brochot, S and Durance, M-V, 2012. In May of 1980, a mine operated by Belmoral Mines Ltd experienced a failed crown pillar, resulting in the death of eight miners and putting sixteen others in harm?s way. The Ferderber mine was located in the Val d?Or region of the province of Quebec in Canada, and had been under development for 19 months and production for 9 months, since the opening of the portal. The crown pillar separating the 1?7 level from overlying overburden ultimately failed, permitting an estimated 1.5 million cubic feet of liquefied sediment to gain entry into the mine. This paper back-analyses the cave-in by applying decision error theory, in an examination of the organizational culture and the collective decisions contributing to the cave-in disaster. A case will be made for a greater understanding of mining methodology, geomechanics and risk assessment when operating in such challenging geologic conditions. Boundary condition and decision (BCD) analysis will be introduced as an innovative new method for the analysis of mine accidents and incidents. It will also be shown that BCD analysis can be applied to any event in an enterprise for which standards, norms or legislation exists. A cognitive profile will be presented that provides insight into the safety ethos existing within the Ferderber mine organization at the time of the tragedy.

Canadian mining research has recently been reinvigorated through a pan-Canadian research strategy driven by the industry, the research community and government departments. These organisations have come together to form the Canada Mining Innovation Council, whose role is to focus and increase mining research in the country. One of the major themes of the organisation is environment; including major research initiatives on energy, tailings and environmental stewardship. Other major initiatives on exploration, mineral extraction and mineral processing will also consider environmental benefits in the research projects they undertake. All the initiatives have their priorities determined principally by the mining and exploration companies, whose first obligation is to determine the long-term research priorities of the industry as a whole, rather than for their individual companies. Only after industry consensus on priorities does the research community become engaged in the implementation of specific projects to address those identified priorities. A goal of the program is to effectively create a virtual mining research laboratory, by engaging all the major research centres in the country. Membership to date includes most of the major mining companies operating in Canada and almost all of the mining-related universities.
