Full-column anchored resin bolts were first used in underground mines in 1972. These bolts appear to improve support in many roof bolt applications, as indicated by the use of about 30 million resin bolts in 1980. In the mid-1970's, Bureau of Mines in-vestigators began looking for a substitute for resin because of its short supply and rapidly increasing price. The investigators selected accelerated gypsum plaster (CaSO. ·1/2H20), which becomes gypsum (CaSO.· 2H20) when mixed with water. Gypsum makes an effective alternate grout material because it hardens quickly, is readily available, and is inexpensive in comparison with other cementitious materials. The Bureau received a patent (U.s. patent 4,096,944) for a system combining water capsules (wax-encapsulated water) with plaster into cartridges resembling resin cartridges. This report presents the results of tests conducted by the Bureau on the plaster, the water capsules, and their combined use in cartridges. The tests were designed to determine how the gypsum-plaster water capsule bolting system performs and what happens in the hole while the bolt is being inserted through the cartridge. The test results indicate that water capsule plaster cartridges are a workable alternative to resin cartridges under normal or dry conditions.

Extending an organization?s knowledge base throughout the entire enterprise can improve operations. Until recently, though, field operations were often left out of the information loop, as extending high-bandwidth communications into harsh environments often proved impossible due to thermal extremes, physical hazards and caustic chemicals. However, advances in the design and manufacture of rugged fiberoptic cables have now enabled the successful installation of 10-gigabit transmission links to places such as mining operations. The experience of Consol Energy exemplifies how plant managers can successfully enlist ruggedized tight buffered cables to help carry the efficiency of ERP communications into even the most challenging work environments. ?As part of our ERP implementation, we extended our corporate network underground into our mines using fi beroptic cable,? said Tom Prokop, manager-site support for Consol Energy. ?We?ve actually had rooffalls bury the cable between rocks and still did not lose data communications. Our maintenance personnel are now able to access our ERP system while underground at locations that can be up to 32 km (20 miles) away from their desks or the warehouse. Access to the corporate network allows them to order parts, look at electronic schematics, access monitoring data, no matter where they are in the mine. With a few hundred workers below ground, this immediate access translates into a time-savings that adds up in a hurry.?

The Autogenous Kelsey Axial Displacement (KAD) mill is essentially a short retention time centrifugal mill, designed to effectively harness extraordinarily high concentrations of input energy for efficient particle size reduction. The mill which has an operating duty band extending from primary to ultra-fine also has the unique capacity to generate fine and ultra-fine products from single stage size reductions of either coarse or fine mineral feeds, in both wet or dry operating modes. This paper covers developments following a recent optimisation programme which confirmed that mill shell speed and the velocity differential between the shell and the rotating internal disc assembly tips could be optimised in relation to specific energy for a given feed rate and feed size providing the product size remains constant. Subsequent test-work further demonstrated the versatility of the mill with duties ranging from the removal of surface contamination associated with heavy mineral concentrate particles to the production of premium ultra-fine talc, from a single stage of size reduction. Open circuit grinding of a rougher gravity concentrate to liberate gold ahead of leaching also highlighted the scope for the application of low cost KAD milling for a range of hydrometallurgical feed preparation duties, which involve fine and ultra-fine grinding.CITATION:Kelly, J and Kelsey, C, 2013. Blasting is the main method of production in many non-coal underground mining operations and produces multiple toxic gases as a result. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires mine operators to measure the level of toxic gases in mines as frequently as necessary to ensure they are below regulatory safety limits. The current practice uses portable gas monitors to check the concentrations of toxic gases after a fixed post-blast time. This paper studies the application of a gas monitoring system in the return entry of a limestone mine to determine a safe re-entry time. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted such a monitoring program in a limestone mine from September 2016 through May 2018. NIOSH/PMRD (Pittsburgh Mining Research Division) is endeavoring to develop workplace solutions to improve detection of and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions. This study showed that the use of gas monitoring in the return air can be a useful tool at the mine operator’s disposal to detect and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions and also to reliably estimate the re-entry time.

"A computer model has been developed which is capable of evaluating alternative production schedules (long- and short range) of an open pit mine once the ultimate pit limits have been defined. The model user can choose the best alternative according to cash flow considerations and the particular mining conditions. The model involves a combination of simulation for long range production scheduling and linear programming for short range scheduling. IntroductionMining of mineral deposits in such a fashion so that, at depletion the maximum possible profit is realized, has been a very old problem of the mineral industry. In the past, when high-grade ore reserves were readily available and profits were very high, no question of optimum profitability was raised.However, recently the complexity of both open pit and underground mining has been increased tremendously. The additional problems of continuously rising production costs on one hand and of depressed metal prices worldwide on the other, have been demanding optimum profitabiliy from every mining venture .Particularly in the area of open pit mining, the sequence of ore and waste extraction has now become very important since the size of the pits and of the mining equipment has increased enormously. The process of open pit mining involves a continuous change of the open pit surface and there are many feasible plans of extraction which lead to the same final pit shape (ultimate pit limits). Each of these feasible plans generates a production schedule over the entire mine life, which mayor may not be optimal."

This paper describes measurements of current and voltage done on submerged arc furnaces. The aim is to focus on and attempt to separate from one another the electric arc current and the current bypassing the arc through the charge. Toward this goal two measurement campaigns on AC-arcs burning on coke beds are ac-counted for. The first was done on a 150 kVA pilot furnace at SINTEF in Trondheim Norway, and the second one was done on a 48 MVA industrial furnace run by Icelandic Alloys in Iceland. The measurements were compared to simulations employing an advanced MFD arc model. The main results are that a coke bed does not necessarily behave as a linear conductor. However the warmer chemically transformed part of an operating Si-metal or FeSi furnace probably exhibits linear behaviour and passes a considerable fraction of the phase current, perhaps on some operating conditions, as much as 50%.

Attempts to analyze the stability of slopes, foundations and underground openings in discontinuously jointed rock have generally assumed full joint continuity or ignored the role of stress concentration at the tips of discontinuous joints. The most common approach in rock slopes is to consider a failure plane consisting of coplanar, but discontinuous joints separated by intact rock. The intact rock is assumed to fail in shear as a MohrCoulomb material and to contribute a strength component proportional to the fraction of the failure plane that is intact rock (Jennings, 1970). An alternative approach by Stimpson (1978) applies Lajtai's (1969) theory for shear strength of discontinuously jointed rock masses to slopes. Lajtai allows tensile failure in the intact rock of a composite surface. This theory yields lower shear strength than that of Jennings (1970) except in the presence of high normal compression, however it also fails to account for the stress concentration at the tip of a discontinuous joint. For a given slope geometry, stresses increase with slope height, but in both of these models rock mass strength is independent of size. A fracture mechanics analysis shows that particularly for small slopes, rock mass strength decreases with size.A continuous stepped failure surface produced by propagation of preexisting joints may develop at lower shear stress than pre¬dicted by the Jennings (1970) or Lajtai (1969) models. This fracture mechanics model applied to slopes in competent rock is more realistic in its assumed failure mechanism, and for large slopes more conservative than the Jennings (1970) or Lajtai models (1969).

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the performance characteristics of a 30-day around-the-clock gasification-pelletizing test conducted in October and November of 1980 with North Dakota Indianhead lignite. Gasification was conducted in a commercial-size, 6.5-it-diam, Single-stage, fixed-bed, atmospheric pressure producer with a rated capacity of about 30 million Btu/hr. Iron oxide pellets made from a commercial hematite concentrate were fired with the low-Btu gas in a 2.8-ft-diam by 35-ft-long pilot plant rotary kiln at a rate of 900 lb of pellets per hour. Gasifier operations at fuel feed rates up to 3 tons of lignite per hour and hematite pellet induration with raw 160-Btu/std ft3 lignite gas are described.

A major problem in open pit mine planning is to determine the optimum pit limit of the mine. The optimum pit limit is the one with maximum discounted net profit and satisfies technical conditions. A number of optimisation techniques have been proposed for determination of pit limits. Among these techniques, those based on graph theory are suitable to solve the three-dimensional (3D) problem. In this paper, two maximum flow methods named, Dinic's algorithm and Push-Relabel algorithm have been used to find the optimum pit limit of an iron ore mine. This method has been implemented in Gol-e-Gohar iron mine in south east of Iran in order to find the final pit limit. Issues, like properties of the mine and orebody, are studied. These properties include wall slope, sulfur and phosphor grade restrictions. The result shows that these properties have significant effect on the determined pit limit.

Both the habit plane of martensite and the orientation relationship between the matrix and martensite platelets of different habit planes have been investigated in binary titanium alloys with molybdenum, chromium, and iron. The effect of the mode of deformation on the martensite habit plane was studied. A micrograph of an exposed mar-tensite platelet is presented. IN the study of martensitic transformation in Ti-Mn alloys,' two martensite habit planes—{334), and {344)8—were reported. The {334), habit was also observed in unalloyed titanium upon transformation,' although there is disagreement with respect to the exact indices. The other habit plane, {344),, has not been reported in martensitic transformation in any other alloys. The present investigation was made to determine whether other binary titanium alloys with P-stabil-izing elements would exhibit a crystallography of transformation similar to that of Ti-Mn alloys. Furthermore, since martensite platelets can be induced by deformation under certain conditions, it was of interest to investigate whether the mode of deformation, compressive or tensile, would influence the formation of martensite platelets on a specific plane in an alloy system which possesses two martensite habit planes. Experimental Procedure The material used for the preparation of the binary alloys of iodide titanium with molybdenum, chromium, and iron had the following purities: 99.99 pct iodide titanium, 99.9 pct molybdenum, 99.423 pct chromium, and 99.9 pct iron. The compositions of alloys listed in this paper are in nominal weight percentage. All specimens used were prepared and treated according to the procedure described in reference 1, unless stated. For the subzero temperature treat,ment the following experimental schedule was followed. After specimens had undergone the grain-growth treatment, they were quenched into an ice-water bath and were then metallographically examined. In specimens of higher alloy content, no martensitic transformation was observed. In those in which mar-tensitic transformation did occur, only specimens in which the martensite platelets existed as fine needles in localized regions were used. All specimens were reannealed 17 hr at 1200°C, quenched into ice water. and the capsule was broken. They were held in the ice water for from 5 to 10 sec, then transferred to a liquid-argon bath. This stepped quenching procedure was found to be more efficient than direct quenching into liquid argon. In the latter case, as soon as the hot specimen was immersed in the liquid argon, a protective, insulating layer of argon gas formed, and the specimen continued to glow vividly in the bath for some time. In the study of the habit behavior of martensite produced by deformation, specimens were deformed at room temperature either by compression, tension, or rolling. Martensite habit planes were determined by the two-surface analysis procedure described in reference 1. A stereographic net of 153/4 in. diam was used throughout the investigation. Jets of hot gases issuing into explosive gaseous mixtures are efficient agents of ignition . The ignition temperature is defined as the temperature of the jet as it enters the cold explosive mixture which is just high enough to produce ignition . Such data have been published recently.5/ The investigators note especially that no correlation seems to exist between hot - gas ignition temperatures and spontaneous ignition temperatures , although there is a rather loose relation with limit flame temperatures . Before a more quantitative theory of the hot - gas ignition process can be attempted effectively , several questions must be answered : ( 1 ) Can the reactions leading to ignition be described by an Arrhenius type activation energy? ( 2 ) Is ignition preceded by an induction period ? ( 3 ) What is the rate - determining process of the ignition ? (4) And how does turbulence affect this type of ignition ?

Type of coal depends on the nature of the original plants and the environment in which they accumulated.Rank reflects the subsequent metamorphism of the coal, and is of two kinds-physical rank and chemical rank.INTRODUCTIONIn the different coalfields of the Commonwealth of Australia there occur many different kinds of coal which provide the coal-research worker with a wide range of material, but to the fuel technologist they represent complex problems in utilization.In the past it has been common practice to instal coal-using equipment of a design based on plant used in large industrial centres of other countries and then search for supplies of suitable coal. This has led to the transportation of coal mainly from New South Wales to other States, which have inadequate supplies of coal suitable for use in the equipment they have installed. However, modern economy and industrial practice demand local resources of coal for the development of industry, transport and domestic services, and a change in the old order is rapidly taking place. Technologists and engineers are now faced with the problem of designing and installing equipment to use whatever kind of coal is available in local coalfields.Much has been accomplished in this direction and important investigations are at present being carried out, but there still remains a wide field of problems for research.In planning and carrying out investigations into coal utilization it is essential that fundamental data and knowledge should be available and that its significance should be appreciated.

The one-pass tunneling pipe jacking method has often been the most schedule and cost efficient method for the pipe line installation. The main challenges in jacking pipes larger than 108 inches and for longer runs are: transportation and logistics, requiring high jacking forces, keeping line and grades, control of ground surface settlement, providing adequate external lubrication, and the potential of damaging the joints and pipe spigots. In recent years, 144" diameter pipes have been jacked for short runs of up to only 300 feet. In this article design and construction of installation of up to 1,000 linear feet run of 144-inch internal diameter, reinforced concrete pipes without intermediate jacking station in Chicago O?Hare International Airport are discussed. The article also presents discussions regarding the subsurface saturated silt formation, shallow cover, dewatering, jacking and receiving shafts, jacking forces, lubrication and settlement data.

This paper is a revision of Information Circular 7380, by D. Harrington and J. H. East, Jr., published in 1946, entitled ?Safe Storage, Handling, and Use of Commercial Explosives in Metal Mines, Nonmetallic Mines, and Quarries.? Issued soon after the close of World War II, this earlier circular described the unprecedented increase in the production and use of commercial explosives during the war as a result of expanded industry and the tremendous demand f or metals and minerals. In the years following World War II, the production and use of commercial explosives in the United States have continued to rise. Hence, the Bureau of Mines presents these revised figures through 1952. In rewriting this Wormation circular, most of the text prepared by Harrington and East has been retained, with newer statistical information compiled by Seth T. Reese, Accident Analysis Branch, and V. E. Wrenn, of the same branch.

In the process of pillar extraction, pillars are seldom if ever extracted completely. The pillar remnants, or snooks, play an important role in the extraction process. At the working face, they need to be stable to provide a measure of support in the immediate area. Further back, they have to fail in a controlled manner to prevent undue load build-up on the pillars that have not yet been extracted. The stability condition at the working area is the result of interaction between the stability of the pillar and that of the roof rock. It is shown that the primary mode of roof layer failure is by bending induced tension. Direct tension can be excluded in most practical conditions, and only in exceptional cases will the first failure be in shear mode. Panel spans required to cause the first goaf to be formed, predicted using analytical considerations, are of the same order as has been observed in practice. Once the first goaf has formed, the horizontal stress is reduced and failure will occur at more frequent intervals. It is shown that bending induced tension is the most likely mode of failure in an unjointed roof layer. In roof layers with a high frequency of weak or uncemented jointing, failure can be expected to occur at spans equal to the joint spacing. In this context, failure will occur at the smallest of the spans required to induce tensile roof failure and the joint spacing. A fundamental procedure to evaluate the likely roof layer failure in a stacked beam system is developed. This can to be used to estimate the loading condition on snooks. It is shown that snooks assist in stabilizing the immediate roof beam. The sizes and positions of the snooks relative to the position of the next pillar to be stooped, control the magnitude of the contribution to stability. The further the snook is from the next pillar, and the larger it is, the greater the contribution to the stability of the immediate roof. Under the condition of loading by the immediate, continuous roof beam, the position and size of a single snook controls the load acting on it. The closer it is to the nearest solid, provided that the roof overhang extends beyond the snook, the greater the load on it. However, once the immediate roof beam fails, the loading conditions change. The snook is then loaded by the tributary area load. A procedure is developed to assess the condition of snooks for different situations. Using the fundamental considerations developed in this paper, snooks can be designed to be stable during the active mining phase in their immediate vicinity, but to fail once the next line of pillars has been extracted.

The effects of water addition on the solid-state reaction between Cr2O3 and Na2CO3 at low temperatures (up to 873 K) were investigated to determine its possible influence on the reaction rate and the degree of conversion to soluble chromate. Experiments at high temperatures were conducted for comparison. It was found that adding water to the mixture before roasting enhanced both reaction rate and yield significantly. The reactions followed the Lesokhin-Tempelman equation at low temperature and the Ginstling-Brounshtein equation at above 973 K; the respective activation energies were 95 and 22 kJ/mol

A demanda por materiais ecológicos vem crescendo exponencialmente nos últimos anos. O potencial destes produtos é dado tanto pela versatilidade em seu uso quanto pela sua disponibilidade na natureza. Um dos materiais em expansão é o OSB (Oriented Strand Board), utilizado na vedação do Steel Frame. O trabalho tem como objetivo substituir em três porcentagens 15%, 30%, 45% das tiras de madeira do OSB convencional pela fibra do epicarpo do coco de babaçu (FECB), a fim de melhorar a resistência mecânica. Os resultados obtidos na chapa de 11 mm incorporada com FECB apresentaram resistência a tração entre 15 e 26 MPa e de flexão entre 42 e 75 MPa, tornando assim superiores ao produto encontrado no mercado.

The Deep Creek zinc and lead mine afforded an excellent example of a relatively small underground mine operation that approached the low mining costs of large, highly mechanized mines, An open stope mining method incorporating sublevel benches and vertical long holes was used (fig. 1). Detailed descriptions are given on the exploration program, stope development, stoping procedures, and pillar removal. Pressure grouting was used to check the inflow of water and thus prolong the life of the mine. Statistics on mining costs and on electric power consumption, haulage from mine to mill, and milling costs are included.
