"Located in the northwestern portion of the Abitibi greenstone belt, Les Mines Selbaie is a copper-zinc (silver and gold) producer. Felsic tuffs host three are zones. Composed of sulphide veins and breccias, they are not exhalative massive sulphide deposits, except, probably, for the massive pyrite (fragments and lenses) localized close to the top of the volcanic sequence.The total of all (mineable and mined) ore in the three zones presently outlined on the property, is of the order of 29.9 x 106 tonnes with average grade of 0.63 g/t Au, 37.02 g/t Ag, 1.21% Cu, 1.91% Zn.The ore reserve calculations and the daily production procedures are computerized to various degrees. The data handling process is highly computerized.Various geophysical methods are, and have in the past, been successfully used on the property. The ""mise-à-la-masse"" surveys were used to perform the geological interpretation of an underground deposit (A-2 zone). Presently the PULSE-EM surveys are performed in all surface and underground exploration drill holes."

This paper seeks to examine some of the technical factors influencing the deflection of Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining walls based on the authors' field observation of numerous structures. Excessive deflections can be unsightly and can be perceived as wall failure. Deflections can cause cracking or gapping of the facing units and general misalignment. Deflection of the reinforced backfill zone behind the wall face can result in settlement of the backfill zone and adjacent pavement cracking. Deflections can be the result of excessive movement external or internal to the reinforced soil structure. This paper only examines internal factors affecting wall deflections. External factors such as foundation settlement are not discussed.

Epithermal deposits (Au or Ag dominant, ± base metals) form within ~1 km of the surface in volcanic belts, both arcs and rifts, with the different tectonic settings reflected in distinctly different characteristics. Within arcs, deposits are typically intrusion centred and commonly associated with hypogene advanced argillic alteration, both in lithocaps and as halos to shallow or proximal portions of some veins; such alteration is coupled with processes that form porphyry Cu-Au deposits at depths of ~1–3 km. Introduction of metals is related to the subsequent phyllic-stage overprint; if this fluid rises to the level of the lithocap or into epithermal veins, Au mineralisation with Cu or Ag may occur, associated with sulfate minerals or muscovite. By contrast, Au-rich (both low Ag:Au ratio and bonanza grade) colloform quartz veins form at shallow depths in volcanic rifts, typically within a few hundred metres of the surface, with clay halos and topped by silica sinter if the palaeosurface is preserved. The geologic variability in volcanic belts, including host rocks, structures and hydraulic gradients, means that many epithermal deposits vary from the end-member features of the principal styles. Effective exploration requires familiarity with end-member styles as well as potential variations, plus the mineralogical indicators of palaeotemperature (eg evidence for erosion depth, fluid flow channels). A geotechnical monitoring program has been implemented at Energy West Mining Company for enhancing site-specific evaluation of longwall stress conditions. This program consists of underground measurements at five locations in two neighboring mining districts located in the Hiawatha and Blind Canyon Coal Seams under moderate to deep cover. Within the last five years, additional measurements, including data on recorded seismic events and face conditions, have been incorporated into the data collection program together with detailed geologic mapping of longwall gateroads. In conjunction with the measurement program, the authors have completed detailed boundary-element stress analyses of the mine plans. Models have been calibrated using the data from in-mine instrumentations and then routinely used for evaluation of mine plans at depths approaching 2,600-ft. The work has improved our understanding of load transfer, seismicity and yield pillar performance. It has identified areas of potential increased stress levels at certain longwall face positions and provided guidance to measures that could be considered to mitigate the potential for these increased stress levels.

Recent studies by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health indicate that shear loading contributes significantly to failure of bolts used for rock reinforcement in coal mine roofs, Laboratory tests on 17 bolts were conducted to study the behavior of roof bolts subjected to shear loading over a range of axial bolt loads, Fourteen strain gauges were attached to each bolt to measure axial and bending loads at seven locations along its length. The instrumented bolts were grouted through two high-strength concrete blocks, and axial tension was applied to as much as 75% of yield strength. With the block interface acting as a failure plane, shear loads were applied to the blocks at a constant rate of displacement to the ultimate strength of the bolts. The tests characterized the relationship of axial bolt loads to shear forces across a rock bedding plane and measured the distribution of axial and bending strain along the length of the bolts. 'These results will improve the selection of roof reinforcement in mine areas where high shear stresses are present, thus improving the safety of miners working in these areas.

With a brownfield project comes control integration challenges. The Khumani Iron Ore Mine’s second phase expansion posed a number of challenges as there was substantial brownfields work conducted. The fi rst phase was the compilation of the modifi ed process functional specifications for the project. The second phase was an audit on all of the operational sequences; this included a comparison between the SCADA sequences, sequential starts analysed from the historian data (with the potential for improvements made by the plant operators in manual start-ups) and what was proposed in the process functional specification. Differences, inclusions and missing equipment were highlighted. The third phase was the comparison of interlocking and control in the PLC with the updated process functional specification; this was done during the coding process. Running parallel to the three phases was the SCADA integration; tie-ins to the existing SCADA were conducted on maintenance days and shutdowns, in many instances with ‘dummy’ equipment to get the operational staff accustomed to the new interface. This paper details each of the phases, the success of this methodology as well as the pitfalls experienced.

"Minera Penmont’s La Herradura is a joint venture between Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. and Newmont Mining Corporation. The mine is located in the northern Mexican state of Sonora. La Herradura consists of an open pit mine with a two-stage crushing plant and heap leaching facility. Gold is recovered from the pregnant solution using the Merrill-Crowe process; production began in July 1998. La Herradura produces about 130 000 oz gold per year and its treatment capacity is approximately 22 000 t/d. Ore mineralization occurs in a shear zone with quartz and native gold. Gold distribution is quite heterogeneous due to coarse visible gold, which in some cases ranges from 100 to 600 microns.Sampling and assaying protocols were established during exploration and prior to start-up of operations, based on nomographs developed from early heterogeneity tests. However, as the coarse gold problem became noticeable, it was necessary to develop new sampling protocols to have an acceptable relative standard deviation to control the fundamental error within ± 15%.An experimental program was developed and conducted on a selected ore block consisting of 195 blastholes; regular ore grade control procedures were applied to both sets of data to evaluate the difference in results between the protocol established prior to start-up of operations (existing) and the new protocol (leaching). In the existing protocol, sub-sampling is done through riffle splitters, and coning and quartering. Fire assaying was used to estimate the gold content on a 50 g sample. In the leaching protocol, a 12 000 g sample of bottle-rolled cyanide was leached, and the leach residue was assayed on a 50 g sample using fire assaying, and a weighted average total gold content was calculated. Currently, a new alternative method is being evaluated, where sub-sampling is done using rotary splitters, and fire assay on a 50 g sample; in this rotary sampling protocol and for comparison purposes, gold assays were also repeated using the leaching protocol.Test results were compared in three groups: < 0.3 g/t (below cut-off), 0.3 to 0.8 g/t, and >0.8 g/t. Overall, results show that the protocol established prior to start-up of operations underestimates the gold assays. Detailed technical results, alternative options, and their implications are discussed in the paper."

Grinding of iron ore is an essential step to utilise ore fines for pelletisation needed for DRI units. While preparing iron ore pellets for DRI production, the iron ore needs extensive grinding which is highly energy consuming step causing the process to become non-viable in some cases. In the present paper an attempt has been made to evaluate grinding performance of thermally treated ore compared to normal ore grinding. Such thermal pre-treatment has been found to reduce the energy requirement with lower consumption rate of grinding media. It has been observed that by applying thermal shock the ore is rendered weak with improved grindability. The stresses generated due to thermal treatment may extend existing micro-cracks in the ore and in some cases it may even nucleate fresh cracks. Experimental studies carried out on thermally treated hematitite ore reveals that the heating to 400¦C followed by water quenching can cause a reduction of 45 per cent in grinding energy. Marble deposits of dolomitic variety are available in large quantities in India and for extracting these deposits diamond wire saw cutting machine is mainly used. Cutting performance of the diamond wire saw machine depends on rock parameters, machine parameters and operational parameters. Rock parameters related to physico-mechanical properties, such as, compressive strength, tensile strength, shear strength, modulus of elasticity and abrasion resistance of marble play role in determining cutting rate and beads wear rate. Thus, this study was undertaken to determine the relationship between different physico-mechanical properties and cutting performance. This work also aimed at enhancing the cutting performance of diamond wire saw in dolomitic marble deposit. Study was conducted in the field at three different zones having deposit of soft, medium hard and hard dolomitic marble. During the study, cutting rates and wearing of diamond beads were recorded in the field. Physico-mechanical properties were determined in the laboratory. The results obtained were subsequently evaluated by using statistical analysis. Study revealed that these properties of marble play a significant role in the performance of diamond wire saw machine. Predictive equations for the wearing of diamond beads and cutting rate were developed based on regression models. Results of this study will be of ample use for operators of wire saw to achieve maximum cutting performance and for manufacturers in designing the diamond beads.

Palabora Mining Company operates a low grade underground copper mine situated in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. Full production was first reached in May 2005 after a successful transition from an open pit operation to an underground block cave operation. The operation faces a number of technical and operational challenges, not the least being fragmentation of a competent rock mass and external dilution. The cave is subdivided into three main sectors being the east, the west and the central sectors. Caving was initiated from the weaker central sector, which has the majority of its drawpoints located directly under the open pit bottom currently filled with about 130 million tons of waste material from the pit wall failure incurred in 2004. About 48% of the ore reserve has to be extracted from the western sector, which has a much courser fragmentation compared to the other two sectors and only 25% from the central sector with the finest fragmentation. The main constraint during the ramp-up stage has been secondary breaking of drawpoint blockages. Ground-breaking secondary breaking and cave management initiatives and practices have made it possible for Palabora to realize and sustain high production rates.

A campaign was undertaken during the greater part of 2001 at Noranda’s Brunswick mine concentrator to investigate the role of gas (air) superficial rate (Jg) distribution to the cells in the final Zn cleaning stage (bank of seven cells), i.e. the Jg profile. Three profiles were tested: “balanced” (each cell with same Jg), “increasing” (from cell 1 to 7 proportionally), and “decreasing,” along with an “as found” profile in a parallel control bank. The experimental design allowed for two confounding factors, changes in ore type and circulating load. The increasing profile consistently gave the best metallurgy (down-the-bank grade / recovery). The reason for improved performance was the response of the first cells in the bank where the increasing profile gave the highest selectivity of sphalerite against nonsulphide gangue (NSG). The other profiles gave lower selectivity and higher zinc recovery in the first cells, which combined to reduce overall bank performance. The higher selectivity with the Increasing profile is attributed to the low gas rate in the first cells reducing water recovery and hence limiting entrainment of NSG. The increasing profile was subsequently configured for all four stages in the zinc cleaner circuit.

This paper describes the Contractor’s value engineering design and the construction of the Interstate I-90 highway tunnel sections under the South Station railroad yard in Boston, MA for the Central Artery/Tunnel Project, using tunnel jacking and ground freezing techniques. Three tunnel box sections were constructed and installed, with typical cross-sectional dimensions of 11.6 m x 23.8 m, and respective lengths of 50.9 m, 78.7 m and 115.6 m. A 12-compartment concrete shield was built as part of the front of each multi-sectional tunnel box structure. The jacking systems employed consisted of rear and intermediate jacking stations and up to 87 individual jacks, providing a maximum total thrust capacity of 42,300 t. The tunnel alignments pass through a geologic profile consisting of historic fill, which contains remnants of old waterfront structures, building foundations and a forest of 19th century vintage timber piles, underlain by organic sediments and marine clay. Ground cover over the tunnels is in the range of 1.8–7.6 m. The groundwater table is at depths of 1.5–3 m below surface grade. The paper discusses the techniques developed and equipment used to successfully build and install these tunnel box structures with minimal impact on the commuter and long distance railroad operations directly above the tunnel alignments. Figure 1 shows the track area at the I-90 EB and WB tunnels.

ABSTRACT: The paper describes the characterisation studies of Tectonised Clay Shales at laboratory and in situ scale. The interest relates to tunnelling under squeezing and swelling conditions, in Italy, along the Apennines. The results of monitoring during full face excavation are presented in conjunction with numerical modelling. RESUME: Cet article présente la caractérisation, à l&apos;échelle du laboratoire et in situ, des Argiles Chaotiques. L&apos;attention est portée sur le creusement, dans ces milieux gonflants, des tunnels, dans les zones montagneuses des Appennini, en Italie. Enfin, on présentera les résultats de la modélisation numérique et la comparaison de ces derniers avec les mesures effectuées in situ. KURZFASSUNG: Die Arbeit beschreibt die Charakterisierungsstudien von tektonisierten Schiefertonen, sowohl im Labor als auch vor Ort. For low density materials such as coal, density-based fractionation of particles via the sink-float method is relatively simple due to the availability of liquids of suitable density; however, for high density minerals, suitable heavy liquids are less available and those that are available are expensive and pose significant hazards. At best, sink-float separation can be performed up to densities of 4400 kg/m3 with the use of Clerici’s solution at elevated temperatures. Hence the direct measurement of grade-recovery and density-partition curves is problematic. Therefore, in most cases, beneficiation plants must rely on methods such as QEMSCAN, density tracer particles or very limited information to guide them in the design and optimisation of their plants.This paper describes a density-fractionation method utilising laminar flow through a system of parallel inclined channels to generate a series of overflow fractions at different flow velocities. Here the particles are subject to precise hydrodynamic forces with minimal dispersion or mixing. The size distribution of each overflow fraction at a given flow velocity is obtained using a laser particle size analyser, and combined with a laminar flow model to deduce the corresponding density distribution. The paper describes the application of the method to measure the separation achieved using a REFLUX Classifier to obtain the corresponding feed, product and reject ‘washability curves’, and in turn the full partition surface. PROJECT DESCRIPTION Alignment The Strenger Tunnel forms part of the S16 four-lane expressway between Landeckand Bludenz. The construction of this important East-West connection started in 1973with the Arlberg Road Tunnel as its key constituent. Beginning in 1992, solutions for the section between Pians and Flirsch were investigated. Efforts to conserve nature and to avoid potential avalanche and landslide areas led to a solution detouring the villages in the Stanz valley. The starting points were predetermind by the intersections at Pians in the East and at Flirsch in the West. As a result of the expected traffic load and the comparatively high gradient of 2.9%, both one-way, two-lane tubes were constructed at once. The north tube is 5.851 m long, the south tube 5.775 m, see Figure 1. Introduction A staccato beat rings out across the Australian bush. The stamps are at work, slowly pulverizing gold-bearing ore for a patient, grizzled prospector. This is the State Battery near Marvel Loch, a tiny 22.6-t/d (25-stpd) capacity gold plant operated by the Western Australia government. It is one of many such plants located in remote corners of Western Australia and the Northern Territory. They are miniature custom mills operated for the benefit of prospectors and small mine operators. These state batteries are so called because they are operated by state governments and because the principal item of machinery in the plants are stamp batteries. They are fascinating anachronisms - throwbacks to times past, a century ago, to the hard and heady existence of gold rush days. Marvel Loch plant Typical of these operations, and perhaps a trifle more sophisticated than most, is the plant near Marvel Loch, a small center for mining and farming about 400 km (250 miles) due east of Perth. Marvel Loch. The name evokes visions of a pristine lake set in a cool, green, misty glen of the Scottish highlands. Actually, it is probably a hot, dry salt pan somewhere nearby. Just where the "loch" is difficult to discern. There is no sign of it on the map.

Keywords: sinter, characterization, agglomeration, iron ore Iron ore sinters are the main burden of blast furnaces for pig iron production. The evaluation of these agglomerates is very important due to their properties affect indirectly the productivity and costs of production of the steel industry. In the sintering plants, the standard procedure of sinter assessment has been carried out by particle size control, bulk chemical analyses, tumbler and/or shatter tests and determination of reduction degradation and reducibility indexes. Microscopy techniques have just been applied to characterize sinters produced in pilot conditions, however, these techniques, the classical ones and the less traditional, allow enhancing the industrial sintering process assessment. For investigation of the phases, microstructures and fabric, reflected-light and scanning electron microscopy(backscattered electrons images) were used; for micro analytical chemical examination, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry; for Kikuchi patterns registers, electron backscattering diffraction. In addition to the microscopy techniques, the magnetic behavior was depicted by means of magnetic susceptibility measurements. Iron ore sinters are made up by hematite, magnetite, silicoferrite of calcium and aluminium and silicates. These phases develop either during sintering or, in some proportion, represent remnants of ores and fluxes; this is the case of some hematite and Mg-bearing silicate, respectively. From the magnetic susceptibility results, three different behaviors were determined, which are directly related to the magnetiteproportion in the samples. The phase association and proportion, the sintering conditions andthe quality assessment are some features appraised by such procedures, which reveal themagnitude of this proposal in sintering plants.
