In 1903, seventeen years after mining of the Witwatersrand gold-bearing reefs started, the findings erf the Miners' Phthisis Commission (Transvaal) resulted in the initiation of measures with the object of controlling dust production. The substance of these measures was as follows: Removal of persons from places where they would be exposed to blasting fumes; use of water to suppress dust made in drilling and in other operations; supply and control of air to working-places; filtration of dusty air; and determination of the amount of the dust in the air. Broadly speaking, progress in dust control has followed these four lines with increasing success as the nature of the problem has become better known. Complete success has not, however, been achieved, partly because increasing mechanization of mining has intensified the problem and partly because the application of these measures is not infallible, being subject, in many cases, to human control. A brief summary of the development of these measures will lead to a description of present-day practice.

The paper describes a technique that has been developed by the Health and Safety Executive (USE) to make an assessment of the effectiveness of Health and Safety (H and S) management at complex sites. The paper then describes how the technique was adapted and used for the first time at a large coal mine. The results highlighted certain deficiencies in the safety management system, allowing directed advice to he given to management.

The bodies of mammals possess a very efficient mechanism for ridding themselves of inhaled dust. When the lung is healthy this mechanism works very well, and dust is quickly and completely expelled from the lung either by the respiratory tract or the lymphatics. The mechanism, however, is easily upset, and slight alterations in the condition of the ciliated epithelium or the circulation of lymph are sufficient to interfere with it, therefore the second mechanism comes into play and the dust is fixed and immobilized in some part of the lung. This, however, is not a real cleansing process, since the lung becomes a dust-trap, and may become'pneumokoniotic. The mechanism is protective at first, but later, when the accumulation of dust is considerable, it gives rise to trouble. The lung cannot become, so to speak, a physiological dust-trap, and still retain its normal structure and function; pneumokoniosis begins, which is essentially a disease due to the mechanical presence of large amounts of inert foreign material.

The main, though rarely mentioned advantage, is likely to be the standardisation of best practice and product. In a batch process conditions vary cyclically, but with a continuous process they would, at least ideally, remain the same for long periods of time. The other main advantages of continuous over batch processes are likely to be reduced operating and capital costs, the improved possibilities for automatic control, and more consistent product quality. Recent developments are surveyed for ironmaking and steelmaking with reference to blast furnaces; solid-product and molten-product direct reduction; the trough-type processes of Thring, Worner, the Japanese National Research Institute for Metals and Glinkov; basic-oxygen furnace (LD) variants; spray steelmaking; continuous casting and vacuum degassing; rolling; and coating. Encouragement in the devleopment of continuous processes may be drawn from the way unexpected difficulties, such as trouble with sulphur and refractories, were tackled and overcome to achieve the float glass process

The philosophy and detail of mill design in developing countries, where it is frequently difficult to obtain experienced, qualified supervision to operate the plant, are discussed. The resulting design suggests the desirability of simple units, with maximum visibility of equipment operation and material movement, which allow the minimal technical supervision to see the plant conditions prevailing. Information on plant conditions during periods of lesser supervision can be provided by the use of simple, low-maintenance recorders. Where the mill is intended for operation in a developing country, it is insufficient for the flowsheets and plant layouts merely to be drawn: the process metallurgist must pay meticulous attention to details that could ordinarily be left to the design detailing group. The design of this type of mill requires a knowledge of human engineering—of the type of individual who will operate and supervise the plant; probable changes in personnel should be taken into account. Details are suggested for coarse-ore handling, screens, feeders, secondary and tertiary crushers, conveyors, dust collecting, fine-ore feeding, grinding mills, conditioners, flotation, thickeners, filters, reagent systems, sand pumping, sampling, instrumentation, safety and construction

But, in January 2015, gold production reached a new monthly low, generating 87% less than it did in January 1980, and South Africa is now the world's sixth ranked gold producer. An account is given of the history and operation of the Straits Tin market and the Penang price. The procedure by which the official ruling tin price is determined is presented and the way in which bids are treated is outlined: the price declared in Penang is the result of a joint operation by the two Malaysian smelters and is arrived at by finding the highest price at which the whole of the day's offerings for sale can be sold, thus reflecting the marriage of the offerings of the individual mine producers with the demand for Straits Tin from the consuming countries of the world. A system of accurate weighing, sampling and assaying of concentrates delivered to the smelters' premises enables the various ore-buying agencies of the two smelters to notify their central offices promptly of the estimated tin content of the concentrates their customers wish to price that day, so that by 11.00 a.m. both smelters will have exchanged with each other figures giving the total quantity of metal they have for inclusion in the day's market, at the same time exchanging particulars of the bids they have received. Miners are encouraged to sell regularly for cash and an evenness is thus achieved which avoids large daily fluctuations in overall quantity.
